Like any other Grade Nine, I was just scared and nervous. Everything was new. Everybody was new. I didn’t know if I’d fit in or find friends. Grade nine was a special year of our high school life. It was a year of change, a year of transition. As Grade Nines, we had much to learn. We would linger in front of classrooms, waiting for the bell to ring, and blocking other students who wanted to get through. Then came Grade Ten, when we all started to become less scared and a little more comfortable. We became more involved in school, and started joining clubs and trying out for senior teams. In Grade Eleven, Sacred Heart just felt like home to us. It was the year when we finally realized who we wanted to surround ourselves with. It was the year we started thinking about our plans after we graduate. And now, here we are, on our final year of high school. Who knew four years could pass by
Good afternoon Your Excellency Bishop Bryan, Reverend Fathers and Sisters, School Board Members, Honoured Guests, Teachers, Family, Friends, and the Graduating Class of 2019. The time has finally come for those of us in our last weeks of high school to say our goodbyes. I am both proud and humbled to be here today in the company of so many amazingly talented and inspiring individuals. In particular, I am honoured to be representing the Graduation class of Sacred Heart High School for 2019. It is a pleasure to take part in the rich traditions of a school that is over 100 years old. The Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate and the Redemptorist Fathers established this school in 1917. We are extremely blessed to be a part of 102 years of history. When I first entered Sacred Heart High School, I honestly didn’t know what to expect.
Micah Lim in just a blink of an eye? In those four years, we learned many things, and not just how to find the slope of the graph or the x’s and y’s, but also important, and essential, life lessons. As we joined a variety of different clubs, sports, and academic classes, we slowly acquired different life skills and learned different values, whether we’re aware of them or not. Drama club,

for instance, taught us the importance of confidence and self-expression. Sports teams taught us the importance of teamwork, humility, commitment, and sportsmanship. Our athletes even learned how to play through pain and to sacrifice to help their teammates. Academic classes taught us the importance of hard-work, concentration, and discipline, and that procrastination will not actually get you anywhere in life. Sometimes, we get too absorbed in what we’re doing, that we fail to see what we’re actually learning. We ask our teachers, “When are we even gonna use this in real life?” and we made the mistake of asking Mr. Chisholm, because he basically yelled at us and said, “This is real life!” And so we fail to see that we’re actually using it already. Most of the lessons we’ve learned in high school come from everything we’ve chosen to participate and join in. Chosen is the key word in there. None of those clubs, sports, or classes would have taught us anything if we didn’t choose to sign up, audition, try-out, or even just simply show up. Dami Ogunbiyi wouldn’t have known how phenomenal he is at track if he never had the willingness to try it. I guess what I’m really trying to emphasize here is the importance of trying new things, branching out, and getting out of your comfort zone, as cliche as that sounds. Funny how I talk about branching out when I’m part of the Filipino table. A few short weeks from now, we’ll all be forced to leave the comforts of our dear school. Many of us will venture off to new paths. Some of us will go to universities, some to colleges, and some will go on to work and apply for jobs. When we all go our separate ways, what will we remember from each other? What will we remember from Sacred Heart High School? Just a few days ago, Mr. Digout spoke to us in the theatre about the Drama Club and their winning play at this year’s provincial championship. He talked about the students’ hard work and the amazing performance of the actors, as well as the details of how the play actually came together. At the end of his speech, he said something that I wanted to share with you today. Mr. Digout said, “A few years from now, you won’t remember the quadratic formula or the pronoun-antecedent rule, but these students won’t ever forget how they felt when they won the provincial cham-
pionship.” You see, learning is not limited solely to the walls of a classroom. Learning happens when one tries something one has never tried before. It is with new experiences that we are enlightened and new interests and passions spark. It is with new experiences that new hopes and dreams emerge. How will we know that Math can actually, literally, make you cry in class, if we didn’t choose to take Calculus? How will we know that we can finish a thousand word essay before midnight, if we hadn’t chosen to take Biology? How will we know that Mr. Grela “hates us all equally,” if we hadn’t chosen to take Science or Physics? So I encourage you, go out there and break your boundaries. Break your walls. Join the clubs that interest you, or maybe even the ones that don’t. Be involved. It’s never too late. Reach your limits, and surpass them. Don’t be afraid to fall and make mistakes. Keep doing things that widen your perspective about the world around you and that deepen your faith in the Lord. Expand your horizons and don’t let your fears conquer you, instead, let your trust in the Lord and your courage conquer your fears. I saw a quote while I was scrolling through social media a few weeks back, and it said, “Be afraid, and then do it anyway,” and so be scared when you’re trying new things, and try them anyway. Who knows? Maybe the key to success is just going into the unknown and doing what is uncomfortable. As we talk about learning, we must also recognize and thank the ones who have provided us with the opportunity to learn, to grow, and to stand here today. Firstly, our dearest Lord, who has continually proven and will continually prove to us that He is faithful to His promises. He is the One who has orchestrated the past years of our lives for us to be able to get where we are today, and so we thank our Lord Jesus for doing so. Secondly, our dearest, most loving parents. The ones whom God has entrusted our souls with, whom God has given the chance to raise us and mold us into who we are today. Dearest parents, we thank you, for if not for you, we’d be walking around blindly, not knowing which way to go, not having any sense of direction in our lives. Thirdly, we thank our teachers, our mentors. You deserve so much credit, especially on this day, because none of us would stand here if it hadn’t been for
your extreme patience and guidance. Thank you for putting up with our seemingly endless questions, or more like my seemingly endless questions, and though you thought they were annoying, you answered them anyway. Thank you for the knowledge and wisdom you have imparted with us that we will also share with others we meet down the road. You have been our second parents, and it is an honour to have been taught by such wise people like you. Lastly, to my fellow graduates, thank you. Thank you for all the memories, good or bad, funny or not, thank you. I can honestly say that each of you has impacted me, may it be in a big or a small way. There is beauty in each of you, there is something special in each of you, and so let it flourish, let it be known, and let it be used to glorify our Lord. Let us take a moment to give a round of applause to our Dearest God, our parents, our teachers, and our fellow graduates. Sacred Heart High School has been home to us for four years, maybe more or less to some, but this school has been the place where we have spent some of our most stressful and joyful moments. Now, we must go on our own adventure in finding a new home, or making a home of what we find. We’ll be forced to test new waters, meet and talk with new people, basically start again from scratch. Just like when we were in grade nine, but not quite exactly. Because this time, we have been equipped by our parents, our family, our teachers, our friends, and our fellow graduates with life-skills and lessons that we can use. Skills and knowledge that we wouldn’t have known had we not chosen to expand our world. I would also like to share a special verse with you today. Deuteronomy 31:6 says, “Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” Fellow graduates, don’t be afraid to start again, fall again, and get back up again, for the Lord will be with you wherever you go. It has truly been an honour to represent the Graduating Class of 2019, and I am deeply thankful to you, my fellow graduates, for choosing me to represent you on perhaps the most important day of our high school life. Thank you everyone, and may God bless and guide us always.
Congratulations Grads!
May you always dare to do great things with your life.
