Alpha Phi Delta

Beta Omicron

Alpha Phi Delta fraternity was founded at Syracuse University in 1914 by a small group of Italian-American men. While initially founded as a social society, it quickly evolved into one of the most unique American college fraternities. Alpha Phi Delta still upholds its original Italian traditions and principles. By only seeking the utmost quality of men to join and become leaders, Alpha Phi Delta distinguishes itself amongst many other fraternities. Membership in Alpha Phi Delta is a lifelong bond. There are well over 20,000 members spanning the entire globe. Alpha Phi Delta prepares college men for challenges and duties that will surely be encountered in one’s lifetime. The fraternity prides itself on basic life principles that lead to success. The Beta Omicron chapter was established at Youngstown State University in March of 1953. After a brief leave of absence in the 90s, the fraternity returned to the YSU campus in 2004. The Youngstown Alumni Club of Alpha Phi Delta was very instrumental in the return of APD. This will be the club’s 68th year in existence. Since the return of the fraternity, Beta Omicron has represented themselves, their alumni, and the University with great pride and respect. This year, Alpha Phi Delta is celebrating its seventeen-year anniversary of its reestablishment at Youngstown State University. Our philanthropic efforts this year included hosting various livestreams and social media campaigns where we raised funds for Akron Children’s Hospital. Through seventeen years of being active on campus, we have made many great strides. Members have repeatedly held top leadership roles in the Interfraternity Council as well as Greek Campus Life. Our success has continued to grow and we look forward to what lies ahead of us.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon

ohio alpha

The Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity was founded on March 9, 1856, in Tuscaloosa, AL. The founders were eight young men and the leader among them was Noble Leslie DeVotie. He wrote the fraternity’s ritual, developed the grip and chose the name. The fraternity quickly grew to eight chapters in two years, but the American Civil War and anti-fraternity laws were difficult for expansion for many years. Though only two founders remained alive by 1896, their meeting and a convention was the fraternity’s largest event since the war. A revival and fraternity growth began around this time as the dust settled in a struggling nation. Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s progress has been achieved through the loyalty and zeal of its greatest members. The fraternity was able to see growth and prosperity through the entire 20th century. Sigma Alpha Epsilon established its national headquarters in Evanston, IL in 1930. This was the site of the first National Leadership School; a program designed to foster the physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs of undergraduate members. Today, Sigma Alpha Epsilon has over 350,000 members and is one of the nation’s largest social fraternities with nearly 250 chapters in the United States. The Ohio Alpha Chapter of SAE was chartered at Youngstown University in 1959. The men of this organization have consistently participated in social, campus and community activities. This year, SAE had a large part in many events, including YSU’s Guinathon, which raised over $50,000 for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. SAE has sponsored several philanthropy events of their own to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network, the Poland Rotary Club and many others. An event that SAE Ohio Alpha is very proud of hosting is Grilled Cheese with the SAE’s. This year Grilled Cheese with the SAE’s was on March 27 at the Newman Center and every dollar we collected was sent to Akron Children’s Hospital in the Mahoning Valley. We always appreciate the support from the community to help our cause. Brothers from Youngstown State have travelled to Boston, Phoenix, Chicago, and other locations to accelerate their skills in leadership. There are currently 26 active members of Ohio Alpha. The brothers of SAE are proud and excited to perform at tonight’s 68th Annual Greek Sing Competition and hope that you will enjoy our performance.

Sigma Chi

Eta Chi

Sigma Chi Fraternity was founded on June 28, 1855, at Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio, by seven men. Six of these men were brothers of another fraternity. They felt what they stood for was imperfectly realized in that organization. Based on the ideals of friendship, justice and learning, these men formed the Fraternal Order of Sigma Chi. Sigma Chi has inducted over 300,000 members. There are 230 active chapters across the United States and Canada. Additionally, Sigma Chi has over 130 alumni chapters, in addition to alumni groups in professions such as law and medicine, among many others. Annually, Sigma Chi holds the world’s largest leadership workshop called the Krach Transformational Leadership Workshop. Sigma Chi strives to be the world’s premier leadership development organization. In fact, in 2005, the United States Congress passed a resolution congratulating Sigma Chi on our 150th anniversary and wishing the fraternity well in our future as a well-respected and cherished organization. Sigma Chi has a plethora of famous alumni, from David Letterman to Drew Brees and many others in between, but we take pride in saying that all of our brothers are important members who uphold a strict standard to be men of good character and well-respected on both local campuses and internationally. Our local chapter, Eta Chi, was founded on April 16, 1977. This year has marked a lot of great progress for our chapter. We have continued to advance our philanthropic efforts by holding “Derby Days”, our annual philanthropy week which aims to raise both awareness and funding for cancer research for our national philanthropic partner, the Huntsman Cancer Foundation. The Huntsman Cancer Foundation was founded by one of Sigma Chi’s most noteworthy alumni, Jon M. Huntsman. This year we intend to hold our annual event “Roquacade”, an evening of local musical talent which raises money for Huntsman. The event will be held at The Lemon Grove downtown on April 16 from 6:30PM to 10:00PM. We have set a goal of raising $5,000 this year, an all-time high that will enable our chapter to enter the $10,000 club with Huntsman. If you are interested in hearing more about the event, sponsoring, or donating; please contact Trenton Peluso at tepeluso@student.ysu.edu. The brothers of Sigma Chi want to thank you for your support and for attending this evening’s festivities. Enjoy the show! 5

Sigma Tau Gamma

Beta gamma

Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity was founded at the University of Central Missouri in 1920 by seventeen educators and veterans of the first World War. As the fraternity’s official website states, these men “…were veterans who had met death face to face. Even so, they did not stare death down, for that is impossible. Rather, they fully realized the essence of a life worth living, a life that manifests itself in caring, one for the other.” This year, Sigma Tau Gamma’s Beta Gamma Chapter is continuing their successes for the 20th year. Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity maintains six fundamental principles: learning, integrity, excellence, leadership, citizenship, and brotherhood. These principles are more than just words, but rather guides by which the fraternity’s brothers lead their lives. The fraternity’s national philanthropy is the Special Olympics, an organization for which Beta Gamma Chapter frequently fundraises. As an example, last year, YSU’s brothers of Sigma Tau Gamma participated in the 2020 Polar Plunge at Mosquito Lake, as well as hosting our signature annual event, “Sig Tacos”, raising a combined total of $1,400 for the Special Olympics. In addition to Special Olympics, we have also begun sponsoring a special needs cheer team through Cheertime Athletics, raising money for equipment, and providing moral support to the inspiring athletes on the team. More than fundraising, members the Beta Gamma Chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma take our national philanthropy with themselves wherever they go amongst their daily lives. Sigma Tau Gamma has recently joined with the Special Olympics’ campaign to “Spread the Word to End the Word”, an effort encouraging people nationwide to pledge to stop using the derogatory word “retard.” The campaign is devoted to educating and raising awareness about individuals with intellectual disabilities and the offensive use of the “R-word” in casual conversation. The brothers of Sigma Tau Gamma, beyond philanthropic endeavors, are dedicated to academic excellence. Since returning to campus at YSU, Beta Gamma Chapter has achieved the highest or second highest average G.P.A. of the University’s fraternities in 19 out of the 20 years since then. In the past years, the Beta Gamma chapter has been one of the highest academic achieving chapters amongst all the National Chapters. Additionally, the Beta Gamma chapter was awarded the Edward H. McCune distinguished chapter award at the most recent Summer’s national conference. This award was given to only three out of eighty-eight chapters of Sigma Tau Gamma that are active. Today, our brothers strive for superior performance just as their forebears did – these accomplishments, among others, prove that Beta Gamma Chapter works tirelessly to transform the fraternity’s six principles from abstract ideality to tangible reality. 6

Theta Chi

epsilon delta

Theta Chi was originally founded by two cadets at Norwich University in Vermont on April 10, 1856. The fraternity was established on the basic principles of creating the ideal man, and extending an assisting hand to whomever may seek it. Being a military based fraternity, their main philanthropy is the United Services Organization. Founded at Youngstown State University in 1956, Theta Chi thrived on the campus for fifty-four years, before closing its doors in 2010. Although it has been a several years wait, Theta Chi has officially returned. November 19, 2016 marked the first reappearance of the Epsilon Delta Colony in just over half-adecade. Fast forward, nearly a year and a half later, to March 17, 2018 where the colony, finally, reinstalled as a Chapter. With their return to campus, the Epsilon Delta Chapter, within the past three years, has positively influenced Youngstown State University and the surrounding communities. Theta Chi is all about the fundamentals of becoming a Resolute man. By definition, he is the ideal guy who is overall, well-rounded. They strive to ensure that their brothers uphold the name of excellence, and create a legacy for those to come. The brothers of Theta Chi believe in “Alma Mater First, and Theta Chi for Alma Mater.” As a fraternity, they strive to help others and their brothers to be successful and be the absolute best they can be.

2

Alpha Omicron Pi was founded on January 2, 1897, by four women seeking the lifelong bonds of fraternal love and friendship at Barnard College of Columbia University in New York, New York. Over the next 120 years, AOII has added over 190 collegiate chapters and a total of 191,000 initiated members. AOII has only one color, cardinal. Our jewel is the Ruby, and our flower is the Jacqueminot Rose, our symbol is the Infinity Rose and the panda is our official mascot. Alpha Omicron Pi’s international philanthropy is the Arthritis Foundation. AOII began as a local sorority called Phi Lambda Delta in 1927. The Phi Lambda Chapter at Youngstown State University became AOII’s 72nd chapter when it installed 17 members. In its early days, Phi Lambda participated in activities such as building prize-winning floats; the election of Homecoming, prom and Mardi Gras Queens; and Greek Sing. When Youngstown experienced an economic depression during the early 1980s, the university’s enrollment declined and students could not afford the expenses of Greek letter organizations. The chapter’s charter was placed in trust in 1982. Phi Lambda was re-installed on December 10, 2011. The chapter has been extremely active in the local community. They have sponsored campus-wide service projects including, Sisters for Soldiers, A Run-OutArthritis 5K and a “Strike-Out Arthritis” Bowling Event. The sisters of Alpha Omicron Pi would like to thank all guests for viewing Greek Sing 2021. We wish everyone good health and good luck! Enjoy the show!

Alpha Xi Delta

Theta upsilon

On April 17, 1893, 10 women at Lombard College in Galesburg, Illinois shared a vision and a dream of a national organization devoted to empowering women; their dream became Alpha Xi Delta. With more than 180,000 initiated members, Alpha Xi Delta, one of the oldest women’s fraternal organizations in the United States, is a progressive organization dedicated to the personal growth of women. Alpha Xi Delta’s founders left us a great legacy. They taught us the value of education because it inspires us to achieve our goals and gives us the power to be whatever we choose. They taught us to support one another through shared experience and understanding. They taught us to serve others and reach out to better the lives of those in need. Because of our founders, Alpha Xi Delta continues to inspire countless bold and talented women to realize their potential. With the four founding ideals of sisterhood, leadership, knowledge, and service, the Theta Upsilon chapter here at Youngstown State University was founded on April 13, 1996. Our timeless values have remained constant, inspiring the drive in strong women to realize their potential through this chapter and the entire Greek life system. Since 2009, Alpha Xi Delta has been associated with Autism Speaks as its national philanthropy. Autism Speaks is dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes and better interventions for autism and autism spectrum disorders; while increasing understanding and acceptance. Sisters across the country have raised more than $10,000,000.00 for Autism Speaks up to date and counting. The Theta Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta is proud of its rich history and lasting impact on its members and the Panhellenic community.

Delta Zeta

Kappa chi

Delta Zeta Sorority was founded at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, on October 24, 1902. Delta Zeta was the first sorority to be founded at the university, as women had just been offered full student status. Adopting the pink killarney rose as our flower, six young women pursued their vision of lifetime sisterhood, laying the foundation for the sorority, which would have a national reach. Today, Delta Zeta has enriched the lives of over 260,000 alumnae sisters in the United States and Canada. At any given time, Delta Zeta has 16,700 active undergraduate collegian sisters. Since 1970, the sisters of the Kappa Chi chapter at Youngstown State University have been promoting of values of friendship, curiosity, generosity, citizenship, empowerment, and belonging. Our sisters have high standards of scholarship, cultural interests, and leadership roles in student organizations. Donning the colors of rose and green, Delta Zeta sisters provide numerous services to others and strive to improve daily, especially through commitment to philanthropy. Since 1954, Delta Zeta has committed to support hearing and speech. In 2015, our national partner became the Starkey Hearing foundation. In 2020, Delta Zeta completed a five-year, $5 million pledge for Starkey. We have also partnered with The American Society for Deaf Children. This national philanthropy partner allows Delta Zeta to broaden our domestic impact through awareness and education and provide more ways for members to connect with our philanthropy. Annually, sisters support our national service project which bears our mascot, The Painted Turtle Camp in Lake Hughes, California. This camp is free of cost to children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. The Painted Turtle supports children’s medical needs, inspires them to reach beyond their illnesses, and provides care, education, and respite for their families. In 2020, Delta Zeta expanded the National Service Project to a Global Service Project, SeriousFun Children’s Network. Through SeriousFun Children’s Network, Delta Zetas have the opportunity to volunteer globally. Shining brightly like our diamond symbol, Delta Zeta members share a common purpose: to make life fuller, more meaningful, and more rewarding. To our members, it is the promise of friendship, personal development and opportunity. To the community, we are valued citizens deeply committed to making a difference where we live. Our promises to our sorority and our commitment to enrich the world are for a lifetime. 16

Z

zeta gamma

On October 15, 1898, a group of nine women in Farmville, Virginia, banded together with common ideals of friendship, laughter, and sisterhood to build our beloved Zeta Tau Alpha. The purpose of Zeta Tau Alpha is the intensifying of friendship, the fostering of a spirit of love, the creating of such sentiments, the performing of such deeds, and the molding of such opinions as will be conducive to the building up of a purer and nobler womanhood in the world. The sisterhood of Zeta Tau Alpha has grown to include 257 chapters internationally with over 257,000 members who share the same dreams as our founders’ original ideals. In this past year, the sisters of Zeta Gamma at YSU have worked diligently to maintain the high standards and expectations of Zeta Tau Alpha, and this dedication has paid off in an amazing way with their many accomplishments. Zeta Gamma has received several awards in the past years such as Crown Chapter award which recognizes us as an outstanding collegiate chapter. We have also been recognized nationally for our academic achievements. Last year, we were awarded the Anne Winnes Redmond Service Award which is one of the highest honors that a chapter can receive. This award recognizes a chapter on a small campus for its philanthropic efforts, based on volunteer service hours on campus and in the community, and fundraising efforts. It is named in honor of Anne Winnes Redmond, who served as ZTA’s National Service Chairman for more than 50 years. This recognizes the Zeta Gamma chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha as one of the top chapters nationally. On a national level, Zeta Tau Alpha is partnered with the American Cancer Society, the National Football League and Bright Pink to conduct philanthropic efforts in honoring cancer survivors, providing cancer awareness, and conducting women’s health education. Zeta Gamma’s commitment to service is one of our biggest accomplishments because of our outstanding track record with our biggest philanthropy event, the Pink Ribbon Cheer Classic. Due to COVID-19, we were unable to hold the 20th Pink Ribbon Cheer Classic. Despite this setback, our annual Pink Out Week held in October for breast cancer awareness month was able to raise almost $6,000 for Breast Cancer Awareness and Education on top of the already $1.3 million we have raised through our philanthropy efforts in the past 20 years.
