Delray Beach Charmer Introduces Modern Spatial Elegance
M
any stunning elements characterize this transitional architectural masterpiece with a style that’s as unique as it is innovative. Nestled in Delray Beach, touted online as one of the most fun small town in the USA, it is a must-visit city and home to this four-bedroom, five-bath, 3,997-square-foot home was built in 2017 and showcases a private gate, two garages, high-ceiling interiors with walls of glass, and 12-foot retractable floor-to-ceiling glass doors. The state-of-the-art epicurean kitchen is equipped with high-gloss Italian cabinetry, marble countertops, and Thermador Appliances. Additional amenities include a whole-house generator, fully equipped outdoor kitchen with marble countertops, sparkling saltwater lap pool, and a separate glass surround guest/cabana house complete with kitchenette and bath.
One-Of-A-Kind Wonder
A single-story, block-style home features unparalleled panoramic views of the outdoors with colorful foliage that perfectly accents this architectural beauty. Its sprawling uniqueness adds to its appeal. The home is described as ‘industrial modern’ and shaped like a large horseshoe, with two garages on either side and glass windows all the way around. The property itself is fenced in, with doors that automatically open to the entry of the home to welcome guests and family alike. An abundance of greenery surrounds the residence and gives it a tropical feel.
Clive Daniel Home (CDH) interior designer Inaam Johnson, based out of the Boca Raton showroom, met with the owners while they were still living in their high-rise Fort Lauderdale beach condo. “They didn’t take me to this house until after they purchased it, toward the end of 2020,” Johnson explains. “It took about a year-and-a-half to finish the project, and was really a concept between the couple and myself. They were very specific as far as color—shades of blue and turquoise, and avocado green—and wanted to match their own artwork to the furnishings.” The designer calls this home ‘transitional with a coastal feel’ (and with ‘a coastal chic look’) and points out that it was very challenging to pull all of the colors together. In particular, “there were so many light fixtures and chandeliers [that the clients brought with them] that I needed to find a way for these elements to blend with both each other and the overall design, not fight with each other.” Johnson’s favorite room is the piano room, with its Steinway grand piano, butterfly artwork, and combination of colors that work so well together. Her overall goal? “To make sure that my clients were happy.”

Notes Of Lovelyness
As you walk into the home, the piano room sits to your right while to the left is the dining room. Here, a dazzling ceiling lighting fixture, brought by the owners, is shaped like a symmetrical star snowflake designed in silver with bulbs inside and pieces of crystal extending out. It serves as a captivating focal point while the grand Steinway piano speaks of refinement and luxury. “The owner loves playing the piano,” Johnson expresses. Bringing in hues of blue, avocado green, and silver through the accessories, the room emanates a lively vibe that the decorative butterfly artwork, also brought by the owners, enhances. The striking sofas are by Thayer Coggin and the glass etagere cabinet is by Century Furniture. Light wood flooring has been installed throughout the home and the area rug in shades of avocado green and turquoise blue, as well as all of the carpeting in the residence, was brought by the owners. A large picture window reveals tropical palms indicati ve of South Florida vegetation.
The Panoramic Picture Chairs and artwork carry the blue and green palette into the family room, where a linear, white-sand sectional sofa blends crisply with the other components of this open, vibrant room. The lamp and the table beneath it are Clive Daniel Home showroom originals and the colorful chairs were reupholstered by CDH. Century Furniture designed the end table and console. The futuristic fan again demonstrates the upscale, contemporary taste of the owners. While the door to the right leads to the powder room and storage linen closet, the door to the left leads to the master suite.

Blue With Envy
Predominantly displayed aqua and turquoise furnishings and artwork distinguish the dining area and give it an inviting feel. The dining table, chairs, and buffet were designed by Century Furniture, while accessories are CDH showroom creations. Another large picture window, a prevalent feature, streams in daylight. The eye-catching lighting fixture, again provided by the owners, is an exceptional inclusion. Between the two large paintings is a lovely mirror, framed in brushed silver metal, which provides a centerpiece to the paintings that flank it.

Glass With Impact
Another view of the family room unveils a modern, circular glass table and chairs, and accessories in the flowing blue and green hues, brought in by the clients. Atop the table is a thriving plant, again emphasizing the concept of bringing the outside in. Glass walls reveal and lead to the outdoor seating arrangement. The pool house, just outside, is all glass and opens up completely. Clean lines and a lavish look come to mind when walking into this room.
A Chef ’s Cornerstone
Modern, Thermador stainless steel appliances make preparing delicious meals a breeze. White is prevalent throughout and brightens up the epicurean kitchen, designed with high-gloss Italian cabinetry and marble countertops. Only the addition of accessories, all by CDH, on the shelves and on the island top was needed in this room. Elegant drop lighting creates a serene mood while cooking up tasty culinary delights.

Slumber Ready
The eye is drawn to a lovely king-size bed, designed with a regal headboard in a beige hue and showcasing a dramatic painting above in shades of blue. All of the furnishings are by Adrianna Hoyos, including the nightstands and desk, and the ottoman at the foot of the bed. The bedding, adorned by vibrant blue throw pillows, and table lamps, were introduced by CDH. Windows on either side of the bed and expansive, sliding glass doors which highlight the outside view and overlook the side patio that leads to the pool house, impart tranquility. The versatile desk and unusually shaped elongated chair, constructed in the same shade as the furnishings and ottoman, offer a comfy place for reflection. A simple, yet striking fan exhibits originality.
Splash Of Refinement
Distinctive, futuristic cone and sphere lighting, and an inviting tub, distinguish this bath from the ordinary and gave the clients yet another reason to fall in love with the home. Views of the outdoors are again front and center and add a natural ingredient to the master bath. The light wood flooring complements the white tub and vanity, while the contemporary hardware brings an updated look to a traditional-styled bathtub.

Airy Sectional Seating
Enhancing the ambience of its surroundings is the function of this outdoor seating area. An ensemble of cozy, relaxing blue-hued sofas and chairs, all facing each other, call guests and family alike to gather to discuss the day’s activities or make plans for future events. Attractive tile and stone flooring exemplifies the splendid aesthetic of the exterior. The horseshoe shape of the home is on display in this outdoor space and demonstrates the architecturally innovative design of the property.

Al Fresco Allure
Basic patio furnishings in shades of avocado green and white fit superbly on the patio, which reveals the horseshoe shape of the residence and leads to the pool house. The built-in outdoor kitchen, complete with marble countertops and full cooking capabilities is the ideal spot for entertaining. Other indulgences that are guaranteed to bring a smile to the faces of friends and relatives include a sizable sparkling saltwater lap pool and a separate glass-surround guest cabana house appointed with kitchenette and bath.

Productive Setting
Taking care of business has never been more delightful—or more enticing. Johnson took special care to mix and match artwork, like the collage above the desk, with accessories, including the dark built-in shelves holding accouterments in the residence’s color scheme. This space was originally a hallway that the designer turned into an office. The desk and side console were custom-built and feature marble tops. This interestingly appointed office again brings the outside in with corner sliding glass doors and a tall, exotic planter in natural shades.

Simple Sophistication By Kitt Walsh | Photography by Diana Todorova/Diana Todorova Photography
Love at first sight isn’t just a romantic myth. Just ask Laurie Walter. Surfing the web one evening, a condo for sale in Naples’ prestigious Pelican Bay caught her eye and she made a beeline to the open house being held the next day. “Though there were three couples at the event, all considering buying the place, the minute I walked in, I found the Realtor and told her, “I’ll take it.” An offer above asking price sealed the deal and Walter had bought herself a condo. “The original owners were nonagenarians (90 years old) and had been snowbirds since the 90’s,” Walter relates. “They were headed back to Wisconsin and I was headed right for the phone to set up my Contractor Brian Raymond of Naples Kitchen and Bath. My son got dragooned into helping pull-down drywall and window treatments. I challenged everyone with a four-month completion deadline, a tight window during the best of times, but during Covid, it smacked of the impossible. But we made the deadline and I moved in the day after Hurricane Ian.”
The Kitchen Before: The backlit ceiling with its large cove and the slatted cabinets were all the rage when the condo was first built in the 1990’s. The kitchen counters and backsplash of dark speckled stone, along with the column that separated the space from the dining room, had the effect of making the kitchen seem smaller. The floral wall tile and the beige floor tiles struck a discordant note.
12 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E®
The Kitchen After: A kitchen island was at the top of Walter’s wish list for her new kitchen. By removing the U-shaped countertop and getting rid of the column between the rooms, she increased the flow and area of the space. A microwave built into the island helps keep the new Calacatta Gold marble countertop clear. The streamlined room, with Rustic Cerused Oak cabinets by Naples Kitchen and Bath, aided by the rearrangement of the appliances, helps draw the eye the whole length of the kitchen where it joins the dining room.

Walter, an award-winning designer and CEO of Cardamon Design, wasn’t working her magic for one of her clients, but as a home for herself. “We almost had to take the condo down to the studs to get rid of its dated components, but, once I ascertained we would meet code, we took down walls, ceilings, flooring, and even some sliding glass doors,” she recalls. “Out went the cozy and in came the
sophisticated,” she says. “Choosing a subtle tone-on-tone palette and getting rid of fussiness suits my soul, particularly the part of me that is Asian. Simplicity is what creates such a serene atmosphere in my new home and I just love it. My days are filled with client meetings, drop-ins at construction sites, and visiting merchandising vendors with almost every waking moment with a cell phone glued to my ear. But when I walk into my new condo, I can literally feel my shoulders relax and the tension just drifts away. It is a wonderful feeling and to me, it is the meaning of the word ‘home.’”
The Living Room Before: A mirrored wall, rattan etagere, plant stands, reproduction Chinese lamps, oversized pottery vases, and yet more mismatched floral throw pillows create an overstuffed feeling in the original living room.
The Living Room After: The living room also houses one of Walter’s favorite places in her home, the built-in wine and champagne bar. Under the counter of Calacatta Gold marble, is a wine refrigerator to keep the bubbly chilled, disguised by Cashmere high gloss cabinets by Naples Kitchen and Bath. Inset into the alcove above it are underlit floating shelves for glassware. Beneath the television, the wood of the John-Richard entertainment console has a gesso finish, bringing texture to the piece. Also adding interest, Chauncey poses for the camera in a dark gray natural grass bucket chair with a cozy throw inviting visitors to cuddle up on chilly nights. To bring a bit of drama, Walter transformed the single door into a double door entrance to the owner’s suite. Adding to the theatrical element is a painting of a ballerina’s bodice and tutu in intriguing black and gold, harkening back to Walter’s days as a ballerina.
14 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E®
“
The Living Room Before: The overly fussy window valance, musty wall-to-wall carpeting, carnivalesque colors, and clashing furniture styles created a visual cacophony in the original living room. A wall of sliding glass doors, another must-have a few decades ago, made the space into one giant room, impinging on the dining room. The stuffed lion didn’t prove to be much of a barrier.
Out went the cozy and in came the sophisticated
”
The Living Room After: It was a toss-up what to get rid of first for Walter: the valance or the carpet, so she tore out both immediately. Next, she got rid of the blinding wall of sliders, adding a bump out art wall (creating a chat room beyond the dining room.) The leather sectional by Natuzzi set around a Vanguard coffee table further helps delineate the room, as does the accent table in Shagreen (faux stingray) set on the edge of the custom chevron patterned wool area rug from Hadinger Flooring. Linen shades to filter the light are by Window Wear Design. The wall art, featuring abstract oysters, is from HOME and Salvage. The giant tusk accessory is Walter’s own, traveling with her from home to home. It is the room’s only nod to African wildlife (the previous owner’s stuffed lion is enjoying retirement in Wisconsin.)
“
YOUR HOME MAG AZ INE® | 15
The Dining Room: The dining room is a tribute to minimalism from Walter, who hates clutter. The bar height table with its iron base has a roughly cut wood slab top. The chairs, which Walter found by accident on a weekend shopping trip, have crème brûlée-hued performance linen seats and sport a design known in Asia for centuries. Overhead the Arhaus chandelier has iron

arms and clear Edison bulbs, which reflect soft light onto the accent wall, painted in Sherwin Williams “Accessible Beige.” “Snow,” the large abstract painting is by Walter’s “dear friend” local artist, Anna Rac. By moving the wall between the kitchen and the dining room back three feet, Walter allowed room for a counter with wooden stools by Woodbridge.
“
Simplicity is what creates such a serene
atmosphere in my new home and I just love it.
”
Laurie Walter, CEO of Cardamon Design
The Chat Room Before: This old-fashioned sunroom was used like a four-season porch would be up North. Wicker furniture with mismatched floral cushions, butter yellow walls, a faux wood fan, and even a door mat on top of the indoor/ outdoor carpet crowded the space.
The Chat Room After: Walter created an inviting chat room where guests could gather to share drinks and conversation in an atmosphere of serenity underscored by the room’s sophisticated and muted palette. Gone is the ceiling fan and, in its place, is a mid-century modern paper fixture from Design Within Reach. Its soft illumination shines down upon a petrified wood table with metal legs. A quartet of swivel lounge rockers are clad in Boucle fabric, renowned for its fabulous texture. The seating group is set upon a cowhide rug. Two pops of color are provided by the fused glass cylinder on a Phillips Collection pedestal (“I love how the lights pours through it,” says Walter) and a mixed media piece evocative of Naples’s waterside location, painted by Walter herself. On the patio are an Azurro Living all-weather rope chair, an iron drum table by Four Hands, and Chauncey, the resident French bulldog, who photobombed the photo shoot.
YOUR HOME MAG AZ INE® | 17
The Owner’s Suite Before: A rattan headboards and lattice nightstands once were de rigueur furnishing trends for a vacation home near a beach. That reasoning also explains the overuse of shades of blue, (in the bedding and armchair with aproned hassock) found in the decoration of the previous owner’s suite. To add interest, without venturing outside of the color scheme, the windows have louvered shutters and the entire window has been given a blue and white band of patterned wallpaper. Atop the driftwood dresser (a wood finish that is itself a relic from another era,) is the only spot of color in the room—a yellow and blue Chinese lantern jar.
18 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E®
The Bathroom Before: The owner’s suite bathroom is another time capsule from the old days. A single sink is set into the Formica counter which butts right up against the jetted tub on one end and right in front of the toilet on the other. The glaring light of the Hollywood strip bulbs is reflected in the mirrored wall, as is the same garish wallpaper which borders the window in the adjacent bedroom. Another vanity and sink intrude into the dressing room/closet and are reflected in the mirror.
The mirrors were custom made by Aldecor Custom Framing & Gallery. The Bathroom After: Walter took out the tub, but taking advantage of where water entered and exited the room, created an expansive shower instead. The back wall hosts 36 x 20 wide textured tile, reminiscent of concrete, from Florida Design Works. The side walls are covered in Crystal Rustico porcelain tiles. Plumbing fixtures are from Kohler’s Purist Collection. A louvered window was left to flood the shower with light and the entire enclosure is fronted by glass barn doors. Two Kohler sinks, set into the countertop of Pompeii Volaza quartz, face each other in the reconfigured room. Chrome and glass sconces, Art Deco in style, are from Wilson Lighting. Riverside chrome pulls from Top Knob adorn the Rustic Cerused Oak cabinetry and the mirrors were custom made by Aldecor Custom Framing & Gallery.
The Owner’s Suite After: A white mink faux fur throw announces, without words, the subtle glamor of the owner’s suite. It is draped casually on the Century Furniture bed from the Curate Collection which has a woven headboard and an all-wood frame. Matching nightstands from Universal Furniture hold Lucite and white wood lamps from FlowDécor. The room is also softly lit from above by a stainless steel and trumpet bulb chandelier scaled down to suit the slightly low (8 feet) ceiling. The custom pillows by Window Wear Design sit atop the all-linen bedding. A woven chair and a curated petrified wood table, and an oversized lantern front the window, the architectural asymmetry of which is offset by stacked linen draw draperies, thus creating a positive out of a negative. Underfoot, as throughout the home, is COREtec Hayes Oak, a wide plank luxury vinyl flooring product. This owner’s suite won “Best Master Suite” at the recent Sand Dollar Awards.

Set the
Stage Great Tablescape Ideas and Inspiration
A
s the holiday season approaches, many of us are eagerly anticipating the joy of gathering with loved ones around a beautifully set table. Whether you’re hosting a Thanksgiving feast or a Christmas dinner, the art of table setting allows you to infuse your personal style and create a memorable atmosphere for your guests. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore four distinct approaches to holiday table settings that cater to a range of tastes and preferences. From embracing natural elements and earthy colors to adding a touch of glamor and sparkle, you’ll find inspiration to make your holiday table truly special.
20 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E®
Embracing Nature and Warmth Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude and togetherness, and your table setting can reflect these sentiments. Here’s how to create a warm and inviting Thanksgiving table using natural elements, earthy colors, and simple, homey decor. To create this tablescape, you can actually begin by looking in your own backyard. Gathering natural elements from your surroundings is a great way to make a table that is not only beautiful, but also eco friendly. When you are done you can simply put the things you’ve gathered back to continue the natural life cycle. If you live in a more tropical locale and are worried you
won’t be able to find the right natural decor outside, visit local markets and craft stores. Look for items like: Fall Foliage: Collect colorful leaves, acorns, and twigs to use as decor. Arrange them in small vases or scatter them along the table runner. Pumpkins and Gourds: Miniature pumpkins and gourds make charming place card holders. Write each guest’s name on a small tag and tie it to a stem. Pinecones: Add pinecones to your centerpiece or place them strategically along the table for a rustic touch.
Earthy colors make or break this naturally themed table so make sure you are setting the mood through the tones you pick. Choose a color palette that embodies the earthy warmth of autumn. Traditional Thanksgiving colors include: Rust: Use rust-colored tablecloths or napkins for a rich, earthy base. Golden Yellow: Incorporate golden yellow accents in your tableware or as part of your decor. Deep Green: Opt for deep green table runners or incorporate greenery for a fresh look.
This style thrives on the use of homey decor to create a cozy and welcoming ambiance. To make the perfect, rustic and natural table consider these decor elements: Candles: Use unscented candles in warm, autumnal hues as centerpieces or to create an intimate atmosphere. Plaid or Burlap: Incorporate plaid or burlap table runners, napkin rings, or placemats for a rustic touch. Wooden Accents: Use wooden chargers or utensils for a homey, organic feel.
Remember, simplicity is key for a Thanksgiving table. Keep the decor understated to allow the focus to remain on the delicious meal and the meaningful conversations around the table.

Simple Elegance for Christmas By embracing the natural beauty of the season and sticking to a refined color palette, your Christmas table will exude simple yet timeless elegance. For those who like a little more glamor, the holiday season is their time to shine. If you want to elevate your Thanksgiving table to a whole new level, consider incorporating mixed metals, a touch of sparkle, and upscale items.
Mixed Metals - The combination of different metals adds a touch of sophistication: By embracing the natural beauty of the season and sticking to a refined color palette, your Christmas table will exude simple yet timeless elegance.
As with Thanksgiving, the use of natural elements is a wonderful Christmas tradition. Keeping things simple not only elevates the food and keeps the focus on people gathering together, it can also keep stress levels down. For a Christmas table that exudes simple yet elegant charm, follow these guidelines that emphasize the beauty of natural elements.
When it comes to color, keep it classic and elegant. Traditional tones really set the mood and create a warm and welcoming table. Red and Green: Traditional Christmas colors can be incorporated through table linens, napkins, or accent pieces. Gold and Silver: Use metallic accents like gold or silver chargers, flatware, or candleholders for a touch of luxury.
Christmas offers a wealth of natural elements to incorporate into your table setting. While people spending the holiday up north will be able to easily find these items outside, those who are in a warmer climate might have to go to a local tree shop or craft store to gather these elements.
White: White tableware or tablecloths provide a clean and elegant canvas for your Christmas decor.
Evergreen Branches: Adorn your table with fresh evergreen branches or wreaths. They bring a touch of nature and a wonderful fragrance to your setting.
Crystal and Glassware: Use crystal or clear glassware to add sophistication to your table.
Pinecones and Berries: Similar to Thanksgiving, pinecones and red berries can add a festive touch to your decor. Fruit and Nuts: Place a bowl of fresh fruit and nuts in the center of the table for both visual appeal and snacking during the meal.
22 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E®
Simple decor is elegant decor. There is no need to go overboard with anything when choosing this style. To achieve an elegant look:
Tapered Candles: Choose tall, slender taper candles in neutral colors like ivory or white for a refined atmosphere. Minimalist Centerpiece: Opt for a single, statement centerpiece, such as a tall vase filled with evergreen branches and fairy lights.
Gold and Silver: Use gold and silver flatware, chargers, and candleholders to create a lavish atmosphere. Copper Accents: Incorporate copper napkin rings or vases for a trendy twist. Adding some sparkle will create a special feeling at the Thanksgiving table. This can be done through a variety of items and layering different styles that offer a beautiful shine will create depth and interest on your table. Crystal and Glass: Opt for crystal glassware and sparkling wine glasses to enhance the luxurious vibe. Glittering Table Runner: Choose a shimmering table runner or placemats for added glamor.
A glamorous Thanksgiving table setting is all about creating a sense of opulence, making your guests feel like royalty as they celebrate the holiday.
Glitz and Glamour
Sparkling Place Cards: Craft personalized place cards with a touch of glitter to catch your guests’ eyes. Napkin Rings: Bring out napkin rings cut to catch the light or that offer a real wow factor through their glittering design. Another great way to elevate a tablescape is by investing in high-quality items. These will be used year after year as you create family traditions so spending a little more for items that will last or can be handed down is certainly worth it. Fine China: Bring out your finest china or invest in elegant dinnerware for this special occasion. Linen Napkins: Soft, high-quality linen napkins in rich colors can add a luxurious feel to your table. Designer Centerpiece: Consider an upscale floral arrangement or a designer centerpiece to be the focal point.
When it comes to color, keep it classic and elegant. Traditional tones really set the mood and create a warm and welcoming table.
When it comes to Christmas, those in the camp of “more is more” will be drawn to a table filled with sparkle, glamor, and shiny elements. Here’s how to achieve a dazzling effect.
Accents really elevate the look of your table so look for items that add depth to your design. Mirrored Chargers: Place mirrored chargers beneath each plate to reflect the shimmering decor.
Bring the sparkle to your Christmas table. In fact, maybe think about repurposing some of the items from your Thanksgiving table here and then add a Christmas flair through other, holiday appropriate items.
Crystal Chandeliers: If possible, hang a crystal chandelier above the table for an extravagant touch.
Glittering Tablecloth: Choose a tablecloth or table runner with sequins or glitter for an instant wow factor.
Pulling off a sparkling and glamorous Christmas table is all about embracing the magic and extravagance of the season. Let your creativity shine as you incorporate dazzling elements into your holiday decor.
Shiny Ornaments: Hang small, shimmery ornaments from the chandelier above the table or scatter them across the table. Glistening Candles: Use metallic or glittery candles in various heights for a sparkling centerpiece. An over the top Christmas table is the place for color. Opt for bold and rich hues that set the mood and enhance the look of the food. Deep Red and Gold: These colors evoke a sense of opulence and luxury. Use them for table linens, napkins, and accents. Emerald Green: Incorporate emerald green, a regal and festive color, into your decor elements. Midnight Blue: Deep blue tableware or accents can add a touch of sophistication.
Shiny Baubles: Decorate the table with shiny baubles, like glass ornaments, for a festive and glamorous touch.
Whether you prefer the rustic warmth of Thanksgiving with earthy elements, the simple elegance of Christmas with natural decor, the glamor of Thanksgiving with mixed metals, or the sparkle of Christmas with shiny elements, your holiday table setting can be a reflection of your unique style and the joyful spirit of the season. As you embark on the journey of creating the perfect holiday table, remember that the most important ingredient is the love and warmth you share with your guests. Happy holidays!

Coastal Living A Totally Remodeled, Riverfront Home
T
here is something special about waterfront property. The calming atmosphere, the connection to nature, the beauty. People have always been drawn to waterfront homes, even historically. At first, it was practical, offering trade, protection, and easy access to the water needed for everyday life. But as we advanced and life got easier, our love for these special locations never left. As a local waterfront home and property expert, Loretta Burn knows how much people love to find homes in these special places. She works with buyers and sellers in the New Smyrna Beach area, connecting them with the right homes and land based on their list of waterfront must-haves.
Reviving the Essence The home’s original exterior is now a better representation of the amazing location thanks to a total overhaul. New paint not only gives it a fresh appeal as it covers the original dark red color of the home, but its easy-to-clean technology means the exterior will look new for years to come. All new landscaping has been chosen for easy maintenance as well and for its ability to thrive in the local climate with ease. “The landscape company is even training the plants to be able to withstand the decrease in water we get during the winter, so they really will be almost maintenance-free once that process is over,” explains Burn. The stone surfaces on the steps were refreshed, and the driveway pavers leveled and cleaned, giving the home a much-needed makeover.
YOUR HOME MAG AZ INE® | 27
Elegant Entrance The entry to the home has been given a total makeover thanks to the new, floating walnut staircase the owner had installed. “Originally the home had a small, tight-feeling spiral staircase that led to the upstairs living areas,” says Burn. Now, the impressive stairway offers a beautiful design feature that adds to the custom touches the homeowner selected during the remodel. Adding to the room, dramatic, large-format faux marble tiles create a beautiful feature wall visible from both the great room and the entryway.
One special property she represents is this completely remodeled, 5-bedroom, 6-bath New Smyrna Beach home. Overlooking the panoramic riverfront, the gated home boasts an impressive 100-feet of intracoastal waterway frontage. “The setting is so peaceful,” says Burn. “I love beachfront homes, of course, but there is something special about riverfront homes. The natural beauty and connection to wildlife and nature here are my favorite.” The beautiful location of this 7,400 square-foot home makes the complete remodel even more stunning. As Burn explains, “the whole home has been redone, outside and in. The owner originally saw herself living here full time, but realized the home was too large for her current needs and tastes. She made the decision to sell, but also stayed close by since she loves the area so much. Since this was going to be her primary

residence, the remodel was done with a homeowner in mind - not a flip. Everything is beautifully finished for an actual homeowner, which makes a huge difference in the materials and finishes selected.” In this home, it’s about what you don’t see as much as what you do see. The “behind the scenes” of the home has also been redone, including the AC and the addition of a central vac system. The central speaker system was upgraded along with all the wireless accessories, an alarm system with cameras was installed, and the generator that runs the whole house has been upgraded and installed. “That’s really just a very short list of the things done to this home,” says Burn. “For a complete list, people need to reach out to me because the work she did was extensive and impressive.
Entertaining Well
The “behind the scenes” of the home has also been redone, including the AC and the addition of a central vac system.
Adjacent to the great room, and just on the other side of the focal wall, is a TV room. Offering separation between the two spaces, this area is perfect for large gatherings as children can use it for movie night or as a play space while adults sit just on the other side of the wall to chat. Burn explains, “It’s great for entertaining, especially around the holidays. During Thanksgiving, for example, the larger group can be in the great room while the game or the parade is playing just a few feet away.” The room also opens onto the pool deck beyond.
Coastal Conversation The great room, which is located just off the kitchen for easy entertaining, features comfortable seating arranged around a large fireplace. “There are no TVs in this room - this is supposed to be a place where people gather for conversation without distractions,” says Burn. Coastal-inspired art gives the room its color scheme of warm tones accented with pops of blue.

Chef’s Kiss The kitchen went from a small space that didn’t fit with the overall size of the home to one that now feels in keeping with the rest of the interior. The completely remodeled kitchen now features all new appliances with double ovens for easy cooking and entertaining. The expanded kitchen was expanded to feature a second prep area with wine storage and floating shelves. Ample cabinet space is topped with quartz counters. The large island features a double, waterfall-edge design, and the whole room is accented by the eye-catching backsplash with a unique overlay design.

Dining Views The dining room is the perfect place to both eat a good meal and watch the changing light and view outside. Surrounded by a corner of sliding glass doors, the area is filled with light and overlooks the lanai, yard, and water beyond. A simple, yet beautiful walnut-toned table is flanked by Mid-century Modern chairs.
Sunny Spaces The home office is a quiet and private space with an attached bathroom. The walnut wood tones have been continued into this room for continuity. Overlooking the pool and deck, the room is a sunny space perfect for productivity.

Serene Retreat The master bedroom is a calming space accented with pops of blue. The rustic wood focal point behind the headboard adds warmth and character to the space. A soothing color palette of blue, gray, and silver creates a tranquil atmosphere for relaxation and rest. Rustic charm meets modern elegance in this cozy sanctuary.
Luxurious Transformation This master bath imparts a sense of timeless elegance thanks to the full room makeover. The removal of the old jet tub and the addition of a sleek, freestanding one has brought a touch of modern luxury to the space. The pristine white and silver color scheme enhances the bathroom’s overall brightness and sophistication. The focal point, a generously sized shower with beautifully tiled walls, invites relaxation and rejuvenation. This master bath is now a sanctuary of style offering a serene escape within the home. A hidden, yet useful feature, the mirror comes equipped with built-in lighting that can be changed according to lighting conditions, which is perfect for makeup application.

Moving Up Upstairs, a second living area offers beautiful views of the river beyond both from the bank of windows and the outdoor space that wraps around almost the entire floor. Cozy seating has been chosen to facilitate both great conversation and to enhance movie night. And speaking of movie night, all the windows were retrofitted with electronic shades to keep light out during cinematic marathons. The dining area and kitchen offer a great place to prepare meals before dining alfresco and the warm tones of the room create a cozy atmosphere.
Relaxing Retreat
Outdoor Oasis Who doesn’t want their own riverfront bar and grill? Well now you can have one thanks to this home’s outdoor kitchen space. Equipped with a wet bar, a Traeger grill and traditional gas grill, and a linear fire pit, this space is perfect for entertaining along the water. Tropical accents create the feeling of a personal resort as you watch the game from the privacy and comfort of your own home or as you sip coffee in the morning.
The pool area has been redone to create the perfect area to cool off on a hot Florida day. “All of the landscaping was replaced, pavers were replaced and repaired to refresh the area, and new tiki torches added so that both day and night, this is a beautiful space to be,” says Burn. The relaxing sounds of the water feature create a resort-like feel.

They provide a gentle contrast to the deep blues and grays, adding dimension to the room.

A Glimpse Into Tradition
The Fascinating History of Christmas Cards The exchange of Christmas cards is a cherished tradition during the holiday season, a way for people to convey warm wishes and spread festive cheer. These colorful and heartwarming greetings have become an integral part of the holiday festivities. However, the history of Christmas cards is a story that spans centuries, evolving from humble beginnings to the beautifully designed and personalized cards we know today. In this article, we’ll take a captivating journey through time to explore the rich history and evolution of Christmas cards, from their earliest origins to the modern-day expressions of holiday goodwill.
A Humble Beginning Early Greetings and Manuscripts The roots of Christmas cards can be traced back to ancient civilizations. Early Egyptians and Romans exchanged papyrus scrolls and tokens of goodwill during their respective winter festivals. These early greetings often took the form of handwritten notes and manuscripts. The Medieval Influence During the Middle Ages, the tradition of exchanging written Christmas greetings continued to evolve. People began exchanging handcrafted parchment “Christmas letters” adorned with intricate calligraphy, religious symbols, and illustrations. These were often exchanged among nobility and the clergy.
The First Printed Christmas Card Sir Henry Cole and the Birth of the Christmas Card The introduction of the printed Christmas card is credited to Sir Henry Cole, a 19th-century British civil servant and educator. In 1843, Cole found himself overwhelmed with the task of sending handwritten Christmas greetings to
friends and colleagues. To save time, he commissioned artist John Horsley to design a card that featured a festive scene and space for a personalized message. This “Christmas and New Year’s Card” featured a family enjoying a holiday meal and included the greeting “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You.”
The Commercialization of Christmas Cards The success of Cole’s Christmas card marked the beginning of a new era. As printing technology improved, Christmas cards became more accessible to the general public. By the late 1800s, they were mass-produced and widely available

for purchase. These early cards often featured religious themes, winter landscapes, and scenes of holiday merriment.
Evolving Designs and Themes The Influence of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert Queen Victoria and Prince Albert played a significant role in shaping the imagery of Christmas cards. In 1848, the royal couple popularized the idea of a decorated Christmas tree through a widely circulated illustration. This contributed to the rise of tree-themed cards and the incorporation of festive greenery into card designs.
Personalization and Customization Today’s Christmas cards come in a wide range of designs and styles. From personalized photo cards featuring family portraits to handmade and artistic creations, there’s a card for every taste. People often take great care in selecting or creating cards that reflect their personality and the message they want to convey.
The Victorian Era’s Love of Sentimentality During the Victorian era, Christmas cards were not just greetings; they were expressions of deep sentiment. Cards often featured sentimental and romantic themes, emphasizing the importance of family, love, and togetherness during the holiday season. Intricate lace, ribbon, and pop-up designs became popular.
The Golden Age of Christmas Cards The 20th Century Boom The 20th century saw a boom in the popularity of Christmas cards. Advances in printing technology allowed for greater creativity in design and personalization. Themes expanded to include Santa Claus, reindeer, snowy landscapes, and playful illustrations. World War Greetings During times of conflict, Christmas cards took on a special significance. Soldiers exchanged cards with loved ones, and organizations sent cards to servicemen and women overseas. Many wartime cards conveyed messages of hope, peace, and a longing for home.
Modern Christmas Cards Digital Age and E-Cards With the advent of the digital age, the tradition of sending physical Christmas cards faced competition from e-cards and social media greetings. While digital greetings offer convenience, many people still value the tactile and personal nature of physical cards.
The history of Christmas cards is a testament to the enduring spirit of human connection and goodwill. What began as handwritten notes and manuscripts has evolved into a vibrant and diverse tradition celebrated worldwide. Christmas cards have mirrored the cultural shifts, technological advancements, and changing sentiments of society, yet they have remained a heartfelt means of spreading joy and love during the holiday season. As we exchange these festive greetings each year, we continue to honor the rich history and tradition of Christmas cards, bringing warmth and cheer to the hearts of those we hold dear.

Flavors of the Season 42 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E®
Whole Roast Chicken MAKES: 4 Servings
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Make sure the oven rack is in the lower third of the oven. Remove the chicken from its packaging and pat it dry with paper towels. This helps ensure a crispy skin. In a small bowl, mix together the salt, pepper, paprika, dried thyme, dried rosemary, and minced garlic. Drizzle the olive oil over the chicken and rub it all over the skin. Sprinkle the seasoning mixture evenly over the chicken, rubbing it into the skin and inside the cavity. Stuff the chicken cavity with the quartered lemon, onion, and fresh rosemary or thyme sprigs. This will infuse the chicken with wonderful flavors. Trussing the chicken (tying the legs together with 1 whole chicken (about 4-5 pounds) 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1 teaspoon dried rosemary 4 cloves garlic, minced
kitchen twine) helps it cook evenly and maintains a nice shape, but it’s optional. Place the chicken breast-side up in a roasting pan with a rack. If you’re roasting vegetables, arrange them around the chicken. Roast the chicken in the preheated oven for about 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part of the thigh without touching the bone. The cooking time may vary slightly depending on your oven and the size of the chicken.
1 lemon, quartered
Once the chicken is done, remove it from the oven
1 onion, quartered
and let it rest for about 10-15 minutes before carving.
2-3 sprigs of fresh rosemary or thyme Optional vegetables for roasting (carrots, potatoes, and Brussels sprouts work well)
This allows the juices to redistribute, keeping the meat tender and flavorful. Carve the chicken into serving pieces and arrange on a platter with the roasted vegetables, if you used them. Drizzle any pan juices over the chicken for extra flavor.

Roasted Butternut Squash Moons MAKES: 4 Servings
1 medium butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cut into half rounds (about 1/2 inch thick) 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced 4 cloves garlic, minced 2-3 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1 teaspoon dried thyme) Salt and black pepper to taste
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Make sure the oven rack is in the middle position. Carefully peel the butternut squash using a vegetable peeler. Cut it in half lengthwise and scoop out the seeds with a spoon. Slice the squash into half rounds about 1/2 inch thick. You can also purchase pre-cut butternut squash if you prefer. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with a bit of olive oil to prevent sticking. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced butternut squash, red onion slices, minced garlic, and fresh thyme leaves. Drizzle the olive oil over the mixture and toss everything together until the squash and onions are evenly coated. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Spread the butternut squash mixture in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Make sure there’s some space between the pieces to allow for even roasting. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and roast for 25-30 minutes, or until the butternut squash is tender and lightly caramelized at the edges. You may want to give the vegetables a gentle stir or shake the pan halfway through the roasting time for even cooking. Once the butternut squash is roasted to perfection, remove it from the oven. Transfer the roasted butternut squash, garlic, red onions, and thyme to a serving dish. You can garnish the dish with additional fresh thyme leaves for a burst of color and flavor.

add the remaining 1/4 cup of granulated sugar and continue beating until stiff, glossy peaks form. Gently fold the whipped egg whites into the cocoa-flour mixture until no streaks remain. Be careful not to deflate the egg whites.
FOR THE CHOCOLATE FILLING:
Pour the batter into the prepared jelly roll pan,
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
for about 12-15 minutes, or until the cake is set
8 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract A pinch of salt FOR THE CHOCOLATE GANACHE: 8 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped 1 cup heavy cream 2 tablespoons unsalted butter FOR DECORATION (OPTIONAL): Powdered sugar for dusting Fresh rosemary sprigs or mint leaves Sugared cranberries or other festive decorations
spreading it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven and springs back when lightly touched. While the cake is still warm, invert it onto a clean kitchen towel dusted with powdered sugar. Carefully remove the parchment paper from the bottom of the cake. Roll up the cake from one of the shorter ends, using the towel as a guide. This forms the cake into a log shape. Allow it to cool completely while rolled up. In a mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. Carefully unroll the cooled cake. Spread the whipped cream evenly over the cake, leaving a small border around the edges. Gently roll the cake back up, this time without the towel. Place the seam side down. GANACHE In a microwave-safe bowl or on the stovetop, heat the heavy cream until it’s hot but not boiling. Pour it over the finely chopped chocolate and let it sit for a minute. Stir until smooth and add the butter, stirring until it’s fully incorporated. Pour the chocolate ganache over the rolled cake, using a spatula to spread it evenly and create a bark-like texture. Use a fork to create wood-like texture lines on the ganache. Dust with powdered sugar to resemble snow. Decorate your Yule Log cake with fresh rosemary sprigs, sugared cranberries, or other festive decorations as desired. Refrigerate the Yule Log cake for at least an hour to allow it to set. Slice and serve your delicious homemade Yule Log cake to celebrate the holiday season!

Spiced Rum Eggnog MAKES: 1 Drink
2 ounces spiced rum 4 ounces eggnog 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1 shortbread cookie (optional) Ice cubes (optional)
On a small plate, combine the granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Mix them together to create a spiced sugar blend. Take a chilled cocktail glass and moisten the rim with a little eggnog or water. Be sure to wet the entire rim. Dip the moistened rim of the glass into the spiced sugar blend, twisting it slightly to ensure an even coating of the mixture sticks to the rim. This will create a spiced and flavorful rim for your drink. If you prefer your drink chilled, you can add a few ice cubes to the prepared glass at this point. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine the spiced rum and eggnog. Shake well until the mixture is thoroughly combined and chilled. Carefully strain the spiced rum and eggnog mixture into the prepared glass, taking care not to disturb the spiced sugar rim. Place a shortbread cookie on the rim of the glass, allowing it to rest partially on the rim and dip into the drink for a delightful combination of flavors and textures. Serve and Enjoy!

9 Packing Tips to Boost Your Odds of a Smooth Move BY JONAS BORDO, CEO AND CO-FOUNDER OF DWELLSY
Here are some packing best practices: 1. Declutter. Do this well before the big day! If you have any belongings you don’t need or want anymore, now is the time to set them aside, donate them or dispose of them. This isn’t a task you’ll want to deal with when you’re in the throes of moving. 2. Assemble your packing materials. You also don’t want to realize you’ve run out of boxes or tape midway through packing up your kitchen. In addition to boxes, make sure you have packing tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, foam peanuts, newspapers or other materials handy. 3. Pack one room at a time. Not only is this more time efficient, but it will also make the process of unpacking much easier. 4. Allow enough time for disassembly. Remember that you’ll have to unhook electrical appliances, take nails out of the walls and remove lightbulbs from lamps. You may also need to disassemble large pieces of furniture, like your bed frame or
5. Consider leaving clothing in drawers and on hangers. If your dresser drawers are full of non-breakable clothing, why not leave these items where they are? Secure the drawers in place with tape or straps so that they don’t slide open or fall out in transit. You can also leave clothing on hangers. 6. Label everything. Playing the “what’s in which box” game is not how you want to spend your first few days in your new home. Label each box in detail as you pack it. For example, don’t just write “Kitchen”. Write Kitchen: toaster, tea kettle, spatulas, immersion blender and oven mitts. 7. Save the essentials until last. These are items you’ll want to use while moving out and moving in, as well as belongings you don’t want to take any chances with. 8. Make sure to rent the right size truck. It’s easy to underestimate how much space your belongings will take up, so if you’re renting a truck or trailer, err on the side of too big. This is especially important if you’re moving a long distance. 9. And don’t forget to include appropriate equipment. Plan to use moving blankets or furniture pads to protect non-boxed items and straps to secure large items so they won’t shift in transit. Don’t forget items like hand trucks, dollies and ramps. It’s true that packing for a move usually isn’t a complex process, but if you want your move to go as smoothly as possible (and your belongings to survive intact), there’s a little more to packing than simply loading your stuff into boxes and hoping for the best.
