THE COACHES

CHRIS DENNIS

RUSS HERRINGTON

HEAD COACH

ASSISTANT COACH Russ Herrington joined the Lions coaching staff in 2015, bringing more than 20 years of coaching experience.

Chris Dennis was hired as the head coach of the Lions men’s hockey team in 2015. He is the 15th head coach in program history and a York alumnus, having graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in kinesiology and health science in 2002.

Herrington spent 12 seasons as a junior A head coach in Thornhill, Markham and Streetsville. He won more than 300 games in that span, was a two-time all-star coach and the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) coach of the year in 2003. He guided the Markham Waxers to the 2003 OJHL South Division championship, the team’s first division title in 20 years, and reached the 2006 RBC Cup with the Streetsville Derbys. He was also an AAA head coach for eight years with the York Simcoe Express and the South Central Coyotes, and throughout his coaching career has seen more than 100 players graduate to the OHL, CIS, NCAA and professional ranks.

In his first season he led the Lions to a first-place finish in the OUA West Division, engineering a worst-to-first turnaround after the team finished in last place in 2014-15. He was also named OUA coach of the year, York’s first since 1995, and three of his players were named OUA all-stars. In the summer of 2016, he was named an assistant coach with Hockey Canada’s U17 national team program.

As a player, Herrington spent four seasons with the Mustangs (1990-93) and went on to a free agent tryout with the Toronto Maple Leafs and one season with the South Carolina Stingrays in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). He and his wife, Janice, have a son Griffin and a daughter Regan, who is a varsity athlete with the women’s volleyball team at Acadia University.

He came to York from the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, where he served a number of different roles over 10 years with the club. Most recently he was an assistant coach for two seasons, and he has also previously been the team’s video analyst while working on coaching staffs under notable National Hockey League (NHL) head coaches Pat Quinn, Paul Maurice, Ron Wilson and Randy Carlyle.

ANDREAS KARLSSON ASSISTANT COACH Andreas Karlsson joined the Lions coaching staff in 2015 after spending three years coaching in Sweden.

While with the Leafs Dennis was also an assistant coach with the Toronto Marlies for their playoff run to the 2012 Calder Cup finals, and in 2014 he was the development camp manager for the annual prospects camp. In addition, he provided administrative assistance to general managers John Ferguson Jr., Cliff Fletcher, Brian Burke and Dave Nonis.

Karlsson spent 19 seasons as a professional hockey player, including five in the NHL with the Atlanta Thrashers and Tampa Bay Lightning. A Swedish centre drafted in the sixth round (148th overall) by the Calgary Flames in 1993, he amassed 72 points in 264 games. He also spent significant time in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Chicago Wolves, winning the Calder Cup as league champions in 2002.

Prior to joining the Leafs, Dennis was a physical education teacher at Robert F. Hall Catholic Secondary School, where he coached the senior boys’ hockey team to the ROPSSAA championship and an OFSAA bronze medal in 2005.

In his native Sweden, he played 12 seasons in the Swedish Elite League before and after his time in North America, most recently with Frolunda from 2008-11. He was also on the Swedish team that won the gold medal at the world championships in 2006.

Dennis and his wife, Melissa, have two sons, Luke and Ryan.

Messier had a tremendous career with the Lions, finishing his five years ranked 10th all-time in program scoring with 129 points in 133 games played. The team captain for three years, he was an OUA West all-star in 2012, a member of the OUA West all-rookie team in 2010 and led the Lions in scoring in each of his final three seasons.

YORK LIONS

LIONS SET TO FACE HUSKIES IN OPENING GAME OF U SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPS The puck drops on the 2017 U SPORTS Cavendish Farms University Cup men’s hockey championship this week in Fredericton, N.B. and the York University Lions are making their first appearance at the national championship since 2004.

produced another sweep, this time over the Guelph Gryphons, and included a dominant 6-2 victory in Game 2 that saw them score five unanswered goals in the second period. The Lions suffered their lone playoff loss in the OUA West finals against the Windsor Lancers, in the second game of the series, but they came out in the third and won 6-3 to advance to the Queen’s Cup and earn a berth at the national championships.

The Lions are seeded third for the eight-team tournament after winning their first Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Queen’s Cup championship on Saturday night with a thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over the Queen’s Gaels. They have drawn the Saskatchewan Huskies, seeded sixth after winning the Canada West silver medal, in the opening round and the two squads will face off on Friday at 1pm (AT) at the Aitken Centre on the campus of the University of New Brunswick.

In the OUA final, they spotted the Gaels a two-goal lead in the second period but came roaring back to take a 3-2 lead themselves early in the third. Queen’s evened the score again but Steven Janes scored the winner with 4:34 remaining to seal the victory.

York’s Queen’s Cup title and appearance at the national tourney is the culmination of two impressive seasons under sophomore head coach Chris Dennis, who was hired to lead the program ahead of the 2015-16 season and has be named the OUA West coach of the year in each of his first two seasons. In his rookie year behind the bench he engineered a worst-to-first turnaround but the team saw its season come to an end much sooner than anticipated with a first-round playoff exit.

A major reason for the Lions’ success this season was their strong defensive play, which begins in net. As a team, York led the conference with two goals allowed per game, and rookie netminder Mack Shields finished first in save percentage (1.78) and second in goals against average (.930) and league wins (13). The squad also boasts the division’s top defenceman in Derek Sheppard, who was named the OUA West most valuable player for the first time and the defensive player of the year for the second straight season after leading the OUA in scoring by blueliners with 32 points in 28 games.

The Lions bounced back in a big way this season. They put together another strong campaign, going 18-6-4 to finish in second place in the OUA West Division. The run included an impressive second half in which they won seven of their final 10 contests and lost only once in regulation after the calendar switched to 2017. They entered the national rankings in Week 12 and rose to a high of No. 6 in Week 17.

The Lions are making their 11th appearance at the University Cup and looking for their first championship since 1989. That last title capped a tremendous run by the program, where they won three titles in five seasons. All four quarter-finals and the U SPORTS bronze medal game will be webcast live online on sportscanada.tv/usports. Saturday’s championship semifinals, as well as the gold-medal contest on Sunday afternoon, will be broadcast on Sportsnet 360.

This year, the Lions carried that momentum into the playoffs and rolled to the conference title. They opened the post-season by sweeping the Lakehead Thunderwolves in two games, including winning the first by erasing a two-goal deficit and scoring the winner with 5.3 seconds remaining. The second round
