Season outlook As the York University Lions men’s hockey team embarks on their season, head coach Russ Herrington says the team is in the midst of finding its identity. “We think we have a style of play in place that will help us exploit our strengths. As vague as it sounds, we just want to be 1-0 every time we come to the rink.” That’s already happened a couple times this year in nonconference play. They went 4-1 in the 2021 preseason and are hoping to continue that momentum through the regular season. While the style of play may help get the Lions to their goal of an OUA playoff berth, team culture plays an integral role as well. Herrington says there is a particular group of Lions who will not be in a uniform this year but shaped the current second-year class into prideful representatives of the York logo.
When discussing those key returning players, Herrington fittingly begins by discussing the team’s netminders. Cole Ceci got some good experience down the stretch in his first season, and Dalton Ewing has made massive strides, earning wins during the fall’s non-conference schedule. On defence, Justin Bean returns to round out his eligibility after getting into teacher’s college. He will captain the team and serve as the on-ice leader for the team’s blue line. Up front, Nik Malenica comes to Herrington’s mind as a potential point producer. He struck on the power play during the preseason versus Ontario Tech and is slated for increased production as a more prominent part of the offence. Brendan Browne has also produced in the preseason. He had a breakout rookie campaign in 2019-20, posting 16 points in 26 games, a team high for first years.
“”
WE THINK WE HAVE A STYLE OF PLAY IN PLACE THAT WILL HELP US EXPLOIT OUR STRENGTHS. AS VAGUE AS IT SOUNDS, WE JUST WANT TO BE 1-0 EVERY TIME WE COME TO THE RINK. Russ Herrington, head coach
That group includes Sal Filice, Alex Mowbray and Morgan Messenger – three members of the team’s leadership group who graduated earlier in 2021. “Their role was to teach a group of 17 first-year players what it means to be a Lion, and they did an awesome job of that. I’m so pleased with how they prepared the core group of players who are now taking on some upper-class responsibilities.” While his team is in a difficult division, Herrington believes the key returning players will have an extra motivation behind them – they will want to make the team’s graduating players proud of their record. The coming season will feature a multitude of third- and fourthyear players and, by Herrington’s account, when you have a heavy cohort of those players, expectations get higher.

YORK LIONS
Herrington believes the team’s recruiting class can contribute immediately upon arrival. When asked which of the recruits will make the most impact, Herrington again began by talking about his netminders, singling out Brendan Bonello as one of the best Jr. A goaltenders in the country during his last season in play with the OJHL’s Pickering Panthers. He expects Bonello to push Ceci and Ewing to be better between the pipes. Beyond goaltending, Lucas Breault will put on a Lions uniform for the first time after spending two seasons with the NCAA Division I’s Union College. The two recruiting classes have contributed greatly during the preseason, and the men’s hockey team hops the contributions will continue as they head into the 2021-22 season.

She brings to York plenty of experience with a number of different leagues, most notably in the New Jersey Devils front office as their lead analyst of player information and video last season. Doerrie has a bachelor of commerce degree in sports administration from Laurentian University. She began her career as a video coach with the Sudbury Wolves, which led to opportunities to work with the Toronto Maple Leafs development camp and as a video coach with Hockey Canada at their women’s summer development camp in 2017, before overseeing analytics with the Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team for the 2017-18 season. She has also consulted with the Ottawa Senators and the Canadian Women’s Hockey League, has been a contributor to The Athletic, The Hockey News, Sports Illustrated, EP Rinkside, and co-hosts her own podcast, The Staff & Graph Podcast, with Mike Stephens.
player profile With all his experience, Bean is one regular season game away from 100 in a Lions uniform. If you add his playoff experience to that total, he’s well into the triple digits. When asked what advice he has for younger players entering the league, he praised the skill of the competition and the OUA’s parity. “It’s better than people give it credit for. There are a lot of talented, skilled players in the league and on our team. Because of that, the hardest working team is going to win nine times out of 10.” For this coming season, Bean says there is a vibe around this team that is unique. It’s not Justin Bean’s first rodeo as a captain. The newly-minted captain of the York University Lions men’s hockey team has benefited from two crucial things: His leadership experience in previous career stops, and his mentors with the Lions as a younger player.
“We did a lot in the offseason to bring the group together. A lot of team-building exercises and Zoom meetings. We are a tight-knit group, even tighter than in years past which is saying something. And we have a lot of young talent here and returning guys who are stepping into their third season – it’s our biggest class by a mile.”
He knows the role of the captain.
GETTING TO KNOW JUSTIN
“Making sure there’s lines of communication between the coaching staff and the players, while also being there for the guys. Relaying messages between the two parties is important. I also try to bring a good work ethic every day to lead by example.” Bean was second among York’s defence corps in scoring last time the team took the ice in 2019-20 with 13 points in 26 games. He has served as a contributing player in all of his previous career stops, most notably with the OJHL’s Wellington Dukes where he donned the ‘C’ previously. In his final year with Wellington before committing to York, Bean had 16 goals from the blue line and 39 points over 54 games. He also added three assists over 12 playoff games, which helped him gain experience leading to five assists over nine OUA playoff games in 2017-18, his rookie season on defence for York.
Favourite movie? Step Brothers. Pre-game meal? Chicken thighs, rice and broccoli. If you weren’t playing hockey, what would you be playing? Golf. But not very well. What’s your favourite sports memory? Getting drafted into the OHL by Belleville after not getting drafted the previous season.
During that period of adjustment to U SPORTS hockey, Bean says he leaned on a group of mentors who he remains friends with today. “Shayne Rover was captain in my first year and he played a huge part in getting me acclimated to the U SPORTS level. So did Derek Sheppard, who remains a close friend of mine today. He really took me under his wing. Reid Jackman was my roommate, and he did too.” 2021-22 MEN’S hockey
