YORK LIONS

SEASON OUTLOOK It’s a new era for the York Lions men’s basketball team with the hiring of head coach Nate Philippe this past summer, and he will lead a nearly-brand new squad into the 2017-18 campaign that is full of high expectations. Philippe comes to York with a proven track record of turning around programs, most recently taking a last-place UQAM team and leading them to back-to-back RSEQ championship games, and his task now is to do the same with the Lions. “One of the things I’ve learned in the programs I’ve worked with is that you can’t limit expectations. To put any number of wins down, or to say we will make a certain round, those are all limitations. Who knows how good we can be? We don’t even know yet. It’s about the process of development and getting better every day. We are going to maximize the potential of this group and see where it can take us.” He will have plenty of talent at his fingertips to put on the floor. There was plenty of turnover on the roster in the offseason and only six players who saw court time last year return, but the line-up is full of veteran experience and the Lions are poised to make an immediate splash in the OUA. The team’s second-leading scorer and leading rebounder last year, forward Brandon Ramirez, is back and looking to continue the success he experienced as a sophomore. His scoring average was nearly triple the number he put up as a rookie and he also doubled his rebounding totals, finishing 21st in OUA scoring and 18th in rebounding. Third-year guard Gianmarco Luciani will finally make his much-anticipated debut with the Lions. A former AUS allrookie team member while playing for the Acadia Axemen, he sat out the 2015-16 season after transferring to York and then missed all of last year with an injury. After missing two full seasons, he is healthy and chomping at the bit to get back on the floor, and his shooting prowess will be a welcome addition to the Lions. Philippe didn’t have much time to recruit once being hired at York in June, but he still assembled a tremendous group that is led by a quartet of players who return home to the GTA after time spent playing in the United States in guards Josiah Riley, Chevon Brown and DeShawn Montaque, as well as forward Ricky Hudson. “They are immediate impact guys. They know what it takes to compete at this level and they’ve all had success in Canada at the United States. They are talented but also high character guys. They are extremely hard workers,

disciplined and tough, and they are a big part of how we are changing the culture here. We will be leaning on them for leadership and production and we are still only scratching the surface of how good they can be.” Riley spent two seasons at New Mexico Junior College and started 24 games in his sophomore year. He is a versatile player who will be counted on for his scoring and lockdown defensive abilities. Brown and Hudson are already familiar with each other as teammates at ASA College in Brooklyn, N.Y. Brown will serve as a team captain thanks to his exceptional leadership abilities, while Hudson’s intensity every time he steps on the court will benefit the team significantly. Montaque, meanwhile, is a high-level playmaker who comes to York from Western Nebraska Community College. Another new face in the line-up is true freshman Prince Kamunga, who is extremely athletic and has tremendous potential. He is still learning to harness his natural abilities and will be a key piece this year and moving forward. After two years outside the playoff picture, Philippe is eyeing one of the six spots in the new OUA East, which is one of two divisions in the conference following three years in a four-division format. He knows better than anyone what it takes to turn a program around quickly and he is the best person to turn the same trick with the Lions.

It’s about the process of development and getting better every day. We are going to maximize the potential of this group and see where it can take us. NATE PHILIPPE, HEAD COACH

HEAD COACH NATE PHILIPPE HEAD COACH @CoachPhilippe

Nate Philippe was named the head coach of the Lions men’s basketball program in June 2017. Philippe, a Toronto native, returns home to coach the Lions and comes to York with nearly 10 years of experience as a varsity coach, including two as a head coach in U SPORTS with the UQAM Citadins. He also has five years of experience in NCAA Division I basketball and spent one year as an assistant coach with the Lions in 2009-10.

Philippe’s coaching career began in Toronto in 2008, when he served as the head coach of the senior boys’ team at West Hill Collegiate Institute and Grassroots Canada Elite AAU, as well as an assistant coach at Centennial College. He was then the associate head coach at the Regional Elite Development Academy (REDA) in its founding year. As a player he spent four seasons in the AUS with UPEI and Saint Mary’s, leading the Huskies to a pair of appearances in the conference championship game and the CIS national tournament. He graduated from Saint Mary’s in 2003 with a bachelor of arts degree in economics and business studies and went on to a five-year career as a real estate agent before beginning coaching.

In his two seasons with the Citadins, Philippe engineered a tremendous program turnaround, taking a last-place team to the RSEQ championship game in his first season and leading them back to the title game the following year. Under his guidance from 2015-17, the Citadins won 29 more games than they had in the two years prior to his arrival, had their first conference player of the year recipient and U SPORTS all-Canadian in Kewyn Blain and won the gold medal at the first ever FISU World University 3x3 Championships in Xiamen, China, in 2015. Philippe went to UQAM after two seasons as an assistant coach at American University (2013-15), helping the Eagles win an improbable Patriot League tournament championship in 2014 that secured them a berth in the NCAA tournament, and a return to the championship game in 2015. Prior to that he was an assistant with the University of Maine for two seasons and the University of North Dakota for one, winning the Great West Conference championship with the Fighting Hawks in 2011.

York has a men’s basketball program with immense potential and one that has a great fit for my coaching philosophy and vision. The university has grown leaps and bounds since I was an assistant here and the transformation is incredible. I’m happy to be back in the GTA, one of the hotbeds of basketball talent and culture in Canada, and I feel this is a place where I can be successful. I am looking to put down roots for a long time and build a legacy here and I am really excited to establish a program that can compete nationally. NATE PHILIPPE, HEAD COACH 4

YORK LIONS

PLAYER PROFILE JOSIAH RILEY When Josiah Riley steps onto the court for his York Lions regular-season debut, he will do so with a heavy heart after the passing of his mother Karla just weeks before the OUA schedule tipped off. The third-year versatile athlete, who can play both guard and forward, committed to the Lions this summer soon after head coach Nate Philippe was hired. His main motivation for coming to York was to get an education closer to home after he spent two years attending junior college in New Mexico. For Riley, the tragedy surrounding his mother represents the second time in two years he has had to deal with a parent passing away after the death of his father Walter last year. “I learned that I can’t do everything by myself,” he says about being so far away from home. “Family is the most important thing to me. When my dad passed away last year, that was really tough on me because I wasn’t able to be there for my family. I made the choice to be closer to home this summer and I’m so glad I did after what happened with my mother.” Despite being new to York, Riley was immediately surrounded by a tremendous Lions family that is known for its support of each other. Philippe, also new to the institution but well aware of what makes being here special, decided that the team would dedicate his inaugural season to Karla, something that was completely unexpected for Riley. “When Coach told me, I was in shock. It’s not something a lot of teams do, dedicating a whole season to someone a lot of the guys didn’t even meet. It’s very special to me.”

fundamentals from the beginning. Growing up, he says he and his brother would turn anything they could into a hoop to practice, and that passion and dedication quickly paid off as he blossomed in the sport. In addition to his father, Riley has always had a close relationship with his brother, Kenan Jorsling. Jorsling was his former high school coach and is now a member of the Lions coaching staff and has been instrumental in guiding him on and off the court. It was early in high school that Riley first realized he had potential to go far in the game, and that year he was selected for the Ontario U15 team that went on to win the national championship. From there, his basketball journey took him to the Athlete Institute in Orangeville, Ont., and then a full scholarship at New Mexico, where he started 24 games as a sophomore and averaged 6.4 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. Now at York, Riley has big goals on the basketball court and will serve as co-captain for a new-look Lions’ squad that has the ability to surprise many this year. But more importantly, he is focused on his education and learning as much as he can so he can one day accomplish all of his career goals. “I want to be a teacher but not in the traditional sense. I want to help mentor kids who grew up in certain environments or without certain things or in the same situations as me, losing both parents. I want to coach them through life to help them be better people and I want to do it through sports so they can have that as an outlet like I did. “Basketball has allowed me to do so many things, most notably get an education, and that is something I am always going to be grateful for.” Riley has much to give, and with the memory of his parents inspiring him there is little doubt he will be a tremendous role model for future generations.

Riley will be playing in honour of both of his parents and credits his father with introducing him to the sport and teaching him the

YORK LIONS

JOIN THE PRIDE York University’s student-athletes have been competing against rival institutions on the Canadian sports scene for over 40 years. Provincial and national team titles, combined with numerous athletes and coaches who have participated on many of Canada’s national teams, attest to the success of York’s varsity program. Since the inception of organized sports competition in 1965, York has won 173 provincial banners and 36 national titles. Athletics & Recreation offers 19 varsity sport teams that compete in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). The varsity sport teams are guided by a tremendous coaching staff that is composed of NCCP certified professionals, many of whom also hold leadership positions in provincial and national sport organizations. The staff includes more than 100 dedicated full-time and part-time coaches.

ACADEMIC AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT At York, we understand that academic and financial support are significant keys to success at the university level and we have a number of programs in place to provide all the support necessary for student-athletes to thrive.

PROVIDING ATHLETES WITH WINNING STRATEGIES (PAWS) Athletics & Recreation has placed the highest priority on supporting its student-athletes in all facets of university life, focusing specifically on helping foster success in the classroom. The PAWS Program provides tutoring across multiple subjects for all students, mentoring from senior student-athletes, academic advising through our academic services coordinator and many of our faculty, and access to our vast network of alumni.

ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS York University is committed to helping students with demonstrated financial need meet the direct education costs associated with university studies (tuition, books and mandatory course fees). Financial assistance can be provided from a variety of sources including OSAP, scholarships, bursaries, private awards and employment. Athletics & Recreation understands the importance of providing Athletic Financial Awards (AFAs) to entering student-athletes and has developed a number of awards, valued at $22,500 each ($4,500 per year up to five years). These awards are given annually to elite student-athletes that have achieved an 80% entering average and maintain a 6.0 grade point average.

Programs are created for both in-season and off-season workouts. Every training session is designed for the needs of the athlete and individual sport. The training phase and focus changes throughout the year and are based on the competition schedule and off-season periodization program. The strength and conditioning coaches also work closely with the athletic therapy group on rehabilitating injured players. All Lions have access to the varsity strength and conditioning centre, which is for the exclusive use of our student-athletes. Training here allows you to work in a high-performance environment where all equipment and programming is selected with the needs of the high-performance athlete in mind.

SPORT INJURY CLINIC The Gorman/Shore Sport Injury Clinic features a full staff of athletic therapists and team doctors with significant experience in the medical field, and many of the doctors are recognized as some of the top experts in the country in their specific fields. In addition to sport medicine physicians, York employs a large variety of specialists including an orthopedic surgeon, dentist, neurosurgeon, radiologist, cardiologist, physiotherapist, chiropractor, massage therapist, osteopath, pedorthist and a mental health specialist. The team brings to York experience at multiple Olympic Games and world championships, as well as with professional and amateur athletes in a variety of sports. The sport injury clinic is a teaching clinic, with students from York University’s Athletic Therapy Certificate Program completing their clinical placements under the direct supervision of the clinic manager and supervisor. Because of this, most medical care for student-athletes is free of charge. Each varsity team is assigned at least one student athletic therapist who spends the entire season with the team and attends all practices and games. Lions student-athletes also have access to a fully-equipped clinic for all of their treatment needs.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING York University is one of only a handful of institutions in Canada that has two dedicated strength and conditioning coaches for its student-athletes. The Lions work closely with strength and conditioning staff, who create programs based on the needs of the athlete and coaches on high-performance lifts and movements. Team and individual workouts are available and education on all aspects of strength and conditioning is provided, including proper warm-ups and cool-downs, plyometrics, power, energy systems development, strength and flexibility.
