Lakers take gold medals on home soil By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer The Saltcoats Lakers and Weyburn Beavers didn’t seem to want the gold medal final to end in the 2019 13U Tier 6 Baseball Provincial Championship Tier 6. The Beavers were leading the game 10-9 at Saltcoats Regional Park this afternoon, (Sunday), after three innings. The two sides were both three-up and threedown in the fourth. In the fifth, Weyburn plated another run to lead 11-9. But the Lakers, who came from behind in three of four games leading up to the final, scored two in the home half of the fifth to tie the game 11-11. The sixth and scheduled final inning in U13 ball was scoreless, sending the gold medal game to extra innings. The seventh was scoreless. The eighth was scoreless. The top of the ninth was scoreless. In the bottom of the ninth Nikki Devins got on and made her way to third base, where Liam Baron would drive her in for the game-winning run-battedin. Asked what he initially felt when his hit scored the run, Baron simply replied. “Wow!” “That’s about all I thought – just Wow?” Baron said on the crack of the bat he wasn’t sure the ball was going to get through the Beaver defence. “They almost had it,” he said. But it was a hit, and the Lakers were winners. “It was just yesterday I was having a tough time believing we were here,” said the 13-year-old Baron, adding winning provincials would take some time to digest. “I think it will take a little while to sink in.” Lakers coach Mike Farquharson termed the feeling of the win simply as “shock!” Farquharson said the team has come a long way over the course of the sea-

son. “Who would have believed at the start of the season what this motley crew could have pulled it off,” he said. “It’s been an amazing season -- very cool.” The win, said Farquharson is big for not just the players, but the community. “This will echo throughout the community for quite some time,” he said. Lakers in semi-finals The Lakers were hoping for a berth in finals on their home turf. But, to get to the final this afternoon they had to get past the Humboldt Dodgers Sunday morning. Playing on their home field at the Saltcoats Regional Park the Lakers were down early, but when Wyatt Evans drove in Luke Morgan in the final at-bat, the home side were on to the final thanks to a 4-3 win. “It was another comeback, our third one, (in four games),” said Lakers coach Mike Farquharson. Asked if that meant they were becoming the comeback kids, the coach said “I think we’ll have to start calling them something like that.” Farquharson said it was a case of the Lakers staying focused. “I’m pretty sure that everybody was trying to keep it (the excitement), on the inside. They did a pretty good job,” he said. The win was obviously a big one. “The kids have been outstanding. It’s been pretty cool,” said Farquharson Heading into the weekend tourney Farquharson said they had one thing in mind. “Our goal was to be playing Sunday,” he said, adding making the final was something they hadn’t been expecting, but were excited to be in. The Lakers opponents in the final would be Weyburn who has outlasted Lloydminster 19-14 in the other semi-final

game. The other semi-final It was a big offensive effort by both the Weyburn Beavers and the Lloydminster Twins as they met in the other semifinal game. The Beavers broke out to a 10-2 lead in the game being held this morning at the Saltcoats Regional Park. But the Twins battled back to tie the game 10-10, then edging ahead 11-10 in the fifth inning. Weyburn then scored nine in the top of the sixth, including a grand slam by Marek Keslering, to lead 19-11. The Twins did cut into the lead with three in the home half of the sixth and final inning but the Beavers were on to the final thanks to a 19-14 win. Lakers roll on hot Saturday It was a hot day on the thermometer but the Lakers were even hotter on the baseball diamond Saturday. The Lakers were coming off a win in game one of the event Friday, when they headed to the diamond to play Weyburn Beavers this morning. “We pulled off a victory,” said Lakers coach Mike Farquharson in an interview with Yorkton This Week Saturday evening. Wyatt Evans took the mound for the Lakers and kept the Beavers at bay. “He (Evans) gave us almost five complete innings,” said Farquharson. On offence Cole Steiner and Nikki Devins played well, said their coach, who then reiterated “the star was definitely Wyatt Evans.” In the end the Lakers had their second win, a 10-7 win, as Farquharson recalled. The afternoon game today for the Lakers had them taking on the Southey Eagles. “They were a young team, a small team, but

The Saltcoats Lakers in no particular order; Liam Baron, Wyatt Bergen, Nikki Devins, Wyatt Evans, Kyla Farquharson, Tristan Kostelnyk, Jace McCallum, Rooke Mickle, Luke Morgan, Alex Morrison, Estyn Nabozniak, Gabe NabozniakWog, Cole Stainer, Head Coach- Mike Farquharson, Asst. Coaches- Cam Morgan, Jesse Baron, Hanna Farquharson, Manager - Anna Bergen boy could they hit,” said Farquharson. Kyla Farquharson started for the Lakers, throwing 30-pitches before being relieved by Alex Morrison, with Luke Morgan finishing the game. He finished up chance to comeback,” said Farquharson, adding “we were able to do that in the last inning,” with the Lakers emerging with a 13-10 win. With three wins in three games Saltcoats finished round robin play with the best record in their pool, and in the entire tournament. The Lakers will now take to the field at 9 a.m. tomorrow, (Sunday), looking for a win to propel them to the gold medal final. They will face the Humboldt Dodgers. Locals win Friday The Championship had eight teams vying for the provincial title saw the host Lakers take on the Saskatoon Brave Knights on the Farrell Agencies Richardson Diamond Friday afternoon, with the host Lakers winning 8-3. “It was good, good,” said Lakers coach Mike Farquharson when contacted Friday evening.

what we’ve been able to do this year.” The next action for Saltcoats will be 11:45 Saturday when they face the Weyburn Beavers, winners in their first game 12-1 over Southey. The Saskatoon Brave Knights play the Southey Eagles at 11:30 Saturday. Other teams competing in Pool ‘A’ are the Lloydminster Twins, Humboldt Dodgers, Wawota Pats and Gull Lake Greyhounds.

“The kids played well, they pitched well. “It was a team effort. I’m super happy.” When it comes to team effort the Lakers have become a tight knit team, with 12 players from the local community, and the 13th from nearby Bredenbury. “Every player signed up to play the extra month for provincials,” said Farquharson. “This team is what we played with all season. They’re all still here. I’m really happy with

That is just what people visiting Good Spirit Lake Provincial Park on July 18, as SaskExpress visited the park to perform their current show; ‘Reel Music’. Local Museum Plans Exhibit Upgrade with Support from the Bayer Fund Melville Heritage Museum is a recipient of last year’s Canada’s Farmers Grow Communities program. July 8, 2019 – Melville, SK – Visitors to Melville’s Heritage Museum will notice soon notice upgrades to the facility thanks to the support of the Bayer Fund. The Melville Heritage Museum has been awarded $2,500 through the 2018 Canada’s Farmers Grow Communities (CFGC) program to upgrade the museum’s Farm Tool Room. “We serve a large surrounding area and the museum helps improve tourism in Melville,” said Donna Mucha, secretary of the museum’s board. “When I found out that the museum had won the grant, I was filled with a mix of gratitude and a bit of disbelief.” With support from the Bayer Fund, the museum will improve the exhibit in the museum’s Farm Tool Room through the installation of secure display cabinets for the artifacts. One of the oldest buildings in Melville, the Melville

Heritage Museum houses a collection of more than 10,000 artifacts in 22 exhibits, spanning three floors. These exhibits tell the story of Melville, its history, and its residents. The Canada’s Farmers Grow Communities program is aimed at strengthening rural communities by equipping local nonprofit organizations with funds to carry out much needed community work. The aim is for farmers to help improve the lives of many people living in rural communities. “Bayer recognizes the value of having thriving rural communities across Canada,” said Trish Jordan, Director of Public & Industry Affairs at Bayer CropScience. “The Melville Heritage Museum showcases the important role agriculture has played in Saskatchewan’s history and we are proud to support upgrades that will allow it to continue to educate visitors for years to come.” Donna Mucha believes that organizations should take advantage the CFGC grant to improve their communities and has

DEAR DR. ROACH: About five years ago, I came down with essential tremor. I have tried many medicines. Currently, I’m

taking propranolol and primidone, but nothing seems to help. The only thing that stops the shaking is a glass of wine. I have inquired about a laser procedure, but I found out that it’s risky. An MRI was normal. I am 82 and in excellent health. I would like to know if there is anything new to help me. — J.M. ANSWER: A lot of people have essential tremor — 5 percent of people

already been sharing the museum’s experience with others. “As a non-profit organization, we rely solely on grants, donations, and our small fundraisers,” added

Mucha. “This is one of the largest amounts we have ever received, and I think most people are surprised when they find out that a grant like this exists.” The Bayer Fund, the

philanthropic arm of Bayer, has funded the Canada’s Farmers program to provide a total of 66 grants, each valued at $2,500, to charitable and not‑for-profit groups nom-

inated by farmers. For more information, media may contact: Trish Jordan, Industry and Public Affairs Director, (204) 985-1005, trish.jordan@bayer.com

Hudson Bay resident wins more than $105,000 at Painted Hand Casino July 25, 2019 – Yorkton, SK – A Hudson Bay resident is $105,440.00 richer after a visit to the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA)’s Painted Hand Casino (PHC). Roberta Binkley and her husband stopped at PHC to watch a few innings of a Blue Jay’s game on their way home from Regina when she won the Power Strike Progressive Jackpot on July 21, 2019. When asked how she felt about the jackpot win she says, ‘It hasn’t sunken in yet. It’s not life changing money but it sure helps.’ Roberta says she plans on helping her

daughter pay for college and to buy a vehicle for herself. She and her husband have planned a vacation to Toronto to watch a Blue Jays game. After winning the jackpot the first thing they did was upgrade their tickets to Club Seats! Charles Ryder, General Manager of PHC says, ‘It’s great to see another major jackpot winner at the Painted Hand Casino.’ Painted Hand Casino is east central Saskatchewan’s number one entertainment attraction offering a variety of favourite slot and table games. Conveniently located along Broadway Street

in Yorkton, the casino is located near two major highways and attracts over 300,000 guests annually. Painted Hand Casino is open from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. Sunday to

Tuesday, from 9 a.m. to 4 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and remains open 24 hours from Friday to Sunday. Visit paintedhandcasino.ca for more information.

worldwide. It causes a noticeable tremor, usually of the hands and arms, but also may affect the head or other body parts. The severity is variable. Some people will be annoyed by symptoms, while others have real difficulty eating or writing. An expert sometimes is needed to confirm the diagnosis, as it can appear to be similar to Parkinson’s disease or other neurological conditions. However, improvement with alcohol is suggestive of essential tremor. Unfortunately, alcohol is not a good long-term treatment, as people build tolerance. Propranolol is a beta

blocker, and primidone is an anti-epilepsy drug. They are the most common pharmacologic treatments for essential tremor. You probably have tried gabapentin and topiramate, two other anti-epilepsy drugs that work for some people but may have significant side effects. My first patient to go through ultrasound treatment for essential tremor did so a few months ago. This uses many focused ultrasound beams to heat an area of the brain called the thalamus, destroying the cells responsible for the tremor. This procedure is effective for most people, but it can have side

effects, including weakness, gait disturbance and numbness. It is not clear how long the relief will last. It is an option for people whose symptoms are significantly interfering with their quality of life and who have not gotten good relief from medications. Medicare is starting to approve payment for the procedure, but it is not yet covered by most insurances. You can read more about ultrasound treatment for essential tremor at http://bit.ly/2FPFlf9. DEAR DR. ROACH: On three separate occasions, I experienced a very audible high-pitched sound in my left ear, and immediately, without other warning, fell to the floor. One time I injured myself enough to require treatment from the emergency room. These happen without warning. Do you have any insight on the sounds and the falls that follow? — R.C. ANSWER: Two concerns come immediately to mind; one is serious, the other not. The first is a simple faint, also called

“vasovagal syncope.” Occasionally a faint is preceded by a loud rushing sound, although it usually is experienced in both ears. It’s a warning sign to sit down immediately — that often can prevent the faint from happening. However, nearly everybody with a faint has some lightheadedness, so I am not 100 percent sure of this possibility. The second possibility is both rarer and more concerning. The blood vessels in the back of the skull can be compressed or made abnormal due to tumors, abnormalities in the bone and aneurisms. Some of these can be associated with sudden loss of consciousness, often with no warning. This deserves an immediate evaluation from your regular doctor or a neurologist, perhaps even an MRI scan. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu.

Later, Liam called the hospital in Las Vegas where Flo had her baby. Having overheard his father’s conversation, Douglas asked Steffy about Phoebe’s name. all the time in the summer, so why not a summer vegetable soup? A well-balanced soup is the perfect way to highlight all the sweet, crisp flavors of freshly picked summer vegetables. Soups also are easy to prepare, grow more flavorful over several days and are simple to heat and serve. I love using both fresh corn and the corn cob in my summer soups. Using both the corn kernels and the cob is a great way to quickly and deeply infuse the broth with flavor and create a spoonful of summer with each bite. Corn on the cob is an essential part of a summer meal and provides many health benefits yearround. The average serving of corn on the cob has about a quarter of your daily requirement for thiamin, which helps maintain Trucking & Transport

memory, as well as betacryptoxanthin, which aids in lung health. Corn also is high in folic acid, which is needed for women who are taking oral contraceptives. It is a good source of fiber and thiamine, and contains fair amounts of vitamin C, magnesium, niacin and potassium. One serving size or one ear of corn has about 83 calories. Here are some buying tips for selecting corn without removing the husk: • Look for small, brown holes in the husk, toward the top. Those are wormholes, and indicate that the corn may be damaged; • Feel the kernels through the husk. You want to make sure they’re plump and plentiful; if you can feel holes where kernels should be, then choose another ear. • Look for corn tassels sticking out of the top of the husk. They should be brown and sticky to the touch. If they’re dry or black, then it’s an old ear of corn. • Check the color of the husk. If it’s a bright green and tightly wrapped against the cob, then the corn is fresh. (In some cases, it will even feel slightly damp.) SUMMERTIME VEGETABLE SOUP Use your choice of summer vegetables in this soup, just maintain the suggested quantity. Be sure to add the vegetables according to their texture. Firmer veggies take longer to cook and should go in the pot first. For extra

richness and flavor, keep the corn cob after removing the kernels and add it to the soup broth while it simmers. Remove the cob and discard before serving. Add softer veggies or delicate greens like Swiss chard leaves or spinach last. You can use the Swiss chard stems for added nutrients. Just saute the chopped stems with the celery and onions. •2 tablespoons olive oil •3 carrots, diced •2 ribs of celery, diced •1 medium onion, diced •1 large clove of garlic, minced •1 teaspoon salt •1 teaspoon ground black pepper •2 tablespoons Italian or poultry seasoning, divided use •Corn cob •4 cups of fresh tomatoes, diced •2-1/2 cups chicken broth •2 cups water •1/2 teaspoon sugar, stevia or honey •1/8 teaspoon ground cloves or cinnamon •1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper •1 cup of fresh sweet corn, cut off the cob •2 cups fresh green beans, ends removed and cut into bite-size pieces •1 cup peas (shelled sugar snap peas or other summer varieties) •1 large zucchini, chopped •1 cup Swiss chard (stems removed) or spinach, chopped Heat olive oil in a large soup pot. Add carrots, cel-

ery, onion and garlic, salt, pepper, and 1 tablespoon of the Italian or poultry seasoning. Saute until vegetables begin to become tender, about 3 minutes. Add the corn cob, diced tomatoes, chicken broth, water, the remaining Italian or poultry seasoning, sugar, stevia or honey, ground cloves or cinnamon, and cayenne pepper. Stir well and simmer over low heat about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the corn, green beans, peas, zucchini and Swiss chard or spinach. Bring soup back to a simmer and continue cooking about 10 minutes, or until all the vegetables are tender — be careful not to overcook them. When soup is finished cooking, add additional salt and pepper, as needed to your taste. Remove and discard the corn cob before serving. Serve immediately. Serves 6 to 8. Cool leftovers and refrigerate in an air-tight container for 3 days, or freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. It’s market time! On weekend mornings, I like to saunter through our neighborhood farmers market amid the crowds of people in shorts and

sandals who, like me, are attracted to the “picked at their peak” vegetables, flowers, eggs, honey and jams in colorful stalls. Adults and kids alike visit with vendors, while friends happily bump into one another for a chat. Since produce is overflowing at markets and grocery stores, there’s no better time to make a fresh, easy-to-prepare dish

the whole family will love. I recently was inspired by my friend, Ann Francois, to make a big salade nicoise for the centerpiece of her dining table at a recent gathering of our friends. While I have vivid memories of traveling in southern France and feasting on this country salad typically composed of tomatoes, tuna, hard-boiled-egg halves and anchovies on a bed of lettuce and dressed with a vinaigrette, Ann’s version featured the addition of locally sourced new potatoes and mounds of green beans. Each ingredient was artfully arranged on a platter and served with crusty French bread. Make this healthy salad with your kids for a light and simple-to-prepare summer main course. What makes it so familyfriendly is that you can tweak it to suit tastes. Add artichoke hearts, capers or grilled red peppers. Don’t like anchovies? Skip them. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Technology snafus tax your patience. But before you throw that computer or other hardware into the trash, take a deep breath and call someone knowledgeable for help. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Don’t be too upset if your generosity goes unappreciated. These things happen, and rather than brood over it, move on. A new friend could open up some exciting new possibilities. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A loved one helps you get through an especially difficult emotional situation. Spend the weekend immersed in the body and soul restorative powers of music and the other arts. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You are pretty much in charge of what you want to do this week. However, it might be a good idea to keep an open mind regarding suggestions from people you know you can trust.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Another chance to shine (something always dear to the Lion’s heart) might be resented by others. But you earned it, so enjoy it. The weekend brings news about a family member. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A suggestion that never took off could become viable again. Dust it off, update it if necessary, and resubmit it. In your personal life, a new relationship takes an “interesting” turn. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Confronting a new challenge to your stated position could work to your advantage by settling all doubts once you’re able to present a solid defense backed up by equally solid facts. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You enjoy doing nice things for others. But this is a good time to do something nice for yourself as well. You might want to start by planning

a super-special getaway weekend. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Some changes you feel you need to make might be reasonable and appropriate. But others might lead to new problems. Think things through carefully before you act. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) Good instincts usually keep the sure-footed Goat on the right path. So, what others might see as stubbornness on your part, in fact reflects your good sense of what is worth supporting. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A period of introspection could lead to some surprising conclusions — and also equally surprising changes — involving a number of your long-held positions on several issues. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The financially practical Pisces might want to take a sensible approach to spending as well as investing. Being prudent now pays off later. A romantic situation moves into another phase. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of curiosity keeps you continually alert for what’s new about people, places and things.

HOLLYWOOD — Now that Disney has remade “Aladdin,” “The Lion King” and sequels of “Toy Story 4” and “Frozen 2,” it has turned to “Cruella,” a live-action sequel to “101 Dalmatians,” and a sequel to “The Little Mermaid.” Originally Lindsey Lohan was cast as Ariel, but was replaced by Halle Bailey, and “This Is Us” star Chrissy Metz was replaced by Melissa McCarthy as Ursula. The role of her father, Triton, was to be played by Jeff Bridges and Prince Eric by Zac Efron, but they are not in the current plan. While “The Star Wars” sequels have been big winners for Disney, others have not. Take “Mary Poppins” (1965), which cost only $6 million to make and earned $103 million, five Oscar wins (including Julie Andrews) and a bestpicture nomination, while “Mary Poppins Returns” cost $30 million and grossed $345 million. It didn’t win any Oscars and didn’t get a best-picture nomination. One of reasons may have been no hit songs. The original had at

least four hits: “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “Jolly Holiday” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” No hummable tunes, no repeat business. “Ghostbusters 3” is set for July 2020, and will reunite most of the original cast — Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts — and add Paul Rudd, with Jason Reitman, the son of original director Ivan Reitman, at the helm. Dan Aykroyd promises, “This flick will connect to the first movie better than any other sequel and in a way that hasn’t been done before.” The 2016 film with an allfemale cast earned $229 million against a $144 million cost. Is “Man of Steel” Henry Cavill turning in his cape for a pipe when he becomes Sherlock Holmes in “Enola Holmes”? He’ll play Sherlock to Millie Bobby Brown’s Enola Holmes (his much younger sister), which is based on a book by Nancy Springer. Is this the end of Superman as we know him? The 36-year-old Cavill has not been linked romantically to anyone since Ellen Whitaker, and he ended it in 2012.

•1 pound firm green beans, preferably French string beans (haricot verts), cooked just beyond tendercrisp stage and chilled •1 pound new potatoes, cooked and halved •2-3 (5 or 6 ounce) cans albacore solid white tuna, drained and flaked, or grilled fresh tuna, cut into

Make the vinaigrette: In a jar, let kids measure and shake vigorously to combine the oil, vinegar, lemon juice, mustard, garlic, salt and pepper. Set aside.

Robert Downey Jr. Now that Robert Downey Jr.’s “Iron Man” was killed off in “The Avengers: Endgame,” what’s next? Downey played “Iron Man,” aka Tony Stark, in 11 films in the Marvel Universe. Archival footage in “Spider-Man: Far From Home” payed tribute to him. Beyond the remake of “Doctor Dolittle,” due Jan. 17, Downey Jr. is in the sports comedy “AllStar Weekend,” which Jamie Foxx wrote, produced, directed and stars in, with Gerald Butler, Eva Longoria and Benicio Del Toro. We know Downey Jr. had superpowers, but can he and Foxx dribble competitively against NBA stars LeBron James and Steph Curry?

n evening with Don Amero is a new take on the classic travelling troubadour. With a combination of original music and classic covers like Blue Rodeo’s “Try”, it falls somewhere between

a family friendly stand up comedy show and an intimate concert. Between the witty banter, laughs, heartfelt music and inspiring stories, it is an experience for the whole family. Don believes that music is medicine and reaches a

depth of the soul that no prescription can offer. We’ve all felt the power of a melody, lyric or song - it has an almost supernatural ability to move us on an emotional level. In his performance Don takes the listener on a emotional

journey - leaving the audience encouraged and inspired to take better care of themselves and others. From the stage, he shares the joys and pitfalls of being a husband, father and musician in today’s world. With a

heavy dose of humour, he connects with an easy and effortless charm as he shares his real life stories and songs with his audience. donamero.ca
