publisher’s note What does “Your Home” mean to you?
I’ve been thinking a lot about the phrase “Your Home” lately. That’s probably because I spend all day saying those two words but I also think it’s because the last year and a half has been one full of changes and moves for me personally. In fact, I’ve moved four times in 18 months! You learn a lot about what’s important and what’s not when you find yourself packing up every few months. Here are a some conclusions I’ve come to as I spent time in new spaces and places.
Your Home should be filled with meaning.
By the time I was on my second full move in six months, I realized that I owned a lot of things that didn’t mean that much to me. Art that didn’t feel personal, furniture that wasn’t all that necessary, and kitchen items I never used. I also spent a lot of time organizing my closet making sure the clothes I own are the clothes I love. I realized the importance of bringing items into your home that you really love—things that shouldn’t clutter your space and your mind.

Your Home needs some of the outdoors.
Plants bring life into your home so take the time to add a little nature into your space. I personally enjoy herbs and a few easy-to-grow vegetables on my patio so I have a City Pickers Indoor Patio Grow Box. It’s small and on wheels so I can easily move it in and out of the sun. If veggies aren’t your thing, there are a lot of great indoor plants. Check out page 40 for some tips on how to have happy and healthy houseplants.
Your Home is about the people (and animals!) inside.
All the beautiful design in the world means little if people aren’t around to see and enjoy it. Open up your home to friends and family, throw a barbecue, have a pool party. Your home doesn’t have to be perfectly designed for it to be a space in which you can make memories. And don’t forget your pets! Having my dog Tanner with me as I made my many moves provided a sense of stability and calm. He’s happy in any new place as long as I’m there and he has a soft bed to sleep in. So what does your home mean to you? Hopefully this issue can provide you with some tips and ideas as you think about creating the best space possible for you and your family! Sincerely,
Channing Spano

Paradise FOUND A NEW BEGINNING FOR AN OLD NAPLES ESTATE By Channing Spano | Photography by Blaine Johnathan

s you approach this elegant Bermuda-style home, you would never guess that it was once hidden behind a jungle of trees and subtropical shrubbery, obscuring its potential to be a modern family home in one of Naples’ best locations. Looking at it today, it’s also impossible to tell that it has undergone four renovations in its past life because this, the fifth and last renovation, was done with such vision, skill, and care. This beautiful home has at last been transformed into the modern Old Naples estate it was meant to be. “I was always drawn to the home and I felt it was too important to be torn down,” says developer Kristen Williams of KW Properties. “Living in this area, I knew it was one of the first grand homes built on Gulf Shore Boulevard. I could tell it had great bones, we just needed to revive it, and create a home that fit the needs of the new Naples resident.” Williams enlisted the talents of architect Alberto Abad of New Architectura and builders Jay Bowerman and Jaider Gonzalez of Big Island Builders. The team set to work designing an additional wing and new entry worthy of the home. “We felt it was important to change the orientation of the entrance to create more curb appeal and to give the home a true Gulf Shore Boulevard address. Also, the original two-story wing made the home feel off balanced,” comments Abad. Bringing a design perspective driven by couture runways and a love of vibrant palettes, Williams

and designer Lillian August were able to create a home that plays to fashion while still maintaining the traditional feel Northern transplants are so accustomed to. While inspired by the Floridian sky, August was also charmed by Williams, and her hands-on approach to the project. “I found working with Kristen to be magical, and collaborating with a woman developer was empowering. It gave me the ability to play to fashion and celebrate the power of style through the design of the home.” One of the main challenges Williams and August faced was the physical distance between them. While Williams and August were able to travel to one another at times, someone at the local level was needed to facilitate the vision. That task fell to Suzanne Costa of Suzanne Costa Interiors who says, “As a New York designer I was very familiar with Lillian August and working with such an icon was an honor. I feel we were able to take her distinct and colorful style and successfully translate it for Naples’ coastal market.” Throughout the home, August’s unique ability to layer color, retro styles, and whimsical elements creates an interior that speaks to the history of the home and its setting, while looking towards the bright future it’s sure to have. This 5,438 square foot home features four bedrooms and six baths and is available for $7,999,000. Contact Olde Naples Real Estate for more information.
As the Bermuda-style home is viewed from the new custom-poured shell driveway one would never guess at the extensive redesign and artfully executed renovation which took place. The orientation of the home was changed from the narrow side street to face Gulf Shore Boulevard, a second two-story wing was added on the right, and the triple-arches were changed to reveal a new grand entryway. “It took a lot of structural re-engineering, but I’m glad we were able to add the arches because they look spectacular as you approach the house,” notes builder Jay Bowerman.

The French country kitchen is consistently one of the favorite rooms in the home. Designed by Carol Ruffino and manufactured by Ruffino Cabinetry, the Alabaster White-finished cabinets provide the perfect canvas on which to build. Wire-grill door inserts with limed oak T&G backs, and shelves with custom iron brackets complement the beautiful limed oak island. Ruffino’s design incorporated a Lacanche Chassagne Classic Art Culinaire French range. Williams used the French pastry table at the end of the island to enhance the classic European look. Calcutta Gold marble and French white oak flooring complete the space.
“This home was about surprise elements for me—from the way a hallway would open into an intimate sitting room, to accent items found throughout, I wanted people to be excited about each new space—,” says August. An expertly curated mix of traditional formality and a relaxed lifestyle is apparent. The sleek silhouette of twin Maison sofas pairs with the gold finish of the coffee and side tables offering an ’80s vibe. The art in this room is from August’s Wendover collection, inspired by her love of Florida’s always beautiful sky. The large antique mirror was retrofitted for the home and plays off the arched windows it reflects.

(ABOVE) Filled with saturated color and textural layers, the dining room is a space that gives the homeowners a truly formal entertaining area. American made chinoiserie wallpaper represents a new opportunity for designers as it replaces the more expensive and labor-intensive hand-painted method. The wallpaper sets the color scheme and period for the room, and is accented with the punch of Chinese red and oversized porcelains. The dark wood dining table sits on a rug that reinforces the traditional feel. (OPPOSITE TOP) “I wanted to create a distinctly masculine area in this house and I think this room turned out to be a wonderful space with a global feel,” says Williams of the billiards room. Roman shades, the animal skin rug, and antler accents add exotic touches to the classic pool table and leather sofa. The artwork is from August’s Wendover Collection.

(BELOW) This guest room is beautifully appointed with nautical art and colors. The perfect place for a fun sleep over, twin bunk beds create plenty of sleeping space. Leather ottomans at the foot of the bed are a durable and fashionable seating option for kid friendly spaces. (RIGHT)The pool area created a unique set of challenges for the builder and architect. Because the lot was fairly narrow and the orientation of the home had been changed, they had to be creative in working around their setback requirements. Abad’s solution was to cantilever the home, giving the exterior more visual interest while adhering to the city’s guidelines. The tiered Travertine pool was another clever solution, and creates a unique entertaining space. Large pink flamingos by Ed Koehler add a tropical pop of color to the neutral tones of the pool area.

Forging
a Relationship
How two world-renowned artists collaborated, causing us to ask, ‘What is originality?’ By Marlissa Gardner
A
s a man who virtually single-handedly transformed modern society into a connected consciousness with his devices, Steve Jobs was certainly a credible voice on creativity and originality. He famously said, “Creativity is just connecting things.” Jobs knew that the most simple answer was the obvious solution—but by no means the most popular. The reason we overcomplicate our solutions is because it’s incredibly difficult to discipline one’s self to focus on the smallest change, the most minuscule of variations, the near-imperceptible nuance. This is especially true for artists. Great artists know that what separates their art from others is not their flair or pizazz– though these may be attractive to the causal consumer. What separates truly great artists from their peers is something more subtle, more subterranean: their will to reduce. Pairing down and scraping away what was frivolously applied, revealing the truth of the subject, takes mastery and skill. This concept leads us to micro sculptor, Willard Wigan. Wigan works with both technical tools—a microscope at 600-times magnification—and an organic tool—the hair of a fly—to create his micro works. Wigan recently collaborated with world-famous artist and forger, John Myatt to create the incredible, The Secret in
16 | YOU R HOM E M AGAZIN E
the Eye, an exact recreation of one of the world’s most recognized paintings, the Mona Lisa. At first glance, you may not realize this masterful forgery is actually a completely new idea—a painting within a painting. Myatt applies his remarkable expertise to re-create Da Vinci’s singular work by reconstructing his methods and glazing techniques. The Secret in the Eye’s Mona Lisa draws the viewer in for a closer look. But then Wigan’s 24 karat gold frame and microscopic version of the Mona Lisa, totaling 1 millimeter squared, surprise and delight. This unique piece challenges us with a question. When does forgery become authentic—when does a copy become an original? It’s curious and a bit amusing to realize that the simple addition of a spec of visual information can transform the meaning and motive of an entire painting. This collaboration is a rare occurrence, producing an even less common outcome: art that surprises, impresses and challenges the status quo. Art has always impacted culture and vice versa. It’s truly amazing to realize that the Mona Lisa is as relevant as ever, lending her likeness to modern works that can influence us in new ways. Emillions Art was thrilled to exhibit The Secret in the Eye at the Palm Beach Art Show and the painting is now on display in Naples at our offices.

H
istory has a way of repeating itself—in home décor as well as many other fields. We are currently seeing a reinvention of an era that holds fond memories for many homeowners—the 1930s to 1960s. “Mid-century modern,” is represented by functionality, sleek lines, minimal ornamentation, and mixed materials in both traditional and non-traditional elements. During and following World War II, many German designers migrated to American, bringing with them Bauhaus styling, a vision of bridging the gap between art and industry by combining crafts with fine arts. Greatly influenced by American technology, industry, and economics, they embraced a fresh energy for growth. The resulting design style emphasized comfort and simplicity. American designers like Herman Miller, Charles and Ray Eames, Harry

Bertoia, and Eero Saarinen brought us furniture classics we are now enhancing with fresher materials and unique implemenations that improve upon these timeless designs. Combinations of hammered metals; an influx of gold and copper tones paired with silvers; Plexiglas plus glittery metallics; and thick, shaggy textures amidst softer velvets and chenilles add depth and interest in a way their predecessors would never have expected. You can furnish your Mid-century modern room with authentic pieces or take advantage of the adaptations and copies that are available to fit any budget. Another option is to search out vintage furniture. Avoid too many patterns and stay within a color range, particularly with wood. However you go about achieving it, remember that the Mid-century modern look is timeless and will serve you well for years to come.
In this iteration of the Profile Mirror, a circular beveled mirror rests in an open-patterned stainless-steel frame with a “Tapestry Gold” finish.

COMBINING CONCEPTS MERGING ONE COUPLE’S MODERN AND TRANSITIONAL STYLES
WHEN THE OWNERS proached our owner, Garth of this Naples condo ap-
Wurstle about their remodeling project, they had three things they wanted to accomplish. First, they wanted to dramatically update the look of their kitchen and other cabinetry as part of a complete remodeling project managed by Zynda Custom Homes and Remodeling. Second, they wanted their custom cabinetry to merge two different styles—contemporary and transitional. Third, they needed a kitchen that provided extensive storage to give them a place for important and memorable items they had collected during their marriage and for entertaining family and friends. Changing the layout of the kitchen to improve functionality was step
20 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E
one. Providing counter space for preparation is essential we balanced their new kitchen layout by placing the refrigerator and dual ovens on opposite ends of the kitchen with the counter inbetween. The addition of stainless steel rollout pantries allows the clients to easily access, cook and use the kitchen on a daily basis without having to clutter up the counter with spices and kitchen equipment. Dual trash cans were also important for recycling or overflow for large gatherings when needed. A common problem in high rise condominiums is fixed plumbing that runs between floors and units. On the island we created an attractive casing by covering them in backlit ribbed glass that matched the cabinets on the back wall and the touch latch glass doors on the front the island. The plumbing is now a beautiful feature in the kitchen
and showcases how a problem can be turned into a positive. A bistro table extension was added to the end of the island for light dining when needed. Unlike many kitchens we see today, the owners knew they did not want another white kitchen so we stained their sleek, flat front cabinets a rich glossy brown and finished them with stainless steel pulls. The taupe island adds contrast utilizing glass, stainless steel frames and matte finishes creating a truly unique centerpiece for the great room. The counters are two different tones of quartz and provide the look and feel of natural stone with sparkles and veining. Quartz is a great option for kitchens as it is low maintenance when compared to granite or marble. Throughout this project, the collaboration and communication between the remodeler, the clients and our design team was exceptional. Working together we created a one-of-a-kind kitchen that is beautiful and functional and one that the owners can enjoy for years to come.

Lanai Living IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA
W
hen people think of Southwest Florida, they think of the sun, the beautiful winter weather, and the water. Escaping icy temperatures and crowded cities, life here revolves around a relaxed pace and outdoor lifestyle. Many people move here for their lanai so here we will answer three commonly asked questions about furnishing this important space.
WHEN LOOKING FOR OUTDOOR FURNITURE, WHAT MATERIALS SHOULD I CONSIDER?
While there are several options, unless you are going with a Teak frame, we always suggest you choose 100% aluminum. Even if you pick furniture wrapped with synthetic wicker, the frame is the foundation of your furniture and choosing one that’s 100% aluminum ensures it will last years. A word of caution: some manufacturers label products as aluminum but it will often be combined with other metals creating a frame that will rust over time. This is something we see at big box stores. We also suggest going with synthetic wicker. Wicker is not actually a material, but a method of weaving. Traditionally, natural plant materials were used to produce a variety of products and wicker was originally made from natural fibers, like rattan. Resin is now used to mimic the look of wicker while creating furniture that is very easy to maintain. Synthetic polyethylene fiber resin wicker is durable, resistant to the sun’s UV radiation and to water - the perfect material for Southwest Florida, especially if you live near the corrosive salt air of the Gulf of Mexico. When resin wicker is used over an aluminum frame, it creates lightweight outdoor furniture with a classic feel. If you want the traditional look of teak, do some research before you buy. While it’s beautiful and timeless, keeping the look of new, polished teak requires maintenance. Regular cleaning will 22 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E
help prevent mildew build-up and discoloration. A quick wash with mild soap and water with some bleach or vinegar mixed in usually does the trick. Use a soft plastic brush as metal brushes can scratch and damage the wood’s surface. If you want to keep the natural golden color of teak, you need to oil the furniture every three or four months. Keeping the furniture out of direct sunlight also helps preserve the color. If you don’t want to do that work, weathered teak is a popular look. Without the protective oil covering teak takes on a beautiful, antiqued look with silver and grey hues.
I AM WORRIED ABOUT FABRICS MOLDING IN THE FLORIDA HEAT AND HUMIDITY. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS FOR DURABLE FABRICS?
Fabric is a huge concern for people as they purchase outdoor furniture. Everyone has seen old, moldy looking cushions on a lanai and it scares
people as they pick their own seats. Thankfully we live in the age of durable and beautiful outdoor fabrics! Companies like Sunbrella have created wonderful fabrics that stand up to the elements. In fact, these fabrics look and feel so nice, many people with pets and kids, or those who just like to live on their couches without fear of permanent damage are now using outdoor fabrics (and furniture!) inside their homes. While nothing is 100% mold resistant, here are a few things you should know: • Mold loves dirt. If you keep your cushions and fabric surfaces as dirt free as possible, you will eliminate most of your mold problems. Shake cushions off once a week, or at least brush off visible dirt as often as possible. If cushions get really dirty from pets, kids, or entertaining mishaps, just clean the cushions with a solution of mild soap and water, rinse thoroughly, and then allow to dry.
• The best outdoor fabrics are solution dyed acrylics. Acrylic is a synthetic fiber with a soft wool like feel and is extremely colorfast and resistant to stains. The solution dyeing process is an intensive one and it turns acrylic into an amazingly strong fiber. During this process, the acrylic fiber is actually dyed while it is still in a viscous form. The color is completely locked in before the fiber even becomes a solid. This means you can use bleach to clean tough stains and the color won’t fade. • Look for marine-grade cushions. Found on boats, these cushions won’t fall apart after getting wet because they are made to get soaked and then dry completely in a marine environment. Don’t spend the money to get the right fabric if you are going to wrap it around cushions that will decay within a couple years.

DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR ME AS I PLAN OUT THE SEATING AREAS IN MY LANAI?
With an extensive background in interior design, we suggest approaching your lanai like any other area of your house. How you will be using the space and how much time will you spend in your outdoor living space? Will this be a main entertaining area? When will you
be using the lanai? How do you want to feel when you’re in the space? Next, take a look at the space you have available. While many lanais are customdesigned here in Southwest Florida and people are able to create separate seating groups for lounging and eating, sometimes you won’t have that luxury. Knowing how you will use the space helps you decide which
seating groups you want to emphasize and which aren’t as important. For example, if you know you love to have after dinner drinks outside you might opt for a smaller outdoor dining area and use the extra space for more seating and lounging options. As you think about laying out your lanai, pick a focal point: the view of the beach or golf course, a fireplace, the pool, etc. Orientate the main seating areas around that focal point, making it the anchor point for the lanai. Keep scale in mind. We take measurements of your lanai and then use computer programs to make sure your furniture isn’t dwarfed by or dominate your space. You might like the look of substantial wicker pieces but if your lanai can’t support their “weight”, your space will feel cramped. The same goes for pieces with thin lines—they can be overtaken by the scale of a larger lanai so you will need to think about adding elements to help your furniture feel like it fits. Consider carrying the colors and themes from inside your home outside. Seamless indoor/outdoor living is easiest to achieve when there’s a cohesive flow between rooms. Bring photos, pillows, or fabric and paint swatches with you when you go shopping to match the colors and look of your interior space with your exterior furniture.

Putting Your Best Foot Forward
OUR LOVE AFFAIR WITH SHOES Shoes. We adore them. We create fairy tales around them: “Cinderella… proof that a pair of shoes can change your life.” We politicize them: “I did not have 3,000 pairs of shoes. I had 1,060.” —Imelda Marcos. We inspire cultural change with them: “Don’t judge a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes.” And we buy them. Lots of them. According to the American Apparel and Footwear Association, the U.S. per capita purchase of shoes was 7.8 pairs in 2015 (the most recent year statistics were published on the organization’s website).
TREAT THEM RIGHT We bring our brand new shoes home and hopefully, we treat them right. Leather shoes should be cleaned with a damp cloth and air-dried. Touch-
26 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E
up scuff marks with a damp cloth dipped in baking soda, followed by a gentle buffing with a clean, dry cloth. When it’s time for a polish, follow the manufacturer’s directions carefully. A toothbrush can reach crevices where the shoe leather meets the sole or in cutout designs like those on wingtips. After the polish dries, buff with a soft brush. If you want a high shine, dampen a cloth with water and dab it all over the shoe, then polish with scrunched up pantyhose. Suede and nubuck shoes require a different approach. Both are a form of napped-up leather and respond to a gentle grazing with a white art gum eraser, followed by a gentle brushing with a soft-bristled shoe brush. Lukewarm water and a drop or two of dish detergent on a toothbrush should be sufficient to tackle any stains. Once clean, you should spray them with a commercial shoe protectant made for suede.
STORE THEM PERFECTLY If you can’t see your closet floor under a mound of loose shoes, it’s time to devote some serious thinking to your shoe storage. Inspired Closets has a heavenly solution: the Shoe Shrine®. Installed as part of an overall closet remodel or as a standalone unit, the system provides customized storage with a series of low-profile, easily-adjustable shelves. The slim shelf design saves room and maximizes space, so that the focus is on the shoes. This flexibility is what makes the Shoe Shrine® so popular. Why be locked into one solution, especially with a shared his-and-hers closet? There’s so much difference in men’s and women’s shoes, and not just in sheer quantity! The Shoe Shrine® can also house purses.
SHOW THEM OFF Organizing your shoes can result in an eye-catching array of colors, a logical line of styles, or even a festive seasonal display. Perhaps you have nine-to-five shoes and five-to-nine shoes, a distinct difference in your day and evening footwear. Do you have hobbies or sports that require special shoes? Group them together to make a statement, and to make it easier to grab and go. However you decide to organize your shoes, keeping them clean and repaired, and storing them in a manner that fits you, will help you to always put your best foot forward.
From the moment I saw my first builtin closet I was in love! As a state licensed general contractor located in Naples, Florida, I had been building and remodeling homes for almost 20 years. aking the choice to remodel your home can be as daunting as it is exciting. In the end you will have a new, more functional home but in the meantime the planning can be overwhelming. With the popularity of DIY projects the temptation to take on the remodel yourself can lead to a half-done project and a home that is less functional than before. On the other hand, choosing a professional to take you and your home through the process can be a seemingly scary prospect and can keep people from embarking on a remodel

all together. “We battle this all the time—a contracting license is, for many companies out there, a license to steal. We find over and over our clients have had a less than pleasant experience with someone in our business and our first job is to show them how we are a different company with a different set of ethics. We hold ourselves to the highest standards and it shows in our work and in our excellent relationship with our clients,” says Michael Peel, Co-Founder of ARCS Construction. In fact, the bulk of remodeling work for ARCS Construction comes from word of mouth,
something Michael and his brother, ARCS Construction Co-Founder, Stephen Peel are proud of. Another battle they face in the remodeling world are unrealistic expectations. “We love it when people have ideas but a lot of those ideas can come from popular TV shows that can skew the reality of what a remodeling job costs in different markets.” Michael, Stephen, and Jeneane Bennett, Partner and Director of Business for ARCS Construction, work together to create a remodeling plan that works for the clients’ budget and

vision. “We spend a lot of time managing expectations - the last thing we want to do is go back to the client over and over again with budget adjustments, so we really spend the time at the beginning of the project to set a realistic budget,” says Stephen. The brothers have found their background in new construction to be very helpful. “The lessons learned over the years at out new home division, Gulfstream Homes, has been a huge asset. Not only do we have these great relationships with our trade partners, but knowing how to build a home from the ground up helps as we approach homes that are already built but need a little help,” Michael says as he talks about the differences between new construction and remodeling. “With a remodel we need to anticipate issues that might arise in a home we didn’t build. Because we know both ends of the construction business, it allows us to approach each project with confidence and an extensive knowledge base.” A referral is what led them to a recent remodel in Aqualane Shores. Built in the early 2000s, the home had high ceilings and good bones but a layout and look that didn’t work for the new owners. “We changed every aspect of the home, inside and out, to update it and create a home that people want to live in today,” says Bennett. She worked with the owners to create a totally new and open layout that matched their needs and provided additional value to the home. In the home’s updated great room, new lighting creates a welcoming environment. All the lighting was updated throughout the home which is an important, but sometimes overlooked step. “People think about changing layouts and the kind of furniture and decor they want but lighting is so important and there are great options to choose from that are energy efficient and really enhance the experience of being in the home,” explains Stephen. “Why go through all the work of a remodel and wind up with a dark home at the end? Our job is to think of things clients may have overlooked in the excitement of having a ‘new home’.” Past the great room, the dining room provides a perfect space for entertaining while

providing a transitional path into the kitchen. The team added a dry and wet bar to balance the space a make it more functional. New, light wood floors create a solid foundation throughout the main areas of the home. “We really focused on making the layout work. The home wraps around the lanai and pool area so it has great angles. But you can’t have angles and then walls blocking them so we opened up the space here to make the flow from the great room, dining room and kitchen seamless,” says Bennett. the forest floor sustainable and eco-friendly wood floors
34 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E
w
ith the emphasis on natural products comes the tension of environmental and sustainability concerns. While wood is one of the best renewable materials you can choose, people worry about forest degradation which causes erosion, loss of habitat, and land issues for indigenous people across the planet. Because of those concerns, we’ve seen the rise of “eco-friendly floors” like bamboo and cork. These materials are popular but they can be limited in their durability-especially when compared to hardwood floors. Cork is a softer wood as it comes from the bark of oak trees, whereas
bamboo is in the grass family. Hardwood flooring gives you a durable foundation for your home as well as providing a timeless look. If you are someone who wants a green and healthy home, you have options. In fact, we have built our company around the idea that wood floors can be beautiful and sustainable decades before eco-friendly options were on anyone’s radar. When you consider a wood floor company and manufacturer, ask about their forest management programs or incentives. What are they doing as a company to ensure the health of the forests they pull their materials from? At Naples Flooring, we only rep-
resent Legno Bastone floors because of their beauty, durability, and their commitment to creating a sustainable product. Founded in the 1800’s and still managed by members of the founding family, Legno Bastone gets their raw wood from the best forests in Europe. The trees they select are generally over 150 years old and have been meticulously cared for throughout their existence. By taking trees at such a mature age, the tree gets to go through its entire life cycle which produces wide planks and beautiful grain but also gives forest life a chance to use the tree to its fullest extent. Culling larger trees means the forest is thinned in a way that preserves the nutri-

ents for other, younger trees and opens up shaded areas so they can grow and mature. Also, taking large trees at the end of their life cycle but before they die helps prevents the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The company then plants five trees for every one they take, ensuring the health of the forest for generations to come. Lengno Bastone is a member of the French Forestry Commission which monitors its forests through satellites to protect the health and wellbeing of its trees. Another thing to consider when choosing a hardwood floor is the manufacturing and installation process. Most wood floors are made with glue or processes that contain VOCs. According to the EPA “Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have shortand long-term adverse health effects.” VOCs are found in many household items from paints to air fresheners so if you become concerned about their presence in your home, you should take a look at the products you are bringing inside. VOC concentrations are consistently higher indoors (up to ten times higher) than outdoors because of ventilation differences. They can cause issues like eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, loss of coordination and nausea, and can cause damage to the liver, kidney, and central nervous system. Some VOCs can cause cancer in animals and some are suspected or known to cause cancer in humans. Not something you want in your home! The reason we can confidently install a Legno Bastone floor in a home is because we know we won’t be bring more harmful substances with us. Using a cross panel pattern, eleven ply marine-grade Baltic birch is pressed together using the cold press method with non-VOC wood glue. While this process takes longer (up to 24 hours vs the minutes it can take in other manufacturing processes)

the finished product is stronger than traditional wood floors and won’t leach toxins into your home. And that’s a real concern—here in Florida, our humid weather opens the grain in your wood floors causing them to “breathe” the VOCs into your home. People are finding they are actually allergic to their floors, a painful and costly discovery that has to be remedied in order to make the home livable again. At the end of the day we have a wood floor option we are proud of and that you can confidently choose to put in your home knowing your dollars aren’t going towards the destruction of the environment and local habitats, and you won’t bring harmful chemicals into your home. It turns out your really can have it all!

Q WITH
CLAUDIA LEAH
BEAUTIFULLY ORGANIZED Q: I LOVE THE STRESS-FREE, UNCLUTTERED FEEL OF MY FLORIDA HOME, HOW CAN I KEEP THE NOT-SO-PRETTY STUFF OUT OF SIGHT AND ORGANIZED?
A: This is the perfect time to call in an experienced designer to determine what you have and what you need to get organized. We’re experts at creating a beautiful and functional home that fits your lifestyle. Q: ORGANIZATION SEEMS EASY AND FUN, SO WHY AM I OVERWHELMED?
A: Often times, we see people attempt to organize their home without a defined budget or plan. We begin by establishing your needs, the timeline and investment level for your project. The earlier in the process you enlist our help, the more successful and enjoyable it can be. Q: I LOVE THE VALUE OF BUILT-IN STORAGE, BUT I DON’T WANT TO DEAL WITH THE HEADACHE OF CONSTRUCTION IN MY HOME. WHAT CAN I DO?
A: Built-in storage can work wonders, but it can be a big commitment of both time and money. And contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t always increase the value of your home. Freestanding furniture offers flexibility as your design style and storage needs change. Think outside the box when it comes to storage possibilities!

(OPPOSITE) Bar cabinets are like little crown jewels that can fit into small spaces. Use one as intended or repurpose it. Rolled up towels can take the place of wine bottles and voilà—portable linen closet! (RIGHT) An elegant armoire adds sophistication to any room. This one also adds functionality as a shoe closet. It could easily be adapted to store different items by reconfiguring the (adjustable) interior shelves.
Claudia with HGTV personality and product designer Libby Langdon
Q: MY TELEVISION STICKS OUT LIKE A SORE THUMB! HOW CAN I MAKE IT LOOK INTEGRATED?
A: With the advent of the flat screen, televisions have come a long way. But most are still a big, black distraction for an otherwise pretty room. Updating your entertainment center with a sleek, shallow console and wall-mounting the television is one solution. Or consider setting your television on a glamorous sideboard or buffet. These can be easily reconfigured to hide bulky electronics and other items effectively. Q: I NEED MORE STORAGE, BUT DON’T WANT MY HOUSE TO FEEL CLUTTERED WITH MORE FURNITURE. WHAT CAN I DO?
A: Oftentimes a home can look cluttered and unbalanced by using too many hard furniture pieces. Integrating softer
upholstered pieces for storage is a great way to add breathing room to your space. Ottomans can be phenomenal when used as a coffee table or as the center of a seating area. Storage benches can be tucked into a dressing room or along a hallway. Some benches come outfitted with shoe pockets, making them an ideal option for creating functional entry or closet seating. Custom upholstery and trims really take these pieces to the next level! Q: WHAT’S THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING I SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ORGANIZING MY HOME?
A: Like many tasks in life, you want to do it once, do it right, and enjoy the ride. Have fun and hire the right professional. You’ll have a beautifully organized and happy home with more time to enjoy Naples!

Houseplant 10 TIPS FOR
CARE
Helpful hints to keep your plants full of life
40 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E
Indoor plants are a wonderful way to bring life into your home. Not only do plants add a beautiful design element, they can also create a more emotionally healthy home. A recent Dutch study found that hospital patients with plants in their rooms reported lower levels of stress than those without. Indoor plants also purify the air by removing toxins and increase oxygen in your home. Here is some general care advice as you bring a plant (or several) into your home.
1.
USE WATER AT ROOM TEMPERATURE Extreme water temperatures can shock the plant. Water that’s too hot can cause root damage and can kill your plant. Water that’s too cold can cause dormancy.
2.
KEEP YOUR POTTING SOIL MOIST, BUT NOT WET Soil that’s too dry or too wet will damage the roots of your plant and sometimes over or underwatering can kill a plant. The kind of leaf your plant has determines the amount of water it will need. Plants with lush, thick leaves (like a peace lily or fern) require more water than plants with waxy or leathery leaves like succulents and cacti. A good way to see if your plant is thirsty is by poking your finger into the soil up to your knuckle. If the soil feels damp, then you don’t need to water it. If it feels dry then you need to give it a drink.
3.
SELECT POTS WITH GOOD DRAINAGE Drainage can help you with over and under watering issues so make sure there are drainage holes at the bottom of your pot. For indoor plants, selecting a pot with a saucer will help with overflow and prevent water damage on furniture surfaces. Materials like plastic, metal, and glass will absorb much less water than ceramic or clay, so keep this in mind when selecting pots. Cacti and succulents require special potting mix specifically designed to drain water efficiently. They also need pots with plenty of holes on the bottom which prevents too much moisture from being held in the soil, killing the plants.

5.
LEAVE YOUR PLANTS IN ONE SPOT
4.
PLACE YOUR PLANTS IN ADEQUATE SUNLIGHT Plants need sunlight and the quality, duration, and intensity of light affect a plant’s growth. Avoid putting the plant in direct sunlight. Instead, give them plenty of indirect light by placing them in a well-lit room. Give flowering plants 12-16 hours of light per day and foliage plants 14-16 hours of light per day.
Plants acclimate to their surroundings somewhat slowly, so it’s best you don’t move them around a lot. Take the time to decide where you want your plants to go and leave them there. Also, make sure you don’t pick an area of your home that sees a drastic change in temperature throughout the day. If you do want to move the plant, take it to the new area for an hour a day. Slowly increase the amount of time it’s left in the new area until it has fully adjusted.
6.
USE A BALANCED 10-10-10 FERTILIZER The first 10 stands for nitrogen, second for phosphorus, and the third for potassium. Houseplants will need help from you to get the right nutrients since they can’t pull them from their environment. While most houseplants will be fine with this balanced fertilizer mix, you can always tweak the nutrients for individual plants to get the most color and life out of them. If you have a flowering plant, you can buy a fertilizer that is high in potassium. If you have a foliage plant, you should get a fertilizer or potting soil high in nitrogen.
7.
PRUNE YOUR PLANTS TO KEEP THEM HEALTHY A plant that isn’t pruned can grow out of control and will also outgrow its pot. Certain plants must have their roots pruned at different intervals, so it’s important to read up on how often you should be pruning your plant. Regular pruning also keeps your plant healthy, and to prevents you from having to replant. Make sure you are cutting off dead branches or stems that can attract bugs and always prune above the a leaf node at a 45° angle to promote growth of a fuller more robust plant.
42 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E
8.
AVOID TEA AND COFFEE TREATMENTS While some people claim that adding coffee grounds is good for plants, if you aren’t a seasoned plant pro doing this to plants with a low acidic tolerance can actually kill them. Also, putting coffee or tea into your potted plant can draw flies that can eat the plant’s leaves and the sugars in tea and coffee also make it a perfect breeding ground for these insects.
9.
TAKE TIME TO LEARN ABOUT YOUR PLANTS There are so many great online resources that will give you detailed instructions on how to care for the plants you have chosen. You can also research beforehand to make sure you are getting the right kind of plant for your lifestyle. For example, succulents and cacti are great options for people who want a low maintenance plant. While they can be a little more work in the beginning as you get their soil composition and potting right, they don’t need to be watered as often as other plants. Most houseplants come with a tag that will have their common and scientific name which will be helpful as you research their care instructions.
10.
REALIZE NOT ALL PLANTS WANT TO BE INSIDE Many of the plants sold as houseplants do not really belong in an indoor environment. People unknowingly buy these species only to have them die quickly, discouraging them from buying another indoor plant. This is why it’s important to do a little research before you buy.
Plant Purification ALOE
Not only does this plant have gel that soothes skin burns and cuts, it can also help monitor the air quality in your home. Aloe can clear the air of pollutants found in chemical cleaning products, and when the amount of harmful chemicals in the air becomes excessive, the plant’s leaves will display brown spots. Just an FYI: This plant likes to break the “no direct sun” rule.
ENGLISH IVY
NASA scientists listed English ivy as the number one best airfiltering houseplant and it is the most effective plant when it comes to absorbing formaldehyde. It’s also incredibly easy to grow and adaptable—try it as a hanging or floor plant. Grow in moderate temperatures and medium sunlight.
RED-EDGED DRACAENA This beautiful, vibrant plant can grow to be ceiling-height (15-foot dracaenas are common), making it a great plant for decorating and filling up space. It also removes toxins including xylene, trichloroethylene and formaldehyde from the air and grows best in sunlight.
RUBBER TREE
Rubber trees are good for cleaning the air and are one of the easiest plants to grow, as they thrive even in dim lighting and cooler climates. This low-maintenance plant is a powerful toxin eliminator and air purifier.

A GUIDE TO
Wine Tasting
“WINE IS BOTTLED POETRY,”
as Robert Louis Stevenson said and it’s hard not to agree with him when you understand the time and tradition that goes into a single bottle of wine. One skill that can help you in business and social settings is a basic knowledge of wine tasting. While there is so much you can learn about the tasting process, here are four simple steps from expert sommeliers that will help you up your tasting game, refine you palate, and sharpen your ability to recall the wines you try. While these are pro moves, they are actually simple to understand and can help to improve your wine knowledge.
44 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E
1. Look at the wine under neutral lighting. The color of a wine will clue you in to what you can expect it to taste like. Light and bright white wines are usually crisp and refreshing while a wine that’s a deeper shade of yellow has typically been aged in a barrel and will have a smoother, richer taste. If a red wine is light red, even approaching pink, it should taste light and bright, maybe even be a little tart or “fresh”. As the hue of the red wine gets darker the wine will become bolder and richer. 2. Second, smell the wine using orthonasal olfaction (fancy for breathing through your nose) to identify aromas.
Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon The Hess Collection signature Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon comes from their estate Veeder Hills Vineyard. The elevation of this vineyard ranges from 600 to 1,120 feet, and its steep slopes and sedimentary clay and shale soils restrict root growth, resulting in Mount Veeder’s hallmark small berries with intense fruit flavors. A touch more Malbec, this vintage sets the stage for a classic mountain Cabernet led by aromas of wild mountain raspberry and Bing cherry. $65
Estate Grown Chardonnay This Chardonnay pairs well with poached or grilled seafood, shrimp or crab, and triple crème cheeses. From the Su’skol vineyard, the grapes are carefully farmed to emphasize fruit with wonderful acidity and balance, and demonstrates the impact of the moderate temperatures influenced by nearby San Pablo Bay. Aged for 9 months in barrels and stirred weekly for 4 months, this complex wine shows aromas and flavors of apple, white pear and a slight touch of tropical fruits, accented by honeysuckle. $22
Mendocino Zinfandel
3. Next (and the best step!) taste the wine to figure out its structure (sour, bitter, sweet) and flavors (fruit, oak, etc.) 4. Lastly decide if you like the wine. While this might seem obvious, people can feel pressure to like wines that seem sophisticated or popular. Develop your own profile that you can store in your memory just like a pro. Now that you have some tasting tools, here are three wines from the Hess Collection Winery. These delicious wines are a great addition to an established collection or they can help you expand your personal wine selection.
To order online or for more information, visit hesscollection.com.
Ruby red in color this wine also has indigo blue and violet hues. There is a concentration of juicy bright cherry, pomegranate and boysenberry aromas followed by darker notes of cassis and pepper. Flavors are abundant, led by raspberry and currants, surrounded by baking spices of clove, cinnamon and allspice. On the palate, one will experience a plush well-rounded mouthfeel to a lingering finish of fine grained tannins up lifting the fruit with hints of toasty French oak. $18

ON THE
PRAIRIE An Architect Re-envisions Southwest Florida Style
46 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E
BY CHANNING SPANO PHOTOGRAPHY BY M.E. PARKER
WHETHER IT’S WHAT PEOPLE want or what they think is necessary, sometimes architecture can be a little redundant in Southwest Florida. From the dominating Mediterranean style of the early 2000s to the West Indies feel of today, everyone seems to jump on the same style wagon at the same time. While there is nothing wrong with homes sporting those common architectural styles, people can be pressured into designing the house they think other people will want and not the home they would have designed if they felt there was some flexibly in the market. It takes someone with vision, like Dan Sater of The Sater Design Collection to show people they can build any type of home they want here in paradise. As Sater and his wife set out to build their own home, they decided to not succumb to the pressure to make something for the resale value or because it was expected that they have certain things inside or out. “People tour models and they see homes with a certain architectural look, or large tubs, or formal dining rooms and they think that’s what they have to have because that’s what everyone else is doing. Concerned about resale value, they end up adding elements to their home they don’t use, and really don’t even want to begin with. I see that beginning to change. More and more people are realizing there is room for different architectural styles here in Southwest Florida,” says Sater. “In fact we have a rich history of architecture that’s unique to this state so I’m excited to see elements creeping back into current designs.” The Saters wanted a space that worked for their own lifestyle after living in a home and community that didn’t quite suit their current needs. “We really took a look at how we lived. For example we didn’t put in a pool. We had one before and it just never got used so we decided to not spend the money on a pool and the continuing maintenance costs because it just doesn’t fit how my wife and I live. Don’t be afraid to make a home that actually works for you.” The Saters also deviated from the expected with their home’s beautiful prairie-style architecture. Defined by strong horizontal lines, early examples of prairie-style homes were developed by Frank Lloyd Wright and his contemporaries to complement the flat prairie landscape. These homes appear to grow out of the ground, with a low pitched, overhanging hipped or gable roofs. It was a style they had loved for a long time and after finding a one acre lot in the perfect community, they decided to create their dream home complete with all the features suited for their aesthetic and lifestyle.
YOUR HOME MAG AZ INE | 47
(PREVIOUS PAGE) “We love the feel of country living right by the city so this lot was the perfect fit for us and for this house,” explains Sater. The first step was to clear the lot and the Saters made the decision to keep existing clusters of pine and oak trees. “This style of home needs nature to provide context and scale and the trees here were beautiful. People pay hundreds of dollars for these pines and oaks so we had to incorporate them into the design,” Sater explains. From the paver driveway, the beautiful exterior details are lit with perfectly placed outdoor lights. Stacked stone accents frame the large front porch and the gables above give the illusion of a second story. The Anderson windows with aptly-named prairie-style grids provide a beautiful detail that’s mimicked in the ceiling beams inside.
48 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E
(OPPOSITE) In keeping with the theme of building a house that worked for them, the Saters decided to turn the dining room into a music area. “We don’t really do a lot of formal entertaining and when we do have large gatherings, we have a big table that we put in the great room/kitchen area. So for us this room worked best as a music space.” This home plan has quickly become one of the most popular plans Sater Design offers and many people choose to turn this space into another bedroom. (ABOVE) The focal point of the comfortable great room is a set of built-ins with a repurposed wood accent. “We were able to
take some of the leftover wood from the ceilings on the lanai and use it in the great room,” says Sater. “It’s so much better to look for creative alternatives than to throw something out.” Under beams that match the grids in the windows, leather sleeper sofas are both comfortable and practical and act as overflow sleeping areas for guests. On the other end of the great room is the office, strategically placed so Sater isn’t totally isolated from the rest of the house as he works. If more privacy is needed, modern barn style doors can be closed. “While the outside of the house is traditional, my wife found she liked a more transitional look inside. It’s a great combination of new and old,” Sater explains.

(LEFT) The great room flows directly into the airy kitchen. Shaker-style cabinetry is set against a subway tile backsplash with metallic accent tiles. A modern stainless steel hood and Edison bulb lights are a perfect example of how modern and traditional elements blend seamlessly in this home. In the nook, a handmade Amish hutch was custom built for the space by the Millers in Sarasota. “We were familiar with the family who made the piece because of our time in Amish country in Ohio. They make such high-quality furniture pieces that it’s an instant heirloom. We commissioned them to make a few pieces throughout the home.” (ABOVE) The home office features the other Amish-made pieces. The desk and chair are both handmade in Sarasota—a testament to the fact that you don’t have to go very far to find unique, highquality items for you home. Simple and elegant dark wood built-ins house Sater’s design books which provide inspiration for his future projects and plans.

The lanai and fire pit area provide a beautiful space for relaxing and entertaining. Facing a large, fenced-in back yard that their dogs enjoy, rocking chairs give the space a comfortable and traditional feel. Beautiful shell stone pavers provide the perfect foundation for the fire pit area under an architectural overhang. Sater was also careful to select materials that would withstand the hot and humid Florida weather while still creating a beautiful exterior. “We wanted to keep maintenance to a minimum with the outside of the home so all the materials we chose are easy to care for and are very durable.

The master suite is tranquil with shades of soft blue. “We wanted to keep this room simple and comfortable,” says Sater. Through the hall, the master bath sports more of the beautifully stained woods found throughout the home. In the large shower, neutral tiles with dark accents transition from the wall to the floor for a seamless look. “We chose not to put in a tub. We found we never used the one in our old house and it just became something we had to dust. I’m also seeing more and more people who also feel a tub is a waste of space or doesn’t match their lifestyle needs so they are opting for larger showers,” says Sater.

SPRING FLAVORS
The perfect spring meal, mushroom and Parmesan risotto with roasted asparagus is a delicious pairing. Both mushrooms and asparagus are traditionally associated with early spring because mushrooms can be easily dried and preserved for use throughout the year and can be eaten before gardens are producing, while asparagus is one of the first vegetables of spring. ROASTED ASPARAGUS 1 lb asparagus spears 1-2 tbsp. olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced Kosher salt Freshly grated black pepper Lemon juice (or balsamic vinegar)

1. Preheat your oven to 400째F (205째C). Rinse the asparagus spears. If the ends are tough, break them off or use a vegetable peeler to peel away the tough outer skin of the fatter ends of the asparagus. 2. Line a roasting pan with foil. Arrange the asparagus spears in a single layer on the lined roasting pan. Drizzle with and rub the spears all over with the olive oil to coat. Sprinkle with
salt, pepper, and minced garlic, and rub over the asparagus spears to evenly distribute. 3. Roast at 400째F (205째C) for 10 minutes or until the asparagus is just lightly browned and tender when you pierce with a fork. 4. To serve, drizzle with fresh lemon juice or balsamic vinegar, and if you want, a sprinkling of grated Parmesan cheese. Yields 4 servings.
MUSHROOM AND PARMESAN RISOTTO 2 tbsp. butter 2 cups flavorful mushrooms such as shiitake, chanterelle, or oyster mushrooms; cleaned, trimmed, and cut into half inch to inch pieces
⅔ cup brandy, vermouth, or dry white wine 5-6 cups chicken stock (use vegetable stock for a vegetarian option)
⅓ cup of peeled and minced shallots (OR 1/3 cup of yellow or white onion, finely chopped) 1¾ cups arborio rice or other risotto rice
⅓ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 tbsp. chopped fresh parsley or chives
1. In a saucepan, bring stock to a simmer. 2. Sauté the mushrooms by first melting the butter in a deep, heavy saucepan over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms and shallots and sauté about 5 minutes (if using chanterelles, dry sauté first for a minute or two and let the mushrooms cook in their own juices before adding the butter). 3. Add the rice and stir to combine. Add brandy, bring to a boil, and reduce liquid by half, about 3-4 minutes. 4. Add simmering stock, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring enough to keep the rice from sticking to the edges of the pan. Stir the rice almost constantly— stirring separates off the starch from the rice, making the creamy sauce you’re looking for in a risotto. Wait until the stock is almost completely absorbed before adding the next 1/2 cup. This process will take about 25 minutes. The rice should be just cooked and slightly chewy. 5. Stir in the Parmesan cheese and season to taste with salt and pepper. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley or chives. Yields 4-6 servings.
