(Ak.’sa.ra) Instructor : Marcelo Spina DS 5040 : Thesis A project that speculates upon the dialogue between typography and typology, where the conversation results to ground and expand the architectural possibilities of the notions of characters. The project is a museum of writting located in SongDo, Incheon. Where the context is very vertical in contrast to the flat expansive site. Typology is the “Shed”, where itself is deployed in a way that it is shifted, multiplied and reoriented in an oblique manner to contrast the site. The arrangment allows for multiple spaces to function as an individual or as a conjoined spaces depending on the programs. This allows for programatic division amongst the museum and also allows for directed circulation. The typology creates an introduction to typography aspects of the project. Typography, creation of semantical characters formed by silhouettes. Creates these figural characters that behaves like a font. The creation originated from geometrical aspects of the Han Gul. The circles, the orthagonals and the notchs. Visible throughout the project both elevational and in plan as figural profiles, cutouts and pathways. The verticality of the context made sure that the characters could be seen through plans through adjacent buildings. The end of typology is the beginning of typography. Both metaphoircally and literally. The figural idea of writting a sentence, where it would have words and spaces applies on to the project itself. Creating a physcial manifestation and the embodiement of Aksara. A perfect habitat for the collection of word art.

8 Typographical Qualities

In the text “Animate Architecture: Twelve Reasons to get into Character,” Joseph Altshuler defines characters as buoyant elements that present diverse silhouettes or faces in different elevations. They function alone as well as collectively, producing the capacity for hidden pochee to be revealed. As Altshuler argues, “Characters are adaptable but most importantly they are adoptable.”

(Ak.’sa.ra) / DS 1021 The materiality of this project differs on the exterior and interior. While the material treatment is used to subtly accentuate the elongation of the project, and also has a quality of elegance. The exterior is made up of white concrete and zebra marble, whereas the interior is characterized by a contrast of pure white material with a reflective concrete finish in order to make sure that the center of attention is on the art pieces themselves.

Volumetric Partition Instructor : Ramiro Diaz Granados DS 1040 : DS 4A Studio AMIGAA Positions A project solving the aspects of volumetric partitioning. Each spaces in the house are made to be experienced volumetrically. The idea of punching subtracting and interlocking masses helps in creating this effect. The idea for the profram was that these volumetric seoarates inhabitant from the rest of the world. Thus the huge excavation of the site. From the street view, you only see just a part of the house which consists of guest housings. Guest are intentionally only allowed to be a spectator to the house. As you descend downwards the house, a realization that it is on a cantilievered mass on top of a pool suggesting the idea of baptizing idea to enter to the oasis. From then on is a free plan space consisting of the idea of fun. Whilst at the same time you also see punched in interior volumes that serves as the dividsion of the living quarters. Each subtracting mass suggests the idea of transitional spaces which is a semi indoor outdoor space. The outer space consists of the idea of a technological oasis filled with solar panels jungle. One of the constraints of the project is to develop a developable surgaces which was tackled by the help of the precedent of neil denari’s no mass house. External Reference: Neil Denari’s No Mass House As a precedent, It is a house that uses the idea of planar and conical surfaces. The idea behind this house is surfaces vs voids. These are shown best in the windows, which are created with two dierent proles that is setback creating a 3dimensional surface. These proles are derived from the arc of the circles and lines. Thus creating a valid planar surface for the inbetween surfaces.

Fake House Instructor : Pavel Getov, David Ross AS 3041: Advanced Construction and Project Delivery In Collaboration with, Audrey Haliman, Yibo Feng, Zhiao Feng The course focuses on advanced methods of project delivery and construction documents incorporating digital technologies and investigating new models for linking design and construction processes. It introduces Building Information Modeling as one of the tools for realignment of the traditional relationships between the project stakeholders. Using a single unit residential building located in Los Angles, students will analyze and develop the architecture by creating a detailed 3d digital model and a set of 2d construction documents speciďŹ cally tailored for the design challenges of a single unit residential project. Lectures and site visits to fabricators and construction sites will further inform students of technical documentation methods for projects that are operating on the forefront of design and construction technologies to date.

This is in terms of material and spatial performance that leads to new aesthetics. Whilst understanding the basic structural behavior in withstanding gravity and lateral forces. Using the idea of (murals/relics) (profiles). An application from 2 dimensional to 3 dimensional. Solving the problem to extrusions and to move from flatness. Whilst also providing spatial protrusions in the building. The building is located in New York where the Hudson Yard is currently being constructed. The highline passes beneath the tower coursing through the plaza below. Creating an interaction between the tower to the highline. The idea of “camouflaging” comes to mind. From a far perspective the building is something whilst from a near perspective it is something else. To create this idea, windows are animated to be in different sizes . These “pores” not only creates arpeture but also at night lets light out thus the building looks different both night and days.

Tectonics Instructor : Ramiro Diaz-Granados, Maxi Spina AS3033: AS Tectonics + Materialty In Collaboration with Xitong Zhang, Yibo Feng, Zhiao Feng The seminar joint areas of investigation are Tectonics –understood as architecture’s material anatomy and its effects- and Performance –largely consisting of technical, technological and cultural environmental dimensions. The class focuses predominantly on the building envelope –particularly on its forms of articulation and means of producing apertures. The articulation of architecture’s outermost surface will be understood through the logics of panelization, material and pattern. Apertures will be understood through the logics of openings or fenestration, glazing, and enclosure. These combined constitute the economies and aesthetics of how architecture produces interior/exterior relations and affective qualities; embodies a crucial environmental role; etc. Working in groups throughout the entire semester, students will use precedents as a vehicle to document the anatomy and tectonics of each followed by a speculative exercise on how to modify one element or sub-system towards shifting its effects or producing new ones altogether. In order to effectively modify the precedent, students will be required to have a thorough understanding of the economies and principles underlying it, so as to produce both technical knowledge and critical awareness of embedded cultural habits. The class will thus seek out an alternative understanding of the Tectonic –one that not only mirrors the realm of construction –materials, methods, sequences, tolerances, etc.- but also embraces architectural processes of expression, encompassing issues of geometry and technique; posture and character; etc. Methodologically, the class frames its object of study through the possibilities of a sectional approach. The primary mode of design and representation is the cut-away axonometric drawing.

The site of this project is in the Los Angeles River in between the sixth street and the seventh bridge. There is an immediate need for public spaces. The idea was to turn this abandoned concrete shell into an idea of a park that functions in both dry and rainy seasons. The use of water color as a technique is an excuse to diverge away from the norms of a natural park into a new paradgim of a modern urban landscape. With the chaotic nature of a water splash, grid like patterns are introduced to keep order in the chaotic overflow of the behavior of water. The colors are specifically chosen to reflect the behaviours of people. While taking primarily from the red and yellow color group. Both color stimulates the body for physical and mental activity. During the dry seasons, high intensive activities takes place. in these “activity pockets”. Activities such as parkour, skateboarding, tennis and basketballs. During the rainy seasons however, the park uses its “activitiy pockets” acting as water reservoirs to reduce water retention. These are then allowed to flow down and hold water that goes for filtration underground. The use of the tower is to signify a landmark. As a point of location. The profile is taken from different study of outlines of water tower in combination with the water color splashes. Which also translates to some of the figures on the landscape. (Iconography) The entrance access to the park is through mission street. There are two parking lots. These leads to a circulation path that goes around the landscape connnecting to all the activities area. There are also intermediate pocket spaces that connects the channel to the park. Allowing visitors to engage the park by allowing them to come down or just sit around and enjoy the view in the spanish stair.

This is the ďŹ nal chosen Composition and Color Combination to be applied on both park and watercolor. The color are both magenta, pink, yellow, with a hint of green. Splashes ranges from high speed splashes which are characterized by its long stretches of water droplets. Strokes are also combined with slow and huge droplets from paint brush which are characterized by the dilution of the water color and the puddled drops that creates a fusion between colors. The composition is allowed to dry before being layered with more droplets and puddle creating these vignettes of layered brushes.

Kitchenette Kitchenette is a place of congregation of each cultural native’s cuisine. After all where is a better place to learn than to learn from grandma’s Kitchen. Kitchenette invites students to learn to cook cultural cuisines with qualified completent men and women from all over the world for a socially immersive cooking class of their respective cultural cuisines. We bring in people from countries such as Burma and India to teach how to make the perfect tasting Laphet and also the famous Briyani. The place is located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. For wherelse better to be than to be in the city of melting pot itself. The building space itself offers multiple ktichens that will be holding courses ranging from Asian Cuisine to European cuisines and many more. The place also challenges the main concept between public vs private area. Should kitchen demonstration be showcased or should they be hidden as most kitchens. Programs are divided into three main categories like the main ingredients to cooking. Which are SALT, PEPPER, and SUGAR. Where salt is the main congregation area, the pepper is the necessity programs, and finally the sugar is the back of the house programs. The project looks upon the domesticness of the site in Los Angeles where most things you do at home that requires privacy is reversed and is shown more publicly. And use this role reversal and incorporate it to its programmatic division. The morphology is based on a bounding box created by the studio program consisting of 90’x90’x90’. It uses the 3 Slabs and used actions of rotations and Trimmings to create the morphology of the building. In it, has the potential to develop planar to volumetric relationship causing this to produce one direct circulation that goes through two atriums (exterior and interior)

Excalibur Instructor : Herwig Basumgartner DS 1031 : 3B Studio AMIGAA Arch&Tect II In Partnership with Xitong Zhang A project solving different types of aggregations of module in order to produce a functional spactial experience. This project is located next to the SCI-Arc building. This was meant to be an extension for the school, where it will house the new architectural school. The logic of the building is a clear perpendicular axis system where the modules are aggregated in a way that it behaves in like a protrusions from the main axis. The program includes Architectural Studios, Class Rooms, Fabrication Spaces, Service areas and Public Spaces. This project was also able to explore the tectonics of the building and introduces a means of safety egress systems in a building. The ďŹ nal product was also a 1/16th inch scale model of the building which was made through various methods including CNC milling and 3D printing (clear paint resin, powder and plastic).

Physical Model Model Construction The physical model was constructed using different types of medium. The outer shell are created through 3D powder prints. Floor plates are created through styrene. The arpertures are created through different ways. Whilst the planar ones are hand cutted, the curved arpertures are created through resin prints and translucent plastic printing.
