NEWS OF THE WORLD LEADER IN ESSENTIAL OILS
Volume 1 Issue 6
Seed to Seal® On Display During 2011 Young Living Harvests Founder’s Message Since starting Young Living those many years ago, I have been intensely focused on one purpose: to help others reach their highest potential. I have spent countless years researching, discovering, and providing essential oils for the benefit of people throughout the world, that they may reach physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. I often feel consumed with my desire to help those in need, and yet I am privileged to do so because people everywhere who use Young Living products are experiencing positive changes in their lives. What a blessing for those people, which is so rewarding for me! My passion for discovery of natural healing remedies has taken me into the dense jungles of South America, the magnificent frankincense trail of ancient Arabia, and the mountains of Azerbaijan, Hunza, and Inner Mongolia. After visiting villages and regions across the globe, I have often had the wonderful opportunity of returning to them because of The D. Gary Young Foundation. Through these experiences, we have been able to build schools and water systems for the Indian tribes in the Copper Canyon mountains of Durango, Mexico; build and maintain schools in Ecuador; provide supplies to hospitals in Kenya; and operate clinics in Vietnam. Truthfully, there is no better feeling than giving back! I continually encourage Young Living distributors to join in the harvests. The harvests allow me to give back to you, the distributors, by sharing my knowledge about things that will help you overcome your individual trials. By sharing these experiences, we are all strengthened. I ask each of you to think about what you can do to help somebody else become better. Make today the beginning of a life filled with giving!

Distributors from around the world converged on the St. Maries farm this summer and gained understanding and admiration for the Seed to Seal process.
Throughout this year Young Living has demonstrated firsthand why we continue to be renowned as the world leader in essential oils, featuring our Seed to Seal process during our many harvests around the world. From these harvests, participating distributors gained insight and appreciation for the Young Living way, as they took advantage of time with Gary Young to experience the dedication and effort required to produce the pure, beneficial oils that have made Young Living the world leader in essential oils. The procedure required to produce pure, effective, therapeutic-grade essential oils is not easy, but we achieve this goal through our rigorous five-step benchmark. Following such lofty standards in production may be too inefficient or too costly for some companies, but not for us; high standards are what define Young Living. This was never more evident than this year at the melissa harvest at the St. Maries farm in Idaho, when more than 50 distributors were left wondering if they had been the victims of unfortunate circumstances due to the cool weather slowing down the melissa development. Gary, refusing to harvest underdeveloped melissa, instead turned his and the distributors’ attention to harvesting Douglas fir. By waiting to harvest the melissa until the right
moment of readiness, the distributors came away with a valuable learning experience and a greater confidence in Young Living and its products. The Seed to Seal process is the magic behind the oil in the bottle. It is a distinguishing element of Young Living and, if understood, can be a powerful tool in cultivating a successful Young Living business. If you missed the unique opportunity of working with and learning from Gary at any of this year’s harvests, your next opportunity awaits you in January during the balsam fir harvest in Idaho.
Seed to Seal: Setting Young Living Apart SEED
Potent essential oils come from plant species that have been authenticated and approved by Young Living and other industry experts.
CULTIVATE
Through plant cultivation at the seven Young Living farms, we continue to conduct research and work to produce the highest quality of aromatic plants.
distill Young Living’s proprietary, lowtemperature, low-pressure, steam distillation process ensures that the beneficial plant compounds in every distillation of oil remain uncompromised during the extraction process.
test
Each essential oil must pass stringent testing to make sure that the optimal bioactive compounds are present. Young Living uses its own internal and third-party laboratories to verify that purity and potency standards are met.

Every great vision requires someone to take the first step. Gary Young has been a visionary for decades, leading to the creation of great products, a great company, and a great foundation. The mission of The D. Gary Young Foundation is to make a difference by providing resources for people to empower themselves and to create a sustainable quality of life—a quality
that creates a better world for all who live in it. A terrific step forward for The D. Gary Young Foundation (DGYF) took place earlier this year in Detroit when Gary introduced his new director and assistant director, Don Clair and Sandy Sutter. Educating Young Living distributors about Gary’s vision for the foundation was richly received. The participants were awak-
ened and invigorated as they caught the DGYF vision. Attendees were inspired as they watched people literally shake out every coin in a purse or pocket and give what they had, knowing they were making a difference. This vision of the foundation is infectious and provides opportunities to contribute in many ways. The next step for the DGYF was the 2011 Convention in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, where Gary shared his vision and message with every person in attendance. Each dollar contributed to the DGYF at the convention is going to schools in places where there are no schools and to research where research is needed. The next D. Gary Young Foundation event will be held in March 2012. Come and be part of an evening dinner with Mary and Gary, followed by a full day of learning from Gary and from the best medical educators in their field. Space will be limited, so mark your calendar now for March 30–31, 2012, in St. Louis, Missouri.
YL Gives Lemon Aid to Haiti
More than 2,000 bottles shipped to support nation
During September Young Living exemplified its mission of giving back and helping people throughout the world by sponsoring Lemon Aid for Haiti, a large-scale lemon essential oil drive to benefit the people of Haiti. Following the country’s devastating earthquake in 2010, cholera, the dreaded intestinal bacteria, spread quickly and remains a serious health concern for the Haitian people, being responsible for more than 3,000 deaths to date. “Studies show that mixing lemon essential oil with food and water may provide significant health benefits. It is a versatile solution that can be used to clean and purify surfaces and
air and is known to boost mood and immunity,” explains Doug Corrigan, product trainer at Young Living. Conan Conaboy of St. Luke’s Hospital in Haiti reported that the use of lemon essential oil has been
instrumental in helping people when it is paired with standard cholera treatment. To kick off the drive, Young Living provided an initial donation of 1,000 bottles of lemon essential oil; additionally, when distributors purchased lemon essential oil to be donated, Young Living matched their purchase, thus sending two bottles to help Haitians in need. At the midway mark, more than 2,200 bottles of lemon were being shipped to Haiti. “We hope this donation will be very beneficial to the people of Haiti,” says Doug, “and we want them to know they are not forgotten.”
Omega Blue™ Impacting Students Young Living recently made a large donation of Omega Blue supplement to The Heritage School, a residential treatment center in Provo, Utah, for at-risk adolescents. The donation will provide a year’s supply of the supplement to the school’s entire student body and is valued at more than $20,000. The school’s staff is already attributing improved behavior among the students to Omega Blue. The omega-3 fatty acids found in Omega Blue—along with a proprietary blend of essential oils—support healthy cardiovascular and brain function. Omega-3s are also believed
to stabilize mood and have a positive impact on depression. “We have had a very encouraging response to Omega Blue,” says Debbie Hamilton, director of health services at The Heritage School. “The quality of the product was recognized immediately by students, parents, and staff members. We know that Omega Blue is a major contributing factor to the behavioral improvement we are seeing in many of our kids. Young Living’s generosity toward our school is greatly appreciated.”

Four Generations of Young Living Recognition Annalee Phillips spreads vitality, beginning with family Annalee Phillips, one of our Silver distributors, is excited to see four generations of her family enjoying the benefits of Young Living. That four-generation span carries memories of an entire lifetime. Annalee, her mother, and her daughter weren’t always the healthy, happy bunch they are today when they look back in time with an appreciation that only comes through struggle and experience. Somewhere in between debilitating allergies, regularly occurring strep, and, consequently, anguished depression, Annalee Phillips lost the joy she once had. Physically, she was suffering; emotionally, things were even worse. She no longer had the energy or voice to sing—her beacon of light in dark times. She needed help; her doctor recommended a double dose of Prozac. This is when Annalee took control of her life. On her journey she eventually found Young Living, and her deep despair and darkness were replaced with hope and light. Annalee’s experience began years ago, in 1992, when she was invited by friends to attend a health expo in Salt Lake City, Utah. She admits feeling skeptical at first but attended a class about aromatherapy taught by D. Gary Young. “As Gary explained essential oils and especially frankincense and myrrh, he caught my attention! That
is when I started playing with oils,” explains Annalee. Six months after that serendipitous class with Gary, another life-changing
Margaret, Annalee, and Leslie with Leslie’s four children (left to right): Leisha, Matthew, Jacelyn, and Johnathon.
Young Living event led her to the health information she had been seeking. From that moment on, essential oils were Annalee’s constant companion, toting them around in a cardboard box. “I would go up to my in-laws’ home to visit, and any opportunity to put oils on someone, I did!” she admitted. “As my family had positive experi-
ences with the oils, they started to become distributors.” Such persistence would come full circle when, in 2000, Annalee’s mother, Silver distributor Margaret Atkinson, was diagnosed with uterine cancer and one year later was diagnosed with breast cancer. “What would be devastating for most,” acknowledges Margaret, “wasn’t for me because I knew I had options with Young Living.” Panic never swept over the family during Margaret’s battle with both cancers. “I had been using essential oils long enough to know the power we had access to,” explains Annalee. That same power is what fueled Annalee’s daughter and current Star distributor, Leslie Stoddard, back to health after months of misdiagnoses of a serious illness that forced her to withdraw from college. The oils, again, had validated their worth. As Leslie’s body recovered, she found success in school, a prince charming in life, and joy in family. “I now have four children and each of them uses Young Living essential oils,” says Leslie. It has been 18 years since Annalee took control of her situation and started down a path that would change her life forever. By changing her life, she has changed the outlook of four generations—and counting.
Shelley Black Celebrates 15 Years

THE
In 15 years with Young Living, Shelley Black has seen a lot of change. Change, in fact, is one of the reasons Shelley still gets excited to come to work, after having joined the company in July 1996. “I have never had a boring day at work in the 15 years I have been with Young Living,” she said. “There is always something unique, new, fun, and interesting to do.” The experience Young Living has offered Shelley for so long is worlds apart from the numbingly dull insurance job she held previously. In this case, being laid off is the best thing to happen to Shelley, as she quickly followed her husband, Merrill, to what she described as a “little company in Riverton”—Young Living. Essential Edge News
“I rode to work with Merrill one day and applied for a job as the front desk receptionist,” remembers Shelley. “I was interviewed and hired to start work that same day.” For the next 18 months, Shelley honed her skills and developed an understanding of Young Living. After that she was hired as the Purchasing Department’s administrative assistant. Since then Shelley has climbed the ladder, advancing to purchasing agent, assistant purchasing manager, to her current responsibility as Young Living’s purchasing manager for all supplements, including audits for FDA compliance. Two buyers who purchase packaging and raw materials
also report to Shelley. She also works closely with Product Development. “My most fond memories are of the early days when I got to work with and know Mary and Gary; they are truly unique and wonderful people,” Shelley recalls. “While I am glad for the company’s success and growth, I miss those times when we all worked so closely together. “Young Living is different from other MLM companies; we offer excellent, quality products that work, and those products drive the success of the company. Even more, Young Living’s success stems from Gary and Mary’s desire to help people.”
