Started in 2014, Smoke on the Water began as a true “block party” in the Jubilee Subdivision of Duck Mountain Provincial Park, said information from organizers. It was the brainchild of originators who had seen it as a fundraising solution for the Assiniboine Health and Wellness Centre. Over the next three years, Smoke on the Water helped generated more than $2 million which was needed to construct the new medical centre in Kamsack. In 2017, with the immediate needs of the new wellness centre satisfied, organizers had decided to turn Smoke on the Water over to Robert Ritchie so that it could continue its charitable work for the betterment of the Kamsack and Duck Mountain region. New owners of Canora Ambulance Canora Ambulance Care has new owners. Ryan and Curtis Monette officially took over the business on May 31 from previous owners Wally and Mary Huebert. The Monette brothers plan to continue operating the business from Canora and Preeceville locations, much like in the past. Between the two of them, Ryan and Curtis have 29 years of EMS experience as paramedics. “Our goal for the past number of years has been to make the transition from employees to ownership,” said Curtis. For the past seven years, they have been the owners of RCM Safety in Yorkton, which focuses on industrial health and safety. They were quite familiar with Canora and Canora Ambulance care previously, especially after Ryan was employed there for a number of years as a paramedic. Both said they thoroughly enjoy their work. “Just when you think you’ve seen it all, you see something new,” said Ryan. “There are always new challenges and we meet new people just about every day,” added Curtis.
“We deal with people of all ages. In the same day we might deliver a baby in the morning and then be called to a car accident involving older and younger people.” They presently have a staff of 12 between the Canora and Preeceville locations, and expect that number to remain the same for the foreseeable future. Canora Ambulance Care offers pre-hospital emergency care as well inter-hospital transfers, mostly to Yorkton, Regina and Saskatoon. “The previous owners had the operation in good shape, with excellent equipment and great staff. We didn’t have to make any staffing changes at all,” said Ryan. This allowed the new owners to focus more on the future. In general, EMS is constantly changing with new methods and new techniques, said Curtis. “Things are constantly evolving and we want to stay at the forefront of it, especially when it comes to educating ourselves and our staff,” said Curtis. “I recently completed the STARS Air Ambulance Critical Care and Transport Academy course in Calgary. Now I can bring

They are presently
in discussions with the Saskatchewan Health Authority, working toward the future goal of expanding pre-hospital services. They said that being brothers and business
partners has worked out well. “It’s easy to be honest with each other without hurt feelings. We’re always ready to bring up new ideas to each other,” said Curtis.
New sewage lift station for Springside By Devin Wilger Staff Writer The town of Springside needs a new sewer lift station, and they have signed the contract to get construction underway. Kelsey Pipeline received the contract through Bullee Consulting for the project, which will start construction in midAugust. The contract was signed at a special meeting of town council on July 22, where council members went in-depth with the engineers and construction contractor to get the details before signing the

It will see the town’s sewage lift station replaced, as well as the sewage force main to the lagoon. Alderman Steve Spearman said they old lift station had reached the end of its life, and was not reliable enough for the town. “Ours was built long ago and starting to fail. It just needs to be upgraded.” The project will be a total of $2,150,000, paid for
in a three-way partnership between the town and the federal and provincial governments. Spearman said that without the grants they couldn’t afford the project. While they hope to have a minimal disruption for the people of town, there will likely be closed streets and other interruptions during the construction process. The project has been in the works for at least four years, when heavy rains

“The main thing is to make sure things get done,” added Ryan. “We each have our own area of responsibilities, but sometimes we can get the job done better together rather than working alone.” The Monette brothers grew up in Yorkton, where Curtis, who is single, still lives and works. But he said he plans to spend more of his work days in Canora in the future. Ryan and his wife Melissa live near Canora with their eight-year-old daughter Aubrie. “Canora is a really nice town with friendly people, very good for raising children,” he said. In their spare time, Ryan and Curtis said they enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including barbecuing, golfing, fishing and snowmobiling in winter.w

revealed limits to the capacity in the lift station the town currently uses explained Kevin Traves, consulting engineer from Bullee Consulting. While the town did upgrade the pumps at the time, and used temporary pumps to help with capacity, they realized the current system was under-sized for the needs of the town. Traves said that the situation in Springside is a common one for towns in the province. “It’s not uncommon for much of a town’s infrastructure to date back to the original installation dates. We see a lot of 1940’s, ‘50’s and ‘60’s infrastructure with interim repairs along the way. A lot of that infrastructure is reaching the end of its service life, so we’re seeing a lot more replacement required to keep the towns flowing.” The town is glad to see the project going ahead. “It’s a good thing for the town, it’s going to ensure that the community will be around for another 50-60 years,” said Spearman. The new lift station is expected to be in use by Feb. 2020.

All are welcome to help celebrate centennial What messages did parishioners of Westminster Memorial United Church hide in a time capsule not seen in 100 years? What did they think was important to tell the world long after they’re gone? “We find out on August 4 when, as part of the Church’s centennial ser-
vice, the building’s cornerstone will be removed and opened,” said Kevin Sprong, the current minister of the church. The morning will include a regular service, with a nod to the centennial of the building, Sprong said, explaining that parishioners have extended a welcome to all well wishers.

Invitations have gone out to former ministers and former parishioners no longer living in the area, he said. It has been confirmed that Rev. Frances Patterson and Rev. Yvonne Terry will be attending. The cornerstone will be removed at the end of the service, he said. It is expected that coins as well as copies of the Kamsack Times are included in the cache. “And we will be placing items from today into the time capsule which will be sealed for another length of time.” As part of the centennial observance, a committee including Audrey Horkoff and Kim Romaniuk, has created a 24-page booklet containing photos of members of the congregation over the years. Photos include a “Baby Band” which in 1946 was an opportunity for young mothers to share social

Berkeley families. “Their beauty continues to be a subject of conversation with folks that visit our Church,” the booklet said. Information in the booklet said that the Church was officially opened on November 23, 1919. The estimated coast of $25,000 was to have been raised through donations, but because the goal was not reached, a mortgage had to be secured. “This Church has served waves of settlers through two World Wars, the dust-bowl years of the early 30s, the cyclone of 1944, the prosperous years that followed, and so much more,” it said. “It has proven to be an asset to the community as the pioneers that built it had hoped it would be. This beautiful building and its congregations have provided many services to the town and ensured an abundant supply of dedicated and skilled volunteers for the Church and town functions and activities.” Members of the Westminster Presbyterian Church of Kamsack had first met in a store on main street in Kamsack and eventually a building was
erected that served the members until 1918 when it was lost to fire. It was then that the decision was made to construct a larger, permanent facility. In 1919 the current building at the corner of Queen Elizabeth Boulevard and Hudson Bay Avenue was constructed and in 1925 the word “Memorial” was added out of respect for veterans of the First World War. The booklet includes the names of 19 ministers who served the congregation, from James Morrison in 1910, to Kevin Sprong, who has been here since May 2015. “Music has been an important aspect of our Church. We have been fortunate to have had so many talented choir directors,” it said. This includes Ida Eggenschwiler, Margaret Hunter, Mary Derwores, Pauline Zipchian and Susan Bear, the current director. The booklet includes photos of members of the United Church Women’s organization which holds an annual fall supper as well as teas and bake sales with revenues going to various outreach programs as well as supporting the general fund. At 11 a.m., following the service and the reveal of the time capsule, burgers will be barbecued and served on the street by the Kamsack air cadets, their parents and supporters, Sprong said. Because the congregation is a co-sponsor of the Johnny Cash impersonator who will be performing at the Smoke on the Water event at Madge Lake on Saturday night, arrangements have been made to have “Johnny Cash” attend Sunday’s service, Sprong said.

Recent Canora graduate awarded UBC scholarship Sabrina Moshenko, daughter of Jaime and Curtis Brock, is a 2019 graduate of Canora Composite School. Beginning in fall, she will be going to school at UBC (University of British Columbia) in Vancouver, after being the recipient of the Centennial Leaders Entrance Award, a full ride scholarship. “It’s valued at approximately $20,000 a year and is renewable up to seven years or until the completion of my degree, whichever comes sooner,” said Moshenko. “This covers my yearly tuition, mandatory student fees, housing, my meal plan, and my books. Essentially the goal is to keep me fully covered during my time at UBC.” She said the day she found out about receiving the scholarship is clearly etched in her mind. It happened on March 1, about two weeks after she was accepted into UBC. “I missed the first phone call from my lovely enrolment advisor who was trying to inform me about the scholarship, but when I called her back and she was able to give me the exciting news, I almost started crying on the phone!” recalled Moshenko. “The amount of instant relief I felt was like having a tonne of bricks taken off my chest and, to be completely honest, it still hasn’t fully hit me yet. Regardless, my parents are incredibly proud of me and it’s amazing having my dream of attending UBC become a reality now.” Through the application process, Moshenko said she learned that the point of the scholarship is to support academically qualified students who want to attend UBC, but couldn’t do so without a considerable amount of financial aid. In her situation, the scholarship relieved a great deal of financial uncertainty. “From the beginning, the entirety of my post-secondary education was left up to me to fund, whether this is through student loans, or in my case, scholarships,” she said. “While I know without a doubt that my parents want to support me, our finances limit what ways they can do this. I emphasized this point on my application.” Moshenko said grades have always been very important to her throughout high school. But she believes this was only one of the attributes which help her earn the scholarship. “I spent a good portion of my high school years working at Gateway Co-op and my spare time doing

homework and studying,” she said. “As a result, I did finish high school with relatively high grades. My dedication to my communities, whether it be the community of Canora, the LGBTQ+ community, or the Indigenous community, is something that I also mentioned in my application as I feel it reflected what I value as an individual outside of my academics.” Moshenko said UBC is currently ranked as one of the top three universities in Canada, and within the top 20 in the world. It has about 65,000 students enrolled and the campus is roughly the size of Canora. “Walking through the campus it’s clear to see that the university has lent its support to minorities and wants to highlight them,” she said. “One can see pride flags and a number of indigenous works and pieces around the campus. In fact, it was UBC’s unwavering dedication to indigenous individuals that was a key decision in me applying there.” With the scholarship, Moshenko plans to utilize her first year at UBC to determine what she wants
Starting this fall, Sabrina Moshenko, a 2019 Canora Composite School graduate, will be attending UBC (University of British Columbia) on a full ride scholarship. But for now, she’s busy at her summer job at Gateway Co-op, making sure the freezers are fully stocked with ice cream and other frozen treats for those hot summer days. to pursue in subsequent years. “I am currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts program but my first year includes some sciences and math so as to allow myself the option to transfer to the faculty of science if I ultimately decide to pursue that path,” she explained. “I can’t even put into words how excited I am to be going to UBC and having
the opportunity to study in such a beautiful city. In April, I had the amazing opportunity to visit UBC and tour the campus. The couple of days I spent there really got me excited for the fall and the cultural diversity found on campus is a refreshing change of pace. I’ve always known I wanted to go to university so I’m very eager to start this next chapter of my life. I’m fully aware that I
have many new challenges ahead, but I hope my eagerness and dedication help me persevere.” Even though UBC was her first choice, Moshenko also applied to the University of Calgary and the University of Saskatchewan, and was accepted into all three. “I applied to U of S because, financially, it was the most economical decision for me to make prior to receiving my scholarship,” she said. “Calgary was a happy middle ground that enabled me to still be close enough to Canora to keep my travel costs down, while also giving me the independence and adventure that I was seeking by going to UBC. Realistically, were it not for my award I would have been attending U of S in the fall.” The Moshenko family initially moved from Regina to Canora in October 2014 when Sabrina was 13. “To be honest, when I first moved to Canora I was quite upset about the whole situation,” she remembered. “However, I am now grateful to have spent the last five years of my life here because

it has taught me valuable lessons that I wouldn’t have been able to learn in the comfort of my city environment of Regina. I learned patience and how to listen and acknowledge those who don’t see eyeto-eye with me. I’ll be the first to admit that I am a stubborn person but moving to Canora has enabled me to allow my views to be challenged and gain the ability to empathize with those who think differently than me. On a more fun note, I am so happy to have made many genuine and wonderful friends here in Canora and I will cherish my memories with them all very dearly.” Moshenko said she’s been wanting to get out of Saskatchewan for most of her high school years, but now that it’s finally a reality, she admits to having mixed feelings. “In the past few years, I’ve been able to travel out of province on a few occasions and even go overseas to visit Italy and Spain. While all of those things were exciting and new, they helped me grow a new appreciation for Saskatchewan and the beauty we have here that Continued on Page A14

Leslie Beach hosts fastball tourney Despite weather delays, team, fans, and staff were treated to a great weekend at Ron’s Field of Dreams in Leslie Beach Resort. The event was set to be a Friday-Saturday tournament but with mother nature not cooperating the Leslie Beach staff and volunteers, and team mangers, worked hard Friday and Saturday to allow the first annual event to run Saturday evening and Sunday. There were fun but competitive games, fireworks, and great crowds all weekend. The Players would like to thanks to all the volunteers and Leslie staff for a great facility and all the work that went into getting the diamond dry and in playing condition given all the Friday rain. We would also like to thank all the Volunteers that worked
the Balloon Saloon and Remax Blue Chip Realty Yorkton for sponsoring the Saloon. With five local area teams in the event it was a fun weekend of ball with plenty of fans for each team. In the spirit of the event Buykles Store had eightof-nine players all related, and another dozen family/ fans of all ages in the crowd with Buykles jerseys on. Most of the games were within a couple runs and although it was a much more relaxed environment on the field the games were still competitive. Rosebud Junior Royals used the event in preparations for the upcoming U16 Nationals in Saskatoon. The Junior Royals pitchers also pitched for the Rosebud Royals to allow them all to get some game-
play innings in. Leslie Beach and all of the teams are already looking forward to helping run a similar event next year. Final Standings: Foam Lake Merchants Fastball Club 3-1 Buykles Store 3-1 Fishing Lake Cubs 2-2 Rosebud Royals 1-3 Rosebud Jr Royals 1-3 — Submitted

Recent Canora graduate Continued from Page A7 I ignored in my rush to leave,” she acknowledged. “However, I miss living in the city and being surrounded by the accepting mindsets that naturally come from such a diverse community. While I love Canora and the people’s commitment to tradition, as a racial minority and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, it can be stifling at times as my views don’t always align with those of my peers. Even though I am looking forward to moving on to this new chapter, the prairies will always be my home.” Moshenko plans to leave for Vancouver on August 21. She encourages students younger than herself to “enjoy being a kid,” but also to look for projects and causes outside of school that they can really believe in and support, which often impresses universities.
“I denied myself many of the joys that come from being a teenager in favour of studying and working. While I never want to encourage anyone to ignore their academics, I want kids to know that my scholarship wasn’t solely based on the numbers on my transcript,” said Moshenko. “It took into consideration what I did outside of the school and my commitment to others. The numbers on the paper can only say so much about you, but your actions can tell your whole story. “Be smart and stay on top of your homework and participate in class, but allow yourself some time to be a young teenager and make some stupid decisions. Give back to your community in ways that are important to you. Don’t do something just because you think it will look good on an application. In the end, you’re not doing that thing any justice. When speaking with my enrolment advisor she told me that many kids come to her with a list a mile long of achievements they did just because it looked good, but UBC and most other universities don’t want a robot or someone who is doing things for self-gain. Find what you value and give it 100 per cent because, in the end, that is a better indicator of who you are.”

Garden tour held in Saltcoats By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer The Saltcoats Garden Tour and High Tea was held today, (Saturday). The high tea set for 3:00 p.m. was held at the Saltcoats Town Hall, which was where the garden tour also set out from. Garden locations: Lorraine Andres, Wendy and Bob Hume, Walter and Joan Farquharson, Mildred and Harry Isaac, Shirley and Les Pearson, Margie and Greg Rushka, Joyce and Robert Morgan, Barb and Murray Straker, and Irene and Bert Friesen.
The day was sponsored by Saltcoats Beautification Committee. Beautification Committee looks after a number of gardens in the community including: Century Garden – Stone Circle on Commercial Street; Shirley Bradford Memorial Peony Garden on Commercial Street; Firefly Promontory – Relax on the Adirondack chairs overlooking the Lake or sit in the shady nearby Gazebo – Crescent Lake Road; and Immigration Hall Garden and History Plaque – North end of High Street.
In answering the old nursery rhyme question of ‘how does your garden grow?’ the answer is very well, at least in the community of Saltcoats this summer.
Historic church gets new facelift Work is under way to give the Hillburn Church a facelift. The Hillburn Church was built in 1899, and was closed due to lack of members and financial difficulties as people left the district in 1960, explains Olivia Kelly, manager of the Rocanville & District Museum. “The Hillburn Church was originally the first Methodist Church. Later, around 1907, the Hillburn Presbyterians and Methodists joined forces,” she wrote. The Hillburn Church was moved to the Rocanville Museum on Dec. 4, 1974. “This 120-year-old church has remained a staple building on the Rocanville Museum grounds for over 45 years,” said Kelly, adding for those who would like to read more on the history of the Hillburn Church and the Rocanville area, Rocanville and District History Books are available for purchase at the Rocanville Town Office and the Rocanville Museum. “The Hillburn Church was repainted a little over 25 years ago by volunteers at the museum,” she said. “The volunteers determined the original colours of the Hillburn Church to be a sunny yellow with a brown-orange trim. This summer the employees of the Rocanville Museum are working to give the Hillburn Church a muchneeded face lift. Similar colours to those
previously used are being put onto the church. The Borderland Co-op has supplied the majority of the paint for the church, as well as some paint for a few smaller projects. “Some of our fantastic volunteers have helped with building new battlements for the top of the church tower as the previous ones had almost completely rotted away,” said Kelly. “With the help of the Borderland Co-op, the front face of the Hillburn Church has already been completely painted, as well as some other patches on the back of the church and the new battlements. Thanks to dedicated volunteers, generous businesses such as Borderland Co-op, hardworking employees, and the visitors that come to the Rocanville Museum every summer. Thanks to them the local history of the Rocanville area will continue to live on at the Rocanville Museum.” The Rocanville Museum is open every Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday from 1pm to 7pm, and people can visit any time to see the painting progress on the Hillburn Church. “We have many family friendly events going on at the museum this summer that would be great opportunities to come and visit the Hillburn Church,” said Jamie MacLeod, president of the Rocanville & District Museum. On August 16th from 11am to 1pm the Rocanville Museum will be hosting Family Fun
Day, with Royal Canadian Legion Branch #020 hosting a BBQ lunch. Regional KidsFirst is going to be visiting and will have lots of fun activities for 0-5 year olds. Karen Holloway will be on site with ‘Friends of the
Enchanted Forest’ and the museum will be fun for the whole family. On September 14th you can see the Hillburn Church in its’ restored glory at our annual Museum Day. At Museum Day there is music, vend-
ors at the market, a threshing demonstration, pancake breakfast, beef supper, and various agricultural demonstrations. “We have a multitude of other events being planned for the summer at the Rocanville
Museum, be sure to keep an eye out for them and for progress on the Hillburn Church by watching for us on Facebook, Twitter @RocanvilleMuseum or Instagram @rocanvillemuseum,” said MacLeod. — Submitted
Rhein 4-H holds Achievement Day Rhein 4-H Activities club held the 17th annual Achievement Day on the afternoon of Saturday July 13, at the Rhein Lion’s Hall. The 2018-19 club this year had 13 members complete the 4-H year with welding, woodworking, craft and food projects. “Each member should be proud of what they have accomplished this year,” said Jeanette Guenther, Rhein 4-H General leader. Projects completed were two, eight-foot steel gates, lawn chairs/stools, Kindle splitters, wooden Angels, pies, cross Stitch clocks, and watering cans with lights. “We would very much like to thank the Painted Hand Community Development Corp. for their generous grant to help with the purchase of material and rent of facility,” said Guenther. Guenther added, “The judging was once again hard as everyone did such a great job of their projects and books. The program started at 3:00 pm and about 30 guests attended, staying for the lunch that followed. — Submitted It was the 17th Achievement Day for the Rhein club.
