SEASON
OUTLOOK
Coming off an OUA title and fifth-place finish at the U SPORTS championships in 2017, the York University Lions men’s soccer team will try and remain at the top of the OUA standings and compete yet again for a national title in the 2018 season. The Lions have been on one of the most dominant runs in U SPORTS soccer history over the last decade, winning four national titles and five OUA championships since 2007. Such a sustained run of success leads to high expectations each year for the team, and the 2018 version of this soccer powerhouse is no different. Head coach Carmine Isacco recognizes the high expectations his team faces but prefers to focus on the process involved with becoming a winning team rather than the end result. “In terms of our expectations for this season, we just want this group of players to develop into a strong unit that works together and plays well
contributors for us. Steve K. is also a guy who scored some big goals for us last year and really helps drive the offense.” On the defensive side of the field the Lions are led by two-time U SPORTS all-Canadian Daniel Gogarty who Isacco calls ‘one of the best defenders in the nation.’ Gogarty will be joined on the back end by veterans Josh Kiselyov and Francesco Sinopoli, who both had breakout 2017 seasons and have established themselves as forces to be reckoned with in the OUA. In goal, sophomore Mike Argyrides will look to lead the Lions keepers this season after posting an undefeated 7-0-0 record with five shutouts in the 2017 OUA regular season. The recruiting pipeline has once again produced some high-end talent for the Lions, giving Isacco a new crop of players who will push the veterans for playing time and will be relied on heavily early in the season while some returning players work their way back from injuries.
WE HAVE SOME PLAYERS WHO WILL BE STEPPING INTO LARGER ROLES THIS YEAR, AND WE JUST WANT THEM TO LEARN TO BE RESPONSIBLE AND LEARN WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN.

ISACCO ON SEASON EXPECTATIONS
technically and tactically,” he said when asked what his expectations are this year. “We have some players who will be stepping into larger roles this year, and we just want them to learn to be responsible and learn what it takes to win. We’re hoping the younger guys can step in and mature quickly and I’m confident they will be able to keep up the standard we’ve set in the last few years.” Despite losing some key players from their roster, the Lions are still loaded with talent in every spot on the field. Reigning OUA West player of the year Cristian Cavallini returns for his third year with the club, star midfielders Eddie Lay and Steve Kloutsouniotis, will return for their third and fourth years respectively and striker Dylan Carreiro will return for his sophomore season. These are some of the veteran players Isacco will count on to maintain a high-powered offense that ranked second last season in the OUA in goals. “We have one of the top players in the league in Cristian Cavallini, who we think will be able to get back to where he was last year,” says Isacco on who he expects to produce on the offensive end this season. “As far as other veterans go we have Eddie and Dylan who are nursing some injuries, but if they can return to health they’ll be big
“We’ve got a lot of young players and we’re really excited about the whole group,” says Isacco. “We’ve got this new kid named Chris Jacovou who’s worked hard all summer and we’re hoping can be a big contributor for us. Marcus Brooks and Owen Carter are both transfer students who we expect to step into key roles for us. We also have a few guys who have been on the team for two or three years who haven’t played big roles for us but have been working hard in practice and learning what it takes to win. We need these guys to step in while some of our veterans are injured and make an impact right away.” The Lions’ record under Isacco has been nothing short of spectacular. Since taking over in 2007, the Lions have won 11 OUA West Division titles, made ten trips to the OUA Final Four, eight appearances at the national championships and hung a total of nine banners. With a stellar mix of returning veterans and fresh new faces on the roster, the 2018 Lions have the pieces in place to add some more hardware to their trophy case and extend their run of dominance this season and beyond.

COACH Carmine Isacco was named the head coach of the Lions men’s soccer team in 2007 and has built the program into one of the best in U SPORTS. He is now the master coach of York’s soccer program, overseeing both the men’s and women’s teams.
The Lions men’s team has made eight appearances at the national championships with him at the helm and has won four national banners (2008, 2010, 2014-15). They are also five-time OUA champions under his guidance (2007, 2013-15, 2017) and have won provincial medals in 10 of the 11 years he has led the program. The Lions have finished first in the OUA West Division in each of his 11 seasons and have earned the No. 1 spot in the weekly U SPORTS rankings in 10 of the 11 years since he took over. In 2015, he guided the women’s soccer team to an undefeated regular season (15-0-1) and the team was ranked as high as No. 2 in the U SPORTS rankings. Isacco is a six-time recipient of the OUA men’s coach of the year award, (2007, 2010, 2012-14, 2016) and won his first OUA women’s coach of the year award in 2015. He is also a two-time U SPORTS coach of the year (2007, 2014) and a four-time York coach of the year (2010, 2014-16). In 2015 he served as a guest coach with the Canadian senior men’s team for a pair of friendlies in advance of World Cup qualifying, and he was also an assistant coach with the U22 team at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.
He joined the Lions after spending two seasons as the head coach of the men’s team at the University of Toronto, where he led the Varsity Blues to a pair of OUA silver medals and a CIS silver medal in 2005. His coaching career has also seen him claim a national championship with the Hearts-Azzurri S.C. in the U18 division. In addition to his role as club head coach for HeartsAzzurri, he also served as the club’s general manager, responsible for the administration of over 2000 young soccer players. As head coach of Toronto Supra in the Canadian Professional Soccer League (CPSL), Isacco was named coach of the year in 2002 in the Ontario Youth Soccer League. As a player, Isacco took to the pitch at the University of Maryland, where he was named a freshman all-American and a three-time all-ACC first team member. In 1993 he participated in the World University Games. After graduating with a bachelor of arts degree from Maryland, he turned professional and played four seasons with the Toronto Italia Soccer Club in the National Soccer League (NSL). In his first season with the club he was named goalkeeper of the year and he also received Canadian all-star status three times. Following his stint in the NSL, Isacco was a player and assistant coach for the Milwaukee Rampage in the A-League. While with Milwaukee, he was named an all-league first-team all-star, playoff MVP and he captured a league title in 1997. He has also spent time with the Rochester Rhinos and Toronto Lynx as a player/assistant coach in the A-League. His indoor playing career in the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) saw him claim a league title in 1998 with the Milwaukee Wave and he was named a league all-star while playing for the Edmonton Drillers. Other stops in the indoor NPSL include the Toronto Shooting Stars and Buffalo Blizzard.

profile His coach has referred to him as the unsung hero of the team. That’s high praise indeed for fifth-year defender Daniel Gogarty, who has anchored Coach Carmine Isacco’s defense since the 2015 season. He’s come a long way from the six-year-old kid who first started out in the sport.
“I first started playing around the age of six,” said Gogarty, when asked to recall his introduction to the sport. “My uncle was coaching a house league team and my mom thought it would be a good idea to get me into sports. I ended up having tons of fun and kept playing, and I still have fun today every time I step on the field.” After being used as a reserve player during his rookie year in 2014, Gogarty broke through in 2015 and has started 45 regular season games and all 18 playoff games over the last three seasons. He’s been one of the Lions most important players since entering the starting lineup and has been a huge part of the Lions leading the OUA in goals against over the last four seasons. The centreback takes pride in being able to affect the outcome of the game without filling up the scoresheet. “My favourite part about playing defense is being able to help my team in any way I can,” said the Business Economics major. “It doesn’t have to be by scoring goals (which never happens!) but by making an impact any way I can and making the players around me better. The little things that might go unnoticed like breaking up a play, or playing a proper ball to one of the forwards are just a couple things that I take a great deal of pride in.” ‘Gogs’ as he’s referred to by his teammates, has seen nothing but success since suiting up for the Lions. The team has won two U SPORTS championships (2014, 2015) and has qualified for the
national championship tournament in each of his four years. They have also picked up three OUA championship titles (2014, 2015, 2017) as well as the OUA silver medal in 2016. The Scarborough, Ont., native has also received personal accolades as he’s twice been named a U SPORTS all-Canadian and is a two-time OUA first-team all-star. While the personal accolades are nice, Gogarty points to the national championship win in 2015 as the high point of his career so far at York. “In second year, winning nationals on home turf was such a surreal experience and definitely one of my favourite soccer moments,” said Gogarty, when asked what stands out from his career heading into his final season. “We worked so hard all year and to see it come to fruition was very satisfying. Being able to set a national championship as a lofty goal at the beginning of the year and knowing the hard work and preparation that went into it was extremely rewarding.” Back in 2015, Gogarty was in his first season as a starter with the Lions and ended up being named the player of the game in the national championship final. Now one of the elder statesmen in the Lions dressing room and armed with a championship pedigree, Gogarty is counted on as much for his leadership off the field as his play on the field. He hopes to pass on his knowledge to the younger players on the team, much like the senior players did for him when he was a rookie. “Being a first-year student-athlete can be a hard transition, but there are some things you can do to make it a little easier,” said Gogarty. “The most important thing is finding a healthy balance between student life, athlete life and having fun. With so much going on it’s sometimes hard to find free time to enjoy yourself while still getting all your school work done and going to practice. But making sure you enjoy yourself along the way is definitely very important, and the more you enjoy student life the more motivated you will be in the classroom and on the field.” That motivation has led to Gogarty achieving great things on the pitch throughout his Lions career. With one more season to go wearing the York red and white, Gogarty and the rest of his teammates are primed to take another run to the top of the standings. ACADEMIC & FINANCIAL SUPPORT
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING York University is one of only a handful of institutions in Canada that has two dedicated strength and conditioning coaches for its student-athletes. The Lions work closely with strength and conditioning staff, who create programs based on the needs of the athlete and coaches on high-performance lifts and movements. Team and individual workouts are available and education on all aspects of strength and conditioning is provided, including proper warm-ups and cool-downs, plyometrics, power, energy systems development, strength and flexibility. Programs are created for both in-season and off-season workouts. Every training session is designed for the needs of the athlete and individual sport. The training phase and focus changes throughout the year and are based on the competition schedule and off-season periodization program. The strength and conditioning coaches also work closely with the athletic therapy group on rehabilitating injured players.

Financial assistance can be provided from a variety of sources including OSAP, scholarships, bursaries, private awards and employment. Athletics & Recreation understands the importance of providing Athletic Financial Awards (AFAs) to entering student-athletes and has developed a number of awards, valued at $22,500 each ($4,500 per year up to five years). These awards are given annually to elite student-athletes that have achieved an 80% entering average and maintain a 6.0 grade point average.
In addition to sport medicine physicians, York employs a large variety of specialists including an orthopedic surgeon, dentist, neurosurgeon, radiologist, cardiologist, physiotherapist, chiropractor, massage therapist, osteopath, pedorthist and a mental health specialist.
