TONIGHT’S EMCEE KARIM KHALIL York University Sport & Recreation would like to thank Karim Khalil for officiating tonight’s festivities. A York volleyball alumnus, Khalil was an outside hitter for the team for five years (2008-13). Throughout his career he was the team captain for three seasons and the team MVP in 2010-11. Away from the court he was also a tremendous student, earning CIS academic all-Canadian honours three times and serving as a student-athlete mentor with the P.A.W.S. Program. He was also the recipient of York’s Stuart G. Robbins Award, given to the studentathlete with the highest GPA among Sport Excellence Award winners. Khalil’s contributions to York’s varsity program extended beyond the court and the classroom. He earned the OUA’s Dale Iwanoczko Sportsman Award in 2012 for his stellar combination of academics, athletics and community service, and he was president of the York Sport Council for the 2012-13 season. He capped his career by earning York’s prestigious Charles Saundercook Memorial Trophy in 2013. Khalil is currently working on his master’s degree in Kinesiology & Health Science at York.

2014-2015 Interuniversity Sport Banquet
YORK UNIVERSITY SPORT COUNCIL PRESIDENT GREETINGS
On behalf of York University’s Varsity Sport Council, we would like to welcome you to the 2014-15 Interuniversity Sport Awards Banquet. Tonight we are all here to celebrate both the individual and team successes experienced throughout this past season. We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the numerous events arranged by the sport council, including the food drive for the York Food Bank, Movember initiatives to raise awareness and funds for male health and the Lions 4 Lions events throughout the past year in support of your fellow varsity athletes. To the sport council members who have attended the meetings and provided so many amazing ideas and helped with these initiatives, we thank you all for your enthusiasm and assistance as none of this could have been possible without your help. We would also like to acknowledge the individuals that enthusiastically attended the regular season and playoff games, cheering on your fellow Lions and demonstrating your ongoing pride. We can assure you that it is very much appreciated and does not go unnoticed. Furthermore, we would like to congratulate all athletes for the outstanding success that they have had this past season. Each and every competing team represented York University with pride and we want to thank you for raising the bar for the upcoming seasons. On behalf of the York University Sport Council, we would like to thank you all for being here tonight to celebrate our successes, particularly our special guests for their continued support, in addition to the administrative staff, coaches and therapists who are the foundation of our programs and work with us daily to help us reach our potential. A very special thank you to all of the student-athletes in attendance today, who have dedicated countless hours to being the best they can be both in the classroom and on the court, field, track, ice and mat. To the graduating athletes, we would like to thank you for all of your hard work and commitment throughout your entire university career. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavours and would like to remind you that you will always be part of the Lion family. To the returning athletes: congratulations once again on the completion of yet another successful season. Let’s use the memories of this past year, both the good and the bad, to motivate us in the years to come and continue to accomplish bigger and better things each successive year! Sheereen Harris & Victoria Iantorno Co-Presidents, York University Sports Council

The men’s basketball team had a solid season, achieving a playoff spot with a 10-9 record and second place at the OUA East standings. The mark earned the Lions a home playoff game for the first time since 2007. Despite losing out to the Laurentian Voyageurs in the first round of the playoffs, the team can reminisce in several positive results throughout the season. Their highlight victory came on the road in Windsor, where the Lions scored a huge upset win over the No. 5 Lancers, who went on to win the
OUA silver medal. Nick Tufegdzich, the graduating forward, was named an OUA first-team all-star for his brilliant final season, ending with an average of 19.1 points and 10.1 rebounds per game, one of only five players in the CIS to achieve a double-double. Rookie point guard Gene Spagnuolo established himself in the league, earning a place in the OUA all-rookie team, while another rising star is sophomore Nathan Culbreath, who scored a career-high 36 points in a win over Toronto.

The football team faced a tough season without a win in eight games. The Lions played their best contest on the road against the Laurier Golden Hawks, holding an offence that had averaged 46 points through the first half of the season to just 27 in the game. They also nearly recorded a victory in the final game of the season against the Waterloo Warriors when Jahmari Bennett made a touchdown and a two-point conversion pass to tie the game at 25-25 in the final quarter. However, the Warriors took the lead once more with a
touchdown just over three minutes before the end of the game. Graduating eam captain Trevor King was honoured at the final game of the year after spending two seasons with the Lions, where he started 16 games on the offensive line. First-year defensive back Rees Paterson was named in the OUA all-rookie team for his impressive debut season. In addition to his 25.5 tackles, Paterson led the team with 115 punt return yards and was second with 170 yards on kick-off returns.

YEAR IN REVIEW The men’s volleyball team replicated its 2013 regular-season record at 13-7, finishing fourth in the OUA standings. The Lions had a slow start to the season but triumphed at the right time to gain a home court game in the playoffs. The Lions began the season in the CIS Top 10 at No. 9, their first appearance in a national ranking in more than eight years, but struggled to come out on top as they had a record of 8-7 with only three weeks remaining. With the help of leading scorer Ray Szeto, the Lions were able to win their last five games to climb to fourth place. In the OUA playoffs the Lions battled Queen’s in the quarter-finals and won 3-1, moving on to the semifinals where they
lost to Waterloo in four sets. The Lions then fought Windsor in a battle for the OUA bronze and a spot at nationals, and the Lions won 3-2 to qualify for the CIS championships for the first time since 2005. The Lions lost their first game of the CIS tournament to Dalhousie in heartbreaking fashion, nearly completing a full comeback before falling short by two points in the fifth set. The Lions won the rematch with Waterloo but lost in the consolation final to host Saskatchewan for a sixth-place finish. Szeto was a CIS all-Canadian for the third time, while Josh Henderson was named the OUA and CIS rookie of the year. Both of them were also OUA all-stars.
