elcome Summer! Slower days, less traffic, and you can finally get into your favorite restaurant without a wait. Not that we don’t love our Northern friends, but it’s nice to have a less busy version of Southwest Florida once again.

Take time to look at our outdoor living articles. Both Claudia Leah and the team at the Outdoor Décor Store (pages 20 and 40) give their tips and ideas on how to create the best outdoor living space possible no matter what size lanai you have.

It’s also time to start thinking about hurricane season and, after last year, you may have found your preparations a little lacking or have exhausted your supplies. Check out page 46 for some helpful ideas on what to have stored and ready in the event of an evacuation. Make sure you have a plan for all the members of your family including your pets.

On a happier note, summer is also the best time for a pool party so we have some delicious recipes this issue including four fantastic cocktails that will keep you cool and relaxed as you lounge by the water.

Urban Retreat A NEW LOOK FOR OLD NAPLES THE POINCIANA COTTAGE represents a new design aesthetic Naples has not yet experienced.

Located on 6th Street, right off 5th Avenue South, the cottage’s urban décor and loft-like feel fits perfectly into this downtown space. Warm woods, unique stone accents, Old Chicago-style brick, and dark mullions come together to create an environment that blends the best city of living with the relaxed Naples style people love and expect when buying a home like the Poinciana Cottage.

The cottage is the middle home in a line of three unique properties by developer Kristen Williams.

Williams has managed to create a feeling of history and established design with this project, and it’s not unusual for passersby to take photos of the homes thinking they are walking past historic Naples cottages. Although this is a brand new build, the unique elements woven throughout the interior and exterior of the home gives it a timeless feel.

“There is a history to this space,” explains broker Mary Katherine White, who co-lists this home with Chris Wells of Olde Naples Real Estate. “A Naples pioneer and artist moved from England and settled on the property in the 1940s. He began painting when 6th Street was just a swamp and Naples didn’t yet boast one of the best downtowns in the county. This artist left a visual heritage in his art studio which was located at the back of the property.” Williams moved the studio and 2,000 of his paintings to the Collier County Museum before the unredeemable houses were torn down. Now, this crisp new home is standing tall and proud, adding to the beauty of downtown Old Naples.

The home’s layout was created to take advantage of the indoor/ outdoor living opportunities so many people desire when they move to Naples. By putting the kitchen at the front of the home, Williams was able to place the seating areas in a way that maximizes access to the pool and courtyard. When people enter the home and move into the spacious kitchen and dining room area, their first instinct is to touch the unusual leathered black and white granite above the gas Wolf range. The custom island with built-in seating adds more work space and creates an interesting conversation piece. The table sits below two cinematic-inspired lights—just the beginning of the great lighting choices Williams sprinkled throughout the home.

The old world brick walls add warmth and uniqueness to the room. “You rarely see brick of any kind in Naples but I think this home shows how well it works in our coastal setting,” says Wells.

The custom cabinetry in Chantilly White by Ruffino Cabinetry is topped with Calcutta Statuario marble counters. Aged iron Alice sconces flank the sink and add an industrial-chic vibe.

Williams kept the wood surfaces in the home light and the lines clean and modern but has accented them with classic elements like the hide rug and nature art prints. LIVING THE OUTDOOR LIFE I have a new lanai space. What are some tips for furnishing my outdoor living area?

Approach your outdoor area just like your indoor rooms using every inch wisely. Choose pieces with complementary textures and colors but don’t feel pressured to purchase all of the items in a set. Take time to layer and build your outdoor retreat!

Incorporate sofas, side tables, chairs, ottomans and coffee tables—play with color because this is a space that gives you freedom to be bolder than you typically would be indoors.

One way to achieve this well-planned look is through accents like outdoor rugs, pillows, and throws with luxurious trims or mixing patterns to create a curated appeal. I also suggest you use mature plants to make the space feel more established. Don’t just rely on the vegetation outside, bring in color and texture through unique planters filled with a variety of flowers, shrubs and even herbs for the accomplished home chef.

Lighting can add function and also create a magical mood. There are so many wonderful options, from string lights to lanterns to battery operated lamps with shades made from outdoor fabrics, there’s no reason to have harsh floodlights illuminating your space, blinding you and your guests!

I have multiple seating areas around my lanai and I’m not sure how to create a cohesive flow between them. What should I do?

Of course, a professional can guide you through the process of setting up your outdoor space if you feel a little lost, but if you want to tackle this area on your own, apply the principles of design (scale/proportion, balance, contrast, pattern, emphasis, harmony, and movement) to your lanai. Always measure the space as your eye is easily fooled and without planning, you could get the scale and proportion of your seating areas all wrong. A costly mistake!

Envision daily life on your lanai. Will you be entertaining often, or will it be a laid back family hangout? Do you like to dine al fresco or would more lounging options be a better fit? The way you will use the space dictates the layout and what areas you should emphasize.

Pay attention to flow—how will you naturally move through the space? You don’t want to carry platters from the grill or outdoor kitchen through a maze of couches and chairs, so set up the space in an intuitive way.

I love the look of outdoor drapes I see at some local restaurants and hotels. How can I replicate that look in my own home?

There have been so many advances in outdoor fabrics and hardware—these mainly stationary panels stand up to the sun’s UV rays and are easy to clean so don’t hesitate to add them to your space. Plus, they make your lanai feel like a resort! Typically, I suggest a solid color for these draperies to keep things simple and elegant, especially if you have furniture with a patterned fabric. A word of caution: lanais in Naples tend to be tall spaces so the outdoor panels available at retail chains will probably be too short and unsubstantial. Working with a designer will allow you to create custom draperies that will last for years and are well worth the small increase in your initial investment.

(OPPOSITE) Mix and match textures, colors, and accessories to create a design that invites people to relax. Plants in beautiful pots will give your lanai some freshness and life.

(ABOVE) Create a cozy living space on your lanai by incorporating a fire table. In addition to adding ambiance, they can be a focal point in your seating area. If your ceilings are at least ten-feet tall, you can put the fire table under covered spaces. (RIGHT) Outdoor furniture is now just as luxurious as indoor pieces. Manufacturers have added reclining chairs with mechanisms that stand up to the elements and can even be motorized with rechargeable lithium battery packs. CARPET IS STILL VERY POPULAR for many reasons even though it might seem like wood floors are dominating the market.

We believe there is a carpet for everyone! A great choice for many rooms, carpeting is softer, warmer, and thanks to some advances in stain-resistance (some are 100% waterproof), it’s great for people with kids and those who plan to age in place.

While a neutral palette is still a great foundation for your home, the 2018 trend of incorporating more color has hit the carpet industry as well. Bold colors are being used to create a beautiful anchor point for a room. It’s also a great way to add color without purchasing bold furniture you may tire of in a year or two. You can build a whole room from the carpet up, choosing neutral furniture and styles that enhance a custom rug.

Blues and grays are always popular, especially in our seaside market. Both colors provide a range of hues from pastel to vibrant, so they have universal appeal.

When someone comes into the store, we ask them if they are interested in a carpet that’s plush and thick or short and tight. The main reason we ask is because people can be bothered by vacuum lines and footprints in their carpet. A thick carpet will show those while shorter ones won’t. Keep that in mind as you buy—this is an investment into your home and you don’t want to be frustrated by your carpet every time you vacuum.

When it comes to texture, carpet offers a wide range of options that can be broken down into a three categories: soft, textured, and ribbed. The softness of carpet is what makes it so unique and there is a surge in the carpet market as people return to this luxurious feel.

Textured carpet uses traditional lines, abstract shapes, carving, and trending patterns like chevrons to create either a repeating pattern or a randomized look. Texture also creates a fun feel as you walk through your home.

Ribbed carpet tends to be used in more industrial settings but the sleek, clean look can work in modern homes. It’s also practical for indoor/outdoor carpets and minimalist area rugs.

Geometric patterns can be achieved through texture or color. No matter how this look is created, these modern carpets add a beautiful and sophisticated look to your home.

A plush carpet might feel great but if you will be bothered by vacuum lines and footprints, then a shorter carpet is your best bet. (BELOW) Color is back! Adding color to your room through carpet is a creative way to make a statement and allows you to purchase more neutral furniture pieces without sacrificing the wow factor.

Moroccan trellis designs and hexagons are also a trend for carpets and walls.

For years people have seen carpet as less durable and more difficult to maintain than wood or tile floors; however, that perception is changing thanks to advancements in the industry and the reality of living with other flooring surfaces. Wood needs to be resealed from time to time, tile can chip, and grout ages so maintenance-free floors are really a myth. Companies like Shaw have developed their Tuftex carpet which won’t absorb liquid for up to four hours and when you combine that with a waterproof carpet pad you wind up with a floor that can stand up to the wear and tear of even the most energetic kids and pets.

Carpet is a beautiful and practical option with a modern look and modern durability for today’s family and home. With a wide range of colors, textures, and patterns, there is a carpet out there for you!

DIFFERENT ANGLES one couple’s take on the remodeling process

W

hile we can offer you tons of ideas and advice for remodeling your home, it can be helpful to listen to the counsel of someone who has been on the other side of the remodeling process—the homeowner.

Over the years we’ve cultivated relationships with many outstanding clients but one couple in particular brings a level of knowledge that we, as the general contractors, appreciate and enjoy. They’ve tackled 25 projects together in their 33 years of marriage and we are about to embark on our fifth project with this downtown Naples couple. We wanted you to hear firsthand from this husband and

wife team as they give you their take on the remodeling process in South Florida.

WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE LOOK FOR IN A REMODELING COMPANY?

Do your research. Of course you should look for a team of professional, dedicated visionaries but we also think experience is key and so find a company that has worked on comparable projects. If we are remodeling a condo we want a general contractor who understands the unique challenges that kind of property brings. We also look for a company who works with multiple

subcontractors as that reduces the potential for delay during the project. If they only have one tile installer what happens if he gets sick or there is a backlog of projects? A company that has multiple, equally qualified subcontractors has been key on so many of our projects. Also when you work with a company over and over again like we do, you learn which people you click which makes each project more enjoyable.

Ask to see a company’s most current projects in person. We suggest you walk through a home and see the level of craftsmanship and detail. Only view projects that are two years old or newer because there is a much greater

chance the subcontractors who did the work in that home will also be doing the work on your project. We also suggest going to current worksites because you will get a firsthand look at the company’s process. A messy worksite means a messy mind and it also speaks to the level of respect a company has for your home and for their subcontractors. ARCS Construction makes sure the site is cleaned every evening and that sets the tone for the next team in the morning. Be meticulous with references—ask them specific questions about their experience. What went wrong during the project and how did that company overcome those issue? Did they offer timely

solutions, were they easily available when you had a question, did they welcome your design ideas and input?

IN YOUR OPINION, WHO SHOULD AND SHOULD NOT TACKLE A REMODELING PROJECT?

Over the years we’ve had so many friends and family members ask us this question and we have been able to observe many different people go through a remodeling process. Our conclusion; the people who will enjoy the process the most and get the most out of their home are the people who are flexible. There

is no straightforward remodeling project and there will be issues—it just depends on how many! From acts of God to man-made mistakes outside of your contractor’s control, prepare yourself for setbacks. For example, you can design a whole project around a tile you like and then when it’s finally time to order the tile it’s been discontinued by the manufacturer. How will you react? Will this throw you and the project into chaos or will you be able to regroup and work with your design team to find an equally beautiful solution? You need to be someone who can manage their own expectations throughout the process and truly roll with the punches a bit.

It also helps to be a decisive person. We’ve heard over and over again from many of the remodeling companies we’ve used in the past (including ARCS Construction) that most of the delays actually come from clients who can’t make a decision. If you take two weeks to decide on a color for your new kitchen cabinets, you can hold up multiple aspects of the remodel. Just a few of those delays can set a project back months.

WHAT DIFFERENCES SHOULD PEOPLE EXPECT WHEN REMODELING HERE VS. UP NORTH?

The way people live in Naples is totally different. Here you really need to focus on the outdoor space as they are just as important (if not more important) as indoor rooms. You will live and entertain on your lanai all year so have a realistic budget set aside. In the kitchen, the emphasis isn’t on the oven and range like it is

up north, it’s on the refrigerator. Meals revolve around salads and lighter food here, not soups and roasts. The permitting process can also be different in Naples. With so much building happening here it can take much longer for permits to come through.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE REMODELING PROCESS?

The metamorphosis! Remodeling allows us to infuse a home with our own unique perspective and we love adding a wow factor into each project we touch. There is something so satisfying about the transformation process and I want someone who is thinking about a remodeling venture to realize they can have so much fun in the process. This can be a wonderful creative outlet. Take photos of the house before construction starts and then document the process. Believe me, five or six months down the road you won’t remember

HOME OFFICE THE MODERN LIFE CAN BE A SEDENTARY ONE.

Our whole world is geared for the comfort of sitting, from work to home, and now doctors and researchers are finding that the seated life isn’t the best life. The phrase “sitting is the new smoking” was coined a few years ago in response to the growing problem and since then study after study has backed up that saying. In fact, an article published in October 2017 in the Annals of Internal Medicine showed just how dangerous this sedentary life can be and that your before or after work exercise routine isn’t enough to combat a day of sitting. This study, based on nearly 8,000 adults, found a direct relationship between the time you spend sitting and your risk of early mortality—from any cause! The good news? People who sit for less than 30 minutes at a time have a lower risk of early death.

Researches have learned it’s about changing your position—you can sit or stand at work, just make sure you are switching between the two every half hour and breaking up the day with small walks. As this information has become available, more and more office furniture companies have changed their desks and chairs to help combat the scary statistics.

For many people, especially here in Southwest Florida, their home office is their main business area but they don’t often think about making this a healthy space in their home. There are so many great desk options on the market so it would be hard to find one that didn’t work for your specific needs and home office space.

A RICH TRADITION historical flooring techniques for the modern world

P

eople have enjoyed wood floors for hundreds of years. While those first floors were a little rough and typically unfinished planks on wooden joists, they were the starting point for the beautiful wood floors we have today. Because of the vibrant European forests that offered an abundance of older trees, hardwoods became the flooring of choice in Europe’s most affluent homes and palaces in the 1600s. These floors were quickly refined during the Baroque Era and became beautiful expressions of artistic talent as the French techniques found in parquetry and marquetry were extended to flooring. In 17th century France, the herringbone pattern was developed and quickly become a favorite flooring technique for kings and nobles. Like the workmanship seen in the furniture of that era, these floors were made from handcut wood fitted together in three-dimensional designs. The wood was then scraped, rubbed with sand, stained, and polished to a glossy finish. It was the perfect flooring for a palace ballroom or throne room and, due to the amazing craftsmanship, some of these original

floors still exist more than 400 years later.

The herringbone can be installed in several configurations and a popular variation on classic herringbone, the Chevron or French herringbone, is prominent in many prestigious European Chateaus. With the prominence of the chevron in interior design over the last few years and the demand for more interesting and high-end flooring options, this European tradition has become popular in homes across the country.

Because of it’s versatility, today herringbone or chevron patterns can be used in homes ranging from modern to traditional. The color you choose can alter the look and feel of your floors so work with your designer or someone in our showroom to make sure you are getting the right aesthetic through color.

The movement in the pattern also means there will be a variation in how the colors appear so remember this is a very dynamic flooring choice as you select your color and finish. Turning the Corner: A Look Back and Forward at Cubism

C

ubism as an art genre defies literal perception. It makes us feel, at first, confusion. But then, as though ascending from a hiddenbut-familiar, dark place, (or might we consider, descending a staircase) the comforting sensation of realization drifts into focus. “AH! I get it!” we might say, the longer we look.

For many, Cubism occupies the defined status of being challenging to enjoy and interpret. Still, there are masters of the form with whom most would be familiar—by name if not by works. Chief among them are Pablo

Picasso and Georges Braque. Their early exploration in the techniques of observing, dismantling, re-faceting and reassembling time, space and matter function as the very foundation of a genre with influences reaching all the way into the present.

Cubism isn’t dead. Indeed, in the same way artworks in Cubism posit a retelling of our understanding of the natural order of things, Cubism itself lives outside of the normal progression of time. A short study of the origins of the technique will soon lead the curious appreciator down

avenues as disparate as Futurism, Constructivism and Art Deco. It is certainly a surprising realization that such an abstract form can be so viscerally felt all around us in modern art and design.

Cubism is echoed in the literary works of Gertrude Stein and William Faulkner by employing repetition and repetitive phrases as building blocks in passages and even entire chapters. There are a handful of surviving experiments in Cubist architecture—mostly in the Czech Republic. Other examples of related themes in Cubism can be found in the deconstructionist mentality of art deco designers and artists such as Juan Gris as seen in his painting Guitar and Newspaper (1925).

Cubism’s geometric shapes and forms were adopted and utilized by designers of everything from functional housewares and appliances to home decor and jewelry. With the arrival of the huge advertising boom of the 1920s and 1930s, the designs seen in magazine advertisements and theatre posters also reflected the influence of the forms of Cubism.

Emillions artist Alain Beraud, a renowned French painter who works almost exclusively in Cubism, describes the genesis of this style as an extension of experiential explorations.

Says Beraud, “In the history of art, Cubism has always been a particular artistic current.

The creators of Cubism, Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso and the other masters of Cubism, lived in a period that was rich in encounters. They met with great intellectuals, writers, thinkers and philosophers. These encounters influenced their research on Cubism.”

Alain describes his work as “Neo-Cubism.” His contemporary take on this seminal art form is vibrant and engaging, even while dissecting and reconstructing quotidian activities.

In Part 2 of this series, we will offer a more in-depth look at Alain’s work and what motivates him to delve into a medium under-represented in today’s art.

Until then, we should all do ourselves a favor and seek out works in Cubism to really take time to unearth the feelings and ideas that are encoded within them.

I also think a transitional design creates a very welcoming blend of modern and traditional in a family home.

Start with a durable rug. I love the look and feel of natural fibers and they create an easy-to-clean foundation for any room. Shorter carpet means they will hold fewer crumbs—which is important if you are enjoying snacks in your family hangout space.

Next, I select comfortable furniture. These are pieces your family will actually use for movie and game nights so it’s important to remember that family-friendly design needs to be cozy and usable. For a durable fabric, I like to use Thibaut Performance Fabrics because it’s easy to care for and

preparing for

HURRICANE SEASON With Irma still fresh in the minds of Naples residents, we face another hurricane season. Hopefully this year will be a quiet one for us but it’s always good to be prepared for the worst as the season approaches. By starting early, you’ll avoid the crowded and often chaotic stores once a hurricane watch is issued.

As you prepare you should stock these basics for your home: water, food, first aid supplies, clothing and bedding, and special items like medicines and pet food. In case of an evacuation, keep the items you would most likely need in an easy-to-carry container like storage bins, a camping backpack, or a duffle bag.

water

tools & supplies

Store water in plastic containers such as soft drink bottles. Avoid using containers that will decompose or break, such as milk cartons or glass bottles.

Typically, people need at least two quarts of water each day. Hot environments and intense physical activity can double that amount. Children, nursing mothers, and those suffering from illness will need more. Store one gallon of water per person per day.

Keep at least a three day supply of water per person.

Before hurricane Harvey, things like a signal flair and plastic sheeting might have seemed a little extreme but after seeing people trapped on their roofs for days, nothing is overkill. Make sure you have a battery-operated radio, flashlights and extra batteries. Also having some cash or traveler’s checks on hand in case credit card machines are down in the aftermath can be a good idea. Items like a nonelectric can opener, utility knife, pliers, tape, and matches in a waterproof container can all come in handy. Also consider adding more “intense” items like a signal flare, whistle, and plastic sheeting to your supply list.

food At minimum, store a three-day supply of nonperishable food. Select foods that don’t require refrigeration, preparation or cooking, and little or no water like ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, and vegetables. Also have canned juices, staples (salt, sugar, spices, etc.), protein bars, and vitamins on hand.

sanitation, clothing & bedding Whether you are evacuating or staying through the storm, make sure you have these important items on hand. With Irma’s approach, 6.3 million people were ordered to evacuate and many found stores along the way and at major evacuation destinations were out of staple items due to the sudden influx of people. Stock up on things like toilet paper, towelettes, and soap.

first aid & special items While you can assemble your own kit, your can also purchase one online. This is usually cheaper and always easier. If you do want to make your own, include items like adhesive bandages, sterile dressing and gauze pads, antibacterial hand wipes or hand sanitizer, nonlatex gloves, adhesive tape, anti-bacterial ointment, and cold packs. A complete list of items can be found at hurricanesafety.org.

Remember family members with special requirements, such as infants and the elderly. Formula and diapers will go fast as will prescription drugs so make sure you call your doctor at the first sign a hurricane might be heading your way if you are running low.

possessions & documents You never know how long it might take to return to your house if you need to evacuate so protect your valuables and by storing them in waterproof, portable containers and by taking them with you if you leave. While you can replace documents like wills, insurance policies, deeds, passports and social security cards, it’s better to take them with you in case there is trouble with looting after the storm.

Also take an inventory of valuable household goods and save family records (birth, marriage, death certificates) that might be more difficult to replace if they get damaged.

pets The pictures of pets left behind after hurricanes last year was heartbreaking. Please take your pets with you if you evacuate. Have current ID tags for every pet and securely fasten them to your pet’s collar and carry a recent photograph of your pet. Transport them in secure pet carriers and keep them on their leash or harness. Call hotels at the location you’re evacuating to—some hotels will lift their no-pet policy for disaster situations. If you can’t find a hotel, reach out to friends, family members, veterinarians or boarding kennels in the city you’ll be staying in to arrange foster care. Pack a week’s supply of food, water, medication, cat litter, etc. Do not wait until the last minute to evacuate. Rescue officials may not allow you to take your pets if you need to be rescued.

Kitchen Design for the Modern World MY VERY FIRST

job was working at my parent’s millwork shop. The aroma of wood being cut is still a very familiar and comforting one to me. With this family foundation, I began designing kitchens and baths when I was 13 years old and I never stopped. Over the years I’ve seen the industry change and grow firsthand. From the small space tucked away at the back the house to the open layouts we see prominently placed at the center of our home and lives, we no longer hide our kitchens. The walls have literally and figuratively been torn down. Now the kitchen is front and center in the home and has become the focal point—the center of activity.

Meal preparation is just one function of today’s kitchen. Americans live in their kitchens, even if they are not avid chefs! With so much attention placed on this one space, we have upped the “lux value” with stunning finishes, super high-tech appliances, enormous islands, and yes, even TVs have made their way into many modern kitchens.

The strongest trend today is the shift to a kitchen that looks less like a kitchen. This is accomplished through the introduction of integrated refrigerators, wine coolers, and dishwashers by high-end appliance manufacturers. Appliances now look like cabinets and some companies, such as Miele, completely disguise their products as cabinetry or

Lighting in your kitchen is vitally important. Not only the color and temperature but also the how the lighting is laid out so there are no shadows and dark zones as you move around the space. LED lighting also allows designers to add decorative options that really create a wow factor.

Consumers are also demanding more function in the kitchen. From barista-style coffee at the push of a button to perfectly prepared dinners in chef-inspired appliances, people expect more from their kitchen than ever before. I personally enjoy a 6:00 a.m. macchiato every morning compliments of my Miele coffee machine. I also love being able to steam fresh vegetables, bake crusty loaves of breads, and broil flaky fish in my combination steam and convection oven. I can even cook in sous-vide mode in the same

steam oven. My duel-fuel gas/electric range has two convection ovens but one is also a microwave—and there is a warming drawer.

When it comes to dinner preparations I have more options in my home kitchen than most chefs did a few years ago!

I’m also excited about the combination of design and technology. We are now combining technology not just with appliances, but also in cabinet finishes. New, digitally-printed cladding for cabinets allows us to design kitchens with very specific personalities.

Another major focus in our kitchen design is lighting: decorative and embedded. We use LED lighting in our designs because the sky is literally the limit here. We also love LED

lighting because we can make sure the color of the light is appropriate for the space.

While it seems the restrictions have been removed, manufacturers have listened to designers, and we are free to let our ideas soar. Note, there is one trend in kitchen design that should go away immediately: sparkles in countertops! There is a real danger in using a trendy design idea like sparkly flakes in the third most expensive purchase in a kitchen (after cabinets and appliances). I remind my clients that their countertops are a decision they may have to live with for 20 or more years!

designer. When I was younger, I was a creative designer but as I’ve matured, I have realized the immense value in explaining the design process to my residential clients. One of the best ways I do this is through handsketching their kitchen, showing them their options in real time. I became proficient in quick sketching because I like the connection between my client and myself. We sit at the same table and dream together. These sketches are sent our drafting department (it takes a village!), and once finish selections are made, they progress to our rendering department where we craft photo-real 3D images. This has changed everything.

It takes the edge off right away and allows us to move through the fun of the design process without tension. (LEFT) Inside, the home is open and breezy. Designer Daniel Kilgore of Soco Interiors chose light colors accented by pops of coral and dusty pink for the main areas of the home. The addition of dark wood finishes through accent pieces like side tables and the entertainment console complement the beams above and enhance the home’s West Indies feel while maintaining a coastal transitional look. Sparkle is added through the metals used in the light fixture above and the coffee table’s driftwood-inspired base. In the dining room, a long table sits under a beautiful vintage-style chandelier with swirling baubles and strings of glass beads in soft coral. The focal point in the dining room is the unique wall panel that brings texture and depth to the room.

This also enabled Stock to create a kitchen with windows.

“We’ve gotten away from kitchens against an outside wall with more and more kitchens placed at the center of the home. When you do that you lose that traditional kitchen window and we found people were excited about that simple yet familiar element,” says Hurley. Filled with ample storage, the shaker-style cabinets were designed with oversized drawers. The quartz counters provide a durable work surface. The large island in soft taupe has even more storage via panels that swing open behind the barstools.

From the drink station to the placement of the bathroom and closets, this room is so well-planned out and private,” explains Hurley. The closets were placed outside of the main bedroom area for more privacy so someone dressing early in the morning wouldn’t disturb their stillsleeping partner. From the dramatic chandelier to the soft white linens, this room is the perfect island escape.

Perfect for summer, easy grilled chicken street tacos and homemade guacamole are a healthy and delicious pairing ideal for a busy weeknight or a gathering with family and friends around the pool. Street tacos are smaller tacos, usually served on corn tortillas. Their small size makes it easier for a people on the go to enjoy a quick meal. Chicken thighs are a little more forgiving because they are naturally juicier, but you can use chicken breast if you prefer. Top tacos with sliced avocados or pair with guacamole, and you’re ready for an exciting and fresh meal!

GRILLED CHICKEN STREET TACOS

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

1. Make chicken marinade by combining all ingredients in a large ziplock bag. Add chicken thighs.

20-22 mini white corn tortillas, warmed or grilled

1½ tablespoons lime juice

2. Refrigerate for at least one hour or up to overnight.

3 garlic cloves, minced

3. Preheat grill over medium-hight heat. Oil the grill with canola oil or spray generously with cooking spray. Remove chicken from marinade and place on hot grill.

pico de gallo or salsa 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped

1½ tablespoon ancho chili powder or chipotle chili powder

fresh lime juice

2 teaspoons oregano

hot sauce (optional)

2 teaspoons paprika

sour cream (optional)

FOR THE MARINADE:

4 tablespoons orange juice

4. Cook 4-5 minutes on each side, flipping once (thickest part of the chicken should register at about 165 degrees).

5. Transfer to a plate and allow to rest for a few minutes before chopping into small pieces.

6. Layer two warmed mini corn tortillas. Top with chopped chicken, pico de gallo, and cilantro. Optional (but delicious) toppings include hot sauce, sour cream and avocado or guacamole. Spritz with a little lime juice and enjoy!

2 ounces vodka ¾ cup pomegranate juice 1 teaspoon honey

1 tablespoon fresh rosemary leaves and sprigs for garnish

1 bottle Moscato wine

pomegranate arils for garnish

zest of 2 lemons

1/ 2 cup lemon liqueur 1/4 cup granulated sugar

ice for shaking and serving,

1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

1 Granny Smith apple, cored, halved, and thinly sliced 1 Bartlett pear, cored, halved, and thinly sliced 1 can (12 ounces) seltzer

Pour pomegranate juice, honey, and rosemary into a shaker.

Muddle rosemary leaves against bottom of shaker and into juice, until they become fragrant. Add ice and vodka. Shake vigorously. Strain and serve. Garnish with a sprig of rosemary and fresh pomegranate arils.

In a large pitcher, combine wine, lemon liqueur, lemon zest, and sugar. Stir until sugar dissolves. Add lemon juice, apple and pear slices and mix well. Place pitcher in refrigerator for 4 hours to chill and allow flavors to blend. Just before serving, top sangria off with seltzer.
