grass may look lush in winter, but it contains little goodness for your horse’s diet
Feed for winter health
Make sure your horse is getting the right food to keep him ft, but calm, in the cold months
T
he winter months are a true test of the dedication of horse owners as we spend more time battling poached gateways, dealing with frozen taps and mucking out, leaving us less time for riding. Believe it or not, the UK actually has a relatively narrow temperature range compared to other countries around the world. Native ponies who live a nearly natural life with vast acres to roam over can usually gain sufficient nutrition on top of using up their fat stores to survive the colder months quite happily. However our domesticated horses and ponies may be confned to the stable or in squelchy mud paddocks for the winter, so what are the implications for them? Not surprisingly, the nutritional value of grass declines in winter. In spring, young grass plants have a greater proportion of leaf and this is where nutrients such as protein and minerals are found. As the year progresses, the amount of leaf declines while fbre and indigestible materials increase which means your horse 4 your horse wINTer care guIde 2013
gets less out of their pasture. Individuals such as youngstock and veterans are less efficient at digesting fbre, putting them at greater risk of losing weight.
Weight loss For many horses and ponies, losing weight in winter is not a great threat to their health, as if they keep piling on the pounds, the risk of laminitis would be greatly increased. Winter presents the ideal opportunity to promote some weight loss. Don’t over-rug and don’t be tempted to over-feed – just because we want to eat crumpets dripping in butter in front of a fre doesn’t mean our horses need comfort food too! Fibre is the horse’s central heating system - heat is produced as fbre is fermented in the digestive system – so the best way to keep your good doer warm and toasty is to feed plenty of low-calorie fbre such as Hi-Fi Lite or Hi-Fi Good Doer.
thirsty work Winter grass provides your horse with less nutrients
Conserved forages such as hay and haylage, by their very nature contain much less moisture than fresh grass, as grass has to be dried to conserve it! Pasture contains around 80% water whereas hay is only w w w.you r hor se .co.u k

around 15%. Research has also shown that in colder weather horses tend to drink between 6% to 14% less which, combined with the use of conserved forages, results in a considerable reduction in water intake. This can increase the risk of colic and, for horses still in work, can result in problems associated with dehydration such as compromised performance, early onset of fatigue and muscle issues.
Keep him hydrated Adding soaked feeds to your horse’s ration such as Dengie Alfa-Beet or sugar beet can increase moisture intake and counteract some of the decrease in water intake that can occur in winter. Making warm water available for stabled horses and even favouring the water can encourage them to drink more.
Winter feeding tiPs Use fbre and oil as energy sources to avoid over-excitable behaviour l Regularly monitor weight and condition to ensure you’re not over-feeding l Make changes to the diet gradually to avoid digestive upsets l Use a variety of fbre types in the stable to allow the horse to carry out browsing behaviour l Fibre is the horse’s central heating system as heat is produced as it is fermented in the digestive system – keep your horse warm by feeding lots of fbre l
w w w.you r hor se .co.u k
Chill out in winter Colder weather can put your horse on his toes, particularly if he’s just been clipped and spending more time in the stable. Fibre and oil are known to provide slow release energy, but does that actually result in calmer behaviour in the horse? A study carried out by Louise Bulmer and Dr Jo-Anne Murray at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Medicine, part of the University of Edinburgh, investigated the efects of using fbre and starch-based feeds on behaviour. The diets supplied the same levels of energy, one used alfalfa – Alfa-A Molasses Free with a starch level of 2% – and the other included a cereal mix. “It was important that the cereal-based diet was a feed commonly used in the UK and not heavily loaded with oats for example,” commented Louise, “otherwise no one would have felt the trial was fair or realistic.” The feed selected was therefore an oat-free mix with around 20% starch, typical of many of the mixes used to promote or maintain weight in the winter months. The horse’s reactivity was then recorded during handling tests. Each horse was asked to approach and move through a curtain of plastic strips and, in a novel test, were let loose individually in an indoor school where there was a feed bucket positioned 1m in front of a speaker playing white noise (see pictures above). These are established tests that have been used by other researchers in several published trials. The horses also wore heart monitors so that some physiological measurements could be taken alongside assessments of behaviour. The results showed that horses on the starch diets were more reactive to new situations and equipment and had higher heart rates than horses fed on fbre diets. This suggests that in winter months, fbre diets such as Dengie Alfa-A Oil, are the ideal way to try and avoid over-excitable behaviour as well as having health benefts.
Many calls to the Dengie feedline in autumn are from owners of older horses who look well all summer but lose weight in winter. This suggests they’re not coping well with the reduced digestibility of hay or haylage compared to pasture. For these horses and ponies, it’s important to use soft, leafy hays or haylage which will be more digestible. Adding live yeast to the feed, such as in Dengie Digestive Health supplement, should improve fbre digestion and help older horses to get more out of their forage. Older horses can struggle to chew long length forages if their teeth are loose or missing. In these cases, short chopped fbres such as Hi-Fi Senior can be used instead. The shorter chop length should be easier to chew and will probably be more digestible, depending on the fbres used. They can be fed on a weight-for-weight basis – simply feed the same weight of short chop as you would hay.

Keep your horse warm and dry whatever the weather in the Rambo Supreme Vari-Layer
Get your rugging right Make sure your horse has the ideal rug to protect him from the cold and wet this winter
C
hoosing the right rug for your horse is one of those areas of horse care that can generate a lot of debate. Is there such a thing as over-rugging? Should we leave our horses out over winter without a rug? What sort of rug should we use in the changeable summer? Everyone has an opinion, and so much depends on the specifc needs of your horse and where you live. 6 your horse WINTer care guIde 2013
With a harsh and freezing winter predicted to begin as soon as November, one thing is for certain: your horse will defnitely beneft from a rug as soon as temperatures start to fall, whether it’s just a lightweight, waterproof and breathable Amigo to keep the rain and snow of, or a top of the range heavyweight Rambo to keep your horse toasty through cold sub-zero nights.
A good quality winter rug can seem like an extravagance, but in the long term, it’s an investment that will keep your horse warm and dry through many long winters and ensure your peace of mind when you hear the rain on the roof at night, or wake up to a white winter yard. If your horse spends a lot of time outdoors, invest in a good quality waterproof and breathable turnout rug such as one from W W W.you r hor se .co.u k
ADVERTISING FEATURE WINTER RUGS
Wintering without a rug is no problem
The Amigo Bravo 12 will give your horse complete freedom
The Rambo Original
Your horse will enjoy being out in the snow in his Rambo Duo
the Horseware Rambo range. Horses who spend most of the winter in the feld put their rugs through extreme testing as they gallop, roll, play and enjoy their time out, and they need a rug that will keep them warm, dry and protected. Turnouts such as the heavy-duty Horseware Rambo Optimo or the Horseware Rambo Supreme with Vari-Layer are ideal for horses who live out. Rambo rugs are made from ballistic nylon, the toughest fabric on the market, so you can be sure your Rambo rug will keep your horse warm, dry and protected through the long winter months. Rambo rugs are built to last up to 10 years and each of them comes with a three-year waterproof guarantee, and a lifetime guarantee on the stainless steel buckles and clips. They’re flled with thermobonded fbrefll which resists compression and keeps warm air trapped inside the rug to insulate your horse. It means your rug will last longer too, because the fll stays fuller for longer. W W W.you r hor se .co.u k
All Rambo rugs have a built-in safety surcingle system to quickly release surcingles under extreme pressure. If your horse’s rug gets caught on anything, be it a fence or his legs, it’s important that the surcingle straps give way to prevent your horse from getting hurt. Safety surcingles come with spare attachement loops, so that if it does break you can replace it yourself without having to send it away to be mended. For horses who are out for only part of the day you can opt for a turnout rug such as the Horseware Amigo Bravo 12. It’s waterproof and breathable and made from durable 1200 denier polyester so will stand up to the rigours of a day in the feld. Amigo turnouts are available in light, medium and heavyweight.
In the depths of winter, mud, rain and wet conditions can cause havoc with your horses’ feet and coat. However, if your horse is happy to stay out in his woolly winter coat, there is now help at hand to keep his coat and skin healthy, and help beat the winter nasties of rain scald, mud fever and thrush – Hypocare. Hypocare contains hypochlorous acid which works naturally with the body to rapidly destroy pathogens associated with bacterial, viral and fungal infections. It can also be used to efectively clean and flush wounds, as well as treating common conditions such as mud fever, thrush, ringworm, and sweet-itch. Using Hypocare on these conditions will help to speed up the healing process and encourage rapid tissue regeneration by destroying the bioflm (protective barrier of fungal and bacterial pathogens) on the afected area. Scab removal may be a painful procedure for your horse, but as Hypocare is skin pH neutral it won’t sting and will soften any scabs to aid easier removal. If your horse does contract mud fever, thrush or rain scald, he should be kept in a dry environment, isolated from unafected animals while he’s being treated. It is important to practise good hand hygiene and to disinfect rugs and brushes to prevent the spread of the organism from afected areas to new regions or to other horses. Hypocare is up to 300 times more efective at destroying pathogens than bleach and yet is kind to healthy tissue and has a naturally non-sensitising skin neutral pH. It can be used on any mammal and is safe if ingested. Because it doesn’t sting it’s perfect for sensitive, nervous or young animals.

Base layers work by wicking excess moisture from your skin, and letting it evaporate. The result is you maintain your optimum temperature while staying cool and dry, so you can focus on what you and your horse are doing. BodyBase™ has been designed by Airowear specifcally with the rider in mind. It’s a multi-functional baselayer that incorporates moisture management with technological fabric to help you perform at your best, whatever your level. BodyBase™’s technical synthetic fabric evaporates moisture from your body at a much faster rate than conventional baselayers that are made with natural fbres such as cotton, as these can’t achieve the same rate of absorbency. This technological fabric adds to your riding comfort as it stretches as you move, providing greater fexibility and comfort.
