TIMELESS TRAVELS A GLOBALLY INSPIRED MARCO RETREAT TUCKED AWAY ON Marco Island, this elegant condo project by Claudia Leah of Claudia Leah Design is a testament to slow, thoughtful design. Completed over a three year period due to the owners’ busy schedule and the condo’s restrictive renovation calendar, Leah was able to create a home that functions on two levels. First, as a family home for the owners, their children, and nine grandchildren; and second, as a business retreat for colleagues and potential clients from around the world. “While this project took some time to complete, we were able to make a home that feels cohesive thanks to long term planning with the end goal in mind,” says Leah. Her master plan allowed for a clear path through the multi-room remodel based on the client’s needs and lifestyle. “When you work on a home over multiple seasons, you must think about the impact each decision will have over a much longer time frame. Projects can snowball, and you can end up repeatedly dealing with dust from tile or drywall removal, or you move furniture over and over again when you don’t create a long term vision.” This property was featured on the program, Out & About. The living area of the home reflects the owners’ love of West Indies design. Dark wood is mixed with light fabrics, natural textures, warm colors, and elegant fixtures. On the far wall, Leah wanted to create structure and detail to balance the room and add a focal point. Her solution was to put a chair rail below three panels of grasscloth trimmed with moldings. The finished look is both textural and cohesive with the overall theme. The art was chosen to tie in the colors of the room and the technique used to paint the fish makes them look three dimensional. “It’s like they have their own little aquarium without the work,” Leah says. The owners’ professional interests often take them to China and India,

so they also wanted their Marco home to be a nod to that part of the world. Leah used bamboo, ceramics, and the Koi pattern in the drapery to reflect these regions. Because the home hosts both family and business guests, only important or sentimental personal belongings are used in the home. The focus here is on comfortable, durable living, rather than filling spaces with simple items. The tight back sofas are upholstered in a crisp white performance fabric that cleans like a dream. “I got a call about a purple marker incident,” laughs Leah. “An unnamed grandchild had drawn on one of the cushions but I was able

to tell them to simply take a little dish soap and warm water and wipe it away. They were shocked by how well it worked and the cushion was a good as new!” The sofas were also chosen because they were tailored without being too formal, a perfect fit for the design of the home. Other durable yet beautiful items like the faux leather-topped ottoman and the only look alike natural fiber rug are easy to clean, especially if any of the avid wine drinkers were to spill a glass. To finish the space, Leah added more lighting through sconces and the f loor lights in the corner of the room.

GATHERING SPACE

The old dining room has been transformed from a dark, uninviting box to a beautiful entertaining space. Placed just off the great room, the blue walls and white trim add an elegant contrast to the colors found there. Leah used the soft color as a backdrop for the dark case goods and chair rail, which mirrors the one in the main living area. “I am finding people are more and more interested in adding color to their spaces. For a while it just felt like a scary suggestion when I would offer it as an option, but now there is a real willingness from my clients to embrace color,” explains Leah. A glass top table maintains the room’s openness by not blocking sight lines and sits upon a woven, natural fiber rug. She also installed more lighting to create a warm and welcoming ambiance.

The eye is immediately drawn to the mother of pearl and marble backsplash of the redone wet bar. The space provides plenty of storage areas for glasses and bottles and the glass front cabinets are the perfect place to showcase the ownersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; glass collection from Milan.

KID-FRIENDLY DESIGN

The den is now the perfect space for the couple’s grandchildren. The large sectional brings in the much loved navy blue, while creating room for movie nights and nap times. The sectional’s performance fabric means easy cleanup in this kid-friendly room, and it can also be unfolded to create a queen sleeper for overf low guests. The ottoman was placed on wheels for easy mobility across the muted area rug. “Working with a professional has its perks,” says Leah. “People tend to forget about things like halls, stairs, and elevators when ordering furniture, they simply measure the room and get what fits. Because I’ve worked on other condo projects, I measured the elevator and then, after searching through countless vendors, chose the largest possible sectional based on what we could actually get into the condo. That saved the owners time and money—no returned furniture with this project!” Throughout the home, Leah has artfully woven dark case goods with lighter walls and f looring to create a perfect blend of of formal pieces and casual appeal. “I loved working with this couple because it really was a collaboration. They were very eager to take my suggestions and brought their own great design ideas to the project,” Leah says. For example, the stately poster bed was something the owners really wanted in their bedroom while Leah pushed for the grasscloth accent wall to introduce a natural element. Together they create a fantastic merging of textures that feels authentic to the rest of the design found throughout the home. On the f loor, the custom rug trimmed with leather, sports a similar pattern to the drapes with inverse colors. Dark furniture looks beautiful against the newly redone woodlook tile f loors. According to Leah, the location of the home was an important factor as she worked on the project. “Throughout the home we wanted to bring in the colors of the sand and sea. The condo’s beautiful view was such an inspiration to the BEFORE design process.”

The large outdoor living area is protected by glass sliders creating a sunroom. When the sliders are closed, the door leading to the main interior can be opened creating more air conditioned space which greatly adds to the square footage of the home. When the weather is nice, the sliders can be opened to let in the Gulf breeze. Motorized solar shades keep the heat and damaging UV rays out of the home while leaving the view unobstructed which is a total game changer for homes along the coast. The shade and slider combination means the furniture is protected and Leah was able to put in dark wood pieces that complement the interior of the home without fear of damage or fading. This modern indoor/outdoor space also features a new kitchen area with better ventilation and counter space. At the end of it all, Leah is glad she had the extra time to complete this project. “While it may not seem ideal, working on a project over a longer period of time actually gives you opportunities to really pinpoint areas that aren’t working for the homeowner and they have a chance to really see how they live in the space. Instead of making informed guesses, I was able to really work with the layout and their lifestyle needs to create a home that works for this amazing couple.”

Here we take a look at some new tech that will cover your home inside and out. From amazing kitchen appliances and accessories that will help you create gourmet meals, to outdoor items that illuminate, protect, and entertain, this is our list of the best in new home technology.

A relative newcomer to the security world, Vivint Smart Home has shot to the top as one of the best and most recommended smart home securities on the market. Do-it-yourself smart home security systems are great for frugal homeowners, but these systems don’t take action when an alarm is triggered. It’s up to you to check in when your smoke alarm goes off or the front door alarm is tripped. If you are looking for an automated home security system, then you would want to choose a subscription-based service like the one that comes with the Vivint. If you don’t need comprehensive home monitoring and are simply interested in protecting your home from porch pirates, the Ring Video Doorbell and the Nest Hello Doorbell are still your best options. Ring now offers four video doorbells: Video Doorbell, Video Doorbell 2, Video Doorbell Pro and Video Doorbell Elite. They all allow you to see, speak, and hear people at your front door and Ring’s doorbells are compatible with most smartphones, PCs, and tablets. All of the above options, except the Video Doorbell Elite, can be self-installed. Since they are available in both hard-wired and battery-operated versions, Ring Doorbells work for any home. They are also durable and certified for outdoor use in temperatures from -5 to 120 degrees. The one major drawback with the battery-powered doorbells is their short battery life. Ring claims they average 12 months of battery life. However, tests done by safehome.org show they only offer about two months of battery performance. The Nest Hello Video Doorbell lets you see who is at your door day or night. Compatible with Google Home Mini, the device can announce when someone is at your front door. The image quality is crisp and bright thanks to HD video and night vision. Since it continually streams video to the cloud 24/7, you can check in anytime. Nest also features a three hour snapshot. While it is easy-to-install and use, the Nest requires a hard-wired connection so it’s not ideal for customers who need a batteryoperated doorbell.

KITCHEN The kitchen is a space where technology and flavor meet to create the perfect pairing. While some kitchen tech can seem a little superfluous, there are great advances that can make your life a little easier. There are three things I really want people to know about modern window coverings. First, form and function now go hand in hand, especially in the world of custom work. There are parts of the country where your window coverings are mainly there for looks but here in Southwest Florida itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a necessity. We spend a lot of money to have large, plentiful windows, but we need to cover them to control UV rays and heat which protects our interiors and creates a more energy efficient home. All those windows also bring privacy concerns, so window coverings serve a range of important services. Second, they are also a fashion statement. available, your window coverings should never distract from or clash with the interior design of your home. Third, they are now more user-friendly than ever before. Solar shades are a good option for the main living spaces in your home as they block UV rays and reduce heat by 90%. WE HAVE A LOT OF LARGE SLIDING DOORS IN OUR SOUTHWEST FLORIDA HOMES. WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO COVER THOSE? Roll shades are one of the best options and they can be motorized or manually operated. With many fabrics we can create something that’s 158 inches wide so we are able to cover large areas. I personally love a lot of the Hunter Douglas products for style, ease of use, and longevity. Sliding plantation shutters are great for bedrooms and I would also suggest motorized drapes for these large sliding doors, since they bring style and versatility. Sliding panels are also a sleek and modern way to cover these bigger areas.

WHAT WILL BE BIG IN 2020 AND WILL THERE BE A CHANGE IN TASTES AND TRENDS NEXT YEAR? Nationally, there is a trend towards a more modern and industrial look; however, here in Naples we will still be seeing the much loved look of coastal chic with a transitional flair as represented by designer, Laurie Walter. She is a great example of a designer who brings in the sand, water, and colors of the sky while keeping window treatments neutral to highlight original artwork and

furnishings. While there is a range of new colors trends on the market, blue will continue to hold strong here. We are seeing more navy blue used in homes here and we are having fun as we work with designers who bring in the oranges and yellows of the sunset. Technology will continue to develop in in 2020, and we are excited to see what new products are rolled out for our clients as the year progresses.

condominium in Bonita Bay’s Altaira, you are immediately struck by a sense of subtle sophistication that is cohesive and fresh as you move from room to room. This inspired sense of style comes from former Principal of Cinnabar Design, Diana Hall and senior designer, Elizabeth Manchego who are now pleased to announce their latest venture, Diana Hall Design. Built as a spec unit for WCI and Lennar, a lot of features were already in the unit when Hall and Manchego were brought into the project. “It quickly became about finding ways to integrate what we do, which is lighter and more transitional, with the finishes that were already in place, like the traditional dark wood floors and granite countertops. We decided on a palette that enhanced the warm, golden tones already there, while bringing in a touch of glamour people have come to expect in these beautiful beach and bay front high rises,” says Hall.

The decision to use gold, champagne, and oiled bronze throughout the home softens the dark wood floors and continues Hall’s signature theme of understated elegance. A challenge she faced was finding a way to utilize the three large niches added by the builder. In the dining area, she decided to create a beautiful bank of seating nestled into the first of the three niches. This comfortable bench with faux bois fabric makes an impressive statement piece as well as functional seating area. Above, the architectural ceiling detail not only delineates the space, it also serves a function, hiding an awkwardly placed j-box which allowed Hall to center the beautiful chandelier. The table is surrounded by chairs finished in a Chanel-like quilted pattern and the champagne colored table base mimics the “X” pattern found in the lighting details. Accent pillows with marble swirls finish the bench.

In the living area, the second niche wall, originally designed for an entertainment center, has been given and fabulous upgrade. Hall had a solution to the less than ideal placement of the niche saying “If we were to use the whole space for a media stand or built-ins for an entertainment center, it put the TV too close to the sliding doors. By placing this wonderful media piece to one side and the filling in the open space with floating shelves, we were able to create an area that is modern, balanced, and now functions as a great entertainment area.” Tone on tone applied molding accents create the perfect finishing touch behind the Century media stand with soft grey doors, architectural gold hardware, and a cement top.

Elegant Comfort From a different angle, the expansive bend seat sectional provides a comfortable place to relax. The cut velvet pillows and panel drapes soften the mixed media cocktail table by Vanguard. Hall brought in interesting lighting like the asymmetrical chandelier and the lamp with crystal-like base from Flo Decor. Across the room, the breakfast nook and kitchen have been given the same level of sophisticated design through artwork which features cut geodes and the soft gold of the trey ceiling.

Color Study The den features a great desk space and a sleeper sofa, making it the perfect multi-purpose room. Hall used a natural sisal area rug which contrasts with the more luxurious touches like the faux stump finished in gold leaf. In fact, the whole room is awash in subtle gold and oil rubbed bronze tones, creating a space to relax or work with a backdrop of glamorous undertones. Sheer drapes with a horizontal pattern complement the greek key-patterned throw pillows. The whole room is tied together with the abstract gold painted rope art from the Phillips Collection.

Relaxing Design The bed is a modern take on a familiar four poster frame and is the perfect transitional option for this calming master bedroom. A pair of Stanley night stands with chocolate shagreen finish and industrial style handles and drawer pulls frame either side of the bed. Near the window, the Pearson chaise is an ideal spot to read a favorite book. Natural linen drapes are given a fun twist thanks to the thin gold threads woven throughout. Hall finished the space with lamps containing floating orb details in the center, and bedding by Eastern Accents.

Thinking Cap A versatile desk area was created from the third niche. “Since we had already filled the other two niches with furniture, I wanted to design something different here. The chocolate colored floating shelf can act as a storage or desk area and balances the other two niche spaces in the home,” Hall explains. She added extra seating options via the three ottomans below the shelf which can be pulled into the room for more seating when guests visit. easy as pie While Southwest Florida may not have a traditional autumn, we can certainly still enjoy the seasonal joys of baking. Nothing says fall quite like a delicious, homemade pie. One way to blend the comforting feeling of the season with the warm Florida climate is to create pies and tarts with vibrant and refreshing fruits and fillings. Here are a few favorites to try!

strawberry rhubarb pie 2 pie crusts ( see pg. 40) 4 cups chopped rhubarb 2 cups chopped strawberries ¾ cup granulated sugar, plus more for sprinkling 1/4 cup cornstarch

1 tbsp. lemon juice plus 1 tsp. zest pinch kosher salt 2 tbsp. cold butter, chopped 1 large egg, beaten vanilla ice cream, for serving

Preheat oven to 375°F. Using a rolling pin, roll out both pie crusts to about 16” across. In a large bowl, mix together rhubarb, strawberries, sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, zest, and salt until mixture begins to look juicy. Place one crust into a pie dish and pour in fruit mixture. Dot with pieces of butter. With the other sheet of pie dough, make a lattice top. First, cut the dough into ¾ inch strips. Then, weave strips over and under each other in a criss-cross formation. Using kitchen shears, trim the top and bottom crust so there’s a 1 inch overhang, then fold under and crimp edges together. Brush crust with egg wash and sprinkle with sugar. Bake until pie is golden and filling is bubbling, about 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes. If crust is browning too fast, cover with aluminum foil. Let pie cool slightly, and serve with vanilla ice cream if desired.

citrus cream tartlets Crust: 1 cup chopped macadamia nuts, toasted 6 tbsp. sugar 4 tbsp. all-purpose flour 4 tbsp. cold butter Filling: 12 oz. cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar

4 tsp. each orange, lemon and lime juice 2 tsp. each grated orange, lemon and lime peel Garnish (optional): oranges or tangerines, sliced 1 cup blackberries rosemary sprigs

Preheat oven to 350°F. In a food processor, combine the nuts, sugar and flour; cover and process until blended. Add butter and blend until mixture forms coarse crumbs. Press onto the bottom and up the sides of four greased 4-in. tartlet pans with removable bottoms. Bake for 13-15 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely. In a small bowl, beat cream cheese until fluffy. Add the confectioners’ sugar, citrus juices and peels; beat until blended. Spoon into crusts. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. tart A filling over a crust base with an open top not covered with pastry, but with fruit or garnish instead. Tart pans generally have a removable bottom so they can be served freestanding.

creating the perfect pie crust 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, cut into 1/2” pieces 11/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for surface 1 tbsp. granulated sugar 1/4 tsp. kosher salt 1/2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar 4 tbsp. ice water (or more, if needed)

Place butter and flour into freezer for 30 minutes before starting crust process. (You want them VERY cold.) In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, and salt. (Or you can use a food processor.) Add butter and, using your hands, mix together until pea-sized and slightly larger pieces form. Add vinegar and then ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until dough starts to come together and is moist but not wet and sticky (test by squeezing some with your fingers). Mixture should be crumbly. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and form into a ball. Flatten into a disk (making sure there are no/ minimal cracks). Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until dough is very cold, at least 2 hours or up to overnight before pressing into pie plate and baking. (If making a top crust or for lattice work, this recipe doubles easily.)

tips: • Apple cider vinegar will prevent the rise of gluten, which can create a tougher crust. • Mixing with your hands (rather than food processor) will ensure control over the dough. • Keeping the butter and water as cold as possible makes for a flakier crust! 40 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E®

2 cups lightly toasted hazelnuts

3/4 cup full fat coconut milk

1/2 cup cacao powder or unsweetened cocoa powder

8 ounces bittersweet chocolate

1/4 tsp. salt

pinch of salt

3 tbsp. maple syrup 1 tbsp. coconut oil, melted

1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Garnish: 3/4 pound fresh cherries, pitted and halved

To make the crust, lightly grease one 9 inch tart pan with coconut oil or for mini tarts 6 small tart pans. Process hazelnuts, cacao powder, and salt in a food processor until resembles a coarse flour. Add maple syrup and melted coconut oil and pulse until well incorporated. Press mixture into tart pan(s) with removable bottom(s). Set aside. To make the filling, coarsely chop chocolate and place in a large glass bowl. Bring coconut milk to a gentle simmer in a small saucepan and pour over chopped chocolate. Wait one minute, add vanilla extract and pinch of salt, and then stir mixture until creamy and smooth with chocolate fully melted in and incorporated. Pour mixture evenly into prepared tart crust(s). Place tarts in fridge to set for at least 2 hours. Arrange fresh cherries over top just before serving. Enjoy! Store in fridge, tightly covered.

1/2 pint raspberries 3 tbsp. granulated sugar 1 large egg yolk whisked with 1 tsp. water, for egg wash 1 tbsp. sparkling sugar

For the dough: Put the flour and salt in a food processor and pulse to blend. Add half the butter and pulse just until the fat is evenly distributed and coated with flour. Add the remaining butter and pulse a few times, just until it is coated with flour. There should still be pieces of flour-coated butter. Transfer the mixture to a bowl. Drizzle in the ice water while tossing with a fork, adding water just until the mixture begins to come together. Gather the dough with your hands and knead gently if necessary to get it to hold together. Resist the temptation to add more water. Handling the dough as little as possible, shape it into a thick disk like a hamburger patty, then wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate until chilled, at least two hours or up to one day. Preheat the oven to 425°F. If you have a baking stone, put it in the oven on the middle rack to preheat for at least 45 minutes. Remove the dough from the refrigerator about 10 minutes before you are ready to roll it so it can soften slightly to make rolling it easier. Unwrap the dough and place it between 2 sheets of parchment paper at least 16 inches square. With a rolling pin, flatten the dough into a 15-inch circle. Occasionally lift the top sheet of parchment and lightly flour the dough to prevent sticking, then replace the parchment and invert the dough so the bottom sheet is on top. Peel back that sheet of parchment and lightly flour the dough, then replace the parchment and continue rolling. When the circle is large enough, remove the top sheet of parchment and transfer the dough, still on the bottom sheet of parchment, to a rimless baking sheet. For assembly: Working 2 inches from the edge of the dough, place the nectarine slices in concentric rings. Scatter the raspberries evenly over the nectarines. Sprinkle the fruit with the granulated sugar. Using a palette knife to help you lift the dough off the parchment, gently fold the uncovered edge of the dough over the fruit to make a wide, rough-edged rim. Make sure there are no cracks in the dough for juices to seep through. Brush the rim with the egg wash, then sprinkle the rim with the sparkling sugar. With scissors, cut off the exposed parchment paper. Baking and serving: If you have a baking stone in the oven, slide the galette, still on the bottom sheet of parchment, directly onto the stone. If you do not have a baking stone, bake the galette on the rimless baking sheet. Bake until the crust is golden and the nectarines are juicy, about 50 minutes. Slide the galette onto a rack to cool slightly. To serve, slide it from the rack onto a cutting board and cut into wedges. Serve warm.

lemon meringue pie 1 cup white sugar

2 tbsp. butter

2 tbsp. all-purpose flour

4 egg yolks, beaten

3 tbsp. cornstarch

1 9 inch pie crust, baked (see pg. 40 for crust recipe)

¼ tsp. salt

4 egg whites

11/2 cups water 2 lemons, juiced and zested

6 tbsp. white sugar

Preheat oven to 350°F. For the filling: In a medium saucepan, whisk together 1 cup sugar, flour, cornstarch, and salt. Stir in water, lemon juice and lemon zest. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until mixture comes to a boil. Stir in butter. Place egg yolks in a small bowl and gradually whisk in 1/2 cup of hot sugar mixture. Whisk egg yolk mixture back into remaining sugar mixture. Bring to a boil and continue to cook while stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat. Pour filling into baked pastry shell. For the meringue: In a large glass or metal bowl, whip egg whites until foamy. Add sugar gradually, and continue to whip until stiff peaks form. Spread meringue over pie, sealing the edges at the crust. Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes, or until meringue is golden brown. Serve and enjoy! YOUR HOME MAG AZ INE® | 43
