Salcombe

A tranquil winter’s retreat

A

s the winter months begin to take their chilling grip many boat owners opt to winterise their boats for the colder months ahead, with some putting their boats ashore in boat yards or in dry stacks offered by their marinas. Some however continue to boat, taking full advantage of the quieter unspoilt spots across our rugged coastline. The winter months offer a contrast to the hustle and bustle of the summer season with visiting yachts, tourists and locals all taking to the water. A fresh icy stillness offers the sounds of nature at its finest, undisturbed and elegantly tranquil in their sleepy months, the UK waters have a more mysterious exploratory calling to them. An all-year-round favourite spot for me is Salcombe. Whilst the harbour can be extremely busy through the high season, with the need to cautiously navigate past

other vessels. The winter months will see this friendly, welcoming safe haven set in one of the most beautiful locations in the southwest, tire and come to rest, offering undisturbed waters. Solitude escapism of peace and reflection for the winter boater. Salcombe harbour reaches just south of the Bar, a sandbar stretching across the entrance of the ria all the way up to Kingsbridge. With its high-water quality and peaceful surroundings, the SalcombeKingsbridge estuary is unusually rich. A relatively small water catchment area without a river, it is dominated by the tidal waters from the coast, offering unusually sheltered marine conditions that support a rich diversity of habitats for marine life. Seagrass jungles, kelp forests, coral and sponge gardens can all be found amongst this area of outstanding natural beauty., Be sure to keep an eye out for grey seals,

kingfishers, otters or even dolphins when visiting as they too can often be found taking shelter alongside visiting mariners. WINTER WARMERS Although many tourists and visiting yachts have put days on the water at Salcombe behind them until next season. The many shops, restaurants, cafes, beaches and attractions that line the small winded streets, alleys and water’s edge of the quaint seaside town remain open and ready to welcome those non-fair-weather boaters amongst us. The winter season really is the perfect time to wrap up warm and go exploring. It is worth noting that if you are looking to go to and from ashore during your visit, a small tender is a useful commodity when visiting during the winter months. Although there is a seasonal water taxi service, this

NAVIGATIONAL TIPS The harbour lies between Bolt Head to the west and Prawle Point to the east. Salcombe’s Bar, made famous in Tennyson’s “Crossing of the Bar”, stretches south westerly across the entrance from Limebury Point on the east side. This sand bar has a least depth of 0.5 metres LAT and should not be negotiated on an ebb tide with strong onshore winds or swell. The entrance leading line (000°T) is marked by a red and white striped pole with red topmark on the Poundstone Rock, with a second beacon behind it on Sandhill Point, which is white with a horizontally striped red and white diamond topmark. The rear beacon displays a Directional Flashing light WRG.2s, of which the white sector 357°-002°T shows the leading line. Once Blackstone Rock is abeam to starboard, the main fairway course of 042°T can be set, marked by transit lights near to Scoble Point. The navigable channel through the turn from 000 T to 045 T is marked by six lateral buoys. Three port hand buoys at Bass Rock, Poundstone and Castle with FL.R.5s lights and three starboard hand buoys at Wolf Rock, Blackstone South and Blackstone North with FL.G.5s lights. Visiting yachtsmen are encouraged to obtain navigational information available from official publications e.g. Admiralty Pilot and Charts or one of the many yachtsmen’s pilots, guides or almanacs available. service is reduced throughout the winter to just four times per day. This service will cover the South Pool Lake, The Bag and East Portlemouth moorings and floating pontoons. When one thinks of Salcombe, images of sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and bustling summer crowds often come to mind. However, Salcombe’s charm extends far beyond the summer months. Nestled on the stunning Devon coastline, this picturesque town offers a unique and delightful experience during the winter, making it an ideal destination for those seeking tranquillity and relaxation.

Despite the chilly weather, Salcombe has an undeniable appeal during the winter months. The absence of the summer crowds creates a peaceful and serene atmosphere that allows visitors to truly appreciate the town’s natural beauty. Whether you choose to explore the idyllic coastal paths, wander through the quaint streets, or enjoy a leisurely stroll along the beach, the winter in Salcombe provides a soothing escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. While the weather may not be ideal for swimming or sunbathing, there are still plenty of things to see and do in Salcombe during the winter. The area offers a multitude of walking trails that showcase the

breathtaking landscapes and panoramic views. From the stunning South West Coast Path to the picturesque Salcombe Estuary, there is no shortage of aweinspiring sights to be discovered. Don’t forget to pack your camera; the winter light gives the scenery a magical quality that is simply enchanting. The winter season is a great time to fasten off your own mooring lines and take advantage of a guided boat tour. While the summer sees a hive of activity on the water, winter brings a more serene and peaceful experience. Exploring Salcombe’s waters during this time of year offers a unique perspective on the town’s natural beauty. So, wrap up warm, hop onboard one of the many tour boats and prepare to be captivated by the uninterrupted coastal vistas.

CELEBRITY RESIDENTS Aside from the natural wonders, Salcombe has its fair share of celebrity residents, which only adds to the town’s allure during the winter. Many famous actors, singers, and artists find solace in the serene surroundings of Salcombe, seeking respite from the prying eyes of the paparazzi. A winter visit to Salcombe might just bring you face to face with a familiar face, as you cozy up in a local pub or enjoy a delicious meal in one of the town’s renowned restaurants. FANTASTIC FOOD Speaking of food, Salcombe is a treasure trove for gastronomy enthusiasts. Despite the quieter winter months, visitors can still enjoy a plethora of culinary delights. From freshly caught seafood to traditional

Devonshire fare, the local restaurants and cafes continue to serve up delectable dishes even in the colder season. Soak up the town’s relaxed atmosphere as you sample mouthwatering cuisine, perhaps complemented by a glass of locally produced wine or cider. If you’re in need of a little retail therapy, Salcombe’s boutiques and shops await with open arms. From trendy fashion boutiques to charming art galleries, there is something for everyone. Take your time browsing through the eclectic mix of independent stores, which offer unique and handmade products that are perfect for finding that special gift or memento. As the sun sets over the Salcombe estuary, winter truly showcases the town’s ethereal beauty. Picture-perfect views

of the coastline and harbour are painted with hues of pink and orange, creating a backdrop that is simply magical. Cosying up in one of the town’s charming accommodations, perhaps with a crackling fire and a warm beverage, is the ultimate way to immerse yourself in the tranquillity of Salcombe during the winter. So, if you’re seeking a break from the ordinary and a chance to reconnect with nature, consider visiting Salcombe during the winter months. With its breathtaking landscapes, peaceful atmosphere, and a touch of celebrity allure, this charming town offers a winter retreat like no other. Escape the crowds, embrace the tranquillity, and discover a side of Salcombe that few get to experience.

Waterfront Living at Upton Lake experience a different style of floating home

F

or those who have spent a significant portion of their lives navigating the seas, the thought of parting with their beloved boats can be a challenging one. However, the prospect of living in a floating home at Upton Lake provides the perfect solution; a unique lifestyle that allows individuals to continue cherishing their boating experiences while enjoying the comforts of home. A concept often found in parts of Europe in areas adorned by pretty canals, lakes and rivers, floating homes find the ideal balance between living among rarely found blue and green spaces and the practicalities of simpler living and location proximity to loved ones. Avid boaters, both current and former, have discovered the myriad benefits of making their residence on the water; Upton Lake is one such place where this dream becomes a reality. Your

cherished boat can be close-by in the neighbouring Upton Marina, ready for impromptu adventures or peaceful, leisurely cruises at your convenience. Alternatively, you may choose to hang up your skipper’s hat and simply sit back and enjoy the lakeside lifestyle every day! One of the most appealing aspects of living in a floating home is the transition from the unpredictable open seas to the serene and calm inland waterways. Many boaters, after years of facing the elements on open waters, seek the tranquility and safety of a marina or inland waterway setting. Upton Lake offers the perfect place for this transition, providing a peaceful and sheltered environment while still maintaining access to the open sea for those occasional bursts of adventure. It is the ideal compromise for those who love the water but seek the comforts of a calmer environment.

COMBINING THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS AT UPTON LAKE & MARINA Waterfront Living on Upton Lake is a brand-new floating home community, set to house a unique development of 28 floating homes on completion. Perfectly positioned in the centre of nature, with the convenience of towns and cities close by, this practical yet serene proposition will make a full-time residence, second-home getaway or investment opportunity that stands out from any other. Upton Lake was designed by the Tingdene Group as a dedicated water space, where two-bedroom floating homes are connected by a floating pontoon network. Flood defence systems are weaved into the structures and security systems put in place to ensure peace of mind to residents at all times. There is also a dedicated car park

alongside the short run to the Bristol Channel and open waters, the marina is the perfect spot for all types of boaters to berth and use as a secure, central base. Upton Marina is a TransEurope Marina and has 4 Gold Anchors from the Yacht Harbour Association, meaning customers and visitors get the best in boating and marina facilities.

for residents and visitors to come and go as easily as possible. Every aspect has been designed to make life on the water as simple and easy as possible, to allow more time to enjoy everything else! Nestled alongside the mighty River Severn and just a stone’s throw away from the historical town of Upton, one of only two towns to have a river frontage on the Severn, Upton Lake neighbours Tingdene’s Upton Marina, the largest marina on the river. Established in the 1970’s and acquired by Tingdene in 2001, Upton Marina is a well-established part of the Upton-upon-Severn’s and the midlands boating community. The Marina is home to 227 secure pontoon moorings for all types of craft, including anything from widebeam narrowboats to small day boats and ribs. Upton Marina has direct access to a huge network of waterways from the 58 miles of the River Severn alone, and

THE HOMES Waterfront Living’s floating homes have been intelligently designed in collaboration with Prestige Homeseeker to enhance the beautiful lake views and surrounding woodlands. Full height windows throughout allow natural light to stream through the space and give ample opportunity to spot wildlife and take in the unbelievable landscapes enclosing the homes. The open design doesn’t stop there, with the large living, dining and kitchen area combining the most comfortable furnishings to sink into and a stylish and functional kitchen area. Spacious decking spans the entire property and is the real showstopper for summer days or nighttime entertaining. The roomy master bedroom boasts a contemporary ensuite bathroom and fitted wardrobes for complete ease of living, and the similarly designed adaptable second bedroom can transform into an office space if preferred. Our floating homes represent a carefully considered combination of cutting-edge technology, and aesthetic designs that are predicted to set the standard of floating homes in this country. What sets Waterfront Living’s floating homes off into their own standard is the Upton Lake setting and beauty that comes with it, and of course the rolling

Malvern Hills framing these already stunning landscapes. It is doubtful any other property could give this level of distinctive and unique views and experiences every day! THE SEVERN AND SURROUNDING AREAS The choice of mooring in Upton Marina with access to both the sea and inland waterways is a significant advantage. This location provides the best of both worlds, offering boaters the freedom to explore different waterways while ensuring they are never too far from the wide open sea. This flexibility can be particularly appealing for those who value variety in their boating experiences or are transitioning between the two. Thriving Upton-on-Severn is just a short walk away, where you can immerse yourself in the historical culture, wander around independent shops, and work your way around the reams of restaurants, and cafés. Upton is wellknown for its summer of cultural events, with a jam-packed calendar from MarchOctober with everything from jazz, folk and blues celebrations and the popular Sunshine and Mello Festivals taking place. For those who love to get moving, whether on foot or by bicycle, there are endless routes to stroll around and get to know this ‘area of outstanding natural beauty’ inside and out, not to mention the famous Malvern Hills and Commons that are on the doorstep of Upton Lake and are ready and waiting to be explored. Formed from some of the most ancient rocks in England, the Malvern Hills cover three counties – Worcestershire, Herefordshire, and Gloucestershire. WATERFRONT LIVING

A NOTE FROM ONE OF OUR RESIDENTS… “Let me share with you why living anywhere else seems unimaginable. This morning, I woke up to a gentle tapping from a bird on my balcony glass panels, right in front of my large bedroom window. The view from there is breath-taking and a serene lake stretches out before me. I never want to close my curtains. As the sun rose, its reflection on the water painted my living room walls and ceiling with a beautiful array of colours. The atmosphere inside changes throughout the day, depending on the time. I have lovely blinds in the living room, but I prefer to keep them fully open because the windows are exquisite, and the view is simply stunning. I’ve learned that true happiness doesn’t come from having a lot of things. The other day, I had friends over (I’ve made new friends quickly since moving to this area), and we had a conversation about what we would do if we suddenly had £30,000,000 at our disposal. One friend immediately started looking at expensive houses, another said they would travel the world in first class, and everyone talked about lavish houses, cars, and luxury items. But when it was my turn, I realized I already have everything I want right here. Maybe I would consider a home in Switzerland and travel the world, but when it comes to the UK, I would stay exactly where I am. Living at Upton Lake takes me away from the real world. I don’t listen to the news; instead, I wake up to the sweet melodies of birds singing, rather than the harsh sound of an alarm clock or traffic noise. The only noise I make is when I turn up Bruce Springsteen a little too loudly! I’ve created my own reality, and I couldn’t be happier.”

Finally, an inflatable boat with style.

Here’s how PudBoat did it. PudBoat is excited to bring a new style of inflatable boat to the UK, offering a design that has never been seen before. This unique and groundbreaking boat is set to revolutionise the boating experience for enthusiasts across the country. Created with comfort and ease of use in mind, the PudBoat is a game-changer for boat owners. Setting itself apart with its innovative use of drop stitch technology, this enables new shapes and designs that have never been seen before in inflatable boats. The PudBoat’s unique style features inward facing seating and rigid sides that double as backrests for passengers providing a nice touch of comfort. Unlike many traditional inflatables, it also boasts an inflatable flat deck allowing for more seating space as well as side buoys providing a smoother ride for all on board. In addition to its innovative design, the PudBoat also aims to make boat ownership easy. With no need for a mooring or trailer, the PudBoat can be entirely deflated making it convenient for boat owners to store and take from place to place. Setting up the PudBoat is a breeze, taking fewer than 15 minutes to go from packaged to fully inflated. The UK market for inflatable boats has seen a surge in demand over recent years, particularly with the rise in domestic holidays and outdoor activities since the

pandemic. As more people discover the joy of boating, the PudBoat stands out from the competition with its unique design and focus on comfort and convenience. While there are other inflatable boat brands available, the PudBoat aims to become a strong alternative to those wanting the comfort of small solid hulled boats but at a fraction of the price. PudBoat has already received rave reviews from customers who have experienced the innovative inflatable boat firsthand. One customer sailing on the Thames said an onlooker was so impressed by the boat they had to run along the towpath to stop and ask about it, saying he had never seen anything like it before. Another customer, new to boating, found the PudBoat incredibly easy to use and received multiple enquiries from curious onlookers during their time on the water. The PudBoat might be new, but the founder says they are committed to continuous improvement. While the current PudBoat Sailfish model offers a stylish and comfortable boating experience for up to four adults, the company has plans to develop and introduce different styles and sizes of boats in the future. ‘The goal is always to encourage more people to take to the water and enjoy the benefits of owning a PudBoat’ says the company. ‘We will never stop making the most stylish, most comfortable inflatable boats on the water.’

As the PudBoat weighs under 60kg, only a fraction of the outboard power is required compared to a solid hulled boat of the same size. Pictured here on the river Thames using a 55lb thrust electric outboard motor.

Get out on the water with the sleek PudBoat Sailfish model. This fully inflatable boat is designed to be neatly rolled up when not in use and comes with its own storage bag.

• Sits 4 adults comfortably • Solid transom board for short shaft outboard motors (not included) to attach to • Inflation time using pump: under 15 minutes • Pump (with H-R type connector) and repair kit both included • Made using PVC with drop stitch technology to create a strong, rigid shape • Removable seating should you want a little more space

A NEW OF LIFE

Cruise along the river Wey and discover the vibrant towns, pretty villages and the glorious, lush green and wooded countryside of Surrey.

M

uch of the River Wey falls within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding National Beauty, so it stands to reason that it’s one of England’s most unique and rich landscapes. The everchanging vistas means that there is always plenty to see, with the waterway’s historic locks and their charming cottages serving to enhance its special character.

We all know how important it is for our mental and physical health to connect with nature and to ensure we have access to green and blue spaces, and this stretch of river is positively packed with stress-busting scenery and a huge number

of wildlife habitats. The River Wey is unusual in that it has two sources, one in Hampshire, identified as the North Branch, and one in West Sussex, the South Branch, and the longest having been constructed around the time of the English Civil War 350 years ago. The two navigations have 16 locks, 12 weirs, 50 weir structures, 24 bridges, 13 cottages and 24 other buildings to explore. All have been in the care of the National Trust since 1964 and have seen significant investment to the environment and landscape over the last 40 years. The two rivers flow into Surrey, joining at the picturesque village of Tilford, and remain in the county until reaching the Thames at Weybridge. The Wey Navigations connect to over 2,000 miles of waterways in Britain, so you could escape for months if you so desired!

INLAND WATERWAYS

The Anchor at Pyrford

Haw Lock with its tranquil countryside scenes, real ale and top-quality pub grub. An inn has existed at the lock for over 200 years, with the first recorded licence being granted in 1782, and local legend tells of a haunting and of gypsies racing donkeys across the bridge at the turn of the 20th century. The Anchor at Pyrford is a beautiful hidden gem and a perfect example of a traditional English pub. Located right next to Pyrford Lock and Pyrford Marina, it’s a short distance from the wonderful Wisley Gardens – the jewel in the crown of the Royal Horticultural Society.

WHAT’S ON THE WEY? From National Trust properties and nature reserves to RHS Wisley Gardens and Waverley Abbey, there’s plenty to see and do along the Wey. Car fanatics will race to Brooklands Motor Museum at the site of the famous racetrack in Weybridge, and fans of nostalgia will jump aboard the narrowboat Iona for a horse-drawn trip down one of the most beautiful stretches of the river in Godalming. At the Dapdune Wharf in Guildford visitors can climb aboard a restored barge, learn how to tie a sailor’s knot or head into the museum to find out more about the rich history of this historical waterway. Along the Wey you will have the opportunity to discover how a watermill works, how a witch and a cauldron are inexplicably linked to an ancient church, how gunpowder was made, and

where you can sit alongside a ghostly congregation dressed in all their finery. And if spooky tales float your boat, you can visit the Lammas Lands in Godalming where it is said you’ll hear the sound of a hangman’s cart, a murmuring crowd and the sound of rope on wood as two bodies (those of the last two murderers to be hanged in the town) swing in the breeze. Warning - it’s not for the faint hearted! GLORIOUS GASTRONOMY This stunning stretch of waterway abounds in pubs and restaurants of all types, from charmingly quaint 18th century pubs to cosmopolitan upmarket bars and restaurants. But it’s the pubs and waterside eateries that are a real pull for visitors to the area, and with a 20-mile stretch of waterway to explore, you’ll be spoilt for choice. A must-visit is the White Hart Inn at New

The Mill at Elstead offers glorious views from the comfort of a converted water mill; The Stag on the River in Eashing is the perfect spot for real ale lovers, serving Hogs Back Brewery’s Hazy Hog and the new Hogstar lager; The Weyside in Guilford is just one of three great riverside pubs in the town, all with moorings close by; and if you’re yearning for a spot of afternoon tea or a scrumptious Sunday roast with all the trimmings, stop off at Hector’s Bistro at Farncombe Boat House. You can also do a float-by to pick up one of Hector’s special day boat hampers and cruise off to find a secluded picnic spot away from it all. MARVELLOUS MOORINGS AT PYRFORD MARINA The perfect base from which to explore the Wey, east or west, and is located in a tranquil and beautiful spot within three hours cruising of the Thames, Tingdene Pyrford Marina has all of the facilities you need to set you on your way, and what’s

more, the excellent transport links of the M25 and A3 make getting to the marina and your craft as easy as can be. EASE OF LIVING Pyrford Marina moorings are designed to make your life as easy as possible. The marina boasts premium facilities including a laundry rooms, a chandlery, fuel, pump outs, Wi-Fi, and staff on hand during office hours to help with any queries. PARKING For narrowboat enthusiasts who own a vehicle or need a place to park for occasional land-based excursions, annual moorings typically offer designated parking areas. This eliminates the hassle of finding suitable parking spaces in unfamiliar areas and keeps your vehicle safe and accessible.

FRIENDLY COMMUNITY

Other loyalty rewards include:

Perhaps one of the most significant advantages of an annual mooring is the sense of community. Living or socialising alongside fellow boaters who share your love for the waterways creates a tight-knit, supportive environment. It's a chance to swap stories and tips, and forge lasting friendships.

• Free or discounted pump outs

TINGDENE PRIVILEGE SCHEME

TOILETS AND SHOWERS One of the most compelling reasons to choose a Pyrford Marina mooring is the accessibility to onsite, newly refurbished toilets and showers. While the selfcontained nature of narrowboats is part of their appeal, the luxury of a warm, clean restroom and a hot shower can be a game-changer after a long day out on the water. ACCESS TO FOOD SUPPLIES The idea of hauling groceries and supplies back to your boat can be less than appealing, but at Pyrford Marinas you can get direct deliveries to your boat. The proximity to restaurants, as we have explored, is ideal. One of the pleasures of narrow boating is exploring local cuisine, and the Wey’s offering provides a huge choice of venues as a welcome escape from cooking. This also gives you the chance to connect with fellow boaters over a delicious meal. WATER AND ELECTRICITY This essential, but often overlooked, access to utilities is as standard at Pyrford Marina for every berth holder. Maintaining a comfortable living environment aboard your boat is key for a carefree, enjoyable time on board. You can top up your pay-as-yougo meters in the Marina office during office hours, 7 days a week. SAFETY Safety is paramount, so with the help of well-lit paths and communal areas, an access gate, and staff onsite, we can ensure your peace of mind for your personal safety and vessel.

Our process revolves around the revival of classic vessels, breathing new life into their storied pasts. Through innovative technology integration and careful material selection, we preserve the yacht’s legacy while ushering in an era of enhanced performance, comfort, and sustainability. We find two types of clients – firstly, the one who has a

boat he knows, understands, and is comfortable with and has probably already invested significant money in making sure he is safe at sea, but the boat looks tired…the situation of our Portofino 46 owner. Who, before SETAG, would run the risk and cost of changing what he knows for something he is unsure of, or to update in stages across the years with multiple suppliers involved. Secondly, there is the owner that considers new but

From energy-efficient systems to the use of sustainable materials, our approach signifies a harmonious blend of opulence and environmental responsibility…. after all, what SETAG offer is the ultimate in luxury upcycling. Every design detail is tailored to your desires, resulting in a yacht that is truly yours. Experience the transformation. Explore the possibilities. 2006, PORTOFINO 46 On display at this year’s Southampton International Boat show was a real showpiece – our latest project, Relax, a 2006 Portofino 46. Being the only

pre-owned boat on display at the boat show, with her classic lines and now transformed exterior on full display through a full respray & extensive GRP work - caught people’s attention. Displayed alongside brand-new yachts, she stood tall and offered an interesting alternative for people to discover particularly as new boat prices soar and waiting lists continue to extend. Having made our mark on the industry, people understand our concept at SETAG now it is demonstrating what we can really do. Our client has owned this yacht from 2006 so she is a yacht he knows, understands, is comfortable with. He considered replacing with new but is attached to Relax for sentimental reasons and couldn’t comprehend

the multiple years wait time for new, compared to a few months in refit. Additionally, producing a custom yacht to his taste and requirements appealed to his sense of fun and excitement. The benefits of a refit over buying a new boat are huge. Technologies change – from navigation systems to your entertainment set-up. Tastes in interiors also change, and things can start to look dated…as they did on Relax. Now, with our bespoke design & refit luxury service you can update your loved boat so that she is fit for purpose and up to speed with all the latest trends and developments. The Revitalisation of a 17-year-old boat. Over time, as technology and design evolve, the boat stood as a nostalgic relic of the past. However, SETAG have undergone an ambitious project to transform this aging beauty into a luxurious bespoke marvel, blending modern technology with classic allure. CLIENT’S VISION Our client’s vision was to retain the classic essence of his beloved Portofino that he has owned for 17 years, whilst infusing the yacht with contemporary luxury. SETAG never want to alter the yachts character through our refits and instead work with the original elements that remain to create a seamless fusion of original & new. Like many yachts from this era, Relax had a significant amount of timber on display which we tastefully reduced. We retained parts of her classic essence, by leaving some original timber which just required repairs and then covered areas in the Galley and structural bulkheads to tone down the timber for a more modern look and feel. This project was a true whole boat transformation involving the entire

interior, meaning we stripped the yacht back to her bare bones, the full exterior and engine room - a real embodiment of our services at SETAG as we have demonstrated our ‘one-stop-shop’ offer to the pre-owned market. A COMPLETE METAMORPHOSIS Led by our renowned designers and craftsmen, the conceptualisation phase of every project focuses on respecting the boat’s heritage, our clients wants and desires whilst integrating the latest marine technologies and forwardthinking designs. A meticulous analysis of every boat on arrival to our HQ in Plymouth, gives us and our client a clear understanding of their boats condition and whether there are any hidden problems that we need to address. Couple this with extensive client consultations lays the foundation for a design that seamlessly merges classic charm with opulent modern features.

planned to ensure a harmonious blend of nostalgia and sophistication. The transformation of Relax was a meticulous blend of skilled craftsmanship and cutting-edge design & technology. The original woodwork was beautifully restored, preserving the boat’s original elegance. A state-ofthe-art navigation suite was seamlessly integrated within a newly sprayed dash – ensuring precision and safety in every voyage. The interior space underwent a complete metamorphosis, embracing contemporary aesthetics and luxurious amenities. Every detail, from the opulent furnishings to the custom-designed lighting, was carefully curated to reflect the client’s refined taste and lifestyle. Innovative solutions were applied to revitalise the boat’s systems. A climate control system was installed to ensure optimal comfort regardless of weather conditions. Renewable energy sources

were harnessed to reduce the boat’s environmental footprint, aligning with the client’s commitment to sustainability. The incorporation of smart home technology facilitated seamless control of various functionalities, further enhancing the onboard experience. Preserving the sentimental value attached to the vessel was paramount for us and our client, yet as with every project, the challenges were multifaceted. Upgrading the boat’s

There was a significant focus on engineering for this project which involved fitting a generator, total renewal of the air-conditioning system, a whole navigation suite which warranted a complete dash reconfiguration, fitting a Fusion stereo system throughout the boat and a total engine room refurbishment.

We fitted new propellers and have corrected the running angle as the boat was riding bow high. Bow & stern thrusters have been fitted along with an Osmosis check to the hull for confidence in longevity. A new toilet system has been fitted to the Heads and new teak has been laid to the cockpit and bathing platform. To complete the exterior transformation, we conducted major GRP repairs to the hull & superstructure as there were

significant cracks from over exposure to the sun. Once the GRP repairs were complete, we repainted the hull, superstructure, radar arch & equipment, the wet bar and dash console. Evaluating the current propulsion system and therefore upgrading to more efficient bespoke props & a complete engine refurbishment to enhance speed and fuel efficiency. Installing this modern propulsion technology, to reduce environmental impact and improve performance. We have achieved a 70% reduction in drive train vibration, a true benefit to the owner and the long-term experience of the boat. The beauty of a refit is that you can achieve high levels of luxury with an absolute fraction of the environment impact of a new build. We can transform existing designs not just to today’s standards, but to tomorrow’s, with minimal environmental impact. Whilst upgrading the engineering elements of an older yacht enhance its performance, safety, and longevity.

TIME FOR TRAINNG

WINTER TRAINING The importance of Shoreside Learning

W

ith winter closing in, the thought of getting out on the water is becoming less and less appealing. For new boaters and experienced sailors alike, practicing your skills and continuing to develop your boating knowledge throughout the winter is an important part of becoming a seasoned expert. The colder seasons are a perfect opportunity to take part in shore-based training. From the comfort of a classroom, you can consolidate your knowledge, fill in gaps in your theoretical know-how, and learn new skills. A combination of both practical experience and theoretical understanding provides a comprehensive foundation that enhances safety, builds confidence, and ensures the enjoyment of everyone on the boat. NAVIGATION Theoretical navigation knowledge is indispensable for boaters due to its pivotal role in ensuring safety, efficiency, and compliance with maritime regulations.

introduces basic seamanship, navigation, lights and shapes, weather, and collision regulations. For those wanting to develop their skills further, the RYA Day Skipper Theory course teaches advanced skills including how to passage plan and navigate along offshore and coastal passages using electronic navigation.

Boaters rely on this knowledge to navigate safely, steering clear of potential dangers like rocks and sandbars, while also adhering to navigation rules to prevent collisions with other vessels. Whether you are visiting your favourite destination or exploring a new area, planning your journey ahead of time is essential.

In essence, navigation knowledge forms the bedrock for boaters' practical navigation skills, equipping them with the ability to navigate proficiently whatever the conditions. SEA SURVIVAL

Efficient route planning, considering factors such as currents, tides, and weather conditions, is facilitated by a solid understanding of navigation principles. This proficiency not only saves time and fuel, but also contributes to a smoother and more comfortable journey. Shorebased courses such as the RYA Essential Seamanship & Navigation course introduce digital navigation and safety awareness, developing your understanding of navigation technology, tides, rules of the road and passage planning. In adverse conditions, such as low visibility or emergencies, boaters need navigation skills to make informed decisions and navigate to safety. Additionally, compliance with international and local regulations, and understanding radar and global positioning systems (GPS) are all contingent on a foundational grasp of navigation concepts. For beginners, the RYA Essential Seamanship & Navigation course

Shore-based sea survival training holds paramount importance for boaters, addressing key aspects of emergency preparedness and safety at sea. This training is essential as it imparts crucial skills and knowledge necessary for responding effectively to unforeseen crises that may arise during maritime activities. Boaters undergo instruction on the proper use of safety equipment, including life jackets, life rafts, and distress signals, ensuring they are well-versed in deploying these resources in emergency situations. Moreover, the training covers abandon ship procedures, providing boaters with protocols for evacuating a vessel safely in the event of a catastrophic incident. Survival techniques are a central focus of shore-based sea survival training, teaching boaters essential skills for staying afloat in open water, conserving energy, and maintaining body heat—a critical consideration in challenging conditions. Additionally, participants gain insights into search and rescue procedures, learning effective ways to signal for help and communicate with rescue teams. Understanding weather patterns and their potential impact on sea conditions is also emphasised, empowering boaters to make

informed decisions and avoid adverse weather-related situations. Shore-based sea survival courses go hand in hand with practical boating experience, with both experiences necessary for competent boaters. Whether you are a boating beginner or have significant experience on the water, completing a shore-based course such as the RYA Sea Survival course is essential in filling in gaps in your knowledge, and ensuring that you and your crew are safe. FIRST AID To prepare for a safe journey, shoreside

first aid training is essential for any boater planning a trip. Having competent knowledge of injury management, CPR, hypothermia, and heat exhaustion is vital and could help save a life. Going out on the water without completing this training beforehand could put your entire crew in danger and is an essential skill for boaters of all levels. VHF RADIO VHF (Very High Frequency) radios can be a boater’s lifeline in an emergency. Whether you run into bad weather, have a medical emergency on board, or run out of fuel,

competently operating your radio is an essential skill to help communicate with the shore and emergency services. VHF radio courses are the only formal training legally required by boaters in the UK. Your VHF radio, alongside any other transmitting equipment on board, must be covered by an appropriate licence to comply with UK maritime regulations. Not only does an approved VHF radio course keep you compliant, but it also provides peace of mind that in an emergency, you have the knowledge and skills to confidently communicate with the shore,

of course immeasurable and combining practical experience with shorebased training undoubtedly results in comprehensive skill development. Boaters gain a well-rounded set of competencies, including both hands-on skills and theoretical knowledge. Furthermore, if you plan to turn boating into a career, you may require some theoretical certifications to complete your necessary commercial training.

emergency services, and other boats. PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE VS SHOREBASED TRAINING – WHICH IS MORE IMPORTANT? For seasoned boaters, completing shorebased training may seem pointless. If you have been on the water for 30 years, you may consider sitting in a classroom and learning about navigation to be unnecessary. However, the importance of consolidating your knowledge and the marriage of both practical experience and theoretical knowledge is invaluable. The significance of practical experience is

SHORE-BASED BOAT TRAINING – WHERE DO I START? If you have little or no experience of classroom learning, now is a great opportunity to begin. As you store your boat away for winter, you can continue pursuing your passion for boating with a series of essential shore-based courses.

BOATING AS A CAREER – WHAT CLASSROOM LEARNING IS REQUIRED? Whether you are an aspiring deckhand or hope to enter the commercial boating industry as a skipper, there are elements of shore-based classroom training that are required. Classroom learning for individuals pursuing a boating career typically encompasses a range of subjects designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of maritime principles, safety procedures, and operational skills. The specific courses and certifications required can vary based on the type of boating career and the region's regulatory requirements. For example, those pursuing a career on a superyacht or in the water sports industry may require PWC instructor training, which includes classroom teaching skills and passage planning.

FOR BEGINNERS: With adverse weather and freezing water temperatures, winter is not the most convenient time to begin your boating journey, but for complete beginners, getting your theoretical knowledge up to scratch before venturing out onto the water is a great starting point. Some beginner-friendly classroom-based courses we would recommend include: • Essential Seamanship & Navigation Course • First Aid Course • Sea Survival Course • VHF Marine Radio Course

TIME FOR TRAINING These courses will give you a basic understanding of navigation, passage planning, and emergency procedures, providing a foundation for practical skills and the ability to make informed decisions on the water. FOR EXPERIENCED BOATERS: Whether you are planning a boating trip abroad or are looking for commercial endorsement, there are a variety of classroom-based courses which can help experienced boaters consolidate their knowledge and break into the commercial boating industry. Some courses we would recommend for experienced boaters include: • RYA Day Skipper Theory • RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory • Radar Operation • Diesel Engine These training courses will teach skills such as electronic navigation, advanced passage planning, and marine engineering to help you prepare for a career in the boating industry. It is never a bad idea to consolidate your knowledge and learn a new skill – regardless of how long you have been sailing. Whether you have a specific upcoming trip planned in unfamiliar waters, or just want to brush up on your boating knowledge, there’s a myriad of

intermediate and advanced classroombased courses for those who already know the basics. HOW TO FIND THE BEST TRAINING PROVIDER With so many training providers in operation, it can be challenging to choose the best one for your specific requirements. Whether you are a complete beginner or are looking for a shore-based course to consolidate your existing knowledge, it is important to find a reputable operator who can provide the most relevant course to meet your needs, taught by experienced professionals. One of the best ways to spot a trusted training provider is to find a training centre which is recognised by industry leading boating organisations such as the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). RYA certifications are recognised and respected all over the world and their courses are accompanied by high-quality learning materials. By choosing an RYA recognised training centre, you can have peace of mind that the instructors are appropriately qualified. Working in a classroom environment alongside instructors who have in-depth knowledge of boating makes it so much easier to learn new skills. When looking for the right training centre, don’t be afraid to ask specific questions about how their

training will help you meet your short- and longer-term goals. A good instructor will know exactly which courses will best meet your needs and will be able to recommend the best pathway to success. ARE YOU READY? Ready to book your course? Winter is the perfect time to consolidate your knowledge and learn new skills from the comfort of a classroom. Preparing yourself through shore-based training can be the key to unlocking a whole new world of boating opportunities. Whether you need passage planning skills for your first boat trip, VHF radio skills to get weather reports, or sea survival skills to give you and your crew peace of mind, there is a multitude of shore-based training courses available which provide you with indispensable experience and knowledge. Cast your sails & make waves in winter waters W

inter sailing in the UK may not immediately conjure up thoughts of warmth and relaxation, but for those avid sailors who are willing to bear the cold, it can offer a unique and fulfilling experience. While many individuals opt for warmer climates during the winter months, there is a dedicated group of sailors who embrace the challenges and delights of navigating the UK waters during this time of year. From the exhilaration of battling rough seas to the peacefulness of a quiet anchorage, winter sailing is a truly rewarding

endeavour. One of the greatest joys of winter sailing is the sense of solitude and tranquillity that can be found on the water. With fewer boats and tourists, the marinas and waterways are much quieter, allowing for a more peaceful and intimate sailing experience. The serenity of gliding through the eerily still waters, pushed along by a winters wind, surrounded by nature’s winter beauty, is a feeling like no other. It offers a respite from everyday life and provides an opportunity to connect with oneself and the elements in a profound way. Furthermore, it presents an array of

challenges that can be both thrilling and rewarding for experienced sailors. WONDERFUL WEATHER The UK’s unpredictable weather patterns make every outing an adventure, with ever-changing conditions keeping sailors on their toes. From heavy rain and strong winds to freezing temperatures and foggy mornings, the weather can be variable and unpredictable. While this may deter some, for those who relish a challenge, it only heightens the excitement and sense of achievement that comes with safely

navigating through these conditions. Moreover, providing an opportunity for sailors to hone their skills and improve their sailing techniques. The adverse weather conditions and rougher seas act as a training ground for some, testing their ability to handle their boats in challenging situations. These experiences not only strengthen their sailing skills but also increase their confidence and resilience whilst on the water. The beauty of the UK’s winter landscape cannot be overstated. With the arrival of

winter, the coastal areas and waterways transform into a mesmerising wonderland, with frost-covered landscapes and snowy hills providing a breathtaking backdrop for any sailing adventure. Whether it’s sailing along the rugged coastline of Cornwall

or exploring the picturesque lochs of Scotland, the UK’s winter scenery offers a striking contrast to the usual summer vistas. Sailing through these stunning landscapes is truly a feast for the senses and a sight to behold. British Boating Magazine WINTER 2023 | 61

WINTER SAILING

In addition to the thrill of braving the elements, the UK also offers unique opportunities for wildlife encounters during this time of year, it is common to spot seals, dolphins, and even whales along our coastlines, as they migrate or seek shelter in the relatively warmer waters. These encounters can be aweinspiring and provide a chance to witness the beauty of nature up close. The UK’s diverse marine life is a treasure to behold, and winter sailing provides an unparalleled opportunity to experience it in all its glory. BE PREPARED While winter sailing may require extra precautions and preparation to ensure safety, the rewards are well worth the effort. The sense of accomplishment that

comes from overcoming challenges and pushing oneself to sail in less-than-ideal conditions is immeasurable. It instils a sense of resilience and confidence, knowing that one has mastered the art of sailing in even the most unforgiving seasons. To make the most of the challenge, it is important to invest in appropriate gear and equipment. Warm, waterproof clothing, including layers, a sturdy life jacket, and a well-maintained boat are essential for staying safe and comfortable on the water. It is also wise to check weather forecasts regularly and plan outings accordingly, ensuring that all necessary precautions are taken. One of the most critical aspects of winter sailing is ensuring that your sailboat is in prime condition. Taking the time to thoroughly inspect and maintain your vessel before winter sets in is key to a safe and pleasant sailing experience. Begin by examining the hull for any signs of damage or wear. Repair any cracks or chip’s away at the paint to prevent the seasons rough water’s from seeping in and causing further deterioration. It is also a good idea to check the keel and rudder, as they are likely to be exposed to significant strain

at this time of year. Make any necessary repairs or adjustments as needed to ensure their integrity. Next, focus on your boat’s engine and electrical systems. Cold temperatures can be harsh on these components, so proper maintenance is crucial to avoid any issues while out on the water. Change the oil and replace the filters to ensure optimal engine performance, considering an auxiliary engine as a backup should your main engine fail, this could be a small lightweight outboard engine, or perhaps a stern fitted alternative. Check the batteries and make sure they are fully charged and in good condition. Inspect the wiring for any signs of corrosion or damage, replacing or repairing as necessary. Taking these measures will help ensure that your sailboat’s engine and electrical systems are reliable and functional when navigating through the winter waters. RIGGING The rigging of your sailboat is also of utmost importance during winter sailing. Check all the standing and running rigging for any signs of wear or weakness, replacing any damaged parts as necessary. Inspect the sails for any tears or fraying and have them repaired if needed. It’s also a good idea to remove the sails when not in use and store them in a dry area to prevent them from British Boating Magazine WINTER 2023 | 63

deteriorating over the winter. Another crucial step in preparing your sailboat for winter sailing is to inspect and maintain the boat’s plumbing system. Drain and flush all water tanks to prevent freezing and potential damage when leaving the boat for longer periods throughout the colder months. Insulate any exposed pipes or fittings to avoid freezing and bursting. Ensure that all the seacocks are working correctly and lubricate them as needed. ONBOARD SAFETY In addition to mechanical maintenance, it is equally important to stock your boat with the necessary safety equipment. As winter sailing can present unpredictable conditions, it is crucial to be prepared for any emergencies that may arise. Make sure you have an ample supply of life jackets for all occupants of the boat and verify that they are in good condition. Stock up on flares, emergency signalling

devices, and a first aid kit. It is also advisable to have a backup VHF radio on board to maintain communication with the coastguard and other sailors should your main VHF appliance fail. Prioritizing safety ensures that you can navigate the UK waters with peace of mind during the winter season. While it may seem obvious, appropriate clothing and equipment are essential for winter sailing in the UK. The temperature drops significantly during this time of year, so dressing in warm layers is crucial to protect yourself from the cold. Opt for thermal base layers, fleece mid-layers, and a waterproof outer layer to stay comfortable and dry. A good pair of gloves, a hat, and high-quality waterproof boots should also be part of your winter sailing gear, for more information on winter wear’s be sure to check out our fashion article in this magazine. MARINA MATTERS - DARTHAVEN MARINA

MARINA MATTERS delightful darthaven

A

dored by thousands, yet unexplored or visited by many, it is on the eastern banks of the beautiful River Dart, nestled and almost hugged by the charming character village of Kingswear that you will find the picturesque and perfectly equipped Darthaven Marina. One of few remaining privately and family owned Marina’s on the UK’s south west coastline. Owned by the Holman family, Darthaven Marina has housed berth holders and offered shelter to visiting yachts since the early 1970’s. Passed through the generations most recently seeing the transition of ownership and management from mother Suzette Holman to son, the marinas current Chief Executive Officer John Holman.

Meeting and talking at length with John it is hard not to feel that Darthaven is indeed in the very best of hands with him at the helm, a passionate and approachable man whose commitment to the business and care for the berth holders and his dedicated team was like none I had come across in my travels visiting many marinas across the world. A sense of pride, value and a gentle determination to deliver the best that the country has to offer in life on the water. With 270 Permanent berths, Darthaven Marina maintains a modern and contemporary feel with its wide LED lit timber pontoons, kept clean and foul free by the dedicated and friendly team of dock masters, a hustling community of boat owners both sail and power and all

The berths at Darthaven marina offer some of the most majestic views from the boat that I have ever experienced in the UK, the vibrant river dart itself a hive of activity, with pleasure and commercial traffic always offering something to study, adorned by the opposing picturesque town of Dartmouth and its enchanting, medieval characteristic vibes coming to life by day and quietly fading to sleep on an evening whilst the warm glow of the

towns street lights and lamps from boutiques, pubs and restaurants illuminate the water’s edge gently glowing against the calm movement of the rivers flow. In the silence and if you’re lucky you can hear the nose flare of the hunting seals that take habitat in the river itself, with some even coming to the back of the boat for scraps of fish, they seemed to be attracted to the glistening glow of underwater lights and soft music, at British Boating Magazine WINTER 2023 | 69

BUSTER ALUMINIUM BOATS

ince 1955 aluminium has played a part in boat building around the world revolutionising the traditional wooden built crafts of the era, favoured for its lightweight, durable and strong characteristics boat manufacturers were beginning to see the benefits of this modern and robust material for the production of small dinghy’s, skiffs and day boats.

Buster aluminium boats – handling and practicality, the British Boating team set out on the water with CDT Marine’s range of ‘Buster’ aluminium boats to find out more! What better way to test and trial a small aluminium boat than a cold windy day with a confused sea on an incoming tide with the wind against us – these were our exact thoughts as we made our way to meet with Chris Tracey, Founder and Managing Director or Dartmouth based CDT Marine on England’s Southwest Coast on the River Dart. CDT Marine are one of the UK’s four distributors of the Yamaha Motor’s ‘Buster’ boat range serving the South and Southwest of England . Buster boats played a vital part in the growing popularity and reputation of aluminium boats back in the 1970’s, primarily in Finland, Sweden and Norway. In 1977 it is said that the aluminium class of boat only contributed to 2 percent of the market share growing to a massive 30 percent by the early 1980’s with the launch of the Buster boat range in the Nordic regions of the world, Buster now has a dealer network in excess of one hundred and twenty-seven dealers world-wide and are highly regarded as one of the world’s leaders in aluminium boat building. This said, the concept of taking to the water on a small aluminium built boat compared to the fifty-foot fly bridge we were more accustomed to was somewhat daunting with the days conditions and if honest I was hesitant and slightly cautious about the day’s trials ahead. How wrong I was, from the moment we boarded the smallest of our test vessels,

the Buster S1, I was amazed at its stability in the water, its spacious deck space and phenomenal sea keeping ability. A comfortable and practical helm with everything you needed at arm’s length. An undisrupted 360-degree view offering safe navigation and enhanced sea handling ability, giving the helmsman complete and sheltered confidence and control behind the perfectly placed splash screen to navigate other vessels on the water as well as changing sea conditions. With ample storage for ropes, safety equipment, lunch and all other necessities for a great day out on the water. Its practical design made single handed boating a stressfree experience, with plenty of cleats for fenders and tying off securely. As we progressed through the range to the slightly bigger Buster M1, it was clear that these great boats are perfectly built for all manner of boating, whether it be for commercial use or pleasure boating. With comfort, style and build quality taken care of power certainly hasn’t been forgotten

What a boat! Fitted with the Yamaha 150 horsepower 2.8 litre outboard, this boat was an absolute machine, punching and cutting through the water with little effort, with its handling and manoeuvrability matching that of any other boat I’ve been aboard. Tailored with a beautiful diamond stitch upholstery throughout the Buster Max XXL Vmax would not be left behind for style verses its competitors in the marketplace. Fitted out with rubber panelling within the bilges to reduce noise and dampen any vibration the ride was remarkably quiet and smooth, this boat gave you a real James Bond feeling, its full wrap around screen offering complete shelter and protection from spray, wind and noise, this incredible boat was limitless in fun and comfort, for me

Buster S1 (DARC Safety Boat)

designed just for Buster S.

The Buster S stands tall among competitors due to its modern, clean hull shape. From its predecessors, it retains its status as a versatile craft for inland lakes and coastal waters alike. The carefully designed and meticulously executed details, create a purpose-built boat for summer outings, fishing and commuting. The hull also has less of a plaining threshold, especially when loaded.

Buster designs all models to be as adjustable as possible. The Buster S is no exception. Due to the different layout options, the Buster S can double as spacious commuter, picnic boat for summer outings, or pure cargo carrier. You can trail the boat on a trailer without brakes behind a regular car. The improved seagoing abilities give you an additional sense of safety if the weather deteriorates.

Buster S is three boats on the same hull. The model is available as a traditional open version, driven from the aft seat, as a single side console version, and finally as a single centre console version. The open version is well suited for someone looking for a simple, safe allrounder with lots of cargo space. SAFE USE OF ALUMINIUM BOATS Boating safety begins with a carefully designed and constructed boat. The boat and its crew are the responsibility of the boat’s captain, so make sure that all passengers are aware of how to behave in your boat. • Before casting off, make sure that all passengers have easy access to life jackets. We recommend that everyone in the boat wear their life jackets for the entire duration of the boat ride. • Before casting off, empty any excess bilge water. Bilge pumps always leave a little water at the bottom of the boat, but larger amounts of water will make the boat unstable. Inspect the bilge pump and clean the head of the suction pipe regularly. • The most common cause of breakdowns when operating boats is simply running out of fuel or a problem with the fuel system. Make sure your boat has a sufficient amount of fuel for the planned journey and take with an extra fuel canister when needed.

higher than the stern.

• ALL in one

The drainage holes should be closed if water enters the deck through the holes when loading the boat. In all other situations, the drainage holes should be kept open. The drainage holes should be cleaned regularly to remove any dirt and prevent blockages.

Not just a chart plotter. A completely new user experience.

BILGE PUMP AND EMPTYING THE BILGE. The amount of water in the bilge should be kept to a minimum, as any free-flowing water will destabilise the boat. Water that has collected or condensed in the bilge can be removed by means of an electric or manual bilge pump. Automatic bilge pumps are always on standby whenever the battery is connected regardless of the position of the main power switch. The bilge pump can also be operated from the switch on the control panel. Check regularly to make sure that the bilge pump is operational. A drainage stopper is located in the lower corner of the transom for emptying the bilge when the boat is on land or on a trailer.

• Always attach the emergency cut-off cord / man overboard lanyard, which cuts off the engine if the operator falls overboard or sways out of position. One end of the emergency cut-off cord / man overboard lanyard is connected to the boat’s console and the other end should be attached around the operator’s hand or thigh. EMPTYING THE BOAT OF WATER AND RAINWATER REMOVING RAINWATER Most Buster boat models are designed to drain rainwater automatically from the deck when the boat is in the water. Rainwater will also drain from the deck when the boat is on land so long as the bow is slightly

We have combined 60 years of industrial experience in boatbuilding with extensive consumer insight and an out of the box approach to product development. After years of internal development and testing we are proud to bring you a revolutionary, easy approach to powerboating –Buster Q.

The drainage holes should be cleaned regularly to remove any dirt and prevent blockages. The bilge pump is accessible on most boat models via a service hatch in the motor well. Please refer to the user manual for your own boat model for more detailed information about removing water. ENTERTAINMENT Imagine being able to share your favourite music with friends and family while enjoying a day off on the water. Use your favourite mobile apps for wireless playback. Enjoy hassle-free access to FM and DAB radio when you need it. With advanced Wireless features, it´s power efficient too, so you can enjoy your personal music from your smartphone all day long.

• Before casting off, allow the engine to run a little and make sure that cooling water is exiting the engine. If the circulation of cooling water is restricted, the engine can seize and be damaged. At the same time, check that the steering and other controls are operating correctly. • Load the boat evenly and secure heavy items, such as the anchor, to prevent them from moving due to waves or swaying of the boat.

To facilitate a new way of boating, we have completely rethought the way you interact with the boat. Inspired by the automotive and handheld smart device industries, we have taken all key functions and integrated them into one huge touchscreen. At the same time, we enhanced entertainment, safety and training related functionality, bringing it into the realm of the same, intuitive user experience–Buster Q.

YOUR BUSTER BOAT ALWAYS IN YOUR POCKET The Buster App keeps vital boat information and your personal virtual logbook handily available, always and anywhere. By pairing your app with your Buster Q unit you are better prepared for upcoming boating activities, since you can check the location, fuel level and battery status of your Buster boat. Steering a Clear Path: NAVIGATING THE BENEFITS OF CHART PLOTTER UPGRADES Upgrading your chart plotter should be at the top of your list for possible upgrades. An up to date modern chart plotter is an essential piece of equipment that allows you to navigate the waters with ease and precision. With advanced technology and features, chart plotters can revolutionise

your boating experience. One of the biggest benefits of chart plotter upgrades is improved accuracy. Modern chart plotters use advanced GPS technology to provide real-time positioning and accurate navigation. This means you can confidently navigate even the trickiest of waterways, avoiding hazards and obstacles along the way. Another advantage of chart plotter upgrades is the ability to customise your display. Many chart plotters offer a range of options for displaying charts, such as split screens or overlaying radar images. This allows you to tailor the display to your preferences and make the most of the available information. Additionally, chart plotters can provide valuable information about tides, currents, and weather conditions. With this data at your fingertips, you can plan your trips more effectively and avoid potentially dangerous situations. It’s like having a personal navigator right there with you on the boat, sitting stylishly at the helm!

Restoring Grandeur Aboard Your Vessel: The Magic of Upholstery Upgrades Have you ever looked around your boat

and thought that it could use a little sprucing up? Upholstery upgrades are the perfect way to restore the grandeur of your vessel and give it a fresh new look. Whether you’re looking to replace wornout seats or add a touch of luxury with plush cushions, upholstery upgrades can transform your boat into a modern, stylish and comfortable oasis on the water. One of the great things about upholstery upgrades is the wide range of options available. From marine-grade vinyl to luxurious fabrics, there’s a material to suit every taste and budget. You can choose from a variety of colours and patterns to match your personal style and give your boat a unique and customised look. Not only do upholstery upgrades enhance the aesthetic appeal of your boat, but they also provide practical benefits. Modern high-quality upholstery materials are designed to withstand the harsh marine environment, with features like UV resistance and water repellence. This means that your new upholstery will stay looking great for years to come, even in the face of sun, saltwater, and rough

conditions. But it’s not just about looks and durability. Upholstery upgrades also offer increased comfort and functionality. With plush cushions and ergonomic designs, you and your guests can relax in style on the water. Plus, you can choose features like builtin storage compartments or fold-down seating options to maximise the space and usability of your boat. All the while adding to the value and desire of your boat! And why stop there…why not speak to your upholsterer about your canopies too? A professional wash and re-proofing of your canopies can save you thousands of pounds in replacements whilst adding to the life span of your current equipment. such as HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils) reducing damaging emissions and the users carbon footprint, all the while giving the very best most reliable source of power available. Some may say why do you need power? For me, the answer is simple, a reliable power source ensures that you have sufficient power to recharge the boats batteries when on extended stays away, ensuring sufficient charge allowing the engines to start when required.

accidentally let out too much or too little chain. Lastly, anchor chain counters often come with a digital display that is easy to read, even in bright sunlight. This makes it effortless to keep track of your anchor chain length against incoming and outgoing tides that may affect your depth, allowing you to enjoy your boating experience with family or friends. Finally, a small LED digital display and control panel will allow you to anchor from the safety of your helm, relieving the need to send someone on to the bow, making an overall safer and stress free anchoring process.

Don’t find yourself dead in the water:

Question…Is it the anchor chain or anchor itself that has the biggest impact on keeping you firmly at anchor??

Staying Shipshape:

MARINE GENERATOR If your planning on longer stay away floating vacations next year, away from shore and available power then there are a couple of options for making sure you stay connected with a good power source and ensuring your batteries remain topped up whilst you’re away, allowing you to keep refrigerators, reverse cycle air conditioning and heating, battery chargers and hot water calorifiers running as well as the convenience of 240v sockets if and when you need them. Many sailors take advantage of the elements for power whilst on board, harnessing energy from the wind or sun to generate solar power to help run the systems and equipment on their boat, although I haven’t ever had much luck with this as a reliable source to power everything we need on board. More recently some people have opted for battery banks to supply their power requirements, both options are a great solution, but for me a good old fashioned generator has always been the most reliable option. Having recently changed our boat and the new one not being fitted with a generator we have hit the suppliers to explore our available options. Most boats will have a small space within the engine room to harness a modern, compact and lightweight generator, so a professional instal should be no trouble at all. There of course, is a bone of contention when considering the carbon footprint and the emissions generated when using a generator, however I was somewhat impressed and pleased to learn that there are options available to run ‘diesel generators’ on alternative fuel types

Achieving Peace Of Mind

BOAT ROPE REPLACEMENT :

With A Digital Anchor Chain Counter If you’re a boat owner looking to enhance your boating experience, you’ll know that safe and stress free anchoring is key if you really want to kick back and relax when on the water. One of our boat upgrades that can help you achieve this is a digital anchor chain counter. An anchor chain counter is a device that accurately measures and displays the length of anchor chain deployed, allowing you to have complete control over your anchoring process. With digital anchor chain counters, you can say goodbye to the guesswork and ensure that you have the right amount of chain out to keep your boat securely anchored. But what makes anchor chain counters so beneficial? Firstly, they provide accurate and real-time measurements, eliminating any room for error. This means you can anchor with confidence, knowing exactly how much chain you have deployed versus your depth gauge requirement. Secondly, anchor chain counters can offer additional features that make anchoring even easier. For example, some models include an automatic stop feature, which allows you to set a predetermined length of chain and have the counter stop when that length is reached. This feature is incredibly useful when anchoring in varying depths, as it ensures you don’t

When it comes to boating, safety is of utmost importance, one crucial aspect of maintaining a safe and seaworthy vessel is ensuring that your boat ropes are in top-notch condition. Often overlooked, replacing or upgrading boat ropes may seem like a simple task, but it’s one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. To help you stay shipshape and Bristol fashion, here are some tips for replacing boat ropes. Firstly, it’s essential to choose the right rope for your specific needs. There are various types of ropes available, each with its own strengths and purposes. Nylon ropes, for example, are strong and durable, making them ideal for mooring from a mooring buoy or for tying the boat off at your berth. On the other hand, polyester ropes have excellent resistance to UV rays and are perfect for use in sunny conditions. Consider your boating activities and the conditions you’ll be facing to select the most appropriate type and strength of rope. Next, be sure to measure the length of the rope you’ll need accurately. It’s always better to have a bit more than you need rather than not enough. Measure from the point where the rope will be attached to the boat to where it will be secured, accounting for any knots or loops that may be required, as a guide for a swing mooring or a mooring buoy, I would suggest a minimum rope length of twice the length of your vessel.

MAINTENANCE

Before using your new ropes, thoroughly inspect the fittings and attachment points for tying off on your boat. Look for signs of wear or damage and replace any worn-out or corroded hardware, this should include your cleat mounting plates, often hid under interior linings of where your cleats are bolted. On older boats these can sometimes rust, weaken or completely erode if you have any spider cracking around your cleat that has allowed water to seep in. This will help ensure the integrity of your new ropes and help keep you securely fastened when under strain. When it’s time to replace the rope, be sure to follow proper tying and knotting techniques. There are various knots that are commonly used in boating, such as the bowline, cleat hitch, and figure-eight knot. Learn how to tie these knots correctly or seek assistance from a boating professional if needed. Lastly, remember to regularly inspect your boat ropes for signs of wear and tear. Even the most durable ropes can become damaged over time, so it’s important to check them before each boating trip. Look for frayed or worn areas, as well as any signs of weakening or stretching. If you notice any issues, don’t hesitate to replace the rope promptly to ensure your safety on the water.

By following these tips and taking proper care of your boat ropes, you’ll be able to stay shipshape and Bristol fashion on your British boating adventures. Remember, safety should always be a top priority, and maintaining your ropes is a crucial part of that. So, don’t overlook this essential maintenance task – replace your boat ropes when needed and sail with confidence.

A good tip for adding longevity to the life span of your ropes: regularly soak your ropes in fresh water, with a little drop of washing up liquid, this will wash any salt out of the rope and prevent the rope from going brittle, it will also reduce the squeaking, creaking noises as your ropes come under tension whilst tied off, helping you to get a good night sleep!

Winter-wear on the water

M

any of us choose to keep our boats afloat all year now. For those of us who refuse to stow away our passion for open waters in winter, dressing for the season is key. Now, the air is colder and therefore denser, and the winds are stronger. With an average of 10.8 knots in winter, and storms not uncommon in the first few months of the calendar year, we need to be prepared for high windstrength at sea. Yet, whilst the weather can be challenging, sailing at this time of year offers so many blessings; crisp sunny days with friends and crew, and convivial evenings in front of a favourite pub’s log fire, discussing the day’s adventures, are priceless experiences. As wise people always say, there’s no bad weather, only bad clothes. Hence, whether you’re enjoying the coast, racing in regattas or enjoying open sea sailing, dressing appropriately is a crucial element in ensuring a comfortable and safe nautical adventure this season. Here,

we explore how the right clothing choices will offer you warmth, protection, and of course, a touch of maritime flair. LOVELY LAYERS Many of us set off early in winter to ensure home-arrival before it is dark, and the early starts can be somewhat fresh! Plus, sailing on open water provides no windbreaks. So, warmth is key – yet bulky clothing is a no-go. Thin layers trap more air and offer more mobility and movement. Hence, our top tip is to invest in a great-quality base layer top – shop for thermal and heat-preserving pieces by reputable sailing brands. Merino wool is a popular fabric as it is wicking, thermal and breathable; renowned for its natural insulation properties, it keeps one warm even when wet, making it ideal for those unpredictable moments on the water. Recycled polyester is also a widely-utilised material, as it is breathable and soft to the skin, also offering eco-benefits. Meanwhile,

88 | WINTER 2023 British Boating Magazine

thermal leggings that feel soft to the touch will keep warm no matter how many layers you add. We love Henri Lloyd’s NTS Aktiv Warm LS Top and matching Warm LS Pant; a coordinating, snug set that’s ideal for winter sailing, and made from recycled polyester fibres. Mid-layers such as sailing fleeces are designed to fit comfortably under the outer layers without restricting movement, and are an important step in a fail-safe wardrobe system, to stay warm. Choose a mid-layer that’s warm yet breathable, for optimum performance; a great example is Helly Hansen’s Women’s Daybreaker Fleece Jacket, boasting Polartec® technology. Lightweight jackets with synthetic insulation (instead of down) can be useful, as they retain warmth even when damp. Musto’s cosy Land Rover Primaloft jacket, inspired by the design of the car manufacturer’s iconic vehicles, boasts internal insulation, lining and shell, all made from recycled polyester.

WINTER FASHION

OILSKINS, SALOPETTES AND SAILING TROUSERS Today’s designs commonly feature lightweight and durable laminated fabrics, with clever additions such as reinforced knees, waist adjusters and upper-leg pockets. Choose brightly coloured pieces if you can, which will stand out better than blues and greys at dusk and in fog. North Sails’ bright red men’s Ocean Trousers are designed for extreme wet-weather conditions and are made from Gore-tex, for strength and superb waterproofing properties. Many women chose to sail in waterproof trousers rather than suits, but salopettes that cover the lower back do add a considerable amount of warmth. Ladies, look out for drop-seat styles as opposed to bib-and-brace-style straps, for easier comfort breaks, such as Gill’s OS2 Offshore Trousers for Women; impressively made from reclaimed plastic bottles and recycled fibres. WATERPROOF JACKETS Modern boating and yachting clothing designers have seamlessly blended fashion with function, offering a range of styles that marry classic maritime aesthetics with cutting-edge technology. Lightweight coastal or inshore jackets are great for day sails, overnight trips and conditions in temperate coastal sailing. Offshore jackets are more heavily built with larger storm hoods; great for multiday sails. Whatever your plans, choose a sailing jacket that is able to stand up to the elements; consider a bright colour, to aid visibility. Adjustable hoods and cuffs are handy essentials, as are reinforced panels in high-wear areas of the garment, ensuring durability against the rigors of sailing in winter. We love Gill Marine’s Men’s cherry red, OS2 Offshore Jacket, another piece of apparel made from plastic bottles, as well as recycled fibres (nylon and polyester). If you prefer a sailing suit to a jacket and trousers, similarly, look out for apparel boasting modern materials, waterproof zips and fully taped seams. You may also want to keep a general outdoor jacket onboard for any shorebased exploring or for errands at dock. Musto’s Women’s Corsica Jacket 2.0, with its anatomical, flattering feminine cut, is just the ticket. FOOTWEAR Although icy conditions are not so treacherous around the British Isles as in other countries, ice can still prove hazardous on hard surfaces. Slipways and decks get very slippery! However, the popular manufacturers offer a great range of waterproof and breathable sailing boots in materials like rubber or neoprene, with

sealed seams. Sailing boots with quickdrying Neoprene or Gore-Tex technology, and anti-marking soles, are popular. You may also find materials like leather and canvas-like Cordura in the more stylish designs at your local chandlery. Of course, there’s a big decision insulated or uninsulated? Insulated boots often have fluffy material that extends beyond the top of the boot, but it can get wet, and can wick water down into your socks. Uninsulated boots are easier to seal than insulated boots, and are quick drying – but you will need very warm socks. Do look out for easy, adjustable straps or modern lacing systems if you aren’t choosing a pull-on style. Boots without a breathable membrane are usually made of rubber or polyurethane (an artificial rubber) It is light and flexible and with good thermal properties, and tends to have better longevity that rubber, which admittedly can offer superior grip. (However, breathability is not typically optimal with polyurethane, potentially leading to somewhat smelly socks). If you do for a pull-on style, bear in mind that some, more basic boots can be quite wide, and on folk with larger feet, can even get stuck in gaps between deckware. A nice high-tech version of the wellingtonstyle boot is Dubarry’s Hobart ExtraFit Sailing boot – a stunning, waterproof boot made from advanced, lightweight synthetics, with removeable footbeds. ACCESSORIES There’s an array of accessories you can stock up on for winter sailing. It’s even worth taking spares of small items that may get dropped, and get wet. Choose insulated gloves for winter boating; waterproof, synthetic materials are widely regarded as the best fabrics for basic handling onboard. Good coldweather sailing gloves need to insulate and provide waterproof protection, while also allowing your hands to breathe; choose styles that are easy to remove and get back on, if more dexterity is required. GUL’s stretchy, Code Zero Winter Short Finger Sailing Gloves have a comfy, pre-shaped construction and a Clarino™ grippy palm. Have you seen the latest hand warmers? These are worn inside gloves, and come in various designs. For a basic product, choose from chemical reaction-based items, such as air-activated disposable heat packets, or reusable versions that crystallise using a supersaturated solution. Or for more investment, consider electric hand warmers that use electricity to harness power; they’re arguably more environmentally-friendly, and best suited to warming up after the dextrous onboard

WINTER FASHION If you’re spending time ashore then you may want to give more thought to the sartorial side of your outfit. The sailing community doesn’t shy away from injecting a burst of colour into the seascape. We’re known for outerwear with bright and visible tones, such as vibrant blues, reds, and yellows; a nice touch of interest in the sometimes-muted winter surroundings. WOMEN’S WEAR

work is done. The Ocoopa Hand Warmer has a rechargeable 5200 mAh battery that doubles as a power bank, and boasts three different temperature settings. A cosy winter hat, and lightweight neck and faceguard will protect against the wind. We love Crew Clothing’s Merino Cashmere Hat (at 70% merino wool and 30% cashmere); it’s super-soft. (Incidentally, it’s reportedly a myth that we lose most of our heat through our head – but the face and head are more sensitive to changes in temperature than the rest of the body, which is why it always feels nice to keep these extremities warm.) Insulated socks are of course essential for keeping feet warm in colder temperatures; synthetic materials designed for moisturewicking and insulation are good choices. Sealskinz’ Worstead Waterproof Cold Weather Knee Length Socks are also windproof and breathable; the inner lining is crafted from fine merino wool, another popular choice to insulate and regulate temperature in colder conditions.

A capsule coastal wardrobe is very easy to create. For women’s wear, curate your look around a beach-hued palate of blue, beige, white and brown. You can add accent colours, such as blue, red or yellow, with accessories and outerwear. Start with indigo jeans or corduroy trousers, a tailored button-up shirt in blue or white, and add a selection of warm sweaters – an oatmeal-hued cable knit never goes out of fashion, while a woollen Breton-striped jumper gives a nod to our nautical heritage. Ponchos are de rigour this season, as are thick cardigans and turtleneck jumpers in luxurious yarns, for longevity, warmth and timeless style. Cashmere ponchos, derived from the soft undercoat of cashmere goats, offer a lightweight and cosy option for milder days. Alpaca wool, derived from the fleece of the alpaca, is soft, lightweight, and hypoallergenic, offering warmth without heaviness. Team with brown leather fashion boots, or winter deck shoes. For wetter days, a hooded gilet or padded jacket in nautical colours will look the part.

MEN’S WEAR For men’s wear, start with neutral or navy chinos or corduroy trousers, and team with blue-themed polo and rugby tops and woollen sweaters in black or navy, or colourful Fair Isle pattern. This traditional design, drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings and colours of the Shetland Islands, includes repeating motifs inspired by nature, such as geometric shapes and florals. A true winter wardrobe staple. Fisherman’s smocks are a staple garment for the practical nautical wardrobe. Made from quality sail cloth cotton drill, and hard wearing, they are an eternally useful cover up. Choose from traditional V-neck smocks with internal pockets or more contemporary, hooded versions. This season the nautical retailers boast rails of smocks resplendent in cherry reds, dark pinks and brick-red colours. Accessorise with a canvas fisherman’s hat, simple bandana and brown deck shoes. (The capsule men’s wardrobe is not complete without an indigo-blue, French work jacket. These 100% cotton canvas jackets are great for late winter days ashore, and again, the red-hued versions are popular.) KIDS’ WEAR For children, this season the look is colourful and playful. In addition to the classic Breton-striped staples, look out for wider stripes, including vertical patterns, and funky animal prints on accessories like scarves and headbands. Bold geometric patterns in bold, bright, and oversized shapes look great on sweatshirts and sweaters, and for girls, vintage-inspired floral prints are popular, with ditsy patterns and soft colour palettes.

Don’t forget to pack your sunglasses with wrap-around lenses; Triggernaut’s Transmitter Sunglasses boast ultra violet protection and polarized lenses to protect the eyes from sunlight and glare. Do try on the full accessory ensemble before heading out, to ensure the elements are all comfortable together. (Pack a changing robe or aquaparker to preserve your dignity and warmth when changing clothes – they’re over-sized and big enough for you to pull your arms inside, for changing. Cape Cove’s lovely, Snug Changing Coat is water repellent and shower proof, with deep pockets, one of which thoughtfully includes a sunglasses arm holder.)

BROKERAGE BOATS 4 SALE

R

ecent weeks have seen an influx of UK based boats being listed for sale, right across the spectrum from small day boats to large expensive motor yachts, cruisers and sailing yachts the market is awash with new listings, that don’t appear to be selling as fast as they were. That said, were not yet seeing massive price drops and sellers seem confident in holding out for that extra buck when their sale goes through. Throughout the covid period boat prices rocketed due to an influx of new demand and interest from people taking to the water for the first time, it now seems that many of these people are looking to bail out, the problem they are being presented with seems that these people are looking to regain the over inflated price they paid for their boat during the boom period, savvy buyers however seem to be holding strong, confident of a crash in value leaving many boats sitting on the shelf for much longer than we are more recently used to. Walking and talking along the pontoons it would also seem that many established and long-term boaters are looking sell up and leave the boating lifestyle behind them, some looking to downsize but many looking to leave, marinas that were once boasting 10 year waiting lists for berths now seem to have a vacant berth at just a moment’s notice, keen to sign you up into a 12-month contract. So has the bubble burst for boat sales, is the market going to crash? A good indication of what the UK market is going to do is the American market, typically we seem to follow in their footsteps when it comes to market trends, with similar events rolling out in the UK some 3-6 months after they unfold in the states. A little research will tell you that American boat sales are slowing, fast. However, the way boats are purchased in America are typically different to how us Brits buy boats, with more and more boats being bought using marine finance in the U.S, the majority of British bought boats are transacted in good old-fashioned cash, or bank transfer in the modern day. So could this be a differing factor on this occasion that does indeed make the UK a better place for boat ownership this time around. Boat owners who are already financed into a long term agreement, will be using their cash income, salary, pension to pay a monthly cost to buy their

boat, whereas a cash buyer has already parted with and written that money off, so it would seem they are only selling to release that equity tied up during a period of unsettled economic times instead of panic selling their boat to reduce their fixed monthly outgoings whilst rising costs of living and inflation continue to take their toll. So, whilst it may make sense now to release large amounts of cash from your purchased boat, some might say that with that cash placed into a high interest account or investment fund, you could now buy a much cheaper boat than you could have done a few months ago. So, with your money well invested and seeing a good return on interest it may be a good time to take advantage of a variable rate marine mortgage, balanced out by a good interest rate from either a savings account or investment fund. Many marine mortgages offer a zero penalty for early settlement, meaning as soon as the market stabilizes you could draw on your investment and settle any mortgage you have taken early, buying you a cheaper boat with little to no interest if you invest your cash right. There is unquestionably a lot to think about, so it is well worth speaking with a financial advisor and marine mortgage specialist for some sound advice. But done right, there really is no need to panic sell your boat and leave the waterside living that you love so much behind, a quick knee jerk reaction never served anybody well, so slow things

down take stock and if you love your life on the water take some sound advice and now really could be the ideal time to buy a boat! Undoubtably, yes, the market in boat sales has slowed down and will continue to slow, the still inflated prices of boats will slowly drop, and research suggests that within the next year may see all-time lows. Making your money work for you and capitalising on the opportunity that presents itself then no, the boat market will not crash, it will change, but in my opinion for the better, creating a pool of opportunity for the savvy boaters out there! If you currently own a boat and are thinking of begrudgingly selling due to rising costs and affordability, stop for a moment and think things through, is it ever a good time to sell when prices are on the decline? Have you considered changing your style of boating, a slower cruise can save you thousands of pounds a year compared to a high-speed jaunt across the channel or bay. Marinas are becoming more and more competitive as demand for their berths start to fall, have you thought about moving marina to somewhere slightly cheaper? Boating doesn’t need to be all champagne and eating out, using your fully fitted and equipped boat, will not only give you a whole new boating experience but it will also save you thousands of pounds a year on dinning, cocktails and copious amounts of fizz, entertaining or hosting on board is also a great way to build a community on the pontoon, invite your neighbours over, eat, drink and be merry, you’ll be amazed at how much fun you can have on board with like-minded people.

money saving hacks to consider when boating… 2

RUN YOUR BOAT AT ITS MOST EFFICIENT CRUISING SPEED TO SAVE FUEL

CONSIDER FRACTIONAL BOAT OWNERSHIP

If you have a sailboat you’re in luck—any time the wind cooperates your fuel costs will be around zero. But powerboaters will see a drastic reduction in their fuel bill if they run their boat at its most efficient speed—this involves knowing what it means to trim a boat, and how to properly trim a boat, which will improve its performance and fuel economy. All boats have a “sweet spot” where they get the best MPG .

Why own 100-percent of a boat, if you’ll only be using it half the time? There’s nothing wrong with sharing your pride and joy with another owner or owners, and the financial benefits of sharing the cost can be huge.

3

4

KEEP YOUR BOAT AND ITS POWER SYSTEM PROPERLY MAINTAINED

BRUSH UP ON BOAT TRAINING

This includes things like making sure the bottom isn’t covered in growth and keeping the engine(s) in good running condition so you don’t lose efficiency. But keeping the boat well maintained will also pay off in the long run, because expensive break-downs and equipment failure becomes much less likely.

It’s always a good idea to continually expand your knowledge and skillset when it comes to boating, and taking a boating class can help you do just that. The better educated you are the less likely it is that you’ll make a costly mistake while running your boat. Plus, in some cases being better educated can get you an insurance reduction.

TWEAK YOUR BOATING HABITS

You may be able to save money on your mooring by shopping around and considering moving marinas, pricing can vary widely depending on the marina’s location and amenities.

Whilst owning and running a boat is a luxury some costs cannot be avoided, however the things we do and habits we find ourselves stuck in when using the boat can add up unnecessarily, eating and drinking onboard and not continually dinning at restaurants or visiting pubs and cocktail bars can save you thousands over the course of a boating season, so mix things up a little, you’d be amazed at how much fun you can have onboard!

Taking these considerations into account will help you make an informed decision about boat ownership, ensuring that it aligns with your preferences, lifestyle, and financial situation. As boat owners ourself, we couldn’t recommend becoming a boat owner enough and we welcome you to browse some of the fantastic boats for sale in our Brokerage Boats 4 Sale feature in a hope that you might just find what you are looking for!
