simple but special home was the desire of this New Orleans family when they moved to Florida’s East Coast. Relocating for their daughter’s education, the family wanted to put down roots in a place that was reflective of their personalities and lifestyle. They sought out help from Nikki Levy, Creative Director at Nikki Levy Interiors, to help them realize their dream home filled with life, while also appealing to their taste for more organic materials and colors. “Overall, I would say the house is a great example of contemporary eclectic design,” says Levy. “The challenge was creating that balance between making each space clean and precise while maintaining their personality and ensuring the items we chose were interesting enough to stand on their own. Each piece had to be really special in order for me to incorporate them, so that the spaces didn’t feel overcrowded or under-designed.”

A family affair, Levy was able to help everyone infuse their own tastes into the home. “The family was wonderful to work with, even their girls got involved with their own bedroom designs. Most of the selections were made during the height of the pandemic shutdowns and the owners were so understanding about timing issues and delays,” Levy explains. “They were also trusting of my eye and suggestions, and I’m so happy I was able to guide them through the process during this unique situation.”

The expertise and knowledge Levy offered comes from a lifetime of

experience and a lineage of builders, furniture makers, and craftsmen.

Originally from South Africa, Levy and her family moved to the States with three young children in 2010, “After everyone had settled in, I felt like it was time to get back to work doing what I love,” she says. “It started small, I worked out of my bedroom, then the dining room, and then found a small office. Now I am fortunate to have a team of 10 people and a roster of clients again.” Operating under the philosophy that each client is unique, she has created a reputation for listening to her clients as she makes their functional home a stylish place that matches their tastes and lifestyle. “I love what I do and have been finding the joy in it again as my team and I work through the challenges supply chain issues and lockdowns have created for our industry,” Levy explains. “We are discovering new ways to work and source items and it’s helping us create an even better experience for our clients as we’ve pulled together to create really beautiful interiors.”

ELEVATE The home’s exterior features contemporary lines and soft colors that make a big impact upon arrival. Pavers lead to two separate garage spaces covered by coffee colored doors with linear window details. Stone accents are subtle and enhance the look of the modern landscaping.

BEGI N Off the home’s entry, what was supposed to be the formal dining room is now a comfortable reading room, perfect for getting a peaceful start to the day. “They are very introspective people and wanted a cozier space to ‘just be’,” says Levy. Transforming the space into a reading and reflection area started with two chairs from Bernhardt that Levy personally approved after making sure they were comfortable in person. She then added two reading lamps behind for visual appeal and functionality.

On the opposite wall, Levy designed a veneered wood built-in that was thin enough to accommodate a table and chairs, should the owners decide to convert the space back into a dining room and backed it with a fantastic wallpaper by Phillip Jeffries that mimics the look of terrazzo. Outside, a small atrium has been painted in a warm tone and vines have been added to give the space life and an organic element.

GA T H E R The living room is a study in color. “They wanted the home to have color but not overwhelmed by the tones and how it was used,” says Levy. The teal velvet sofa makes a statement, but doesn’t feel gaudy thanks to the organic elements and colors Levy used to finish the space. For example, the unique wallpaper by Kelly Wearstler that accents the custom wall unit is softened thanks to the grasscloth used at the back of the unit. Levy explains, “The juxtaposition between matte and velvet finishes keep the bolder pieces from feeling too loud in the space.”

GRA Z E In the kitchen, Levy helped the owners make selections based on their desire for a functional space that matched the elevated design of the rest of the home. “They loved the idea of a bright and contemporary space with clean lines that embraced the breakfast nook since it would be their main dining area,” says Levy. “I love negative space, so I enjoyed playing with that concept here as we picked a cabinet color that almost perfectly matches the porcelain tiles.” The light washed wood laminate cabinets pair well with the Caesarstone quartz countertops.

The breakfast room adds a pop of color to the kitchen through the unique fabric used on the chairs. Pulling from other rooms in the house, like the library upstairs and the adjacent living room, Levy selected a fabric with burnt orange and smoky blues for the breakfast nook. The tone of the bleached, white oak table from Worlds Away matches the cabinets while adding in a more organic element. Above, a chrome chandelier offers some sparkle to the space and continues the unique and contemporary lighting theme throughout the house.

LEARN A home full of readers, Levy set out to create a fun but relaxing space for the family to gather on the second floor. “This is my favorite space we completed,” she says. “I wanted this to be a space where people could enjoy a joyous moment in the center of the home.” Starting with a pop of color thanks to the burnt orange Phillip Jeffries wallpaper, the rest of the room took shape around the curved sofa with boldly printed back cushions. Here again, natural fibers provide a balance to the color and pattern. The pebble table from the Phillips Collection is finished with gold leaf inside which looks stunning against the bright white finish. “Everything in the home was selected to either add excitement and interest to a room or to bring balance to a space,” Levy explains. “The house is filled with color and patterns, but because of the balance, it doesn’t overwhelm anyone or any space.”

RE ST The cohesive flow of the home can be seen in the master bedroom as earthy tones meet touches of metals all enhanced by contemporary shapes and patterns. Next to the upholstered, bolster headboard with wood frame, the shagreen nightstand is topped with a lamp with leatherlike finish. Phillip Jeffries wallpaper with a geometric woven pattern elevates this chic yet simple room.

RE STOR E The master bathroom was designed to be a classic and simple space that offers a spa-like atmosphere. “They didn’t want an over the top space, so we picked elements that are subtle but elevated,” says Levy. Cabinets have been finished with a laminate that mimics distressed wood while flat cabinet panels are in keeping with the home’s contemporary eclectic feel. Caesarstone quartz counters offer durable surfaces for the start and end of the day.

P RO D U C E Both husband and wife needed a functional home office so Levy designed a multipurpose room that can be used for guests, kids, and as a work from home space. With plenty of storage options, the room offers light and a view, which was a requirement for the couple in their home office. Levy used sleek window treatments accented with subtle trim to bring a special touch into the room.

C R EA T E “Both girls have such unique personalities and were a big part of designing their own bedrooms,” says Levy. One’s love of tennis influenced this space accented with a wall of green, yello, and brown—the colors of a tennis court and ball. The elevated pattern allows for a more mature take on the theme that will bring longevity to the space as the room’s resident grows. Levy is a fan of sourcing items for kids rooms that are cost effective but refined. “If you spend a lot of money on furniture in your children’s bedrooms, you can feel really married to the original theme or item even after they’ve outgrown the pieces,” she explains. “There are great options on the market that look wonderful but won’t leave you feeling guilty if your child wants to update their look in a few years.”

It’s Grill Time S

ummer is the time to take full advantage of your outdoor kitchen or grill as your family spends time in the sun and pool. Grilling is a delicious way to prepare your meats and vegetables, but there are things to consider before you purchase your next outdoor cooking setup.

Grilling Using high, direct heat for short periods of time, this is the main outdoor cooking technique people think about when they picture themselves in front of the grill. You should look for temperatures of 450°F or higher when grilling so you can get a good sear on your proteins and veggies. The goal is to expose one side of your food to huge amounts of heat rather than surrounding it with convective heat so grilling is most often done with the lid open.

Barbecuing While people tend to use the term barbecuing and grilling interchangeably, true barbecuing is done on moderate heat of around 350°F–425°F. This cooking style mainly relies on indirect heat along with a closed lid to promote convection heat within the grill. By cooking with indirect heat for anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours, barbecued food, like bone-in chicken breasts or briskets, come off the grill with a beautifully cooked exterior while remaining tender and juicy inside.

Smoking While you can smoke meat using a grill, smokers are specifically designed to handle this cooking technique.

Low and slow, this cooking method means your grill’s target temperature should be between 175°F–250°F, and meat will take hours to cook. Smoking also typically uses large cuts of meat like brisket and pork butt, but you can smoke a variety of cuts and meats. The goal, especially when cooking beef and pork, is to achieve the perfect crispy “bark” outside and a tender, juicy center. Indirect heat is the hallmark of smoking.

With great weather and an outdoor lifestyle envied by everyone living in cold climates, Florida homes offer unrivaled outdoor spaces. One way to ensure that you will enjoy these areas for years to come is to pick the right deck and lanai materials. Choosing a deck that will weather the elements that Florida brings, especially in the height of summer, will ensure longevity and usability. Here are a few things you should consider as well as some great material options to look at as you build or update your current

outdoor areas.

One of the first points to consider when picking pool deck materials is its slip-resistant nature. So many beautiful and trendy options might be hazardous when wet. While all pool deck materials can become slippery when wet, some, like tile, can be especially hazardous.

There are also things you can do to make somewhat slippery surfaces less slick, so ask about finishes and textures that can be applied to help keep you and your guests safe.

Florida is known for hot summers, so the best decks reflect heat. Darker-colored brick and stone pool decks can become extremely

hot to the touch after baking in the sun and are hard on bare feet. Another perk to picking a surface that reflects the heat is you will wind up with a cooler lanai space that will let you enjoy your outdoor living areas later into the summer months.

It’s also important to pick a material that gives you some flexibility with design. From colors and patterns, you want to be able to create a custom outdoor area that reflects your personal style. Some materials, like decorative concrete, give you the ability to select any shape, size, color and surface treatment for your pool deck.

Finally, you want to make sure the materials you choose are easy to maintain. As you pick your deck materials, ask about cracking, shifting, and any yearly maintenance that might come with the material. Pool decks have special performance requirements when compared with a typical patio. They need to resist constant exposure to water and harsh pool chemicals, be splinter-proof, and slip-resistant.

One of the most versatile pool deck and lanai materials, concrete can be stamped, shaped, and poured to create an endless amount of design variations. While smooth concrete can be slippery, there are a variety of ways to make this a safer option. From broomed or exposed aggregate finishes, to putting down a textured overlay or mixing a clear plastic grit into the sealer before it’s applied, you can make a rougher surface that won’t hurt your feet but will also stop you from falling. Other positives are its heat-resistant nature and ease of maintaining it. One issue you will likely run into down the road, especially when exposed to the elements, is cracking. This is almost impossible to prevent but is fixable.

Pavers are a popular option as they come in many different materials, sizes, shapes, and colors. Interlocking concrete pavers are a good alternative to plain concrete and are designed to resemble cobblestones, granite, tile, or traditional bricks. They are also a budgetconscious choice that is easy to find and pavers are easy to replace if damaged. You will need to maintain your pavers by adding sand to the “grout” lines periodically and by making sure weeds don’t grow through the spaces between the pavers. They also tend to shift over time.

Another fantastic material is natural stone, especially one that has enough texture to make it slip-resistant. While many types are available, prices can vary based on your region; stones from local quarries will cost less than those shipped from across the country. Some to consider are quartzite, sandstone, limestone, granite, and porphyry. Natural stone tends to be the most expensive choice because of its beautiful aesthetic and high-end quality.

While faux stone is available, it can look fake, so inspect large samples before you choose this option. One thing to consider is the color of the stone. Darker colors or shades can become hot on bare feet, so make sure you are picking the

right color so you don’t burn yourself during the hottest part of the day.

The last material we suggest considering is brick. Brick has been around for more than 5,000 years, so it’s a proven material and surface for a pool deck. Durable and easy to maintain, brick offers a classic look that works well with more traditional designs. It also comes in a range of colors so you can match the rest of your home’s design style.

Bricks can become mossy if they are in a shady area and moss is slippery. Over time, bricks develop a chalky substance on the surface. Some homeowners don’t mind this build up and view it similar to a patina on copper. If you aren’t a fan of that “aged” look, the powdery deposit can be removed with a mild detergent solution. You will also want to seal brick every few years to keep it looking its best.

GEOMETRICS IN A RUSTICALLY ELEGANT TRANSITIONAL HOME

hen Stock Development picked Diana Hall and her team as their interior designer firm of choice for a spec home they were building in Bonita Bay, Hall understood the task at hand. She says, “I knew it would be architecturally interesting and wonderfully built, but that it would also be a ‘white box’ and it would be up to us to imprint a personality on it, making the house a home.”

The four-bedroom four-bath home was transitional in style and Hall wanted to create the perfect year-round residence, one where a family could gather together and entertain friends, but not be overly fussy. “We envisioned a design of rustic elegance but with a sophisticated color palette to create a flowing narrative throughout the home.”

Hall knows a thing or two about elegance, having been an award-winning interior designer in Southwest Florida for decades and earning a reputation as one of the go-to designers in the luxury home market. “At Diana Hall Design, we do our best to elevate the art of interior design with seamless style,

elegant design elements, and lush interiors that are as inviting as they are distinct. We are all about bringing a client’s aesthetic to life and when designing a spec home, we employ years of experience and an active imagination to allow visitors to see themselves living and thriving in the home,” she says. “Often buyers just bring their personal items and move right in, not having to change a thing.”

Hall and her team also benefited from getting to choose all background materials from the overflowing inventory of Stock Design Studio. “Their selections are so diverse, we were like kids in a candy store,” says Hall. “We appreciated working where the blank canvas of the home benefitted from details and built-ins that were so deftly done, it was an absolute joy to be able to overlay our creative narrative. Stock’s architecture and our design details worked so well together that we were able to realize our vision for a very comfortable and intimate home for a family, but one that could also accommodate entertaining on a grand scale.”

The dramatic ceiling is the focal point of the elegant living room. Cross beams inset with shiplap are stained a deep greige to match the wide-plank wood floor. A geometric pattern on the room’s back wall was created with applied molding and painted in Sherwin Williams’ “Amazing Gray” to provide contrast to the Travertine marble tiles behind the console. That wall houses a flat screen television and shelf with its ambient light drawing the eye upward. A stylized wheel chandelier from Wilson’s Lighting brings the soaring ceiling into perspective. A tufted leather stool from Vanguard’s customizable line and twin linen sofas flank a chunky wood coffee table set atop a Hadinger’s tone-on-tone wool rug. Two Sarried console tables and Hall’s favorite, a painted and glazed spiral wood end table, topped with a unique Flow Decor ribbed table lamp with a Lucite base completes the scene.

Making clever use of a built-in niche in the dining room, Hall designed a lighted wine display case, with bottles safely behind glass doors supplied by a shower door company. A Crystorama globe chandelier of rubbed bronze, sporting a single crystal drop, hangs from the ceiling designed to mimic that of the living room’s entertainment wall, illuminating the square 60-inch light wood tabletop. Seating for eight is provided by a comfortable Cox banquette, upholstered in a plaid performance fabric. In this open concept kitchen, it was important to Hall that the cabinetry had the look of fine furniture to ease the transition from a living space to a working space.

She chose a flat cabinetry set with raised panels, in “Pearl,” topped with jewel-like lit glass above. A Glazzio glass tile backsplash adds even more luminescence, as does the replacement of a standard door with a frosted glass panel on the pantry, giving the appearance of an additional window. A stainless-steel range hood draws cooking odors away and complements the three pendants shining down on the granite countertop of the island, set on a dark-stained alder wood base. A trio of Vanguard’s stools feature easy maintenance slipcovers with charming lace-up detail, offering seating convenient for visiting with the chef. Custom metal sconces in a coral motif light the hallway leading to the guest suite.

Set in an alcove overlooking the pool deck, this intimate breakfast room introduces another set of geometric shapes to the home’s design. The anxieties of any day will melt away when one steps into this cocoon of a master bedroom. Designed to be soothing, Hall kept the color palette of pewter, silver, white, and calming gray. The fully upholstered Vanguard bed rests on a wall featuring the same octagon shapes, painted in Sherwin Williams Eider White, as those that appear in the ceiling overhead. Organic Legacy linen and custom Greek key pillows by Ryan Studio dress the bed. At the foot, a Taylor King bench features moveable bolsters. Nightstands by John Black for Vanguard were finished in Wrenn Grey, include pull-out drink trays, and hold Currey & Company porcelain lamps with Lucite bases, topped by crystal balls. The bedding area is lit by a chrome sculptural chandelier with multiple parchment shades. The adjacent seating area hosts twin chairs with oversized kidney pillows with a pattern reflecting the shape of the leather ottoman. A Lucite occasional table from InterludeHome glows with the light from the drum pendant above in the evening and from the sunlight streaming in from the pool deck during the day.

The height of elegance, the master bath’s floor and shower walls are clad in crosscut 12- by 24-inch marble in shades of silver and gray. The geometric pattern for this room is picked up by the shower floor, with laser-cut mosaic marble. The doorless glass shower’s wall actually meets the creamy stone countertop on the room’s right side. The opposite shower wall serves the freestanding rectangle Kohler tub with flared edges lit by a Hudson Valley Lucite lantern. Trough sinks are set in each countertop and pewter painted moldings add architectural interest to the wall of mirrors above. Art deco sconces of polished nickel and milk glass softly light the area. A section of the counter. acting as a makeup vanity, is served by a Vanguard bolster bench upholstered in a dot-patterned fabric.

This expansive outdoor living area had to be treated as though it were an indoor space, Hall believed. “When one enters the front door, they are led directly to this space and it had to be as warm and welcoming as any interior space,” she says. Beginning with the cypress ceiling, which is a simplified version of the living room ceiling, Hall hung custom oversize lanterns, created by Alico Metal Fabricators LLC, to illuminate the space. Oversize marble pavers underfoot tie the space together. The dining set is all extruded aluminum outdoor furniture from Ebel, with Sunbrella cushions on the chairs. The living room section boasts resin wicker chairs with cushions in cool gray and a trio of metal bunching tables with faux wood tops for weather resistance. Oversize porcelain tiles crisscrossed with a marble mosaic form the backsplash of the outdoor kitchen as well as the knee wall of the stone-topped island. A stainless-steel hood creates a focal point over the gas grill and three outdoor resin stools add extra seating.

preparing for hurricane season If you live in Florida (or anywhere on the East or Gulf Coast) you know the fears that a hurricane can bring. As we face another hurricane season, the hope, as always, is that we will have a quiet six months. However, if history shows us anything, it is always good to be prepared for the worst as the season approaches. By starting early, you’ll avoid the crowded and often chaotic stores once a hurricane watch is issued. With supply chain problems still plaguing many industries as well, make sure you stock up on the essentials early—there’s no guarantee all of these items will be available last minute any longer.

As you prepare, it’s nice to have a list of basic items you should have on hand. Water, food, first aid supplies, clothing and bedding, and special items like medicines and pet food should be considered as you prepare for hurricane season. These items are also good to have on hand in case of other emergencies. Here is a list of supplies you should have on hand to keep you, your family, and your pets safe and healthy during hurricane season.

Store water in plastic containers such as soft drink bottles.

Avoid using containers that will decompose or break, such as milk cartons or glass bottles. Typically, people need at least two quarts of water each day. Hot environments and intense physical activity can double that amount. Children, nursing mothers, and those suffering from illness will need more. Store one gallon of water per person per day. Keep at least a three day supply of water per person.

Before hurricane Harvey a few years ago, things like a signal flair and plastic sheeting might have seemed a little extreme but after seeing people trapped on their roofs for days, nothing is overkill. Make sure you have a batteryoperated radio, flashlights and extra batteries. Also having some cash or traveler’s checks on hand in case credit card machines are down in the aftermath can be a good idea. Items like a non-electric can opener, utility knife, pliers, tape, and matches in a waterproof container can all come in handy. Also consider adding more “intense” items like a signal flare, whistle, and plastic sheeting to your supply list.

food At minimum, store a three-day supply of non-perishable food.

Select foods that don’t require refrigeration, preparation or cooking, and little or no water like ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, and vegetables. Also have canned juices, staples (salt, sugar, spices, etc.), protein bars, and vitamins on hand.

With hurricane Irma in 2017, 6.3 million people were ordered to evacuate and many found stores along the way and at major evacuation destinations were out of staple items due to the sudden influx of people. With the added supply chain issues over the last couple years, it’s even more vital to stock up on things like toilet paper, towelettes, and soap.

first aid & special items While you can assemble your own kit, your can also purchase one online. This is usually cheaper and always easier. If you do want to make your own, include items like adhesive bandages, sterile dressing and gauze pads, antibacterial hand wipes or hand sanitizer, non-latex gloves, adhesive tape, anti-bacterial ointment, and cold packs. Remember family members with special requirements, such as infants and the elderly. Formula and diapers will go fast as will prescription drugs so make sure you call your doctor at the first sign a hurricane might be heading your way if you are running low.

possessions & documents You never know how long it might take to return to your house if you need to evacuate so protect your valuables and by storing them in waterproof, portable containers and by taking them with you if you leave. While you can replace documents like wills, insurance policies, deeds, passports and social security cards, it’s better to take them with you in case there is trouble with looting after the storm.

Also take an inventory of valuable household goods and save family records (birth, marriage, death certificates) that might be more difficult to replace if they get damaged.

pets The pictures of pets left behind after hurricanes is always heartbreaking. Please take your pets with you if you evacuate. Have current ID tags for every pet and securely fasten them to your pet’s collar and carry a recent photograph of your pet. Transport them in secure pet carriers and keep them on their leash or harness. Call hotels at the location you’re evacuating to—some hotels will lift their no-pet policy for disaster situations. If you can’t find a hotel, reach out to friends, family members, veterinarians or boarding kennels in the city you’ll be staying in to arrange foster care. Pack a week’s supply of food, water, medication, cat litter, etc. Do not wait until the last minute to evacuate. Rescue officials may not allow you to take your pets if you need to be rescued.

When it comes to keeping a pool clean, there are some great advances that help mitigate the chemical content in your water. The first is an ultraviolet (UV) pool system. These systems use ultraviolet light to make your pool safer, healthier, and easier to maintain by destroying pathogens that enter your water and reducing

the need for chemicals. They also eliminate the need for an algaecide, reducing chemical costs. As pool water is circulated through the wet reactor chamber of the UV system, one or more UV-C germicidal lamps expose the pool water containing bacteria, viruses, algae spores, pathogens, and microorganisms to the high intensity light waves emitted by the lamps. This makes them unable to multiply,

causing them to die off and render them harmless. UV pool systems still need some chemical sanitation to make sure your pool stays clean and clear, but there can be up to a 50-70% reduction of chemicals in many cases.

A side benefit of a UV system is their ability to reduce or eliminate mono-chloramine in the pool water. Chloramines are the byproducts of chlorination and create that odor associated with chlorinated pools. They are also affordable, with most UV systems for residential pools and spas costing between $500 and $800.

Another option that can help you reduce the chemicals in your water is ozone. A bluecolored gas, ozone is made up of three oxygen atoms that effectively kill and inactivate bacteria, parasites, and viruses. It’s also a good oxidizer, which means it can chemically destroy contaminants in the water. Because of the nature of ozone, you can’t buy it in tanks like you can with other gaseous chemicals. It must be generated on-site using an ozonator or ozone generator. These are installed in the pool’s circulation system downstream from the operating equipment. As the water passes through the ozonator, it’s sanitized by the ozone before returning to the pool. Ozone is great for a few different situations, like if you have hard water at home. Managing your swimming pool can be a headache when using chlorine or bromine, and ozone could be a great choice for you as it helps combat the hard water scale that can build up along the walls and interior pipe surfaces. Another perk to ozone is that it breaks down everything that comes its way, which is why it is such an effective way to remove odors. It will even kill mildew that tries to grow on your pipes.

Another advancement in pool technology, smart pools offer you a hassle-free pool experience at the touch of a button. There is a wide range of smart pool technologies that will help you automate your experience and allow you to keep up to date with your pool while you are out of town—a great feature for seasonal residents. One of the main tools are smartphone applications.

H E G R E AT E S T C OM P L I M E N T someone in any field can receive is repeat business, and for Pam Yates, interior designer at Robb & Stucky, she had the pleasure of helping two different homeowners design their dream retreat in this 7,000-square-foot ranch-style home. Located in

The Concession Golf Club, Yates helped the first owner create a traditional and formal interior with details like heavy drapes, gold metals, and oversized, luxurious furniture. “The original owner was from Texas and her elegant and traditional style fit with what we were seeing in design at the time,” says Yates. “It was a beautiful

home and I enjoyed the project so much, but I was happy to come in and update the interior for the new owners as well.”

Yates and former Robb & Stucky designer Richard Stembridge set about updating the home while taking advantage of the beautiful architectural details the builder had provided.

Stone-clad walls, beams, and vaulted ceiling are the backdrop to the home’s new look, one that embraces a more transitional feel. With access to Robb & Stucky’s wide range of both premade and custom furniture to choose from, Yates and Stembridge created a home filled with unique pieces that fit the proportions of the large space.

Yates also expertly updated existing items in the home when possible to create the transitional feel with hints of elevated rustic appeal. “When the original owner decided to sell, the new owners were also from out West, so many of the design elements worked for them, they just needed to be updated—like the lighting for example,” says Yates. She used a faux finish to transform the large, gold chandeliers into ones that fit with the transitional rustic motif. The new owner is a home builder himself, so it was important that the home be modernized as well.

One of the ways she and Stembridge made the home more smart was to add motorized shades.

The second time around proved to be just as successful as the first for Yates. Her familiarity with the home was a great asset to the design team and to the new clients. “The owner wanted a relaxed and casually elegant home with some modern touches and I believe we were able to deliver,” she says.

In the living room, the large fireplace is the focal point thanks to its size and the abstract painting that pulls the blue, gray, and reds of the silk-and-wool blend area rug from Exquisite Rugs. The room is furnished with a marble and stainless-steel Marge Carson cocktail table and a mix of seating options. Food just tastes better when cooked on a hot grill in the open air. Meats and veggies take on new flavors and dimensions, making everyone’s meals more enjoyable. Here are some wonderful and easy recipes for your summer grill outs.

garlic & rosemary grilled lamb chops SERVES 6 2 pounds lamb loin or rib chops thick cut 4 cloves garlic minced 1 Tbsp. fresh rosemary chopped

11/4 tsp. kosher salt 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper zest of 1 lemon 1/4 cup olive oil

Combine the garlic, rosemary, salt, pepper, lemon zest and olive oil in a cup.

Pour the seasoning over the lamb chops, making sure to flip them over to cover them completely. Cover and marinate the chops in the refrigerator for as little as 1 hour, or as long as overnight.

Preheat the grill to medium high heat. Grill the lamb chops on medium heat for 7-10 minutes, or until the internal temperature reads 135°F. Allow the lamb chops to rest, covered, for five minutes before serving.

barbecue chicken thighs SERVES 8-10

Barbecue Seasoning ¼ cup smoked paprika 2 Tbsp. light brown sugar 2 tsp. chili powder 2 tsp. garlic powder 1½ tsp. cayenne pepper Chicken and Sauce 12 skin-on, bone-in chicken thighs (about 4 lb.)

Zest and juice of 2 lemons 2½ tsp. kosher salt 5 Tbsp. barbecue seasoning, divided

1 Tbsp. vegetable oil, plus more for grill 1 onion, finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 Tbsp. brown sugar ¾ cup ketchup 2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar 2 Tbsp. unsulfured blackstrap molasses 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard 1 Tbsp. Louisiana hot sauce 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce

The seasoning blend can be made ahead of time and stored for up to a month. Whisk paprika, brown sugar, chili powder, garlic powder, and cayenne in a small bowl to combine. Makes about half a cup.

Combine chicken and lemon zest and juice in a large bowl; toss to coat. Sprinkle chicken with salt and 4 tablespoons of the seasoning blend and toss again to evenly coat. Cover and let chill for at least 2 hours and up to 12 hours.

To make the sauce, heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic and cook until tender, about 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add brown sugar and cook, stirring constantly, until sugar turns a shade darker, about 2 minutes. Add remaining 1 tablespoon of your homemade seasoning blend and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add ketchup and cook for 2 minutes until slightly darker in color. Stir in vinegar, molasses, mustard, hot sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a boil over high heat and cook for 2 minutes, string so it doesn’t burn. Let the sauce cool for 5 minutes.

Transfer to a blender and purée until smooth. Set sauce aside.

Prepare a grill for medium-high indirect heat (for a charcoal grill, bank coals on 1 side; for a gas grill, leave 1–2 burners off). Lightly oil grate. Grill chicken over direct heat, turning every minute, until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes. Move chicken over to indirect heat and cover, positioning the vent over chicken if your grill has one, turning every 5 minutes or so, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of thighs registers 140°F–145°F. This will take about 25 minutes. Uncover and continue to grill, basting with reserved sauce and turning occasionally, until the thermometer registers 165°F, about 10 minutes longer.

2 red bell peppers 2 yellow bell peppers 2 red onions 1 eggplant 2 zucchinis 2 bunches asparagus, ends trimmed 7 oz. button mushrooms 1/4 cup olive oil 1 tsp. each salt and pepper 3 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 cup parsley, chopped

Marinade ⅓ cup lemon juice ⅓ cup extra virgin olive oil 2 tsp. white sugar 2 garlic cloves, minced 1/2 tsp. each salt and pepper 1/2 tsp. dried basil 1/2 tsp. dried parsley 1/2 tsp. dried oregano 1/2 tsp. dried thyme 1/2-1 tsp. chili flakes

Place the marinade ingredients in a jar and shake well. Set aside. When cutting your vegetables, keep the pieces large enough to handle without them falling through the grill.

Pieces should be ⅓-1/2 in thick and the onion cut into wedges with the root end left intact to help keep the layers together while flipping. Halve your eggplant and cut into semicircles to keep grilling time even. Mushrooms can be left whole.

Brush grill lightly with oil, then preheat to high. Place vegetables in a very large bowl or use a big tray. Drizzle with oil, sprinkle with salt, pepper, and garlic and toss. Place on grill and cook until tender crisp with charred edges. Remove and place in a large bowl.

• Asparagus, zucchini: grill 6-8 minutes each side.

• Bell pepper, mushroom, onion: grill 6-8 min each side • Eggplant: grill 5-7 min each side. Check as you grill to make sure the middle is not too soggy.

While vegetables are still hot, place in a large bowl and toss in marinade. Set aside 10 minutes before serving, sprinkling with parsley if desired.

grilled corn with tajín SERVES 6

3 fresh corn on the cob, cut in half

1 Tbsp. Tajín seasoning

2 Tbsp. olive oil

2 Tbsp. unsalted butter

Clean the cobs of corn off the husks if needed and cut in half. Lay each cob on a large piece of aluminum foil. Drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle on the Tajin seasoning.

Roll up in the foil until all of the corn is covered. Place the foil packet on the grill over medium heat for 20 minutes turning occasionally. Be careful when unwrapping, as it will be very hot. Serve with butter and enjoy!

herb butter steaks

SERVES 2-4

2, 1lb bone-in strip steaks cut 11/2” thick (or your steak of choice) vegetable oil Seasoning 3/4 Tbsp. rock salt 11/2 tsp. whole black peppercorns 1/2 tsp. dried minced garlic 1/2 tsp. dried minced onion 1/4 tsp. fennel seeds

1/8 tsp. red chili flakes Herb Butter Big pinch steak seasoning 1 stick salted butter (1/2 cup,) softened to room temperature 1 Tbsp. finely minced fresh rosemary 1 Tbsp. finely minced fresh thyme 2 Tbsp. chopped parsley 1 garlic clove, pressed or minced

For the steak seasoning: add ingredients to a mortar and pestle or season grinder and coarsely grind. You can also add the ingredients to a heavy duty Ziplock bag, squeeze all the air out, then crush ingredients with a meat pounder, rolling pin, or heavy bottomed skillet.

For the herb butter: add ingredients to a bowl then stir with a fork to combine. Scoop herb butter onto a sheet of plastic wrap then shape into a thick log and refrigerate until firm (if needed you can freeze for 20-30 minutes.)

Trim steaks to remove large areas of fat then pat dry with a paper towel. Rub each side with oil then use steak seasoning generously, pressing it gently into steaks. Use most if not all of the seasoning.

Light half of your grill burners (or place charcoal to one side), then heat on high until the grill reaches 500°F. Add steaks to the lit half then sear on each side for one and a half minutes (adjust accordingly if your steaks are bigger or smaller) keeping the lid closed between flipping.

Transfer steaks to the unlit portion of the grill then continue cooking for 7-10 minutes with the lid closed for medium, or until they’ve reached your preferred level of doneness.

Remove and let them rest for at least 5 minutes. Top with sliced herb butter then serve.

1/2 tsp. fresh lime zest 1/4-1/2 tsp. cumin 1⁄2 tsp. dried oregano 1⁄2-1 tsp. salt 1⁄2 tsp. pepper 2 Tbsp. olive oil 2-3 Tbsp. fresh squeezed lime juice 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 lb shelled, de-veined raw shrimp

Combine the juices, spices and oil in a mixing bowl.

Add shrimp and toss to coat. Marinate at room temperature for 10 minutes.

Thread shrimp onto skewers and reserve the marinade. Place skewers on a grill over medium heat.

Cook 3-7 minutes or until shrimp turn pink, turning once and brushing with marinade once flipped.
