Western Development Museum Located on Highway 16A West, the Western Development Museum celebrates the cultural roots of Western Canadian settlers. A glimpse of life over the past century is displayed within the ‘Winning The Prairie Gamble: The Saskatchewan Story’ centennial exhibit. Featured outdoors is an extensive line up of steam traction engines, gas tractors, plows and harvesting equipment. While many displays are permanent to the Museum, they do play host to travelling exhibits, including welcoming ‘Big Bert’ from the Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM). “Big Bert is the world’s most complete Terminonaris robusta crocodile skeleton; discovered right here in Saskatchewan,” details the RSM website. “This marine predator was 5.6 m (19 feet) long; its skull alone was more than 1 m long. It lived around 92 million years ago when Saskatchewan was under a great inland sea. Palaeontologist Tim Tokaryk first discovered part of the skeleton along the banks of the Carrot River in the Pasquia Hills in 1991. A year later, the RSM and a crew from the Canadian Museum of Nature collected the rest of the fossil. “Two museum-quality models were cast from the fossilized bones of the original specimen. The first was on display in the museum lobby during the summer of 2011, when it was taken down to be reworked into this larger display that is now the RSM’s third travelling exhibit. The second model was installed at Pasquia Regional Park in 2011, near its Carrot River home. “In addition to the crocodile, visitors see fossil casts of other sea life, such as clams, birds and fish that lived during Big Bert’s time. Most impressive is the jumbled bones of the Xiphactinus (zih-FAK-tin-us), a vicious fish that would have been about 3 m long, his bones still in the tangle they were found. Further in the exhibit visitors can virtually dive amongst the sea creatures and will be able to e-mail pictures from the exhibit to friends and family. “Big Bert is brought back to life through 3D imaging that allows visitors to spin the bones around in any direction and to also flesh out the animal for some in depth and interactive study of the cast. This exhibit promises to be a real show stopper, keeping the RSM’s standard of superior quality in exhibit display.” The RSM has three travelling exhibits, all of which will now have made stops at the Yorkton WDM. They include: Scotty’s Skull (Oct – Dec 2008); Omachiw: Hunter of the Prairie Sea (Dec 2013 – May 2014); Big Bert (Dec 2015 – April 2016). Big Bert will be on display at the Yorkton WDM from midDecember 2015 through until April 2016.

Harvest Showdown The Grain Miller’s Harvest Showdown is back again this November, and with it new events and features await patrons. Over the years the event has become a showcase for the region, and has become a meeting place for agriculture, and YEA Manager Shaun Morin said that has been a key to the success of Harvest Showdown which runs Nov. 4 - 7 at the Gallagher Centre and Yorkton Exhibition grounds. “When the Exhibition Association first came up with the idea of hosting a fall show, they wanted it to focus and agriculture, and that has remained the primary focus for the event each year,” said Morin. With that in mind, the former Canola Expo has expanded to become the Saskatchewan Grains Expo. “The idea of that is to not limit the scope,” said Morin. While the morning session will feature the Canola sector, the afternoon will be open to various grain production issues including a panel discussion. From the beginning two events have been highly successful aspects of the show, the commercial cattle show and sale, and the commercial grain show, and both remain integral to Harvest Showdown. Morin said the cattle shows held Thursday and Friday and the sale held Friday, reflect the fact there are a lot of very good cattle producers in the area, and they have been supportive of Harvest Showdown bringing their cattle yearafter-year. “The cattle show and sale is as much about old friends getting together and talking the business of cattle as it is about winning a banner,” said Morin. “It’s that atmosphere of meeting friends every fall that has helped the cattle show be so well-attended.” The commercial grain show, which includes an awards evening Thursday is the only Grain Show remaining in western Canada. “We’ve always had a lot of support from farmers entering grain samples,” said Morin. There will also be school tours sponsored by Mosaic. It is an opportunity for Yorkton and area students to get some hands-on education about the industry of agriculture. “We expect about a thousand students to attend,” said Morin, adding the YEA has always thought education was an important aspect of its activities. This year’s show will feature “Breed Alley” back after several years. The display will showcase the various breeds of cattle in our region by purebred producers. Mix in annual events such as the ranch rodeo and stock dog competitions, trade show, fiddling and auctioneer competitions, exotic animal sale, dual sanctioned Canadian
Cowboy Association/Manitoba Rodeo Cowboy Association which runs Friday and Saturday evenings, and the popular wind-up rodeo dance, and there really is something for everyone. “The focus might be agriculture, but Harvest Showdown really has become a place where country meets city, and vice versa,” said Morin. “We just want to invite everyone to go a little country this year and help us celebrate successes in agriculture.” Daily gate admission is only $5 for adults. Morin said the gate admission will grant access to everything involved with Harvest Showdown except the rodeo performance, rodeo dance and the Seniors Supper & Dance, all of which will require an additional ticket purchase. Howling good time Halloween is a time for ghosts, gremlins, smiling pumpkins and of course trick and treating. In the spirit of the day the Yorkton Co-op launched a ‘Pumpkin Walk’ event the evening of Oct. 31. The inaugural Pumpkin Walk was a huge success for the community. It was attended by more than 2500, 1400 hot-dogs were handed out to hungry trick or treaters, an amazing fire show was presented by Farrell Agencies and Re/MAX Blue Chip Reality, 12 businesses decorated booths and handed out candy, a scary trail wound through the grounds, and to finish the evening a large crowd gathered to watch fireworks. The fun-filled evening is set to return this Halloween with lots of ghoulish goodness for the entire family.

Snowarama Snowmobile enthusiasts will converge on Yorkton on Feb. 6, 2016, to support a provincial charity event and celebrate the 39th Anniversary of Easter Seals Snowarama. Yorkton’s largest snowmobile event raises money for Easter Seals Saskatchewan. Deana Jesmer, Community Relations Coordinator with Saskatchewan Abilities Council in Yorkton noted, “$1.85 million dollars has been raised for children with disabilities in the province … “Participants and riders travel from all of the prairie provinces and as far as B.C. to attend Snowarama and raise funds for children with disabilities.” The money goes to programs such as “Camp Easter Seal; a fully wheelchair accessible summer camp, Summer Fun Program; an urban day camp focused on recreational and leisure activities in the community for children with disabilities and Adaptive Technology Services; computers and technology are used to minimize the impact of having a disability are the programs that are funded through
fundraisers like Snowarama,” said Jesmer. Riders have their choice of two loops on beautifully groomed trails and receive complimentary meals, fuel for their sleds and a chance to win a 2016 Yamaha snowmobile. Yorkton’s “snowmobile friendly” trail system means you can access city amenities right from your sled. Jesmer said it is the participants who make the event a success. “The community involvement and continued support have made Snowarama the long term success that it is,” she said. “Many of the riders participated in the very first Snowarama and have great stories to share. “The Snowarama committee is also a dedicated group and many have been involved since the first event. And of course the group of dedicated riders that attend each year, regardless of the snow conditions, they raise funds and make a difference to children with disabilities.” Call 1-866-301-0031 for more information or online at www. snowarama.ca

Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling After a hugely successful debut in 2014, the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling is returning to Yorkton in December. Local organizer said the response in 2014 was better than anyone had expected. Leading up to the event a year ago Adam said they went into it expecting it to a good event for the city. “We were interested in getting the Grand Slam since Yorkton has always been such a good curling community so we thought we would try to get one of the major events in Canadian curling to our city,” he said. “With our previous events being well attended we knew that the players would enjoy coming to our city and playing in front of a big crowd.” Still the results exceeded what they were expecting. “I think everybody is a little surprised,” said Adam, adding when tour officials saw the crowds the first day, they began talking of a return. “It just went really well.” Adam said the atmosphere in Yorkton surrounding the event helped. The curlers said they were treated very well, and while the curling of course took centre stage there were other events which contributed to a fantastic week for those attending. While the event was highly popular, and tour officials were interested in returning, Adam said it still took some time to take on a second year. He said there are users of the facilities which are left without access for nearly two weeks, and that had to be considered. “But we thought we could do it one more year,” said Adam, and after some discussions with the City and users it was agreed to do it again. Curling fans certainly appear excited by the event’s return, with some 325 weekend passes sold by mid-September. “That’s at least on pace with last year,” said Adam, who added they fully expect to hit their goal of 500 before the event. The Canadian Open features 16 men’s and 16 women’s teams with a triple knockout tournament format. All teams start in the Pool A brackets. Teams that lose in Pool A are dropped to the Pool B bracket and likewise, teams that fall in Pool B games are then moved into the Pool C bracket. Teams that lose in Pool C are eliminated from playoff contention. Two teams from Pool A, three teams from Pool B and three teams from Pool C qualify for the single-elimination playoff round to determine the champion. It helps that the event attracts some of the best teams in the world. On the men’s side there are top Canadian rinks such Brad

Gushe, Brad Jacobs, Kevin Koe and local rink Steve Laycock. Having a local rink such as the Laycock foursome, “makes a big difference,” offered Adam. So does have international rinks such as Scotland’s David Murdoch. On the women’s side rinks such as Rachel Homan, and Jennifer Jones are expected. In addition to the curling action two cabarets will be held Friday and Saturday with live entertainment. The event will be held Dec. 8 – 13 at the Farrell Agencies Arena. Check out up to-the-date information on the event at http:// www.thegrandslamofcurling.com/curling/canadianopen/

Cross Country Skiing Yorkton is home to some fine cross country skiing. The Yorkton Cross Country Ski Club sets approximately 10 kms of trails at Deer Park. “The trails are set in both classic and skate style grooming,” said club spokesperson Anne Stupak. “We have volunteers that groom our trails on a regular basis or as needed. The trails vary from fairly level to rolling hills and wind along the tree line and spruce groves.” When events are held amenities are close at hand too. “We have access to the club house to host events and house our ski equipment,” said Stupak. And newcomers to the activity can get a little help as well. “The club does have sets of skis that we loan out to members and we will rent to non-members,” said Stupak. The trails are open and free for all to ski but membership is encouraged to help maintain the equipment and trails. The club meets on a weekly basis for night skiing, but other than special events most ski whenever they wish to.
Stupak said some added events are being planned for the 2015/2016 season. “The Yorkton Cross Country Ski club has plans to host learn-to-ski days for both skate and classic style and waxing clinics,” she said. “Special family events like our annual skiing safari and ski for the gold poker derby are popular and new this year; we plan to host the Sundog Challenge to attract skiers that want to take on more distance in a marathon event.” The club hopes to have the club house open on weekends by volunteers, so that skiers can stop in to warm up and have a coffee or hot chocolate. The club has close to 100 members, many of which are families, and with the ski trails at Deer Park, it is just a short trip to get out and ski. Cross Country skiing is a lifelong sport that anyone of any age group can enjoy. For more information or membership, call Anne Stupak @ 306-783-6617 or email yorktoncrosscountryski@gmail.com
Walking Opportunities There might be a blanket of snow on the ground, but that can enhance the experience of exploring the city via a walking tour. The city is connected to the country’s longest recreational trail – The Trans Canada Trail. A newly erected pavilion serves as a lasting landmark at Logan Green Park to mark the accomplishment and visitors are welcome to stop by to view the names of local area donors who helped make the trail possible. Diyet’s adventurous life is on full display in her music and she often says, ‘yesterday, fishing for our dinner on the ice, the next day, on the stage singing for you” – how awesome is that? www.diyetmusic.com KEN LAVIGNE — Sunday, November 08, 2015, 2:00 p.m. The Road to Carnegie Hall with Ken Lavigne: Singer Ken Lavigne has charmed his way into the hearts of concert goers across North America with his sincere delivery of ballads, show tunes and classical crossover hits in the style of Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groben. Since their first appearance at Toronto’s Harbourfront venue in the summer of 1993, Quartette has quickly become one of the most electrifying collaborations on the Canadian music scene. The four women, Cindy Church, Caitlin Hanford, Gwen Swick and Sylvia Tyson combine formidable individual talents into an astonishing whole. The soaring harmonies and unique arrangements create a musical mosaic with flavours of folk, country, swing and bluegrass all solidly rooted in traditional music. www.quarette.com THE TRAVELLING MABELS — Monday, February 29, 2016, 7:30 p.m. The Travelling Mabels, voted ACMA 2011 “Group of the Year, are a folk/country female trio full of sprit, spunk and laughter. Collectively, their songs bring a wealth of life experience to the stage. Singularly, each woman can vocally stand alone, but once you hear the combined harmony blend, you will know why these three women came together. The beauty of the Mabels is that they represent three generations of women. This has opened the door to a dynamic energy both musically and in the rapport with the audiences that most wouldn’t experience every day. With musical influences from Dolly Paxton & Bob Dylan to Sheryl Crow, along with their comedic, yet often heart-felt take on life, they more than meet a wide range of audience expectations. www.thetravellingmabels.com SAMUEL DEASON — Thursday, March 31, 2016, 7:30 p.m. Samuel Deason presents Kaleidoscope. A project crafted with the intention of delving the depths of emotion and color. Intensity will be artfully controlled through a carefully selected and diverse repertoire contrasting in tension and release, culminating with explosive momentum to the end. Continued on Page 27

Tourism Yorkton It may be winter, with all its snow and cold temperatures, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t things for tourists to do in Yorkton. “Yorkton remains an active city even when the temperatures dip,” said Tourism Yorkton manager Randy Goulden. “There’s always something to do to enjoy even on the coldest of days.” So just what can visitors to Yorkton find to enjoy in the winter months? Goulden said it really depends what a person enjoys. “You can start by enjoying the varied cuisine available in the city,” she said. “We’ve always had fine restaurants, but in recent years we have seen greater diversity in menus which is reflective of the growing ethnic diversity in the city.” Goulden noted the arrival of two excellent sushi restaurants in recent years, and now one highlighting East Indian food, as examples of a changing restaurant culture. “Whether you’re looking for a good steak, great pub fare, pasta, or something a bit more adventurous like sushi, you will find it in Yorkton,” she said. And you will want a hearty meal so you are ready for the adventures ahead in the city. “The Yorkton branch of the Western Development Museum tells the story of immigration to Saskatchewan, and should be on every visitors ‘to-do’ list,” said Goulden. “The displays are great, and a video theatre really enhances the experience of learning about our province’s history.” The Yorkton WDM’s winter hours are; August to Dec. 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday-Friday, 12:00 to 5:00 pm weekends, closed on statutory holidays. January to March 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Tuesday-Friday, 12:00 to 5:00 pm weekends and closed Mondays and statutory holidays. If art is more to your liking the Godfrey Dean Gallery is the place to visit. “The Gallery is really a gem for a city our size,” said Goulden. “Shows often highlight artists noted across Canada, but there is also a dedication to showcase local art. It’s a great balance which provides some extraordinary shows.” The Gallery is open Monday to Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday afternoons from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Closed on Sundays and public holidays. The Gallagher Centre is also a place to check out on any visit to the city. “The Aquatic Centre is a tourist draw on its own,” said Goulden. “The water slide, wave pool and whirl pool are all favourites with swimmers.”
For more info please call (306)786-1740 or email www. gallagherkiosk@yorkton.ca for hours of operation. The Gallagher Centre is also home to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s defending champion Yorkton Terriers, and minor hockey teams across all age groups. “The curling rink hosts some great action over the winter too,” offered Goulden. And the Nexera Flexihall has a walking track for those wanting some exercise away from the snow, and often hosts trade shows and events. If you enjoy the outdoors in winter, Yorkton offers many options to get out with nature. “There is cross country skiing at Deer Park Golf Course, and families love Rodney Ridge as a place to toboggan,” said Goulden. The city is also the hub of an extensive snowmobile trail system which covers most of East Central Saskatchewan, and beyond. “Snowmobiling is a very popular winter activity, and the well-kept trail system extends right into the city so riders have access to services such as restaurants, fuel and lodging,” said Goulden. Then to end the day there is usually music and entertainment to be found in the city. “The Yorkton Arts Council’s Stars for Saskatchewan offers a pretty diverse group of concerts each season,” said Goulden. There are always other festivals and events going on in the city, most listed in this booklet, or on the Tourism Yorkton website at http://www.tourismyorkton.com/

pARTners Gallery A partnership between the Yorkton Arts Council and the Yorkton Public Library gave birth to a community gallery space dedicated to promoting emerging and area artists. Exhibitions are locally curated, or are part of Arts on the Move, the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC) visual arts touring program. Saskatchewan communities are provided with visual and media arts exhibitions accompanied by educational materials designed to complement the Saskatchewan arts education curriculum. Come visit the gallery at 93 Broadway Street West. Schedule: October 15 & November: Unique Luggage Boutique Yorkton and area artists responded to a call to repurpose their old, cast off luggage. Depicting their travels or simply beatified in their own unique way. Come on a little journey of your own and check out how travel has inspired our artists. December 1 – December 23: Heavy Metal Organized and Curated by the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC). Heavy Metal is a group exhibition featuring the works of three Prairie artists: B.A, Conly, Ken Dalgarno, and Mark Vitaris. All three artists have an element of metal in their work, either through imagery or use of the material. The majority of this exhibition is comprised of photography; however three sculptural pieces of various sizes will be included as well as an audio component. B.A.Conly’s metal sculptures are inspired by the Grasslands National Park as well as her personal connection to the Prairie environment. Conly’s work evokes the movement and tone of the prairies as well as the objects and sounds found in this setting. Ken Dalgarno and Mark Vitaris are both photographers.
Dalgarno has photographed the Crooked Trees of Alticane. This grove of genetically mutated trees near Hafford, Saskatchewan proves to be a captivating subject for Dalgarno who prints his photographs on aluminum. This technique adds an elemental quality to the overall tone of the photographs. Mark Vitaris has photographed vehicles that were abandoned in the Prairie. Their decaying and rusted metal bodies provide a unique compositional tool as well as a study in colour and texture. Together, these works create an evocative exhibition; one that encapsulates the unique quality of the Prairie landscape. It is an accessible and professional exhibition that will truly engage with the audience. January – March The community pARTners gallery will feature photographic works in conjunction with the festival of photography happening at the Godfrey Dean Gallery.

Snow Hill A new winter activity is being offered in Yorkton once the snow flies. By unanimous vote early in 2014 Yorkton Council gave its approval for a snowboard hill in the city on Rodney Ridge which is located on Roslyn Avenue. Darcy McLeod, Director of Community Development, Parks & Recreation, told Council at the time a hill for snowboarders has been a consideration for a while in the city. “Over the last number of years, Administration had discussions with community members about the development of a snowboard hill somewhere in the City,” he said. “In the fall of 2013, the discussion turned to Rodney Ridge as there is a natural slope that could be used on the north end of the Park. An inactive reservoir from the old water tower is located in this same spot so Environmental Services was consulted. The result is that no equipment heavier than a bobcat would be permitted on the slope for maintenance and a snow fence or reflective markings will be required to separate an area where a valve for the reservoir still exists.” McLeod said the City would not be building a hill, but will instead work to enhance the natural topography.
“A hill would not actually be built but rather snow will be shaped into a pile at the top of the slope to provide a better starting point for the snowboarders to get down the existing hill,” he said. The hill has been developed with local ‘boarder’ input. The community members have designed features for the slope and will be responsible for all costs to build, install, maintain and remove the features. The hill becomes operational once sufficient snow has fallen.

Godfrey Dean Art Gallery The Godfrey Dean Art Gallery, is a small, intimate gallery where visitors can get up close to work ranging from local to national artists. Located on the corner of Smith Street and Third Avenue, and adjacent to the historic Land Titles Building, the Yorkton Gallery is comprised of two galleries which together total over 2,000 square feet of exhibit space. The GDG proudly represents contemporary artwork from local, regional and national artists. Exhibits change on roughly a monthly basis making repeated visits a must for regular travelers, especially with the free admission. The aim of the gallery is to offer as much variety in subject matter and various artistic mediums and styles as possible. Gallery Director Don Stein said the Godfrey Dean has an inviting atmosphere visitors will enjoy, adding the first thing which comes to his mind “is how beautiful and welcoming it is.” “Large windows surrounding the lobby keep it well lit, and the 2nd floor vantage point offers an expansive view of the streetscape, buildings and lots of trees.” “The two exhibition spaces themselves are also surprisingly spacious, with high ceilings and plenty of wall space.” The Yorkton region has a unique cultural blend. It is the responsibility of its public art gallery, The Godfrey Dean, to reflect the issues and concerns within this community. “Our local resources are what distinguishes the Godfrey Dean Art Gallery,” said Stein. “People want to see art that reflects the local community and environment in some way. The gallery has the unique ability to draw on local and regional artists and exhibit their work, which is often inspired by our area, and the people who inhabit it. Visitors, especially tourists, appreciate the opportunity to see artists whose work is readily available to us in Yorkton, but not in other locations. The Godfrey Dean is the only professional public gallery within a 150 km radius of Yorkton. To learn more or to obtain a current exhibition schedule visit: www.deangallery.ca or call 786-2992. The Gallagher Centre The Gallagher Centre in Yorkton is a central gathering point for events throughout the fall and winter. When snow is blanketing the ground many look to the Gallagher Centre Water Park for a place to relax and have fun. The Water Park features a two-storey waterslide, a wave pool with zero depth beach entry, lazy river, hot tub, steam and sauna rooms and a 25-metre, five lane swimming pool. That means there is something for everyone in the family to enjoy. An exciting aquatic climbing wall, which boasts one and a half stories of intense climbing for all ages, is another popular feature at the water park. Either side of the wall presents a different difficulty level and when the panels get rearranged there are new challenges to be faced. The wall offers hours of fun for those who climb to the top – then fall into the deep water. The wall is open to the public during leisure swim times. For those looking for something less physical there are the water options, including just relaxing in hot tub and enjoying the warm water. And the water park has a range of admission fees to fit all budgets, with special rates for large groups. With monthly special events and extended leisure swim times on civic holidays it’s a great place to spend time with family on a visit to Yorkton or when just stopping through – all you need is a swim suit and a sense of adventure. Party packages including a private party room, food from our in-house concession and hours of fun in the pool are also just a phone call away. More information can be obtained by calling 786-1740 or email waterpark@yorkton.ca The Farrell Agencies Arena (FAA) is of course a focal point as the ice arena is the home of the Yorkton Figure Skating Club, Yorkton Terriers, Yorkton RawTec Maulers, and numerous minor hockey teams. In the case of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Terriers they are in the midst of defending back-to-back league titles in 2013 and 2014, as well as winning the RBC Cup emblematic of a Canadian championship in 2014. Last season was not as successful so fans and visitors will be watching for a resurgence this time around. The Terrier schedule can be found at www.yorktonterriers.com The FAA is Yorkton’s favourite ice arena for local recreational hockey groups and various private ice rentals. Public Skating is available at the Farrell Agencies Arena Sunday evenings, when no hockey games are scheduled The FAA is also host to various large venue concerts and trade shows, and has hosted such events as Jonny Reid, Lord of the Dance, the Shriner’s Circus, and the SIGA Pow Wow. The FAA is able to accommodate events up to 3400 people. The Nexera Flexihall as a facility is most commonly used
as a sports facility hosting track meets, walking track patrons, soccer and volleyball tournaments and tennis. The Nexera Flexihall is also a popular alternative for large functions such as grad, tradeshows, special events celebrations and concerts. The Nexera Flexihall is able to accommodate events up to 4000 people. For meetings the National Bank Convention Place is Yorkton’s Premier location for events ranging from a 20 person boardroom to a 350 person banquet. The Gallagher Centre also hosts a number of major events over the winter months. Grain Millers Harvest Showdown runs Nov 4 – 7, 2015 The Yorkton Gun and Hobby Show will take place Feb 27 & 28, 2016 The show will feature everything from hunting rifles, to military weapons, to antique firearms and more. Santa Parade Everybody loves a parade. And no parade is better than one visited by Old Saint Nick himself. And that is why Yorkton’s 18th Annual Santa Claus Parade is so popular. Filled with colourful, festive floats, Christmas décor and cheer, and of course the man-of-the-hour Santa, the parade is guaranteed to mesmerize all who come out to watch. Penny Sandercock, one of the parade’s organizers said the parade was created as a way to kick-off the festive season. “It is a way of sharing a festive season with the community; giving to those that may not be as fortunate -- small toys/free movies/hotdogs and hot chocolate -- and allowing the local businesses to use that day for Christmas promotions in retail outlets ,” she said, adding it has proven very popular. “Hotels have filled up. The Gallagher Centre is used for skating and swimming and the community was a very busy place. “The day is usually kicked off the Christmas lights on Broadway and Santa’s appearances at the Parkland Mall.”

Yorkton Exhibition Association, Yorkton Business Improvement District, City of Yorkton and Yorkton Chamber of Commerce join forces to make sure Santa has a bag of goodies to hand out that day too. And Yorkton Coop has again donated 3,000 Candy Canes that will be handed out along the parade Route by the volunteers. Prior to the parade, slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. caroling will be in the Western Financial City Park provided by GX94. The fun-filled event is guaranteed to light up the streets of Yorkton and brighten the holiday spirits. To take in the cheery lights and sounds just head to Broadway Street and you’re certain not to miss the action. Sandercock said the parade has become a seasonal favourite because of the joy it brings. “I think the joyous atmosphere and the night parade is exciting for the children,” she said. “A lot of children do not get to see Santa anywhere else especially if the Mall does not have appearances. Parents take the opportunity to make it a day or a weekend of Christmas shopping while children take in the free movie matinee. This year’s parade kick-off is at 5:45 p.m. Nov. 28. For further details contact the Yorkton Exhibition office at 783-4800.

Kids Expo The Annual Kids Expo is scheduled for the weekend of March 19 and 20. Joelle Bohn, with Joey Children’s Apparel which presents the Expo said the event was started because she saw a growing local need for such a showcase. “What made me launch this event was that I wanted to give back to the community in a different way if possible,” she said. “I noticed while at a buying show in Edmonton that there was a Kids Expo going on at the same time there just in a different hall. I thought this same idea would work well in this city at the end of the wintery months when kids and parents feel trapped indoors and just need something to do.” And the event just seems to get bigger and bigger, although Bohn said they are now refocusing on what the event was initially meant to be. “The event has come a long way since we started last year I pushed it to the absolute max and this year we are going to go back down to the basics of things,” she said. “This year we want more activities for the kids and less of a trade show atmosphere. We have been lucky to partner with some great businesses over the years that have the same vision we do. So we are hoping things fall into place nicely this year.” Bohn said an event has to evolve, but it will keep doing what is popular with those attending too. “The target market has stayed the same throughout the years,” she said. “This year we might try and target the ‘tweens a bit and set up some activities and things to do for them. As often that market is overlooked.” In terms of why people like the event Bohn said that they give back to the community resonates with people. “The key to its popularity I think is the giving back part

of the expo,” she said. “This year we donated $6,000 to Close Cuts for Cancer. With that money they were able to buy CozyComfy Tees for all children in treatment in the province of Saskatchewan. It also allowed us to buy trophies to hand to the kids for when treatment was finished for these kids. The stories we received from all over Saskatchewan of people thanking us was amazing. It was something so small but the Kids Expo allowed me to give back and I love doing that … “The money this year will be going to a charity that is close to my personal heart Seeds of Hope Orphanage. This orphanage is based in Africa but actually my cousin’s family runs it and they are from BC. It has always been something really important to me and eventually I would love to go down there and help. But for now we are looking to send funds down there to help with whatever is needed.” As for the next event, it will be split up a bit. “The Princess Ball that we did upstairs in the convention centre will actually be moved to January,” said Bohn. “This will allow us to focus strictly on the Kids Expo, and what it needs. “As for bigger and better I always try to bring new things in as I find like any show it gets stale if the same things are seen.” “I think the support of the community has made it so successful without that we wouldn’t have a show at all,” she said. “Also my volunteers/family/friends who work the whole entire show with me make it that much more special for me, as the show wouldn’t run without these people. “I also think sponsors in the community have made this event well known, which has allowed for a much better event and much more money being able to be donated to a great cause.”
