MEETING OF THE MINDS

W

hen a local home builder decided to construct his dream home on a spacious lot in Naples’ Pine Ridge Estates neighborhood, he knew just where to turn for new ideas and a fresh take on the project. He looked to friends of many years, Rob Herscoe and Michael Hajjar, the principals of Herscoe Hajjar Architects.

“I’ve known the builder and his wife for more than a decade and we have worked together on many successful projects, but still, I was flattered that he chose us to design the home for his family,” says Herscoe.

The homeowners knew they wanted a very modern design that adopted one of the tenets of Asian architecture—that of making the exterior very minimalistic and lacking in ornamentation so that the interior could spotlight the home’s showier aspects, like its gorgeous lake views.

“The homeowners came to the table full of ideas and yet very open to our opinions,” Herscoe says. “Since our firm is not limited by any set-instone niche style, we were very flexible and able to give them just what they wanted.” The 1.7 acre lot backs to a lovely lake and the architects focused on showcasing those views from as many rooms as possible. They also created a design that allows scads of natural light to flood the home.

“We were also interested in how the light changes throughout the day,” Herscoe explains. “The clerestory windows in the great room are one of my favorite elements. The light enters the room all day and to see it change from different vantage points is fascinating,” Taking their cue from the female half of the homeowners, a talented creative in her own right, interior designers Kim Collins and Alina Dolan of Collins Dupont Design Group brought their years of design experience to work with her to make the home everything she’d envisioned. “It was a collaborative effort from the beginning,” says Collins, the vice president of the design firm. “The homeowner had a very strong vision, was very decisive, and a great communicator.”

“We built off one another’s ideas,” added Dolan. “From hard finishes to furnishings, to bedding and even lighting, we took a team approach and successfully brought her vision to fruition. The client was wonderful to work with and we enjoyed every minute of the project.”

Herscoe and Hajjar also found the architectural design process an easy one. “Since we listened carefully to what the homeowners wanted and because they had a wealth of experience in building homes, there were very few changes from our initial drawings,” Herscoe explained. “During our design meetings, we could almost talk in shorthand. Working with them was a delightful experience—a true meeting of the minds.”

EL EVAT ED ST Y L E The homeowners wanted their home to be one-story to avoid ostentation.

The clean lines of the white stucco front are broken only by mushroomhued ceramic tiles concealing a fitness room and the master bath. “Privacy was important to them,” says Herscoe, “but also these elements add a bit of mystery to the home. Visitors aren’t quite sure what lies behind the mahogany-and-glass paneled front door.” A circular motor court leads to a side-loaded four-car garage and a trio of Zenlike stone fountains afford restful views for guests out of the large dining room window. Landscaping continues the minimalist theme, with flowering bushes accenting the home’s geometric layout and royal palms casting welcome shade.

Horizontal clerestory windows are the focal point of the airy great room and even more light enters through tall glass sliders leading to the pool deck. The homeowners wanted an open floor plan as they often entertain their grown children and friends. A casual seating group features Tomlinson Furniture wing chairs, a Hickory Chair linen chaise, and twin curved back occasional chairs by Baker Interiors. The Regina Andrew Design accent table’s rich dark wood finish is accented by an alabaster top and brass ring detail. A floating ceiling, allows for indirect cove lighting and adds architectural interest to this intimate library, the walls of which are painted in Benjamin Moore’s “Dove Wing.” Suspended from the ceiling is the clients’ own many-branched mixed metal and glass starburst chandelier. It shines down on the polished burlwood, tri-footed table, set with a stainless steel accent planter and flanked by a duo of Kravet Furniture’s high back armchairs, covered in impactful emerald green fabric.

A crown crystal chandelier, the client’s own, is suspended from the floating and lighted tray ceiling. It highlights the subtle sheen of the metallic fabric on the quartet of Bernhardt Upholstery round back chairs with nickel finished leg detail. T H E GRE AT OUT D OOR S This huge outdoor living space runs along the side of the home to maximize the lake views and vistas. Fans from Big Ass Fans cool guests below in two seating areas. Cubist forms create the first with a Sunbrella covered gray sectional, low block coffee table, and the abstract side table set on a striped accent rug. Further on are four outdoor teak chairs upholstered in an Indian print surrounding a silver drum table. Dividing the space is the outdoor kitchen. A grill stands ready for the chef and a granite-topped counter serves as both prep space and, via the high-backed stools, a place for guests to sit while dinner is prepared. A brushed aluminum dining table and chairs with teal cushions complete the welcoming space.

WATE R TI ME The geometric pool was set on the home’s south side to benefit from longer sunlit hours.

The pool features a sun shelf leading into the aqua water, accented by ultramarine glass mosaic tiles. The pool’s outer wall was created with dark gray obsidian mixed tiles and the pool border is covered in hand-painted Indian ceramics. The chaise sun lounges and the woven couch, with cerulean blue cushions, invite daytime relaxation and the elevated fire bowl lights the scene at night. Growing to Scale SMALL GARDENS WITH BIG HARVESTS

IT DOESN’T MATTER HOW MUCH SPACE YOU HAVE, you can create a garden. With most people living in either gated communities or condos, growing your own veggies might seem impossible, but there are some great options for people wanting to experiment within their own backyards and patios. One of the keys to success when you don’t have a lot of space is making the right plant choices. Compact, but productive plants take up less space, but will still provide you with the most delicious, fresh veggies you could imagine.

Many of you might have northern homes with large yards or acreage but here land is at a premium. If you are familiar with gardening, you will probably have to re-think how you garden in your Florida home. From a completely different growing season and climate to a lack of space, gardening here can come with a learning curve. Keeping things small and in containers will help you be more successful as you become more selective in what you grow.

Seed catalogs and garden stores will feature an expansive selection of vegetables, including many that are chosen specifically for their

compact nature. Small space gardens should be built around productivity and flavor as well as plants that have ornamental qualities and longevity. When working with a limited space, chances are your plants will be visible to you and your guests, so selecting plants that are pretty as well as productive will help you create a garden you love.

A great foundation to any small garden are three tried and true favorites—lettuce, basil, and tomatoes. The basis of good salads, pasta dishes, pizza, and much more, these three staples grow wonderfully in Florida and thrive in containers.

Everyone loves sweet basil, and for good reason. The aromatic leaves are great in pesto, salad dressings, pastas, and more. With over 80 varieties of basil, the “miniature” types are perfect for small-scale gardens. One variety called Pistou is a dwarf sweet basil with aromatic leaves that grow on a compact, rounded plant.

Only reaching up to about seven inches in height, it is known for its delicious and mild flavor. The small plants can be used for edging in a larger planter.

Helpful Tips EDIBLE L ANDSCAPING You’ve probably heard the phrase “grow food not grass” and it’s a good motto to adopt as someone with a small space. While grass depletes nutrients, requires a lot of water to maintain, and serves very little purpose other than looking pretty, you can add edible landscaping to your yard to make your small spaces more productive and delicious. Replace bushes with berries or ornamental grasses with lemongrass, kale, or other edible greens. Small trees can be taken out and replaced with dwarf fruiting trees.

FEEDING YOUR GARDEN If you are gardening in containers, garden boxes, and raised beds, you must pay extra attention to your soil’s nutritional needs. Plants deplete the nutrients at a quicker rate when they are in small areas since they are unable to access larger spaces pulling in nutrients from farther away. Add organic compost, top-dress soil and spray with compost tea regularly. Rotate crops by not planting the same type of plant in the same pots or beds each year. Healthy soil promotes healthy plants which give your plants a better chance of resisting pests and diseases, which can be abundant in Florida’s warm climate.

HELPFUL POLLINATORS If you are planting a small food garden on a patio, balcony, or are creating a garden for the first time in your yard, it is crucial to create a habitat that invites pollinators. Bees and birds, beetles and butterflies— there is a great variety of beneficial pollinators you will want to invite to your small garden to create the most robust and productive space possible. Mix flowers in with your vegetables or herbs to attract pollinators and add a pop of color. Florida’s native wildflowers, like wild lime, coffee, cherry, white swamp milkweed, and azalea are all great to add to your garden area and landscaping as a whole.

COMPANION PL ANTING Companion planting is a technique that helps you increase your yield and maximize your space as you grow plants under other plants or trees. Not all plants like each other however, so make sure you are putting the right plants together. There are many online resources that will show you what plants enjoy being near each other. A perfect example of this gardening style is known as the Three Sisters, a Native American method of gardening that focused on planting corn, squash, and beans together. The three crops benefit from each other, the corn provides a trellis for the beans to climb, the beans provide nitrogen for the corn and squash, and the squash helps prevent weeds from growing by blocking sunlight to the soil which helps to retain water.

Next in the classic garden trifecta is lettuce. Available in all shapes, sizes, and colors, the key to a great-looking container garden is variety.

Plant different types of lettuce to create delicious salads and visually pleasing accents. All can be grown in Florida, but leaf lettuce often works best since it’s more suited to the climate and can be harvested throughout the season. Good leaf lettuce selections for Florida include Black-seeded Simpson, Red Sails, and many Salad Bowl varieties. Lettuce typically grows from seed to salad in 45 days with the best time to plant starting in September in all areas of Florida and ending between January and March depending on how far south you are. Plan to harvest leaf-byleaf to stretch out the season.

Lastly, a Florida staple—tomatoes. Perfect in a huge variety of dishes from all different parts of the world, tomatoes are easy to grow in small gardens. Florida’s warm climate means the best time to plant tomatoes is in late winter or early spring. Since tomatoes are a warm-weather crop, resist the urge to put them in the ground until the danger of frost has passed, if you live in a part of the state where that could be an issue. Get a head start by starting seedlings indoors and then transplanting them outside or try planting tomatoes in lightweight containers, which will give you the freedom to move them to a protected location if there’s a

potential for a late frost. It’s also important that you don’t wait too long to plant your tomatoes, since they need enough time to grow and produce fruit before summer temperatures soar. For smaller gardens, growing a determinate variety, which will grow in a more compact, bush-like shape, is best. Determinate tomatoes will all ripen over a much faster period and only give you one to two harvests, so if you have slightly more room, consider trying both determinate and indeterminate varieties.

Keep in mind indeterminate tomatoes will need support from stakes or trellising. Hybrid varieties like Better Boy, Celebrity, and Amelia thrive in Florida, while heirloom varieties Cherokee Purple, Green Zebra, and Mortgage Lifter are great for people wanting a little more of a challenge as they can be less hardy than hybrids.

Tomatoes need at least four to six hours of sun per day, so you’ll need to find a sunny spot for your pots and containers. If you’re using lightweight containers, you can always move the containers around to follow the sun throughout the day. You will also need to make sure your soil is right with a pH range of 6.2 to 6.5. For container gardening this is an easy balance to find and you can use commercial potting mix from garden stores. When planting the tomatoes, make sure they are planted slightly deeper than they were in their original pots in order to encourage deeper rooting.

BOUQUETS Fresh cut flowers bring color and life into your home whether you grow them in your own garden, buy them from a flower shop, or have them delivered. Once in your home, you want them to remain fresh and vibrant. Here are some tips to help you keep your arrangements looking their best for as long as possible.

SNIP THE STEMS A well known florist trick, cutting the stems of your bouquet allows the flowers’ vascular systems in their stems to better draw up water and nutrients to feed the blooms. If you don’t cut them, air will be pulled up into the stems blocking the water. Use very sharp scissors or pruning shears to snip at least one-half inch off the bottom of the stems to be sure you’re cutting above possible air bubbles. You can also cut the stems while they are underwater to stop air bubbles from forming in the stems.

WATER WELL Once you’ve trimmed the stems, make sure you get your flowers in fresh, clean water quickly. Tap water is generally fine for the vase, unless you have a water softener. Soft water has high amounts of sodium which is not good for flowers. Distilled water also will work. Check

your arrangement daily, and add water to the vase as needed. Most cut flowers will benefit from a daily mist of water as well. Remember that bacteria is a flower killer, so wash out the vase and refill it at least every three days and trim another half-inch off the stems to keep the water flowing through the stems.

TEMPERATURE CHECK Water that’s too hot can cook the stems so make sure you use room-temperature water unless you are arranging blooms from bulbs that flower during cooler months. Anemones, daffodils, and tulips for example, do better in cooler water. The one time you can consider using warmer water is if you have unopened flowers and want to speed up the blooming process. Use warm water to help them open up more quickly but know that those flowers will also die sooner.

Beyond water temperature, general room heat is the enemy of cut flowers and will shorten their lifespan in your arrangements. Place arrangements in cool spots, away from heating ducts and vents. You can also keep flowers fresher longer by avoiding direct sunlight.

KEEP BACTERIA AT BAY Make sure you remove any plant material that sits below the waterline (other than the stems).

Any leaves and flowers you leave in the water will rot quickly, which will spread bacteria that can kill your flowers before their time.

FEED YOUR FLOWERS Your flowers might come with those little

packets that help keep flowers fresh. They contain sugar to provide a little nourishment, citric acid to keep the pH low, and acidic, which helps water move up the stems a bit faster and may reduce wilting. They also have antibacterial powder. If your arrangement didn’t include a packet of flower food or if you’ve used yours up, you can make your own.

Combine a few drops of bleach or a clear spirit like vodka or gin to help fight bacterial growth, add a few drops of clear soda or superfine sugar to feed the flowers, and then add a crushed vitamin C tablet to lower the water’s pH.

From the lines and balance of the home’s exterior to the functional layout throughout the interior, the home is a testament to what experienced teams can create. “We have worked with this client before and they are very hands-on when it comes to the designs of their home,” says John Orgren, the Naples Residential Director at MHK Architecture & Planning. “They have always been a forward-thinking couple and we have loved working with them as their homes, like this one, have set a great tone and example as we have grown as a company.”

A well known name in Florida, Colorado, and South Carolina, MHK Architecture & Planning brings a wide range of knowledge and experience to each design. “We are busy and there has been a lot of growth over the last few years, but we have been able to give our clients the time and attention they need to create homes they will love,” says Orgren. “Because of the amount of projects we’ve completed, we also bring a valuable amount of insight into what people are enjoying in their homes and what’s important to our clients. On the flip side, we can also tell someone what can be omitted as we advise and help them through the process of designing a home.”

S E T T I NG T H E TONE Known for their coastal style and attention to detail, this home offers a slightly different take on their well loved aesthetic. “The home has clean lines and less of the accents and details we are known for to keep that contemporary feel,” says Orgren. The stair tower with its floor-to-ceiling window is the most prominent feature as you approach the home and a large overhang above the entryway gives the elevation a nice presence along the street. Brackets have been used to support the roofline both visually and structurally. Stacked stone adds texture in a more contemporary way than other elements, like coral, would provide. A louver window shade over the front window provides privacy and character to the exterior. “Our team works in that tension between symmetry and asymmetry,” explains Orgren. “Setting up the anchoring center of the home and then adding interest on the flanking pieces creates appeal that keeps you looking at the home while also grounding the project.”

Inside, the attention to design continues. “The balcony overlooking the great room brings some drama and activity into the room,” says Orgren. “You can feel people moving throughout the space, so while it’s not only visually pleasing, it adds energy to the home.” The linear fireplace gives the owners design freedom and allows the TV to be placed at a watchable height. Orgren explains, “We give the fireplace and any flanking cabinetry a lot of time and attention during the design process.

It’s a focal point and you need to get the proportions right to create a beautiful feature for a great room or living room.” The cabinetry here is similar to the outside of the home and refers to historical wood working while still feeling transitional. A curved sectional provides comfortable seating and the room is decked in comforting cream tones accented by natural elements like stone, wood, and coral.

The dining room’s focal point is the great space for wine storage. Not only functional, the peg style display shelves allow the labels to create a sort of wallpaper effect that Orgren loves. “This is a really decked out wine room with everything these wine connoisseurs were after,” he says. “People don’t realize how much time and effort goes into designing a really great wine space—there are a lot of elements that need to be done right, from the size of the space to the mechanics of how the room works.” Orgren also explains that people need to decide how they want to use the room during the design process. Is this purely a storage area or will they also entertain in this space? Lower open shelves on the sides of the room provide storage for cases while not taking up too much visual space while closed cabinets and open areas for glasses offer a variety of storage options. The glass door and partition between the two rooms is a great way to connect them while keeping things chilled to the right temperature. A large dining table is perfect for dinner parties and the close proximity to the wine room and kitchen allows for easy entertaining.

COASTAL K I TC H E N Located off of the great room, the home’s kitchen features a large, chocolate brown island with an unusual banquette. “This is a really interesting way to create kitchen seating and there is plenty of room for seating and entertaining in this kitchen,” says Orgren. With an abundance of storage and counter space, the kitchen is accented by a glass and tile backsplash and beautiful ceiling details. “Not only are they visually pleasing, beams, coffers, and accent details help to organize lighting and create separation from room to room which is especially important when you are working with large, open floor plans like we see in Florida so often,” Orgren explains. Here, beams and nickel gap tongue and groove have been applied to create a reinterpretation of coastal style without being overly done.

In the ceiling, beams and nickel gap tongue and groove details have been used to create a beautiful look and tie the room to other living areas. Dark wood and wicker accents lend a coastal feel to the room.

OU T D O O R AP P E A L “People move here for the wonderful weather we have, so the outdoor living spaces require as much time and attention during the design process as the indoor areas,” says Orgren. The outdoor living room and kitchen offer a seamless connection to the inside spaces. A comfortable seating area has been arranged around the fireplace clad in with stacked stone. Mushroom-colored cabinetry surrounds a gas grill and stainless steel refrigerator. Soaring ceilings with a cupola add drama to the space.

T HO UG HT F UL DE SIG N The focal point of the master bath, the floating tub, gives the room a resort feel—something that many homeowners really want to focus on as they work with their architects and designers. “Floating tubs are romantic, while also not taking up as much space as the deck tubs of the past did,” says Orgren. The massive walkthrough shower with double rainhead and wall-mounted showerheads also leads out to a garden shower for the ultimate spa experience. The accent wall behind the tub is visually appealing while also providing storage for shower products keeping the shower clean and uncluttered. ANCIENT ART GROWING A BONSAI IN YOUR HOME

A

BEAUTIFUL ART, REFINED and studied for centuries, bonsais originated in the Chinese Empire but were popularized and cultivated best by the Japanese. By 700 AD, the Chinese started using special techniques to grow dwarf trees in containers. ‘Pun-sai’ originally was a hobby of the elite as they used native trees that were then spread throughout China as luxurious gifts. Japan adopted the art form during the Kamakura period, a time when the country was fascinated by most of China’s cultural trademarks and it was fashionable to bring those practices into their homes.

It’s thought the first pun-sai landscapes were brought from China to Japan at least 1,200 years ago with the first reference to this art form found in a lengthy work of Japanese

fiction about 1,000 years ago. The first graphic portrayals of them in Japan were made about 800 years ago as Chinese Chan Buddhism was imported into Japan and became Zen Buddhism. Finding beauty in severe austerity, Zen monks developed their tray landscapes along certain lines so that a single tree in a pot could represent the universe. Thus, the bonsai we are familiar with was born.

While this is an ancient art and gardening practice, it’s one that you can easily learn more about and do from the comfort of your own home. The practice of growing bonsai focuses on long-term cultivation and shaping of one or more small trees grown in a container. The practice is sometimes confused with dwarfing, which uses selective breeding or genetic engineering to create dwarf trees. Bonsai

does not require genetically altered plants but uses cultivation techniques like pruning, root reduction, potting, defoliation, and grafting to produce small trees that mimic the shape and style of mature, full-size trees. Bonsais are created from a large variety of perennial and woody trees so there is an option that will work for your home both inside and out.

You can purchase your own bonsai. They range in price from around $50 for one very small tree to over a million dollars for large specimens that have been cultivated for centuries. You can also grow your own, a fun process that lets you shape the tree from the beginning. Whether you buy or plant your own tree, the first step is to make sure you choose a species that is suited for the climate in your area. You will also need to decide on an indoor

or outdoor tree as that will have a big impact on your selection. Growing bonsai indoors will limit your options to subtropical trees.

The most common, and the easiest to care for, is the Ficus bonsai. The Ficus is tolerant of low humidity and is very resilient, making it an excellent choice for beginners. Other popular indoor bonsai include the Dwarf Jade, Fukien Tea, Hawaiian Umbrella, and Sweet Plum.

If you are growing a bonsai outdoors, you will have more options but choosing an indigenous tree will always be the safest bet. Some classic outdoor options for Subtropical or Mediterranean climates are Olive, Pomegranate, Fuchsia, Chinese Elm, Mulberry, Cork Oak, and Privet. The Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) and Trident Maple (Acer buergerianum) are also options, but only in areas where the winters are cool enough to allow the tree to go into winter dormancy.

Hackberry, Japanese Black Pine, Bald Cypress and some Mediterranean Juniper species can also thrive in a Subtropical or Mediterranean climate. If you are growing one outside, make sure they are protected from intense sunlight or the occasional freezing temperatures we get in parts of Florida. Once you’ve identified the best tree species for you, there are several possible cultivation techniques.

As stated before, there is a wide range of ready-made bonsai trees available in online stores around the country and even the world. You can choose from a variety of tree species in many shapes and sizes with the older ones coming with high price tags. A more economical approach is to purchase prebonsai or nursery stock, which is a great way to achieve quick results.

If you decide not to purchase a tree online or from a nursery, you can always grow one From seed. This can be a little tricky, but there are great online resources and many cities have clubs where bonsai enthusiasts are more than happy to help you get started. One of the things to keep in mind when planting a tree from seed is stratification, especially if you’re planting seeds from a different climate.

Stratification is the process of creating the natural environment and conditions each seed needs in order to germinate. Like certain f lower bulbs, seeds of many tree-species are programmed to survive through winter and germinate in early spring and will need that cold shot of air to create the right germination

environments. Subtropical and tropical trees need the soil to be warmer and need to be monitored to ensure the temperature doesn’t dip below a certain temperature. For beginners, this process may be too much, so going back to the idea of picking trees that work for your environment becomes even more important if you are growing your tree from seed. Do keep in mind that it will be between 3-5 years before you can begin to shape a young tree so this is a long-term commitment.

Now that you’ve bought a tree or grown one that is now big enough, it’s time to shape and style it. This is where growing bonsai becomes fun and creative, but also presents the most challenging aspect of this art form. Mastering the techniques it takes to really refine pruning and wiring can take years, but some basics can be learned quite easily.

“Pruning is a crucial practice used to shape trees and keep them miniature. The goal is to create a Bonsai that accurately replicates a miniature version of a full-scale tree in its natural environment.” They say generally the best time to prune your tree is during spring and suggest buying a good pair of concave cutters for pruning thicker branches. These create a hollow wound that heals much better than those made by standard cutters. As you begin to prune, it’s a good idea to take a look at some online videos or bonsai progressions examples. You can also ask for help from local experts. As you cut, keep in mind some of these general instances in which a branch should be removed.

Wiring can be applied year-round, but make sure to remove the wire before it starts digging into branches as they grow thicker.

WAT E R I NG Watering a bonsai depends on a wide range of factors like tree species, pot size, soil-mixture, and climate. Because they are usually planted in such small pots, they tend to dry up fairly quickly, so it’s important to water your bonsai regularly but over-watering can result in rootrot, one of the leading causes of death for most bonsai. Choosing the right soil mixture for your tree and re-potting regularly is crucial to its health as well. Bonsaiempire.com says, “Most bonsai need to be repotted every two years to make sure the trees don’t become pot-bound, which makes it harder to soak up and store water. An important rule for

watering is to keep a close eye on your tree and soil, and water when necessary, rather than watering once a day, or on a schedule.

PL AC E M E N T Placing an outdoor tree inside or inside tree outside will result in a dead bonsai, so before purchasing check that you are buying the right tree for the environment you wish to place it in. Subtropical trees will do great indoors, but remember that Florida is a unique growing climate. The light and humidity means that some subtropical bonsais will thrive outdoors.

As always, if you are interested in an outdoor tree, it’s best to choose one that is native to your environment.

F E RT I L I Z AT ION Besides watering and repotting, fertilization is another important tool in your tree-growing arsenal. Small pots limit water and nutrient retention so fertilizing regularly in the tree’s growing season is key to make sure your tree stays healthy and thrives. It is important to choose the right fertilizer for your bonsai

plants and apply the right quantities. For outdoor bonsai, experts recommend changing the nitrogen content throughout the year with a relatively high nitrogen content in Spring, a more balanced fertilizer in Summer, and a low nitrogen fertilizer for Autumn.

Trees kept indoors don’t experience seasonal changes, so their needs differ from those outside as they grow year-round and need to be fertilized consistently. For indoor bonsai, experts recommend a balanced liquid fertilizer, so make sure you follow the guidelines as stated on the product packaging.

Flowering bonsai trees do tend to like a more phosphorus-heavy fertilizer as it encourages beautiful blooms. You should also use a fertilizer with a lower nitrogen content (or even reduce the amount of fertilizer used) for older or more mature bonsai. Buying from an online bonsai store will ensure you find the right kind of fertilizer to promote growth.

POTS A large part of practicing bonsai is being able to spot the right pot. Sometimes a challenge for beginners, here is some basic guidance for you to consider as you pick your pot.

T H E GE N DE R The first thing you must do is decide if your tree is masculine or feminine. Most trees are a mix of both and the question is which is the dominant. This is perhaps the most important rule in choosing a pot, so consider the attributes that can help you along the way. Curves, grace, smooth bark, and sparse branches are considered feminine while strength, old bark or rough bark, deadwood, a thick trunk, and dense branches are considered masculine.

SI Z E According to bonsai4me.com, “The correct pot dimensions can be achieved using some basic rules according to the dimensions of the tree itself. The general rule of thumb is that the pot’s depth should be equal to the diameter of the trunk just above soil level. For oval or rectangular pots, the length of the pot should be two-thirds the height of the tree. For round pots, the diameter of the pot should be onethird the height of the tree. For trees with especially wide canopies, a wider pot can be necessary and this can be compensated by using a slightly more shallow pot. Equally, a tree with a very thick trunk (in comparison with the height of the tree) may suit a slightly deeper but narrower pot.”

DE SIGN A N D SH A PE The pot’s design and shape should match the degree of masculinity or femininity of your tree. The goal is to have a pot that is harmonious with the tree itself. When selecting a design and shape, ask yourself if the pot should be concave, convex, angular, round, oval, rectangular. Then to adjust the degree of feminine or masculine, look at the texture, feet, glaze, and decor or pattern. A simple search online will give you a great feel for the kind of pots available and this is a fun way to personalize your tree.

IT’S NO SECRET, we love our pets. From feline friends to perfect pooches, we go out of our way to make sure our pets are well cared for and are able to live their best lives in and out of our homes. One way we do that is by choosing homes with yards so our pets, especially dogs, can have room to run. Once you’ve moved in, it’s time to make sure your yard is an enjoyable and safe place for you and your pets. Here are some ideas that can help you as you create a beautiful outdoor space that’s pet friendly.

DO Make sure there are places for your dog to run when possible.

Dogs love to run either by themselves or with you, so giving them an area with a soft grassy surface is a great idea. Also, make sure there is enough room for them to turn around without bumping into planters or trees.

Use paths to direct your pet around your landscape. While they won’t keep a tenacious dog out of your garden and landscaping, most pups will prefer to stay on the path and it will help you keep your backyard looking fresh.

Consider using low borders and raised beds for planting areas.

They can act as a deterrent as your dog is learning where they can and can’t play.

Protect tender plants by creating densely planted areas. Use hardy shrubs and perennials to shield delicate, vulnerable plants.

DON’T Pick plants that are poisonous. You can take a look at the University of Florida’s Gardening Solutions website for a list of dangerous plants, so you know what to avoid when landscaping. Professional designers should be able to help you out as well. Also keep in mind things like thorns or palms with sharp edges. While they might not be poisonous, they can still lead to a vet visit if your dog steps on or ingests them.

Leave your compost uncovered. While we love the idea of people turning kitchen waste into soil, your pet can become quite ill if they eat the rotting food. If your dog will be able to access your composting area, make sure you are using covered bins.

Forget about the potentially harmful bugs in your yard, like ticks and mosquitos. You can reduce tick populations by removing leaf litter and keeping grass mowed to the recommended height. To keep mosquito populations down, check your landscape for areas of standing water, flush out bromeliad plants, and clean and change the water in bird baths. Doing these mosquito-maintenance checks weekly are important mitigation tactics.

Buy heavier pots or larger plants when adding to your landscape.

Larger plants have a fighting chance against curious pups who want to explore the new addition and heavier pots are hard to knock over if you have a dog who likes to jump up on things.

Forget to check the labels for any fertilizers, pesticides, or any other chemicals you might use in your landscape. Pet-friendly fertilizers and pesticides are often labeled so pay attention to the container.

Pick mulch that’s comfortable for you and your dog. It’s also a good idea to find one that isn’t going to get stuck in their coat and dragged inside. Small cedar chips are gentle on the body while being heavy enough to fall off fur.

Forget to make sure your gates are secured after your lawn care team is done. There is nothing worse than losing your pet, so double check all fences and gates to make sure they are secured before letting out your furry friends.

Make sure you pick up yard and garden tools and store them in a place your dog can’t access. Check your yard periodically for sharp objects or plastics that may have blown in and can act as choking hazards.

Leave your pets outside unsupervised. The weather can change quickly in Florida, so make sure you are watching your dog or can get back into the house quickly if needed. There are also a variety of predators in Florida from coyotes and bears to hawks and eagles so small dogs (and cats) should be monitored so they aren’t swooped up by a hungry wild animal.

Have a place to dispose of pet waste and stick to a cleaning schedule to keep your yard nice and usable for both you and your dog.

Consider adding a washing area with pavers and a hose by your back door so you can easily wash your dogs feet off if they get muddy during the rainy season.

Let your pet overheat. The summer and fall (and sometimes spring) are very hot in Florida, so make sure you give your dog access to water and shade if they will be spending a lot of time outside with you and monitor their body language to ensure they aren’t overheating as they play.

PET-FRIENDLY PLANTS

CREPE MYRTLE Crepe Myrtle trees need plenty of sun, so choose a bright sunny spot for your planting. They are ideal for those hot, dry places where other plants do not thrive, so take advantage of that and use them in places that can be hard to fill.

JASMINE Star jasmine can be planted throughout Florida and prefers well-drained locations that receive full or partial sun. Plants grown in full sun will produce the most flowers. Be sure to provide plants with adequate space, since vines can grow twenty feet or more if left unpruned. Star jasmine does respond well to pruning and can even be shaped as a small hedge or espalier. It is relatively pest-free and drought-resistant, making it a great plant for many Southern landscapes.

TICKSEED An American native, tickseed (Coreopsis spp.) features 1- to 3-foot tall mounding plants covered with daisy-like blooms in spring to fall.

Good in hardiness zones 4 through 10, these flowers come in shades of yellow, orange, pink and purple. These pretty plants are pet safe and also attract beneficial insects and animals like butterflies and hummingbirds.

BANANA TREES With 70 species there is likely one variety that you will love and in addition to being a beautiful, tropical landscape option, you will get some delicious fruit. In general, banana plants should be planted in full sun for best growth and fruit production. However, banana plants do tolerate light shade. Banana plants are not flood-tolerant and in areas where the water table is high and/or frequent soil saturation or very brief flooding occurs, planting on beds is recommended.

herby inspiration Herbs are some of the easiest things to grow at home. They do well in pots, most are tolerant to the Florida heat, and many don’t need a lot of water or attention, making them a great option for people looking for fun but easy home hobbies. And when you’re done, you have delicious herbs that can be used to flavor all your culinary endeavors. Here are some fun recipes for you to try once you’re harvested your homegrown (or store bought) herbs.

rosemary focaccia bread 1¾ cups warm water, 105° to 115°F

1 tablespoon sea salt

1 (¼-ounce) package active dry yeast, (2¼ teaspoons)

½ cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing

1 tablespoon cane sugar 3½ cups allpurpose flour, plus more for kneading 1½ cups whole wheat flour

1 bulb roasted garlic 2 tablespoons chopped rosemary ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

In a medium bowl, stir together the water, yeast, and sugar. Set aside for 5 minutes, until the yeast is foamy. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment, place the flours, salt, ¼ cup of the olive oil, and the yeast mixture and mix on medium speed until the dough forms a ball around the hook, 5 to 6 minutes.

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead several times, sprinkling with more flour, as needed, and form into a ball. Brush a large bowl with olive oil, and place the dough inside. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside to rise until doubled in size, 40 to 50 minutes.

Coat a 10 by 15-inch rimmed baking sheet with the remaining ¼ cup olive oil. Punch the dough down, transfer to a lightly floured surface, and knead several times. Place the dough in the pan and press to spread it out to the pan’s edges. Flip the dough over and spread it to the edges again. Make indentations with your fingers, every few inches apart, all over the dough. Cover the baking sheet with plastic wrap and allow the dough to rise until it has doubled in size, about 40 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Remove the plastic wrap. Cut the roasted garlic cloves in half and push them into the surface of the dough. Sprinkle with the rosemary, and red pepper flakes (if using), and bake for 20 minutes, until golden brown. Serves 8 to 10.

Add water, salt, zest, then simmer and bring to a rolling boil. Cover and lower the heat to low and maintain a very low simmer. Cook undisturbed per package instructions, then remove from heat and let sit for 10 minutes.

Fluff the rice with a fork and stir in lime juice and cilantro: Transfer the rice to a serving bowl. Pour lime juice over the rice and toss with chopped cilantro. Serves 4 to 6.

tzatziki sauce ½ cup finely grated cucumber

1 garlic clove, grated

1 cup thick whole milk Greek yogurt

¼ teaspoon sea salt

1 tablespoon lemon juice ½ tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon chopped dill 1 tablespoon chopped mint, optional

Place the cucumber on a towel and gently squeeze out the excess water. In a medium bowl, combine the cucumber, yogurt, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, salt, dill, and mint, if using. Chill until ready to use.

classic mint julep 3 fresh mint leaves 1 tablespoon simple syrup Crushed ice 21/2 ounces bourbon 1 fresh mint sprig

Place mint leaves and simple syrup in a chilled julep cup.

Gently press leaves against the cup with the back of a spoon to release flavors. Pack cup tightly with crushed ice; pour bourbon over ice.

Garnish with mint sprig and serve immediately.

parsley & chive herb butter 1/2 cup good quality butter, unsalted 2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley 1 tablespoon fresh chopped chives 2 tablespoons lemon juice freshly squeezed sea salt and freshly ground pepper

Allow the butter to soften. Mix the parsley and chives together and then stir them into the softened butter. Slowly add the lemon juice, stirring constantly. Mix in sea salt and pepper to suit your taste.

blueberry lavender muffins For the muffins:

1 large egg

For the crumb topping:

5 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 ½ teaspoons baking powder

½ cup all-purpose flour

½ cup sugar

¼ teaspoon baking soda

2½ tablespoons light brown sugar

½ teaspoon dried lavender buds

¼ teaspoon fine sea or table salt

½ teaspoon baking powder

Finely grated zest from ½ a lemon

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

Pinch of salt

1 ¼ to 1 ½ cups blueberries

3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

¾ cup plain unsweetened yogurt or sour cream

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line 9 muffin cups with paper or foil liners or spray 2 muffin tins with cooking spray.

In a medium bowl, combine the crumb topping ingredients - flour with the brown sugar, granulated sugar, baking powder and salt. Stir in the melted butter, then pinch the mixture until it forms pea-size clumps and set aside. Add more flour if needed to achieve a crumb texture and then set aside.

On a cutting board chop up the dried lavender. Add to the sugar, and use your clean and dry hands to work the lavender into the sugar to infuse it and break down the lavender further.

Melt butter in a large bowl and whisk in the sugar, lavender mixture, lemon zest, yogurt, and egg until smooth. Then whisk in baking powder, baking soda and salt until fully combined.

If using frozen berries, lightly dust or toss them in some all purpose flour (this will help stop them from sinking to the bottom of the pan) and then gently fold the remaining 1½ cup of allpurpose flour and the berries into the batter. Batter will be very thick, like cookie dough. Divide between prepared muffin cups and sprinkle each generously with crumb topping.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the tops are golden and a tester inserted into the muffins comes out clean. Remove and let cool in the pan for 10 minutes then the rest of the way on a cooling rack.
