Fact Sheet: UK action to counter extremism and terrorism
The Threat: Daesh and other extremists threaten the UK and British people. In June 2015, 31 Britons were killed by terrorists in Tunisia. In the UK, the police and security services have stopped at least 7 different attacks since November 2014.
Military action against Daesh in Iraq & Syria: The UK has conducted over 1600 aerial missions against Daesh targets since bombing began in Iraq in September 2014 and in Syria in December 2015.
Countering extremist ideology: On 19 October, the Prime Minister Cameron launched the UK’s counter-extremism strategy. He said that terrorism is a symptom but ideology is the cause. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/counter-extremismstrategy
Prime Minister Cameron described the fight against Islamist extremism as “one of the great struggles of our generation”. He was said the strategy will tackle extremism in all its forms, including neo-Nazism and Islamophobia.
New powers against extremists: The UK is introducing powers to ban extremist organisations; to restrict the activities of the dangerous extremist individuals; to restrict premises used to support extremism; to suspend radio services that broadcast extremist content, as we do for TV.
Terrorist arrests: Between March 2014 and March 2015, the UK arrested 299 people for terrorism-related offences, and a total of 800 since 2010.
Terrorist convictions: 466 people were convicted for terrorism-related offences between 11 September 2001 and 31 March 2015.
Deportations and exclusions: The UK deported extremists such as Abu Hamza and Abu Qatada. We have revoked British citizenship from 9 people since August 2013 and removed 30 passports since April 2013. Over 140 hate preachers have been excluded from the UK since 2007.
Tackling extremism online: We have removed 79,000 pieces of terrorist and extremist online content since 2010.
