The heroes returned home. We could not win the last match but there was a display of marvellous performances by our team. It was disappointing to see Pakistan losing the match from our old rivals. Yet we should cherish, own and took pride in them. Men in green started well with the opening matches of the World Cup 2011. They proved that bowling is their strength. The main areas of concern are the batting and fielding that has to be considered seriously to overcome the ever longing weaknesses. The team played as a unit; it was encouraging to witness new players boosting their energies while performing well. To win or to lose, it is a part of the game. But to fight back strongly shows the team’s spirit and enthusiasm. There is a list of reasons that can be put forward to probe the defeat. Lessons should be learnt. It is how the defeat can be consoled. Nevertheless, the members of team are our heroes and we will all keep on supporting them. Go team go!

Cover Story

The art of exchanging gifts is all about expressing love, gratitude and respect towards others. When children experience the feeling of giving, without expecting something in return, their character, self-esteem and moral pride is strengthened. Children of such parents become humble and unselfish and develop a positive attitude to-

wards life. These gift-giving ideas can help children earn an extra special feeling this holiday season. The key is to think small and special. You don’t have to spend much to give a memorable present to anyone, just use your thinking cap.

Smile! Photos are a sure hit: How about taking pic4

tures, if you have a digital camera, you can create special photo memories for your friends and family. From fun foam, create a simple shape (star, tree, heart, sun), then cut out middle for where photo will go. Using only glitter glue,

sequins, beads, feathers, or ribbon, create a special keepsake featuring each friend’s photo in the center.

Craft a friendship bracelet: This season craft yourself friendship bracelets. Purchase stretch bead elastic from any craft store and knot one end. Slip on inexpensive beads (consider school colours, holiday themes pastels for springtime, bright neon tones, or even use alphabet beads to spell out a name). Girls aren’t the only ones who like jewellery. Young boys may like one with a shell or guitar or sports-oriented. Make Balloon Art: You don’t have to be a trained clown to create some simple and fun balloon art. Instructions to create simple balloon hats or kid-friendly swords often come

with balloons. Make sure ahead of times that balloons are allowed (balloons of any kind are sometimes not allowed at places) and make sure the kids you are creating these for are past choking hazards, then volunteer to create balloon art for the occasion. Be sure to practice ahead of time so you are confident in your creations! Balloon art is a sure hit with kids and cheap to make. Take a group photo of tots with their creations!

blink of an eye with this easy craft. Buy cord (gift wrap cord will work just fine). String a large bell in the center and then string festive beads on each side for accent.

Craft customized books for kids: Create a custom storybook for each child, and no, you don’t need to be an author. Simply know each child’s name and a few details, and create a simple storyline that will be treasured long after the giftexchange is over.

Plan an autograph party: Encourage group giving Ask for a special “dress up” or to others: Ask your teacher or “theme” day and take a creative group photo of your child’s class. Make a print of the photo for every child. Then, cut poster board to create a wide matte border around the photo and use cute lettering to write the name of child, school and year on the front. parent if a gift for charity can be exchanged this year instead of toys. Gifts should be selected to benefit a friend’s in need. Craft a shirt: An inexpensive shirt in a colour of choice and permanent markers, fabric glitter pens, beads and scissors is all you need to create a memory that will last way past the party. The most inexpensive way is to have children provide a shirt (it can be a plain one already in their child’s closet). You can autograph each others’ shirts (youngsters can trace hands or create simple drawings such as a smiley face), then glitz it up with fabric glitter pens and more. Cut 4-inch vertical strips on T-shirts at the hemline, slide on a few colourful beads, and knot it underneath for some extra style.

Story Time

Today, Rida was unhappy and depressed as she was thinking about her bleak future. Life hasn’t been easy for her. Cute and innocent Rida had to decide whether she had to remain with her maternal aunt or paternal aunt. This little unfortunate buddy had lost her parents last year in a car accident. She remembered last year in December in a foggy morning her parents had dropped her at her beloved aunt Amara’s place and started their journey but went through an accident and both of them died on the spot. She sighed and hot small pearls of tears rolled down her chubby cheeks. Alas! She was left alone. But aunt Amara this very named slipped from her soft pink lips and sign of hope, love and care twinkled in her eyes. She audibly repeated her name and whispered to herself, “I love you mom dad, do you know how kind and amazing aunt Amara had been. She is a busy Young Nation-April 9, 2011

working lady but has loved me whole heartedly.” Rida again started thinking of paternal aunt Nusrat, who wanted her to be with her and for her sake she had requested the court to decide and return Rida back to her. Rida’s small, alert and conscious mind got tried and drowsiness captured her nerves and she slept. In her dreams she felt as if she is facing the judge and there are lots of voices which are not understandable. Suddenly! There was a knock at her door, Rida got up and felt scared, she opened the door thinking it might be Aunt Amara, but there was a fairy wearing white frock, holding a magical wand. She smiled at Rida and politely said, “Dear! May I come in, and talk to you.” Rida went aside and softly said, “surely! Why not!” The fairy held Rida’s

hand and said, “My little girl, you are sad, don’t worry, when you go to the court tomorrow simply narrate your feelings and declare that you just want to be with aunt Amara” “But what if the court…” Rida said and continued to cry. “Now don’t you cry dear the judge will never decide without your consent? Be brave Allah will help you.” Next day, both the aunt and Rida with heavy hearts and sobbing souls entered into the court. When the judge asked Rida where she want to live in a smooth confident tones. She pointed out at her aunt Amara and the decision was made in her favour. She gave a warm hug to her aunt and went out of the court with heavy smiles.

By Zabreen Hasan Hello! My name is Amir, and I have a little sister called Sara. I want to tell you how we spent our summer holidays. Mum and Dad took us to Manchar Lake. We camped there for a week, in a fine big red tent. It was hot in the daytime, but cool at night, and the tent was wonderfully warm. After breakfast one morning, we went for a lovely long walk, and we played a game, Sara and I and Mum and Dad. We played “Guess the wetland!” Dad went first. “I’m land and I’m covered by water,” he said. I laughed. “You’ve just given us a classic descrip-

tion of a wetland, Dad!” I said. Dad grinned. “Well, let me have another turn, then,” he said. “I used to be dry land, but then it rained a lot, and now I’m full of shallow bodies of water. What am I?” Sara and I thought and thought, and we couldn’t guess. Then Mum said, “Swamp!” Dad laughed and said yes. Then it was Mum’s turn. “I’m land, too, and I get dry only some of the time. Mostly, I’m flooded!” “Oh, I know,” I said. “Marsh!” Mum and Dad laughed. “Yes!” said Mum. Then it was my turn. “I have peat all over me,” I said. “What am I?” “That’s easy!” said Dad. “You’re a bog!” “What’s peat?” asked Sara.

Mum explained. “Peat is dead plants,” she said. “After millions and millions of years, it becomes coal.” “Wow!” said Sara, with her eyes wide. “Okay, now it’s my turn. I’m a long body of water, I start in the mountains and I end up in the sea. People take water out of me for canals, for fields, and for lots of things. What am I?” “You’re a river!” Mum, Dad and I cried together. Sara laughed happily. “Can I have another go, please?” she said. “I’m a huge body of water, and streams and springs come to me, and I’m beautiful, and…” “Yes, you are beautiful!” cried Mum, and picked her up and hugged her.

“Yes, you’re a beautiful lake!” said Dad. “And now it’s my turn again. I’m a shallow depression in the land, and when it rains I’m full of water, and when it doesn’t I dry up. What am I?” “The children haven’t learnt this yet in school,” said Mum, “But you’re a vernal pool.” Suddenly Sara said, “I’m hungry!” Mum looked at her watch. “Well, you should be!” she said. “It’s lunchtime!” “Let’s go back to camp and have lunch,” said Dad. So off we went to camp, thinking of the delicious food we would have, and water from our wonderful wetlands! ‘Want to learn more? “Mama, I want to go to the toy shop for my birthday,” Douglas said. “Gretel can come too.” “The toy shop? All right then. If that’s what you want to do we’ll go. Come on Gretel. You’re coming with us.” Mama grabbed each of her children’s hands and they walked down the street to Beardley’s Toy Shop. Mama opened the door and Douglas ran inside. Gretel stood by her mama, looking at all the toys. “Go ahead, Gretel. Go and play.” Douglas saw airplanes and helicopters hanging from the ceiling. He saw marbles and robots and blocks. “This is fun,

Mama. Can I buy one toy? It is my birthday today.” Mama laughed. “Yes, you can pick one toy. Play with some of them and see what you want the most.” Gretel saw a doll house and some balls, a rocking horse and a jack-in-the-box. “Can I have a toy too, Mama?” “Today is Douglas’s birthday, Gretel. He gets a toy because it’s a special day for him. You can play with the toys, but you’ll have to wait until your birthday before you can have one.” Mama saw Gretel’s pout. “Go and play, Gretel.” Douglas rode a red tricycle around and played with a toy car. Gretel stood in the corner near the window. She didn’t want to play with the toys. “Mama, why is Gretel crying?” “She’s upset because it’s your birthday and she doesn’t get a toy of her own.” Mama explained to her son. Douglas whispered something

into Mama’s ear. “Are you sure, Douglas?” The boy nodded. He went over to the dollhouse and picked it up. He carried it to his mama. “I want to buy this for Gretel. I am having a wonderful day and a party later on. It’s okay if Gretel gets the present instead of me.” Mama hugged her boy. “I’m so proud of you. Why don’t you go and tell your sister.” Douglas ran over to Gretel and grabbed her arm, pulling her to the check out counter. “Gretel, since it’s my birthday, I’ m going to buy you a present. I bought this doll house for you. Do you like it?” Gretel giggled and clapped her hands. “For me? I get a present on your birthday?” “Yes. I’ll get presents at my party. This is for you.” Douglas handed Gretel the doll house. “Thank you for sharing, Douglas,” Gretel said. That afternoon Douglas had all his friends over for a party. He had cake and ice cream and opened a lot of presents, but Gretel didn’t mind at all. She was happy for him. He’d bought her the dollhouse. She played with it all day and let Douglas have fun on his birthday.
