YORKTON’S RON CHAN (LEFT) AND DON REED buy lottery tickets together each week, alternating between games. But their choice of the WESTERN 649 for the January 28th draw turned into a million-dollar deal for the pair.
Local men cash in on lotto Con’t from Page 1. Ron and Don purchased their ticket from Ron’s place of business – Chan’s Central Grocery, located on Broadway Street. Ron says, “The evening of the draw, I had my son read me the winning numbers off of the Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) website while I checked them against our ticket. I said, “I think we got six numbers!” I questioned my son, asking if he was sure he read them correctly, and he said yes! Then I went on the computer to check and there was only one winner, in Saskatchewan. I had my son call Don as I was too excited – to put it mildly,” Ron chuckles.
“Ron’s son phoned at 10:51 p.m. and said that his Dad and I had won $1 Million. I said, “Aww, come on,” and hung up. I really didn’t believe him. About 10 minutes later I called him back,” adds Don. The ticket matched all six numbers to win $1 Million. As the ticket was a Combination Play ticket, it won an additional $3,000 in subsidiary prizes, bringing the friends’ total winnings to $1,003,000. Ron says this win will allow him to retire a little sooner than he thought, and enjoy a vacation. Don, on the other hand, says he hasn’t thought too far ahead yet but knows the money will help with some priority expenses.

Library rededicated
By DEVIN WILGER N-R Writer
February was Library Lover’s Month, and it was also the time to celebrate the Yorkton Public Library’s return home to its permanent location. The Library was rededicated recently. Sandra MacColl says that the newly renovated facility represents a new chapter for the library, and as a result it’s taking a new direction, one which MacColl describes as “less institution, more home.” She says that they are going to get new furniture and work with a different layout to make it a more accessible and welcoming place. One area where there is particular pride is a new multi-use room, currently unnamed, which has a fireplace and is designed
to encourage people to “sit down and read.” The room, established in honor of Bob Ribchester, a former board member, also houses materials from the Yorkton Genealogical Society. The space represents the library’s ideal of becoming a “third space,” a place other than home and work where people come to spend time and are comfortable. The library has also seen technology improvements in its new iteration, with a self checkout system being installed for the first time. MacColl would also like to thank the people who helped with helping the library from recovering from the flood, whether they were moving books to and from the temporary location in the Parkland Mall or helping get the restored facility together.

Registry fades, debate forges on Ding dong the witch is dead the wicked witch is dead... well at least in some people’s opinion. The Conservative government says its MPs are celebrating after a historic vote to end the long-gun registry but meanwhile, some opposition MPs and supporters of the registry say the government’s actions are a step backwards, because the registry has been useful in keeping the country’s streets safe. Bill C-19, the Ending the Long Gun Registry Act, is guaranteed to pass through the House of Commons, thanks to the Conservative government’s majority, but more political wrangling is expected to follow. Gun control has been a huge topic of debate in Canada for decades although hunters and sport shooters reviled the registry, and dismantling it became a central plank of Reform, and later, Conservative party policy. Yorkton’s Garry Breitkreuz has worked on the issue throughout. Tony Bernardo, Canada’s leading advocate for gun owners, as executive director of the Canadian Sports Shooting Association and a lobby group called the Canadian Institute for Legislative Action says, “I’ve been working for 15 years to make this happen... It’s a big deal for me.’’ Bernardo says scrapping the longgun registry is already a “defining moment’’ in Canadian people power. “What you’re seeing here, this is democracy in action at its finest... Millions of people spoke up and said we don’t want this, and the government responded and now it’s gone.’’ It’s not paper work that will save lives but stiffer sentences and cracking down on those who are deserving of punishment, not Canada’s law abiding average Joes.
What’s next? Puppies in tupperware? What’s wrong with people? Will they do ANYTHING just to make a fast buck? It’s not happening here and I certainly hope it never does but with that said, there must be something that can be done to stop things like this from going on regardless of where it occurs. Vendors in China have found a new way to rake in dollars and it comes at the expense of thousands of tiny, little lives. While some would liken these little creatures to be no different than an insect, I say the whole concept is cruel and unacceptable. In China, they’re taking live baby turtles and in some instances little fish (whichever is the desire of the consumer) and sealing them inside a small plastic bag. Each baggy, seven centimeters in length, is then filled with colored liquid and made into a key chain. The vendors, who sell the baggies at the entrances to subways or train stations, say the colored water is a “nutrient rich” solution that allows the live creatures shoved inside to live for a few months, after which – if this story couldn’t get any more sad – the animals die. According to the cofounder of the International Center for Veterinary Services the fish and turtles couldn’t survive too long due to the lack of oxygen (obviously),
regardless of how “nutrient rich” the colored water may be. Oh, and rumor also has it after the inevitable death happens… the cadavers are heated in the microwave for 15 seconds and then eaten while the diner enjoys an beer. Ewww.... Shannon Deveau iceIfcold the existence of these key chains isn’t disturbing enough, the fact that they’re not illegal makes them even worse. Apparently China only has a Wild Animal Protection Law, under which the key chains don’t happen to fall. And since there is no law preventing their existence there may not be an end to them anytime soon. In fact, according to the Global Times business is booming. An observer watched one fish key chain and nine turtle key chains sell in just five minutes to both people who think they’re kind of neat, and to others who buy the key chains to free the animals. And that was my thought, that someone should buy them all and then free the creatures. But it’s a catch 22 type deal. If you buy the key chain, you support the business and in turn keep it going. Animal protection groups are now voicing their opinions on the matter and with any luck this practice will be stopped. Making money is fine and dandy, but seriously this is completely crossing the line.
The way I see it... Column
There’s some potential irony in Sony’s PS Vita This week, Sony is releasing the PS Vita, a portable gaming device. It comes with a bunch of cameras, several touch-sensitive surfaces, and various games from Sony’s fairly extensive library of franchises. It’s also entering a market where its very existence is being question, and it has a much more difficult hill to climb than its predecessor, the Playstation Portable, or PSP. Even five years ago, these portable devices made a great deal of sense. It was something to take with you on trips or if you had a lengthy commute, a fun way to pass the time. The problem is, in the intervening years, phones have become able to play assorted games that are a great way to pass the time, and are even more convenient, since most people will have them on their person anyway. Not myself, of course, since my phone tends to be forgotten either on the kitchen counter or my desk, but normal people tend to carry their phone with them. That means that for a lot of people, they have a new distraction, and one that they have anyway. Which isn’t to say that there isn’t a market. Young children can’t get a phone contract, so they’re a great market for such a device, but then we run into new problems. Thing is, young children aren’t known for their vast stores of wealth, and will need their parents
Things I do with words... Column Devin Wilger to buy them any devices. Nintendo, Sony’s main competitor in this sphere, learned this the hard way, as their 3DS console – notable mostly for its 3D screen – launched quite badly. The reason, in the end, was cost, and while it sold well after several price drops, nobody wanted to spend over $200 on the system. The cheapest Vita on the market is $250. Keep in mind, again, that this market is going to face an uphill battle with teenagers or adults. If you already have a fancy phone, it becomes less interesting to have a portable device dedicated to games. So it might be viewed as an error in judgement for Sony to be pushing the Vita towards that market, rather than making something that the much younger crowd can
get excited about. The launch lineup is pitched quite heavily towards teens and adults, but will those people want one? They are going after a market which is going to be significantly harder to actually get buying their product, since they need to convince them to get yet another device. There will be the argument that the games on the Vita will be better than most of the games available on the phones, and I agree. Given that it has regular buttons in addition to touch surfaces it becomes easier to make games that control well. It’s also a more powerful console overall, and something which gives developers much more freedom. This is true, but it doesn’t matter very much. If someone’s looking for the best games, they’re going to go home, where they have a big television or computer monitor, and a device that’s more powerful than the portable device can manage. It’s stuck in the middle ground between the convenient distraction and the dedicated device. I don’t want to declare the Vita dead on arrival, but I do think it’s going to have a difficult time convincing people that it is a worthwhile system. It becomes difficult to justify an in-between device when you can get your distractions in many more convenient places. Interesting that something named Vita could struggle to live.

Canada’s Soviet-style health system Pro-senior policy
To the Editor:
Canadian healthcare costs have mushroomed by more than 260 per cent over the past 15 years to a whopping $130 billion in 2011, with an increasing portion funded by debt. Due largely to runaway health care costs, the provinces racked up a combined deficit of over $30 billion in the 2010/11 fiscal year. Health care already swallows over half of revenues in Ontario and Quebec, and most other provinces will soon be facing the same debilitating prospect. Making matters even worse, global fallout from Eurozone debt crisis, combined with continuing American economic lethargy, are almost certain to reduce provincial and federal revenues. What have Canadians been getting from this health care system that’s slowly strangling public finances? The answer isn’t pretty. The Fraser Institute’s 2010 edition of “Waiting Your Turn” found the average wait time between general practitioner referrals and treatment delivery by a specialist increased to 18.2 weeks. And in a recent Macdonald Laurier Institute survey of 34 OECD countries, Canada ranked 26th in access to physicians and 24th in access to hospitals. If ever there was a time for major surgery on our terminally ill healthcare system, it is now. Yet provincial premiers who gathered in Victoria two weeks ago focussed mainly on how they could extract even more money from Ottawa to keep try and their sinking systems afloat. There was some discussion about being “more efficient” but, like the old phonograph on the doomed Titanic,
that music has been playing over and over while the system sinks ever closer to the water line. Systems that are breaking down exhibit tell-tale symptoms. One is the system actually thwarts those needed to save it. Doctors consistently rank lack of operating room time as the biggest impediment to treatment. Specialists see little point in taking on more cases when their surgical time is limited to just a few hours per week, making wait times for non-life threatening, but frequently debilitating, “elective” surgery painfully long for patients. Another symptom of systemic breakdown is that rationing becomes the only option. Many new doctors aren’t even able to obtain a residency due to what health care administrators term a “lack of resources”. This is happening while physician retirements combined with an aging population portend a pending physician supply crisis. Perhaps if all patients waiting for treatment were to line up at their local hospital, the parallels to Soviet-style rationing would strike home with those who perpetuate the myth that Canada has one of the world’s best health care systems. The stark realities: The system is expensive, but inaccessible. Our health care workers are high quality, but poorly utilized. What to do? Guidance to answering that question can be gained from an ancient Chinese proverb, “One can argue forever about whether a stick is straight or crooked. The only way to find out is to place a straight stick alongside of it.” The 2010 edition of the peer reviewed Euro-Canada Health Consumer Index shows that, despite the fourth highest per capita spending, Cana-
dian health care ranks 25th compared with 33 European countries. In contrast to Canada’s legislation making it a crime for physicians to deliver and for patients to pay for “medically necessary services”, every one of those 33 countries permits a mixture of public and private spending. Those countries have found that, just as when parents choose to send their children to private school while continuing to pay public school taxes, dollars spent voluntarily for private care free up more funds for the public system. As for the alarmist fear-mongering that private treatment reduces resources within the publicly funded system, how could that be true when new doctors can’t even get into the system and when surgeons sit waiting for access to an operating room? Given these realities, it’s understandable that those who can afford to escape Canada’s debilitating wait lists go elsewhere for private treatment, and so do their dollars which could be staying in Canada. Removing the Canada Health Act prohibition against private care would reverse the outflow of money going to international hospitals, better utilize our excellent health care professionals and foster job creating investment in one of the world’s fastest growing sectors. The Canada Health Act stipulation that all Canadians have access to government funded health care would remain sacrosanct and public system costs along with waiting lists would decline. It’s time to move forward to a new, sustainable model for Canadian health care. Gwyn Morgan, Troy Media Corporation.
Pie not big enough or widely enough shared To the Editor: Canada’s pension problem today is rooted in stagnant disposable incomes among middleclass families. Over the past six years, the wealthiest 10 per cent of Canadians have done very well. But the other 90 per cent have not. Low-income people are further behind, and most in the middle are working hard just to stay even. They’re not getting ahead. That’s why most Canadians (outside Saskatchewan and Alberta) believe this country is still in a recession, even though it
ended nearly three years ago. As our sluggish economy stalls even further, unemployment worsens, job quality drops, and household debt balloons above 150 per cent of disposable incomes – most Canadians feel more pessimistic. Major family obligations like post-secondary education for your kids and homecare for sick or elderly loved-ones are putting huge pressures on typical household budgets. Seventy percent of those heading quickly toward retirement face the reality of not having a
private-sector pension to draw upon. They’ll have only the Old Age pension, the Guaranteed Income Supplement (if they qualify), the Canada Pension Plan (if they’ve participated), and any personal savings they have. To those a few years further out – say, in the 45 to 55 age bracket – the Harper government has only a harsh message: You won’t be able to count as much on the Old Age pension. Seventy percent of these folks are living on incomes of less than $40,000/year. Without the Old Age pension, up to a third of them (espe-
cially women) would fall below the poverty line. The best actuarial experts in Canada say the Old Age pension is already sustainable and doesn’t need “fixing”. The world’s best financial rating agencies (Moody’s and Fitch) say Canada doesn’t need a harsh austerity program that slashes public services. What is needed is a concrete plan for economic growth, better productivity, good job creation and stronger disposable incomes for middle-class families. Ralph Goodale, MP, Wascana, SK.
Start with MPs to reform Canadian pensions To the Editor: It might be understandable if a number of Canadians didn’t appreciate Prime Minister Stephen Harper talking about reforming public sector pensions and Old Age Security (OAS) social assistance payments. After all, nobody likes the idea of their retirement plans changing. This is likely true with Mr. Harper’s musings coming on the heels of two reports on MP pensions. Ultimately, Harper is quite right to tackle Canada’s demographic dilemma: the tsunami of aging baby boomers does indeed threaten to swamp the national safety net. By 2030, if something isn’t done, Old Age Security payments are expected to balloon from $36 billion to $108 billion – that’s quite a chunk of change when you consider that the entire federal budget is
about $274 billion this year. So how does the Prime Minister start tightening the tap on entitlements for the elderly, when taxpayers contributed $23.30 for every dollar put into the Parliamentary pension plan by MPs? Even Mr. Harper himself is in line for an annual pension payout of $223,517 if he packs it in at the end of his current term. Of course, the PM will only be 55 years old by then, and presumably, capable of doing something else to make ends meet. But if Harper were to find himself, retired with no other means of support, $223,517 does buy a lot of cat food and kerosene to make it through a chilly Calgary winter. It’s a good thing – having studied piano rather than the guitar or the violin, the PM would face limited options as a street busker. You can’t defend these payments. And smart politicians are not even trying. Since the Cana-
dian Taxpayers Federation published its report on MP pensions, we’ve heard some promising news from both sides of the House of Commons. It started with the Prime Minister’s own words – Harper said in an interview that the issue of parliamentary pensions “will have to be looked at.” Canadians have been phoning, writing, and emailing their politicians in huge numbers, letting them know how they feel about platinum-plated MP pensions. With the next federal budget coming soon, taxpayers need to turn up the heat, and make sure the pork-laden MP pension plan is put on the chopping block, front and centre, with big a carving knife close at hand for Mr. Harper. It’s the necessary first step in long, but ultimately needed, process. Gregory Thomas, Canadian Taxpayer’s Federation.
To the Editor: Prime Minister Stephen Harper has renewed a perennial debate about when Canadians should retire. According to media reports, Harper has in mind changes to the Old Age Supplement (OAS) and the GIS (Guaranteed Income Supplement) that would raise the eligibility age from 65 to 67. Much of the reaction has focused on how such changes would affect public finances and the Canadian economy, essentially asking whether the benefits of reducing the cost of old age income programs, plus the increased labour supply, justifies making older Canadians “worse off.” But that approaches such changes exactly backward. Such reforms, far from taking something away from seniors, are a tiny step in reversing decades of bad policy that has marginalized older Canadians, damaged their health and harmed their morale. Raising the age of eligibility is emphatically not a matter of imposing costs on seniors in order to benefit the rest of the population. It is an exceptionally pro-seniors policy to reduce the incentives to stop working at 65. There was a time when age 65 and retirement were closely linked for a compelling reason. By then a life of labour had left the average worker depleted. A few short years of decline were all that they could expect before death. A Canadian male born in 1966, when the Canada Pension Plan was introduced, would only expect to live to age 68 or so. Today it is 79. Age 65 and the moment when one can no longer reasonably be expected to work have long since parted company. We live longer and in better health. Age 65 is no longer the exhausted tail end of life. Over four-fifths of Canadians say they would like to continue to work even if they had enough money to retire. And nearly half of Canadians of working age already expect to work beyond the age of 65, and not just for economic reasons, according to a survey done for one financial institution: Future retirees are coming more and more to realize that work (although not necessarily any particular job, a distinction many people seem to have difficulty grasping), is closely related to happiness. Put this together with the evidence that older people live longer, healthier and happier when they continue to work and you have a compelling case that our dogged insistence on 65 as the age to encourage retirement has been a cruel policy that has created increasing unhappiness and illhealth for older Canadians. Encouraging retirement at 65 has pushed these costs onto seniors for the benefit of our younger population looking for work. Benefit eligibility at 67 is, therefore, far too timid a reform. A pro-seniors policy would be far more ambitious, looking at 70 or even 72. Even then Canadians would enjoy a longer period of work-free retirement than in 1966. Canada must, of course, continue to look after those incapable of working, whatever their age. Changes must be phased to allow for adjustment in retirement planning. Retirement must go from radical overnight transformation to long slow transition, from full time to part time, balancing work and leisure and matching effort to capacity. And we should use some of the savings from reform to improve retirement conditions for those who do reach the age and state of health where work is no longer possible. Sure, such changes will help public finances and ease the looming labour shortages that darken our economic future. But those are just side benefits. The chief beneficiaries will be older Canadians themselves. Brian Lee Crowley, Managing Director, Macdonald-Laurier Institute.

A typical day on “the Hill” The House of Commons is central to government, and since I first came to Ottawa in 1993, I’ve participated in debates that focussed on some of our nation’s most critical issues. I’ve helped pass and/or defeat legislation that affects my constituency and all Canadians. I’ve worked on issues that will make our history books – and even helped make it happen. Being present in the House rotates between MP’s, but all MPs must attend the daily Question Period , when Opposition MP’s (primarily) question the government on any and every detail of legislation and issues pertaining to our country. The pace is fast, and designed for the media. Numerous caucuses meet on the Hill. The Saskatchewan Caucus, made up of Saskatchewan MPs meets at eight on Wednesday mornings to discuss issues concerning our province –
Parliamentary Report Op-Ed Column by Garry Breitkreuz agriculture, forestry and mining, for example. The National Conservative Caucus meets for two and one half hours on the same morning. I also founded and co-chair the Outdoors Caucus, a non-partisan group of MPs whose goal is to protect the Canadian heritage activities of hunting, fishing, sport shooting and trapping. Parliamentary committees, which meet from 4 to 40 hours per week, take up much of my time. A list of the committees I’ve served on in the past two decades would fill another column. Currently, I serve as co-chair of one of the most crucial and pow-
erful government committees, the Scrutiny of Regulations committee. After committees adjourn, I meet with people wanting to discuss their issues with me. Considerable government work gets done at luncheons and receptions – the most recent a luncheon with the Canada Germany Parliamentary Association, which informed us about European issues, the state of our free trade agreement, and the possibilities of increased trade between our countries. Most MP’s, like myself, often eat on the fly. Just as while travelling, we snatch any available time outside
of meetings to research issues, read briefs, confer with staff, inform ourselves on legislation before the House, or prepare a speech to make in the House. My Hill office sits at the bottom of the Hill. Around 7:30 p.m. I return there for a few hours to handle correspondence, and return calls to constituents and others. Around 9:30-10, I’ll walk back to my apartment. I became an MP to make a difference in the world for my children and grandchildren. I’ve been privileged to affect some of those differences. But a new generation of youth have grown up since I became an MP. I want them to know that that no matter your vocation, if you stick with it long enough, if you do it with integrity and diligence, one day you’ll look over your shoulder and say, as I do, with gratitude and humility: I came. I stayed. And because of that, things are different.
INFLUENCERS CONFERENCE – The Yorkton Armoury recently hosted an Influencers Conference, held to “educate the educator” about the different opportunities in the Canadian Forces and help reach a wider variety of people, from students to adults. Attendees learned about eligibility requirements and opportunities with part-time and full-time programs, as well as what it means to be part of an artillery reserve like the Yorkton unit. True love never dies: why does grief hurt so much? When someone you love has died, there are few words that capture grief’s intensity. Despair, anguish, and devastation come to mind but even these seem inadequate. “Why does grief hurt so much? Why is this grief so incapacitating? If only the hurt weren’t so crushing.” Sound familiar to any of you reading this article? All of us have known hurts before, but none of our previous” ouches” can compare with the hurt we are feeling right now. Nothing can touch the pain of burying a child, a spouse, or any loved one. Yet, most of us have discovered that the sun still comes up each morning, and world still goes on, even when our world seems to be standing still. We too, still have to function. We did not die when our loved one did, even though we wished we could have. So, we are stuck with this pain, this grief, and what do we do with it? Surely we can’t live like this forever! We pray that this pain would just stop. There are no magic formulas for surviving grief. There are a few commonly recognized patterns for grief, but even those are only
FROM MOURNING TO JOY... Column by Margaret Anne Yost guide-lines. What we do know is that the emptiness will never go away. It will become tolerable and liveable some day. There will be a day when we will see the sun shine and hear the birds sing again; and the death of your loved one will not be the first thought on your mind each day. TIME the longest and hardest word in our grieving process. We use TIME to measure so many milestones: The first words spoken, the first steps taken. Time measures our days and world in so many different ways. So what is that we need to do now? I encourage you to please give yourselves TIME to hurt, TIME to grieve, and TIME to cry and TIME to remember. Be nice to yourself! Don’t measure your progress against anyone else’s grief. Be your own timekeeper, and use your TIME wisely.

If at all possible change your focus a bit. Instead of dwelling on how much you lost – try thinking the good memories. We didn’t lose a loved one. HE/ SHE DIED. We didn’t lose the love that flowed between us; it still flows, but somewhat differently now. Grief is the price we pay for love. And as much as it hurts, I am sure you are glad to have known and loved this person which has died. Don’t let death cast ugly shadows, but rather warm memories of loving times you shared. Even though death comes, LOVE NEVER GOES AWAY! -Darcie D. Sims, Ph.D. Margaret Anne Yost nursed for 35 years, working mostly on medical floors. She has journeyed with many clients who were dying, and she tried to comfort their families during this difficult time. She has completed two units of Clinical Pastoral
DONATION PRESENTED – Ekos Holdings Ltd., which is owned by Greg and Shirley Soke, recently presented a cheque for $1,000 to Ross Fisher, Executive Director of The Health Foundation. “The most important thing in our lives is family and the health and well-being of our families,” says Greg Soke, pictured at left. “A new updated health facility in our community is assurance that we can have peace of mind that our families will have the best care provided for them if need be.” “Our community here in east central Saskatchewan is growing, and we are going to continue to grow, adds Fisher. “We need to plan for a new regional hospital to make sure the services we are going to need will be available to our families, friends and neighbours. We appreciate this support from Greg and Shirley Soke; strong support like this is absolutely vital to the long-term success of obtaining a new regional hospital.”

CONCEPTUAL PLAN – Calvin Tokarchuk, owner of Du-All Drywall (above right), presents Ross Fisher, Executive Director of The Health Foundation with $1,000. The money is going to the conceptual plan for the new hospital, and Tokarchuk says that while the health region has great staff, it’s clear that there’s a real need for a new hospital in the region.

Terriers win conference second place By ALEX MORGOTCH N-R Writer The Yorkton Terriers wrapped up their SJHL regular season with a pair of wins, one at home and the last game on the road. The Terriers clinched second place in the Sherwood Conference standings Wednesday night with a 4-1 win over the visiting LaRonge Ice Wolves in their last home game of the regular season at the Farrell Agencies arena. The win gave the Terriers home ice advantage over their opponents in the first round of the playoffs. Home ice advantage means the Terriers will play the first and, if necessary, seventh game of the upcoming series with their Highway 10 rivals, the Melville Millionaires, at home. Terrier captain Riley Paterson opened the scoring early in the first period with a powerplay goal assisted by Keven Cann and Brady Norrish. Ryon Sookro added Yorkton’s second goal late in the period assisted by Kailum Gervais and Jeremy Johnson. Jared Iron scored the lone goal of the second period which pulled the Wolves within one goal of the Terriers. Jeremy Johnson scored Yorkton’s third goal midway through the third period assisted by Brent Struble and Riley Paterson.
TERRIER LEFT WINGER Kailum Gervais takes a shot on LaRonge netminder Alex Rajotte during the final Terrier home game of the regular season Wednesday night. Tanner LeSann, a recent call-up from the Yorkton Harvest, capped the game scoring with his first SJHL goal assisted by Cann and Dakota Odgers, also a recent call-up from the Midget AAA Harvest. Saturday night a pair of
first period goals and another pair in the third period handed a 4-1 win to the visiting Yorkton Terriers over the home team, the Notre Dame Hounds, at the Duncan McNeill Arena. Johnson opened the scoring late in the opening frame

Boys advance to provincial playdowns The YRHS senior boys’ curling team won at regional playdowns in Foam Lake on the weekend and are now headed to provincial playdowns in Weyburn. The boys defeated Melfort Friday and P.A. St. Mary’s. Saturday the YRHS boys rallied in the fifth end to come back to win by three. The YRHS senior boys team includes skip Paul Toth, third Brennen Peleshytyk, second Darren Tillman, and lead Ryan Nagy. The team is coached by Lana Stanek-Sebas tian, Cindy Smith, and Gerald Shymko. The high school boys provincial curling championships will be held in Weyburn March 2 and 3. Eight teams from the province will play off in a triple knock out tournament for the provincial title
assisted by Paterson. Chase Norrish added Yorkton’s second goal with about a minute and a half remaining in the first period assisted by Johnson and Cann.
MAKING A NEW FRIEND – The Boys & Girls Club of Yorkton hosted a Winter Family Festival at the Knights of Columbus Park Monday afternoon. Stephanie Senger, program coordinator for the Boys & Girls Club, says the event offers a variety of winter activities for children of all ages along with parents and guardians. Participants were able to skate on both the large ice surface or on the smaller rink, play some shinny, or go tobogganing on the hill. The Boys & Girls Club offered coffee, hot chocolate and cookies for refreshments. “It’s a beautiful day today, so we got lucky,” Senger suggests. The event celebrates the Saskatchewan Stat holiday, Family Day and the club thought it was important to run some family activities Senger closes. Pictured above two young participants Kiana (l) and Jabe (r) each make a new friend.
The Yorkton Wildlife Federation will host its annual awards banquet and dance Saturday, March 3 at St. Mary’s Cultural Centre. In addition to the delicious banquet prepared and served by St. Mary’s staff, the event will include the annual awards for hunting, fishing and photography from the past year. Following the awards presentations, and program, the YWF dance will take place. Additional activities include various fund raising raffles and auctions. Some lucky guests will also claim various draw prizes as well as the door prize. The YWF has been a major contributor to the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) which is the largest conservation organization per capita in the world. Proceeds of the event will go toward the support of many SWF ongoing projects. Projects funded included the Habitat Trust, Conservation School, local fisheries programs, and the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). YWF president Heath Dreger says this year there will not be a keynote or guest speaker in order to reduce costs. Tickets for the banquet and awards night, available at Yorkton Home Hardware and Bird Dog Archery are $45 for the banquet and dance. To buy a corporate table for eight people at $225 contact Heath Dreger at 7837837. “That’s the least expensive banquet you can get in town these days,” Dreger points out. Corporate tables entitle the purchaser or purchasers to a reserved table for eight with complimentary wine, an advertisement and acknowledgement in the evening program and presentation, an acknowledgement in the spring newsletter and 25 Deer Bucks, $25 gift certificates to be used for the silent auction. For more information or to buy a corporate table call Heath Dreger at 783-7837.

Competitive gymnastics season opens By ALEX MORGOTCH N-R Writer Yorkton Springers Gymnastics Club athletes recently competed at the Gymnastic Adventure competition in Regina. Springers Provincial level 1,2 and 3 coach George Baranyai says his competitive girls have had their best performance ever at this competition. His 10 competitive Provincial levels 1,2 and 3 girls claimed 35 medals in Regina. “No club in the province has won that many medals in any competition,” Baranyai claims. This year the Yorkton Springers have modified their coaching structure. Baranyai is no longer head coach. The coaching has been divided among several people. Baranyai coaches 10 provincial level gymnasts. Coach Todd Appel works with five level 1 girls. There are about 15 GymCat Advanced girls coached by Jerry Lutz. The Yorkton Springers started their competitive program in the second week of August, training and preparing for competition through the fall. From January until June of this year the group will train and compete until the end of June, Baranyai reports. Lutz says the recent competition in Regina was good. There were 21 girls competing in each age group, he reports. The age groups included nine years and under as well as the 10 years and over. The GymCats are between the competitive and recreational levels. “They’re learning com-
petitive skills, but not three days a week,” Lutz explains. GymCat competition awards standards medals rather than individual medals based on points, Lutz notes. Instead their performances are ranked on points. The Yorkton Springers gymnasts claimed two gold, two silver and two gold medals, Lutz adds. Results of the Gymnastic Adventure competition at Regina were: P2 Tyro – Sierra Cook, gold (46.634). P2 Open – Cassidy Stackowich, gold (47.768); Hannah Herman, silver (45.818). Brittany Schofer, gold (48.335). The team travels with Skate Saskatchewan skater development director Dale Hazel who organizes the tour for the skaters. “It’s a most wonderful experience for them,” Nagy declares. She says the experience is the Saskatchewan version of Stars on Ice for the skaters. Saskatchewan junior bronze champion from Skate Yorkton Koen Kucher-Paulmark and Senior Bronze Skate Saskatchewan champion Raegan Exner will perform in Swift Current with the Bursary Show, Nagy reports. “Yorkton has a great showing in these shows,” Nagy closes. This will be Kailee Sawatzky’s third year with the Bursary Show. She admits she was a little nervous when she was first selected for the team because she wasn’t sure about what to expect. She found she enjoyed the experience and looks forward to doing it again. This year she’ll be joined by Nicki Nagy who will be part of the team for her first time. Sawatzky, who skates with Skate Yorkton and with the Skate Saskatchewan high performance team, is from Tisdale. She billets with a family and attends school in Melville in order to work with her coach Susan Nagy. Performing for her parents and her home town may be more exciting for her because she lives away from home. “She will actually get to see her family,” Nagy notes. Sawatzky says she doesn’t mind living away from her home because she loves skating and wants to take it as far as it will take her.

Greg Ferguson scored the lone goal of the second period for Notre Dame. Sookro notched Yorkton’s third goal early in the final frame assisted by Sam Rockwell and Curtis Oliver. Devon McMullen capped the game scoring midway through the period with the Terriers’ fourth goal assisted by Sookro. Yorkton Terrier head coach Trent Cassan says right from start to finish it’s been a long, but good regular season. He says he’s had a good group of players and a very good staff to work with. He’s liked the development he’s seen in the younger players, their sense of responsibility and the way they’ve responded to it. Cassan believes the opening period was a carryover from the previous game against the Ice Wolves. “We knew that if we’re moving our feet and skating well and are physical we could be effective,” he claims. Terrier captain Riley Paterson’s first goal certainly helped. Both Paterson and Struble stepped up and elevated their game, he suggests. “You play every game to win,” Cassan says of Saturday’s final regular season game against the Notre Dame Hounds. The Terriers currently have some injured players. “That’s when you run into problems and develop bad habits and guys get hurt when you go into games too laid back or too nonchalant,” he states. While he can’t predict how soon his injured players will be ready to get back into the game, Cassan is pleased with the performance of some of the younger guys who appear able to step into the playoffs right away if needed. He plans to have several young Terrier list players from the Harvest practice with the team to prepare them for possible playoff opportunities. Cassan predicts the upcoming playoff series with the Millionaires will be exciting and emotional. As a player in two such series previously, he remembers the excitement they generated Despite the emotion, Cassan urges fans to recognize these are young players who are working
their hardest and giving their best effort. Looking back at the season, each team has won in the other’s rink. As the series runs longer, home ice advantage may be a factor, says Cassan. But home ice advantage can change pretty quickly too, he points out. It doesn’t matter who is involved in the games, playoff series are always physical, he suggests. It’s expected that some players will get hurt, he closes.

Lashburn, Tisdale and Moosomin this month. Eleven year old Nicki Nagy and 14 year old Kailee Sawatzky have earned a place in the travelling show which is the main fundraiser for Skate Saskatchewan, says Susan Nagy, head coach of Skate Yorkton. All revenues from the performances go to fund the Skate Saskatchewan high performance and skater development program, Nagy explains. The athletes will be invited to schools where they will do presentations. They will also help to run a CanSkate session in each of the communities they visit, Nagy adds. Each community visited will put on a potluck supper inviting local people to participate as a fund raising event for the local community program. The high performance team includes about 18 athletes. Included in that number are the duo of Paige Lawrence and Rudi Schweigers, current Canadian pair bronze medalists. “We’re very lucky to be able to say that we have them in Saskatchewan,” Nagy notes. The pair are also on the senior international circuit, she adds. It’s also a great honor for the Skate Yorkton members to travelling with the elite Canadian team members, Nagy states. “It’s pretty much every kid’s dream, once they become a team member, to be invited to a part of the Bursary Show as a team member,” Nagy claims. The athletes travel as a team, they eat together. They’re billeted. Essentially, they become family, Nagy suggests.

Harvest season wraps up By ALEX MORGOTCH N-R Writer
The Yorkton Harvest wrapped up the current season with an overtime win over the Regina Pat Canadians and falling to the Prince Albert Mintos in their last two games of the regular season. Thursday night, despite being outshot 48-16 by Regina, the Harvest squeaked out a narrow 3-2 overtime win over the Pat Canadians at the Al Ritchie Arena. The Harvest jumped out to a two goal lead in the first period on goals by Lynnden Pastachak and Tanner LeSann. Pastachak scored just under two minutes after the opening whistle assisted by Nicholas Pouliot. LeSann added Yorkton’s second goal just about midway through the period assisted by Brayden Park and Blake McMillen. Emery Anderson lit up the board for the Pat Canadians late in the period. Tristan Frei tied the game at two with 2:24 remaining in the second period. Following a scoreless final frame the game went into overtime. LeSann potted the
game winner into an empty net unassisted with 46 seconds left on the clock to clinch the win for the Harvest. Saturday the P.A. Mintos outshot the Harvest 58-11 on the way to an 11-0 shutout win at the Art Hauser Centre Arena. The Mintos scored five times in each of the second and third periods, including five powerplay goals on the way to the win. Prince Albert goals were scored by Regan Wilson and Adam Osczevski who scored twice each, while Miles Warkentine, Matt Anholt, Ryan Duret, Lance Yaremchuk, Adam Fauchoux, Cody Young and Brett Njaa each added a goal. Sunday afternoon the Mintos continued their shooting spree peppering Harvest goalie Spencer Bomboir with 56 shots on goal. Bomboir stood his ground much better in the second game of the two game series allowing just four goals on 56 shots to earn a game star nod. Despite Bomboir’s stellar effort in goal, the Mintos claimed a 4-1 win. Warkentine scored twice for P.A., once in
Terrier Game Star YORKTON TERRIER team captain, Riley Paterson, was named game star for the final home game of the season against the visiting LaRonge Ice Wolves. The game, won 4-1 by the Terriers clinched second place in the Sherwood Conference standings and earned the Terriers home ice advantage over their Highway 10 rivals, the Melville Millionaires in the first round of the Sherwood Conference playoffs. Paterson, who scored the opening goal and earned an assist in the game which earned him the game star title, says the team is excited to get into the playoffs. He says the win in his last home game as a Terrier was special. “I’m just glad I could do what I can to help the team win and that’s all that matters,” he comments. Paterson suggests the first round will be a back and forth series as both teams have had some success during the regular season. However, he feels the Terriers will be ready for Melville. It should be a pretty good series, he predicts. He’s pleased the Terriers
managed to get home ice advantage with the win over the Ice Wolves. Now the team has to bring their A game to continue to win. Paterson says he and his teammates will need to play a physical game. “It’s always a battle when you’re playing Melville. It’s good back and forth hockey,” he says. He says he’ll enjoy a brief time off before the team gets back to work next week to prepare for the playoffs.
the first to open the scoring and once in the third period. Duret and Anholt each added a goal for the win. Dakota Odgers scored the lone Yorkton goal, a powerplay marker midway through the second period assisted by Park and McMillen. The Harvest finished the season in 11th place in the 12 team Sask. Midget AAA Hockey League, out of the playoff race, effectively ending their current season.

Letter of Appreciation When we were approached by Mr. Doug Rue of Freshwater Holdings in July 2011, it was an opportunity for us to sell our farmland at a very fair price. Mr. Rue visited our home and he explained the process, which went forward very quickly. We received payment on September 15, 2011. We appreciated Mr. Rue’s friendly and understanding manner. There were no difficulties and he kept in touch throughout the transaction.
