C OA STA L C O T TAGE A NEW PROJECT FOR THE NEW NAPLES BUYER

T

he Leeside in Harbour Village is the first of three new coastal cottages by developer/designer Kristen Williams that sit on the corner of 10th Avenue South and 9th Street South. Located in the heart of it all, this home is just a quick walk or leisurely bike ride away from the sandy Gulf beaches and Naples Pier. The Leeside is also steps away from the shops, restaurants, and lifestyle of Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South. Built to suit the tastes of the discerning, modern Naples buyer, this home is expertly designed with four bedrooms, including two master suites, four bathrooms, and spacious first floor for quality living and entertaining. The home also offers a lush, private pool courtyard and outdoor kitchen that facilitates the relaxed indoor/ outdoor lifestyle so popular in Naples. Sold fully furnished, this four-bedroom, two-story home features the best of the best in materials and finishes. Williams was once again able to create a modern coastal cottage that reflects the wants and needs of buyers both in style and location. Gracious and welcoming with touches of sophisticated design throughout, this is the home perfect for creating lasting memories. Offered by Olde Naples Real Estate, the Leeside is listed for $3,500,000.

COURTYARD STYLE The home’s outdoor space is perfectly-sized for entertaining and relaxing by the pool. Coconut palms promote a breezy feel and provide shade for the seating areas around the pool. The private courtyard features an outdoor kitchen with gas grill. The pool with shimmering glass tiles is the perfect place to cool off and provides a beautiful focal point visible from all main rooms.

KITCHEN CONNECTION When you enter the home, the elegant kitchen is awash in light thanks to the bank of large southfacing windows. Here, the beautiful marble counter with plenty of prep space and top-of-the-line appliances by Lacanche, Sub-Zero, Bosch, and Wolf is the perfect place to launch a fabulous dinner party or whip up a quick lunch for a day at the beach. The elegant custom cabinetry offers plenty of storage options in addition to the large walk-in pantry found on the far side of the kitchen. Fun design details, like the unique nautical lighting sconces are sprinkled throughout the home.

MODERN DINING Moving past the kitchen, the dining room is casual yet elegant. The rustic, driftwood-inspired dining table lends itself to the coastal feel while the dramatic hostess chairs add a pop of high-end design to the space. Modern art ties in the palette of greens, creams, and black used throughout. Wide plank white oak wood floors provide a natural base for the interior spaces both upstairs and down.

8 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E

STYLISH LIVING In the living room, comfortable furniture is covered in linen, something Williams, who acts as interior designer on all her projects, loves to add to her Naples homes. The ornate patterns on the throw pillows elevate the natural texture of the linen creating a rich visual display. Highlights of green and black are enhanced by the light wood tones found in the accent pieces. High ceilings given a tongue and groove finish also elevate the space.

INSIDE OUT The Leeside features two possible master suites. The first floor master is accessed through a clever patio area that can be completely closed off to the elements during inclement weather and features its own air conditioning zone. The beautiful seating space also features a gas fireplace and entertainment center.

10 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E

SUITE OPTIONS Currently shown as a flex space, the downstairs master is the perfect place for an in-home gym. With views of the courtyard, this is the ideal spot to break a sweat before you hit the pool to cool down. There is also a spa-like bathroom attached so you don’t have to leave your personal gym to shower off after a good workout session.

SOARING HEIGHTS Upstairs, the dramatic vaulted ceilings give the second story an open and spacious feel. On the landing, the large chandelier and the traditional rocking chairs offset another piece of modern art that brings in the peaceful blues used in the master bedroom beyond.

YOUR HOME MAG AZ INE | 11

SWEET DREAMS Elegant and serene, the master bedroom’s tall ceilings add light and grandeur to the room. Using blue and light grey as the main colors, Williams was created a master retreat that both relaxes and inspires. At the end of the bed, a comfortable bench with nailhead details provides a comfortable seating area. The room is kept more contemporary through the use of low ottomans with a mid-century vibe and a modern end table.

BATHROOM BLUES The relaxing tones found in the master bedroom are carried into the spa-like oasis of the master bath. From the art to the counters, airy blues elevate this comfortable bathroom. The large soaking tub and oversized shower are the perfect place to wash the sand away after a day at the beach.

12 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E

CITRUS POP Besides the upstairs master, two oversized guest rooms can be found on the second floor, each with their own en-suite bath. Colorful and fun, this guest room’s palette takes its cue from the colors of the sunset on the Gulf, located just blocks away.

COLORFUL CONNECTION INFUSING YOUR LANAI WITH COLOR AND STYLE THIS SUMMER | BY CLAUDIA LEAH

P

LAYING IT SAFE

with your outdoor space is so last season. Now is the time to add a little bit of the unexpected to your lanai and pool area. For many, neutral tones are appealing, but for people looking for a little pop, color is back—especially outside. This area should feel like a relaxing resort in your own backyard and some of the most iconic and historic hotels can be found in West Palm Beach and Miami. Why not bring a little bit of that iconic Florida aesthetic to your home? Here are a few tips to help you incorporate fun colors and great outdoor items into your current lanai space. Treat your outside spaces like you would your inside rooms. Rugs, lighting, furniture, accessories, and art can all be used to create a comfortable outdoor experience. Remember that quality is important here in Southwest Florida, so as you are purchasing your outdoor items pay attention to what you’re actually getting. You don’t want your colors to fade quickly or fight mildew by the end of the summer; quality items will also make

14 | YOU R HOME M AGAZIN E

clean up and maintenance easier. Choose pieces with some character whether you are going with wicker, metal, or rattan. Chairs with interesting shapes, table legs with some flair, or chaise lounges with carved or molded details make your lanai feel more intentional and polished. When adding color, blue isn’t the only option! While it’s a wonderful color that dominates the outdoor design world here, if you like orange or red or green or any of the other fantastic color choices, use those that excite you the most. If selecting coordinating colors is a little daunting, a professional can help. You deserve an outdoor space based on your personality and tastes, not just current design trends. When I chose to redo my own family’s lanai, I decided to use blue as the base tone and then accented with a good amount of flamingo pink and white. The blue I used has a brighter quality to it which, when paired with pink, gives the lanai a retro vibe that reminds me of the glamorous days when West Palm Beach was filled with the socialites who shaped the design we’ve come to associate with Florida. Pro tip—simple things, like fun pool toys with big personalities or decorative

umbrellas, are a great way to spice up your lanai and reinforce your color palette. Storage outside is sometimes overlooked during the design process. From pool toys to potting tools, there are certain items you need to have handy. Look for dual purpose items like benches or ottomans with concealed storage space. There are also small, decorative sheds that are the size of a closet which are easy to assemble, and great for larger items like pool noodles and floats. Your storage options should also make entertaining on your lanai more convenient. I chose to use accent tables with hidden ice buckets. They have plenty of room for wine and champagne bottles, which means I don’t have to leave my chair or the party to pour another glass. You wouldn’t stop at colors and furniture inside your home, so make sure you finish your lanai with accessories, plants, and lighting. One great way to create a cohesive lanai is through accessories and drapes. They can hide less than desirable architectural details and offer privacy. I also think lighting is particularly important—who wants to sit on a dark lanai? When building a home, make

sure you pay attention to where the lighting is placed in the floorplan. Seating areas and your outdoor kitchen/grill should be illuminated for use throughout the night. You don’t want to burn the steaks because you can’t see them! If unsatisfied with your home’s lighting situation, there are clever alternatives. Decorative bistro lights can be hung over a dining or seating area and LED lanterns or pendant lights (plug-in options are now available) can be used as well. There are also ultra modern lighting spheres which can be placed around your lanai and even in the pool for a subtle glow. If you want a more permanent option, you can always hire an electrician to create junction boxes in your ceilings or reposition wall plugs. If you need suggestions, just ask, I’d love to help you decide where to place your new lights and recommend someone I trust to help you do the work. Also, make sure you have a fan or two for good air circulation. Remember to hang them at an appropriate height, especially if you have a tall lanai. Sometimes fans are hung too high—you want the air to circulate around you and not just in the ceiling. These are just a few ways you can spruce up and enliven your outdoor space!

outdoor entertaining THR OW A GREAT SUMMER SOI RÉE

Shaded lanais and inviting pools mean the outdoor fun never has to stop here in Southwest Florida. As kids get out of school and the slower season begins, summer is a great time to connect with family and friends. Outdoor gatherings are often casual and can be very versatile, so don’t feel obligated to prepare a full dinner each time you throw a party. A few snacks, a couple drink options, and some good friends are enough to create memories. Here are a few tips to help you plan a fun, easy summer party. 18 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E

keep food simple and seasonal

The last thing you want to do is stress about a full meal, so choose options that are light, simple, and seasonal. A theme can provide a helpful launching point for your party if you want to host something a little more structured. For an outdoor movie night, popcorn, soda, and a little something sweet like s’mores are perfect. A menu for a fun dinner party for your gal pals can be built around a delicious cocktail or two. Family and friends over for a grill out might enjoy “make your own” style food where people can build personal pizzas, burgers, or meat and veggie skewers. No matter what you choose to do with food and drink, buying pre-chopped ingredients will be a huge help on the day of the party. A casual outdoor party is also a great time to accept help—make it a potluck and either assign dishes or let people know the theme so they have some direction. If you want to get high-tech about it, create a text group or cloud-based spreadsheet where guests can write down what they are bringing so you avoid duplicate dishes.

Fresh fruit is an easy summer snack. You can even create “fruit pops” by inserting popsicle sticks into watermelon slices and then freezing them before the party.

weather-friendly snacks

When it comes to snacks and appetizers, food that’s unaffected by heat is a great way to cut down on both mental and physical party preparations. Nuts, popcorn, and chips provide salty sustenance throughout the party and thankfully don’t require refrigeration.

Create defined seating areas for you and your guests. This facilitates conversation and creates attractive outdoor areas. Treat your outside space like the inside of your home and use rugs and drapes to dress up your patio or deck. You can also bring indoor furniture out if you find you need more seating options the day of the party.

YOUR HOME MAG AZ INE | 19

keep cleanup easy With so many great outdoor furniture options to choose from, you can curate the perfect party space. Modern pieces make your lanai feel like an inviting and comfortable extension of the home.

20 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E

Craft paper makes an attractive and easy base for both your serving and dining tables. You can use a marker to label the paper above or below each dish so people know what you’re serving. At the end of the night, the paper can be recycled along with paper straws and plates. Another way to shorten cleanup time is to serve food in the trays they come in, so resist the temptation to pull out all your platters.

seating selections

Now that you have the food under control, it’s time to make sure your guests have a place to enjoy their snacks. While people will naturally take turns sitting and standing throughout the party, no one should have to stand because there isn’t room. If you find you don’t have enough

chairs, ask people to bring their own or make picnic-inspired seating areas with blankets and cushions. Consider repurposing indoor items for a few hours to help you create enough room for everyone to kick back and relax. When setting up these different spaces, think about height. You don’t want people sitting on chairs next to people on picnic blankets if you can help it. That doesn’t facilitate the best conversation opportunities as one looks down and the other cranes their neck.

game time

Lawn and water games are a fun way to get everyone involved. For lawn games, put them in the shade and make sure they are close enough to each other so people can talk as they play. If people will be in the pool, put floats, noodles, and pool games in an easily accessible place. If your group is competitive, consider giving out fun prizes to the winners.

beat the bugs

Unfortunately, we do have to worry about the bugs in Southwest Florida and they can put a damper on the festivities. Consider placing a few bottles of bug spray in a basket so everyone can use them as needed. There are plenty of options that will protect the air around your party. If classic citronella candles don’t appeal to you, something like a Patio Shield Repeller (available at target.com) is a great way to keep bugs away from tables and seating areas.

For a more formal outdoor party, dress up your casual tables with runners, lighting, and plants. You can also use craft or butcher paper to make cleanup easier. Give guests the option to customize their food. You can create a burger or pizza bar, or set out meat and veggies and let people make their own skewers. Everything tastes better on the grill! MAKER PROFILE

PAPER & CLAY

T

HE TREND TO SUPPORT small businesses has become mainstream. From food to clothing, we should support small or local businesses whenever possible. As a small business here at Your Home, we enjoy highlighting creative people with small companies. One such company is Paper & Clay, located in Memphis, Tennessee. Beginning with the desire to bring beautiful design to everyday objects, Brit McDaniel had an original passion for making books (the Paper of Paper &

22 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E

Clay), but decided to channel her creative concentration on functional ceramics which she designs and crafts herself. “I draw inspiration from my love of Scandinavian modernism— simple, warm, purposeful objects grounded in natural forms and colors. Each piece is made by hand with careful attention to detail, and each glaze has been carefully developed from scratch to create subtle and unique colors that mix and match harmoniously.” As a business owner, she is committed to sourcing as much material

locally as possible. And if she can’t find it close to home, she has decided to find other options within the United States. Skirting the temptation to grow too quickly, McDaniel has a long term goal in mind. “I’m committed to growing Paper & Clay slowly and sustainably in order to build a lasting brand that is committed to quality handmade ceramic wares.” Her beautiful creations bring a little joy into any home or office and can be purchased on her website, shoppaperandclay.com.

WHY SHOP SMALL 1 If you want to shop at small businesses, but aren’t sure if your dollars are really making an impact, here are five reasons why it matters.

Shopping at small businesses shows a level of respect for the community the business is in, as well as the work of talented people. There are risks to starting your own business and entrepreneurship fuels the American economy. Supporting small companies encourages other people make their dreams a reality while you find one-of-a-kind options for your family and home.

Customer service is better. Small business owners are more likely to value each individual relationship because they rely on regular customers for profit and to help spread the word about their company.

It can be difficult for small businesses to stay relevant, so they work harder to add new products and benefits for their customers. This sparks healthy competition with larger companies and encourages innovation.

4

Small businesses support the community they are a part of. Even when shopping online, your dollars go to someone who has a direct impact on their neighborhood and the people around them in a way the big box stores don’t.

5

Many small businesses source their supplies from other small companies and many are concerned about the impact they, and the companies they use, have on the environment. Supporting small business is an easy way to add more sustainable practices into your own life and sends a message to larger companies through your dollars.

SUNSET INSPIRATION known for serene

palettes and neutraltoned spaces, Laurie Walter and Diana Hall of Cinnabar Design decided to showcase a different side to their design prowess with this model at Altaira, a luxury highrise within The Colony Golf & Country Club. Taking inspiration from the vibrant sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico, Walter and Hall created a transitional home with accents of tangerine that energize this spacious

26 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E

condo. “Our goal was to make the home contemporary without going over the top with modern elements,” explains Walter. “There are so many special features, but we wanted them to be subtle and flow with the interior of the home.” They also like to create homes that feel comfortable, not just showrooms. “We always envision life in each particular space we design. We want to create timeless and livable homes, not just a staged collection of rooms,” Hall says.

SEATING SOLUTIONS

CHIT CHAT “We call the secondary seating zone the ‘chat area’,” says Hall. Elegant armchairs from Vanguard sport a traditional shape and are given a contemporary twist with the vibrant citrus orange fabric. Accompanying the chairs are sleek, stone-topped tables, and hide rug. The oil-rubbed bronze tables with travertine tops are from Michael Weiss. This seating area is the first thing seen when entering the home so the color and arrangement was selected to create the maximum visual impact. Throughout the home, French oak floors in a truffle color adds a warm and comfortable feel.

The great room is divided into two areas via a comfortable circular sofa from Vanguard. The sofa was chosen because of the scale of the room. “It’s a large, open space so if we had used a traditional straight sofa or sectional, it would have created a gap that would have felt like an unfinished hole,” says Walter. The elegant curves of the sofa also soften the space while providing enough seating for the gathering area. The floating backlit panel across from the sofa was a clever way to create a memorable design element and break up the large TV wall. A curved bookcase by Vanguard perfectly complements the space. The beautiful window treatments with woven and gossamer textures tie the different great room zones together.

DINING DREAMS The dining room’s custom drop ceiling is both practical and decorative. “We quickly realized the lighting box wasn’t centered which meant the table couldn’t be centered. That’s not the look we were going for in this room! Our solution was to create this beautiful drop ceiling that matched the wood floors. This created more texture and visual interest while also fixing an issue that could have affected the whole look of the room,” says Hall. The plaid fabric of the banquette seating matches the citrus hues of the kitchen while the art was chosen to add blue and grey to the room. Over the glass-topped table, the onyx-like chandelier is actually made from resin.

28 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E

COLORFUL KITCHEN In the well-appointed kitchen, the cheery mandarin shade adds a visual punch to the space. Walter explains, “We decided to make color the focal point of the kitchen; it stands alone as the conversation piece in the room. Other items, like the designer-ready backsplash and the counters are more subtle and complement the space without taking too much attention away from the color of the room.” The beautiful barstools with sleek metal frames and vibrant fabric perfectly accent the feel of the mid-century inspired lighting pendants.

SERENE SLEEP The serene palette used in the master bedroom creates the relaxing space Walter and Hall are eager to capture for all their clients. “We feel the master retreat should be just that, a comfortable retreat. We love to use calming colors and textures in these important rooms,” Walter explains. The custom Vanguard nightstands with mirrored top are accented with unique, geometric lamps. The headboard wall has been painted in a soft shade that draws the eye and the chaise lounge was added to create a reading area.

ORGANIC ORANGE Light and bright with a bold pop of color that energizes the room, this fantastic home office is the perfect place to read and work. Near the window with a custom valance, a seating area has been placed on a wool rug with organic colors and abstract patterns, perfect for this transitional space. The hammered silver rain drum table is both practical and elegant. Across the room, the modern desk sports sleek dark wood with metal inlay and base. The art on the wall behind actually served as the inspiration for the room and are two of Walter and Hall’s favorite items in the home.

FLOATING FLORALS The custom floating cabinet in the powder bath is the focal point in this small, but beautiful space. The walls feature new coverings that Walter and Hall were excited to incorporate into the bathroom. With a modern take on florals, the bronze, silver, and metallic pewter of the wall coverings perfectly fit the natural porcelain tiles while applied trim adds a special touch.

CITRUS SITES The kiwi color of this guest bedroom is the perfect complement to the bright colors in the main living areas of the home. The chequed, geometric pattern of the upholstered built-in headboard wall matches the custom-built sandbox bed. The bed is flanked by linen covered nightstands with nailhead details. Above, the modern light fixture is comprised of individual lighting cups creating an intriguing design.

orange lime margarita 1½ ounces freshly squeezed orange juice ¾ ounce freshly squeezed lime juice ½ ounce Cointreau or triple sec 1½ ounces tequila ½ to 1 tsp. agave nectar to taste Garnish of lime wedge or fresh herbs

36 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E

Combine orange juice, lime juice, orange liqueur, tequila, and agave nectar (if sweetness desired) in a cocktail shaker, and fill with ice. Shake until cold and then strain over ice into glass. Garnish with a lime wedge and fresh herb like rosemary or mint.

grapefuit jalepeño cocktail 11/2 ounces Svedka Grapefruit & Jalapeño Vodka 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice 2 ounces fresh grapefruit juice Splash club soda 1/2 ounce simple syrup (optional) Jalapeño and grapefruit slices for garnish

Combine Svedka Grapefruit & Jalapeño Vodka, freshly squeezed lime and grapefruit juices, club soda, and simple syrup (if a sweeter drink is preferred) in a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake vigorously then strain into a glass with or without crushed ice as desired. Garnish with grapefruit and jalapeño slices and enjoy.

iced coffee with cream 1/2 cup sugar 1 cup water 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup coffee (room temperature or chilled) 2 tbsp. half and half or creamer of choice

This recipe allows the simple syrup to be prepped, stored and ready to use. Your coffee is based on preference; you can brew it traditionally to substitute the coffee with espresso—it’s up to you! To make simple syrup, combine sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring gently until the sugar has dissolved. Let syrup cool completely and add in vanilla extract. Store in fridge and use as needed. Serve coffee over ice with half and half and simple syrup, to taste.
