Tourism facilities When it comes to hosting an event, whether it’s a business meeting, a major convention, wedding, or sporting event, Yorkton has the facilities. “That’s one of the great things about a city like Yorkton, its small enough anyone coming into an event can find their way around easily, but we are large enough to have a full range of quality services,” said Tourism Yorkton Executive Director Randy Goulden. Goulden said it starts with accommodations and food. “Whether you need a room for a night, or to book 100 rooms for a convention Yorkton has a number of fine hotels and motels,” she said. “And our restaurants range from, providing burgers on the go as you travel, to those offering fine dining. “There are of course private areas in some of the restaurants for small meetings as well.” When it comes to larger gatherings, that perfect wedding, or fraternal convention, Yorkton has the facilities for that too. The Painted Hand Casino, SIGN on Broadway, St. Mary’s Cultural Centre, Godfrey Dean Cultural Centre and the City’s own Gallagher Centre all have spaces to accommodate gatherings from just a few intimate friends, to a high level business gathering, to provincial conventions.

VisitorGuidePage02.indd 1

“We’re fortunate in Yorkton to have such a range of facilities,” said Goulden. “It has allowed the city to be the site of events from the Parkland Expo and Sunflower Craft Show & Sale, the annual SUN convention and the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation convention.” Should someone need a little help planning an event in the city Tourism Yorkton can help there as well. They have a Convention and Event Planning Guide and a Wedding Planning Guide on their website; www.tourismyorkton.com

Red Moon Road — Friday, March 22, 2019, 7:30 p.m. Red Moon Road was formed in 2012 by Daniel Jordan, Sheena Rattai and Daniel Peloquin-Hopfner, ‘Sorrows and Glories’ (their third album) has delighted listeners worldwide. The three collaborative yet distinct writers frame immaculately crafted songs with original and innovative instrumental work. With tastes of Albertan country, Parisian aires, banjo driven anthems and the tradition folk storytelling in a Canadiana style, the music carries the stories as compellingly as the lyrics. The Winnipeg folk trio is known for surviving adversity, spinning stories into songs and, more often, breaking hearts with stunning musicianship. Live, Red Moon Road makes a much bigger sound than one would expect from a trio. In an impressive wellchoreographed show, bordering on spectacle, the trio incorporates impeccable three-part harmonies, a roots drum kit split entertainingly but pragmatically between two band members and an acoustic guitar rigged to also be a

With similarities between Collins’ and John’s voices, Collins brings to the stage the unmistakable enthusiasm that was a hallmark of a John Denver concert. Performing John Denver’s famous hits such as Rocky Mountain High, Take Me Home, Country Roads, Annie’s Song, and many more, Chris Collins and Boulder Canyon are committed to keeping the music and message of John Denver alive. As one reviewer of their East Coast shows wrote, “The trick is developing a unique show and style that represents the artist while brushing their music with original style.... Cross Country Ski Yorkton is home to some fine cross country skiing. The Yorkton Cross Country Ski Club sets approximately 10 kms of trails at Deer Park. “The trails are set in both classic and skate style grooming,” said club spokesperson Anne Stupak. “We have volunteers that groom our trails on a regular basis or as needed. The trails vary from fairly level to rolling hills and wind along the tree line and spruce groves.” When events are held amenities are close at hand too. “We have access to the club house to host events and house our ski equipment,” said Stupak. And newcomers to the activity can get a little help as well. “The club does have sets of skies that we loan out to members and we will rent to non- members,” said Stupak. The trails are open and free for all to ski but membership is encouraged to help maintain the equipment and trails. The club meets on a weekly basis for night skiing, but other than special events most ski whenever they wish to. Stupak said some added events are being planned for the upcoming season. “The Yorkton Cross Country Ski club has plans to host learn-to-ski days for both skate and classic style and waxing clinics,” she said. “Special family events like our annual skiing safari and ski for the gold poker derby are popular and new this year; we plan to host the Sundog Challenge to attract skiers that want to take on more distance in a marathon event.” The club hopes to have the club house open on Sundays from 12:00 – 4:00 pm by volunteers, so that skiers can stop in to warm up and have a coffee or hot chocolate. The club has close to 100 members, many of which are families, and with the ski trails at Deer Park, it is just a short trip to get out and ski. Cross Country skiing is a lifelong sport that anyone of any age group can enjoy. For more information or membership, call Anne Stupak @ 306-783-6617 or email yorktoncrosscountryski@gmail.com

Tourism winter fun It may be winter, with all its snow and cold temperatures, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t things for tourists to do in Yorkton. “Yorkton remains an active city even when the temperatures dip,” said Tourism Yorkton manager Randy Goulden. “There’s always something to do to enjoy even on the coldest of days.” So just what can visitors to Yorkton find to enjoy in the winter months? Goulden said it really depends what a person enjoys. “You can start by enjoying the varied cuisine available in the city,” she said. “We’ve always had fine restaurants, but in recent years we have seen greater diversity in menus which is reflective of the growing ethnic diversity in the city.” “Whether you’re looking for a good steak, great pub fare, pasta, or something a bit more adventurous like sushi, you will find it in Yorkton,” she said. And you will want a hearty meal so you are ready for the adventures ahead in the city. “The Yorkton branch of the Western Development Museum tells the story of immigration to Saskatchewan, and should be on every visitors ‘to-do’ list,” said Goulden. “The displays are great, and a video theatre really enhances the experience of learning about our province’s history.” The Yorkton WDM’s winter hours are; August to Dec. 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday, 12:00 to 5:00 pm weekends, closed on statutory holidays. From January to March the hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. weekends and closed Mondays and statutory holidays. If art is more to your liking the Godfrey Dean Gallery is the place to visit. “The Gallery is really a gem for a city our size,” said Goulden. “Shows often highlight artists noted across Canada, but there is also a dedication to showcase local art. It’s a great balance which provides some extraordinary shows.” The Gallery is open Monday to Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday afternoons from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Closed on Sundays and public holidays. The Gallagher Centre is also a place to check out on any visit to the city. “The Aquatic Centre is a tourist draw on its own,” said Goulden. “The water slide, wave pool and whirl pool are all favourites with swimmers.” For more info please call (306)786-1740 or email www.gallagherkiosk@yorkton.ca for hours of operation. The Gallagher Centre is also home to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s defending champion Yorkton

Terriers and minor hockey teams across all age groups. “The curling rink hosts some great action over the winter too,” offered Goulden. And the Nexera Flexihall has a walking track for those wanting some exercise away from the snow, and often hosts trade shows and events. If you enjoy the outdoors in winter, Yorkton offers many options to get out with nature. “There is cross country skiing at Deer Park Golf Course, and families love Rodney Ridge as a place to toboggan,” said Goulden. The city is also the hub of an extensive snowmobile trail system which covers most of East Central Saskatchewan, and beyond. “Snowmobiling is a very popular winter activity, and the well-kept trail system extends right into the city so riders have access to services such as restaurants, fuel and lodging,” said Goulden. Then to end the day there is usually music and entertainment to be found in the city. “The Yorkton Arts Council’s Stars for Saskatchewan offers a pretty diverse group of concerts each season,” said Goulden. There are always other festivals and events going on in the city, most listed in this booklet, or on the Tourism Yorkton website at http://www.tourismyorkton.com/

The Gallagher Centre

The Gallagher Centre in Yorkton is a central gathering point for events throughout the fall and winter. When snow is blanketing the ground many look to the Gallagher Centre Water Park for a place to relax and have fun. The Water Park features a two-story waterslide, a wave pool with zero depth beach entry, lazy river, hot tub, steam and sauna rooms and a 25-metre, five lane swimming pool. That means there is something for everyone in the family to enjoy. An exciting aquatic climbing wall, which boasts one and a half stories of intense climbing for all ages, is another popular feature at the water park. Either side of the wall represents a different difficulty level and when the panels get re-arranged there are new challenges to be faced. The wall offers hours of fun for those who climb to the top – then fall into the deep water. The wall is open to the public during leisure swim times. For those looking for something less physical there are the water options, including just relaxing in hot tub, sauna and steam room. And the water park has a range of admission fees to fit all budgets, with special rates for large groups they also offer small ‘family sized’ group rates, provided 1 – 2 adults are a part of the group and new, and more affordable, monthly passes available, making it even more available for avid swimmers to visit. The Farrell Agencies Arena (FAA) is of course a focal point as the ice arena is the home of the Yorkton Figure Skating Club, Yorkton Terriers, Yorkton RawTec Maulers, and numerous minor hockey teams. In the case of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Terriers they are a perennially strong team having won backto-back league titles in 2013 and 2014, as well as winning the RBC Cup emblematic of a Canadian championship in 2014. The Terrier schedule can be found at www.yorktonterriers. com The FAA is Yorkton’s favourite ice arena for local recreational hockey groups and various private ice rentals. Free public skating is available at the Farrell Agencies Arena Sunday evenings, when no hockey games are

scheduled. The Nexera Flexihall as a facility is most commonly used as a sports facility hosting track meets, walking track patrons, soccer and volleyball tournaments and tennis. The Nexera Flexihall is also a popular alternative for large functions such as grad, tradeshows, special events celebrations and concerts. The Nexera Flexihall is able to accommodate events up to 1200 people. For meetings the National Bank Convention Place is Yorkton’s Premier location for events ranging from a 15 person boardroom to a 300 person banquet. The Gallagher Centre also hosts a number of major community events throughout the year. Grain Millers Harvest Showdown runs Nov 7-10, 2018. The Yorkton Gun and Hobby Show will take place Feb 23&24, 2019. The show will feature everything from hunting rifles, to military weapons, to antique firearms and more. Those with an interest in firearms can also expect to see hand guns, a variety of ammunition, reloading equipment and even archery supplies. The Parkland Outdoor Show and Expo, one of the premier outdoor shows in western Canada, is scheduled for April 6 & 7, 2019. Over 100 exhibits from all walks of outdoor pursuits – from hunting and fishing, to trapping, hiking and camping – will delight those who attend this Yorkton event. Other events upcoming include: Remembrance Day, Nov. 11, 2018 Parkland College Career and Employment Fair, Dec. 4, 2018 City Wide Christmas Party, Dec. 8, 2018 Troyanda’s Malanka, Jan. 12, 2019 Robbie Burns, Jan. 26, 2019 Snow-a-Rama, Feb. 8 & 9, 2019 DR Auto Show, Feb. 19 – 24, 2019 Children’s Expo, March 16 & 17, 2019 All events at the Gallagher Centre or throughout the city are listed on the events calendar at www.yorktonevents.com The Gallagher Centre kiosk also provides a range of services, including Ticketsplus (Terrier games and select events in Yorkton), and lottery retail sales. Information regarding all rentals at the Gallagher Centre including the FAA, Nexera Flexihall, National Bank Convention Place, and the Indoor Water Park is available through the Events Team @ 306-786-1740, or by visiting our website www.gallaghercentre.com

Tourism Yorkton When it comes to activities to attract people to Yorkton there always seems to be something new just on the horizon. And this year fans of bull riding will want to be at this year’s Grain Millers Harvest Showdown as the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Canada’s Touring Pro Division (TPD) will be making its inaugural stop in Yorkton. The Pro Division of PBR Canada regularly features Canada’s best bull riders along with top international athletes, squaring off against the rankest bucking bulls from the nation. “The Yorkton Exhibition is excited to be putting on such a high profile event. The caliber of the PBR will have attendees see some of the best bull riders and the best bulls compete as a part of the two nights at Harvest Showdown” said Ron Hanishewsky – General Manager of the Yorkton Exhibition. “We are pleased to be a part of the tour and leading into the finals and looking forward to two great nights of entertainment and bull riding in Yorkton.” Jason Davidson, Director of Operations for PBR Canada, and event producer for the upcoming Yorkton rodeo said the event will bring PBR to a new area. The bull riding action begins at 7:00 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday, (Nov. 9-10), presented by Yorkton New Holland. All riders will attempt one bull each during Friday’s Round 1 and Saturday’s Round 2. Following the second round, the Top 10 will advance to the Championship Round for one more ride and a chance at the event title. In addition to competing for points towards the Canadian national standings, riders will also have the opportunity to earn world points in an effort to earn a berth onto the elite PBR: Unleash The Beast. Davidson said the Yorkton event is the same calibre of bull riding being seen on TSN2 this year with the Monster Energy Tour, adding people can tune in and get a good feel for the excitement of the event to be held in the city in November. The Yorkton event will mark the final Canadian tour stop prior to the season-culminating PBR Monster Energy Canadian Finals, presented by Mac’s/Circle K and Dakota Dunes Casino, on Nov. 23-24 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where the 2018 PBR Canada Champion will be crowned. Randy Goulden, manager of Tourism Yorkton said just because it is the fall and winter it doesn’t mean there aren’t lots of things to do, the new PBR event an example. Sure, it might be colder but Yorkton remains an active community and a centre for tourists to visit. “In Saskatchewan we don’t let something like snow and a bit of cold stop us from being active,” said Randy Goulden,

Page 25

manager of Tourism Yorkton. “Certainly in Yorkton there are always are things going on.” That is especially true leading up to the December holiday season. “With Yorkton being the hub of a large trading area, we have lots of people coming here to do their Christmas shopping,” she said. And there are some great events surrounding the season too. “It can be as simple as enjoying a drive around the city to enjoy the home decorations, to taking advantage of shopping opportunities to watching the Santa Claus Parade.” The annual parade will be held this year on Saturday, Nov 24. The Christmas season even gets extended in Yorkton and region, said Goulden, who reminded many in the area mark the season by the Julian Calendar, Jan. 7. The winter season is also an active time for sports. Goulden said there are always hockey games for visitors to enjoy, the Junior Terriers, AAA Midget Maulers and a couple of dozen minor league teams. “And we can’t forget curling and figure skating either,” she said, adding “cross country skiing is also very popular.” The city is also part of a wide-ranging snowmobile trail system which brings many to the season. “Once the new year arrives there always seems to be something going on. We have the Stars for Saskatchewan concert series, trade shows and art shows,” said Goulden. “Winter is just another season of activities and fun in our city.”

Pumpkin Walk

If you are looking for some fun over the Halloween weekend, then mark the annual Pumpkin Walk on your calendar. This year’s spooky event will take place on Oct. 27, at Jaycee Beach from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The theme this year is “Gory Graveyards”. There will be more than 1100 pumpkins (all locally grown), lining two trails to explore. The pumpkins are all carved by the local school children, senior’s home residents and community groups. Once again local business will be lining the paths where the little ones can trick or treat from. In 2017, more than 11,000 people attended the event in a two-hour period. Bruce Thurston with Yorkton Co-op added he was “extremely happy with the turnout from last year and we look forward to making some changes to this year’s event.” There will be fireworks again this year to end the night. Admission is free and there will be free hot dogs and drinks during the event. Shuttle buses will run again from designated areas.

The event is one which has proven popular in the past and has gained recognition as well, being nominated for “Community Event of the Year by Saskatchewan Tourism.

Snowarama

Join us in Yorkton on Feb. 9, 2019, to support the 42nd Annual Easter Seals Snowarama. Yorkton’s largest snowmobile event raises money for Easter Seals Saskatchewan. Deana Jesmer, Community Relations Coordinator with SaskAbilities in Yorkton noted, “Over $2.5 million dollars has been raised for children experiencing disability in the province … “Participants and riders travel from all of the Prairie Provinces and as far as B.C. to attend Snowarama and help send kids to Camp Easter Seal. In 2019 we will celebrate the 42nd Anniversary of Snowarama!! We are so grateful for the countless people that have contributed to Snowarama’s long running success!” The funds raised support: •Camp Easter Seal; a fully wheelchair accessible summer camp •Summer Fun Program; an urban day camp focused on recreational and leisure activities in the community for children with disabilities •Adaptive Technology Services; computers and technology are used to minimize the impact of having a disability. Riders have their choice of two loops on beautifully groomed trails and receive complimentary meals, fuel for their sleds, and a chance to win a brand new snowmobile. Yorkton’s snowmobile friendly trail system means you can access city amenities right from your sled. Jesmer said it is the participants who

make the event a success. “The community involvement and continued support have made Snowarama the long term success that it is,” she said. “Many of the riders participated in the very first Snowarama and have great stories to share. “The Snowarama committee is also a dedicated group and many have been involved since the first event in 1977. And of course the group of dedicated riders that attend each year, regardless of the snow conditions, they raise funds and make a difference to children experiencing.” Call 1-866-301-0031 for more information or online at www.snowarama.ca

Gallagher Centre Water Park

The Gallagher Centre Water Park is a rare oasis for visitors to enjoy. Located at Yorkton’s west end along Broadway Street it features a two-storey waterslide, a wave pool with zero depth beach entry, lazy river, hot tub, steam and sauna rooms and a 25-metre, five lane swimming pool. An exciting aquatic climbing wall boasts one and a half stories of intense climbing for all ages. The wall offers hours of fun for those who climb to the top – then fall into the deep water. What other fitness regime can offer this much fun? The wall is open to the public during leisure swim times. There are a range of admission fees to fit all budgets. With monthly special events and extended leisure swim times on civic holidays it’s a great place to spend time with family on a visit to Yorkton or when just stopping through – all you need is a swim suit and a sense of adventure. Walking Opportunities There might be a blanket of snow on the ground, but that can enhance the experience of exploring the city via a walking tour. The city is connected to the country’s longest recreational trail – The Trans Canada Trail. A newly erected pavilion serves as a lasting landmark at Logan Green Park to mark the accomplishment and visitors are welcome to stop by to view the names of local area donors who helped make the trail possible. An 18,000-kilometre recreational corridor winding its way through every province and territory – the Trans Canada Trail links over 800 communities along its route. Walking is “… a really great way to see the area, to enjoy what we have to offer and to get some physical activity at the same time,” points out Randy Goulden, manager of Tourism Yorkton. But there are also options which focus on the rich culture of the city, including a walking tour of the city’s downtown area to view some of the historic sites, and another which highlights outdoor art. Visit www.tourismyorkton.com or stop by the Tourism office for additional walking trail opportunities. • MOTOR LICENCE ISSUER • HOME • AUTO • FARM •COMMERCIAL • INDUSTRIAL • TRAVEL • HEALTH CARE

Snowboard Hill A winter activity is being offered in Yorkton once the snow flies. Back in 2014 Yorkton Council gave its approval for a snowboard hill in the city on Rodney Ridge which is located on Roslyn Avenue. At the time a hill for snowboarders has been a consideration for a while in the city. In the fall of 2013, the discussion turned to Rodney Ridge as there is a natural slope that could be used on the north end of the Park. The hill was developed with local ‘boarder’ input. The hill becomes operational once sufficient snow has fallen.
