My research has revealed that a significant number of women in Malawi suffer from this condition, yet they are reluctant to speak up about it because of the negative stigma associated with it. Specifically, they fear being perceived as weak or being judged as inadequate mothers.

Also known as Post Natal Depression, PPD is a type of mood disorder that affects women after giving birth. It is a severe form of depression that can occur anytime within the first year after childbirth. PPD is different from the "baby blues" that many new moms experience.
The baby blues are a temporary period of mild depression that lasts for a few days or weeks after childbirth. PPD, on the other hand, can last for several months or even a year.

Ans: Good day to you too. My Daughter's name is Wami Khethiwe Kalinali
Q2: Karen, that's a lovely name you've chosen for your daughter Could you elaborate on the inspiration behind the name and share with us who had the honor of naming your daughter?
Ans: Well, all the names we gave to our daughter are Zulu names. Wami means "Mine" and Khethiwe means "Chosen" so the comprehensive meaning is " Mine Chosen by God" The dad and I came up with a list of names, I chose Wami and he chose Khethiwe. We wanted unique names for her, and these names were just perfect.
Q3: Would you mind sharing with us the birthdate of your daughter?
Ans: We were blessed with Princess Wami Khethiwe on the 23rd of June 2023.
Q4: Karen, can you tell us about the hospital where your daughter was born? Also, how was your experience with the medical staff, were they compassionate and attentive to your needs?
Ans: Our daughter was born at Good Hope Private Hospital, which is situated in area 49 Lilongwe My experience was both exciting and scary as I was going to be a mum for the very first time But the medical staff was really professional, the nurses were supportive and caring, and the baby and I had no medical complications all went well
Q5: Could you describe the emotions you felt when you first held your daughter in your arms?
Ans: I had tears of joy as I held my daughter in my arms. I couldn't believe that I had a baby. In my heart, I kept praising God for the wonderful gift he had given us. I always wanted my firstborn to be a girl, and God had answered my prayer.
Q6: During the early stages of motherhood/parenthood, did you receive enough support from family or did you have to manage mostly on your own?
Ans: Thankfully, I had a lot of support from my husband, family, and friends. They helped me with the baby, gave me advice, and even cooked meals for us. I was not alone, and that made a big difference
Q7: Karen, how has your journey of motherhood/parenthood been thus far?
Ans: It has been an amazing journey, filled with many challenges and joys. Every day is a learning experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to raise my daughter and watch her grow
Q8: As a parent, what are some of the challenges you have faced while raising your daughter?
Ans: One of the biggest challenges has been balancing work and motherhood It can be difficult to find the right balance and give both the attention they deserve Additionally, adjusting to a new routine and sleepless nights were also challenging
Q9: Have you started considering plans for your daughter's future? If so, could you share with us some of the preparations you have made?
Ans: Yes, we have started planning for her future We have opened a savings account for her and are saving for her education. We also want to teach her good values and raise her to be a responsible and caring individual.

Ans: I cherish her innocence and pure heart. She is always happy, curious, and full of wonder. Her smile brightens up my day, and I am grateful for every moment we spend together.

Why Are Nurses In Government Hospitals Of Malawi Mistreating Laboring Women?
Amora Magazine has a dedicated team of women who visit government hospitals to provide baby clothes and other essential items to economically challenged women. Over the past few months, we have had a gratifying experience witnessing the joy of motherhood in the faces of these women, especially first-time mothers who were anxious about taking care of their newborns
During our visits to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, we spoke to Madalitso Phiri, a 19-year-old mother who had just given birth. She shared her experience of giving birth at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she faced harsh treatment from the nurses.
Madalitso had a difficult upbringing, as she grew up in poverty and had to sell vegetables on the streets of Blantyre to support her family One night, she was raped by a man she trusted to help her carry her goods home When she became pregnant, she didn't tell her mother the truth about how it happened.
On the 5th of April 2023, Madalitso went into labor, she was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she was met with hostility from the nurses They called her names and did not provide her with proper care Madalitso's mother had to help her deliver the baby, and the female nurse who finally attended to her was also harsh
Despite her difficult circumstances, Madalitso did not consider abortion, as it goes against her Christian beliefs. The story of Madalitso highlights the challenges faced by many women in Malawi, particularly those who are poor, vulnerable, and cannot afford private hospitals
So, Should Women Fear Giving Birth In Government Hospitals?
Your Amora Magazine had the privilege of talking to various women who gave birth in government hospitals, and 99% of them have nothing positive to say about their experiences in these facilities These women have reported experiencing brutality and negligence from the medical staff, particularly the nurses. It is very sad to say that Malawian women are terrified of giving birth in government hospitals, but some have no choice but to face the horror since they cannot afford the luxury of private hospitals.
On one occasion, we spoke to Miss Tamandani, who resides in Nancholi and gave birth at Queen Elizabeth Hospital In her own words, she said, 'My experience with the nurses at Queen Elizabeth Hospital was a horror. Those people are rude and have no sympathy, yet they are mothers too. They know the pain and struggle of giving birth yet they treat us like trash.
Hi, My Name is Madalitso Phiri, I endured 20 hours of labor surrounded by cruel nurses at Queen Elizabeth Hospital who continuously scolded and called me names for expressing my pain. Not only that, my mother had to step in and help deliver the baby when the nurses were reluctant.

My firstborn was born in Queens; I endured 17 hours of labor surrounded by mean nurses, and it was the worst experience of my life But I've decided not to have any more children until my husband and I can afford a private hospital where I will be handled with care and respect
It is deeply concerning to hear about the negative experiences that women in Malawi are having in government hospitals during childbirth. Giving birth should be a joyful and empowering experience, and it is unacceptable that women are experiencing brutality and neglect from medical staff
