AMENITIES We want you to feel at home when you live on campus in the residence halls. That’s why we make great efforts to make living in our communities comfortable, convenient and all-inclusive. Accommodations for each student in every room include an extra long twin bed and mattress, a desk and a chair, a wardrobe or closet, a dresser, and blinds on the window. For students’ comfort, all rooms have individually controlled heating and air conditioning. In addition, all residence halls have wireless high-speed Internet access and basic cable. Students may also purchase optional HBO and other premium or digital cable channels. Add designated study spaces, free laundry with online laundry room alerts, computer labs with printing capabilities, kitchen facilities, TV and game rooms, music practice rooms (in Cafaro and Kilcawley Houses), designated resident-only parking lots and Penguin Shuttle stops at each building, and you have everything you need to enjoy life on campus. One of the most convenient aspects of living on campus is no hidden costs. You don’t have to worry about paying monthly rent, utility, Internet and cable bills, buying furniture, stressing about maintenance issues, or constantly buying groceries. Your room and board costs include it all.

Student Health Services
The University’s Student Health Services office is located in Kilcawley House. Nurses are on staff Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m., and doctors are available by appointment. All on-campus services are free to YSU students, however, lab tests done off campus must be paid for by the student. Appointments can be made by calling Student Health Services. SUCCESS Students who live on campus at YSU are more likely to get involved in extracurricular activities and learn valuable educational, social, and leadership skills. This involvement helps create a feeling of ownership and belonging. Research shows that students who live on campus obtain higher grade-point averages than those who commute or live off campus. CONNECT In Housing & Residence Life we understand the importance of connecting a student’s learning inside and outside of the classroom. That’s why we have partnered with each college to offer academic learning communities (ALCs) and created our own living-learning communities (LLCs) to foster those connections. A living learning community is a residence hall community designed to bring together students with similar goals and interests. Involvement in the communities enables students to build connections between academic life and campus life. Students participate in activities which provide opportunities to grow and learn beyond the classroom. In addition to academic learning communities in Beeghley College of Education, Biotone College of Health and Human Services, the College of Creative Arts and Communication, the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the College of Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and Williamson College of Business Admisistration, The Office of Housing & Residence Life offers these living-learning opportunities.

The purpose of the First Year Resident Experience (FYRE) program is to offer several levels of opportunities that include social immersion to your residence hall, your campus community and Youngstown. Throughout the year, residents will become familiar with all that YSU has to offer socially and academically. The Office of Housing & Residence Life will collaborate with all colleges to provide academically focused opportunities as well. Whether you are looking for other residents to study with or attend functions on campus with, programming will be provided with your academic college in mind!

FLIGHT STUDENT ATHLETE EXPERIENCE
“The Flight,” living learning community has been designed specifically to encourage incoming student-athletes to go above and beyond athletic demands and focus on their overall wellness and growth. All student-athletes will complete an orientation, six wellness workshops, and participate in the Penguin Challenge. In addition, some student-athletes may be selected to be assigned a mentor who will provide additional support.

INVOLVEMENT Housing & Residence Life provides students with events and activities throughout the year that give them opportuet involved in extracurricular activities.
In addition to YSU’s Andrews Recreation and Wellness Center and intramural programs, extracurricular leadership opportunities, and Student Activities events, Housing & Residence Life offers students a wide range of social and educational activities such as Alcohol Awareness Week, Family Day, Multicultural Halloween, and L’il Sibs Weekend. Resident Assistants also plan programs that include everything from community service events to study skills and time-management workshops to Super Bowl parties.
It all starts with getting involved in the residence hall community. Lasting friendships are built within our residence halls. There is an entire community built in each residence hall that provides our students with social opportunities that will help to round out their college experience.

LEADERSHIP Housing & Residence Life is always looking to provide leadership opportunities on campus. One opportunity is to work in our residence halls. Many students choose to work while they are in school, but they drive to jobs off campus and spend extra time and money doing so. We offer our students the opportunity to work on campus right in our residence halls in a familiar environment with people they know while gaining leadership experience as well. Our resident assistant positions are the perfect way to gain extensive leadership training and experience. Our desk attendant positions provide students with the chance to be a resource to fellow students and be a known presence in the residence hall. YSU’s Residence Hall Association is another great way for all residents to get involved and be leaders in the residence halls. The Residence Hall Association (RHA) is a member of an international organization which connects residential student organizations on over 350 campuses in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Spain, and Australia. RHA seeks to create an enjoyable living community for residents, present fun and informative programs, provide resident input about housing policies and developments, and take care of the needs of the students.

Safety is a priority at YSU. In fact, Youngstown State University prides itself on consistently being one of the safest campuses in Ohio.
RESIDENCE HALL SECURITY Cafaro, Kilcawley, Lyden, and Wick Houses have a front desk that is staffed 24 hours (with police officers from midnight to 5 a.m.). Exterior residence hall doors are locked in the evening. Weller House exterior doors remain locked at all times. All guests are required to sign in and leave a valid ID at the front desk. In addition, all guests must be accompanied by their hosts. Residents are encouraged to lock their doors when they leave their rooms unoccupied, and each door is equipped with a deadbolt. Room door lock changes are mandatory when a resident loses keys. All residence halls have modern fire protection including sprinklers and smoke detectors. In addition, every residence hall is equipped with state-of-the-art exterior and public-area video surveillance cameras to monitor safety.
CAMPUS SAFETY It is important that all YSU students feel safe while they are on campus. The YSU Police Department is committed to the safety and well-being of each of our students. They can be seen patrolling campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in patrol cars, on foot, or by bike. They also oversee the Student Security Service that provides students an escort across campus. Whether it is after dark and a student wants to feel safe or a student is on crutches and needs assistance getting to class, the Student Security Service is available. Campus is also equipped with a blue light and emergency phone system. To help students get from one point on campus to another in the evening, the Penguin Shuttle runs late hours. YSU is also equipped with a campus-wide mass notification system that includes a public announcement system as well as the Penguin Alert program. Penguin Alert is the emergency notification text messaging and email system for Youngstown State University. In the event of an emergency, a message will be sent to the mobile number and/or email registered with the system. Students, parents, faculty and staff are encouraged to register. This service is provided by YSU at no cost; however, message and data rates may apply.

SUPPORT One of the best reasons to choose to live on campus is the strong network of support that Housing & Residence Life offers each of our residents. We are eager and excited to be a part of your on-campus experience. We are here to support you while you live in our residence halls. Each floor/wing of the residence halls has an assigned Resident Assistant (RA). RAs are upperclass students who have undergone thorough training and are charged with creating a strong and valued community on their floor/wing. RAs also serve as invaluable resources to residence hall students. The full-time professional staff members who work and live in each of the residence halls are called Housing Coordinators. Housing Coordinators supervise the RAs and front desk of their residence hall. They attend to the needs of the residents, handle emergencies, and keep the facilities safe, clean, and maintained. There is a professional staff member, usually a Housing Coordinator, on call
twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Housing Coordinators typically hold a master’s degree in student services and have extensive training in all aspects of their position. In addition to the live-in staff, Housing & Residence Life also has a full central office staff that includes an assistant director, two associate directors, a director, and administrative assistants. It is the goal of all Housing & Residence Life staff to support the academic mission of the University and therefore offer as much support to our residents as we possibly can. CHOICE All residents of University Housing (with the exception of students living in Weller House) are required to participate in the residential meal plan. When it comes to using the meal plan, we understand that our students want choices. That is why every meal plan option offers traditional meals as well as the flexibility of Pete’s Points and Flex Dollars. Youngstown State University Dining Services provides an exciting and innovative meal program for the residential community at Youngstown State University. You have a variety of restaurants to choose from, all conveniently located within walking distance of our residence halls that offer meals for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even late night. Students can also dine on campus and at select off-campus locations using their Pete’s Points. Restaurants such as Jimmy John’s, Hothead Burritos, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Subway all participate in the Pete’s Points program. Dining on campus provides the social experience essential to campus life. It gives you the opportunity to gather with friends, take study breaks, hang out, relax, and unwind after a hard day of classes and activities. When you dine at Youngstown State University restaurants you will enjoy comfort, convenience, outstanding food, and an inviting atmosphere all designed especially for you.

Cafaro House, our co-ed residential academic facility, houses 274 students and gives priority to those in the Honors College, academic learning communities and the BS/MD program. The facility has enclosed suites that accommodate 4 to 18 residents and one traditional hallway of rooms that house two to three residents per room.

KILCAWLEY HOUSE
Kilcawley House is conveniently located right in the heart of campus and is also home to the Office of Housing & Residence Life. After a complete renovation, the public areas and student rooms are attractive, modern, and offer maximum flexibility. This traditional, seven-story residence hall can accommodate 224 students. Kilcawley residents live in double or triple occupancy rooms, complete with loftable furniture, wall-to-wall carpeting, room-controlled heating and air-conditioning units, cable TV, wireless Internet access, window blinds, and overhead lighting.
A computer lab with printing capabilities is located in the basement. The basement also contains a 24-hour quiet study lounge, a TV lounge, a game room with ping-pong and pool tables, free laundry facilities, a kitchen with vending machines, fitness equipment, and two soundproof music practice rooms. Its residents have the advantage of being located in the heart of the YSU campus and can use all of Kilcawley Center’s facilities, Andrew’s Recreation and Wellness Center, and the YSU Bookstore without going outdoors.

Located just north of campus along Madison Avenue, Lyden House is home to 300 students. A typical student room is 12’x 16’ and houses two students. Some rooms in Lyden accommodate three students. The furniture in each room is uniquely designed to interchange to suit the individual student’s tastes and includes one loft bed with the option to request a second.

CHARM Wick House is located along Wick Avenue next to the Arms Family Museum of Local History and near the Butler Institute of American Art. Wick House, constructed in 1906, offers the charm of a traditional architecture style of the turn of the century. This four-story former mansion features an impressive, historically preserved staircase. It offers 33 upperclass students a wide variety of housing options, ranging from single occupant rooms to rooms accommodating three students. Rooms vary in size and offer a variety of private and shared showers and restroom facilities.
Wick House residents enjoy an adjacent parking lot, a large first floor lounge, computer lab, kitchenette, free laundry facilities and room-controlled heating and air conditioning units, cable TV, wireless Internet access, window blinds and carpeted rooms.

AU TONOMY WELLER HOUSE Weller House is located along Wick Avenue next to the Arms Family Museum of Local History and near the Butler Institute of American Art. Weller House accommodates juniors, seniors, and graduate students.
Weller House offers apartment-style, on-campus living, each unit having a full bathroom with tub and/or shower and a kitchen furnished with an electric range, refrigerator/freezer, a garbage disposal, and a table with chairs. Weller also offers students room-controlled heating and air conditioning units, cable TV, wireless Internet access, window blinds, and carpeted bedrooms in each apartment as well as free laundry facilities and fitness equipment on the lower level. Apartments vary in size and are designed to accommodate a range of students. Apartment styles include singles, one-bedroom doubles, two-bedroom doubles, and even a three-bedroom triple. Each bedroom is equipped with cable lines for maximum privacy. Students living in Weller House are not provided a residential meal plan. Weller House offers the best of on-campus living with the autonomy of an apartment-style setting.

APPLY HOW TO APPLY
THE IMPORTANCE OF
APPLYING EARLY
Room assignment time slots for incoming students are assigned on a firstcome, first-served basis. The single most important factor in determining when you can choose your room assignment is the date you complete your housing contract and pay your security deposit. The earlier you apply, the better the likelihood of getting your building and roommate preferences. This is particularly true for residence halls in high demand, such as Lyden House. Only students admitted to YSU may apply, and it’s a good idea to apply as soon as you are sure you want to live on campus in University Housing. However, please be sure you are certain you want to live in University Housing because the security deposit is non-refundable if you choose not to attend YSU or not to live in University Housing. The Office of Housing & Residence Life begins accepting online applications for University housing on February 1 prior to the start of the academic term. Students may apply for the start of summer term, fall term, or spring term.
For your convenience, the Application for University Housing can be found online at http://housing.ysu.edu. 1. Click on "Apply to University Housing" from http://housing. ysu.edu. 2. Log in to the YSU Portal using your user name and password. 3. Choose "University Housing Application" from the menu on the left-hand side of the screen. 4. From the Housing Portal click on the Application tab to begin your housing application. 5. Follow the steps in the Housing Portal to complete your housing materials and pay your security deposit. NEIGHBORS Buechner Hall is a privately owned and operated women’s residence hall located near the center of campus. Designed and built expressly for women, the residence is operated by the Buechner Foundation, a private, not-for-profit corporation, and is maintained by funds from the original bequest. The Foundation partially underwrites every resident’s cost. Buechner Hall houses 75 women in single and double rooms. The air-conditioned rooms are completely furnished, including linens and telephones, and are cleaned weekly by the housekeeping staff. The dining room provides 15 home-cooked meals per week, with weekend cooking facilities available. The building has an elevator and sprinkler system and laundry facilities on each floor. Staff and security guards provide maximun 24-hour security service. A beautiful and immaculately maintained building, Buechner Hall is conducive to a quiet study environment.

UNIVERSITY COURTYARD APARTMENTS Independently operated, the University Courtyard Apartments offer an ideal option for students wishing to live close to campus but not in a residence hall. WHAT RESIDENTS ARE SAYING
My experience in the residence halls has been extremely positive. My roommate has turned out to be my best friend and I know he will be in my life for a long time. Living in the residence halls has made me so much more open to talking to others that I normally wouldn't and it forces me to get to know the people around me, some of whom have knowledge and skills that I can rely on or call upon in the future. I would encourage students to live on campus for the experience.
