Winter Harvest 2013

Learn About Oils Like Never Before During This Year’s Winter Harvest

A special surprise awaits at the St. Maries farm this year: a high-resolution gas chromatograph that will give distributors the chance of a lifetime to analyze oils that they’ve helped harvest and distill. AT YOUNG LIVING we look forward with great anticipation to wintertime, when our balsam fir, blue spruce, Western red cedar, and pine trees are ready for harvesting and distilling. The Winter Harvest is a time of transformation, when we work together alongside D. Gary Young to distill the world’s highest quality essential oils in the pristine, rejuvenating forest setting of our Idaho farms. Registration to join this unforgettable experience is now open! From December 3–15 or January 7– February 2, you can become an integral part of the Seed to Seal® process for all

or part of the Winter Harvest at the Young Living farms in St. Maries and Highland Flats, Idaho. Immerse yourself in a variety of rewarding experiences, from harvesting the trees, to working with our eco-friendly horsedrawn teams, to helping distill the precious essential oils. With Gary and many of our leaders in attendance, the Winter Harvest is also an excellent time to learn from our founder and network with top distributors. Gary has a special surprise for those coming to the Winter Harvest. A highresolution gas chromatograph (GC) will be available for the immediate testing of essential oils distilled at the St. Maries distillery. This is an opportunity of a lifetime for all distributors coming to the harvest, giving them illuminating insight into the testing and bottling of the very oils being distilled during the Winter Harvest. Gary Young analyzes oils using the high-resolution gas chromatograph, The GC instrument, a machine distributors will use at this year’s Winter Harvest.

one of three normally housed in Young Living’s research and quality lab, will be set up for the volunteers to help analyze the essential oils that they help and distill from the harvest. The Agilent 6890N GC will be equipped with nonpolar and polar GC columns, each containing a unique interior “stationary phase” coating. These two GC columns separate the essential oil into different patterns to allow identification of numerous components that comprise each essential oil. The GC instrument will be operated by two experienced research scientists, who will demonstrate and train those who attend the Winter Harvest. Come experience Young Living’s Seed to Seal process—planting, harvesting, distilling, and quality testing—and witness Young Living’s dedicated efforts to remain the world leader in essential oils. Space is limited, so register as soon as possible! Visit youngliving.com to learn more. See you in Idaho!

What a year 2012 has been for Young Living and you! The company has changed; you have changed. I’ve heard from so many of you how by focusing on transforming your lives through Young Living, you are living better than ever before. How exhilarating! With success in achieving goals and experiencing transformation comes a renewed sense of belief—belief in one’s self, belief in principles, and belief in something bigger than the individual. The power to believe is astonishing. It is bred through a cumulative process of simple, day-to-day victories where we overcome obstacles and reach heights higher than we ever could have imagined. Action, then, is key to believing. So much of what we do or do not accomplish in life depends entirely on what we choose to act on. Each of us is an agent with the responsibility to act, not to be acted upon. Ours is the divine right to pursue with diligence happiness and freedom. It is only through a dedicated pursuit of reaching our potential that we are filled with the powerful, motivating belief that we can achieve anything we put our minds—and muscles—to achieving. What a tremendous responsibility we have to ourselves! A new year is quickly approaching. As you begin thinking about how you can continue your personal transformation, I challenge you, if you haven’t already, to truly begin to believe in yourself. Be an agent that acts; be somebody’s inspiration. The power to inspire resides in each of you! Young Living believes in you!

Long-lasting energy support* • Whole Ningxia wolfberries are traditionally used in China to support agility, longevity, and vitality* • Energises without the harmful effects caused by trendy drinks*

With cold winter weather quickly approaching for many Young Living members, we would like to remind you that low temperatures may affect NingXia Red® during shipping if you live in a cold climate. Low temperatures will not damage or freeze your essential oils, but they may change their appearance. For example, rose oil may thicken or gel when it gets too cold; placing the bottle under warm water or rolling it in your hands will help the oil liquify again. Citrus oils may become cloudy when cold, but this occurs naturally and you may continue to use them as usual.

Revitalising, total-body protection* • Over 50 percent increase in S-ORAC level to help protect against free radicals* • Now with patented and standardised grape seed extract

Fortifies the body and replenishes key nutrients* • Consuming 60-120ml daily delivers powerful polysaccharides and phytonutrients • Contains zeaxanthin, a well-studied carotenoid*

Seven times more pure, essential oil • Now with orange, yuzu, lemon, and tangerine essential oils that are traditionally known for their emotion-supporting properties* • Oil blend is 93 percent d-limonene a well-studied antioxidant*

Improved great flavour • New zero-calorie stevia sweetener • Proprietary Nutrient Guard processing • Flavoured with essential oils and a proprietary juice blend

Now Kosher and Halal approved

New custom glass bottle • Nonporous and impermeable glass ensures NingXia Red’s freshness and taste • No plastic or plastic-lined aluminum packaging

I love the expression “essential oils are Mother Nature’s cocktail,” and I am very excited that Young Living has a high standard and a determination to use these amazing and powerful gifts in all of its products. I have received many questions regarding the use of Young Living skin-care products, so I have decided to start my articles in the Essential Edge News with the unique simplicity of the entire skin-care line. As we get older, our skin changes; it may become thinner and more fragile, more susceptible to broken capillaries, broken lines, or sagging. Even though aging is natural, we all would like to prolong the youthful beauty of our faces to match the still-growing vitality, beauty, and confidence we carry inside. The unique skin-care ingredients, in combination with carefully chosen Young Living essential oils, may help you achieve this desired balance. Young Living’s simple skin-care routine: 1. Cleanse (a.m. & p.m.)—Use A•R•T Gentle Foaming Cleanser for makeup removal or Orange Blossom Facial Wash for a refreshing feel and basic cleansing. 2. Exfoliate (2 times a week)—Use Satin Facial Scrub to help speed up your skin’s natural renewal process and keep the skin soft and glowing. 3. Tone (after exfoliating or using masques)—Use A•R•T Purifying Toner to refresh and keep your skin at a healthy pH balance. 4. Deep Skin Care (a.m. & p.m.)—Use A•R•T Renewal Serum, enriched with the powerful benefits of orchid flowers. The active ingredients have a lower molecular weight and are able to penetrate into the skin’s deeper layers. 5. Moisturize (a.m. & p.m.)—Choose from the wonderful collection of Young Living moisturizing creams, depending on your preference or skin type, ranging from the pleasantly scented Sandalwood Moisture Cream to the powerful Boswellia Wrinkle Cream; or use the A•R•T Day Activator in the morning to protect your skin and the A•R•T Night Reconstructor in the evening to help moisturize and soothe the skin.

*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

6. Special or Extra Care—Protect, beautify, and pamper your skin. Use A•R•T Beauty Masque 2 times a week and indulge in the benefits of the orchid extracts and the wisdom of Chinese herbalists, who for thousands of years have used these ingredients to create skin-beautifying formulas. Use A•R•T Creme Masque 2-3 times a week to deeply moisturize, protect, and rejuvenate your skin with the powerful Hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, vitamins, and exotic blend of essential oils. For the delicate area around the eyes, use Wolfberry Eye Cream; and for extra irritated and dry skin, use Rose Ointment or one of our Essential Beauty Serums. Use ClaraDerm and LavaDerm when you feel that your skin needs special attention or reviving; and to protect and moisturize your lips, use Cinnamint, Grapefruit, or Lavender Lip Balm. Let your true beauty be revealed with our wonderful Young Living skin-care products!

Power of YL Events Dear Young Living,

Thank you for taking us to the heart of Australia. What a magical location you selected for the leadership experience. What a fantastic mix of group activities: dinner under the stars, sunset at two spectacular locations, and beautiful walking tours. Other companies simply don’t go to these extreme lengths for their leaders. We’ve been so fortunate to have spent time with Young Living leaders at other Young Living events. We were pleasantly surprised and pleased with the noticeable bonding that occurred, which was facilitated by this opportunity. The intimate nature of the small group offered countless benefits. We cannot express the significance of the confidence and faith shown to us at this event. We already know Young Living is our future; it fills us with pride to know that you see that in us too. Sincerely, Sharon and Andrew Wild

AIRASE: Essential Oils vs. Biofilms, Part I You need to know about biofilms because . . . ? Perhaps these words may give you a reason to read on.

VEYSEL BERK, A postdoctural fellow in the Department of Physics and the California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences at U.C. Berkeley reported on a new imaging technique using super-resolution light microscopy to investigate bacterial biofilms in the July 13, 2012, issue of Science. In a

Berkeley article, Berk stated: In their natural habitat, 99.9 percent of all bacteria live as a community and attach to surfaces as biofilms; according to the National Institutes of Health, 80 percent of all infections in humans are related to biofilms. Andre Levchenko, PhD, Johns Hop-

kins University, wrote: “There is a perception that single-celled organisms are asocial, but that is misguided. When bacteria are under stress . . . they team up and form this collective called a biofilm. If you look at naturally occurring biofilms . . . They are like cities with channels for nutrients to go in and waste to go out.” If you have ever had a dental cavity, it’s the result of biofilm on your teeth—commonly called plaque. People with medical implants—pacemakers, stents, artificial joints—may have experienced a bacterial infection because of a biofilm. The U.C. Berkeley article reported on Veysel Berk’s microscope: “He discovered that over a period of about six hours, a single bacterium laid down a glue to attach itself to a surface, then divided into daughter cells, making certain to cement each daughter to itself before splitting in two. The daughters continued to divide until

they formed a cluster . . . at which point the bacteria secreted a protein that encased the cluster like the shell of a building.” Knowing now that most bacteria live almost entirely in colonies (biofilms), the next important fact to learn is that while a single bacteria “may be susceptible to antibiotics, the films can be 1,000 times more resistant and most can only be removed surgically.” If this is not daunting enough, biofilms are found not just in humans but throughout our environment. They clog pipes and watersheds and contaminate food and food processing surfaces. Biofilms in hospitals are particularly deadly. Biofilm research is vital for the safety of patients with urinary tract infections, catheter infections, children’s middle-ear infections, and dental plaque and gingivitis. Next week in Part II: How essential oils get through biofilm armor.

Young Living Essential Oils Used in Kent State Nursing Program YOUNG LIVING ESSENTIAL oils play a key role in an exciting new partnership between Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Foundation, the Kent State College of Nursing, the Nursing Self-Care Consortium Schools of Cleveland State University, and the Ursuline College Breen School of Nursing. Urban Zen faculty members are training the schools’ nursing students in integrative therapy modalities, which include essential oils, as part of the “Care for the Caregiver” program. Essential oil therapy is a vital component of Urban Zen’s Integrative Therapy (UZIT) Program, along with

therapeutic yoga, Reiki, nutritional instruction, and contemplative care. UZIT is designed to complement traditional medical techniques and offers substantial benefits to both the recipient and the caregiver. Pure Young Living essential oils such as lavender and peppermint are used topically and in an aromatherapeutic manner in UZIT. Young Living recently made a large donation of essential oils to the college. Kent State and the Nursing Self-Care Consortium nursing students have been enthusiastic and receptive to the integration of essential

oils in their training, and the college plans to continue to use Young Living oils as part of its ongoing student curriculum. Overall, I believe the use of Young Living essential oils has helped our students become more open to the different UZIT modalities,” says Tracey Motter, director of Kent State’s undergraduate BSN programs. “I’ve also noticed that the oils have benefited our students by helping them to decrease their stress levels and cope with the high-paced curriculum.”
