Each day over 2000 bags will be filled with fruit, popcorn, crackers, and cookies. The bags will then be delivered each day with a hot item like a taco, corn dog, pizza, or burrito. All of the food in the bag is bought fresh so it can be prepared quickly and in a uniform fashion. Who receives the bag? The bags are loaded into 4 bike route’s and 5 van’s delivered to the neighborhoods that Citychurch ministers in. The lunch is usually met with a smile and excitement from the child who receives it. As the marketing director at The People’s Federal Credit Union, I’m often asked what is the best way to teach children about money. The key is to start early and have honest, thoughtful, and regular conversations about money. Children as young as two can begin to grasp financial concepts. Once you begin laying that financial literacy foundation, it becomes easy to keep the conversation going. Here is a list of ages and concepts children should be learning about money: Children Aged Two to Twelve - Begin by introducing the concept of money and coins. Help them sort the coins by type and help them count them (it’s also a great way to teach them to count early). As they get older, play store with them, helping them learn to total purchases and give the correct amount of money, as well as counting their change. Open a savings account and help them save for the things they want. This also teaches them to wait for the things they desire and to establish a sense of pride as they accomplish their savings goals. At my credit union, we have the Kirby Kangaroo savings account just for children that rewards them with prizes as they save. You may want to set an allowance or establish ways your children can earn money. Explain that some of that money is to spend, some is to save, and some is to share (for a charity or person in need). You may even want to have three glass jars where they can see that money accumulate. Each time they get money for birthday or chores, have them distribute the money among the three jars equally. In a basic manner, explain how you earn money and what they can do to earn their own. Explain the differences between needs and wants. As you’re shopping, talk through your buying decisions with them (is something on sale, therefore you buy more or is it something you don’t really need and put it back). Go over your household’s major monthly expenses such as housing, food and transportation and how much each costs. Teens Aged Thirteen to Eighteen. This is a good time to open a checking account for your teen. At The People’s Federal Credit Union, we have a teen checking account with a debit card. A parent or

guardian is the joint owner and provides supervision while the teen learns how an account works. This is a time when teens want to buy all the latest and greatest gadgets and brand named clothing. Use this opportunity to teach smart spending decisions. Talk with your teen a b o u t your past spending mistakes, and what you would have done differently.

If appropriate, help them get a credit card and instill the importance of paying it off each month to avoid finance charges. While kids under the age of 21 cannot get a credit card by themselves, at my credit union a parent can co-sign on a MasterCard for their child over 18 and help them begin to establish credit. Teach them the importance of building up emergency savings of at least three months living expenses in case of a job loss or car repairs so they do not have to resort to their credit card to pay for emergencies. In addition, now is a good time to talk about and save for their future needs, such as a down payment on a house. It may seem like a lot to cover, but as you start to talk about money with your children you’ll find it becomes easy to work money and finances into everyday conversations. And those conversations will pay huge dividends with money smart children who grow into financially savvy adults.

Encourage your teen to get a job and start saving for a big ticket item like a car, and have them start paying for some of their expenses such as gas and insurance. Talk with them about how much money they can expect to need for college, and how much you are willing to FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY: contribute to that savings. Have them compare the costs of colleges so they get an accurate idea of how much higher education costs. brought to you by Old Karz

HISTORY OF:

City Church Outreach Ministry

Citychurch Outreach Ministry began in October 1996. The Lane family moved to downtown Amarillo, Texas to an abandoned building at 205 S. Polk and began ministering to the disadvantaged children of the city. Don Lane Sr., who has served as a Southern Baptist pastor since 1971, had survived a life changing liver transplant, after 15 years of illness. Don, his wife, Diana, sons, Donnie Jr. and James, and daughter, Anna Lea, worked together to clean out the old building, build the living quarters on the second floor, and visit the neighborhoods around the Downtown area. The ministry began as a weekly mealtime and Bible club. It started with 16 children the first night and quickly grew to 150 children per week within a few weeks. Within six months Citychurch was running out of room to serve the children and volunteers who would come to help with each week’s meetings. The building attached to the north of Citychurch became available and was purchased and put in use immediately, providing much needed class-room

Two Ingredient Play Dough Materials: tempera paint, corn starch, mixing bowl, a large spoon Instructions Scoop a couple of large, heaping spoonfuls of corn starch into a bowl. Squirt some tempera paint inside. You can eyeball the amount and add more paint or corn starch later until you achieve the right consistency. Mix vigorously until you achieve a thick paste. Using your hands, continue to blend the two ingredients. Add more corn starch if the mix seems too wet, or more paint if it’s too crumbly. Once you have rolled the mixture into a dough ball, you can begin playing with it! If the dough ball is leaving a bunch of paint on your hands, sprinkle corn starch on a work surface and roll the ball through it, kneading until the dough ball is less wet; less wet means less messy!

space. Volunteers from all denominations and walks of life were recruited to help transport, feed and teach children. The buildings now house a commercial kitchen capable of feeding 300 people continuously. Citychurch maintains a fleet of vans and buses because

free transportation is provided to each event at the church. In August 2000, Citychurch was given the property directly across the street on the west side of Polk

GETTING STARTED:

Beginner’s Guide to Learn to Ride ATVs

brought to you by Altus Motorsports Riding an ATV is a great experience that can be enjoyed by the entire family. It’s exciting, and it teaches respect on many levels, including for the environment, habitat and even respect for others. Learning to ride an ATV can be fun and will make you a safer ATVer. This guide will help you get well on your way to learn to ride an ATV and help you stay safe by showing you some of the basics about the proper gear, where to get training, the fundamentals of how to control an ATV and other aspects that will provide you with the confidence you need to have a great, safe experience while you learn to ride an ATV.

a Side by Side (SxS) if you plan on taking the kids or other passengers on the same ATV.

Getting the Gear: ATV Safety Gear: Helmet, Boots and Goggles. One of the most important things you need to do is get dressed for the occasion, regardless of what type of ATV you buy, where you plan to ride, or what kind of riding you intend to do. At the very least, a helmet is the very first (and best) line of protection from injury in case of a crash.

Anyone can hop on an ATV and make it go. That’s the easy part. It won’t fall over like a motorcycle when you first try to take off. The problem is when you need to turn, or stop, or stop quickly in the middle of a turn. Do you know how it’s going to react? Do you know how much influence your body position has on a quad? Find out by taking a course.

Other standard safety gear includes gloves, boots that go over the ankle, long sleeve shirt, long pants, goggles and a chest protector. Choosing an ATV You first have to decide what kind of riding you’ll be doing and that will tell you what type of ATV to get. For pure recreational riding, a sport quad would be a good bet. If you think you might need to do some work from time to time, you might consider a utility ATV. If you’re buying for the kids to ride, then you definitely need to look at youth ATVs, or perhaps

Get ATV Training Once you get an right ATV for the kind of riding you’ll be doing and get the proper gear, it’s time to think about how to ride, and how to do it safely.

The ATV Safety Institute has classes all over the country for you to get training. Your First Few Hours on an ATV If you’re new to riding ATVs you should start out slow and easy until you get used to it. The controls are usually very similar from model to model, with a thumb throttle on the right handle-bar and a hand-brake that usually activates the front brakes. Some have a twist throttle like a motorcycle. The left handle-bar usually has the clutch if equipped. The rear brakes are applied with the right foot, and shifting with the left foot. After you’ve gotten completely familiar with the ATV; where the controls are, how to operate everything naturally (without thinking about what does what), how to turn safely using your body-weight then you can start opening up a little bit at a time. As a new rider, you need to stay completely focused on what you’re doing and where you’re going. Don’t over-drive your line of sight or your brakes. Practice starting, stopping and turning over and over until it’s second nature. There’s nothing that will increase your riding ability like seat time. Taking it to the Next Level, Racing! If you’ve got the itch from riding ATVs you may not be able to scratch it until you start racing on at least an amateur level. But before you do that, let me ask you something... Are you sure? This kind of racing, while highly exciting for spectators, can be very painful and expensive. Before you commit to racing you should talk to some people that race. Especially those that race (or have raced) quads. It’s a bit of a different sport than most other types of racing because the quads are open wheeled, heavy, and have a bad habit of landing on the rider after an un-planned dismount. If you’re still convinced you won’t sleep at night until you’ve tossed your quad around a track in legitimate competition then go get the ATV safety
