Honouring Our

Graduates of 2021 DREAMBUILDERS HIGH SCHOOL

PAGE 2 Graduation 2021 SHHS

SHHS Valedictory Address By Kael DePape Good afternoon teachers, family, friends, special guests, and graduates. It is an honour to be representing the 2021 graduating class of Sacred Heart High School as valedictorian. My name is Kael DePape and if you know me I’m not perfect, so I’m probably not going to give you a perfect graduation speech. Then again, nobody is. But, I hope it will be a good message people can relate to and be a little fun. The greatest lesson most of us can take away from this year is being able to adapt and overcome. Students had some big challenges as well as disappointments. I’m sure when school first got shut down last March, we were all pretty pumped to get an extra couple months of summer. We all thought by fall it would be back to a normal school year. However, that was far from the truth. There was nothing really normal about this year, from the long classes and to the long breaks in the middle of them. We all have our own interests- some of us like sports more than others, and some of us would rather be a part of drama productions and clubs. But we all can relate to not being able to do the things we enjoyed because of the pandemic. For some, they might have missed Mr. Jonassen trying to hype you up before football by yelling words that you cannot comprehend. Or you missed a drama production and Mr. Digout being brutally honest with you but still encouraging you and always making it a time you looked forward to. Many people also missed making it to provincials for the first time... or maybe one last time. I know that most people did these activities just for fun, or to be around others, or to be a mentor to the

younger students, but they were still things we couldn’t do in our last year. It is a shame that most of you didn’t experience S.W.E.C. I had the privilege of going on the canoe trip twice and let me tell you, it was probably the best memory of my high school career. Even Kael DePape our graduation has Valedictorian not been what we Class of 2021 imagined growing up, but we’ve celebrated our accomplishments and made the best of it. Students weren’t the only people around our school that experienced huge changes in their lives. Some teachers had to completely change their way of teaching. Our staff had their jobs made much more difficult, but were positive through it all. Going from being a school that did lots of group projects and group activities to having to do everything physically distanced and online was a big change. For example, before the pandemic, Mme. Barton had her students playing games and doing experiments. I’m sure that anyone who had a class close to her room would be able to confirm that at moments, it would get a little crazy. Although, she still gets to play her music and movies at full volume. These are all moments that we missed and challenges we faced, but in the end we all learned something from this year. That being…. Continued on Page 3

Continued from Page 2 life doesn’t always go as planned. We have to learn from our experiences, adapt, and always look for something positive in every situation. Sometimes we get caught up with the idea that to make a difference in the world we have to do something incredibly amazing like cure cancer or something like that. While in reality, making a difference is as easy as making someone laugh, making people feel included, or helping them at a time of need. At Sacred Heart, I believe that we are some of the most genuine and caring people. We learned this and improved on it through attending a catholic school and taking Christian ethics. So I challenge you, when we leave this school, continue to make a difference in the lives of your family and friends. Make a difference in your community, and finally, try to make a difference in the world no matter how large or small it may be. Don’t compare yourself to others, be yourself. Do not let others define who you are or determine what you should achieve. We all have different interests and skills. Do what makes you happy and do what you want to do. Like Albert Einstein once said “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” So go out and do what you enjoy, be yourself. Don’t measure yourself by how much money you make or how many things you have. Success looks different to everyone. Find your own definition of success whether it be financial, helping others, having a family, getting a career you love or as simple as finding your own purpose in life. Find your definition of success and go after it every day. I’d also like to take the opportunity to say a

few thank you’s. Over the past thirteen years, our teachers have helped us develop the tools to become successful in the next stage of our lives. We’ve created lifelong bonds with many of the teachers while having the honor of taking their classes. I am very thankful for my french teachers, they gave me a very special gift. Mme Forgeron and Mme Barton, I won’t forget all the memories our class has made over the years. I want to thank all of our other french teachers as well. French students truly become a family. All the teachers and staff have been people we could go to and share our ups and downs. They helped us through our dark days, and cheered us on during good ones. For that, I want to say thank you. I also want to thank all of the staff that work behind the scenes. The caretakers had their jobs made extremely difficult over this past year. They worked hard to keep our school clean and safe so we could stay open. Thank you to Mrs. Kawchuk and Mrs. Seitz for always being there for our every need. If we ever had any questions, they did their best to help us find the answers. But, they would never forget to give you a hard time, especially when you needed a water cup. On behalf of the graduates, I would also like to Continued on Page 4

VALEDICTORY Continued from Page 3 thank Father Louis, Father Ray, Bishop Brian, and the rest of the clergy who have supported us on our faith journey through the years. They have instilled a faith foundation in us that will carry us through the rest of our lives. They all did an amazing job of teaching us, using examples that we could relate to. I want to thank the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate, without their vision and dedication to catholic education none of this today would be possible. And to our parents, I want to thank them for raising us to be the best versions of ourselves. From teaching us to tie our shoes to teaching us how to drive, but then again, I did hit a snowbank three days after getting my license. Through everything, they were always there for us. I know they will continue to support us as we continue our journey in life. These speeches can often get very heavy so I want to leave you smiling. Never forget your favorite and crazy memories:

YRHS Valedictory Address By Laura Gillis Hello Yorkton Regional High School graduates, staff members, and families. Thank you for joining us through your screens today to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduating class of 2021. It is my honour to be delivering the valedictory address this year, a privilege I would not have without the help and support of the Yorkton Regional High School staff, my fellow graduates, and of course, my wonderful and loving family. This year was not what we wanted it to be. There is no denying that. While this might not be how we expected our high school experience to end, these past four years, and all of the lessons learned and friendships made during them, still deserve to be celebrated. We survived and continued to show up in a year that challenged us like no other. I’m sure that as you go off into the world, you will find yourself face to face with many more challenges that must be overcome to achieve your dreams. And right now, it may seem like there’s too much standing in the way of where you want to be, like you’ll never be able to break through all of the glass ceilings and barriers that are holding you down. But you were born to rise. And these past four years have provided you with the skills and the resilience that you need to shatter the glass, break down the doors, think your way through, and continue fighting for what you believe in. But, before you start fighting, you must know what you are fighting for. You need to find what you believe in, what fires you up, what gets you out of bed in the morning. No one else can find that for you. It’s up to each and every one of you to get to know yourself. Turn

all the lights on; open every door. Ask yourself questions you don’t know the answer to, questions you might not like the answer to. To move forward in this world, you must be prepared to reconcile with your own truth. You must be prepared to take the good and the Laura Gillis ugly and embrace Valedictorian it all. You must be Class of 2021 willing to forgive yourself for the mistakes you’ve made, for the opportunities you passed up, for moments you weren’t at your best. Learn from these, but do not let them define you, for you are far more than the sum of your parts. As you search within yourself, I hope you find your passion, your very heart and soul. I hope you find something you would army crawl across a road covered in broken glass to do. I hope you answer the call of the restlessness inside of you, and never let fear keep you from saddling up and riding off to chase your dreams. I hope you find the courage to smile, to laugh, to dream. I hope that you find love. For yourself and for others. And I hope that someday, after all of your hard work, you find peace. I hope you find the ability to welcome yourself with open arms, to live your truth with no apologies or shame, because you are exactly who Continued on Page 16

Graduation 2021 YRHS

VALEDICTORY Continued from Page 15 you are supposed to be, and there is nothing wrong with that. While there is work to be done within, there is also plenty of work to be done in the country we call home. Truth and Reconciliation is something that Canadian citizens must work towards every day. We must be prepared to acknowledge the horrors of racism and residential schools in our nation. We cannot turn our backs on the Indigenous Peoples of this country any longer. If we are to move forward, we must dig up the truth, no matter the cost, and do all that we can to reconcile the unspeakable pain and trauma that centuries of racism and ignorance has inflicted upon the Indigenous Peoples of Canada. And, as the leaders of today and tomorrow, it will be our job to write the policies, sign the petitions, and amplify the voices of those who know more than us, to work towards Truth and Reconciliation. Continue to learn and listen with an open mind and heart, and always ask yourself what you can do to help. Most importantly, never give up because the work gets too hard, or the truth scares you too much. It is the truths that scare us the most that must be confronted to find peace, within ourselves and as a nation. Diversity is what makes Canada beautiful, and we must embrace and honour it. We need to stop letting fear and hate tarnish our world, when there is so much light within it. As your high school careers come to a close, I would like to remind you that nothing lasts forever. This world isn’t going to be plagued by fear forever. There will be a new tomorrow, and Class of 2021, we are in such

a powerful position. Because we get to decide what that tomorrow will look like. We get to control what world the generations after us will inherit. We have a responsibility to give them a future filled with love, bravery, and hope. And we owe it to ourselves, too. We deserve a brighter and better world, and we will get there, someday. All you need is to be kind to the people around you. Treat everyone like they matter, every day, for the rest of your life, and I promise you, the world will be so much better because of it. I’m sure at the beginning of grade nine, you thought you would never leave this place. Back then, graduation day felt like hundreds of years away. There were still lessons to learn, finals to be written, adventures to be had. But now, we’re here. Preparing for a new adventure, that will be like nothing we’ve experienced before. I would like to take the time now to say thank you to the families and teachers who never gave up on us, who supported us, who guided us in our pursuit of excellence. None of us would be here on this virtual stage without you. On behalf of the Graduating Class of 2021, thank you, from the very bottom of our hearts. We will do our best to make you proud. To my graduating peers, I am so excited to see all of the amazing things you will accomplish in the coming years. Never lose sight of who you are and what you believe in, and never stop fighting for what you know is right. Thank you so much for listening, and once again, congratulations to the Graduating Class of 2021!

YRHS Award Recipients e o s e d l d e , h , . s o e w e e s o t n e e t d t d . e s

1. Lerif Patzer Academic Memorial Scholarships - $3,000 in total These awards were established by, and in memory of, Mr. Lerif Patzer of Pasadena, California. Born and raised in Yorkton, Mr. Patzer shared a dream with his brother Mr. Edwin Patzer to become lawyers after WW II. Edwin was killed in action, and Lerif went on alone to law school, eventually attaining the position as Manager of Legal Claims for Great West Life Assurance Co. in Los Angeles. In 1998, when the YRHS Marching 100 bid to participate in the Tournament of Roses Parade, Lerif provided financial support. Lerif’s kindness has allowed him to again provide financial support for years to come to students of the YRHS through his generous endowment of over $50,000. These scholarships are $500 each and are presented to the student who has the highest average in specific courses. The student must be continuing his/her education at the postsecondary level. The recipient for the highest average in Grade 12 sciences is KAVYA SUDARASANAM. With the highest average in AP ELA A30 and AP ELA B30 is LAURA GILLIS.
