YORK LIONS
SEASON
OUTLOOK
The York Lions men’s basketball team enters the 2018-19 season with a re-vamped roster full of new faces and returning players committed to instilling a winning culture back to the program.
team-leading 2.2 assists per game last year, while Kamunga showed flashes of brilliance in his rookie season and has played well in the Lions pre-season games.
Nate Philippe begins his second season as head coach for the Lions with a fresh set of expectations after the team struggled in his first year behind the bench. The Lions got off to a good start last season going 8-5 in their non-conference schedule and 2-1 in the first three games of the regular season but fell into a long losing skid soon after, that would last the rest of the regular season. With a tough first year now in the rearview mirror, Philippe sees a productive first off-season as head coach as the first step in bringing back a winning culture to the team.
Philippe has spent a lot of time in the pre-season working on improving the team’s defence and rebounding and sees those areas, as well as quickly integrating the new players into the team’s systems as the keys to success this year.
“I think we’ve had a really good off-season and we’ve been taking steps forward every day,” says Philippe on his expectations for the team this
“Defence and rebounding are the two key focal points for me as a coach and our program,” says Philippe. “Those are the areas we want to take major steps forward this year and if we can accomplish that it will be a key part of our success. Also, with so many new players we have to accelerate our growth quickly as well. We have a lot of first year guys who will be playing important roles so we’re hoping they can adapt quickly to the style and physicality of the university game.”

year. “Realistically we definitely want to improve on last season, which was a tough year for us on and off the court that we don’t like to talk about too much. Our main goal this year is to continue to improve and compete for a playoff spot. Playing in the OUA East is a challenge with it being the toughest division in Canada but I’m excited to see how we match up and how good our team can be this season.” Leading the way for the Lions returning players this season will be 2017-18 team MVP Gianmarco Luciani and former OUA all-rookie team member Gene Spagnuolo, who will be playing their final years in the York red and white. After sitting out two seasons, first in 2015-16 as a red shirt after transferring from the Acadia Axemen and then in 2016-17 with an injury, Luciani was one of the bright spots for the team last year averaging a team-leading 10.7 points per game and finishing second on the team with 4.7 rebounds per game. Spagnuolo also returned last season after missing the 2016-17 season and averaged 7.5 points per game while finishing second on the team in assists.
Some of those new players who will step into important roles include point guard DeAndrae Pierre, who was Philippe’s number one recruiting target and was ranked #64 in the North Pole Hoops 2018 recruiting class rankings. Brendon Chevannes, an explosive point guard with elite ball handling skills, also transfers to York this season after spending three seasons playing in junior college and NCAA Division II in the United States. The two point guards are also joined by high-ceiling players such as shooting guard Alex Thielen and big man Somto Dimanochie, who Philippe expects to play important minutes in their rookie seasons. The Lions are at the start of an uphill climb to become an elite team in the OUA and with the right pieces now in place this season they will take the first few steps in that journey.
The two seniors will be joined by a pair of second-year Lions in Chevon Brown, who impressed in his first year with the team, and sophomore Prince Kamunga as players who Philippe expects to lead the team on the court this year. Brown, a junior college transfer and one of the team captains, averaged 9.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and a

HEAD
COACH
NATE PHILIPPE HEAD COACH
Nate Philippe was named the head coach of the Lions men’s basketball program in June 2017. Philippe, a Toronto native, returned home to coach his first year for the Lions last season with nearly 10 years of experience as a varsity coach, including two as a head coach in U SPORTS with the UQAM Citadins. He also has five years of experience in NCAA Division I basketball and spent one year as an assistant coach with the Lions in 2009-10. In his two seasons with the Citadins, Philippe engineered a tremendous program turnaround, taking a last-place team to the RSEQ championship game in his first season and leading them back to the title game the following year. Under his guidance from 2015-17, the Citadins won 29 more games than they had in the two years prior to his arrival, had their first conference player of the year recipient and U SPORTS all-Canadian in Kewyn Blain and won the gold medal at the first ever FISU World University 3x3 Championships in Xiamen, China, in 2015. Philippe went to UQAM after two seasons as an assistant coach at American University (2013-15), helping the Eagles win an improbable Patriot League tournament championship in 2014 that secured them a berth in the NCAA tournament, and a return to the championship game in 2015. Prior to that he was an assistant with the University of Maine for two seasons and the University of North Dakota for one, winning the Great West Conference championship with the Fighting Hawks in 2011.

Philippe’s coaching career began in Toronto in 2008, when he served as the head coach of the senior boys’ team at West Hill Collegiate Institute and Grassroots Canada Elite AAU, as well as an assistant coach at Centennial College. He was then the associate head coach at the Regional Elite Development Academy (REDA) in its founding year. As a player he spent four seasons in the AUS with UPEI and Saint Mary’s, leading the Huskies to a pair of appearances in the conference championship game and the CIS national tournament. He graduated from Saint Mary’s in 2003 with a bachelor of arts degree in economics and business studies and went on to a five-year career as a real estate agent before beginning coaching.

profile
GIANMARCO LUCIANI & GENE SPAGNUOLO It’s been a winding road to reach their final year in York red and white for two of the leaders on the men’s basketball team in forward Gianmarco Luciani and guard Gene Spagnuolo. Lions head coach Nate Philippe will be counting on the two seniors for leadership on and off the court this season, and while the two players have taken different paths to reach their final year, they have both shared common experiences that have led them to become important pieces in the Lions lineup. Prior to coming to York, Luciani spent two seasons playing for the Acadia Axemen in the Atlantic University Sport conference. He earned AUS all-rookie team honours in 2014 and appeared in 39 games over two seasons while averaging 6.4 points per game. He transferred to York in advance of the 2015-16 season and red shirted during his first year with the program. He was set to make his Lions debut on opening night of the 2016-17 season but suffered a knee injury on the last day of training camp that sidelined him for the entire season. He finally made his long-awaited Lions debut last year and thinks the setbacks he’s gone through in his career has ultimately made him stronger. “Those two years were definitely some of the harder years I’ve had in my life,” says the 6’5” forward. “Especially the second season when I had my knee injury. I had a really good offseason and was ready to comeback and have a really good year for York and on the last day of training camp I came down with the injury. But that injury just proved that I can do anything I put my mind too. I used it as a challenge to test myself and see how good I could comeback. And when I finally stepped on the court last year it was a great feeling of relief that all the hard work I put in to come back was worth it and I think I’m starting to reap the rewards now heading into this year.” For Spagnuolo, being a member of the Lions runs in his family. His father Enzo is a York hall of famer and one of the most-decorated players in the history of the program. Last season, his brother Stefano joined him on the team and the two were in the starting lineup for their first game together in the first game after the holiday break against the Laurentian Voyageurs.
registering a career-high 10.4 points per game in 2015-16. He returned last year to play in all 23 of the team’s games and filled a key leadership void that was missing from the young Lions team. He hopes to share the lessons he’s learned along the ups and downs of his university career with some of his younger teammates this year. “My advice for the younger guys would be to find extra time for yourself to put in work,” says Spagnuolo. “Not just to work on basketball, but on your academics and in your personal life. Try not to get stressed out and keep everything in balance. Another big thing on the court is you just have outwork the guys that are in front of you. Try and be better than the next guy in front of you and your opportunities will come.”
Spagnuolo began his Lions career in 2014-15 and like Luciani, was an all-rookie team member in his first season earning the OUA’s honour after averaging 8.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. The 6’3” guard also missed a full season, sitting out the 2016-17 season after
Both natives of Maple, Ont., Luciani and Spagnuolo played well in their returns to university basketball last season, as Spagnuolo started 15 games and led the team with a 42.9 three point percentage, while Luciani averaged 10.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game and was named team MVP. The senior duo will be counted on heavily again this season and hope to lead the rebuilding Lions to a playoff berth in their final years with the team.

JOIN THE PRIDE York University’s student-athletes have been competing against rival institutions on the Canadian sport scene for over 40 years. Provincial and national team titles, combined with numerous athletes and coaches who have participated on many of Canada’s national teams, attest to the success of York’s varsity program. Since the inception of organized sport competition in 1965, York has won 173 provincial banners and 36 national titles. Athletics & Recreation offers 19 varsity sport teams that compete in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and U SPORTS. The varsity sport teams are guided by a tremendous coaching staff that is composed of NCCP certified professionals, many of whom also hold leadership positions in provincial and national sport organizations and are experts in their field of coaching. The staff includes more than 100 dedicated fulltime and part-time coaches.
ACADEMIC & FINANCIAL SUPPORT At York we understand that academic and financial support are significant keys to success at the university level and we have a number of programs in place to provide all the support necessary for student-athletes to thrive. Providing Athletes with Winning Strategies (PAWS)
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING York University is one of only a handful of institutions in Canada that has two dedicated strength and conditioning coaches for its studentathletes. The Lions work closely with strength and conditioning staff, who create programs based on the needs of the athlete and coaches on high-performance lifts and movements. Team and individual workouts are available and education on all aspects of strength and conditioning is provided, including proper warm-ups and cool-downs, plyometrics, power, energy systems development, strength and flexibility. Programs are created for both in-season and off-season workouts. Every training session is designed for the needs of the athlete and individual sport. The training phase and focus changes throughout the year and are based on the competition schedule and off-season periodization program. The strength and conditioning coaches also work closely with the athletic therapy group on rehabilitating injured players. All Lions have access to the varsity strength and conditioning centre, which is for the exclusive use of our student-athletes. Training here allows you to work in a high-performance environment where all equipment and programming is selected with the needs of the high-performance athlete in mind.
SPORT INJURY CLINIC
Athletics & Recreation has placed the highest priority on supporting its student-athletes in all facets of university life, focusing specifically on helping foster success in the classroom. The PAWS Program provides tutoring across multiple subjects for all students, mentoring from senior student-athletes, academic advising through our academic services coordinator and many of our faculty, and access to our vast network of alumni.
The Gorman/Shore Sport Injury Clinic features a full staff of athletic therapists and team doctors with significant experience in the medical field, and many of the doctors are recognized as some of the top experts in the country in their specific fields.
Athletic Scholarships York University is committed to helping students with demonstrated financial need meet the direct education costs associated with university studies (tuition, books and mandatory course fees). Financial assistance can be provided from a variety of sources including OSAP, scholarships, bursaries, private awards and employment. Athletics & Recreation understands the importance of providing Athletic Financial Awards (AFAs) to entering student-athletes and has developed a number of awards, valued at $22,500 each ($4,500 per year up to five years). These awards are given annually to elite student-athletes that have achieved an 80% entering average and maintain a 6.0 grade point average.
In addition to sport medicine physicians, York employs a large variety of specialists including an orthopedic surgeon, dentist, neurosurgeon, radiologist, cardiologist, physiotherapist, chiropractor, massage therapist, osteopath, pedorthist and a mental health specialist. The team brings to York experience at multiple Olympic Games and world championships, as well as with professional and amateur athletes in a variety of sports. The sport injury clinic is a teaching clinic, with students from the Athletic Therapy Certificate Program doing their clinical placements under the direct supervision of the clinic manager and supervisor. Because of this, most medical care for student-athletes is free of charge. Each Lions varsity team is assigned at least one student athletic therapist who spends the entire season with the team and attends all practices and games. Lions student-athletes also have access to a fully-equipped clinic for all of their treatment needs.
