A Fun Take on Coastal Living

B

eautiful without being too feminine, colorful while still neutral, and family-friendly without compromising design—that was the directive set forth by the homeowners of this new construction home in the Isles of Collier Preserve. With those wishes in mind, Lisa M. Guild and Amanda Bugar of LMG Design Consulting Inc., for Pizzazz Interiors, set about creating a home that embraced the laid-back lifestyle Naples has to offer, while never compromising on the design of the home or the clients’ tastes and needs. In fact, the home

went on to win a Sand Dollar award for best home over $1.5 million. “These clients were wonderful to work with and I loved the vision they had for their Naples home,” says Guild. “They moved into the Isles of Collier Preserve for the amenities and lifestyle, and wanted to make a home that worked for their family which includes two sons who frequently have friends come into town or who visit from a nearby college. Fabrics needed to be durable, the furniture comfortable, so that the home is conducive to relaxed entertaining and multigenerational family time.”

Ready, Set, Go (LEFT) Guild and Bugar started by adding architectural items to the home and establishing a color palette of taupeinspired neutrals and pops of coral, rose gold, and turquoise. Black was used as an accent in artwork and some well-placed accessories. In the entry, the marble top console sports an architecturally interesting stainless steel base that feels like metal branches have been woven together to create the modern table. Like the majority of the furniture in the home, this piece was found thanks to the International Design Source in Naples. On the wall, a giclée by John-Richard sets the stage for the rest of the home by introducing the coral pink and hints at the fun yet sophisticated design beyond.

Kitchen Combo (ABOVE & RIGHT) The rich, taupe island helps to connect the kitchen to the rest of the open concept home. The solid surface counter is light while adding subtle veining. The barstools are elegant and functional, covered in a shimmery gold high-performance fabric for easy cleanup. Above the island, two pendants by Hudson Valley Lighting offer a new perspective on an iconic lantern shape through the use of classic linen shades and surrounded by a metal trapezoid. In the dining room beyond, Guild and Bugar added a statement piece with an abalone shell chandelier. The art brings in turquoise for a flash of color. “This shade of blue can be a really wonderful accent color but it can also feel cutesy if not used correctly. Adding a small amount through modern art was one way we brought in this Gulf-inspired color without it feeling juvenile,” says Guild. Around the table, the lead chairs pull their color and pattern from the chandelier finishing the room with a polished touch.

Sparkle and Shine (OPPOSITE) The focal point of the living room is the handmade mica wallpaper made by O Mexico. The paper shimmers in all lights and is the perfect complement to the darker accents on the media stand with pinwheel doors and the metal and wood in the flanking bookshelves and cerused oak coffee table. Known for their love of beautiful wall coverings in their designs, Guild says, “We use wallpaper in a strategic way and only when it adds to the narrative of a coastal home. It infuses visual interest without adding a lot of color, so the backdrop of the home remained neutral.” Coral and turquoise are introduced through the painting while the space is anchored by a custom silk and wool area rug with the same tonality as the kitchen and dining room connecting the mica and abalone chandelier. The large sectional seats eight and is flanked by two chairs with chrome bodies and easy to clean fabrics. The huge fan helps move air through the room when the wall of sliding doors is open creating seamless indoor/outdoor living.

New Perspective (LEFT) The wallpaper used in the master bedroom is actually paper that’s folded to create waves of texture that match the color on the surrounding walls. The bed, with a washable silk coverlet, is flanked by blue-grey nightstands from Vanguard featuring mirrored trim detail. Stools at the end of the bed showcase the same finish as the nightstands and the branch-like bases add a natural touch to the elegant space. Wingback chairs provide seating and the fabric offers a change of perspective on the wallpaper pattern.

Oyster Pearl (ABOVE) For Guild, taking inspiration from the Gulf Coast setting offered a unique perspective. “We love the idea of creating spaces that almost feel like you are inside a shell. The colors of the home and the shine in the metals used throughout creates a sophisticated take on coastal living.” In the powder bath, the mirror is the element that brings the coast to the home. The beautiful oval shape is accented with coral and shells. The lacy texture is tipped with silver leafing. Rose colored wallpaper with tons of organic movement creates a stunning backdrop for this elegant bath.

YOUR HOME MAG AZ INE® | 13

Work/Life Balance (BELOW) “This is the husband’s space so we needed to create a room that matched the design of the rest of the home while still being a functional and much-used home office,” explains Guild. While the furniture is modern and fashion-forward, there is plenty of storage available. Grey Phillip Jeffries wallpaper with nailhead details is accented by the bright colors in the art above the walnut-colored storage cabinets with chrome accents. Mango wood lamps add a natural element and are in keeping with the theme of black accents. The room is anchored by an area rug with an abstract pattern that reminds Guild and Bugar of seafoam sprayed on the shore.

Pinwheel Fun (RIGHT) The outdoor living area is bright and sunny thanks to the contrast of blue and white used on the walls, floor, and fabrics. The pinwheel patterned fabric on the accent chairs ties into the credenza in the living room just beyond, and the exterior finish on the chairs, sofa, and love seat match the finish on the furniture in the study. Shell stone surrounds the fireplace while a darker rug grounds the space.

SET IN STONE Thinking about remodeling your kitchen or selecting counters for your new bathroom? There is a wide range of beautiful stone options, both natural and man-made. We want to highlight the natural stone surfaces from Cambria, one of the foremost producers of engineered quartz surfaces in the United States. Quartz offers fantastic durability compared to granite or marble, and is still a natural stone with all the beauty and movement people love when using these kinds of surfaces. Cambria combines American craftsmanship with the finest materials, offering elegant natural quartz surfaces with unmatched durability. Here are three top trends from Cambria to consider when adding to or updating your home in 2020.

BOLD COLOR

Why not add a pop of color into your home through your stone surfaces? From your shower walls to your backsplashes or counters, Cambria has a wide range of patterns and colors to choose from as you think about infusing more vibrant colors. Keep the rest of the room neutral to really enhance the color you’ve added while not overwhelming the space.

STATEMENT ISLANDS

Nothing pairs better with food and drink that a beautiful statement island! This year eye-catching islands will be all the rage and set the stage for kitchen design. Whether you choose dark and dramatic, or pick a surface with bold movement, these islands take even the most fantastic kitchen to a new level.

18 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN EÂŽ

WALL COVERINGS

If you’re not a fan of traditional backsplashes, this trend is for you. Covering your walls in stone creates a seamless and elegant backdrop to any room, especially the kitchen and bath. Feel free to get creative, you can even use Cambria quartz as an accent in a bedroom to create a one-of-akind headboard.

Winter Wines

While wine is a year-round beverage, there are varieties that pair better with each season. Winter brings a new group of wines that work with colder temperatures and shorter days. Here is a list of classic favorites, new ideas, and then, of course, some lighter options for sitting on the sand while your friends and family up north envy your winter playground. NEBBIOLO If you enjoy wines that are big, bold, and red, Nebbiolo needs to be in your collection. Grown in northern Italy’s Piedmont region, this grape produces powerful, full-bodied, and mercilessly tannic wines but looks as pale as Pinot Noir. These are the grapes that go into Barolo and Barbaresco, two of the world’s most revered and more expensive wines. While it has a prestigious legacy, Nebbiolo is also in a number of more affordable, entry-level styles of wine from Italy and beyond. This wine pairs well with classic winter foods like risotto, charcuterie, mushrooms, and truffles.

SYRAH Syrah is one of the darkest red wines on the market. Darker than Cabernet Sauvignon, you’d actually have a hard time seeing through it if you held a

20 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E®

glass up to the light. Syrah has a large amount of mouth-drying tannins and is full-bodied. The wine features flavors of berries, pepper, tobacco, and even smoked meat. Syrah is the perfect accompaniment to meat, but it also pairs well with almost any food group.

WHITE ROJA If you are looking for a winter white, try a White Rioja or Rioja Blanco. This style of wine hails from the Rioja region of Spain and is made with white grapes, namely the important Viura grape. It ranges from light to full-bodied and has the unique ability to age for 10 or more years. Rioja Blanco wines are rare, making up only about 10% of the region’s production and the two primary styles of White Rioja wines are based on aging. Aged Rioja Blancos are bold and heady with notes of roasted

pineapple, caramelized honey, preserved lime, candied tarragon, and hazelnut. Fresh Rioja Blanco aromas are lean and citrusy with notes of lime peel, lemon verbena, honeydew melon, fresh tarragon, and marjoram. On the palate, they are dry and with a pop of acidity, have sweeter fruit flavors, and a long finish of minerals and saline.

PORT Port wine is most commonly enjoyed as a dessert wine because of its richness and sweetness with flavors of raspberry, blackberry, caramel, cinnamon, and chocolate. There are several styles of Port, including red, white, rosé, and tawny Port. While most of the bottles available in the supermarket are just average, there are many fine Port wines that can cost several hundred dollars. The two most common styles of Port include a red Port that features flavors of berries and chocolate and a tawny-colored Port with hints of caramel and nuts. Older, fine tawny Ports have a wider array of subtle flavors including green peppercorn, hazelnut, almond, butterscotch, and graham cracker. Look for one that’s been aged for 30 years or more for this level of complexity.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON The classic winter fallback is the trusty and well-loved Cabernet Sauvignon. If it wasn’t for a happy accident in seventeenth-century southwestern France, when breeding occurred between a red Cabernet Franc plant and a white Sauvignon Blanc plant, we wouldn’t have this grape which has become the most popular among American wine

drinkers. As a wine, Cabernet Sauvignon is known for its dark color, full body and an alcohol content that is over 13.5%, with most Cabernet Sauvignons, especially those from California, Australia, and Chile, reaching over 15%. The wine is dry, and has a healthy level of tannin, which is why your mouth dries out when you sip it. Many people who drink Cabernet Sauvignon say they pick up a taste of green pepper in the wine, along with tobacco, cassis, and dark fruits with a hint of vanilla that comes from the wine aging in the oak. Cabernet Sauvignon is best enjoyed with food, given its acidity, tannins, and alcohol; as by itself it can be overwhelming.

VIOGNIER Finally, because it’s warm almost all the time in Southwest Florida, you might be craving something with notes of spring and relaxing beachside moments. If this sounds like you, try a Viognier, a full-bodied white wine that originated in southern France. Loved for its aromas of peach, tangerine and honeysuckle, Viognier can also be oak-aged to add a rich creamy taste with hints of vanilla. Depending on how it’s made, it will range in intensity from light and spritzy with a touch of bitterness, to bold and creamy. If you like Chardonnay then you’ll like the weight of Viognier. On the palate, it’s typically dry but some producers will make a slightly offdry style which enhances the Viognier’s peachy aromas. You will almost always note an oily sensation on the middle of the tongue, a characteristic of wines made with this grape. The drier styles are less fruity and deliver subtle bitterness.

Q&A WITH HILLS SHOWCASE WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST DESIGN TREND FOR BATHROOMS? As home décor evolves, rooms that were seen as more utilitarian are now deserving of their own style. Beauty and function can coexist, meaning rooms like your bathroom should be a space that continues the design theme of the rest of your home. While this has been a trend for a few years, we are seeing more people opt for vanities that look like furniture. In fact, it’s not uncommon to see dressers and chests repurposed into unique vanities. If a

22 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E®

DIY project isn’t on your list, there is a wide range of vanities to choose from that have been manufactured to look like furniture and will match any style. The coastal chic trend has hit Southwest Florida bathrooms and I think it will continue this year. Vanities have gotten lighter and the lines are now sleeker in keeping with the shift to transitional design. Another trend that will continue is wall-mounted vanities that maximize storage while looking very contemporary. For a more modern look, don’t worry about legs. Floating vanities with mounted under-lighting are all the rage and

they look great in a transitional or modern space. If you feel like you want to anchor the vanity, then legs can be used; really the sky’s the limit.

WHAT ARE SOME TECH TRENDS SHOULD WE LOOK FOR THIS YEAR? Along with the idea that vanities are becoming their own furniture-grade pieces, you can now find options with interesting drawer liners like velvet or leather and many have electrical packages so hairstyling tools can be plugged

into drawers. This helps keep counters clutter-free. In fact, technology is now a large part of the bathroom as a whole. From mirrors with USB ports that play music, to frameless or waterproof televisions, the bathroom can be a very tech-friendly space. My one word of caution is to not invest too much in the latest technology and talk to an expert. I’m pragmatic when it comes to mixing water and electricity and I believe in simplicity with plumbing. You shouldn’t have to call an electrician to fix your plumbing. I also find that people don’t know exactly what they are getting when they purchase something like a no-touch faucet. Batteries have to be changed, since the technology is new. Not many companies know exactly what to do when something goes wrong, and there can be unforeseen issues. I know someone who installed a motion censored kitchen faucet and when they left to go out to dinner, the cat jumped onto the counter top and activated the faucet which led to a flooded kitchen! People just expect their faucets to work and keep working for years to come. While new technology is great, you might find the “old fashioned” route fits your needs just fine. I’m not disparaging new technology, but as a company, we sell the fixtures and we install them, so I see the pros and cons firsthand and want to pass that knowledge on to my clients so they can make the most informed decision.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN IN YOUR CLIENTS OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS? They are much more educated and more interested. I love working with these new savvy consumers! They come in knowing what they want and we can have a much deeper conversation

YOU R HOME MAG AZ INE® | 23

about their plumbing and bathroom needs. I also find Southwest Florida to be a unique market because people tend to be very mobile. I’ve noticed a seven-year trend with people moving into a new kind of home in the local area. People like to start in a condo, then move to a home, then try a golf course community, then go back to a condo, so I wind up working with clients in all kinds of different homes which is both fun and challenging. We have to know how each kind of home functions since a condo is different than a single-family home downtown.

WHAT ARE THE LOCAL TRENDS WHEN IT COMES TO COLOR AND FINISHES? Locally, people are drawn to lighter tones both in their vanities and fixtures. I also notice they don’t want to deal with odd finishes but are interested in unique shapes. There is a desire for fixtures that are low maintenance and easy to clean as well. Most people I deal with are making the area their second home so the focus is on fun, not cleaning a faucet that shows watermarks. Chrome and polished nickel will continue to be popular and there is a shift towards satin gold. It’s not as loud but still brings in a warm tone to the bath or kitchen. I believe the trend of high gloss vanities will continue to pick up locally. These are beautiful pieces that work in any color and are a great option for our transitional coastal style.

The third floor will include offices for Stofft Cooney Architects, Allikristé Custom Cabinetry and Kurtz Homes Naples. “I’m excited to see

the culmination of a vision that started 14 years ago when I purchased this land with two close friends,” said Randy Kurtz, owner of the land, and co-founder of Kurtz Homes. “I wanted to create a landmark building that would suit the character of the Naples Design District. The businesses involved are a perfect fit for what we envisioned—all like-minded design, art, and building oriented brands creating a one-stop destination for visitors and the trade.” Designed by Stofft Cooney Architects and

built by DeAngelis Diamond, The Collective features an innovative design with a visually stunning steel and glass façade, softened with lush landscapes, open terraces on the second and third floors, and an outdoor courtyard with a dramatic water feature in the center area of the ground floor. A striking stone composite sculpture by Arik Levy, a renowned Israeliborn artist, technician, photographer, and filmmaker based in Paris for the past 20 years, will grace the front entrance of the building. In

addition to the building’s predominant metal fins, this art piece will create an iconic symbol for The Collective. This new art and design destination is located in a Blue Zone, an area focused on community-based well-being and a healthier and high-quality lifestyle. With a four-story parking garage, The Collective will have 167 parking spots on three covered floors and one uncovered floor. For more information, visit www.TheCollectiveNaples.com.

Artful Design Some projects stand out

in a designer’s mind for particular reasons. Whether it’s the scope of the work, the clients, or the memories made during the design, there are always homes that are especially memorable. For Diana Hall, this Pelican Bay renovation is one of those special projects. For her, it was an opportunity to work with talented local artist Bonnie Ziskin, owner of Zoey Art in Naples, to create a unique space that shows how diverse her work as a designer can be. “The home was a complete gut job and was opened to create the feeling of an urban loft,” says Hall. “When Ziskin and her husband purchased the home, the style was Mediterranean, so it needed a complete update from head to toe.” All of the walls in the main areas were removed to create a wonderful, open home that worked with the clients’ needs and contemporary style. For Hall, working with an artist as a client meant she didn’t need to go far to source art for the home. The majority of the art on the walls and most of the fused glass pieces are Ziskin’s and her work is finessed and impressive. The home now serves as a living space and gallery for the couple.

28 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E®

Art Walk There are two seating areas in the open living space. The first features a series of colorful original works by Ziskin that set the color scheme for the home. “For the most part, the home is crisp, clean, and white, but all the accent colors are primary and secondary colors. This matches the artwork and really pops against the white surfaces found throughout,” explains Hall. In the middle of the room, the table by Stone International features a stone base with two wood tops that pivot to create different configurations that are cantilevered over the edge of the base. The sofa from American Leather has clean lines and a low back which make it the perfect addition.

YOUR HOME MAG AZ INE® | 29

High Shine (ABOVE) Nothing says modern like a kitchen with clean, high-gloss lacquer cabinetry. “The kitchen and dining room were completely enclosed before the renovation. With the whole space now open, the kitchen can shine as a beautiful part of the interior design,” says Hall. A bank of white cabinetry with wet bar, wine storage, and at the far end, built-in buffet, provides storage and beauty. Above the wet bar, specialty glass-front cabinets are lit from behind and offer a different take on modern style. The backsplash over the cooktop matches the quartzite found on the island with an elegant waterfall edge. The island also offers extra storage located behind the Interlude barstools. A small buffet area was placed by the dining room to keep furniture to a minimum and to not break up the sleek lines of the kitchen along the entire wall. By the window, Hall placed a niche for a piece of art glass that brings a pop of primary color to the kitchen.

Bold Tones (RIGHT) The striped quilt on the back of the white living room sofa, also by American Leather, was another of Ziskin’s artistic endeavors. A wonderful quilter, she has a few of her handmade pieces in the home, all in bold colors. Here, clean and simple design meets a palette of red and black, a color combination loved by the homeowners. The coffee table plays host to a colorful art glass piece and the sleek lines and mix of glass and wood are perfectly contemporary. Throughout the home, the large, 30” x 40” pristine porcelain tile ads a high-gloss touch each room.

30 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E®

Modern Fare (LEFT) While the art in the dining room isn’t Ziskin’s, it does work well with her originals, especially when lit by the large bank of windows. According to Hall, the windows make sense in the space. “Now that the home has been given a contemporary makeover, the windows work with the home and not against it. Before they were covered by heavy drapes that obstructed the view and light making the windows feel much smaller than they actually are. I decided to keep window treatments hidden to enhance the modern feel and to keep the view as open as possible.” The square LED chandelier illuminates the glass top table with two white glass bases and adds shine to the chrome and black leather chairs.

For the most part, the home is crisp, clean, and white, but all the accent colors are primary and secondary colors. —DIANA HALL

Subtly Chic (LEFT) In the master bedroom, a fabulous Weiman Home sandbox-style bed is extra dramatic thanks to vegan leather wings on the right and left of the headboard. Nightstands with shiny chrome bases and lucite drawer pulls are topped with texturally interesting bubble lamps. A chrome and leather bench at the end of the bed is both useful in a bedroom and adds another great design element. Artwork from a Cuban photographer infuses a pop of orange into the chic space.

Seamless Integrations (ABOVE) Hall achieved a comfortable, yet sleek master bath by matching the floor tile and then running it up to the ceiling. The lacquer cabinets with four-drawer design is fun and modern while providing plenty of storage in the larger drawers. Hall chose items with the same tonality to create a completely integrated design scheme. Everything is from the sconces to the mirrors to the drawer pulls and bath fixtures all blend into one soothing space.

YOUR HOME MAG AZ INE® | 33

Sew great (ABOVE) What home is complete without a space to create the perfect, modern quilt? A must when remodeling the home, the sewing room is a wonderful place for Ziskin to find inspiration and create her latest designs. Simple flat panel cabinets hide sewing and art supplies, keeping the room and the rest of the home clutter-free. The focal point in the room is the American Leather sofa in lipstick red, Ziskin’s favorite color. A vintage wagon from their previous home has been repurposed as an accent table and adds whimsical, unexpected element. On the floor, an area rug made of old blue jeans is another of the homeowner’s original creations and is the perfect addition to the room meant to inspire art.

outside vibes (RIGHT) Originally, the clients wanted to reshape the pool but opted to update the area instead. The deck is now resurfaced in a cement tile with small pebbles and shells mixed in to create some variation. The pool was given a new, dark treatment that Hall loves because most people aren’t willing to take a risk with a darker pool. Along the wall, the four pots now sit where the old flower bed was and modernize the outdoor greenery. The colorful pinwheel seating arrangement brings the colors from inside the home to the pool area, tying together the two spaces.

New Year, New Yard

I

T IS A NEW YEAR and if a new yard or improvements to your existing yard are in order, remember that landscaping in Southwest Florida doesn’t have to be difficult if you plan appropriately and follow certain tried and true practices. Consider the help of a professional landscaping firm when larger, more elaborate installations exceed your yard and garden tool kit. The Florida-Friendly Landscaping (FFL) Program, administered through the county extension office is a good resource for assisting homeowners in creating and maintaining beautiful yards. The program provides free

38 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E®

educational resources that teach you how to water more efficiently, fertilize appropriately, manage yard pests and more. When you begin the planning and plant selection process, be sure to take into consideration your home’s architectural style and color. Choose a focal point to design around if possible. This could be a pool or a large, flowering tree. Think about the style—do you want a lush, tropical look or something more formal and structured? Draw out your plan, noting the specific plants you would like to see where. Creating a multi-tiered design with a variety of shrubs closest to the home and flowering

plants that complement your home’s color can provide an instant face lift. When choosing shrubs that will be positioned close to the house, be sure to select species that will remain lower than the windows. Interspersing smaller trees in a border area can also help break up plant lines for more visual interest. There is a wealth of information online to help in your plant selection so you can understand what plants will fare better in our warmer climate. Drive around town and see what plants thrive in installations you like, and note how much sun they receive. Better yet, visit a local nursery and garden center like

Shop thousands of rare plants and garden accessories, including succulents, hostas, pavers, pergolas and more all at competitive prices. Free landscape design with installation purchase. Irrigation and outdoor lighting also available. Williams Magical Garden Center & Landscape in Naples for free advice and a wide selection to choose from. A fundamental consideration when it comes to trees is to be sure to plan for larger trees to be further from the structure of your home and with adequate space from streets and other hard surfaces. Too often a darling tree, when purchased, will grow to its full height, threatening a home’s exterior or causing damage to driveways and sidewalks. Choose ornamentals and flowering plants with an eye for what is aesthetically pleasing to you, keeping in mind the need for sunlight and irrigation of each selection. In shady areas where grass may not grow as well, select plants that will do well with four hours or less of sun, avoiding darker green foliage and brightening the area by choosing varieties with white or variegated leaves to stand out in the shadows. Many plants have evolved to grow well in Southwest Florida, but don’t hesitate to ask your local nursery which plants will do well for your particular situation. Drought tolerant plants are becoming a popular choice in our area and require less maintenance as well as water. In the cooler winter months be prepared to cover less hardy plants and shrubs

from the occasional cold spells that come our way. Covering your beds in a layer of mulch will also help plants withstand the damage of plummeting temps. Don’t be afraid to prune flowering trees and shrubs in January. After pruning, be sure to apply fertilizer and reapply mulch to help retain moisture and keep the fertilizer from running off. Be sure to check your local county guidelines for fertilizer use. Incorporating pathways, water features and outdoor lighting can take your home’s landscaping to a whole new level. With this degree of landscaping, however, it might be wise to enlist the help of professionals. Many companies will provide free landscape design if you purchase your installation with the nursery. Not only will you receive the guidance of professionals experienced and trained in landscape design, you can also be confident of getting high-quality plants and a more unique selection than you might find elsewhere. Now is a perfect time of year to plant in Southwest Florida, allowing your choices to become well-established and showy before the heat of summer. With some proper planning and assistance in selections (free for the asking at better nurseries), you can transform the exterior of your home into the yard of your dreams.

artist update A CONVERSATION WITH LOCAL ARTIST, EMILY JAMES

CONGRATULATIONS ON 5 YEARS IN YOUR GALLERY! WHAT DID YOU DO TO CELEBRATE? I was so busy painting and having fun, I didn’t even know until my sweet husband showed up with balloons and a carrot cake, my favorite, from 5th Avenue Coffee Co. Five years, five pounds added rather quickly.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON IN YOUR GALLERY? Well, on the gallery easel is a corporate portrait, in progress, for a very nice man with a lovely smile. At home, I’m painting a group of smaller pieces promised for various fundraisers, and early mornings I spend time covered in paint at a space I’m renting where I get my fluid seascapes underway before bringing them to paint in the ever so lovely gallery.

WHAT DO YOU PAINT SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUR GALLERY? It really doesn’t work that way. At my age, I paint what I want, and so far, people seem to enjoy having what I consider interesting and beautiful in their home.

44 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E®

DO YOU HAVE AN EXAMPLE? One of my recent series reflects my memories of the beauty below the sea from my snorkel and scuba observations. Knowing so many in this area are not from Florida as I am, I didn’t expect it would be greeted so warmly. However, I have been surprised and thrilled that others enjoy my re-creations of the beautiful coral colors along with the lovable sea creatures.

WHAT’S ON YOUR ‘BUCKET LIST’ TO PAINT? I have been evolving my sea paintings into capturing the many moods found on the seashore. I find it enormously interesting as the sea and sky colors interact together; a neverending subject to explore.

WHAT QUESTION DO YOU GET ASKED THE MOST? Definitely, ‘How long does a painting take?’ I just answer, ‘73 years!’ That is actually the truth; with every painting, I love exploring another minuscule nuance in the creative process.

WHY DO YOU THINK YOUR GALLERY IS SO SUCCESSFUL? I really just opened the gallery to fill my desire of wanting to meet people who were enjoying and purchasing my artwork, and being in other galleries didn’t fill this need at this point in my career. I feel I’m creating my best pieces and I want to see where ‘my children’ go! At the gallery, we sometimes joke that we have ‘adoptions’.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS WHEN SOMEONE COMMISSIONS A PIECE? I love to go to their house, measure the space, and see their personal style and color palette in the home. I also love to see where the light source is coming from in the home and mirror that in the painting. If the window will be to the right of the finished piece, then I paint accordingly so it’s compatible with the scene. I’ve even flipped paintings so the light source is coming from the right direction. It might be picky, but I feel like it just makes the painting more relatable in the space!

GALLERY WRAP OR FRAMING? Both! They are both wonderful options and can work in a variety of rooms and homes. If you aren’t sure you can always start with a gallery wrap and then move to a frame once you have found the right one for your home.

DO YOU HAVE A FULFILLING STORY FOR YOUR ART? Oh my, too many to relate. Most involve two topics, love and healing.

If ever there was an artist who creates breathtaking magic on canvas, that artist is Emily James. Born in Pensacola, this talented Floridian began drawing at the age of two, and has been sharing her creative gifts with the world ever since. The Emily James Gallery was once again voted the best art gallery in Naples. Anyone entering this special gallery is magically transported to a serene world of Florida landscapes and beaches, peppered with a delightful selection of wild and whimsical abstracts. Each magnificent painting is exquisitely executed, incorporating expert technique alongside a prism of masterful colors. Emily is the only artist in the United States selected by the top three fine art publishers, and two of her creations are among the top 50 selling prints worldwide. Her work has been exhibited at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and she was previously named An Outstanding American Woman of the Arts. She was also recognized by the Collier County Community Foundation for her many charitable contributions to the community.
