Introduction The Creek Indians are an interesting bunch. They played sports made art, and much more. As you open up the book and read, you’ll take a wonderful journey back in time, to when the Creek Indians breathed and slept. Facts about what they lived in, there sports, crafts, and what their clothing was like.
Arts and Crafts What were Creeks arts and crafts like? Creek Indians were known for their glazed pottery, American Indian baskets and wood carving. The move to Oklahoma, meant they wouldn’t be able to have some of the crafts they did, so they stuck to making bead work. And that’s what the Creek Indian crafts were like.
Clothing What were Creeks clothing like? Creek men wore leather leggings and breach cloths. The women wore skirts that wrapped around their waists, and also wore mantles, woven out of fiber, and deer skin. Creek men never really wore skirts, but both men and women wore moccasins on their feet. Later on, the Creek tribe added some style of European in their own way into clothing, like jackets, cloth blouses, and long skirts with decoration with ribbon applique. Unlike the Sioux, the Creeks did not wear war bonnets. Men usually shaved their hair into Mohawk sort of style, and sometimes they would wear a porcupine roach. Women used the design to put their long hair clipped onto the top of their head. And that’s what the Creeks clothing was like.
Sports and Fun Did Creek children play? Creek children do whatever kids do now-a-days, go to school, play with other people, and help around their houses. Many Creeks like to go on hunting and fishing trips with their father. Just like colonial children, Creek kids had less time to play, and had to do more chores in the past. They had beaded dolls, and had fun games to play with. A famous and most popular game adults, and teenager men played was called afvcketu. Many Creek mothers carried their babies in cradle boards on their backs, like Native Americans, traditionally did. And that’s what they did for fun.
Where Did Creeks Live Where did the creek tribe live? The creek tribe lived in single family houses, scattered into square villages. Creeks made houses of plaster and river cane that formed the walls, and thatched. Creeks made round shaped buildings for special ceremonies, and sometimes made ball fields and added benches for spectators. Some creek tribes had pailisides. In their villages to protect them from unwanted guest. Creeks lived In what is now called Alabama, and Georgia. They usually have as many as 400 to 600 people. Today creeks lived in normal houses, but that’s a different story. And that’s where the creek Indians lived.
My Life Story with Coner Kenway July 10th Village Oh, I be so mad I feel my face burn just because I am only 10, father said I can’t play afvcketu! He said I am too young. I peck at my leggings. I get up out of the grass beside my house, and head out into the woods. I walk down to the stream that I always play in, and jumped to the other side. There’s a log stump in the middle of the little island. I stood on the little stump, and looked around the little island until I saw a shimmering object. “Found it”, I announced to myself. I always kept a small afvcketu stick and ball made of sticks and I stuck a piece of broken mirror I got from my mom’s old mirror, on it, to deflect the sun, to see it in the shallow creek, tucked under the pebbles in the creek, so I could secretly play. I am so excited to play, for I have been stuck in school, and doing chores. Your friend, Coner Kenway July 12th Village (home) I am so happy but sad at the same time. I could almost cry. Jimmy Gale broke his leg on a hunting trip. My brother made a bet with Jake Gunter, and now he needs someone to fill in for Jake. He saw me in the playing and thought I had some skill!!!! Can’t wait for tomorrow. Your friend, Coner Kenway July 13th Afvcketu field I am about to play afvckedtu! Oh! I have to go! Ill tell you what happens after Im done.
Later………………………….. We won the afvcketu game! I could burst like a balloon with happiness! I write at the creek, sitting on the bumpy hard stump, practicing for another miracle. Your friend, Coner Kenway
My Life Story with Amaea Higiny January 6th Willingtons house I am staying at my friend’s house, for mine has burnt down in a forest fire last night. My father, mother, and I are fine, but very sad. I am kind of exited, for tomorrow we are building a new house. Your friend, Amaea Higiny January 7th Village I be so excited. Tomorrow the house be finished! Love, Amaea Higiny January15th I’ve been stuck doing chores, and sewing, I haven’t got any time to spend time in the new house, for it still it is being built. We lost time for a big rain storm hit us. I so badly just want to lay in a normal bed, for my family and I were kicked out of the willingtons house, for they have been running out of food. Your friend, Amaea Higiny January 17th New house! I be so excited! The house is finished, and dad has gone hunting for food. I guess everything works out in the end. Your friend, Amaea Higiny
