HE FOCUS OF THIS SERIES of workshops was to help young the offenders both at Brandvlei and Goodwood Corrections how to think positively and make use of creative tools that will contribute

towards their own personal development. It also created space for them to learn from their own mistakes and become more aware of whom they want to become in future. And the different themes used were based on individual rehabilitation of all the participants that have engaged in this 3 month behaviour modification program. In this issue we have allowed participants to look at their own emotions and learn to understand how they function in two different ways (positive and negative). In understanding negative behaviours, we then created awareness of how they express themselves through the type of Language used. We did several assignments; physical activities and paint as form of art therapy. Also used was brainstorming and group lesions that are based on human psychology. In addition, it helped the participants to become more self-motivated, self-disciplined and set their own positive goals. The participants also had learned how to contribute towards their own rehabilitation and to make use of positive resources inside the institutions. During the whole process of the program and 3 month time spend with them; I have observed that many of the participants regret what they did wrong to society.

Topic > COLOUR ME IN In this series of workshops the facilitator had made use of colour therapy, of which he then requested the participants choose only Aquarelle; water and koki pens. They then had to reflect on their personal lives and draw the outline of a person. Think what other people in their communities use tell them who they are and not what they really want to be. Write what people think of them on the outside and then use colours to paint the inside…..this time to tell people who they really are without saying the words. It was also a platform of self-expression. .

Topic > EMPATHY The participants were ask to connect with their inner persons threw a physical exercise and then use paint and koki pens to show remorse and demonstrate the feelings and emotions that led them to do the crime and the ne emotions that allow them to accept what was done wrong can become a learning to do better.

Topic > ME 2 YOU By using their creativity; participants were challenged to think outside the box and paint that perfect moment on a canvas with Acrylic paint; they were also requested to do so in a small group of four and discuss that incredible moment, combine ideas and paint it. The objective was to allow them to share their skills amongst each other.

Topic > OPEN BOOK Participants were challenged to openly discuss their lives and share short stories of themselves by making use of Acrylic paint and colours that can say how they feel and what they mean. They can also wind / storms and seasons to demonstrate.

Topic > OUR COMMON GOALS In this series of workshops the participants had to form small groups of five and brainstorm what they have in common with each other that can be used as a skill to develop inside prison. Also that they have to discuss positive attitudes that promote learning; and then focus on one picture and draw it with Aquarelle pastels and water .

Topic > SELF REFLECTION In this workshop the facilitator made use of a question quiz and creativity; of which he requested all participants to use Acrylic paint; pens and brushes to answer the 3 questions in writing and drawings. Their inputs must be positive as the questions were educational driven………
