Cottage Living in

Old Naples S

ituated in the heart of Old Naples, 440 6th Street is one of three homes in the Poinciana Cottages. This offers an urban townhouse experience with a cottage twist. Fresh coastal colors, crisp whites, and driftwood-tone woods all come together to create a home that is ushering in a new era of design and living in Old Naples. Barely a block from 5th Avenue, this home offers its residents unparalleled access to the world-class shopping and dining Naples offers and is just a short walk to the crystal clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Featuring five bedrooms and five-anda-half baths, this 3,113 square foot home is the perfect place to gather with family and friends for the season or a fantastic full time residence for those looking to leave colder climates altogether. Fully furnished by renowned Sand Dollar and Aurora award-winning designer Kristen Williams, the home beautifully combines the tropical feel of Naples with the Northern appeal of Williams’ Boston home. “I think both aesthetics can come together to create a coastal interior that honors the more tailored, traditional feel you see in the Northeast while still fitting into the relaxed and casual lifestyle people love here in Naples,” Williams explains. “Naples is all about location, both from a national standpoint and a local view,” says Chris Wells, broker at Olde Naples Real Estate and the agent for the Poinciana Cottage. “Everyone wants to be close to the beach and downtown and this home couldn’t be located in a more perfect spot to take advantage of both of those things.” Photography by Michael Owen Photography

Fun pops of color are brought into the space through the succulent artwork and the chandelier in matching soft green tones above the driftwood round table. The ceiling detail is carried throughout the main living areas of the home and incorporate texture and drama to the space.

Williams uses lamps with chinoiserie bases and glass and porcelain accents to add layers to the space. Soft cream bedding with natural fibers invites you to relax and unwind. ••• A guest bedroom provides a cozy space for family and friends. While many four-poster beds can feel heavy, Williams uses one with delicate posts in keeping with the airy feel of the room. Dramatic sconces flank the bed and draw the eye up to the ceiling details and the woven light fixture above. A hide rug anchors the room.

DESIGNER

Q

What interior design trends will we see in 2018? COLOR AND LINES 2018 is an exciting year for color, finally moving away from the long-lasting, monochromatic trend that has dominated the market for too long. People are craving the vitality that color brings to a space, and are eager to opt for bolder choices in fabric hues and furniture finishes. Blues and greens continue to dominate in coastal areas like ours, with navy blue and emerald green becoming the local favorite. And it’s easy to see why— it’s energetic and rich, bringing an air of sophistication and a prosperous vibe to any home. Most blues and greens mix well with botanical and animal prints and compliment outside environments, especially seaside. There is an increased attention to detailing with accents like trims, carvings, nail heads, beading and inlays. Acrylics have juxtaposed modern

14 | YOU R HOME M AGAZIN E

and vintage, showing up everywhere from console tables to bed frames. There is also a movement towards a more feminine sensibility. While Midcentury modern still maintains a stronghold in design, it is taking a more glamorous turn; lines are softening and curves are making their way into both furniture and upholstery.

TEXTURE AND QUALITY Texture is back and layers are in. Plush and fur fabrics were flaunted at High Point Market this year and tufting is still going strong. The velvet trend has transitioned from the fashion world into every room of the home, keeping with the luxurious, indulgent feel. Opulence is the continued trend, with a focus on the practicality of a durable, livable product. The market has responded with furniture pieces and fabrics with vibrant

colors, weaves, and surfaces that are able to withstand the daily wear of and active lifestyle with kids, pets, and the occasional glass of wine! I’m also seeing an eagerness to invest in quality, and sustainability. More than ever, clients are requesting hand-crafted and “small batch” American-made pieces. This is exciting and encouraging, because it allows us to design a truly unique and personal space, while respecting and recognizing the true artistry of the American furniture makers.

WOODS AND METALS There is also a shift toward natural woods. Grey and driftwood tones will still maintain popularity in our area’s homes, but classic browns are definitely making a comeback. Inlays and live-edged woods are shifting into transitional designs, keep-

(OPPOSITE LEFT) Mid-century modern is still popular, but the look is softening, well illustrated in this clear acrylic table base that gives the emerald top a floating illusion. The modern drum shade on the ceiling fixture is wrapped in a more traditional cage, juxtaposing two worlds into one cohesive look. (LEFT) Retro is big—people are looking to old Hollywood for inspiration as shown in this Palm Springs feel bedding and headboard combo in vivid emerald green paired with natural tone animal prints.

ing with the movement towards craftsmanship and higher quality. Metals continue to play a strong role, with the exception of rose gold, which has gone out almost as quickly as it came in. Harmonizing silver and gold finishes in the same room has been embraced by most designers —some doing it better than others. Balancing tone and texture of colors and shades still needs to be cohesive, and it takes a discerning touch to ensure the look is balanced and aesthetically pleasing. Brass, nickel, copper, gold, and silver— have fun with them!

WALLPAPER Wallpaper is back and stronger than ever—but this isn’t your grandmother’s wallpaper! Large scale florals, geometrics, and landscapes in varying palettes continue to dominate. And if you’re hesitant to cover an entire wall, modernized chinoiserie and chintz can be used as art. Framed with beautiful moldings, these art-like panels add texture and depth to a room.

(ABOVE) The femininity and beauty of chinoiserie is back! If you aren’t ready to commit to a whole wall of wallpaper, use decorative moldings to create frames to display the wallpaper like art. (BELOW) Attention to detail and layered textures are huge trends for 2018 and beyond. These pillows showcase how classic trim and embroidery can take on a modern feel.

LOCATION,

LOCATION

The new living room is a complete change from the old, dark space. High ceilings and an open concept allow light to flow through and creates a room that feels ten times bigger than the condo layout.

A

s Southwest Florida becomes an international destination, the housing market becomes increasingly crowded. Because more desirable addresses tend to have the oldest homes, people have to choose between location or a new and fully equipped home. That’s where companies like Genuine Home Builders come in. They make it possible to have the perfect home in the perfect location. Working with clients from the moment they purchase their new home, Kim Todd and the team at Genuine Home Builders create dream homes from ones that leave a lot to be desired aesthetically. Their ability to combine custom home building experience with a full-

service remodeling business gives them a unique perspective as they tackle challenging remodels in homes and condos throughout the area. “Our longevity this field and the market is one of the reasons we are so successful at what we do,” says Todd. “Not only are we able to anticipate problems that might arise at the beginning of the remodel, we are able to see past ugly interiors of all shapes and sizes and create living spaces that will work for our clients’ Naples lifestyles.” An ugly interior was exactly what they were given when they began work on a recent condo remodel. While the new owners loved the location of the condo, water damage from the water heater left a musty smell,

low ceilings made the home feel like a cave, and walls partitioned off the unit, boxing it in and blocking light from the large sliding glass doors. “I knew the home had good bones, and more and more we are meeting with people who’ve bought a home or condo in a location they like and are now trying to find the company who can help them realize their vision for the existing structure. They put a lot of faith in us,” says Todd. After meeting with the new owners and creating a plan based on their budget and vision, work began. Walls were torn down and drop ceiling removed to create an open floor plan. The kitchen represents the most dramatic change in the home. Before, it was a walled off room with poor natural light. The cabinets and “vintage” wallpaper were topped with a low and heavy feeling ceiling that created a less than ideal

cooking and entertaining space. Todd and the new owners worked together to develop a floorplan to open up the room to the rest of the house taking down all the walls and raising the ceiling to create an open space with movement and an abundance of counter area. “We had to work the island around two columns that hide chase ways for the whole building,” Todd explains. “We were able to balance those two columns by adding one more at the opposite end which creates a nice separation between the kitchen and the great room and was a perfect place to put a small bookshelf.” Todd also chose to create a smaller drop ceiling over the island so linear AC vents could be put in the middle of the room to better circulate air throughout the main area of the home. She also created a dry bar for more entertaining and storage space and cre-

ated an open dining room. Just like the kitchen, the living room was small and dark with low ceilings and unappealing carpet. Todd and her team transformed it into a cheerful, modern space by tearing down walls and heightening the ceilings. While Genuine Home Builders isn’t an interior design firm, Todd keeps up with the latest pricing on design elements like flooring and counters so she can provide clients with accurate quotes. “When setting the budget I know what the clients like already because we’ve had so many discussions on their vision for the home, including if they will want wood or tile flooring or if they will be using marble or granite in the home. I work so closely with my vendors that I can provide an accurate cost allowance which is helpful as the clients shop. I don’t want them to fall in love with something that doesn’t fit the budget.” The laundry room is a stroke of remodeling genius. By taking the old bifold doors off the closet that housed the original washer and dryer, Todd was able to put in full-size units and top them with a beautiful counter for folding laundry, along with custom cabinets for storage. Keeping everything white helps it blend unobtrusively into the hall while still giving the owners a dedicated laundry space that functions

18 | YOU R HOM E M AGAZIN E

like its own room. The badly damaged master bath is unrecognizable as it was the center of the water heater leak. Todd and her team stripped away old cabinets and drywall and replaced them with an open concept master bath with a large countertop and double sinks. With ample storage and a sleek new shower, the master bath is now a true retreat. While creating a home within the constraints of an existing structure can be difficult, it’s a rewarding process for Todd. “At the end of the project we were able to deliver the home the clients envisioned in the location they wanted. Everyone was so happy with how it turned out—it shows that with a little imagination and the right team, anything is possible.” A family-owned and operated business, Genuine Home Builders, Inc. is run by husband and wife team Kim and Steve Todd who personally supervise all aspects of each job, providing a personal touch and expertise for their clients. With over 70 years of combined experience in construction, they specialize in custom home remodeling and new home construction.

corner:

ith the new year comes new opportunities and perspectives. A time to make a change you’ve been holding off on—a new job, a healthy lifestyle change, and yes, even a new closet. Through the years we have discovered that fear is the main thing holding people back from making a change in their closets. And it’s understandable. People don’t know where to start and they are also worried about the process and the displacement it can cause in their busy lives. Kitchens, bathrooms, closets—these are the three main areas in our homes we use daily and for many people, the idea of making a change to one of those rooms can be daunting. But it doesn’t have to be. Here are three things I recommend you consider as you think about making some much-needed changes to your storage options in 2018.

20 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E

1

Inspired Design for the New Year

Ask about the design process and what happens after the installation A good closet company will take care of the entire process start to finish. While big box stores offer closet solutions, most of them leave the measurements and storage decisions up to you which can create confusion and stress. Look for a company with trained designers who can understand your lifestyle and needs. Also, ask if someone can come to your house—getting a feel for your style and home goes a long way in closet design. When working with a company, make sure they are up on current trends and have plenty of color and texture options for you to choose from. Coastal and light tones are popular right now but you can make a closet as personalized as you want it to be from colors to accessories.

2

3

Visit their showroom Find a company with a showroom and go see the different styles, colors, and design options in person. Unless you can see it, there’s really no way you can verify the color of the materials a company is using as colors often look completely different when viewed online. It’s also good to feel the quality of a product first hand as you make product decisions with your designer. A showroom can also be a source of inspiration for you as you select accessories and layouts.

Find a company with national quality products and services Look for a company that is accountable to a bigger brand and idea while still being local. Closet companies that represent national brands usually have more training from design to installation. I’m proud to say we have partnered with Inspired Closets to become the only certified dealer in Florida. Inspired Closets is used by designers all over the country and is one of eight sponsors for the 2018 HGTV Dream Home. This is a huge step for us as a company! It also means we will be able to enhance our already great customer service. And that’s what people want—an excellent experience from start to finish and, at the end, a beautiful and functional closet that simplifies their lives.

From the moment I saw my first built-in closet I was in love! As a state licensed general contractor located in Naples, Florida, I had been building and remodeling homes for almost 20 years. I saw the need for a more professional experience in the home organization specialty. Inspired Closets Southwest Florida is here to enrich the lives of its clients by designing organization solutions tailored to your home and lifestyle. Over the years our team has helped thousands of customers in Southwest Florida transform their closets and their lives. We are honored to be a part of your home and look forward to impressing you every step of the way. We value a personal relationship with all of our clients. As a client, you have a dedicated designer who listens to your needs and delivers a custom designed solution in response. Whether you are looking to update your pantry, maximize your laundry room or get the closet of your dreams, our experienced designers are ready to meet you. —H.L. Burkley

a

s we welcome the new year we also welcome new ideas and trends. In the flooring world, wood continues to be a favorite choice and we are seeing a few exciting changes and some old favorites holding strong for 2018. This year brings with it three trends in particular. The first is a return to natural-colored flooring. For years, lighter floors with a natural tone were considered less desirable. That is rapidly changing both in flooring and other interior design aspects. As more homeowners embrace the light, airy feel in their home, we will see a huge resurgence in light wood floors, and this is also made popular by European de-

Legno Bastone | European Elegance Collection | Roma Finish

sign. These light woods, especially European White Oak from France can give your home a more open feel and can make smaller rooms seem larger. The appeal of natural woods is easy to see—your decorating possibilities are endless. You can create a chic, contemporary feel, a Scandinavian vibe, or a rustic, homey space all without changing your floors. Of course, here in Naples, grey and driftwood hues will continue to be popular in 2018. These colors and finishes provide the perfect canvas for your coastal retreat and can be styled to feel more contemporary or rustic depending on the varieties you select. This brings us to the second trend—the

finish and texture on the plank. With the popularity of natural wood comes the need for a simple finish. Hardwax oil-finishing protects the wood and allows the true beauty of the wood’s qualities to shine through. In addition to the finish, wire-brushed hardwood floors are prominent for 2018. This texture is achieved by using a wire brush to remove the soft grain, leaving the heartwood elevated. This process creates a rich texture that highlights the natural patterns in the hardwood. This is also known as “European” style wood flooring. Wire brushing can be done with both hardwood and engineered wood floors. This technique is popular because it hides blemishes. Wire-brushed and etched floors

offer a subtle texture while maintaining a smooth appearance. This helps create a more durable floor that is able to mask mishaps from everyday occurrences. It also reduces the need for maintenance. Although wire-brushed floors still need maintenance to avoid excessive wear and tear, this method reduces the frequency. People with high-gloss flooring are in a constant battle with dirt, debris, and dust, and must sweep or dust daily in order to maintain the finish on standard hardwood floors. Since wire-brushed floors are satin or matte, there is little need to be as diligent about cleaning and dusting your floors. The damage that pet nails would do to ordinary hardwood flooring means that many homeowners feel as though they cannot have a pet and a beautiful hardwood floor at the

26 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E

same time. Blemishes that are usually caused by dogs or cats gaining traction on hardwood floors are hidden due to the finish. With wire-brushed floors, pets and hardwoods can peacefully coexist. Wire brushing also creates a safer floor. Because they are less slick than standard hardwood flooring, there is a lesser risk of slipping. The third and final trend to watch for is super wide plank flooring. These beautiful planks can be up to 17 wide and create a truly custom look. They also allow the grain and color of the wood to shine in it’s purest form and the larger format opens up the size of any room. Whether you are buying a new home or looking to update your existing interior, these flooring options can enhance your space and lay the foundation for a beautiful home.

THE ART OF THE

Glitch By Marlissa Gardner

Trending in the Art Market. What does that mean? It is fashionable and fun to talk about. Mostly, when referring to “trends in the Art Market” the subject focuses on new art forms and the styles within the forms. However, there are many trends today—style (as previously mentioned), business, and industry to name a few. Trends in the art market today and throughout history are mostly a cultural decision and indicate a detectable change in a direction over a period of time. Stylistically, as in any design element, trends are set from the need for a culture to identify with the design, definition, content and even the balance and complexity of the “trend” design form. In today’s world, with the noisiness of the technological world and the constant input of multiple media platforms, we have seen a shift from one art form where complexity, definition and classically trained art were prominent and desired, to a more relaxed and free feel art form where definition is not nec-

essarily needed. In fact simplicity, message driven, emotional and glitch driven art are on the rise. As in any art trend, it is up to the market to decide which artist of the trend will rise to the top and stay. For 2018 it appears that “Glitch” driven art will be the art form to watch. The trend recognizes the human failings and sees them for what they are. The glitch trend enhances emotion, fury and the fast pace in which media driven platforms has defined our society. Where we were once annoyed or distracted by the appearance of what appeared to be a mistake, a lapse or a mis-stroke, we are now enthralled and excited by its visual effect. At Art Basel Miami 2017, the appearance of this new trend was ever present in the new contemporary artworks. It is fascinating and it truly reflects where society has decided to take us. Its focus suggests acceptance of the mistakes we make through emotion on a daily basis.

THE LOOK: NATURALLY NEUTRAL

S

tone, wood, and metals—2018 is shaping up to be the year we return to nature. As the trend of Mid-century modern continues to be a strong one in the design world, we are seeing a shift towards the incorporation of natural materials and a warmer palette. Blush, creams, and warmer grey colors are all making a comeback as the perfect partner to the natural elements. Mixing natural materials into your home doesn’t have to be complicated. One way to achieve this elegant nature-inspired look is to mix metals with wood or stone. A live edge, natural-colored wood tabletop with beautiful metal legs is a great way to begin to incorporate this 2018 (and beyond) trend into your home. A marble or quartz-topped tables with wooden legs and metal details also provides a natural feel. Another way to bring in a natural element is through agate slices. Set to become the “it” accent piece for the home, agate is found primarily in volcanos and is comprised of cryptocrystalline silica and quartz which gives the stone its beautiful grain-like pattern and subtle sparkle. It comes in a wide range of colors and defuses the light much like natural stained glass. Used anywhere from tabletops to chandeliers, sliced agate is a sophisticated and versatile earthy element. Pair it with a polished metal for a beautiful contrast. You can also achieve a natural aesthetic through the colors you choose to bring into the room. Blush with taupe undertones pairs well with the warm colors of natural woods and stone as well as the shine of polished metals. While gray is still popular it is also taking on a warmer feel making “greige” a popular color for walls and fabrics.

DOWNTOWN

Delight A FARMHOUSE FOR THE MODERN WORLD By Ginny Cooper | Photography by Jimmy White

W

hen Emilio Sadez, president of International Design Source, met with David Weekley Homes’ Division President Jeff Waddle about the company’s plan to build a “Modern Farmhouse” he knew international celebrity designer Thom Filicia would be the right designer for the home. “I thought, ‘Hey! This is the right fit’,” recalls Sadez, who had read Filicia’s book American Beauty: Renovating and Decorating a Beloved Retreat and knew the designer’s propensity to create modern, yet meaningful and classic interiors. Filicia readily agreed to serve as the design consultant on the project, saying, “I love being able to connect with neighbors in a walkable environment, to bring energy to a community, and architect Alan Anderson did an amazing job. He was respectful of the neighborhood, making the home feel authentic and appropriate. He was adept at utilizing the lot—I liked the way he connected it to the environment.”

The lot was a challenge for architect Alan Anderson.. “It’s a smaller corner lot so maximizing the size of the house as much as code would allow, was critical. We feel we did this, yet gave the rooms good sizes and created great spaces. Corner lots can be exceptionally challenging, but we embraced this with the corner dining room opening out.” For interior designer Stephanie Nolan, the challenge was to find ways to modernize traditional farmhouse design and make it work in a coastal locale. “We did a Thom Filicia house. I tried to do it from his point of view. I studied his work, asked myself, ‘What would Thom do?’ I took myself out of the equation.” On the first floor, Nolan used blues from Filicia’s fabric collection to convey the coastal ambiance. Upstairs, she says she went “a little more urban, a little unexpected, masculine” in the bonus room. She pulled the whole house together by mixing wood finishes to give it “a collected look” and “added detailing to give it an upscale look.”

T

raditional farmhouse design is evident in the standing seam metal roof, gabled ends, and cedar tongue-and-groove ceilings. The travertine porch floor, five-glass-panel front door, and the dining room’s storefront windows depart from the traditional and give a modern edge to the design. The home by David Weekley Homes features CMU construction (concrete masonry unit) on the first floor and frame on the second. Both stories are covered with HardiePanel vertical siding accented with white brick. YOUR HOME MAG AZ INE | 35

C

risp blue and white dominate the great room, with fabrics from the Thom Filicia collection for Kravet gracing the walls and draperies, covering the seating bench, and sewn into plump pillows nestled on the white Rugby Road sofa and Armory Square upholstered chair, both from the Thom Filicia Home Collection by Vanguard. The cocktail table is actually a pair of triangular-shaped Edgewood Nesting Cocktail Tables in a glossy white finish, also from Vanguard’s Thom Filicia Home Collection. Cobalt blue table lamps from Currey & Co. rest atop twin Drumlins end tables in a mirrored polished stainless steel finish with glass tops. The slender cast aluminum accent table with recessed top in a polished nickel finish is from Prima Design. A white stacked-stone focal wall houses a 42inch gas fireplace. A Feiss Corinne six-light globe pendant provides whole-room light.

collection of top-end stainless steel appliances such as the Thermador wine cooler, Bertazzoni dishwasher, refrigerator, speed oven (electric convection plus microwave), and six-burner dual fuel gas range with the Cattura telescopic downdraft range hood by Best punctuate the simple lines of gleaming white cabinetry. A built-in Bosch coffee machine utilizes a Home Connect app, allowing the homeowner to prepare coffee from anywhere. Appliances are courtesy of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. White wood bar-height dining chairs tuck under the quartztopped kitchen island. The handmade Italian tabletop setting is courtesy of MĂŠlange Home. Overhead a Feiss Jonah chandelier casts a decorative glow, while recessed cans in the tongue-and-groove ceiling and under-cabinet fixtures provide task lighting. The front-facing kitchen window is dressed with a Roman shade from Kravet in a Thom Filicia fabric.

I

n a departure from the pure white walls found elsewhere in the main floor rooms, strips of Montana Ghost Wood in Silver City run horizontally across a dining room accent wall. Natural light pours in from the trio of floor-to-ceiling fixed windows. Colorblocked draperies in a Thom Filicia fabric for Kravet soften the edges. A quartet of Vanguard Thom Felicia Home Collection Brattle Road side chairs featuring polished nickel casters, and top handles, surrounds the 48-inch Brownstone dining table. The mirror-front four-door Vanguard Durston Road sideboard has two shelves, and two drawers with silver liner.

eep, vibrant blues underscore the driftwood tones of the Salt Springs case goods, the pure white tufted headboard of the Chatfield king bed. Custom Euro shams, bed linens, and draperies all feature Thom Filicia fabrics. The ensemble is set against an accent wall painted with Sherwin-Williams Dignity Blue. An area rug from Surya anchors the bed, while a silvery Monte Carlo ceiling fan from the Butterfly collection flutters overhead. Filicia points to the versatility of his collection, saying, “The Chatfield bed, a timeless classic, could be dressed in all white to look fresh, clean, and Floridian, or in sumptuous color to suit an older home or a New York loft.”

D

eluxe finishes and furniture-style, built-in cabinetry give the master bath a decidedly modern, luxurious vibe. Carrera marble lines the floors and faces the walls up to a pencil line wainscoting. In the shower, the marble takes on new dimensions as an inset of basket weave surrounding the high window, and a hexagonal mosaic on the floor. A fullbody spray, as well as a rain head, pours water lavishly into the frameless glass enclosure. The shower’s interior wall creates a nook for the freestanding solid-surface resin tub. Glossy-white plantation shutters filter light and maintain privacy.

ools by Design tucked a 10-by-20-foot custom-built saltwater pool into a corner of the backyard. It features a sheer descent waterfall on a two-foot raised wall at one end. A four-foot-square floating glass-bead fire table is centered on the split sun shelves. One-by-twoinch glass mosaic tile sparkles at the waterline and on the raised wall. A blue LED fixture casts its light on the custom black and blue quartz pool finish. The silvery coping and decking is Turkish travertine. Tropitone outdoor furnishings are arranged around the pool and lanai. “The way the home opens to the outdoor space is one of my favorite features,” says Anderson. “The outdoor kitchen and pool area really expand the space and make the house feel larger than it is.”
