Young Enterprise The UK’s leading enterprise and financial education charity

Young Enterprise is the UK’s leading enterprise and financial education charity. We empower young people to develop the character and skills they need to succeed in work and in life.

WHY WE ARE HERE

What do we do?

There is a crisis in the UK. Youth unemployment is having a devastating impact on today’s young people – 750,000 are currently unemployed, while 70% of employers have difficulty finding the right candidates for entry level positions*. Schools are forced to focus on academic attainment, and many young people aren’t developing the skills they need for the future.

Prevention is better than cure. Our programmes offer a journey, from gaining knowledge through to developing skills and changing attitudes, arming young people with the confidence to aim high and the knowledge and skills to succeed.

We won’t stand for this. We work with young people before they become just another unemployment statistic and support them to develop the employability skills that employers demand, by delivering hands-on enterprise and financial education programmes in schools, colleges and universities.

From CV writing and interview preparation skills, to understanding how to manage money and even setting up and running a real business for a year, our programmes provide hands-on, practical learning in and out of the classroom.

I’ve just finished sixth form and have been offered a job with an online retailer. I realised at the final assessment day that I would have not been able to get this far without my Young Enterprise experience, as I was the youngest there by six years and one of the few without a degree.

How do we do it? Our programmes are delivered with the support of a network of 5,000 local, experienced business advisors, giving young people the chance to learn from a professional. We help educational centres develop links with their local business community, and have staff on hand to fully support our programmes.

How can you help? We’re a charity and rely on donations from our generous supporters to reach out to young people. You can help by giving your time, expertise or simply by donating. Today’s young people face an uncertain future. Each year we empower over 250,000 under 25s to realise their potential, but there are hundreds of thousands more who need our help. You can help us prevent youth unemployment and give young people the best possible chance in life.

Case Study: Kirsty Timm Kirsty, 17, from Yorkshire, took on the role of Sales Director in her school’s Company Programme. She overcame extreme shyness and a severe lack of confidence to set up her own murder mystery party business. Kirsty said: “I have always carried a fear that no one was interested in what I had to say and have always longed for more confidence and self-belief. Young Enterprise has given me belief in myself, I realised that I do have a voice and do make valid points and that there is no reason for me to avoid people.” She now holds regular murder mystery parties where clients are served a three course meal while a local acting group bring the plotline to life.

Kirsty said: “The experience has given me new found confidence. I feel determined to go far in life and will try not to let anything hold me back.”
