MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR 2020 is the year that none of us will ever forget. Our lives have been turned upside down and every aspect of our normal routines have changed. But it is also the year where we have focused on friends and family and the important and lasting things in our lives – and that includes ART! Normally I would be writing to encourage you to be one of 600 lucky guests who get to enjoy one of the most unique, exciting and important fundraising events in the Alberta calendar. 2020 will change that, but the need and value of this event and art has never been more important. Your support for Art on the Block is crucial to keeping the AGA’s exhibitions, education programming and community outreach going – as we strive to give Edmontonians and Albertans unforgettable art experiences. This year the event will be different but it still depends on an extraordinary group of supporters to make it happen. We should all thank the artists, galleries, donors, sponsors, patrons, businesses, volunteers, and AGA staff who have given their time, talent, ideas, and generosity to help us recraft Art on the Block with social distancing. We hope you will enjoy and appreciate this year’s hybrid event with the exhibition of auction items and its concurrent online auction. Please support everything the AGA does and the place of art in making our society richer by bidding and bidding often! This is your chance to show your appreciation for the art that you have been missing. There are almost 100 items, including more than 70 works of investment-quality art donated by recognized Canadian artists, exclusive art-inspired experiences and items donated by local artisans and businesses. It will be a different type of party this year, but you can make a difference. Please be a part of the AGA’s largest fundraiser and show Alberta how much 2020 has made you miss art. — Krista Nelson-Marciano 2020 Chair

ART HAS MISSED YOU. DON’T MISS THIS ART. We are thrilled to welcome you to Art on the Block 2020 (AOTB). While this year’s event is a little different, the goal remains the same; to connect bidders with an opportunity to purchase engaging experiences and amazing artworks from Alberta artists while raising funds to support the Art Gallery of Alberta. AOTB is our largest annual fundraiser, so please bid generously and/or consider making a donation to support our exhibitions and educational programming. Thank you for your support.

GUIDE FOR PROSPECTIVE BUYERS CURATOR’S PREVIEW Items may be sold at Fair Market Value (FMV) during this event. Sold items will be marked by a red dot in the gallery and noted as sold online. STARTING BID All lots are subject to reserves which is the minimum starting bid. The reserve is approximately 50-60% of the assessed Fair Market Value (FMV). BUYER’S PREMIUM All starting bids include a buyer’s premium of 5% of the FMV which helps cover auction/exhibition costs. FAIR MARKET VALUE Fair Market Value (FMV) is the value at which an object changes hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller, acting independently of each other, neither being under any compulsion to buy or sell and both having reasonable knowledge of the relevant facts. BIDS EXCEEDING FMV Bidders who pay 25% more than the assessed FMV are eligible for a Charitable Tax Receipt for the value above the FMV. We are unable to issue tax receipts for services and vouchers. ARTIST PAYMENT For every AOTB, artists generously, and voluntarily, donate their artwork. Artists will receive 30% of the total winning bid amount and/or a charitable tax receipt for their donation. Please note: images of the artworks have been cropped to fit the exhibition guide and no not necessarily represent the actual artwork.

Very briefly: this text conveys a set of instructions and a few of the artist’s thoughts pertinent to the rationale guiding this proposition. More than a few people may read this text; however, inasmuch as this text and the paper it is printed on is integral to what may later be considered an artwork, the work will ultimately be completed by whoever understands and accepts the rationale behind this motion, and furthermore, carries out the instructions indicated below with a sincere spirit of camaraderie, reflection, and hope. Further to these conditions, it will be assumed that it is in this case, the person who places the winning bid on this item in the Art Gallery of Alberta’s Art On The Block 2020 fundraising auction who will be that person with the aforementioned enthusiastic, sincere spirit necessary to successfully complete this work. To better explain the intention behind this proposition, the spirit that the artist suggests this work be undertaken in will benefit from further elaboration. Firstly, by invoking a spirit of camaraderie, the artist means simply to point out the affinity shared between them and the person who’s bid wins this text by responding to the Art Gallery of Alberta’s call for support. Secondly, a spirit of reflection is urged by the artist so that the gesture at hand may be carried out with due regard for all of the artists who are, in turn, supported by the Art Gallery of Alberta through exhibitions, screenings, and other programs. Moreover, the artist wishes to highlight that the majority of this activity takes place on Treaty 6 territory. It is on the basis of this treaty between the Crown and the Cree, Assiniboine, and Saulteaux peoples that settlers and their descendants have obtained permission to be on this territory. This fact (also noting standing controversies about critical, culturally-based misunderstandings between the Crown and these Indigenous peoples, which may have undermined the negotiation of Treaty 6) should be taken very seriously. Lastly, the artist encourages a spirit of hope; especially the hope that any small act of benevolence conceived with a genuine willingness to understand the needs of others can eventually lead to a constructive outcome of broader significance.

This text will now directly address the responding participant in this work. The instructions for the completion of this work are straightforward. Having earnestly accepted this text and the gesture it proposes below, the artist asks you to read this text as many times as you feel is necessary to remember its substance - not for the purpose of recitation, but to paraphrase. When you are confident that you understand the text sufficiently, you must place this paper on a flat, stable, horizontal surface, such as a table or countertop. The paper must be placed with the text facing upward. Next, open your non-dominant hand and place it at the centre of the paper, palm down with your fingertips pointing toward the top. Push with moderate pressure downward through the palm while simultaneously dragging your fingers in firmly toward the palm. You are meant to pull the paper into your hand with this act. Pass the partially crushed paper from your non-dominant hand to your dominant hand; as your dominant hand receives the page, crush it a second time with the fingers closing around the paper. Place the crushed paper in a place where it can be seen, but will not be disturbed. Whenever you look at this crushed paper, recall as much as you can of what was conveyed to you through the text it holds and, if so inclined, discuss it with others.
