Welcome
to my home A bit about me I’m Laura Grice and I live with my partner David and our two cats Pablo and Gigi.
Where I live My home is a twobedroom end terrace built about 1910 in Sevenoaks, Kent. I moved here in 2018.
What I wanted to change The house was stuck in a 1970s timewarp with woodchip and old carpets everywhere. The kitchen and bathroom were in dire need of a revamp too.
Feature Karen Wilson Photos Fiona Walker-Arnott
How I made it my own Rather than designing each room in isolation, I chose Dulux Heritage shades that toned well together. This helped to make the house feel more cohesive.
My favourite part It has to be the dining room, as it was such a big transformation. I’m really delighted at how bright and airy it now feels.
This was my After buying a two-bedroom house that was stuck in the 14 homestylemag.co.uk

‘I requisitioned the original dark-wood fire surround from the dining room’
Living room When I first moved in, this room om featured magnolia woodchip wallpaper and a pink carpet, but I loved the bay window and knew it could look so much better. One of the worst features was the 1960s turquoise-tiled fireplace, which had a condemned gas burner in front. Having taken out the chimney breast next door, we were able to requisition the original dark-wood fire surround from the dining room, paint it white and install a new wood burner. I’ve also gone for engineered wood parquet flooring throughout the ground floor to help the rooms flow together.
‘I love the wall colour in here,’ says Laura. ‘It’s Green Slate by Dulux Heritage and has elements of green, grey and blue, which change in different light.’ New shutters from Shutters Up enhance the bay window, while a chunky teal throw from M&S and rug from TK Maxx add a welcome depth of colour
first big renovation ’70s, Laura Grice used some creative tricks to make it feel bigger and lighter Dec 2019 / Jan 2020 15
‘I’m glad I was a bit braver and went for a darker grey Shaker kitchen,’ says Laura. ‘The hexagon tiles from Topps Tiles are made from recycled glass and really complement the marble-look quartz, adding a bit of texture.’ The skeleton clock is from Wayfair
A carpenter built the alcove cupboards and shelving, which perfectly suit the age of the house, but Laura has added some modern colour pops, such as the teal Margot chair from Made. The reindeer is from Studio
My story... ‘I didn’t really like this house to start with – it felt dark and small – but I loved the location and could see its potential. The sweet old lady who lived here before hadn’t decorated since 1978, so there was lots of woodchip and an avocado bathroom suite. I was keen to live in Sevenoaks, where I work, and after selling my mews house in a nearby village, I moved into a rental property so I could pounce when a suitable place came up for sale. I wasn’t averse to a fixer-upper but didn’t want a complete renovation project. However, after losing out on three or four houses, that’s what I ended up with! Although it was my first big project, I wasn’t completely clueless as my parents had renovated several homes and I work for a property developer. I wanted it done quickly, so got professionals in – the whole place needed re-wiring, re-plumbing and re-plastering. I considered opening up the ground floor and adding an extension, which would have cost £20,000, but instead I decided to take out the chimney breasts in the dining room and second bedroom, as well as opening up the kitchen door. A few months after buying the house I met my partner David and, in November last year, he moved in. It was lovely to spend our first Christmas together. While David is very supportive of my style, which is a mix of new and vintage with a few pops of colour, I’m not sure he’d choose the same things. We’ve joked about giving him the downstairs toilet to decorate, which he’s threatening to style with a The Lion King theme. Luckily, he hasn’t got around to it yet! Next, I plan to tackle the back garden and, in the future, I might consider a loft conversion to create a third bedroom.’ 16 homestylemag.co.uk

Expert advice How to remove chimney breasts Create more space in a small property with this canny trick O Chimney breasts can be a
lovely feature, but in a smaller property where every inch is valuable, they can sometimes take up too much space. Removing a chimney breast can make a room feel much bigger and lighter. Expect to pay about £1,500 to £2,000 for the work. O You don’t normally need
planning permission to remove a chimney breast, unless you live in a conservation area or your home is listed. However you’ll need building regulations approval if just part of the chimney breast is to be removed (for instance, the ground-floor section) and the rest needs to be supported. If it’s located on a wall shared with a neighbour,
you’ll need to serve them a party wall notice to get permission for the work. O Usually you’ll be left with a chimney stack in the loft, which will require supports such as gallow brackets or a steel beam. It will also need to be ventilated at the top and bottom. Make sure the work includes levelling the floor and re-plastering the wall too. You’ll also need new skirting boards and possibly coving to match any that you already have. O Removing a chimney breast can open up lots of possibilities. For instance, it allows you to fit wall-to-wall shelving, cupboards or wardrobes, and can even transform a single bedroom into a double. Although it frees up a relatively small area, about 5ft by 1ft, you’ll be surprised at the difference it can make, particularly when it comes to placing furniture.
Kitchen ‘The rusty sliding door from the he dining room to the kitchen was the first thing to be ripped out. It only opened by about two feet, so I had to squeeze through it sideways. Our builder widened the opening as far as he could without having to add a steel beam. It’s an idea I saw when I viewed a neighbouring house and it’s made the kitchen feel much more open-plan. The layout hasn’t changed too much in here. I added a dishwasher and replaced the freestanding fridge and tiny breakfast bar with a built-in fridge and larder unit, but the sink and hob are in the same position. The quartz worktop in a marble finish was the bank-breaker though – it cost more than the Howdens units.’
‘My favourite things in the kitchen are the Gluggle jugs, which were antique finds,’ says Laura. ‘My cats broke the first ones I bought, so I had to scour the internet to find replacements.’ The bread bin with bamboo top came from Amazon. Dec 2019 / Jan 2020 17
Laura has a good eye for a bargain and picked up this Victorian farmhouse table for £140 from a local vintage shop, while the sideboard cost £120 from Vinterior. ‘It had already been upcycled with grey paint, so it matches my chairs from the Cotswold Company,’ she says

Inspiring homes Stylish plates and a gold-spot runner from M&S add a modern edge to Laura’s Victorian farmhouse table
A Burford ottoman from The Cotswold Company is great for extra storage and has been dressed with a festive garland from Very.
The h Peacockk Christmas h decoration and baubles in jewel tones from The Contemporary Home suit Laura’s elegant scheme. The Flamingo print is by Fy and the lamp from Oliver Bonas
Dining room ‘This was the darkest room in the house with dark-wood panelling, yellow walls above, a brown carpet and a fluorescent bar light that looked like it belonged over a snooker table! I was surprised by how much lighter it felt when the chimney breast came out. As the house is an end terrace, we didn’t need a party wall agreement either. My favourite element is the original panelling. I had it painted in Turtle Dove Grey by Dulux Heritage with Indian White on the walls above for a classic, timeless look.’
Dec 2019 / JJan 2020 19 D
Master bedroom ‘With a massive crack in the plaster and mustard yellow woodchip wallpaper, the master bedroom definitely needed attention. Luckily the survey had shown the crack was due to historical subsidence. Once the walls were re-plastered, I opted for Beachcomb Grey paint by Dulux Heritage, which works really well with the colours elsewhere in the house. I wasn’t sure about the bed at first. Part of me wanted to go neutral and safe but at the last minute I picked teal. When it arrived I didn’t like it, but now, I’m absolutely won over.’
‘I totally fell in love with the bed from Loaf, which has much needed storage drawers underneath’
Style idea
This room has an eclectic look, rather than having matching bed and bedside tables. ‘I found the old school chest of drawers on Vinterior’ Laura says. She makes good use of the picture rails for hanging useful shelves and decorations
If you’re short on storage, forgo a small bedside table with legs for a substantial chest of drawers instead
Inspiring homes Laura re-purposed a kitchen base unit from Howdens as a vanity unit, and had a white wall cabinet from Wayfair painted to match it
The starting point in here was the free-standing bath from Victorian Plumbing, combined with patterned floor tiles from Topps Tiles for a classic, elegant look. The mermaid art print is from Paper Tailor
Bathroom ‘I’d always wanted a free-standing bath h but had never had the space before, so when my architect brother-in-law suggested knocking the bathroom and separate toilet together to make the room bigger, I didn’t have to think twice. It meant moving the toilet and blocking up the old door, but this also freed up space for a walk-in shower. Previously, the room had a worn avocado suite, brown carpet and cork tiles on the ceiling. There was also a built-in cupboard to hide a water tank, which made the room feel quite small. Needless to say it’s a massive transformation and my new bath looks lovely under the window.’
‘I’d always wanted a free-standing bath but never had the space before’
What I learned... O Always have a contingency and add 10 per cent to any quote you’re given. I was lucky that I bought a home at the bottom end of my budget so had money left to get all the work that was needed done in one go. O Décor-wise, I may have made some slightly safer choices, but I think I’ll be happier with them further down the line.
‘All the furniture in the guest room was either gifted or second hand,’ says Laura. ‘For instance, my mum bought the bed in the ‘90s for my teenage bedroom’
O I didn’t have the best experience with my builders. They said the work would take eight weeks, but it ended up taking eight months! It can be pot luck sometimes, but if you do lots of research and speak to several firms, you can save yourself problems later.

Measure and cut the timber to your desired length. Then measure and mark a pair of holes, equally spaced apart, at each end of the shelf. Drill holes at these marks, using a suitably sized drill bit for the width of the jute rope. Sand any rough edges, and clean the shelf with a dry cloth. Apply a coat of wood varnish to the shelf, and leave to dry. Cut two pieces of jute rope measuring 1m in length each. Thread the ends of each length through the holes in the shelf and knot tightly to secure in place. Hang the finished shelf on the wall using self-adhesive hooks. Welcome
to my home A bit about me I am Mohamed Hussen and I live here with my partner and our dog Wilbur. My Instagram is @fresh. lavender.style
Where I live Our home is a threebedroom 1960s semi in Coventry. We have lived here for just over two years.
What I wanted to change The kitchen was tiny, but we wanted a utility room, walk-in pantry and cloakroom – so we extended.
Feature Lorraine Luximon Photos Simon Whitmore
How I made it my own We travel overseas a lot and bring things back for the house. Every wall is white so we can add colour with accessories.
My favorite part With about 40 plants in the kitchen, we have created a bit of an urban jungle! It’s all anchored around the orange island – our favourite feature.
‘I love bright shades, so adding a splash of colour to my house was probably one of the easier decisions’
We love to take Inspired by his travels, Mohamed Hussen added plenty of 26 homestylemag.co.uk

‘After extending the rear of the house to create our kitchen and pantry, we went for Howdens’ Fairford kitchen in Navy. We knew we wanted a pop of colour with the island, but couldn’t decide on the shade. During one of our trips to New York, we were exploring Brooklyn Heights and came across a beautiful house with navy cladding and an orange door. We knew at that point we had to have an orange island! We also wanted floor tiles that had the wow factor. Needing to keep costs down, we spent a lot of time shopping around. Nothing really stood out until one day we stumbled on these Laura Ashley Mr Jones tiles from British Ceramic Tile. We instantly fell in love with them!’

‘We knew we wanted navy units and a white worktop, but we wanted to add a twist with something different, so we chose the island from Howdens, which we painted orange’
My story… We decided to move on the spur of the moment, four years after renovating our last house. The kitchen was a deciding factor; although our previous home had a good-sized one, we wanted room to display even more of the things we’d collected. To us a kitchen isn’t just a place to cook, it’s a sociable space, and we also really wanted a walk-in pantry – that was the dream after growing up watching so many food shows. The hosts always had the most beautiful kitchens with lovely things on display and walk-in pantries. As soon as we got the keys to the house, we started sketching plans, shopping for tiles, making lists and saving pictures of things we liked, as well as arranging to get quotes from builders. We knew we wanted to do the whole house from top to bottom, rather than a room at a time – so it was quite full on! We extended the back of the house to create our kitchen area, and added a Velux window and bi-fold doors to let in lots of light. The house also needed re-wiring, plastering and new central heating. Although the kitchen took up most of the budget, we shopped around when it came to decorating and accessories. Recently we completed the exterior – the windows and doors were in good condition, but they didn’t fit in with our vision, so we spent some time researching ways to change them. We found a company that sprayed them for us and we love them now. At some point, we’d like to do another renovation and we have a five-year plan. We have an investment property that we rent out, so while we might not move again, we may look to do another place up and rent it out or sell it – it’s less upheaval then! 28 homestylemag.co.uk
Mohamed wanted 3.5metre shelves in the kitchen, but couldn’t find anything within budget, so he bought oak worktops online and had them cut in half. They are the perfect place to display the couple’s collection of plants. ‘I love plant stylist Hilton Carter – he’s a great inspiration to me,’ says Mohamed

‘We were keen to have lots of places to display things, so had these shelves built in the dining area to show all our treasures. We’ve painted them twice since moving in! The carpet is our real standout feature’

Expert advice How to plan a kitchen extension
which can take between three and six months.
Make sure you get it right with this sound advice
O Hiring an architect is a good
O Planning the building work at the same time as the kitchen layout is important, to ensure that electrical, extraction, drainage and plumbing services are in the right place, so you won’t have to make any compromises on the layout at a later stage. O Once you have an idea of
the size and type of extension you want, you’ll need to work out a realistic schedule. Factor in time to submit planning applications and party wall agreements if required, as well as time for the construction, 30 homestylemag.co.uk
idea – although not essential for smaller projects, where a structural engineer or builder may suffice. An architect will ensure your plans are sound, as well being a good source of recommended traders and contractors. Check that the one you pick is RIBA Chartered. O After the building work is
finished, make sure you’re happy and that any snagging issues can be dealt with. These are the knock-on effects of the building settling back on its foundations after the build is completed. Ensure that all electrical, plumbing and gas works are signed off too.
Inspiring homes Living area After completely gutting this room and replastering, ng the couple painted it a fresh white. But it has plenty of pops of colour that contrast with the monochrome carpet. ‘I’ve seen a lot houses that have been redecorated beautifully, but don’t feel homely and I didn’t want that, so it was important for our lounge especially to be cosy.’ Although the fireplace is not currently working, the wooden lintel creates a traditional fireside look. Mohamed plans to add a wood burner in here. The star of the room is the IKEA Strandmon wing chair in sunny yellow. ‘I didn’t trust myself to paint the woodwork, but we’ve upcycled a few things, including our TV unit, which is painted in a similar grey; and a side table, which is now a plant stand. We get lots of natural light in here, thanks to the bay window.’
Style idea A reclaimed beam makes a great fireplace lintel
‘We knew the things that worked for us – like a separate kitchen, and livingdining room’
A bright yellow Strandmon armchair and footstool from IKEA make a relaxing spot at the fireside. The mantel has been dressed for Christmas with a pompom garland from Habitat Dec 2019 / Jan 2020 31
Master bedroom Mohamed has just completed this room, going for a modern Scandinavian feel. The wooden Wayfair Graham platform bedframe and floral artwork from Desenio create a sophisticated boutique hotel feel. It’s the only room with colour on the walls, as Mohamed wanted it to have a different feel. They went for Charcoal Sketch paint by Valspar on one of the walls as a feature. Cushions from H&M, Zara Home and Cushoo continue the monochrome theme, and he has kept it looking light and laid-back with linen bedding. A spider ceiling light from Amazon adds a dramatic focal point over the bed.

Bathroom ‘After ripping out the old corner shower and ugly carpet, we went for a classic suite and a grey Camberley vanity unit from Victoria Plum. To keep costs down, we opted for plain white metro brick tiles and enhanced the scheme with statement Bloomsbury floor tiles from Tons of Tiles, which completed the look of our bathroom. Naturally, we had to have some greenery in here and the shelf, which we’ve filled with moistureloving plants, came from Luxeology.’
The couple decided to have the Laura Ashley tiles they’d used in the kitchen in the hallway and downstairs cloakroom to create a feeling of continuity. The Chilson console is from Garden Trading
This room continues the botanical vibe seen in the kitchen. As the hanging plants are on hooks, they can easily be moved when guests come to stay!
While the suite is fairly classic, a blackframed shower screen from Victoria Plum adds a modern look. Towels from Next in grey coordinate with the floor tiles. For similar shelves, try Rockett St George
What I learned... O We spent a lot of time researching, and sourcing things online to try to keep the costs down. In the kitchen, the units came from one place, the appliances from another, and the handles from elsewhere. We ordered the worktops online.
Guest room
A Gjöra bed from IKEA takes centre stage in the guest room. ‘I’d say my home style is a real mixture. In the guest bedroom, we went for a relaxing blush-pink scheme,’ says Mohamed. The birch wood bed has a Scandinavian feel to it, which is a refreshing contrast to the modern and colourful look Mohamed has gone for downstairs.
O I think the mass of plants really brings something different to our home – they give it an almost jungle feel and brighten up the place. Plants do take some looking after though – we water them a few at a time in the sink. O Although we have renovated a house before, as this was a larger-scale project, we learned a lot about the planning-application process. It seemed a bit daunting at the beginning, but we got there in the end!

Measure and mark points along the centre section of each wooden letter, spaced out equally, about 4cm apart.

At each point, drill a hole large enough for the bulbs of your fairy lights to fit through. Work from the front for a neat finish. Position the letters in the middle of the MDF board, and then neatly cut it down to size with a saw. Sand any rough edges on the letters and MDF board, and clean using a dry cloth. Drill larger holes through the MDF only, behind the first and last hole on each letter, so you are able to hide the wiring and the battery box at the back. before applying a second coat, if necessary. Re-drill the holes if the paint has clogged them up. Feed the entire length of fairy lights through the first hole in the MDF, so only the battery pack is at the back. Fit a bulb in each hole of the first letter, leaving the wires at the back. Feed the rest of the length behind the MDF, and then pull back through at the next letter. Repeat until all the holes have bulbs. Feed the remainder of the lights behind the board. Glue the letters in place on the board and then leave to dry.

Welcome
Lianne opted for a monochrome and green scheme as she wanted to create a grown-up evening space. ‘I’ve always loved black and white, so I had a lot of pieces already,’ she says. ‘Initially I wanted wall panelling but impatience and cost made me realise I could get a similar effect by painting three-quarters of the way up. After lots of tester pots I chose Inky Prose by Valspar, which also helps the television and radiators blend into the wall.’
to my home A bit about me I’m Lianne Kilroy and I’m married to Daniel. We have two sons: one is four and the other is almost a year old.
Where I live My home is a fivebedroom 1930s detached house in Macclesfield. We’ve lived here since 2018.
What I wanted to change The magnolia-andmauve colour scheme had to go, and I was itching to revamp the mahogany fireplace in the living room.

How I made it my own Every room has a slightly different feel, from monochrome, to French shabby chic. But there’s a green theme that runs through every room.
My favourite part The guest bedroom probably reflects me best. It’s quite eclectic and features herons, which I’m slightly obsessed with!

My story… Since I was a little girl, I always wanted to live in a characterful white house with green shutters, and now I am! I was heavily pregnant with our second son when we sold our three-storey townhouse just a few streets away. We wanted a bigger garden for the kids and five bedrooms so my husband Daniel could work from home. We saw this house early on – the garden was overgrown, there was no furniture and the kitchen was a funny shape. But we kept on coming back to it. I was more enthusiastic about the house than Daniel, so I convinced him by Photoshopping the kitchendiner! I incorporated a seating booth to make use of an awkward nook and added a sitting area by the French doors. With a toddler and a baby on the way, we weren’t up for a major project, so we have mainly made cosmetic changes. Our priority was landscaping the garden as it had a sheer 6ft drop. Now the garden is on two levels connected by steps and a park slide for the kids. When it came to the interior, the first thing we did was redecorate the boys’ bedrooms and, since our baby was born in January, we’ve gradually worked our way around the rest of the house. My style is eclectic-modern-bohemian while Daniel is more of a minimalist, which means he doesn’t always appreciate the charity shop finds I bring home. We’ve had a few DIY disasters along the way, like hitting pipes and getting squirted in the face with water, so I do occasionally call in a tradesperson to pick up where I’ve left off. In previous years we would visit family for Christmas, but now we have children we love spending Christmas in our home. 40 homestylemag.co.uk

Expert advice Tile a fireplace Give your fireplace a facelift with on-trend tiles O Use a chisel to remove the
existing tiles, then create a smooth surface for the new tiles using a hand sander. Remove any loose debris and clean with a sponge. O Measure the width of the
fire surround and mark the midpoint with a vertical chalk line. Apply your mixed mortar to small sections at a time so it doesn’t dry out and leave grooved ridges with a trowel to ensure the tiles adhere well. Quarter-inch tile spacers will create even gaps. For a smooth finish you will need to cut some
of the edge tiles and the final row with a wet saw fitted with a diamond cutting blade. O Once the tiles have set, remove the spacers and wipe with a sponge. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove debris from the gaps. Apply grout to the joints in small sections and when you’ve finished wipe over with a wet sponge to remove residue. To neaten the hearth, cut a length of moulding to fit along the edges. O On a tight budget? Try tile stickers instead. Decoriia Studio on Etsy has Art Deco-style faux copper and marble designs from £6.77 for 12, and Snazzy Decal has gorgeous heritage designs from £12.65. ‘The fireplace was a horrible mahogany colour, so I painted it the same shade as the walls then used Rub’N Buff to pick out gold highlights,’ says Lianne. The mistletoe garland is from Homebase aand the industrial window mirror is w ffrom Cox & Cox
Family room ‘The starting point in here was the th he Slim Aarons swimming pool print, which inspired the New England Hamptons-style wall stripes. I used masking tape and painted the stripes the night before I was due for a C-section! The large armoire was an accident. When we moved in it wouldn’t fit upstairs so the removal men left it in here. It was originally dark brown, which looked too heavy for the room, so I painted it green. It has worked out really well as the armoire is now used as a big toy cupboard for the kids and this room gets used all day.’
‘Although the kitchen décor is neutral, my collections of glassware and crockery are colourful, so I bought the Wayfair rug to tie everything together,’ says Lianne. The farmhouse table is from an antique shop and the green curtains are Next Dec 2019 / Jan 2020 41

The Cox & Cox bedspread and cushions from Dunelm and Next work well with the existing blush pink walls. ‘My favourite item is the cheeky pin-up girl print,’ says Lianne
Kitchen ‘This is the room I’ve done the least to. It had been extended not long before we bought the house so we were lucky to inherit a nice neutral space – we even kept the wall colour. I’ve added pops of colour with accessories and a new blind from Blinds2Go. If I’d chosen the kitchen I would have opted for darker units to contrast with the white marble worktops, but after living with it I now like the calm neutral palette as it creates a lovely mood. There’s usually a big train track on the floor as you enter the room, so next year we’d like to square off this space with an extension. The play area will become a dining space and the current dining room will become a seating area.’ Dec 2019 / JJan 2020 43 D
‘The headboard was originally an Indian screen and the bedside lamp was from my dad’s former furniture shop, Posh in Alderley Edge,’ says Lianne. ‘It was black with an Oriental shade but I upcycled it.’ The Heron cushion is from Next
‘My style has definitely become more eclectic as a result of going to charity shops and car boot sales’ 44 homestylemag.co.uk
Guest bedroom ‘This room is an eclectic mix of Oriental, Indian and French. I already had the headboard which was made from a folding Indian screen. It was brown but I transformed it with chalk paint. I then found a paint colour called Emerald Glade by Dulux to match the green bombe chest from Next, and it also picked out the colour in the Chinoiserie curtains from Society6. In our previous home, the spare bedroom was also my dressing room, so I already had lots of feminine accessories. It’s a lovely room for when my husband’s family visit from Surrey.’
Inspiring homes ‘I’m always drawn to herons so when a friend sent me a link to this picture from Tin Design, I had to have it,’ says Lianne
Wall-mounted baskets from HomeSense and monochrome accessories, such as towels from H&M and a bathmat from Trouva, have elevated the neutral bathroom and given it a modern, boho edge
Bathroom ‘Although we eventually want to change the bathroom, the existing suite is quite new so all we’ve done is re-paint the mauve walls and add accessories. I originally wanted a full wall of baskets but in the end I just put up a couple. I love the big vase on the floor, a charity shop find, as I’ve modernised it by painting on black dashes. If I was starting the bathroom from scratch, I’d have a freestanding roll-top bath and more colour with gold herringbone tiles, but it works just fine for now.’
What I learned... O Rub’N Buff is a handy little product to add antique gold highlights. I’ve tried using it on everything, even the plastic stands of my globes. A tiny tube goes a long way! O I love miniature things so I bought a doll’s house as a creative outlet for my ideas (@bighouseminihouse on Instagram). If I ever want to change something in our house, I try it out on my doll’s house first.
Lianne backed the interior of the cabinet with Angel Strawbridge wallpaper from Wallpaper Direct. The crockery is from The Pound Shop and the cane chair was a Facebook Market find for £15
O Re-loved items, such as charity shop finds, add character to a house. And I discovered, while breastfeeding, that you can get great eBay bargains at crazy hours of the night.

Enlarge the stocking template at homestylemag.co.uk to your desired size and print on paper. Alternatively, draw out a stocking shape by hand. Fold the fleece fabric in half. Pin the template on top and cut out two stocking pieces at the same time. Remove the template. Re-pin the two stocking pieces together, right sides facing, and sew around the sides and bottom, leaving the top edge and a few centimetres at the top of each side open. Turn the stocking right side out, and iron it flat. Cut a decorative edge into the top, fold it over and iron it flat again. Make enough pompoms to cover one side of the stocking, using a variety of colours and sizes. Once you’re happy with the arrangement, stick the pompoms in place using fabric glue, and then leave to dry.

Don’t have a sewing machine? Stitch the seam by hand, or use fabric glue (leave it to dry before turning right side out).

Copper wine rack House your festive tipples in this stylish stand made from on-trend metallics
Style idea
Top Tip After applying the epoxy resin, twist the pipe once or twice within the joint to ensure it spreads evenly over both surfaces and creates a solid bond.

Wednesbury copper pipe, 15mm x 3m, £6.89; Yorkshire copper solder ring equal 90° elbows, 15mm, £3.72 for five; Yorkshire copper solder ring equal tees, 15mm, £6.77 for five, all Screwfix
Upcycling challenge Assembling this industrial-style wine rack is so much easier than you might think – a quick twist cuts the pipes to length and then you just glue them together! Why not make one as a gift for a wine lover?
Takes 3 hours You will need 4 Two 2m lengths of copper pipe 4 Tape measure 4 Marker 4 15mm pipe cutter 4 Twelve 15mm copper solder ring elbows 4 Four 15mm copper equal tees 4 Epoxy resin 4 Strong fabric 4 Scissors 4 Sewing machine 4 Thread 4 Iron 4 Fabric glue 4 Sturdy needle
1
Begin by marking out the lengths of pipe you’ll need to construct the frame. These will be: six 11cm lengths, eight 24cm lengths and four 32cm lengths (see pic A). Line up each mark with the blade in the pipe cutter and twist it to cut (see pic B). Once they’re cut, separate the pipe lengths by size so they don’t get mixed up. Download and print out the wine rack diagram from homestylemag.co.uk. Use the diagram to construct the frame but

A
just place the joints onto the pipes for now, don’t glue them together yet. Once you’re sure that the construction is correct, use a small blob of epoxy resin inside the edge of each joint to hold the frame together firmly. The resin should set in around 10 minutes, so work carefully and leave each joint to dry as you go to ensure you get a strong finish (see pic C). While frame is setting, create the fabric sling that will hold the bottles. Cut a 64cm x 110cm rectangle of fabric and fold it in half to make it 32cm x 110cm. Stitch around the three open edges, leaving a 1cm seam allowance and a 10cm gap in the seam (see pic D). Turn out through the gap, stitch the gap closed, then press it flat with an iron. To attach the sling, fold one short edge of the fabric back on itself by 4cm and loop it over one of the outer struts of the frame. Use a dab of glue to fasten it in place, then hand stitch the loop shut. Drape the fabric over two inner struts and fasten in the same way, ensuring three slings are the same size. Fold end of sling over last strut and then stitch in place.

Flower power
Perfect as a stocking filler for interiors fans, this fun little game contains postcards depicting different room styles. Are you contemporary, coastal or boho? Play to find out! Priced at £25, interiordesigntoolkit.com
Bold large-scale florals are taking the limelight in interiors. So, when Graham & Brown announced its Wallpaper of the Year 2020 as Bloomsbury Neo Mint, we were instantly in love. It celebrates the Bloomsbury Set – a group of 20th-century intellectuals, philosophers, artists and friends who lived and worked in this area and were united by the belief that fine art should inhabit everyday spaces. In keeping with such a philosophy, Graham & Brown have produced this striking English-countryside-inspired wallpaper. It’s filled with a fabulous array of flowers, insects and foliage, and backed in a soft green hue – perfect for pastel colour schemes.
DO IT YOURSELF Why not adorn your door with a handmade wreath this Christmas? Add real or faux berries, extra foliage and some seasonal sparkle to this classic artificial wreath. Get it at Dobbies, priced £3.99.
Table triumph Goodbye crackers and hello homemade table favours. This 10cm gift box is just 95p. Simply add your unique trims, a nametag and a small gift. Find it at Paper Tree.

At HomeStyle HQ, we think flowers make a home, whether they are real or faux. And if you agree, Paper Flower Art by Jessie Chui (GMC Publications, £25) is definitely the book for you. In this inspirational title, Jessie shows how to create realistic, everlasting paper flowers and foliage for bouquets, buttonholes and table displays. Step-by-step photos and detailed instructions reveal how to make the flowers and stems, while there is also a section on the art of flower arranging, including considerations such as colour, shape and texture. So, whether you’re looking to create a floral display for Christmas, an all-important wedding or any other occasion, this will steer you right.
LATEST RELEASE Dulux has revealed its Colour of the Year for 2020, and we think it’s divine. Tranquil Dawn is a natural, soft green, which can work with so many colour schemes and styles – from contemporary to traditional. Selected by a panel of design experts to ‘embody the nation’s mood as we approach a new decade,’ it is said to ‘reflect a growing desire to understand what it is to be human at a time when advances in technology are making us feel increasingly disconnected from each other.’ It has four supporting palettes, which show how Tranquil Dawn can be used to create calm, meditative spaces in our homes – just what we need for the year ahead! £29.16 for 2.5L flat matt emulsion (dulux.co.uk). Why you’ll
love this look O Have fun with a tree that’s pink or white – ice-cream coloured decorations will look eye-catching on it. O Gold accessories look great with pastels, they add a new dimension and brighten the colour palette. O Although this could be a ‘summery’ look, you can make it cosy by choosing crushed velvet curtains, a faux fur rug and tactile cushions.

Why you’ll
love this look O Velvet, with its luxurious texture, is the main fabric in this trend. Look out for velvet cushions, sofas and chairs. Welcome
to my home A bit about me I’m Rebecca Norwood and I live here with my husband Patrick, our two daughters and our cat.
‘Our style is country cottage with a modern twist – a look that naturally grew as we started to decorate the house’
Where I live Our home is a threebedroom 18th-century cottage in Derbyshire. We’ve lived here for three years.
What I wanted to change It felt dark, especially the poky kitchen, so opening up this space was a high priority.
How I made it my own
Feature Karen Wilson Photos Katie Lee
The house’s original features definitely inspired the look, so we opted for a neutral palette that wouldn’t overpower these elements. H&M Home, IKEA and Desenio are my go-to stores.
My favourite part The beams and brick fireplaces are top of my list. Having them sandblasted has made them the central focus of each room.
The original Filled with 18th-century character, Rebecca and Patrick 84 homestylemag.co.uk
Inspiring homes
‘Our best bargain in the house was the tile stickers from eBay on our original kitchen fireplace,’ says Rebecca. ‘They were so much cheaper than getting new tiles.’ The paper bell garland and wreath are from Wilko
features inspired us Norwood’s home is the perfect place to cosy up at Christmas Dec 2019 / Jan 2020 85
‘After looking at a few different suppliers, we felt IKEA provided the most stylish designs for our budget and we have experience of fitting its kitchens from our previous house,’ says Rebecca, who picked a retro-style fridge from Next
‘The woodblock worktops gave the kitchen a country feel, with the grey adding a modern twist,’ says Rebecca. ‘The shelf makes the space feel less enclosed.’ Etsy has similar Prosecco signs and the tea towel is from TK Maxx
My story... Our first home was a 1930s semi near Nottingham, but when we decided to have a family we thought it was time to move to a quiet village. We spotted a lovely house in south Derbyshire and fell in love with the location, but the property was completely out of our budget. We soon stumbled across another contender though: a three-bedroom 18th-century cottage with bags of character. It was really dated, but we had a good feeling about it and could see the potential. We particularly loved all its original features. It’s taken us around three years to renovate the cottage, as we did loads of the work ourselves. It was originally two houses so, for the most part, we could live in one half while we renovated the other. Every room needed re-plastering and new flooring. When we first moved in, it had a separate kitchen and dining room, but we knocked this through. We also turned the downstairs shower into a utility room, put in a new bathroom upstairs and added decking with a seating area at the rear. Old properties can definitely be hard to maintain, so I think our next project would involve building a house from scratch. Even though this place is a country cottage with a modern twist, my dream home would probably be modern with a country feel. The small windows here make it quite dark, so I’d love a place with big floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors. For now though, we absolutely love living here. We just need a few more trinkets and accessories to dress the space, and maybe some clever storage solutions for things like shoes and toys. 86 homestylemag.co.uk
‘Although we got professionals in to knock through the kitchen/ diner and sandblast the beams, we’ve done everything else ourselves’
Inspiring homes ‘The old pipes in the house had been painted numerous times over the years, so we replaced them with copper ones,’ says Rebecca. ‘I love how the earthy tones fit with the natural oak used throughout the rest of the house.’ The copper wall light is by Ocean Lighting and the wreath is from Wreaths by Design
Making Create a paper wreath on page 91
The front door opens directly into the dining area/kitchen, so Rebeccaa and Patrick wanted this space to make a big impact. ‘The large middle beam is rough and natural looking,’ says Rebecca. ‘It adds so much character to the room.’ For a similar wine rack, try the Corsi by Bramley Cottage at Wayfair
‘We found this console table in an antiques shop and added baskets from IKEA,’ says Rebecca. ‘They’re handy for fruit and veg.’ The star tea light holder is from House of Fraser

O If there are any areas of dampness, these need to be investigated and fixed before you begin, as it can lead to rot or termite infestation. Any woodworm holes are likely to be historic, but if in doubt, call in an expert. O There are several options for removing old paint or varnish and returning old wooden beams to their natural state. Sandblasting is one way, but it can be messy and there’s a risk of damaging the wood. Soda blasting (using sodium bicarbonate) is a gentler option. There are also companies that offer an eco-friendly process,

beeswax with a soft cloth to create a protective layer, enhance the beauty of the wood and show off the grain. Avoid linseed oil as it tends to remain sticky and can attract dust and dirt. Osmo Polyx Oil, Raw is a good option for a natural look, or make your own polish by putting some beeswax into a jam jar and covering it with turpentine, leaving it overnight, then shaking it so everything mixes together. O You may need to re-apply
the oil or beeswax every two to three years to maintain the seal. Avoid using cleaning products with harsh chemicals like bleach and chlorine, which can damage the wood too.
Inspiring homes
‘Since moving into our cottage, we’ve always spent Christmas Day at home with family, as this house was made for cosy get togethers,’ says Rebecca
Living room ‘We felt that the beams and fireplace were the main focus points in this room, so we kept things simple and just replastered the walls and changed the floors to complement the natural materials. I’d describe our style as country cottage with a modern twist – a look that naturally grew as we started to decorate the house. Although it could do with some more accessories and home furnishings – those things can come in time. This room is so cosy at Christmas. I like dressing it with simple muted tones, such as pale green and white with splashes of gold and silver. My new green velvet sofa is the perfect spot to enjoy a mulled wine by the fire while watching a Christmassy film.’
‘We particularly loved all the original features such as the beams and fireplaces’ Dec 2019 / Jan 2020 89
A dark feature wall, painted in Railings by Farrow & Ball, makes the grey upholstered bed from Happy Beds stand out. Pink accessories, like the bedspread from Made, bring a soft, romantic feel
‘The soft pink in the bedroom is striking and very different to the rest of the house’
‘The cottage-style doors were here when we moved in,’ says Rebecca. She added natureinspired prints from Desenio above the IKEA bedside table
Master bedroom m ‘When we first moved in, our ur bedroom was a bit of a state with yellow wallpaper and an old jutelike carpet. The ceiling was old lath and plaster, which was heavily bowing, while the windows were old single-pane glass with rotten frames. We liked the size and period features though, especially the chimney breast and fireplace. Exposing the old brick was a big job as it involved stripping back the plaster with hammer chisels, angle grinders and acid wash. Then we had the other walls replastered, boarded the ceiling and added chic modern shutters to the newly double-glazed windows to complete the look. As the rest of the house is quite neutral, we felt we had licence to experiment in terms of colour, so went with a black, grey, pink and white colour scheme.’ 90 homestylemag.co.uk
‘The mirror was originally silver but I sprayed it gold to give it a more antique look,’ says Rebecca, ‘and the pink chair is from Cult Furniture’
Inspiring homes Bathroom ‘The old bathroom looked like it had last been updated in the 90s and we didn’t like the vinyl floor or the cream and blue decorative tiles. As it’s a small space, we were extremely limited with the layout options. We ripped out the old bathroom, tiled the walls and floor, and installed the new suite ourselves with a bit of help from a plumber who moved some pipes. My favourite part is the free-standing bath. We particularly like how its design means it can fit seamlessly into the corner of the room, making it more practical for a small bathroom than a traditional version.’
The bathroom was very old fashioned, so we chose a vintage-style bath from Victoria Plum with a quirky tiled floor from Tons of Tiles to add some interest,’ says Rebecca. The print on the windowsill is from Chelsea Prints
What I learned... O When renovating, labour is the major cost so if you can do some of the work yourself – such as painting and tiling – you’ll save a lot of money. My husband has the mentality that you can do anything if you put your mind to it, and often watches YouTube tutorials. Although we called professionals in to knock through the kitchen/diner and sandblast the beams, we’ve done everything else ourselves. O Upcycle and restore where you can. For instance, our utility room is made up of our old kitchen cabinets and the stove in the dining area was restored with specialist paint.
Rebecca has dressed DIY shelves with letter candles from Asda and accessories found in antiques shops
O Stay true to your personal style and choose items you actually like, rather than what you think you should like, or whatever is the latest trend.

Paper wreath Follow Rebecca’s lead and make a simple wreath decoration in traditional Christmas colours to adorn a door You will need Instead of using plain red, punch the berries for your wreath from glitter card for an eyecatching sparkly finish.
4 Paper or thin card in greens, red and white 4 Pencil 4 Scissors 4 Scoring tool 4 PVA glue 4 Cocktail stick 4 Hot glue 4 Hole punch 4 12in rattan wreath
1
Download and print the paper wreath templates from homestylemag.co.uk. Draw around the holly templates onto the back of some green paper in one or two shades and cut out. To speed up the process, concertina the paper and cut out multiple leaves at once. Repeat with the mistletoe template on light green paper, and some berry sprigs on red paper. The berries themselves are the holes – or chads – made by a standard office hole punch. Score down the centre of each of the holly leaves and fold them inwards over the score line. Apply a little PVA glue to the tips of the red sprigs – use a cocktail stick as they are tiny. Stick on the red berries and leave them to dry. Apply a little hot glue to the backs of the holly leaves and dot them around the rattan wreath. Affix the mistletoe sprigs with hot glue. Intersperse them among the leaves and leave to dry. Finally, dot the berry sprigs with hot glue. Place the berries around the wreath and allow to dry. Your wreath is now ready to hang up!

Living room makeover ‘The rich colours of Tretchikoff’s iconic Green Lady were the starting point for the room scheme. My mum bought the print for Lee for Christmas from King & McGaw and it’s his pride and joy’
Bright colours and textures rule in our home With a kitsch Fifties print as inspiration, Charlie McSherry and her partner Lee Warriner knew they could go for bold
My room... My problem living room
I’m Charlie McSherry, a midwife, and I live with my partner, Lee Warriner, in our three-bedroom Victorian terrace in Kingston-upon-Hull.
How I made it work We painted the whole room in navy blue, then chose sumptuous velvet big-ticket items in jewel colours, added gold and metallic vintage accessories and mixed it up with Lee’s retro furniture.

We both lead busy lives, so sitting on the sofa, with the fire roaring in the evening, is the only place I want to be. We chose a sofa without loose cushions so that we wouldn’t have to plump them up all the time. The dark walls are cosy at night and though the colour changes in the daylight, it still feels warm and welcoming. Dec 2019 / Jan 2020 99
Feature and styling Lisa Moses Photos Katie-Jane Watson
A bit about me
The room had no personality and although the walls and floor were sound and needed only cosmetic work, it felt unloved. But it was a good size and had great light, and because it was all painted white, it felt like the perfect blank canvas.
Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home Go for an eclectic mix Sitting a scalloped Art Deco-style armchair next to an original Sixties side table atop a cowhide rug in a Victorian house really shouldn’t work. But by choosing to stick to a bold but simple colour palette of just two hero colours, and avoiding too much pattern, Charlie and Lee have pulled the look together to create a space that feels unique and sophisticated.
Embrace the dark ‘We painted the whole wall, including the picture rails and skirting boards, in the same Hague Blue paint by Farrow & Ball. It adds an edge to the room and creates a dramatic backdrop for the strong colours and textures we’ve chosen. We were a worried that it might feel a bit enclosed but the ceilings are high, so it has made the room cosy.’
Go for gold Metallic accents, particularly golds or coppers, will bring a warm glow to your room, bounce light around the space and add a touch of glamour. These glossy surfaces work well with dark shades. A gold-framed mirror or hammered gold pendant lamp can become a focal point for the look, or hunt in charity shops for brass candleholders or a vintage vase with goldpainted decorations. 100 homestylemag.co.uk
Style idea Store goodlooking logs on the hearth
Living room makeover ‘The mirror was from Wayfair and I love that it reflects the Green Lady so she can be seen from all angles. The vase belonged to Lee’s Nana and fits in perfectly with the look, and we found the candleholders in the loft when we moved in’
‘With shades of gold and blue as the main colours, the monkey cushion, £30 from HomeSense, was the accent’
My experience…
‘Lee loves all things retro and I like to invest in a bit of luxury’
Having previously rented a gloomy cottage, when we saw the light flooding through the bay window here, we knew this place was for us. We loved the Victorian features, particularly the fireplace with the original blue tiles. We’d felt restricted in our old home, but here we could create something that reflected our styles – I like colour, texture and luxury and Lee likes retro. The whole house was painted white so we just needed to think about the décor and Lee’s Green Lady painting, by Tretchikoff, was our starting point. I wanted navy walls but the paint samples looked almost black against the white and our friends were saying it would be too dark. We trusted our instincts but knew the room would need something bright and bold too. The decorating took a week and then, to ensure that any new buys would work with Lee’s vintage collection, we spent time finding the accessories to finish off the room. We’d seen an old Chesterfield on a trip to Barcelona so when we saw this sofa from Willow & Hall, although expensive, we knew it was the ‘wow’ piece we needed, and felt it would age well and be a good investment. We’ve picked out the jewel colours from the painting with the rest of our accessories and mixing the old and new means we’ve created a look that is unique to us.

Muted shades create a sense of calm Wanting a tranquil space to unwind in, Lauren Winter has used a gentle palette of blush pink, off-white and green
My room... My problem bathroom
A bit about me I’m Lauren Winter, a secondary school teacher. I live with my husband, Freddie, and our Boston Terrier, Walter, in a four-bedroom Victorian semi-detached house in Leicestershire, which we bought in 2016.
The previous bathroom was dated in appearance and extremely cold in winter. After carrying out a kitchen extension downstairs, the installation of a new steel support unfortunately caused cracks to appear in the bathroom, so it looked worse than ever.
How I made it work Under-floor heating and a new sash window mean it’s now toasty warm! I decided to go with a vintage scheme for the decor, and quirky features, such as the pink bath and upcycled vanity unit, give the room plenty of character that is in keeping with the property’s age.
My favourite part
Before 104 homestylemag.co.uk
The painted pink bath is definitely my favourite feature of the new bathroom. I had always had my heart set on having a roll top and I am very glad I went bold with the colour, as it gives the whole room a focal point.
Bathroom makeover Crackle-glaze metro tiles line the shower area, adding a subtle rustic texture. Lauren gathered inspiration through homes magazines, as well as via Instagram, where she has a dedicated interiors account, @lavenderandbayhome
Tongue-and-groove wood panelling enhances the country bathroom scheme. Lauren has painted the panels in Farrow & Ball’s Strong White to offer a neutral backdrop to the room and allow the pink bath to take centre stage
‘The previous bathroom was so cold – snow would actually come in through the gaps around the window frame!’

A handy bath tidy is the perfect place to store bath-time essentials, and its natural finish ties in with the wood-effect flooring for a classic look

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home Try your hand at DIY Lauren was keen to have a coloured bath and decided to paint it herself to keep costs down. ‘I was nervous at the start, but watched a few online video tutorials to pick up tips’, she explains. ‘Once I felt confident enough to begin, I lightly sanded the surface of the bath before giving it two coats of primer and then three coats of pink eggshell paint. It was actually a lot easier than I’d first thought!’
‘I picked up the vanity unit for £20 in an antiques shop and upcycled it with paint and new handles’
Mix and match materials Panelling is well suited to Victorian properties and Lauren has used this classic wall covering at picture-rail height to emphasise the high ceilings. ‘I decided to run the crackle-glaze metro tiles behind the shower and along the back wall to make them more of a feature’, she says. ‘They offer a contrast to the wooden panels, but their similar colouring allows them to sit side by side.’
Keep it serene with storage As with any bathroom, incorporating storage is a key part of the design. ‘I didn’t want it to feel cluttered, especially because it’s a small space’, says Lauren. ‘I sourced a chest of drawers to keep towels and toiletries in order, and the wallmounted shelf unit with hooks is used for items that are needed on a more frequent basis.’ 106 homestylemag.co.uk
Lauren sourced the chest of drawers for £20 in an antiques shop and gave it a new lease of life with paint and new handles. Her plumber then cut out holes for the pipework and attached the countertop basin to create a bespoke vanity unit
Bathroom makeover Traditional fixtures and fittings, such as the bath mixer taps and exposed-rail shower, give Lauren’s bathroom a timeless appeal that complements her Victorian property
My experience… While Freddie and I had long planned on renovating the bathroom, as the mosaic tiling felt dated and the room lacked any real character, we had to bring the timeframe forward after a new steel beam installed in the kitchen below resulted in settlement cracks that spread into the bathroom. We decided not to alter the layout, as it’s not the largest of rooms and we wouldn’t have to cover the cost of moving the plumbing. Because of the settlement damage, we had to strip the bathroom back to bare brick and have this re-pointed before it could be re-plastered. We also had to remove the old sash window, as it let in terrible draughts in the winter – so much so, that snow would actually come in through the gaps around the wooden frame! As a luxury, we installed under-floor heating to help warm up the room. Stepping onto the heated tiles for the first time was definitely a highlight of the project, and money well spent! When it came to the interior style of the space, I wanted to create a calm and classic room, with a few quirky touches, such as the pink bath and a mixture of wall coverings. The colour palette sets a relaxing scene for an evening soak, and I like to think we’ve reinstated some charm and period character.

We’ve given our home an industrial loft vibe. We removed our gas fire and surround, but doing so took some of the surrounding plaster off, which gave us the idea of having the bricks exposed. It took my husband 10 days to remove all the plaster, then clean up the bricks and seal them. But we’re so pleased with the finished result. The large print that hangs next to the chimney is from Ink & Drop. @skullanddecor

Vintage treasures
Going dotty We are in the process of redecorating our home, starting in our daughter’s bedroom. I have gone for an eclectic boho style. I love that this space can be used as a vanity area or desk, so it is practical as well as stylish. I like to mix modern and vintage as well as upcycling furniture. This stool was in my childhood bedroom, but with a little makeover it now fits perfectly into one very happy girl’s new space! @boho_home_
I’ve been collecting vintage homewares for longer than I can remember. My first piece was an enamel kitchen set I bought in a Paris flea market and it’s still in my kitchen. For me, vintage is all about owning pieces that someone loved in the past. I give those pieces a new home where they’ll be treasured all over again. @lisa_loves_vintage

Serves 14 Ingredients 4 100g black treacle 4 100g golden syrup 4 250g light brown muscovado sugar 4 500g unsalted butter 4 4 medium eggs 4 250ml milk 4 400g plain flour 4 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 4 2 tsp ground ginger 4 2 tsp cinnamon 4 1 tsp allspice 4 ¼ tsp nutmeg 4 1 lemon, zested 4 1 vanilla pod, halved and seeds scraped out 4 500g icing sugar, sifted 4 Handful each of fresh herbs like rosemary, thyme and sage 4 100g cranberries 4 2 tbsp granulated sugar
Method
1
Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C Fan/Gas Mark 4. Grease and line the base and sides of two 20cm round cake tins with non-stick baking paper. In a large pan set over a medium heat, melt the treacle, syrup, muscovado sugar and 250g butter, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Transfer to a bowl and set aside to cool for 10 mins.
2
Beat the eggs and milk together in a mixing bowl using an electric whisk. Beat in the cooled syrup, then sift over the flour, bicarbonate of soda, ginger, cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg and fold in, along with the zest, until just combined. Divide the mixture equally between the prepared cake tins. Bake for 20-25 mins, until risen and a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tins for 10 mins, before turning out on to wire racks to cool completely. To make the buttercream, beat 250g butter and the vanilla seeds together in a bowl. Gradually add the icing sugar, beating until pale and fluffy, then set aside. Using a serrated knife, cut the cake sponges in half horizontally to make four equal layers. Sandwich the sponges together with the buttercream, then spread the top of the cake with a slightly thicker layer to cover. Thinly spread the remaining buttercream around the sides, scraping off the excess with a palette knife to achieve a 'naked’ look. To make a decorative wreath, weave the fresh herbs in a circle and arrange on top of the cake. Rinse the cranberries, then roll in the sugar. Arrange in and around the wreath.

IN CONVERSATION:
Sofie Hepworth We speak to Instagram interiors influencer @threeboysandapinkbath How did it all begin? I was a latecomer to interiors. Until the age of 33 I had worked in HR recruitment and as a vice president at Barclays, but I needed a creative outlet. When I bought a dilapidated Edwardian house in 2014, my obsession began. I also fell pregnant and, uninspired by the nursing chairs in the UK, set up my brand, Baby Grey. I launched Three Boys and a Pink Bath in December 2017, initially to share my renovation journey, but I soon spotted the opportunity for it to become part of my business and brand.
Describe a typical day
Create a bold and personal look like Sofie
In the mornings, it’s normal business activities – dealing with shipments, ordering fabrics and marketing. In the afternoons, I focus on the creative aspects – looking at my newest product designs, shooting a campaign, creating moodboards, or wallpapering a ceiling.

130 homestylemag.co.uk
Who are you stalking on Instagram? I’m @teamtonkin and @enter_ my_attic obsessed, probably because they are both mustard and pink lovers and blend white Scandi style with bold colours.
What is currently on your bedside table? There’s a John Grisham I’ve been trying to finish for months. And I recommend The Multi-Hyphen Method by Emma Gannon about women juggling multiple freelance hats.
Who would you swap homes with and why? @manwithahammer – the Georgian pile he’s bought is one of the most beautiful buildings I have ever seen! For a movestraight-in house, Nicki’s of @andthentheywentwild.
What is your proudest career moment?
I studied communication and new media at university after dropping out of psychology (a big regret). Ironically, 13 years after studying a course I never used, I have an e-commerce business and a career in new media. I can also say the alphabet backwards at high speed!
Three months after launching Baby Grey we won an award for Best Kids’ Interior Product, beaten only by Jools Oliver for Little Bird. Last month I was voted London’s Best Amateur Interior Designer by the oneand-only Sophie Robinson. With no formal training I describe myself as a businesswoman, so to get recognition for product and interior design is something I am truly humbled by.
Describe your style
How’s 2020 looking?
I was once described as Scandi luxe, with an occasional twist. I love white and colour in equal measure and my style is evolving as my confidence grows, but the words that spring to mind are fresh, fun, clean lines and progressively experimental!
For more from Sofie, visit @threeboysandapinkbath
My main goals are to launch my newest product – a premium design-led, plastic-free baby product – and to continue cementing myself as a leading interior content creator.
