THE COACHES

CARMINE ISACCO

HIEU QUACH

HEAD COACH

ASSISTANT COACH Hieu Quach has been with the Lions men’s soccer program since 2007. He came to York along with head coach Carmine Isacco and previous to that worked as an assistant under Isacco for two years at the University of Toronto. He has played a big role in the success experienced by the Lions, including the team’s five OUA titles (2007, 2013-15, 2017) and four national championships (2008, 2010, 2014, 2015). Quach was a threeyear starter at central midfield for the Varsity Blues, earning conference all-star selection in 1996 and academic all-Canadian honours in 1998. He graduated from the University of Toronto with an education degree after earning a bachelor of science from Dalhousie University.

Carmine Isacco was named the head coach of the Lions men’s soccer team in 2007 and has led the Lions unprecedented success, winning four U SPORTS titles (2008, 2010, 2014, 2015) as well as five OUA banners (2007, 2013-15, 2017). He is also a six-time recipient of the OUA West coach of the year award (2007, 2010, 201214, 2016) and a two-time U SPORTS coach of the year (2007, 2014).

MATTHEW STINSON

Isacco joined the Lions after spending two seasons as the head coach with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, where he led the team to a pair of OUA silver medals and a CIS silver medal in 2005. His coaching career has also seen him claim a national championship with the Hearts-Azzurri S.C. in the under-18 division. As a player, Isacco took to the pitch at the University of Maryland, where he was named a freshman all-American and a three-time all-ACC first team member. In 1993 he participated in the World University Games.

ASSISTANT COACH Matt Stinson went from player to coach with the Lions after the 2015 season. He spent three years as a midfielder with the program, earning OUA West second-team all-star honours and CIS tournament all-star recognition in 2014 and helping the Lions win three OUA championships and two national titles. Stinson brings plenty of playing experience at a number of different levels to the coaching staff. Before coming to York, he spent parts of two seasons with Toronto FC, appearing in 17 games, and represented Canada on the senior men’s national team. He also spent one season at Winthrop University, where he was voted team MVP as a freshman and was a first-team all-conference award recipient.

After graduating with a bachelor of arts degree from Maryland, he turned professional and played four seasons with the Toronto Italia Soccer Club in the National Soccer League (NSL). In his first season with the club he was named goalkeeper of the year and he also received Canadian all-star status three times. He also played pro in the A-league, winning a league title in 1997 with Milwaukee and earning all-star honours and the playoff MVP award. Isacco was the goalkeeper coach for Toronto FC in their inaugural MLS season.

ANDREA LOMBARDO ASSISTANT COACH Andrea Lombardo joined the Lions coaching staff in 2017, returning to a program where he spent parts of two seasons as a player. He was also a long-time employee at York as a student recruitment officer in the admissions office. Lombardo enjoyed a successful playing career at a number of different levels prior to coming to York. He began his professional career in Italy and then joined Toronto FC for their inaugural MLS season in 2007 and spent two seasons there.

CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

YORK LIONS

LIONS IN KAMLOOPS TO PLAY FOR THIRD NATIONAL TITLE IN FOUR YEARS The York University Lions men’s soccer team is in the hunt for its third national title in four seasons this weekend as the U SPORTS championships kick off at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, B.C., on Thursday.

as Dylan Carreiro scored just before the end of the first half and Cicchillo added another in the second in a 2-0 win over Carleton. For the fourth year in a row, the Lions allowed the fewest goals in the OUA West, giving up just 11 in 16 regular-season games, and they also scored more goals than the rest of the teams with 50. Leading the way was OUA West most valuable player and first-team all-star Cristian Cavallini with 15 goals in 12 games.

The eight-team tournament runs until Sunday, with the gold-medal final set for 2pm PT (5pm ET) at Hillside Stadium. All 11 games will be webcast on usports.live.

Their opponent is a team that only joined Canada West four years ago. The WolfPack went a program-best 6-3-6 in the regular season and qualified for the playoffs for the first time, where they defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 5-1 en route to a Final Four appearance and a Canada West bronze medal.

The Lions are competing at the national tournament for the fifth straight year and are in search of their third title in that stretch and fifth overall since head coach Carmine Isacco took over the reins in 2007. After winning back-to-back banners in 2014 and 2015, they were knocked out in the quarter-finals last year by the eventual champion Alberta Golden Bears and finished in sixth place.

In addition to the Lions, two other participating teams have previously hoisted the Sam Davidson Memorial Trophy. UBC leads the way with 13 championships, including back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013, and UNB captured their lone banner in 1980.

After capturing their fifth OUA championship in the last 11 years this past weekend on home turf, the Lions enter the national tournament as the top seed from their conference and will begin the title hunt in the third quarter-final on Thursday at 5:30pm PT (8:30pm ET) against the host Thompson Rivers WolfPack.

The winner of Thursday’s quarter-final will advance to the championship semifinal on Friday night at 7:30pm PT (10:30pm ET) against either the AUS champion Cape Breton Capers or the RSEQ finalist UQAM Citadins, while the loser will fall to the consolation side of the draw and will play again on Friday at 1:30pm PT (4:30pm ET).

After an uncharacteristically slow start to the season in which they lost two of their first three games, the Lions went undefeated the rest of the way to finish atop the OUA West Division for the 11th straight year. They needed a pair of thrilling victories to qualify for the national championship, getting an 86th-minute goal from Joey Cicchillo to defeat Western 2-1 in the quarter-finals, and then a penalty kicks victory over Ryerson in the semifinals that was only possible because surprise hero Omar Marzouk scored the tying goal with just seconds left in injury time to extend the game. The OUA final was much more clinical

The other quarter-final match-ups will see the Canada West champion Thunderbirds face the AUS finalist Varsity Reds, and the RSEQ champion Montreal Carabins take on the Ravens
