Mastering Home Lighting for Wall Art and Sculptures

Lighting plays a pivotal role in enhancing the beauty and impact of fine art pieces displayed in our homes. Whether it’s a captivating painting or a striking sculpture, the right lighting can transform the way we perceive and appreciate these artistic treasures. In this article, we will explore various tips and ideas for effectively lighting wall art and sculptures, empowering you to create an enchanting ambiance that elevates your home’s aesthetic appeal.

YOUR HOME MAGAZINE® | 3

Understanding the Importance of Proper Lighting

Before delving into lighting techniques, it’s crucial to understand why proper lighting is essential for showcasing fine art. Lighting has the power to highlight textures, colors, and details, providing depth and dimension to artwork. It sets the mood, evokes emotions, and directs the viewer’s focus. By employing appropriate lighting techniques, you can create a harmonious balance between the artwork, its surroundings, and the overall decor.

Natural Light as a Complementary Source

Utilizing natural light in conjunction with artificial lighting can yield remarkable results when illuminating fine art. Position art pieces near windows or skylights to take advantage of natural daylight. However, be cautious of direct sunlight, which can fade or damage artwork over time. Use sheer curtains, blinds, or UV-filtering films to control the intensity of sunlight and protect delicate pieces.

Spotlighting: Directing Attention and Creating Drama

Spotlighting is a popular technique for accentuating specific artwork, creating a focal point, or enhancing the ambiance of a room. Directional track or ceiling-mounted fixtures can be adjusted to illuminate a single piece or a group of artworks. Experiment with different angles and intensities to achieve the desired effect. Adjustable spotlights with narrow beam angles are ideal for highlighting sculptures, while wider beam angles are suitable for larger wall art.

Picture Lights: A Classic Approach

Picture lights are a traditional choice for lighting wall art. These elegant fixtures are mounted above the artwork, casting a soft, downward-directed glow. Picture lights work exceptionally well for smaller paintings and can be adjusted to highlight specific areas or details. Choose fixtures with adjustable arms to ensure proper light distribution, and opt for LED bulbs to minimize heat and reduce the risk of damage

to delicate pieces.

Layering Techniques for Dimension and Depth

To create a visually captivating display, consider incorporating layering techniques. Combining different light sources and intensities adds depth and dimension to artwork. Using wall sconces, recessed lighting, or even floor lamps can contribute to a layered effect. Experiment with warm and cool lighting to set the desired ambiance and evoke specific moods. Dimmers can be used to fine-tune the lighting levels based on the time of day and the desired atmosphere.

Considering Proportions and Scale

When selecting lighting fixtures, it’s important to consider the proportions and scale of the artwork. Avoid overpowering smaller pieces with large or excessively bright lights, as this can detract from the artwork’s impact. Similarly, ensure that larger artworks receive adequate lighting without overpowering the space. Strike a balance by choosing fixtures that complement the size and style of the art while fitting harmoniously within the room.

Properly illuminating fine art within our homes can transform a mere space into a gallery-like environment, elevating the impact of the artwork and enhancing our overall aesthetic experience. By understanding the significance of lighting and employing techniques such as spotlighting, picture lights, layering, and considering proportions, we can create a captivating ambiance that enriches our connection with art. So, go ahead, experiment, and let your fine art shine brightly - it deserves to be admired

But from time to time there are some standouts available and this home, built by Stock Custom Homes, is one of those special properties. The attention to details, the livability, the design - everything comes together to create a really unique home. “While anyone would enjoy living here, I think people looking for that quintessential Florida lifestyle are the ones who will enjoy this spacious property the most,” stay listing agent Crystal Tobe. “It’s really set up for entertaining but entertaining with the outdoors in mind as the outdoor spaces, like the beautiful outdoor kitchen and lanai, are just so special.” The home is also perfect for a growing family, either through their own children or the addition of grandchildren. Situated on an acre lot, the expansive yard is perfect for family activities and the home’s 4-bedroom, 4.5-bath layout allows for separate spaces for family members to relax.

Adding to the home’s special feel is the neighborhood setting. Location in the Quail West Golf & Country Club, this home offers access to a community with lifestyle amenities that rival the best in the country. Residents enjoy a spectacular 100,000-square-foot clubhouse, two-story fitness center and two, beautifully restored Arthur Hills golf courses, pickleball and tennis courts, bocce, indoor lap pool, a full-service spa and more. The

exclusive private club, which has been honored multiple times as Community of the Year, offers a collection of magnificent single-family and estate homes with vistas of green fairways and glistening lakes. Expert Exterior

As you approach the home, you are met with an exterior that showcases exquisite craftsmanship as it offers a nod to transitional West Indies architecture. Just enough visual interest has been added with simple corbels and blue painted shutters. This keeps the look more contemporary as it keeps with the coastal architectural theme. Colorful landscaping with tropical hints pops against the slightly off white tone of the walls while dark wood accents pop and add contrast. A wide paver driveway leads to two, two-car garages that create a half courtyard effect thanks to the home’s almost symmetrical design.

A comfortable seating area is made more visually interesting thanks to the different shapes and lines of the sofa and armchairs. Elegant curves and oversized arms create a unique feel to the room. The home’s design leans more contemporary and the use of neutral colors with well placed accents to colors lends itself well to the theme.

Enhancing Interior Spaces With Sculpture

Indoor sculptures offer a captivating focal point, infusing living spaces with artistry and sophistication. The choice of materials for indoor sculptures is vast, including wood, metal, stone, glass, ceramic, and more. Each material possesses unique qualities, textures, and visual impact, allowing for a wide range of artistic expressions. Wood sculptures exude warmth and organic beauty, while metal sculptures offer a contemporary edge. Stone sculptures convey timeless elegance, and glass sculptures play with light and transparency. When selecting an indoor sculpture, consider the size, style, and aesthetic compatibility with your interior décor. Placement should be strategic, such as on pedestals, in niches, or as standalone pieces, ensuring visibility and complementing the surrounding space.

Selecting a Sculpture You’ll Love

Choosing a sculpture that resonates with your personal taste is a deeply subjective and fulfilling process. Start by exploring different artistic styles, visiting galleries, and attending exhibitions to understand your preferences. Consider the emotional response and connection you feel when viewing a sculpture. It could be a sense of awe, intrigue, or a strong emotional resonance. Pay attention to the narrative, symbolism, and thematic elements that align with your values and interests. Engage with the artist’s backstory and inspiration, as it adds depth and meaning to the artwork. Take your time and trust your instincts when selecting a sculpture that you will love, as it will become a cherished part of your living space.

Sculptural Landscapes

Outdoor sculptures have the power to transform gardens, courtyards, and public spaces into immersive art environments. When placing sculptures outside, it’s essential to consider durability, maintenance, and weather resistance. Materials like bronze, stainless steel, and stone are popular choices due to their ability to withstand the elements. Bronze develops a beautiful patina over time, while stainless steel offers a sleek and contemporary aesthetic. Stone sculptures, such as granite or marble, provide a timeless elegance and harmonize with natural surroundings. Care for outdoor sculptures involves regular cleaning, protection against UV rays, and preventive measures against vandalism or theft. Proper lighting is essential to showcase outdoor sculptures. Utilize landscape lighting techniques that highlight the sculpture’s form and create visual interest after dark. Experiment with uplighting, downlighting, or accent lighting to achieve the desired effect.

YOUR HOME MAGAZINE® | 17

Caring for Outdoor Sculptures

Outdoor sculptures are exposed to various weather conditions, requiring careful maintenance and preservation. To protect against deterioration, apply a protective sealant or coating specific to the sculpture’s material. Regular cleaning using mild detergents and soft brushes helps remove dirt, algae, or debris. Periodic inspections are essential to identify any damage or signs of wear, addressing them promptly. In colder climates, protect sculptures from freeze-thaw cycles by covering or relocating them during harsh winter months. Consult with professionals or conservation experts for specific care guidelines based on the sculpture’s material and environmental conditions. Choosing the right material for an outdoor sculpture also plays heavily into the care you will have to provide. Bronze is renowned for its longevity, resistance to corrosion, and ability to develop a beautiful patina. Stainless steel boasts excellent weather resistance, offering a sleek and modern appeal. Stone sculptures, particularly granite or marble, endure the test of time and harmonize with nature. Fiberglass and resin provide lightweight options with considerable durability.

Exploring Contemporary and Conceptual Sculptures

Contemporary sculpture encompasses a diverse range of styles, techniques, and concepts. Artists today often push the boundaries of traditional sculpture, experimenting with unconventional materials, installation art, and conceptual approaches. Contemporary sculptures may incorporate mixed media, found objects, or even technology to challenge traditional notions of form and materiality. Conceptual sculptures focus on ideas, narratives, and intellectual engagement, provoking viewers to question and interpret the artwork’s underlying concepts. These sculptures often prioritize concept over aesthetics, challenging our preconceived notions of art and expanding the boundaries of artistic expression.

Commissioning Custom Sculptures

Commissioning a custom sculpture allows individuals or organizations to acquire unique and personalized artworks that align with their vision and specific requirements. Custom sculptures can be tailored to fit a specific space, reflect the identity of a business or community, or commemorate a special event. Collaborating with the artist throughout the creative process ensures that the final sculpture meets the desired objectives and captures the intended essence. Commissioned sculptures provide an opportunity for dialogue and a deeper connection between the artist, the commissioner, and the viewers, resulting in a truly one-of-a-kind art piece.

A Taylor Morrison community, the Esplanade Lake Club offers resort-style living on 778 acres along Lake Como in Fort Myers. A preferred builder, Seagate Development Group is a full-service residential and commercial real estate development and construction company. They bring together ingenuity and experience with the expertise and desire to deliver the highest quality product and a customer experience that exceeds industry standards. That desire to offer their clients the best led to the creation of Theory Design. A collaboration with Seagate Development Group, Theory Design now fills the need to lend a unique design approach to the fast-growing list of building projects. This talented and spirited team collaborates on a multi-level approach to provide the best-designed products for their clients, and is responsible for the great design found in the Genova model.

The 6,008 square foot home features four bedrooms plus a study, four full and two half baths, and a three-car garage. The spacious home takes advantage of the water views and offers a large outdoor living area perfect for entertaining, often cooled by the lake breeze.

Contemporary Shine

The home’s exterior perfectly embodies the coastal modern design that so many buyers look for when they come to Southwest Florida. The clean lines and finishes used are complemented by Bahama shutters and a flat, slate tile roof. Seagate Development Group is known for using flat tiles instead of barrel tiles, which can read Mediterranean and sometimes look dated if not used correctly. Lighting choices have been kept sleek to match the home’s architectural style.

Art, rugs, and accessories are mixed with natural fabrics and organic tones to create a restful interior. This combination creates a design infusion that is on trend with global influence in interior design that has been so popular this year. A feature wall of vertical, handmade, and hand-applied stained wood slats adds texture to the room. The 14-foot tall ceilings are enhanced by reverse soffits that are lit with LEDs to create more visual interest in the room. Furniture throughout the home, but especially in the great room, has been kept neutral with the selected fabrics and wood accents. Sightlines to the amazing lanai and the lake beyond were kept open through the low furniture. White oak floors with a grey wash anchor the space.

At the center of the home, the kitchen continues the theme of natural colors and textures, as well as globally-inspired design. The counters are a favorite of the design team. Finished in a leathered texture, the natural quartzite has also been applied to the window wall behind the natural gas range for a dramatic design effect. All the slabs have been mitered and book-matched so the veins are perfectly conjoined. Lower cabinets are finished in a natural, warm grey tone while upper cabinets have a dark, espresso finish with glass doors covering the lit display shelves. Over the large island, well-sized pendant lights help to fill in the space between the ceiling and counter, as well as provide light to the prep area.

Entertaining Central

A wet bar located in the dining room functions as a drink center and a buffet for storage and serving. Plenty of glass-fronted, backlit shelves house glasses, while cabinets hide dishes and other necessities. The same book-matched quartzite used in the kitchen has been brought into the wet bar and dining room for a cohesive look. The solid wood table is an almost ebony color and is surrounded by linen-clad chairs. The frames of the chairs are slim, which helps to balance the weight of the table which can seat ten comfortably.

Organic Retreat

Large windows frame the pool and Lake Como, and a comfortable sitting area takes full advantage of the sun and view. Ged and Thompson chose darker furniture in a true ebony, finished with hammered metal hardware for a little shine. The furniture grounds the light and airy space and complements the soft grey tones used throughout. The color of the wood floors and the patterns used in the room, like the one on the area rug, reinforce the global theme. Above, a reverse soffit has been added along with a fun, multidimensional light.

Spa Space

In the bathroom, subtle finishes take the stage. A relaxing space, the master bath continues global feel and takes advantage of unique textures. In addition to a beautiful grasscloth wall covering, matching tile has been applied to the walls of the room and the shower. The grooved texture is unique and adds to the beauty of the tile. A freestanding, rectangular tub is contemporary and is complemented by the low armchair with a bamboo seat and back. The vessel sink sits on top of a dark wood, floating vanity, which matches the mirror’s trim color and the Bahama shutter. A rug with a modern tribal pattern adds more texture to the room.

Unique Touches

A mix of warm and cool tones, the tile complements the natural stone that tops the sleek and floating riffed-oak vanity. A natural, fiber wallpaper is used in the rest of the room and has a slight shimmer, bouncing light through the room. The team found the perfect art for this space which helps to tie cool and warm together. Wall mounted, black, metal fixtures and sconces, and the custom framed mirror are the perfect final touches.

Outdoor Life

A shellstone floor, similar to the one in the master bathroom, sets the stage for the rest of the finishes in the large outdoor space. A tough stone that works well indoors and out, shellstone can match a myriad of design styles. Just off the home’s indoor dining room, the outdoor dining area is placed where the large, corner pocketing glass doors open for a seamless entertaining experience. A table for eight is surrounded by woven back chairs that are outdoor-friendly for easy maintenance. Light fabrics complement the colors inside. The outdoor kitchen features a waterfall edge island with LED lighting and granite countertops. Ged and Thompson chose one tile and used it to cover the hood and wall of the outdoor kitchen, creating a sleek and clean look. A stained wood tongue and groove ceiling brings in warmth. The seating area, with sofa and four oversized chairs flanks a see-through fireplace which can also be enjoyed from the pool area. The whole space can be enclosed with automatic rolling screens to provide bug protection, making it a year-round room. A water feature, spa, and sun shelf help to make the pool feel like one found in the best of local resorts.

The Art of Buying Fine Art at Auction

Before attending an auction, thorough research and preparation are crucial. Start by familiarizing yourself with the auction house’s reputation, specialty areas, and upcoming auctions. Explore their catalog or website to preview the available artworks. Research the artists, their styles, and their market value. Attend previews or exhibitions to view the artworks in person, examining their condition, quality, and authenticity. Additionally, establish a budget and stick to it, considering not just the purchase price but also any additional fees.

The first step is identifying and evaluating artworks. When evaluating artworks at an auction, several factors should be considered. Assess the artist’s reputation, career trajectory, and market demand. Evaluate the condition and quality of the artwork, looking for any signs of damage, restoration, or authenticity issues. Examine the provenance, which is the documented history of ownership. Additionally, consider the aesthetic appeal and personal connection you feel with the artwork. Trust your instincts and acquire pieces that resonate with you emotionally and intellectually.

Developing effective bidding strategies is crucial to successfully acquire fine art at auction. Start by familiarizing yourself with the auctioneer’s style and rhythm during the auction preview. Set your maximum bid in advance, and avoid getting caught up in the excitement of the moment. Consider bidding incrementally, using smaller increases to conserve your budget until necessary. Quick, confident bids can deter competition, while slow, deliberate bidding can convey determination.

During the auction, it’s important to maintain focus and composure. Register in advance to receive a bidding paddle or number, which identifies you as a registered bidder.

Buying fine art at auction can be an exhilarating and rewarding experience for art enthusiasts and collectors alike. Auction houses provide a platform for acquiring unique and valuable artworks, ranging from established masterpieces to emerging talents. However, navigating the auction process can seem daunting for first-time buyers.
In this article, we will guide you through the intricacies of buying fine art at auction, offering valuable insights on what to look for, how to bid effectively, and what to expect during the exhilarating auction experience.
28 | YOUR HOME MAGAZINE®

Find a comfortable spot where you have a clear view of the auctioneer and the artworks being presented. Listen carefully to the auctioneer’s descriptions and bidding instructions. When your desired artwork comes up for bidding, raise your paddle or clearly signal your bid. Remain attentive and responsive to competing bids, adapting your strategy as needed.

Understanding auction terminology and fees and familiarizing yourself with common auction terminology to better understand the process. Key terms include “hammer price” (the final price at which the artwork is sold), “buyer’s premium” (a percentage fee added to the hammer price), and “reserve price” (the minimum price at which the seller is willing to sell the artwork). Be aware of additional fees, such as taxes, shipping, or insurance costs, which may apply after the purchase.

Once you’ve successfully acquired an artwork at auction, follow the auction house’s instructions for payment and collection. Typically, payment is required shortly after the auction, and arrangements for shipping or collection can be made. Retain all documentation related to the purchase, including invoices, certificates of authenticity, and provenance records. Consider insuring your newly acquired artwork to safeguard your investment.

Buying fine art at auction can be an exhilarating journey that opens doors to remarkable artistic discoveries. By conducting thorough research, evaluating artworks carefully, and employing effective bidding strategies, you can navigate the auction process with confidence and success.

Online Auction

The process is much the same for an online auction. These virtual platforms offer a treasure trove of artistic masterpieces waiting to find new homes. However, diving into the realm of online art auctions can be a daunting task for newcomers. To make your online auction experience a success, explore reputable online auction platforms, examine catalogs, and set a budget before you decide to buy. Verify the authenticity of the artwork through thorough research. Pay attention to provenance, certificates of authenticity, and the reputation of the seller or auction house. You will also want to scrutinize the provided condition reports and high-resolution images. Zoom in to examine details, surfaces, and signatures. Seek additional information if needed. Determine your maximum bid and be disciplined and set a bidding limit. Resist the temptation to get caught up in the excitement of the auction. Consider utilizing proxy bids to stay competitive. Consider attending online previews, asking questions, and engaging with auction specialists before the actual auction. Absorb their knowledge and expertise to make informed decisions. Finally, understand the payment process, accepted forms of payment, and shipping options. Insure your artwork during transit.

Contemporary Welcome

The home’s exterior received new landscaping to create a look that better suits the inside of the home and the Siegals’ personal tastes, thanks to Jeff Edwards, the founder, owner, and lead designer at Bloomwater. “As you approach the home, Bonnie wanted the landscaping to better reflect the design inside,” says Edwards. “I came up with a plan that is cohesive with clean and contemporary lines. This lends a less tropical and more modern feel to the home’s exterior.” This look is achieved through the vegitation Edwards chose as well as custom planters that feature a mix of cement and metal that contrasts with the natural landscape. An inlay of artificial turf in the driveway also makes the beds appear larger and more substantial than they originally were for a high-end look. Topiary gives height and balance but has been sculpted in a more modern, square shape.

The Process of Personalization

Naples is a transient city. People come and go seasonally as well as moving from condos to single family homes, from beachfront properties to Golf communities. Change in real estate is a constant for many residents, including the owners of this single family home in North Naples. After a few years of visiting seasonally, the Siegals we ready to

spend more time in the area and felt they were ready to upgrade to a larger home, one that would fit their growing family as children marry and grandchildren are added to the family. They loved the location of their original Naples home, in Tiburón, and wanted to find a new one close by to keep them near the many friends they had made in the community. Luckily, through a

Elegant entry

One of the biggest changes in the entry is the decorative wall Jacque Lindstrom designed. “There was a skinny, somewhat awkward wall here so I wanted to create a visual piece that gave the formal dining room a little separation while also adding something to the home,” says Lindstrom. The focal point of the entryway, and the home as a whole, is it’s unique lighting elements chosen by Siegal. The beautiful John Richard chandelier features gold branches dripping with glass leaves and is complemented by the gold painted tray ceiling. “The color is really fabulous and is completely custom,” says both Lindstrom and Siegal. “It took quite a while to get that color correct and it was a process to create the layers that make the tone so unique.” On the wall, a photo taken by Siegal’s husband, an avid photographer, adds a pop of color and a personal touch to the home.

few fortuitous events, they were able to purchase a lot in an adjacent community that backs up to Tiburón on the other side of a private preserve.

Homeowner Bonnie Siegal says, “The lot is one of the biggest in the community. It’s over half an acre so we knew when we purchased it we wanted to create an outside area that took advantage of all the space the lot provides.” During the building process, the Siegals were unable to see a model, so they built the home “sight unseen” so to speak, going off of plans, small samples, and their imagination. When it was finished, they were happy with the neighborhood and the home’s layout (for the most part), but felt that the finishes weren’t up to their standard or those found in their other residence. “We talked about a variety of different options but ultimately decided to renovate our newly completed home,” says Siegal.

That led them to their second renovation in about as many years. Partnering with friend and designer Jacque Lindstrom, owner and lead designer at LS Lindstrom LLC, and Wayne Wisher from Silver Dollar Construction, they set out to create a customized home that perfectly reflects the Siegals’ personal style. “Jacque and I had recently worked together on our home up North and I enjoyed working with her through that process,” explains Siegal. “I knew I wanted her help with my Florida home. Also, with that last project still fresh in my mind, I was able to take what I had learned about renovation and apply it to this new project.” The end result is a contemporary glamorous space that represents the owner’s style and personality.

Exquisite Dining

The dining room is bright and open with neutral colors complemented by blue and gold. The large table features a sturdy base of polished gold topped with glass to keep the room open and modern. Throughout the home, Siegal sourced the accessories, like the cobalt blue bowls that top the table. Above, a second John Richard chandelier references the one in the entry while offering a different take on the natural, yet glamorous mix of gold and glass. “The photos here were also taken by my husband, as are most of the photos throughout the house,” says Siegal. “He’s a retired surgeon who has always loved photography and we both wanted to feature his work in our new home to personalize the space. It also helps us create a more contemporary feel in our Naples home, which was something we really wanted as we worked with Jacque.”

The Inspired Chef

After removing the original cabinets, fixtures, and appliances, Lindstrom was able to start with a blank slate to create a kitchen filled with high-end finishes and a design that is functional as well as beautiful. She says, “Functionality is a hallmark of my kitchen design. I always create spaces that are both workable and beautiful, so this kitchen is no exception.” The island was reworked to help with the flow and was designed to be a more visually pleasing piece. Topped with thick Cristallo quartzite, it has a weight to it that anchors the kitchen. A unique enameled steel hood with polished brass accents is flanked by custom cabinets designed by Lindstrom.

Above the island, Lindstrom selected pendants that fill the airspace creating a dramatic effect. “The light in the kitchen needed to work with the beautiful custom hood while not fighting with the other great selections in the home,” says Lindstrom. Sub Zero and Wolf appliances complete this chef-inspired kitchen.

Personal Perfection

“The Siegals wanted to create a home that reflected their impeccable personal style while also offering their family a place to gather,” says Lindstrom. The great room features a large sectional covered with comfortable, custom pillows, and two elegant Italian leather chairs with swooping lines. Behind the TV, the focal wall has been covered in a textured, navy blue wallpaper that is extended behind the lit, built-in shelves which helps the beautiful accessories pop. “The TV stand, from FreeMarc, is a great example of how elements in the home that weren’t fully ‘custom’ were customized to fit the tastes of the homeowners,” Lindstrom explains. “The original top and legs were too dark and so I had them replaced so they perfectly match the silver of the doors for a more cohesive look.” The large chandelier in the room continues the home’s theme of amazing lighting. “Bonnie approaches design with intelligence and a great sense of personal style, so as she chose things for the home, especially the lighting, my only job was to make sure they fit the scale of the room. Many times homeowners, or even designers, will pick lighting that’s too small for the space. I was there to advise her on dimensions as she made her selections but I loved the lighting she was choosing so I was more than happy to sign off on her selections!”

Masterful Respite

In the master bedroom, the furniture by Baker caused a bit of a delay. “We were ordering so many things during the height of the pandemic that we experienced some hold ups that no one could have predicted,” Siegal explains. While the dresser and side tables were finished and ready to be delivered, the hardware was held up for months. Once they arrived however, they worked perfectly with the soft blue, padded headboard and the subtle sunburst wallpaper. Custom bedding from Clive Daniel and a beautiful silk rug add luxurious texture to the room. On the ceiling, a custom blue paint, created to complement the headboard and armchair, ties the room together.

Spa Style

The master bathroom went through the biggest transformation as the entire layout was reworked and the room taken down to the studs to accomplish the redesign. “We just were not a fan of the original plans on paper, and once we got into the home it was not at all what we wanted to live with long term,” says Siegal. The shower, which had a more industrial scale, was moved to its current location and brought down to a more appropriate residential bathroom size. A new, seamless shower door and the zero edge shower stall add to the high-end feel of the space. The small tub was replaced by a beautiful one from Victoria + Albert which is an improvement in both design and scale. A new vanity was placed under the three windows and Lindstrom added beautiful millwork to tie the mirrors and the windows together for a custom touch. Thick marble counters offer a great workspace and the plethora of drawers and cabinets provide plenty of storage for the couple. Marble and porcelain tiles were used on the floor and in the shower to create a clean, spa-like bathroom.

Outdoor Entertainment

“The size and shape of the lot gave us room to do something interesting outside, but the open areas are on the side of the home,” says Siegal. With those open spaces, landscape designer Jeff Edwards took one of the family’s fun activities, golf, and brought it home. A four hole putting green was added so the Siegals could enjoy time together, practice their putting, and entertain friends with ease. Marble pavers lead to a seating area that doubles as a dance floor for parties. Shrubs and hedges were added around the putting green and sitting area for privacy, something the Siegals made sure Edwards included in his designs.

Aquatic Oasis

The outdoor living areas of the home shine thanks to thoughtfully designed seating areas and beautiful landscaping. Siegal and her husband made a trip to Restoration Hardware to customize the outdoor furniture. Ceiling fans were swapped for a more design-forward look and now match the stained wood ceilings. The outdoor kitchen was customized to create a better cooking experience, thanks to the Outdoor Kitchen Place. Siegal added two burners next to the grill so they could also cook outside (not just grill) and the cabinets were refinished to create a more weather-proof exterior. ClearView screens keep the view of the preserve behind the home open and landscaping touches around the pool, along with water features, finish the welcoming lanai.

Delicious French Recipes

Coq au Vin

MAKES: 4 Servings

8 ounces bacon, cut into 2-inch pieces

3½ pounds bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs and drumsticks, about 8 total

Kosher salt, plus more for serving

4 cloves garlic, minced

4 shallots, quartered

4 sprigs thyme

1 bay leaf

2 tablespoons tomato paste

3 large carrots, peeled, halved lengthwise, and cut into 3-inch pieces

2 cups chicken stock

½ bottle red wine (like Rioja)

3 tablespoons salted butter, melted

3 tablespoons flour

1 pound cremini mushrooms, quartered

Freshly cracked black pepper

Preheat the oven to 350°F with a rack in the center position. In a braiser or Dutch oven, add the bacon and cook over medium heat for 8 to 10 minutes, or until crispy. Using tongs, transfer the bacon to a paper-towel-lined plate. Reserve 2 tablespoons of bacon fat, discard the rest.

Season chicken all over with salt. Add the chicken to the pot and cook over medium heat until browned, about 5 minutes. Work in batches to ensure even browning. Transfer browned chicken to a plate.

To the same pot, add the garlic, shallots, thyme, bay leaf, tomato paste, and cooked bacon. Cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute.

Return chicken to the pot, skin-sides up. Nestle the carrots around the chicken and pour in the chicken stock and wine. Bring to a simmer, then cover and transfer to the oven. Braise for 30 minutes. Remove from the oven.

In a small bowl, combine the melted butter with flour and stir in ¼ cup braising liquid. Pour mixture into the sauce and gently stir to combine. Add the mushrooms to the pot, cover and cook over medium heat for about another 10 minutes, or until the chicken registers 165°F on an instant read thermometer. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Easy Pot de Creme

MAKES: 6 Servings

1 cup heavy cream

1 cup whole milk

5 large egg yolks

6 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped

½ teaspoon espresso powder (optional)

¼ teaspoon kosher salt

Chopped hazelnuts for garnish

Add the heavy cream and milk to a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk occasionally until it just starts to simmer with bubbles along the edges, then remove from the heat.

Whisk the egg yolks in a medium bowl. While continuously whisking, very slowly pour half of the hot cream mixture into the bowl. Don’t pour too fast or the eggs will curdle. Return the tempered egg mixture to the saucepan and stir together over medium-low heat for 1 to 2 minutes, or until the custard is slightly thickened. Turn off the heat.

Add the chopped chocolate, espresso powder (if using), and salt to the custard. Let the chocolate melt for a minute, then whisk until it’s completely smooth.

Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a separate bowl (or measuring bowl with a pour spout), to remove any clumps and bubbles.

Pour the custard into six 4-ounce ramekins and refrigerate until chilled, about 2 hours.

When ready to serve, let the pots de crème stand at room temperature for 15 minutes, to soften slightly.

Garnish with hazelnuts, whipped cream, chocolate shavings, raspberries - the choice is yours!

Ratatouille

MAKES: 8 Servings

VEGGIES

2 eggplants

6 roma tomatoes

2 yellow squashes

2 zucchinis

Herb Seasoning

2 tablespoons thinly

sliced fresh basil

1 teaspoon minced garlic

2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley

2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves

kosher salt, to taste

freshly ground black pepper, to taste

4 tablespoons olive oil

SAUCE

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium white onion, diced

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced

1 yellow bell pepper, seeded and diced

kosher salt, to taste

freshly ground black pepper, to taste

28 oz crushed tomatoes

2 tablespoons thinly sliced fresh basil

Preheat the oven for 375˚F. Using a sharp knife or a mandoline, slice the eggplant, tomatoes, squash, and zucchini into approximately ¹⁄₁₆-inch (1-mm)-thick rounds, then set aside.

Make the sauce: Heat the olive oil in a 12-inch (30-cm) oven-safe pan over medium-high heat. Sauté the onion, garlic, and bell peppers until soft, about 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, then add the crushed tomatoes. Stir until the ingredients are fully incorporated. Remove from heat, then add the basil. Stir once more, then smooth the surface of the sauce with a spatula.

Arrange the veggies in alternating slices, (for example, eggplant, tomato, squash, zucchini) on top of the sauce, working from the outer edge to the center of the pan.

Season with salt and pepper.

Make the herb seasoning: In a small bowl, mix together the basil, garlic, parsley, thyme, salt, pepper, and olive oil. Spoon the herb seasoning over the vegetables. Cover the pan with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Uncover, then bake for another 20 minutes, until the vegetables are softened.

Serve hot as a main dish or side. The ratatouille is also excellent the next day–cover with foil and reheat in a 350˚F oven for 15 minutes, or simply microwave to desired temperature.

Tomato Galette

MAKES: 4 Servings

4 servings

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting

2¼ tsp. kosher salt, divided

¾ cup (1½ sticks) chilled unsalted butter, cut into pieces

1 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar

1½ lb. heirloom tomatoes, sliced ¼” thick

2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced

4 oz. firm cheese (such as Asiago, cheddar, or Gouda), finely grated (about 1½ cups)

1 large egg, beaten to blend

Flaky sea salt

Freshly ground black pepper

½ lemon

1 Tbsp. finely chopped chives

Pulse 2 cups of flour and 1¼ tsps. of kosher salt in a food processor to combine. Add butter and pulse until mixture resembles coarse meal with a few pea-size pieces of butter remaining.

Transfer mixture to a large bowl and drizzle with vinegar and ¼ cup ice water. Mix with a fork, adding more ice water by the tablespoonful as needed, just until a shaggy dough comes together. Turn out onto a work surface and lightly knead until no dry spots remain (be careful not to overwork). Pat into a disk and wrap in plastic. Chill for at least 2 hours.

Preheat the oven to 400°. Gently toss tomatoes, garlic, and remaining 1 tsp. kosher salt in a large bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes (tomatoes will start releasing some liquid). Drain tomato mixture and transfer to paper towels.

Unwrap dough and roll out on a lightly floured sheet of parchment paper to a 14” round about ⅛” thick. Transfer on parchment to a baking sheet. Scatter cheese over dough, leaving a 1½” border. Arrange tomatoes and garlic over cheese. Bring edges of dough up and over filling, overlapping as needed to create about a 1½” border; brush dough with egg. Sprinkle tomatoes with sea salt and pepper. Chill in the freezer for 10 minutes.

Bake galette, rotating once, until crust is golden brown and cooked through, 55–65 minutes. Let cool slightly on a baking sheet. Finely grate zest from lemon over galette; sprinkle with chives.

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Bring a large pot of water to a boil and season with salt generously. Add the green beans and blanch for 4-5 minutes until crisp-tender. They should be slightly undercooked and squeaky between your teeth.

Meanwhile, melt the butter in a large fry pan over medium-low heat. Once melted, the butter will start to simmer and foam. This should take about 3 minutes. Eventually the butter will stop foaming. Keep a close eye on it and watch for golden specks to form at the bottom of the pan. Smell the butter for nutty aromas. This should take about 3-4 minutes. Immediately add the toasted almonds and turn the heat to low.

Toast the almonds, stirring occasionally, until golden, for about 2-3 minutes. Add shallots and garlic, and saute for 2 more minutes, until shallot is soft and fragrant.

Using a large slotted spoon or kitchen tongs, transfer the par-cooked green beans directly from the boiling water to the fry pan. Toss them gently until glossy and evenly coated with Almondine garnish. Add lemon zest and juice, and toss again. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and serve.
