I N T H I S I S S U E we take a look at the latest in-home technologies. Smart home automation can change the way we interact with our homes, from how we cook and clean to how we keep our property secure and safe. With so many amazing devices designed to simplify and integrate our lives, it is easy to get caught up in the newest gadgets. It is also easy to get caught up in our smartphones—work is always right there, just one alert away. Throughout this Fall season, we should take some time to unplug from technology. While it offers convenience to our lives, it can also be a distraction from the important events and moments happening around us. Have dinner with your family, grab coffee with a friend, or take some time to spend in nature. Whatever we do we can’t forget to connect with others first.

eople love a good before and after conversion. The amazing changes, the growth, the development—we love to see a transformation and that is something at which Kristen Williams excels. Her eye for possibilities allows her to create modern and awardwinning projects from homes most developers would overlook. Believing that preservation is always best, Williams prefers to take older homes which have been part of the Naples community for decades and update them to suit the contemporary Naples resident. “She looks for homes with good bones in a good location. If it has those two things she believes in, remodeling instead of tearing down, which in most cases would be the easier option,” explains Olde Naples Real Estate broker Chris Wells. Those two main requirements were met in a 1964 bungalow that has now been transformed into a beautiful, coastal-inspired cottage. This home has undergone a metamorphosis much like that of a butterfly, emerging at the end as something beautiful and new. Sitting just one block from Broad Avenue South in Old Naples, Williams felt she could create a space for the stylish Naples resident while still preserving the original flavor of the home. Her plan included changing the layout of the home to create an open floor plan, raising the ceilings, and adding additional square footage through a garage with guest suite above. She also revised the back yard to create a pool and entertaining space with the indoor-outdoor living opportunities that people look for in Naples. The end result is another outstanding home to add to her list of local projects.

cottage details
While the entire home has been radically revived, the changes to the front elevation are remarkable. Overgrown landscaping was removed, the dismal brown exterior has been changed to a clean and beachy white, and the one-dimensional architecture reimagined to create a beach cottage that fits perfectly on the lot and in the neighborhood. The original “L” shape of the home can still be seen, but a large front porch, sporting comfortable rocking chairs; and an oversized window now adds symmetry and visual interest to the originally flat appearance of the home. Not widely seen in Naples, decorative half-round Victorian-inspired siding in the gables add a historic feel to the home’s new exterior bringing a little of Williams’ Boston roots to Naples.
open and airy
Inside, the home’s choppy floor plan and low ceilings were replaced with an open concept living experience. “Literally every part of this home was touched by Williams’ team,” says Wells. “In addition to the visible design changes, every wall was taken down completely or moved to create more space. The plumbing was reworked or replaced, and the home was rewired. While those features aren’t visible, a well-done renovation means that a large portion of the work and budget goes towards those less glamorous but extremely important changes.” Now, the home is open and bright with a functional floor plan that puts the kitchen and main living area together for easy entertaining and livability. The natural textures Williams loves to include in her designs can be seen in the live edge side table and linen-covered furniture. Mixed metals and leading-edge touches like the acrylic coffee table and animal prints elevate the space.

chef space
The kitchen sits under a beautiful raised ceiling with windows for extra light. The original U-shaped kitchen has been replaced with a layout that maximizes cooking space through a large center island topped with Mystery-white marble. Williams loves to add a Lacanche dual fuel range to her projects as they mix timeless beauty and culinary history with stateof-the-art technology. It is easy to see why these beautiful ranges quickly become the center of the kitchen. Here, the range is clad in white enamel with gold hardware that perfectly matches the knobs, drawer pulls, and light fixture in the kitchen. White shiplap adds to the beachside feel of the kitchen and ties together the ceilings in the main areas of the home.

cool and colorful
Signifying new beginnings and rebirth, butterflies are the perfect mascot for this master bedroom. The master suite is full of color. Two painted chairs flank a table with a Mid-century flair while a wet bar provides owners and the perfect place to start the day with a quick cup of coffee. Light wood floors are carried through the master bedroom and mimicked in the ceiling detail above the comfortable poster bed. Here again, both modern and classic elements are blended through art, textures, and colors.

room to spare
The home’s new layout provides extra space to the original home so there is now plenty of room for family and friends. A guest room with a bunkhouse feel is a clever way to add more sleeping space while not making the room feel crowded. In a family-friendly location like Old Naples, these bunk style sleeping arrangements are popular options for visiting grandchildren. The nautical colors of blue, red, and white match the home’s location and exterior style. Here, the natural tones of the wide plank wood floors create the perfect platform for the space.
textures, layers, depth
The colorful study provides a comfortable room for reading or work. The natural fibers of the woven grass rug anchor the room while the theme of metals and acrylic materials is carried in from the kitchen and great room. Williams enjoys mixing colors, textures, and patterns to add depth to a space. Her designs create a curated interior that looks as if it has been built piece by piece over time.

outdoor entertaining
A relaxing oasis is now found in the backyard. The once cluttered patio has been expanded to include an outdoor kitchen and seating space that seamlessly blends with the indoor rooms. Visible above the perfectly redesigned new pool and spa is the addition of the garage with a welcoming guest suite.

keeping an herb garden Healthy and essential in many dishes, herbs are easy to grow no matter how much space you have. Beyond flavoring your food, herbs like basil, sage, and peppermint have some amazing benefits such as the ability to fight infections, lowering blood sugar levels, or reducing IBS pain. Many of these herbs are more vibrant and flavorful when fresh from a garden, so you may want to consider keeping some plants in your home. These herbs do well in decorative pots and if you have enough light, you can grow most of them in a kitchen window for easy cooking access.
18 | YOU R HOM E M AGAZIN E
BASIL
Basil is one of the most useful and beautiful herbs you can grow. It needs to be in a location that gets 6 to 8 hours of full sun daily and your soil should be moist but well-drained.
THYME
Thyme can tolerate indirect light making it perfect for an indoor herb garden. It grows best in a clay planter since clay allows the plant to dry out between watering. Mix sand, soil, peat moss, and perlite to provide adequate nutrients and drainage.
SAGE
Sage will grow almost anywhere, but the flavor is best when it receives a lot of sunlight. It is a drought-tolerant herb so wait until the soil is dry to give it a thorough watering. Also, don’t over-fertilize as it makes the flavor less intense.
ROSEMARY
Rosemary is a savory herb with a pungent flavor and attractive leaves. Plants should be in a pot with a quality potting mixture that is well-drained. Rosemary will rot in soggy soil.
CHIVES
Pot individual chive plants in a 6 to 8 inch diameter pot with good drainage and place in an area with direct sunlight. Use a light, well-draining potting mix and allow the soil to dry out slightly before watering again.
OREGANO
Known as the “joy of the mountain”, oregano is a must-have in a culinary garden. Oregano will grow well indoors, but it needs to have adequate heat and sunlight. Water thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch.
BAY LAUREL
Bay laurel is used to flavour soups and stews. Restricting its roots will prevent it from outgrowing your home since it is a tree. Water thoroughly but let the soil dry out slightly between waterings.
MINT
Mint is the perfect starter plant for an herb garden. Plant your mint in a pot that’s at least 12 inches in diameter, with a rich and well-drained soil. Place in full sunlight but make sure it’s shaded during the hottest parts of the afternoon.
CILANTRO
Cilantro is a highly aromatic herb used in many Asian and Mexican cuisines. Cilantro likes evenly moist, neutral soil that’s rich in organic matter. Try not to wet the leaves when watering as cilantro is susceptible to mildew.

from room to room, or if you enjoy watching summer blockbusters at home, the latest entertainment technology can be integrated throughout your home. For movie buffs, home automation makes your movie night epic. Between the lights, the beautiful 4K resolution, and the latest high definition sound systems, there is no reason to see movies anywhere else but from the comfort of your own home. Now, you can command your automated home theater with a single device.“Pause the movie and raise the lights in a specified zone when you’re ready to get some popcorn and fix a drink. And when the pizza guy arrives, answer the door from the same device you’re already using to control your theater via the HD intercom,” says liasonhomes.com. This technology also helps you begin your day the right way. Rise and shine as your morning playlist plays softly through the inwall speakers while whole home audio provides the perfect breakfast soundtrack to help you get ready for your day. automation can be used interchangeably. In fact the term “smart home automation” is commonly used to describe a home where the electronic devices are connected to a remotely controllable network. Safewise.com describes home automation as “a step toward what is referred to as the “Internet of Things,” in which everything has an assigned IP address, and can be monitored and accessed remotely.” This means you can dictate how, when, and why a device reacts. Home automation technology can send alerts to your smartphone pertaining to a variety of events. You can receive notifications when there is a water leak, when visitors are at your front your door, or you can remotely turn on lights while at work, on vacation, or out later than expected. You may also automate thermostats, lamps, light switches, light bulbs, locks, home security sensors, video cameras, life safety sensors, speakers, and more. Cheer on your favorite teams as you watch on your 4K outdoor television with weather- and heat-resistant features. From a refrigerator that can alert you when you are out of milk to an oven that won’t burn your dinner, home automation really shines through with smart appliances. Ovens can now help you automate the cooking process, update you on the progress of your meal, or make sure you are following a recipe correctly. The Samsung Family Hub fridge has a touch screen that acts as the communication center for your home sharing calendars, photos, notes and more. It even has cameras inside so you see what you’re low on while out shopping. Smart thermostats are another timesaving device you can add to your home. They let you remotely control your home’s temperature from your tablet, smartphone, or desktop for greater control over your A/C and heating unit. The ability to remotely control your home’s temperature is great for people with busy schedules. Saven has created an international following from her South African studio where she designs and curates distinctive wallpapers to match everyone’s style and color scheme. From soft ombrés, to striking geometrics, to bold, large scale florals, her fresh touch on classic design elements gives people who want to incorporate the beauty of wallpaper a modern way to accomplish their vision. As Saven explains, “Wallpaper has become much more user-friendly in the last few years. In the past you were confined to rolls of wallpaper in particular patterns. Now, you are able to not only tap into a diverse range of designs, but you are also able to customize them to suit your unique setting or color palette.” With these advances, people can add wallpaper to any room. While bright, colorful patterns are often applied to accent a room, Saven also offers more subtle options that can be used more liberally. “There really is no limit to where you can use wallpaper. Guest bathrooms are a great place to have a bit of fun with your designs whereas a bedroom might need something a bit more calm and soothing,” says Saven. “Wallpaper can either be a backdrop or a talking piece so decide what you want its purpose to be and then the design will follow.” For people ordering their wallpaper online, measuring can seem a bit daunting, but it needn’t be. Saven has a few tips to assist you in ordering the correct amount for your room. “For our wallpaper, we only require the

We don't need to know the cut outs— that is the air conditioner, doorways or archways, unless of course you would like us to superimpose your wallpaper onto the wall so you can see the completed result before purchasing. You don’t need to measure baseboards or moldings and don’t stress if you're an inch or two out, as we always add a bit extra.” Once your wallpaper is up, you will want to keep it looking new. Just like paint, wallpaper is very low maintenance once it has been applied. “All our papers can be wiped using a slightly damp cloth so that's good news,” Saven says. One thing to consider is exposed edges. If you are wrapping wallpaper around corners or using it on a wall with an edge, that might be rubbed or brushed as people walk by, it is best to use a protective trim to keep your wallpaper from ripping or peeling. Keep ventilation in mind as moisture can shorten the wallpaper’s character. Be sure the space will dry properly before you spend the time and money wallpapering a frequently used bathroom. The popularity and affordability of smart home products has led research firm Gartner, Inc. to predict that by 2022 a typical family home, in a mature affluent market, could contain several hundred smart objects. as frivolous or luxurious, technology-enhanced furnishings and décor can mean the difference between a rest home and resting in one’s own home. For example, a homeowner with declining strength or arthritic hands who finds drawing heavy draperies difficult, can adjust motorized draperies easily with the push of a button or by speaking a voice command. Modern smart beds offer raised heads, raised feet, anti-gravity settings, massage features, and temperature control, all of which aid certain infirmities as much as they enhance sleep. Adapting a home to technology may involve cables, cords and controllers. The furniture industry has risen to the challenge of concealing unsightly tangles of wires with built-in charging stations. Loving Art in the Digital World BY MARLISSA GARDNER
W
hen I first resolved to launch Emillions Art, I had a vision of providing the fine art world with digital exhibitions and personal consulting while maintaining complete transparency. Back then, the idea of buying high value items online, sight unseen, was still new. As I careened inevitably toward my appointment with techno-entrepreneurship, someone close to me posed a black hole of a question: in order to sell art, don’t people need to see the artwork personally before they would buy it? “Is this true?” I wondered. I fretted. I started to doubt my own instincts. Leading up to this moment, I had begun to sense the sea change in consumer habits—their growing desire to gain immediate access to previously untouchable art properties. Be they contemporary or modern and old master works, I believed there was coming a growing demand for digital access to these tangible assets. But this big scary question, would “web-surfers” become online buyers, gave me pause and I faced the dismal reevaluation of my plans. But as a deep thinker and investigator, and wanting to engage my due diligence as a burgeoning business woman, reevaluate I did.
TIME TOLD THE TALE Since that time, of course, we have seen proof again and again, consumers are a determined bunch. Online shopping recently surpassed brick and mortar sales for the first time since the advent of the online store. With revenues for the products—and shares—of huge companies such as Google, Amazon and Apple reaching into the trillions, there is no doubt the hurdles of online purchasing have been cleared with ease.
HE[ART] As more online purchasing platforms come online and the market share dwindles, there is a growing need for every brand to have a clear

understanding of their differentiator, what benefit they provide to the qualified consumer. Fine Art is a very different product than most others. It’s the only thing that seems to combine emotion and strategy so neatly. Art consultants will tell you, “Buy what you love!” Art investment advisors will say, “Buy what will pay dividends!” Can both be true? Our answer? —YES! Fine art is one of the few things you can invest in and follow your heart to a happy end. Finding someone to guide you through the complex and somewhat laborious process of acquiring those works that bring you joy, and value is even more important when working in the online realm. You need someone to help you find art with heart!
TIME IS ON YOUR SIDE One of the unique challenges of modern buying, especially online, is the expectation of “time to acquire”. When you are looking for a new shoe or that workout accessory, it can easily and quickly be purchased and shipped to
your doorstep, sometimes in a span of hours. This is often not the case with Fine Art, especially when the pieces are works of old and modern masters. There is a cavalcade of steps to establish authenticity, verifying the origin of the work, and preparing it for its eventual home. Even before a work of this caliber is available for sale, it goes through many phases of verification to safeguard buyers from fraud—a growing problem in the world of Fine Art buying and selling, especially online. To counter any potential issues, we spend countless hours through various trips around the globe, conducting face to face meetings with a host of sources, forensic investigators, and securing relationships with renowned appraisers all in an effort to connect you, the art lover, with the art you love! When you buy through us, you have unique access to Emillions’ Global Network of Partners, Experts and Collectors along with our special attention to honesty, integrity and due diligence. Really, this is what makes us different than many other online platforms. restful reminders
A
s summer turns to fall, schedules once again become hectic. Kids are back in school, work is in full swing, and a good night’s sleep is more important than ever. According to the Harvard Business Review, sleep is more important than food on a short term basis and sleep deprivation can be dangerous and detrimental. Yet sleep is often the first thing we willingly sacrifice when life gets busy! In our 24/7 world, most adults are getting well under the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep needed each night. Here are a couple cozy items that will turn your bedroom into a deep sleep zone so you have more energy to take on the day.
3 REASONS SLEEP IS VITAL FOR HEALTHY LIVING
1
WHEN YOU SLEEP, YOUR BODY RELEASES CYTOKINES WHICH HELP YOU FIGHT INFECTIONS. SLEEP DEPRIVATION CAN ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO A LACK OF INFECTION-FIGHTING ANTIBODIES.
2
REST GIVES YOUR BODY TIME TO REJUVENATE AND HEAL. CRITICAL RESTORATIVE FUNCTIONS, LIKE TISSUE REPAIR AND MUSCLE GROWTH OCCUR ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY DURING DEEP SLEEP.
3
WHILE AWAKE, NEURONS PRODUCE A CHEMICAL CALLED ADENOSINE WHICH MAKES YOU SLEEPY WHEN IT BUILDS UP. AS YOU SLEEP, YOUR BODY CLEARS ITSELF OF ADENOSINE, SO YOU WAKE UP ALERT AND REFRESHED.

T
he Naples area has a variety of unique neighborhoods from beach side enclaves to some of the best golf course communities in the country. It also has a large sector that has been developed for homes set on acreage. From Golden Gate Estates to Livingston Woods, to the Rural Estates, Collier County offers people the opportunity to live on larger lots, usually ranging between 1.5 to 5 acres. These home sites give families plenty of room to grow, and, since these communities are not deed restricted, they offer the privacy
36 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E
and freedom that gated communities usually can not. People move to these communities to build their dream homes so they can have larger workshops for their hobbies, gardens, tree houses for their children, host bonfires, and many other considerations. Space and privacy were the reasons Melinda and Paul Sullivan decided to purchase their 2.5 acre lot on Oakes Boulevard. “We were so excited to find this land; it was the perfect lot in the perfect location,” says Melinda Sullivan. They wanted to move out of their
gated community and build the home they had dreamed of for years. “We are both real estate agents so we’ve been listing and showing homes throughout Naples for quite a while. I’ve always made mental notes of the layouts I’ve liked in different homes so when it came time to design our own, we knew exactly what we wanted to incorporate.” That decisiveness helped the Sullivans and their custom builder, Gulfstream Homes, as they developed design plans. Having some idea of what you are looking for, both in size and in lifestyle needs, can help as you meet
winding road
(BELOW) “One of the reasons we loved working with Gulfstream Homes was their ability to bring our vision to life,” explains Sullivan. “When we started to design the house, we knew we wanted a driveway that wound through the beautiful trees on the lot to give the impression of a country road.” Part of building on your own lot in the Estates is the clearing process. While non-native vegetation must be removed, you should be able to work with your builder to choose the native trees you want to keep on your lot. Trees shade your property, keeping temperatures down while protecting the soil from erosion.
setting the stage
(BOTTOM) The home’s entry was designed to be a beautiful focal point. A bank of large windows illuminate and open up the hallways that lead to guest and master bedrooms. By displaying vibrant, modern pieces in the long hallway, the Sullivans set their color palette for the rest of the home.
color pop
(ABOVE) The interior is built on a foundation of neutral tones with touches of bright colors that match the Sullivan’s dynamic personalities. “A home should be a place that reflects you, your tastes and personality,” says Sullivan. They chose easy-care tile that resembles wood planks since it is simple to clean. They also worked with the Gulfstream team to create architectural details like the floating ceiling and wall panels that break up the long expanses. LED rope lighting illuminates the space between the panels creating a soft glow in the evenings.

floating walls
Having a uniquely designed kitchen makes it a focal point in the home. The floating middle wall, with easy-access open shelving, creates a walk through pantry behind the double oven, stove, and refrigerator. A wine and coffee bar area is topped with more storage space for kitchen gadgets. “I saw this design in a home years ago and always remembered thinking how functional it was. I love to cook and to bake so it’s important that I not only have ample storage, but that the kitchen also looks great. This was an excellent solution,” says Sullivan. White Quartz counters and cabinetry keep the kitchen light and open.

Candy apple red is sprinkled throughout the home. Here, the plush fabric of the dining room chairs adds softness to the modern silhouette. The glass table with chrome legs is modern but subdued so it does not draw attention away from the chairs which are the star of the space. with your builder to design your home. Having the ability to make changes in real time is a huge help. “When clients come in to either modify one of our existing floor plans or to create a totally custom design, we are able to show them the changes as they are made. They can watch us move virtual walls around and then walk out with the finished plan in hand,” says Gulfstream Homes’ Director of Business Operations and Managing Member, Jeneane Bennett. Bennett also takes point on the other design aspects of the home, and assists her clients in choosing everything from their pavers to their bathroom paint colors. When building in the Estates and surrounding areas, where clearing and infrastructure needs are different, it is important to find a builder who has experience with these types of lots. From wells to septic tanks, many people are not familiar with the unique water and sewage needs the Estates presents. Working with a builder who is accustomed to dealing

tranquil tile
The theme of bright colors mixed with neutral tones is carried into the master bath to create a tranquil room. “The Sullivans were smart in their choice of finishes. They understood that you don’t have to break the bank to get something that looks amazing and functions well,” says Bennett. You can spend all the money in the world on fine finishes but it really comes down to how they are used and installed. Tricks like adding an accent wall for color and interest, as seen here in the vertically installed blue glass tiles, means you can create a beautiful space that actually makes the room feel larger.
with these differences can make the process much smoother. “We were going to interview three builders but after talking with the team at Gulfstream Homes, we knew we would be working with them on our home,” says Melinda. With a long history of on your lot construction, Gulfstream brought the knowledge and experience the Sullivans desired. They also appreciated Gulfstream Homes’ commitment to communication, which is an important part of the building process. “When you build a home, the unknowns are the stressful part. We think that this should be a fun and exciting time so we do our best to make sure our team is communicating on a daily basis with the
40 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E
new homeowners,” says Michael Peel, co-founded of Gulfstream Homes. This commitment includes limiting the number of projects supervisors manage and using special software that clients log into to check on daily progress reports. The Sullivans enjoyed that level of personal attention during their build. “Our supervisor, Dominic Buzzy, checked in with us constantly and was available anytime we had a question or concern. He actually became a friend to us during the process. This is probably the most expensive purchase one will ever make, so for us, having someone like Dominic available when we needed him was such a stress reliever and allowed us to enjoy the process and the final result.”
mixing styles
The master bedroom combines traditional and modern design aspects. A tufted headboard in a metallic silver cloth updates a very familiar bedroom item. The classic shape and muted tones of the bedside table plays against the vivid colors of the roman shades. “We wanted to make sure every room in the house had a view of this great lot. As you go from room to room you will notice the windows are all fairly large to take advantage of the beauty outside, says Sullivan.

parks and rec The Sullivans chose to keep most of the lot wooded. “We wanted to create a park-like setting here. Moving from a community, we were looking for something private. I love to garden so for me, it was important to have a mix of open and natural spaces, says Sullivan. They also created a pool and lanai area that takes advantage of the home’s beautiful setting. To facilitate an easy transition from inside to outside, Sullivan kept the flooring level of the lanai and the great room the same so there is no step down to differentiate between the spaces. She also selected furniture and accessories that look and feel like indoor pieces so there is continuity between living areas. Seating groups make the lanai the perfect place to entertain during the cooler months.

WHETHER YOU ARE a home brewer, a gardener, or a car junkie, the garage is an excellent location for you to pursue your hobbies and passions. For people with children and grandchildren, they become our passion projects. As we are facing the challenge of raising kids in an age of smartphones and video games, parents often find themselves trying to encourage their kids to get outside more. Setting a childhood foundation for an active lifestyle is important, but that comes with a whole new set of challenges—where to store the equipment. From kites to kayaks and balls to bikes, if you have active kids, you probably have a cluttered garage. Here are a few tips to keep it kid-friendly and organized. Balls—they bounce, they roll, they provide hours of fun; but they do not stack neatly away in a cabinet. In the toy or sports section of a any large department store you’ll see tall cages with side “bars” made from bungy like material. These ball stays are flexible enough to make room for balls of all shapes and sizes while keeping them out of the aisle. Now you can have that same system in your garage. Walls are an underutilized storage space. We love to install Storewall systems that let you place racks and hooks on the wall to easily store different items and equipment. You can place the shelves and holders at different heights so smaller children can put their helmets and toys away. Heavier items can be stored higher on the wall for safety. Using these storage walls also allows you to create zones in the garage. You can easily hang sports equipment on one wall while keeping others available for yard tools or car equipment. Garage storage can be just as beautiful as indoor closet and pantry options. Because of our warm and humid climates, the enclosed storage systems by Inspired Garage are perfect for keeping out bugs and reptiles looking for dry, shady homes. Beautiful design and new color ranges provide the adults in your family with excellent choices for storage areas. Creating an adult space when you have kids in or visiting your home is important—they might be your biggest passion but don’t forget to create a space for you to pursue other interests as well. A balanced adult is a balanced parent! 44 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E
Take advantage of vertical space by creating storage walls. Hooks and racks are easily adjustable so kids can hang up their toys when they are done to keep the garage organized.
Adults need their own space. Mixing textures like these metal upper cabinets with thermally fused dark laminate is a great way to elevate your garage.
Beyond bikes and kayaks, the garage is a perfect place to store your paper goods and non-perishables. Adding creative storage options like a ball stay is a fun idea that makes your garage more kid-friendly.
