HEAD Coach NATE PHILIPPE Head Coach

Nate Philippe was named the head coach of the Lions men’s basketball program in June 2017. Philippe, a Toronto native, returned home to coach the Lions and came to York with nearly 10 years of experience as a varsity coach, including two as a head coach in U SPORTS with the UQAM Citadins. He also has five years of experience in NCAA Division I basketball and spent one year as an assistant coach with the Lions in 2009-10. In his two seasons with the Citadins, Philippe engineered a tremendous program turnaround, taking a last-place team to the RSEQ championship game in his first season and leading them back to the title game the following year. Under his guidance from 2015-17, the Citadins won 29 more games than they had in the two years prior to his arrival, had their first conference player of the year recipient and U SPORTS all-Canadian in Kewyn Blain and won the gold medal at the first ever FISU World University 3x3 Championships in Xiamen, China, in 2015.

Philippe went to UQAM after two seasons as an assistant coach at American University (2013-15), helping the Eagles win an improbable Patriot League tournament championship in 2014 that secured them a berth in the NCAA tournament, and a return to the championship game in 2015. Prior to that he was an assistant with the University of Maine for two seasons and the University of North Dakota for one, winning the Great West Conference championship with the Fighting Hawks in 2011. Philippe’s coaching career began in Toronto in 2008, when he served as the head coach of the senior boys’ team at West Hill Collegiate Institute and Grassroots Canada Elite AAU, as well as an assistant coach at Centennial College. He was then the associate head coach at the Regional Elite Development Academy (REDA) in its founding year. As a player he spent four seasons in the AUS with UPEI and Saint Mary’s, leading the Huskies to a pair of appearances in the conference championship game and the CIS national tournament. He graduated from Saint Mary’s in 2003 with a bachelor of arts degree in economics and business studies and went on to a fiveyear career as a real estate agent before beginning coaching.

PLAYER PROFILE Which became a reality, when his talent and skill were recognized by Concord University in West Virginia, United States. when he was offered a scholarship. Chevannes spent three years playing in the U.S., including a season with the Concord Mountain Lions in NCAA Division II. This exposure was a major milestone for him, and it exemplifies his passion and hard work towards the sport. Unfortunately, his last season did not go as planned, as his 2018-19 season was cut short due to an injury. However, Chevannes managed to put up respectable numbers on the scoresheet, averaging 7.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game. By ARPAN KAUR A dynamic fifth-year guard, Brendon Chevannes has an unmistakable enthusiasm about him when discussing basketball. He began his sporting career as a child in Ottawa, where he spent his younger years playing ice hockey before discovering his passion for basketball. The interdisciplinary social science major was introduced to the game upon his arrival in Toronto through his brothers and cousins during his time in elementary school in grade one. “I come from a big family, three other brothers and cousins who started playing basketball, so I decided to follow in their footsteps.” Ever since Chevannes became enamoured with the game, just like any other basketball player, he has this dream to one day be drafted by the NBA. To achieve that, he intends on trying out for the Canadian Elite Basketball League once he finishes school, and with the goal of eventually playing overseas in the long run. Being a student-athlete comes with several responsibilities and challenges, however, Chevannes manages to balance the two with ease.

As an athlete who’s had to try multiple times before excelling and having learned to trust the process, Chevannes strives to instil a competitive spirit on the court and while he coaches young individuals. “Well iron sharpens iron, the ability to compete allows you to perform at your best against the guys that are giving their best, and it just forces you to get it in your bag -pull out moves. But at the end of the day, we make each other better, which is the best part of competing for me.” GETTING TO KNOW BRENDON If you could play another sport, what would it be? Football. Do you have any pre-game meals or rituals? I like to meditate before games, so I usually devote an hour in the morning before my game. Favourite professional athlete? Kobe Bryant. Who is your biggest supporter? I have to give that to my whole family, they’ve been with me through thick and thin, kept me level-headed, healthy and just always looking out.

“Dedication is key,” he says when asked how he manages his varsity student-athlete life. “Having a schedule in place is what keeps me on track, and it’s been working for me; getting good grades and performing well academically.” He strongly believes that if you put in the work, everything takes care of itself.
