NEW S OF T H E WORL D L EA DER IN ESS ENTIAL OI L S

FOUNDER’S MESSAGE

As convention is almost upon us, I am reminded of an interesting little bit of news that recently came to me. There seems to be concern that other network marketing companies are claiming that their source of oils is the same as ours, so they think they can lay claim to our Seed to Seal standard. What that says to me is that other companies think we are the best; and by claiming to share the same source, they think that makes them as good as us. I would have to investigate to see if this is true, but does it matter if one of our oils is sourced from the same supplier as for another oil company as well? As long as we have the best, that is the most important. Most growers and distillers produce 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-grade-quality oil, which has a lot to do with how long the plant material is distilled and at what temperature, as well as the quality of the water used. Although, we may be buying from the same supplier, we don’t know what grade of oil the other companies are buying. We know only what we are buying. Not many companies want to adhere to our standard because it is more complex and costs more money. If a company is about profit, you can be sure that quality is not its top priority. Highest quality and purity of oils really affects the financial bottom line. No other company can lay claim to our Seed to Seal process. We are the only company in the world that grows, harvests, distills, tests, and then bottles in our own manufacturing facility. If the plants are not being grown on one of our own farms, they are grown on partner farms or supplied under very strict regulations—and the oils are always tested. Just know that you have the best; and if people want to attach to our standard, they are only acknowledging that we are the world leader in essential oils.

March 3 we welcomed New Zealand into our Young Living family as the newest market! Our New Zealand members can now take advantage of Young Living’s products, promotions, and business opportunities. Our dedicated, enthusiastic members in “the Land of the Long White Cloud” have been working hard to create and nurture strong networks, and they are excited to continue sharing Young Living’s pure, authentic essential oils with everyone they know. The headquarters for New Zealand members is in Sydney, Australia; and these members now have access to the same distribution channels, commission payment process, operations, and compensation plan as our Australian members! We held a successful launch event to celebrate such a historical moment March 2–5. Young Living invited Silver members and above from both New Zealand and Australia to attend the event at the Skycity Auckland Convention Center in New Zealand to receive training and education and to celebrate this amazing announcement. This market opening emphasizes the global demand for our authentic, pure essential oils. We’re excited to see the market’s accomplishments through the months and years to come.

INTRODUCING THE WORLD CLASS QUALITY CONTROL TEAM The Seed to Seal® program is at the core of Young Living. Each of the three pillars—Sourcing, Science, and Standards—sets us apart. For the last three editions of The Essential Edge, we’ve focused on the Science pillar, with exclusive inside looks into the Research and Product Development teams. For the final installment of this Science series, we’re meeting the Quality Control team. “Quality Control is responsible for testing all products that come into Young Living,” explains Andy Giles, Director of Quality Control. “We test everything from raw materials to finished products.” The Quality Control team sees more than 100 samples in the lab every day and ensures that every product meets our standards, as well as the designated expiration date, both of which require advanced testing. The Quality Control team reports to Young Living’s Senior Director of Global Quality Paul Hansen, who in turn answers to our Chief Science Officer Dr. Mike Buch. The Quality Control team is staffed with talented scientists, support personnel, and leadership. Andy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Weber State University and has been working as a chemist for nine years. In his nearly five years at Young Living, he has doubled the size of the Quality Control team. Paul received his Master of Science degree in environmental chemistry from North Carolina State University and worked for 12 years as a research and analytical scientist. He has spent the past 10 years managing the various groups responsible for product quality. The Quality Control scientists bring a combined 165 years of laboratory experience to Young Living and are divided into two distinct groups: the microbiologists and the chemists. Both teams have members with more than 20 years of experience, as well as budding scientists who add new perspectives. Each scientist must hold at least a four-year science degree or the equivalent in work experience. Two team members are especially important to Quality Control: Gary and Mary Young. “The Youngs want to make sure that the quality of our products meets the standard they have, and it’s a high standard,” explains Andy. “They’ve been eager to invest the resources needed to make sure we maintain product quality. We’ve been able to keep the equipment up to date with those resources, which is important for ensuring high-quality products.” We are grateful for the capable scientists—from Research to Product Development to Quality Control—who uphold the Seed to Seal Science pillar and work hard to ensure the quality of our products.
