Saving Nature
OUR COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY TO CONSERVE ENGLAND’S WILD SPACES.
Conservation is the key to the future writes Dr. Thomas Lewis, Head of Conservation at Longleat
If you have the chance to step outside at dawn in late Spring before the hustle and bustle of the day begins, you'll hear the dawn chorus. It doesn't matter if you're in a city or in the countryside, the birds will be singing! But even in the wildest spots, you'll only be hearing a fraction of the species that would have been singing at dawn 100 years ago. According to last year’s State of Nature report, species studied have declined on average by 19% since 1970 across the UK. We’ve also heard Sir David Attenborough stating that the UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world, which is a sobering thought. But, whilst the picture may seem bleak, I know that conservation action
makes a difference. The good news is that there is a lot of positive progress being made today to both reverse the decline in biodiversity loss and to preserve native wildlife. And there are also many practical ways that people can help to conserve nature at home too.
VARIETY
IS THE SPICE OF LIFE!
As head of conversation at Longleat I’m in a very privileged position. My work helps to ensure the survival of some of the world’s most endangered creatures. But - while many people may immediately think of our amazing animals from Africa, Asia and Australia - a lot of my work is focused on preserving the habitats on our 10,000-acre
Estate so that native species can thrive. Longleat is a very mixed Estate, comprising parkland, managed woodland and farmland, as well as Cheddar Gorge with its cliffs and subterranean stalactite caves. From Lord and Lady Bath to colleagues right across the Longleat team, we have a huge responsibility to protect each habitat and natural ecosystem in our care. That's why we are always striving to improve the habitats we have on the estate, taking 'nature positive' approach. For example, Cheddar Gorge is the only place in the UK where the ‘Cheddar Pink’ – a stunning endemic orchid – grows. It’s a protected plant species and we take

our responsibility to protect its habitat incredibly seriously by managing its grassland home, preventing woodland from encroaching too far.
Closer to Longleat House, two pairs of beavers which were discovered on the Estate in 2020 have provided an amazing boost to our conservation efforts. Through their natural behaviour of gnawing saplings and damming streams, we’ve now got several large pools on the Estate. We know they are living side-by-side with water voles who have thrived thanks to the waterway management and predator controls we have in place across the park. As a result, we’re now looking at the feasibility of reintroducing other creatures which thrive in large, still pools. For example, the medicinal leech, which has been used as a ‘cure’ throughout history (as their name suggests) is only found in a few spots around the country today, there are also pool frogs which became extinct in the wild nearly 25 years ago. Both species will thrive in the pools our beavers have made. And whilst they’re not the most glamourous of creatures, they are incredibly important from a biodiversity perspective.
All over the UK once extinct or rare species like pine martens, white storks and nightingales are recovering following incredible conservation work. We are working to make the Longleat Estate as attractive to these recovering species as possible, and we already have
some wild boar. Like the beavers, they weren’t reintroduced by Longleat as part of an official programme. They’re on the estate as the result of wandering here themselves or so-called ‘Guerrilla Rewilding’, the practice where unknown individuals release native animals into the wild on an ad hoc basis. The ethics of this are questionable but we do have plenty of woodland for them to forage in! And we want to increase the quality of the habitat we already have so that native species can thrive here if and when they return. For example, pine martens need tree hollows to sleep in and rear their young. We have lots of ancient trees with natural hollows, but we’re putting up pine marten boxes on our younger trees too. It all helps!
COLLABORATING ON CONSERVATION
In addition to our own conservation work, we support the preservation of native species in other parts of the UK too. For example, we’re part of a UKwide red squirrel breeding programme coordinated by the Welsh Mountain Zoo and others, which helps to release reds born in captivity into the wild in those pockets of the UK where there are no grey squirrels (as the two can’t co-exist). Recently, reds have been reintroduced
GIVING RED SQUIRRELS A HELPING HAND
onto Anglesey and are really thriving, which is a great success story for the programme.
We contribute to nationwide wildlife counts too, including feeding data about waterbirds found at Longleat into the national Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS). This is a joint project between the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds), JNCC (Joint Nature Conservation Committee) and BTO (British Trust for Ornithology). In fact, our longstanding relationship with the BTO goes all the way back to 1957! One of their volunteers – Chris White – has been coming to Longleat each month between October and March since the 1990s to count the birds on our lakes. This data helps to identify trends in the abundance and distribution of non-breeding waterbirds and - thanks to Chris - we know that the number of little grebes on our Half Mile Lake has increased from around nine to over 40! He puts it down to the fact we’ve stopped allowing people to fish on the lake, which means fewer disturbances from humans as well as an abundance of food. It’s fantastic to see that by taking steps to preserve our lake habitat for waterbirds, our actions are having a positive impact.
Red squirrels are an iconic native British species which, although once common, are now incredibly rare in the wild today. To reverse this decline, there is a concerted effort amongst wildlife organisations and conservation charities to reintroduce red squirrels into protected habitats where they can thrive. Longleat is part of the UK-wide cooperative Red Squirrel breeding programme coordinated by the Welsh Mountain Zoo to release red squirrels bred in captivity into the wild in Wales.
In October 2008 six reds were released on the Plas Newydd Estate on Anglesey. They were first held in woodland enclosures for a few weeks, then released into the deciduous woodland. It’s a good news story, as the original red squirrels have bred successfully and now red squirrels can now be found throughout the Estate.

BACK TO NATURE
Everything we do at Longleat is about slowing, and then reversing, biodiversity loss. And more than this, we want to play an active role in building nature back up again. We know that when whole ecosystems are restored, communities of species can thrive – so that’s what we’re aiming for across the Estate. Stakeholder engagement and collaborative working are vital to scale conservation efforts and ensure we’re aiming for the biggest positive impact possible. For example, if we can encourage local farmers around Longleat to turn marginal land over to scrubland, we’d see the return of nightingales and turtle doves, which would be amazing! It’s all about boosting natural processes and enabling the regeneration of trees and plants so that insects, birds and animals can return.
A conservationist’s work is never done, of course. But the good news is that I don’t have to do it alone. Everyone can play a part in conservation, whether you’re a landowner or you have a window box! And I believe it’s everybody’s responsibility to do so. We’re so lucky in the UK to have such wonderful countryside, shorelines and woodland to explore. If we work together to protect these wild places and allow native species to not only survive but thrive, what a rich orchestra of nature we could all enjoy for generations to come!

BADMINTON BOUND
MARS Badminton Horse Trials, will take place from Wednesday 8th to Sunday 12th May 2024.
Badminton Horse Trials was founded by the 10th Duke of Beaufort in 1949. It is the world's oldest and most prestigious horse trials and one of only seven international five-star (highest level) events worldwide, of which Badminton is the oldest and is considered the most prestigious and best known - the 'Wimbledon' of eventing.
The event is staged within the beautiful grounds of the Badminton Estate in Gloucestershire. This annual spectacle offers a great family day out, with children and dogs very welcome to enjoy great hospitality options, shopping, top level equestrian sport and more in a stunning location.
Badminton has always been synonymous with preparation for the Olympic Games and this year the Olympic Games will take place in Paris in July.
The reigning Badminton champion is Ros Canter (GBR), she is the reigning European champion and world number 2 and she will be one the favourites to secure an Olympic slot this summer
Great Britain are the current Olympic and European team champions of eventing; in addition Yasmin Ingham is the reigning world champion. Britain's Oliver Townend, the runner-up at Badminton in 2023, is the world number one; seven of the top 10 in the FEI world eventing rankings are British. Eventing is one of few sports in which men and women compete on equal terms; the current ratio is 39 male winners to 28. The age range of competitors can stretch from 21 to 60.

BADMINTON HORSE TRIALS
...FROM THE ARCHIVE
Lucinda Green is the most successful Badminton rider; she won six times on six different horses from 1973 to 1984; Capt Mark Phillips and the New Zealander Sir Mark Todd have won four times apiece. Todd's first and last Badminton wins were 31 years apart - he came out of an eight-year retirement for his fourth victory.
Sheila Willcox is the only rider to have scored a hat-trick of wins, in 1957-59; Ian Stark is the only rider to have finished first and second in the same year, in 1988. The last back-to-back winner was Pippa Funnell in 2003.
Jane Holderness-Roddam (nee Bullen), who won in 1968, is the longest-standing living winner;
she was a full-time nurse at the time and went on to become the first woman to compete in the Olympic eventing competition, winning team gold in Mexico. There have only been five directors of Badminton in 75 years. Jane Tuckwell, the first female director, who took over in 2019, celebrates her 50th anniversary of starting work in the horse trials office.

Badminton 2024 promises to be a memorable weekend, as the event celebrates 75 years! Badminton Horse Trials have become the cornerstone of equestrian sport, captivating enthusiasts and spectators alike with its blend of athleticism, grace, and tradition
Beginning in 1949, when the 10th Duke of Beaufort, conceived the idea of organizing a three-day eventing competition on the grounds of the historic Badminton Estate. The inaugural event took place in 1949 and featured just 22 competitors. Little did they know, this modest beginning would lay the foundation for what would become one of the most prestigious equestrian events in the world.
EVOLUTION AND EXPANSION
Over the years, the Badminton Horse Trials evolved and expanded, attracting top riders from around the globe and growing into a highlight of the equestrian calendar. In 1953, the event became one of the first to be included in the newly established FEI (Fédération Equestre Internationale) calendar. Throughout the decades, Badminton has witnessed numerous memorable moments, from legendary partnerships between horse and rider to thrilling displays of horsemanship and courage.
ICONIC CROSS-COUNTRY COURSE
Central to the allure of the Badminton Horse Trials is its legendary cross-country course, widely regarded as one of the most challenging and prestigious in the world. Designed by renowned course designers such as Hugh Thomas and Giuseppe della Chiesa, the course weaves its way through the natural landscape of the Badminton Estate, presenting riders with a formidable array of obstacles including water jumps, ditches, and imposing combinations. Each year, riders face the ultimate test of skill, bravery, and partnership as they tackle this formidable course in pursuit of glory.
CHAMPIONS AND LEGENDS
Throughout its history, Badminton has been graced by an illustrious roster of champions and legends who have left an indelible mark on the sport of eventing. From the legendary Lucinda Green, who claimed an unprecedented six victories between 1973 and 1984, to modern-day stars such as William Fox-Pitt and Pippa Funnell, whose names are synonymous with equestrian excellence, Badminton has been the stage for countless moments of triumph and achievement.
CONTINUED LEGACY
The legacy of this iconic event continues to endure, inspiring generations of riders and enthusiasts around the world. While the sport of eventing has evolved and changed over the years, the spirit of Badminton remains constant – a celebration of the timeless bond between horse and rider, and a testament to the enduring power of equestrian sport.

HELPING OUR TEAMS FOR PARIS 2024
Being an Olympic Games year, Badminton is pleased to announce our fundraising partner for 2024 will be the British Equestrian Federation Fund which provides additional support to our Olympic and Paralympic teams. The Equestrian World Class Program and the championship teams are generously funded by the National Lottery, via UK Sport however, every four years extra fundraising takes place to ensure our horses and riders can go the extra mile - it’s often those additional special touches that can make the difference between a medal or finishing fourth. Jim Eyre, British Equestrian CEO said, “Everyone who supports the Fund at Badminton plays a part in the British Equestrian Teams’ quest for medals at the Olympic and Paralympic Games next year. We’re looking forward to meeting and engaging with fans at Badminton and rallying support as we prepare for Paris 2024”

YHC’s Groom, Alex
The dukedom of Beaufort was created in 1682, being granted to Henry, 3rd Marquess of Worcester in reward for his service to the Stuart monarchy. The Manor of Badminton was purchased by the Worcesters in 1608, originally for a younger son of the family. The Estates came back to the main branch of the family in 1655 and in the middle 1660s
rebuilding of the old house started. The 1st Duke of Beaufort retrieved the family fortunes which had suffered badly in the civil wars and made Badminton his home. The house today therefore dates from 17th and 18th centuries. The 1st Duke appears to have been his own architect – spending around £30,000 over 30 years, a vast sum for the time.
Badminton House is now the family home of the 12th Duke of Beaufort, Harry Somerset who has always taken an active role in the event. His Grace’s father, David, who passed away in August 2017, was President of the Horse Trials and was himself a very successful rider in the sport, being placed second here in 1959.

RECAP OF 2023
The 2023 event was held during the Coronation of King Charles weekend so the event had a different feel and timetable.
With the Coronation taking place on the Saturday, our traditional xc day, the event started a day later. The second day of dressage took place on the Saturday, starting early, so we could have a long lunch break enabling our visitors to watch the Coronation on the big screen if they wished. The crowd embraced the Coronation theme and many had picnics and dressed very patriotically
Rosalind Canter won Badminton Horse Trials 2024, presented by Mars Equestrian, in the best possible style: with a clear show jumping round and a huge winning margin - 15 penalties - the largest of modern times.
She led from the start of the competition on Michelle Saul’s 11-year-old Lordships Graffalo, a horse that has won the hearts of a cheerful Badminton crowd, who remained undaunted by the terrible weather on a historic coronation weekend.
“He’s an out-and-out event horse and it’s a privilege to have him in your life,” said Ros, 37, who was also ninth on Pencos Royal Jewel. “He has character in every pore and makes us laugh every day.
“I think I was at my calmest when I entered the arena, but it’s been a long day. He jumped a bit with his head in the air, but he wanted to clear the fences.”
With this victory, Ros becomes the fifth rider in history - and the third British woman, following in the distinguished footsteps of Lucinda Green and Ginny Eliot - to win both Badminton and the world championships, which she did in 2018.
Oliver Townend finished second on Karen Shuter, Angela Hislop and Val Ryan’s Ballaghmor Class, a 16-year-old horse with an extraordinary record of his own: he has never finished lower than fifth in a five-star event, winning two of them, Burghley and Kentucky, plus an Olympic gold medal in Tokyo.
“He’s unreal,” said Oliver. “He’s had too many second places - blame the jockey - but it’s a huge relief that he’s had yet another good result.”
Austin O’Connor slipped a place to third on the Salty Syndicate’s Colorado Blue, having hit two rails as opposed to Oliver’s one, but he is the first Irish rider in the top three since Jessica Harrington and Amoy in 1985.
“Naturally I’m a bit disappointed, but to be on the podium with two heroes - two of the best riders in the world - is pretty
amazing,” he said. “The result is personally great for me, but I hope it will give Irish eventing a lift.”
Tom McEwen conjured a beautiful clear round on his Olympic team gold medallist Toledo de Kerser to rise to fourth place; Tom Jackson scored his best ever Badminton result, rising five places to fifth on his exciting ride Capels Hollow Drift; and Gemma Tattersall, who unluckily had the very last rail down, finished sixth on Jalapeno, the highest placed mare.
World number one Tim Price finished seventh for New Zealand on Vitali and Bubby Upton was eighth and highest placed under-25 rider on Cola. Three-time Badminton winner Pippa Funnell, who rode such a superb early cross-country round on Majas Hope, was 10th, and French first-timer Luc Chateau finished 11th on Viens du Mont, a rise of 26 places after dressage.
Ros Canter paid tribute to her team, especially her mother, Heather (“she keeps the wheel turning”) and trainer, Caroline Moore - and to the spectators. “Thank you for being such a great audience and for sticking it out in this miserable weather,” she said, although no amount of rain could dampen Badminton’s joy at such a worthy winner.

To every solo horse rider and equestrian team…
As a competitive rider, the pursuit of excellence has always been my guiding star. But in this quest, I’ve encountered a formidable adversary: the risk of overtraining. It’s a fine line between pushing for peak performance and pushing too far. This is my story, a firsthand account of how the Equestic SaddleClip became my ally in navigating this challenge.
The Awakening
My journey began with a relentless drive for higher jumps, faster turns, and flawless motions. Yet, in the silence that followed our rigorous sessions, I often wondered, “Have I asked too much of my partner?” That’s when I discovered Leon Rutten’s creation, the Equestic SaddleClip—a tool born from a blend of equestrian passion and engineering innovation, designed to enhance the bond between horse and rider through insightful care.
The Companion
Integrating the SaddleClip into our routine was a revelation. It was like having a conversation with my horse without words. The device, with its 99% accuracy, offered a window into the unseen—the subtle cues of strain or the silent whispers of fatigue. Its real-time feedback became my guide, alerting me to the nuances of overtraining that I was too driven to see.
FEI/USDF RULES UPDATE
FEI, USDF and other national equestrian federations have acknowledged the Equestic SaddleClip for use in competitions. Check with your event organizer to ensure that competitors can utilize the device within competition guidelines, adhering to the latest equestrian sporting. www.equestic.com www.instagram.com/equestic
The Balance
EQUESTIC VALIDATION
The Equestic SaddleClip has been rigorously tested and validated, achieving a remarkable 99% accuracy rate in monitoring equine motion performance metrics. This validation underscores its reliability for riders seeking precise and actionable insights into their horse's training and well-being.
The challenge of striving for high performance without compromising my horse’s welfare became less daunting. I learned to read the signs, to understand when to push and when to pause. Like Debbie, who adjusted her training based on the SaddleClip’s alerts, I too found wisdom in its data. It wasn’t just about preventing injury; it was about fostering a sustainable path to excellence.
The Insight
The acceptance by the FEI and USDF of the SaddleClip for use in competitions reassured me that my pursuit of excellence was aligned with the highest standards of care. Yet, what truly underscored our success was witnessing our horses recover and thrive after setbacks—overcoming challenges like a torn muscle or micro tears in the fetlock ligaments, experiences shared by Gaye, Wendy, and many others.
The Journey Continues
Today, I stand on the cusp of each competition with quiet confidence. The Equestic SaddleClip is more than a device; it’s a testament to our journey together, a journey marked by care, understanding, and a shared aspiration for greatness. It’s a reminder that in the delicate dance of equestrian sport, performance and welfare can indeed harmonize, guided by the light of innovation and the strength of our bond.

NEW OFQUAL REGULATED QUALIFICATIONS BREAKING NEWS
iPET Network has launched three innovative new courses which will help aspiring veterinary physiotherapists and animal sports massage and rehabilitation therapists to get the qualifications in a brand new way.
Working with leading veterinary physiotherapist Wendy Vaughan, Director of The Academy of Veterinary Physiotherapy and of the Academy of Veterinary Physiotherapy, iPET Network is now offering a Level 6 Diploma in Veterinary Physiotherapy, a Level 5 Diploma in Animal Sports Massage and Rehabilitation and a Level 4 Diploma in Animal Sports Massage, all of which are regulated by Ofqual.
The degree equivalent Level 6 qualification is suitable for those currently working as a Veterinary Physiotherapist seeking formal recognition through a regulated qualification, as well as all of those who would like to work in this growth field, including existing dog groomers, equine grooms, hydrotherapists, trainers and massage practitioners.
These comprehensive qualifications are made up of practical and theoretical learning across a variety of animal species, with the practical elements focusing on the two main species of canines and equines, allowing learners to get recognition for their knowledge and practical skills in a vocational and friendly way.
Candidates will learn advanced study skills, personal development, professional development, resilience and wellbeing from people who have extensive experience of what it takes to be successful in the industry.
The blended learning, flexible and accessible courses will be delivered by Wendy and her team at The Academy of Veterinary Physiotherapy.
Wendy, who is a IRVAP, RAMP and AHPR registered therapist, said: “I am proud to have worked with iPET Network to develop this trio of qualifications, which will make these fields of veterinary science more accessible than ever, while maintaining all important best practice.
“It was important when we created the courses that they had a strong focus on animal health, behaviour and welfare, including exploring themes such as social licence to practice.
“There are also key specifics relating to the industry, legislation, regulation and working effectively as part of the multi-disciplinary team, as well as a real focus on anatomy and physiology and musculoskeletal anatomy, with particular focus on function, orthopaedics and neurology, biomechanics and locomotion and exercise physiology including how commonly used equipment effects our animals.
“The course then builds on this with a strong focus on exercise prescription and rehabilitation, including physiotherapy and rehabilitation for post-surgical, neurological, juvenile, geriatric, nonambulatory and respiratory patients and for palliative and end of life care.
“For anyone wishing to qualify it is important to learn soft tissue pathology, injury, illness, disease and musculoskeletal dysfunction, concepts of pain, pain management and advanced concepts of tissue healing which are all covered in these qualifications.
“Building on a strong foundation of sports massage and soft tissue skills the courses then teach mobilisation techniques, and the safe and effective use of electro-physical agents (EPAs) and covers advanced clinical reasoning skills and how to conduct physiotherapy assessments and design effective and measurable treatment plans.”
Upon completion of each level, candidates are eligible to register on the next higher qualification enabling study up to degree equivalent.
Sarah Mackay and Fern Gresty of iPET Network, said: “We are thrilled to be offering these high quality high level qualifications, which not only make these fields accessible to more learners, but ensure that high standards are at the forefront of the industries we support.”

GLAMPING IN THE HEART OF THE BADMINTON HORSE TRIALS
Public- “Do you get nervous before the cross country at Badminton?
Alex Bragg- “Ummm, YES! If I didn’t I don’t think I’d be human….have you seen the size of the jumps out there!”
“That’s one of the more printable questions our guest speakers got asked this year. Alex was also asked about lucky underwear! He was such a good sport!” says Emily Lee with a chuckle. She is co-founder of the Badminton Retreat glamping site along with her husband Barny. “We’re very lucky to have had some great guests join us in the evenings, and Laura Collett came for a second time last year looking super glamourous. She handled Paul Tapners’ heckling with great aplomb, he’s so naughty! It’s so good of them to give their time and the guests really enjoy the talks. They often stay for a while afterwards to mingle and chat, perhaps have a vodka and tonic (Laura) or a pint (Alex), it’s a really lovely relaxed atmosphere”.
Launched in 2019 the Badminton Retreat was heralded a resounding success with guests and day visitors enjoying the luxury glamping facilities, bar and restaurant situated close to the action on the edge of the cross-country course at Huntsman’s Close.
“We start planning for the next year almost straight after we’ve packed and cleared everything off site for the current one!” says Emily. “We have a de-brief with all the team to identify any issues that might have arisen, what worked well, what could be improved upon, go through feedback
received from guests, and think about what we can add for the next time. There’s a tremendous amount to organise behind the scenes and we are dedicated to making it a really special experience for guests and visitors alike.”
Barny heads the team that build the Retreat site which takes around a month of long days and hard work. “It’s pretty full on for about four to five weeks but we have a great team with us, and the reward is the beaming faces of guests when they arrive. We now have quite a few returning guests both from the UK, Australia and the USA,
who were very quick to book up for this year, so that’s really great!”
“We started a pop-up glamping site in 2017 for the Glastonbury music festival, aptly named the Glastonbury Retreat, which proved to be very popular. With our eventing background it seemed an obvious next step to create a similar set up for the Badminton Horse Trials” explains Barny. “We’d already been running the marquee business for nearly 20 years and were looking for a way to branch out that still had some connection to the existing business and complimented it.”

Barny and Emily met while competing for Great Britain at a U-16 3 day event, and Emily continued to turn this into a career competing at 5-star level including Badminton. Since the arrival of their sons, Jonny and George, Emily has focussed on coaching and is a South West of England regional U-18 coach for British Eventing “becoming a mother makes you think about the wisdom of hurtling around a cross country course!” Barny achieved 4-star status in eventing before heading to university to study Business Studies and Finance. Working through the summer holidays for a marquee company gave him the inspiration to start his own marquee company in 2003, and Barny Lee Marquees has gone from strength to strength whilst remaining very much a family run business. Their older son Jonny (16) is an event rider competing at 2*, George (12) prefers art to horses!

FOvercoming Fear at its Core A Rider’s Path to Mastery
ear is a multifaceted emotion, intricately woven into the fabric of our psyche. For riders, it’s a silent adversary, lurking in the shadows, ready to pounce at the slightest hint of vulnerability. Yet, mastering fear is not merely about suppressing its symptoms; it’s about addressing the root causes that lie beneath the surface. In the realm of competition, where split-second decisions can mean the difference between victory and defeat, this mastery is essential to unlocking our full potential in the saddle.
Fear manifests itself in myriad ways, both subtle and overt. It can be the tightening grip on the reins, the shallow breaths that escape our lips, or the rapid pounding of our hearts against our chests. These physical manifestations betray the underlying tension within us, signalling to our horse that all may not be well and creating tension or poor decision making for them too. But fear isn’t just confined to the physical realm; it permeates our thoughts, our emotions, and our beliefs about ourselves and our abilities.
UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF FEAR ON RIDING PERFORMANCE
Fear, in its various forms, can significantly impact our riding performance at any level and in any discipline. Even experienced riders may grapple with doubts, nerves, or anxieties surrounding their performance. These emotions, if left unaddressed, can undermine our confidence and hinder our ability to perform at our best.
At its core, fear triggers a physiological response known as the “fight or flight” response. When faced with a perceived threat – whether it’s a daunting jump, a challenging course, or the pressure of competition – our bodies react instinctively, preparing us to either confront the threat head-on or flee from it. This response is characterized by increased heart rate, shallow breathing, muscle tension, and heightened alertness – all of which can impair our ability to communicate effectively with our horse and execute precise manoeuvres.
Moreover, fear can cloud our judgment, leading to indecision or hesitation at critical moments. It can cause us to secondguess ourselves, undermining our trust in our abilities and eroding our confidence in our horse. Left unchecked, these doubts can create a vicious cycle of self-doubt and anxiety, further exacerbating our fears and hindering our performance.
Addressing the symptoms of fear may provide temporary relief, but it’s akin to treating the symptoms of a disease without addressing its root cause. We must delve deeper, peeling back the layers of our psyche to uncover the origins of our fears. Perhaps it’s a past fall that has left us wary of pushing our limits, or maybe it’s a fear of judgment that stems from childhood insecurities. Whatever the case may be, confronting these root causes is the first step towards true mastery.
THE IMPORTANCE OF ADDRESSING ROOT CAUSES
While it’s tempting to focus solely on managing the symptoms of fear – whether through relaxation techniques, positive self-talk, or visualisation exercises – true mastery requires us to confront the root causes that lie beneath the surface. These root causes may stem from past experiences, such as falls or accidents, or from deeply ingrained beliefs about us and our abilities.
By addressing these root causes, we can create lasting change that extends far beyond the confines of the arena. We can cultivate a mindset of resilience and courage that empowers us to navigate the challenges of riding and competing with grace and confidence. This work needs to take place off-horse, as part of our mental preparation for competition, and requires a commitment to personal growth and development.
But how do we embark on this journey of self-discovery and transformation? It begins with a willingness to confront our fears in our brain head-on, to shine a light into the darkest corners of our minds. Seeking support from a qualified and experienced mindset coach or finding the right mindset program can provide invaluable guidance and perspective, helping us navigate the labyrinth of our emotions with clarity and insight. Through introspection and reflection, we can unearth the underlying beliefs and thought
34 | SPRING 2024 Your Horse & Country Magazine MINDSET
patterns that fuel our fears, shining a light on the shadows that lurk within.
Moreover, we must recognise that this work extends far beyond the confines of the arena. It’s not just about conquering fear in the heat of competition; it’s about cultivating a mindset of resilience and courage that transcends the saddle. This requires a commitment to personal growth and development, both on and off-horse. By cultivating a mindset of curiosity and self-awareness, we can navigate the challenges of riding with grace and confidence, knowing that we have the tools to confront whatever obstacles may lie in our path, both literally and figuratively!
For Felicity Collins, the journey towards overcoming fear has been transformative. Before competing at her first Badminton at just 24 years old, Felicity recalls
moments of doubt and uncertainty, of setbacks and challenges. Yet, through perseverance and determination, she emerged stronger and more resilient than ever before. By addressing the root causes of her fears, she unlocked a newfound sense of freedom and confidence in the saddle.
Felicity says “Reflecting back, the positive rewards I reaped from Jenni’s coaching come my first Badminton cross country day in 2022, actually stemmed from work we had been doing for a long time before this. Mindset is an ongoing journey, but having said that, the progress I have made is clear. Being in the start box at Badminton and feeling a strong sense of focus and calm rather than churning fear was a huge milestone. For me, it’s more about digging deep into my mind to understand myself, my habits and my worries. People used to say to me, “If it makes you so nervous, why do you do it?”. A few years back, I was unable to answer that, and it made me wonder whether they were onto something. Using Jenni’s processes, we began to break it down and better understand the thought process of my mind. I managed to work out a lot of my ‘fear’ was based around making a mistake or letting my horse down, or the people around me. This could result in me overthinking, which
could sometimes interfere with my natural ‘feel’. Working this out was the first step, and I found Jenni’s advice of putting this information into practice at training or smaller competitions really helped when the bigger ones came around. Jenni taught me how to not just think of the memory, but tap into the feeling, and train my brain to take confidence from past performances. Some techniques can have an instant effect, but Jenni has shown me that working on your mindset is like going to the gym for your brain, and the right support and consistency is important.”
EMBRACING FEAR AS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR GROWTH
Fear is not something to be avoided or suppressed; it’s an integral part of the riding experience. By embracing fear as an opportunity for growth and self-discovery, we can harness its energy and use it to propel ourselves forward on our journey to mastery in riding. Together, with your horse by your side and a commitment to addressing the root causes of fear, you can conquer any challenge that comes your way. So, the next time you feel fear creeping in, embrace it as a sign that you’re pushing your boundaries and stepping outside your comfort zone. With dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to confront the root causes of your fears, you can conquer any challenge that comes your way, both in the saddle and in life.

STRATEGIES FOR ADDRESSING ROOT CAUSES
There are several strategies we can employ to address the root causes of our fears and cultivate a mindset of resilience and courage:
MINDFULNESS
Practice mindfulness techniques to cultivate a sense of presence and awareness in the moment. This can help you stay grounded and centred, even in the face of fear-inducing situations as well as when you are riding and need to be focused on your horse
SEEKING SUPPORT
Much of this change cannot be done on your own or to yourself. Reach out to a qualified and experienced mindset coach for guidance and support.
Online programs are also highly effective – providing they are set up to make changes to your brain’s wiring and not simply teach you the theory.
VISUALISATION
Use visualisation techniques to imagine yourself overcoming challenges and achieving success in the saddle. This can help rewire your brain to associate fear with opportunity rather than threat
SELF REFLECTION
Take the time to reflect on past experiences and identify any patterns or triggers that contribute to your fears. Journaling can be a helpful tool for gaining clarity and insight into your thoughts and emotions.
COGNITIVE RESTRUCTURING
Challenge negative beliefs and thought patterns that fuel your fears, replacing them with more empowering narratives that bolster your confidence and selfbelief.

In the vast equestrian landscape, finding ideal bedding for horses can be daunting. But nestled in South Shropshire, Concord Straw Pellets, a family-run business, offers a game-changing solution. Co-founded by Suzanne and Rosie, horse enthusiasts, Concord Straw Pellets produces straw pellet bedding from top-quality British Wheat Straw, revolutionizing horse care routines with sustainability and convenience.
Proudly produced on their farm, Concord’s bedding ensures superior comfort and hygiene. Notably, their dust-extracted pellets undergo rigorous processing, heating to over 100 degrees, eliminating bacteria and dust particles. This creates a plush, safe resting place, promoting horse well-being.

Spring Ready BE MORE
We embrace the elegance of spring with Alan Paine
As the winter chill gives way to the gentle warmth of spring, the British countryside comes alive with renewed energy and the prospect of longer, lighter days. It’s a time of transformation, both in nature and in our wardrobes. From reliable waterproofs to lighter weight knits, with wellingtons still on standby nonetheless, spring country wear encapsulates timeless style and versatility. It’s time to review your transitional wardrobe and master the art of layering, so that you don’t have to retrieve your winter clothes from their vacuum-packed refuges every time the temperature changes. Heritage country wear brand Alan Paine explores the essential elements of spring country clothing to help you curate a seasonal wardrobe for now and years to come.
THE ALL-IMPORTANT WATERPROOF
As we all know, spring weather can be unpredictable, with sunny days giving way to sudden showers and brisk winds, so it’s not quite time to ditch the waterproof! A reliable waterproof jacket or coat therefore is a must. Performance synthetic fabrics are a popular option. Aside from being lightweight and easily packable in a bag, these types of fabrics are quick-drying and offer good moisture-wicking properties to keep you comfortable when you’re out and about enjoying the great outdoors.
Waterproof jackets are often made with durable materials that can withstand rough outdoor conditions. They’re designed to resist abrasions and tears from thorns and other nasties.
It’s still important to look for beneficial features such as adjustable storm cuffs to stop water running down your sleeves and a waterproof lining. A detachable
hood is also handy. Your jacket should also be breathable to help you regulate your temperature. Waterproof ratings and breathability ratings measure the level of waterproofing and breathability of a fabric used on a product. The higher the waterproof rating, the more waterproof the material will be and likewise with the breathability rating.
Armed with this knowledge it’s a matter of preference then when choosing a dependable waterproof. The Alan Paine Milwood jacket is your storm-ready companion; a master against the elements. Crafted from a robust Poly-Cotton blend the jacket comes with a handy detachable hood, roomy pockets and two-way zipper. And, if you’re a fan of muddy countryside walks, fear not because the coat is machine washable.
The lightweight all-weather protection Fernley field coat will take you through all the seasons, not just spring. The machine washable, water repellent coated waterproof boasts a host of useful features including a handy concealed in-collar detachable hood and has a striking Alan Paine print lining. If you’re looking for a waterproof to pop on in a flash, the contemporary Fernley cape is the perfect throw-on. Lightweight, yet fully protective and with adjustable side studs for a flattering shape, it has a handy hood and

waterproof zip. Keep in your bag or car for when showers strike.
Ideal for cooler autumn and spring days, is the next generation machine washable Didsmere coat. Crafted in a digitally printed waterproof and breathable coated Polyester and with a warm faux fur lining, the flattering coat also has hand-warmer pockets, roomy pockets and a lightweight temperature regulating filling. Side zips can be adjusted to aid movement and there’s a robust two-way zipper so you can open the coat at the top and bottom.
WHAT IS A MID-LAYER & DO YOU NEED ONE (OR TWO)?
If we’re getting technical, a typical layering system consists of: a base-layer for moisture management, a mid-layer for insulation and an outer layer for weather protection. However, we’re focusing on your spring country wardrobe essentials, not a skiing holiday or winter trek. At this time of year, the mid-layer is king.
A mid-layer can apply to a variety of garments, whether it’s a fleece, windstopper or a lightweight insulating jacket or gilet and which, depending on your requirements, offer varying degrees of insulation. In a nutshell, a mid-layer keeps you warm by insulating and trapping body heat whilst still being breathable enough to allow moisture to escape without making you feel clammy
right level of warmth accordingly. There are a number of options available and it’s important to remember that the warmth to weight ratio of a garment will determine how much warmth it provides for its weight; the material’s ability to trap body heat.
A fleece is highly versatile because they tend to dry quickly and their slightly fluffy construction will help to trap air and retain body heat. They are often available in different thicknesses. Alan Paine’s Aylsham gilet and jacket are good examples of this. An insulated jacket will provide an excellent warmth to weight ratio without the bulk. This is an especially good choice in cooler weather.
Alan Paine’s Calsall quilted jacket and gilet mid-layers contain renewably sourced DuPont® Sorona thermal filling for ultralightweight insulation. Both products are made from water repellent 100% recycled Polyester for added protection.
If the weather is poor then an insulated jacket is probably your best option, if it’s cold then a thicker fleece or softshell and, for milder days a thinner fleece or lightweight sweater. Sometimes the midlayer will be used as an outer layer if the weather is dry and wind-free.
Mid-layer garments which open at the front with a zip are your best choice; that way, if you get too warm, you can unzip it to cool off rather than having to remove the whole layer.
transition. Layer over a cotton shirt and style with your trusty denims for warm spring days and cooler summer evenings. Famed for its luxury knitwear for 117 years, Alan Paine’s Geelong knitwear is the perfect balance of lightness and warmth. Beautifully breathable, Geelong Lambswool gives a unique combination of warmth, softness and drape.
It’s a rare thing when the fashion cognoscenti and sports people share a mutual appreciation of an item of clothing, but Alan Paine’s iconic cricket sweater does just that. The enduring cotton cable knit was more or less unheard of before their founder, William Paine, evolved it into a cricket sweater in the early twenties. Now a staple of every collection, the timeless sweater retains its traditional cable structure but is enhanced by contemporary colours and trims and an updated fit. Whether you choose to channel your inner athlete and adopt the current trend for contemporary sportswear or embrace classic preppy style, their cotton cricket vee is a natural partner for jeans and summery trousers.
Your choice of midand activity so you

SPRING SUPER LAYER
Last, but certainly not least, when spring is in full swing, why not try a Cotton Cashmere knit? The fusion of Pima Cotton (Cotton of the Gods) and Cashmere creates the softest, most comfortable cotton blend. Wrap yourself in sheer luxury with a classic crew or vee neck or try a versatile wrap; ideal popped in your bag for a summer wedding or as a holiday cover-up.
Alan Paine’s Aylsham gilet is the all-round super layer that every country wardrobe needs. Exemplifying gilet greatness, the regular fit all-purpose gilet has two handy zipped pockets, an adjustable draw cord waist for maximum comfort, plus faux suede under collar and trims. Easily one of the most versatile items of clothing you’ll own, pop it over a shirt or under a jacket. Plus, there’s an Aylsham gilet for all the family.

FINISHING TOUCHES
A crisp cotton shirt is the cornerstone of your spring wardrobe. Alan Paine’s shirt collection is crafted from a soft, minimal iron (hurrah!) cotton/elastane blend for a flexible, comfortable fit. The easy-care wonders have a darted, flattering feminine fit and are cut to a longer length so no need to worry about becoming untucked. There’s a whole host of country designs to choose from.
Complete your spring country look with carefully chosen accessories that add a touch of elegance to your ensemble. Add a pop of colour with a felt fedora or a lightweight scarf or wrap. If you’ve never been tempted to try a hat, then the Richmond fedora is the one to try. It’s incredibly versatile and will complete any outfit whether it’s jeans and a gilet or an elegant tweed coat. You can wear it at the races, walking the dog or for a weekend trip to the pub. And, if you’re having a bad hair day, no-one need ever know!
TIMELESS TWEED
Enduring and effortlessly stylish, tweed is the mainstay of many a country wardrobe. Even in the warmer spring months, a tweed blazer, mid-length coat or gilet paired with a crisp shirt or lightweight knit and jeans strikes the balance between town and country, countryside walks and pub outings.
Alan Paine’s mid-thigh coat is cut to a super flattering length. With a water repellent outer, and striking floral lining, the coat has an eye-catching contrast faux suede top collar with matching faux suede trims on the sleeves and flap pockets. Gold coloured branded buttons adorn the cuffs and coat front but, if you fancy
a change, it comes with a set of imitation horn buttons.
If you’re a fan of a shorter jacket, a classically styled tweed blazer is a transseasonal must-have. Dress up or dress down depending on the occasion.

SpringClean&Declutter
We ‘spring forward’ with Zoe Hewett to start the season on the right foot with tips to declutter and refresh our home space
As the days grow longer and the warmth of spring breathes new life and a sense of optimism into the air, it's the perfect time to infuse our homes with a fresh perspective. It’s natural to feel the urge to renew with a deep Spring clean although it’s not just about clearing out the physical clutter that can weigh us down or removing any grime that might have accrued over the darker months. It's an opportunity to declutter the mind and rejuvenate our living spaces by making everything, including ourselves, feel fresher and lighter. OUT WITH THE OLD
Decluttering is not merely a physical act; it's a mindful process that can significantly impact mental well-being.
Removing any objects that don’t make us feel delighted also makes the cleaning process much easier.
The less there is to collect dust, touch, stow and move, the better. Clutter has been proven scientifically to raise cortisol levels in the home, particularly in women. Getting rid of anything superfluous is an excellent idea, not only to make cleaning quicker but as a step to promote greater wellbeing. It can be a time consuming activity anyway, but is certainly time well spent - consider it a health investment.
Essential oils possess powerful antibacterial, anti-fungal and
antiviral properties making them ideal for disinfecting surfaces and killing germs naturally, without harming your health along the way. Nothing says Spring like the whiff of zingy lemon, grapefruit or perhaps peppermint on the breeze as it courses through those flung-open windows.
Embracing the idea that a clutter-free environment fosters mental clarity, allows us to fully appreciate and enjoy our surroundings and, once spotless, affords greater styling opportunities too. There is definitely a difference between a surface with a display of treasured objects and just a pile of things, and there’s nothing like homeless items of clutter drifting into the scene to blur the line between the two.

YOUR COUNTRY PROPERTY
Grouping objects in to clusters of odd numbers makes a relaxed feeling display, whereas placing things in a symmetrical balances always reads as more formal. Varying the height of collected items like glassware or ceramics particularly when positioned in a row along a shelf, or arranged on a mantelpiece gives the eye an interesting undulating line to gaze upon. Another top styling trick is to place things on a tray, or on a low pile of coffee table style books, as if they were a tray or display plinth. This elevates the items placed on top and instantly makes it look like a considered choice rather than a random scattering of things found in the bottom of a pocket or the depths of a handbag.
INSPIRATION FROM THE ARTS
Mole from Wind In The Willows may have been briefly ashamed, when his friend Rat visited, about the cobwebs he returned home to after months away, but he knew the value of having a place for everything, and everything in its place. That’s all decluttering really boils down to. There’s no need to go absolutely minimalist and remove all signs of life. Maintaining that standard can become a joyless, burdensome undertaking destined to fail and cause dismay. Even Marie Kondo the Japanese decluttering queen has
“Spring was moving in the air above and in the earth below and around him”
Kenneth Grahame - The wind in the willows
eased up a little on the importance of tidying with the arrival of children and reality of parenting. Deciding what is staying and where it will be housed, whether it is ugly enough to go in a cupboard or beautiful enough to stay on view, is a deeply individual, personal matter - as is what constitutes ‘too much stuff’.
Another interior decorating task Mole was a proponent of in his underground den is putting the pictures up on the walls. It’s one of those jobs that so often gets left undone but is so worth the effort. Since it requires a good bit of organising and planning, it is the perfect task to do alongside cleaning and decluttering. Sorting through old photos, prints and paintings to adorn the walls is a fab way to bring a sense of new-ness to the home, and if there are pictures that have already been hung up for some time then it sometimes pays to shuffle them around to new places too, as after a while we can stop noticing them, and this keeps them on our radar.
Planning larger renovation projects is natural in the Spring too because of the anticipated improvement to the weather, but these smaller scale cosmetic changes can be just as powerful in bringing that freshness so many of us crave after the heaviness of the cold and dark.

COLOUR PALETTS
Moving interior colour palettes to light and brighter makes perfect sense and designers often take cues from nature when it comes to colour choices. The whites of snowdrops and pastel tones that evoke the essence of the lighter skies of Spring such as lilac, pinks and coral or even lavender-grey, may be better suited to larger areas like walls and ceilings. The vibrant yellow found in the centre of spring-flowering wood anemones might be more applicable

to smaller surface areas like bedlinen or cushions. It all depends on the appetite for bold colour! Generally, pastel tones are considered more comfortable for larger areas by most people and therefore more popular. They certainly create a serene and inviting atmosphere, perfect for capturing the light and airy feel of the season. Anyway, confining more intense, rich and zingy colours to smaller design features as little accents is reminiscent of how crocus,
daffodils, bluebells and pansies push through the soil to give a just bijou burst of bright colour, relative to the rest of the landscape.
A TOUCH OF GREEN
No spring home interior design is complete without the inclusion of greenery or flowers. Plants not only add a touch of
nature to decor schemes but also add mood-boosting chlorophyll, contribute to improved air quality and improving overall well-being. The uplifting scent of flowers can help with that too, but be mindful of crowding the window sills with plants though, as that way they can detract from the amount of natural light available to everyone else in the space.
Maximising natural light is the name of the game and the ideal is to allow it, along with fresh air, to permeate and flow as far into the darker corners as it can possibly reach. That might mean swapping the curtains out for drapes lighter in colour and lighter in weight, or simply installing tie-backs or hooks to keep them out of the way of the glazing.
For those that aren’t confidently green-fingered there’s always the option to bring in plants slightly more permanently through patterns on wallpaper, bedlinen or cushion fabrics instead. In this instance it doesn’t even matter whether the plants are non-native or invasive, and the lively pinks of Himalayan Balsam and the decorative structures of Japanese knotweed can delight the eyes without cause for concern. For lovers of the maximalist approach when it comes to botanical decorating look no further than biophilic designers House Of Hackney for springtime inspiration. Their vast collection of plant based patterns includes Galanthi, or snowdrop, fabric and wallpaper, and an immersive Hollyhock print in a Spring colour way full of exuberant pinks, oranges, purples, yellows and more. If a whole wall or indeed room of busy botanical wallpaper is too much of a commitment, then a lampshade, cushion or throw will still very much add a vernal feel.

Equine Spring Health
The evenings beginning to stretch out is a welcome sign for horse owners, beckoning that spring is on its way and we have made it through another long winter. For many, this marks a time where we start to increase activity with our horses and begin to plan for the summer months ahead. But what should be looking out for in Spring to help us navigate this season safely?
LAMINITIS PREVENTION
Laminitis, a painful and potentially debilitating condition affecting the hooves, often flares up during the spring months due to new, lush grass growth. We know that the majority of laminitic cases also have underlying systemic disease such as PPID (cushings disease) or equine metabolic syndrome (EMS). If your horse or pony has either of these conditions make sure to talk with your vet to ensure they are well managed ahead of introducing them to the new grass.
All horses should be gradually introduced to pasture, but extra care should be
given to “high risk” horses and ponies – those who have had laminitis before, are overweight, or have PPID or EMS. Consider strip grazing, track systems or even grazing muzzles to avoid over consumption.
Checking your horse’s feet daily is a good habit to get into. Make sure they are walking comfortably and monitor for heat in the hooves or the presence of digital pulses. If you notice anything unusual or different it can be a sign to call your vet. If you are unsure of how to feel for these, ask your vet – they will be happy to show you.
SWEET ITCH
With regards to flies causing annoyance, perhaps the most irritating of them all is the midge (Cullicoide). These tiny flies swarm and bite horses, particularly in the mane, tail and belly region. Have you ever wondered why some horses seem more bothered than others to these biting midges? That is because some horses develop a hypersensitivity to the saliva of midges and develop an allergic reaction, commonly known as “sweet itch”. Affected horses will intensely rub the affected areas on solid structures such as fencing.
74 | SPRING 2024 Your Horse & Country Magazine VETS ADVICE COUNTRYANDSTABLE.CO.UK FLY RUGS
Sweet itch can range in severity - some horses suffer broken hair or patchy hair loss, whereas others continue to itch until the skin is broken and raw, leaving oozing lesions.
Most active at dawn and dusk, midges favour wet, marshy areas. If possible, horses should be stabled when midges are most active. As midges are poor fliers, using a fan outside the stable helps prevent them from entering. A well-fitting fly rug is also essential for horses who suffer from sweet itch. There are some medications which have ranging success at combatting sweet itch, speak to your vet to find out more.
HOOF CARE
Regular hoof care is vital for maintaining soundness and preventing hoof-related issues such as thrush and abscesses. It is not uncommon for some horses to have their shoes removed over winter or for farrier visits to be further spaced out. As workload increases as we head into spring, make sure your horse or pony is back on a schedule of routine farrier visits
to trim hooves and address any potential imbalances or abnormalities. Keep hooves clean and well-maintained, and consider applying hoof moisturizers or sealants to prevent excessive drying or cracking.
NUTRITION
Your horse’s nutritional demands will change as their workload changes and as they transition their roughage intake from hay to grass. Talk to your vet or feed

scoring system to evaluate body fat distribution and muscle tone. Aim for a moderate body condition score of 5 to 6 on a scale of 1 to 9, adjusting feed and exercise accordingly to achieve and maintain the ideal body condition.
TRAINING AND EVENT PLANNING
Spring is an excellent time to gradually increase exercise levels for horses after the winter months of reduced activity and prepare for upcoming events, such as competitions or camps. Take your time to increase exercise intensity and duration to build strength and endurance for your desired goal. When increasing workload remember to only ever increase speed, distance and intensity individually. Increasing too much too soon can increase risk of injury.
It often helps to work back from your goal to work out a personalised training program to reach your target. Remember that variety is the spice of life and keep your sessions interested and varied so your horse doesn’t become bored. Bear in mind that exercise should be promoting musculoskeletal health, cardiovascular
fitness, and mental well-being for your horses and ponies.
HEALTH CHECKS
Spring is an ideal time to perform a health “MOT” for your horse or pony, ahead of the upcoming year. Make sure your horse’s vaccinations are up to date, their teeth have been checked and appropriately rasped and your parasite control strategy is still working. Talking through your horse’s health with your vet is a great way to identify any early issues and to get great tips for how best to manage your steed.
Spring equine care requires vigilance and proactive management to ensure the health and happiness of our equine companions. By proactively addressing key areas such as laminitis management, fly control, hoof care, body condition scoring, training, and event planning, you can
set your equine partner up for success in the months ahead. With proper care and attention, you can enjoy a season filled with memorable rides, adventures, and achievements with your horse.
FLY CONTROL
With warmer temperatures come pesky insects, including flies, mosquitoes, and ticks. Implementing an effective fly control strategy is essential for maintaining horse comfort and preventing conditions such as sweet itch. There are several different options available for fly control such as mask, rugs which create a good physical barrier between your horse and the flies. Chemical deterrents in the form of fly sprays and creams can also be very effective but must be applied regularly. As well as thinking about what you can put onto your horse and pony, it is vital to think about their environment too:
• Keep a clean environment - Flies are attracted to urine and faeces, and many flies use manure as a breeding site. Regularly remove soiled bedding to reduce the fly burden in your yard, and if possible, keep the manure pile some distance from the stable to reduce contact between flies and horses. Regular poo picking of paddocks is also important and helps to minimise the number of flies your horse or pony comes into contact with.
• Ensure good air flow through stablesGenerally, flies prefer still air, so ensuring good airflow through your stables can reduce the number of unwanted flying visitors that enter. If your horse or pony will tolerate it, consider using a fan outside of the stable to act as a further deterrent.
• Use stabling to your advantage - Many flies, including midges, are most active at dawn and dusk. To avoid contact, opt to stable horses at these times. If your horse or pony suffers with sweet itch, it is important to keep their fly rugs on when stabled.
• Choose your grazing wisely - Flies tend to like congregating over water, be that damp woodlands, water troughs, or streams. If possible, try to keep your horse’s grazing away from such areas (but do ensure there is access to clean, fresh drinking water). High ground is also advantageous when avoiding flies, as it is more exposed with better air flow.
• Clean your horse regularly - Sweat, urine and faeces – flies can’t help but be attracted to these aromas. Regular washing of your horse and pony to remove such attractants can help remove your horse from being a prime target for flies.

Why are muscles important?
Muscles make up approximately 50% of each horse’s total bodyweight and are required to support the skeleton and protect joints and soft tissues, as well as to enable horses to carry the weight of a rider. Without good muscle development, horses will be weak and unbalanced, making them more prone to injury and unable to perform to their maximum potential.
What is topline?
The term ‘topline’ is often used to describe the muscles that cover a horse’s spine, along the neck, back, loin and croup. To support these topline muscles, well developed core muscles in the abdomen are also needed, so building a strong, athletic horse is just as much about the muscles that cannot be seen as it is the ones that can.
Why feed Muscle & Focus?
The major component of muscle is protein which is made up of ‘building blocks’ called amino acids. Horses require a specific balance of essential amino acids, particularly lysine, threonine and methionine, which must be provided in horses’ diets to allow them to develop and maintain strong, healthy muscle
tissue. But healthy muscle development isn’t just about feeding protein; a balanced diet that supplies all the essential nutrients is vital. Developing and maintaining muscle is particularly energy costly, and if a horse’s diet does not provide enough energy or a balance of vitamins and minerals, it will not be able to fuel muscle growth even if there is plenty of protein available to use.
Muscle & Focus is a careful formulated, balanced feed that is ideal for horses and ponies requiring stamina, focus and support for healthy muscle development and recovery. The energy (10.5MJ/kg DM) that Muscle & Focus supplies is from fibre and oil ingredients, which provide an excellent source of slow release, stamina-giving energy. Being whole cereal grain free and molasses free it is low in starch and low sugar, ideal for those that react negatively to high starch diets. Containing ingredients specifically chosen for their quality protein content, Muscle & Focus will aid in muscle development alongside an appropriate exercise regime. To support good gut health magnesium carbonate, calcium carbonate, apple pectin, a probiotic and a blend of prebiotics are included. Muscle & Focus is fully balanced with vitamins and minerals to support the function of all body
systems and develop strong, healthy muscles. For instance, magnesium is essential for muscle and nerve function; B vitamins are required for muscle growth and antioxidants such as vitamin E and selenium are vital for preventing muscle damage and supporting recovery. A blend of tasty herbs make Muscle & Focus highly palatable, even to the fussiest of feeders. As a soaked feed it also provides extra hydration that is particularly useful for competition horses who can be reluctant to drink enough when away competing.
Why is exercise important?
Although a balanced diet and quality protein are essential for muscle development, just like humans, horses need to exercise properly, consistently and in increasing intensity to use the nutrients that have been supplied in their diet to build healthy muscle tissue. As well as a steady increase in intensity of exercise, incorporating rest and lighter training days into a horse’s workload will allow for repair and strengthening of the muscles. Using a variety of exercises will help to develop each different muscle group as well as keeping the horse mentally stimulated and happy and focused in his work, so that he can perform at his best.

REHOME THE RIGHT WAY
Rehoming, retraining, and reviving a horse’s career is a complex and rewarding process that requires dedication and expertise. For those involved in the horse industry, finding new homes and purposes for retired or underutilised horses is not only a practical necessity but also a deeply ethical responsibility. We explore the various aspects of rehoming and retraining horses, including the challenges, successes, and best practices.
Assessing the need for rehoming and retraining a horse is the crucial first step in the process of reviving a horse’s career. It requires a careful evaluation of the horse’s current situation and future potential. Factors to consider include the horse’s age, health, temperament, past training, and overall suitability for its previous or potential new career. One must also take into account the reasons for rehoming or retiring the horse. Is it due to injury, lack of performance, or a change in the owner’s circumstances? Understanding the underlying cause will help determine the appropriate course of action. Additionally, involving a veterinarian, trainer, or other equine professionals can provide valuable expertise and guidance during the assessment process. It is important to approach this evaluation with objectivity and a commitment to the horse’s wellbeing.
Rehoming and retraining a horse can have numerous benefits for both the horse and its new owner. Firstly, it offers the horse a fresh start and the opportunity for a fulfilling career. By evaluating the horse’s current abilities and potential, one can match it with a new career path that suits its temperament, strengths, and limitations. This can result in a happier and more successful horse. Moreover, rehoming and retraining a horse can also benefit its original owner. It allows them to find a more suitable horse for their needs, whether it be a different discipline
or a horse that is better suited to their skill level. This can lead to a more satisfying and rewarding partnership between horse and rider. From an industry standpoint, rehoming and retraining horses can help reduce the number of horses in need of rescue or retirement facilities, relieving some of the burden placed on these organisations.
Finding the right home for your horse is crucial in ensuring its continued success and well-being. When rehoming a horse, it is important to thoroughly vet potential new owners to ensure they have the experience, resources, and commitment necessary to care for and train the horse properly. Start by creating a detailed advertisement or listing that accurately describes your horse’s temperament, abilities, and any specific requirements it may have. This will help attract suitable candidates and weed out those who may not be a good fit. When potential homes are identified, it is essential to
conduct thorough interviews and visits to assess their facilities, knowledge, and overall suitability. Don’t hesitate to ask for references and contact previous owners or trainers to gather additional information about the potential new home. Finally, consider drawing up a contract that clearly specifies the responsibilities and expectations of both parties. This will ensure that your horse is placed in a safe and caring environment where its career can thrive.
In the world of equestrian sports, proper training and rehabilitation are essential for horses that have been rehomed. Whether your horse is transitioning from racing to show jumping or from a neglectful situation to a loving home, investing time and effort into its training and rehabilitation is crucial for its success in its new career.
Rehabilitation may involve addressing physical issues, such as injuries or muscle imbalances, through veterinary care, physical therapy, and a carefully designed
92 | SPRING 2024 Your Horse & Country Magazine WELFARE AND REHOMING
exercise program. It is important to work closely with professionals who specialise in equine rehabilitation to ensure your horse receives the proper care it needs. When it comes to training, starting from the basics is often the best approach. Assess your horse’s current skills and build upon them gradually, using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage desired behaviours. Consistency, patience, and clear communication are key to building a strong foundation. Working with an experienced trainer can also greatly benefit your horse’s progress. They can identify any behavioural issues or gaps in training that need to be addressed and guide you in developing a training plan tailored to your horse’s abilities and goals. Remember, training and rehabilitation is not a quick fix process. It requires time, dedication, and commitment. By investing in your horse’s training and rehabilitation, you are setting them up for a successful and fulfilling new career.
Once your rehomed horse has completed
its rehabilitation and gained a solid foundation in its training, the next step is to revive its career by focusing on its specific discipline. This phase requires careful consideration and planning to ensure that your horse is set up for success. First and foremost, it is crucial to identify the discipline that best suits your horse’s abilities and temperament. Some horses may excel in show jumping, while others may thrive in dressage or eventing. By understanding your horse’s strengths and weaknesses, you can choose a discipline that aligns with its natural talents. Finding the right trainer or coach is essential in the revival stage. Look for someone with experience and success in your chosen discipline. Their expertise will help guide you and your horse in refining specific skills and techniques necessary for competition.
As you begin retraining your horse for its chosen discipline, remember to be patient and take things one step at a time. Set achievable goals and celebrate small successes along the way. This approach will help build confidence in both you and your horse, ultimately leading to a successful career revival.
Rehoming and retraining a horse can be a truly rewarding experience for both the horse and its new owners. By providing a second chance, we not only give these magnificent animals a new lease on life but also offer them the opportunity to excel in their careers. Supporting the horse’s new owners is vital in ensuring the continued success and wellbeing of the horse. By maintaining open lines of communication, offering guidance and resources, and organising educational opportunities, we can ensure that the horse’s new home is a place where they can thrive. Remember, rehoming and retraining a horse is a journey that requires patience, dedication, and a genuine love for these incredible creatures. By working together as a community, we can make a significant impact in the lives of these horses and demonstrate the power of second chances.

BEYOND THE FINISHING LINE
Retraining of Racehorses is transforming lives after the racetrack
What happens to racehorses once their racing careers end has become a widely asked question. While many prosperous racehorses retire to stud, the destiny of those who do not achieve the same success on the track can raise concern.
Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is the official charity devoted to ensuring the welfare of racehorses when their racing careers come to an end. The charity’s mission is to safeguard the wellbeing of every former racehorse, and it does this not only through its welfare work but also preventative measures such as setting retraining standards, education of leisure owners and promoting the versatility of
racehorses in second careers.
Securing a new home for a former racehorse, or finding one, is made possible through a variety of avenues including directly from racehorse trainers, retrainers, charitable organisations, or the RoR Source a Horse platform, www. sourceahorse.ror.org.uk. Retraining these horses is a crucial phase, and although the majority of former racehorses are well-suited for a second career, whether in various equestrian disciplines or as ‘happy hackers’ a successful transition depends on their physical wellbeing and a temperament suitable for retraining. After completing their training, most racehorses settle into a more tranquil demeanour,
showcasing a calmer disposition compared to their active racing days.
Central to RoR’s work are welfare initiatives including its Vulnerable Horse Scheme (VHS), a safety net extending charitable support to any retired racehorse in need. Collaborating with charitable partners and private operators, VHS ensures horses requiring assistance are placed under the care of experts, providing tailored support. Complementing this scheme is the Retraining Assessment Programme (RAP), launched in 2022 in collaboration with retaining charity HEROS. The RAP ensures collaboration between racehorse trainers, owners, and retraining centres to assess and support horses facing potentially
94 | SPRING 2024 Your Horse & Country Magazine WELFARE AND REHOMING
challenging transitions from racing to retirement.
What distinguishes RoR is its commitment to building a vibrant community focused on the wellbeing of former racehorses. By showcasing their versatility across a spectrum of equestrian activities, RoR not only broadens the demand for these horses but also provides ample opportunities for participation in competitions. The charity’s dedication to diverse activities, from dressage to polo, showing to endurance, ensures engagement and fulfilment for former racehorses. With over 12,000 former racehorses registered with RoR, a plethora of opportunities awaits them.
But second careers for former racehorses can come in many guises: two former racehorses whose retirement journey has taken an unexpected turn are King Erik (Erik) and Abel Tasman (Abel), both aged nine. Nestled near Durham, their hooves now trace a different path, leading them to the heart of Elemore Country Park near Sunderland.
Every fortnight, Erik and Abel embark on random patrols, covering the expanse with an efficiency unmatched by foot. Their towering statures, Erik at 17’2hh and Abel at 16’2hh, coupled with their serene temperaments, make them an imposing yet beloved presence. Their mission is twofold: deter anti-social behaviour and
create a safer, more inviting environment. The result has been a near-zero incidence of off-road bikes, a testament to the impact of their equine vigilance.
Elemore Country Park’s transformation, guided by these retired racehorses, showcases the untapped potential in the second act of these majestic creatures’ lives, proving that even after the race is over, there are still many trails to blaze.

The approach is calm, respectful, systematic and with the welfare and the soundness of the horse at the forefront at all times. No rushed jobs or forced systems used here. The horse must be given the time to understand and to develop the muscle and strength to carry the rider with ease and confidence and in a good non damaging posture, so that he or she has a future. Long-reining, see on left, is very important at this stage. So much can be achieved on straight lines with no damage to weak young joints. Finding a Family
Rehomed ponies from Redwings Horse Sanctuary hope to find a family that will love and cherish them, and that is exactly what happened for Redwings Budgie in 2023.
He joined the charity at the Royal Norfolk Show, representing Redwings in the Rescue Village and the showing class for rescued ponies – coming away 5th place with his handler Dean. Whilst Budgie was there, he caught the eye of the O’Grady family, who visited him throughout their day at the Show and were delighted to offer him a home.
The handsome four-year-old black cob originally arrived at Redwings in 2021, after suffering complications from having been infected with strangles as a foal, before his rescue. Using specialist equipment (albeit designed for dogs, as Budgie’s head was so small!) the Redwings vets were able to take the sample needed to diagnose strep zoo – a bacteria that is a close cousin of strangles - and coordinate his treatment.
Happily, he made a full recovery and was cleared as being a possible
carrier and was able to look for a home as an unbacked project.
Unbacked projects are trained by Redwings to the point where they can be happily caught, lead, groomed and are comfortable with the vet and farrier. Their new families then take over ‘the reins’ to continue their training to be ridden, so the charity looks for experienced and kind Guardians with the knowledge to take on the journey of training an inexperienced horse.
After waiting patiently to apply for Budgie online, the O’Grady family welcomed Budgie home in August 2023. Young Guardians Isabelle and James could not have been more excited to welcome him and introduce
him to the family’s existing Shetland pony herd, and fellow cob youngster Mickey –Budgie’s new best friend!
Towards the end of the year Budgie took his first steps as a ridden pony, and the future is bright for this beautiful boy.

Mans Best Friend VULNERABLE NATIVE BREEDS
Dogs come in all shapes and sizes and there are over 200 different and diverse dog breeds recognised by The Kennel Club in the UK today. The most popular breeds are well-known and frequently seen out and about, like Golden Retrievers, Labradors, Staffordshire Bull Terriers or Chihuahuas, however, there are some much rarer breeds many may never have seen or even heard of.
The Kennel Club has a list of Vulnerable Native Breeds, which consists of some of the country’s most historic dog breeds but which now number less than 300 annual puppy births, and aims to increase of awareness of these dogs, and their varying characteristics, to prevent them from disappearing. The Kennel Club wants to remind any prospective dog owners of
the vast range of breeds and to encourage people to ensure that they research and select the right one for them for a long and loyal companionship.
The Kennel Club has highlighted some of the Vulnerable Native Breeds that are best suited to a life in the country with active owners that love the outdoors:
IDEAL COUNTRY COMPANIONS
If you’ve considered all of the elements of dog ownership and think you’re ready for a canine companion, it's really important to do your research to find the best match for you, your family and your lifestyle. There are well over 200 breeds of dogs in the UK, and plenty more crossbreeds and rescue dogs of all shapes and sizes,

and each one is going to be different. Be very honest with yourself when it comes to considering what you can give a dog in terms of time, exercise, training, and grooming. Also think about how much noise you are prepared to put up with, how much shedding, how affectionate you want a dog to be, and whether the breed is child and pet-friendly. Some dogs are very high maintenance indeed and will need a good two to three hours a day – every single day – of exercise plus training, to keep them healthy and happy. Others will be fine with just a couple of short walks a day, although they will still need the same amount of your company. The secret to finding the right dog for you is to match what you can give to what each breed needs.
HERE ARE SOME VULNERABLE NATIVE BREEDS COUNTRYSIDE DWELLERS MAY WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT:
BEARDED COLLIE
Traditionally used for herding cattle and sheep in the Borders and Highlands of Scotland, the Bearded Collie is a responsive, intelligent and hard-working breed. They have a long shaggy coat that coat requires daily maintenance and their active nature means they need a large house with access to sizeable garden.
RETRIEVER (CURLY COATED)
Both the oldest and tallest of the Retriever breeds, this dog has a very distinctive coat of small, tight curls. An intelligent and friendly breed, their coat does mean they require regular grooming, as well as needing two hours of exercise a day so would need an owner that can dedicate the time to their needs. Much like their Retriever relatives, they are a large and active breed that requires more than two hours of exercise a day.
DEERHOUND
One of the tallest breeds, the Deerhound is a calm and friendly companion originating from Scotland. Known for being obedient and easy to train, they are also very eager to please their owners. They are both elegant and athletic and because of their size, they need owners that can provide them with more than two hours exercise a day and access to a large garden to keep them mentally and physically stimulated.
GORDON SETTER
Gordon Setters take their name from the Duke of Gordon, who introduced the breed in the early 19th century in Scotland. They are recognisable by their black and tan shiny coat which requires regular grooming and enjoy long and active exercise for more than two hours a day.
IRISH RED & WHITE SETTER
You may be familiar with the Irish Setter, but this breed were the “original” Irish Setter! Unlike their close relatives, they have a red and white coat, as their name suggests. They are a larger breed so require more than two hours of exercise a day as well as access to a large garden and regular grooming, but for the right owners they are a highly intelligent, happy and affectionate breed.

IRISH WATER SPANIEL
Although called a Spaniel, this curly-coated breed was bred to work as a ‘retriever’, particularly retrieving from the water and is an affectionate and inquisitive breed who feels very at home playing in the water. They are highly intelligent, strong and athletic – enjoying over two hours of exercise a day.

They are highly intelligent, strong and athletic – enjoying over two hours of exercise a day.
IRISH WOLFHOUND
Irish Wolfhounds are known for being exceptionally calm and friendly. They are the tallest of all the breeds and combined with their kind temperament, are often nicknamed the “gentle giant”. Due to theirW size and courage they seek adventure and plenty of exercise everyday.
SMOOTH COLLIE
Living somewhat in the shadows of its better known cousin, the Rough Collie, the Smooth Collie is a strong and intelligent dog, originally bred to manage sheep. They are friendly and energetic, and appreciate spending time outside, so need active, outdoorsy owners. It is understood one of Queen Victoria’s favourite dogs was a Smooth Collie named Sharp.
LANCASHIRE HEELER
Lancashire Heelers are small dogs in size but not in personality! They are lively and loyal dogs who make great family companions due to their happy and affectionate temperament. As their name suggests, they originate from the Ormskirk area of Lancashire, where they were originally bred as cattle herders.
NORWICH TERRIER
The smallest of the terrier breeds, Norwich Terriers make up for their size with a loveable personality and big energy. Though small, they are a sturdy and hardy dog and can be very active.
OTTERHOUND
One of the most rare and vulnerable UK breeds, the Otterhound is an easy-going and good-natured breed. Otterhounds and strong known to gallop on land and enjoy more than two hours of exercise a day. Their rough weather resistant coat and webbed feet means they are just as comfortable in water as they are on land!
It is important that you learn as much as you can about breeds you’re interested in – both their good traits and possible downsides.

Any dogs can learn new tricks...
While many of those lucky enough to live in the country will be surrounded by an abundance of dog-friendly nature trails and woodland to explore on long dog walks, dog owners should not considere walking their only option when it comes to ensuring they meet their dogs daily exercise requirements.
There are a variety of canine activities anyone can try which can have additional benefits such as improving training and behaviour, providing more mental stimulation and creating a closer bond between human and their canine companion. Research has also shown that learning a new skill encourages the release of dopamine in the brain, a feel-good chemical that helps increase energy levels and equips us to deal with stresses of everyday life.
The Kennel Club, have highlighted some canine activities you might want to give a go…
AGILITY
If you are looking for an energetic mix of everything, agility involves guiding your dog through a range of obstacles with the aim to complete the course in the fastest time! Agility was introduced by The Kennel Club at the world’s greatest celebration of dogs, Crufts, in 1978. Agility quickly became a firm favorite, designed to put a dog’s fitness and handler’s ability to train to the test.
Agility is fast-paced and action packed, but the first steps start by ensuring your dog has basic training and is well socialised. There is a whole variety of obstacles to master, like hurdles, weaving poles, tunnels, see-saws, jumps and more!
You can even progress to taking part in competitions all across the UK, and internationally, to collect points for qualifications, but whether you take part competitively or just for fun, it’s a great opportunity to become part of a welcoming and friendly community.
For owners interested in getting started in agility with
their dog, The Kennel Club has created a step-bystep video guide which can be found online at thekennelclub.org.uk/ newtoagility
FIELD TRIALS
An ideal countryside pursuit for anyone to enjoy with their canine companion, field trials are competitive events that mimic and showcase the traditional working abilities of dogs. The dogs are tested on their finding ability, speed and directness of retrieving. Gundog breeds that were originally used for various roles in shooting and hunting are the most popular for competing in this country sport and there are four groups of Field Trials to partake in:
• Retrievers
• Spaniels
• Pointers and Setters
freestyle. Heelwork to music originated from obedience and key elements of routines include walking and trotting to heel.
The freestyle category competitions are a series of moves which can be a unique way for you and your dog to unleash your creativity together to tell a story or theme reflecting the rhythm and lyrics of the music.
Training starts with teaching your dog different moves and poses. Creating a strong bond with your dog will help build your confidence to then develop the moves into a sequence.

THE KENNEL CLUB’S KEY QUESTIONS PROSPECTIVE OWNERS SHOULD ASK THEMSELVES:
• Can you give a dog all the care and attention they need? Think about both the short and the long term responsibilities, considering your work and life commitments, and how these might change over time.
• Are you active and mobile to provide enough exercise and mental stimulation every day, all year round, for your dog’s life? Dogs need to be walked and interacted with every day, come rain or shine.
• Will you have the time to fulfil all their needs, such as: exercise, training, bathing, grooming, vet trips and feeding?
• Have you considered all costs of having a dog, across its whole life, covering any eventualities? Such as insurance, veterinary fees, doggy day care, food and more.
TOP TIP -
Health is of paramount importance, so before taking part in any canine activity, make sure your dog is fit and healthy –from nose to tail. Consult with your vet if you have any concerns.

Hacking your way to happiness
The British Horse Society give their advice on how to protect your local off-road routes so together, we can Keep Britain Riding
Spring has sprung and many of us will be taking advantage of the warmer weather and lighter days by going on a leisurely hack with our horses.
Across the UK, we’re fortunate enough to experience idyllic countryside views, hidden gems and golden coastal beaches; all perfect places to enjoy with our horses. But did you know that in England and Wales, many scenic off-road routes are currently under threat and could face being lost forever?
As part of The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000, historic rights of way used by horse riders, cyclists and walkers will be extinguished from the definitive map if they are not formally recorded (or registered as an application to be recorded) as a footpath or bridleway by 1 January 2031.
In England, public rights of way amount to over 188,000km and horse riders currently only have access to 22% of this network. Carriage drivers can enjoy only 5%. Losing access to historic routes that could link
up or extend our fragmented rights of way structure would be devastating and stop not only equestrians, but cyclists and walkers from being able to explore our stunning British countryside.
Not to mention, that it would affect the safety of all countryside-lovers by limiting access to safe off-road routes. For equestrians in particular, this could be extremely impactful. You only have to look at the figures The British Horse Society (BHS) collated last year, which reveal that 66 horses and three equestrians were killed on our roads, to know that safe offroad access is incredibly important.

NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT
Despite the BHS reaching a landmark 3,000 applications across England and Wales to save bridleways and byways, which couldn’t have been achieved without the hard work of our volunteers and supporters, there is still much more work to be done in order to Keep Britain Riding.
future of our rights of way network and save our local off-road routes.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?
Check your favourite route: you can check the status of all the access routes in your local area on your Local Authority’s definitive rights of way map, or an OS Explorer Map. Hard copies of OS maps can be bought from many websites, bookshops or outdoor activity centres. Or they can be viewed for free at most local libraries. To view the most recent OS mapping online, head to www.streetmap. co.uk.
Attend a training day: learn how to identify historical routes and the key resources used to study them, from experts in the field. It’s valuable to find out what your evidence can unlock and how to create a systematic research method to investigate your routes.
Submit an application: the BHS has created a 2031 toolkit detailing how you can ensure your routes are recorded and protected. Using the toolkit, you can check that the routes that you currently enjoy riding are safe from closure, and you may even be able to save a route that you can’t currently ride but would love to ride in the future.
has officers based across the UK who specialise in all manners of access issues. They can support and guide you on any concerns you may have about an off-road route in your area.
Become a BHS volunteer: if you want to make a lasting difference in your area, then a volunteer role could be for you. You’ll have the opportunity to provide localised advice, support and assistance, launch new public bridleways and fundraise to defend endangered rights of way for riders and carriage drivers.
Donate today: the BHS relies on donations and your fundraising efforts to restore off-road routes for equestrians and other road users across the UK. The more the equine charity raises, the more projects they can assist with funding and critically, the more routes they can stop from being lost forever.
MAINTAINING YOUR RIGHTS OF WAY
While it is essential that we continue to save those routes that aren’t formally recorded on the Definitive Map, it’s also important that we don’t forget about the maintenance of the rest of our rights of way network.
It’s not uncommon for routes to be blocked by debris and fallen trees and reporting these obstructions or issues will help to protect and improve access for all off-road users.
So, what counts as an obstruction? Access issues aren’t just limited to fallen trees. Broken gates, defects in surfaces, fly tipping or anything else that makes the route difficult or dangerous to use should be reported to the landowner or your local Highway Authority.
Only by uniting and working closely together can we continue to secure the

HOW TO REPORT A PROBLEM
1
IDENTIFY THE LOCATION: it’s important to be as specific as possible about where the issue is, particularly for off-road routes.
• Check out What3Words.com or download the app – What3Words has given every 3m square in the world a unique 3-word address. It’s the easiest way to find and share a location, with just three words.
• Find the grid reference – this can be done through an Ordnance Survey map.
• Use Google Maps or Bing Maps to find the postcode and provide directions to the site of the problem.
• Check the off-road route you ride is recorded as a Public Bridleway, a Restricted Byway or a Byway Open to All Traffic (BOAT) on the definitive map. You can find the route on the Definitive Map by searching for your Highway Authority name and Definitive Map (e.g. Hampshire County Council Definitive Map). Each right of way will have a reference number – this allows the Rights of Way Team at the council to identify the correct route.
2TAKE A PHOTO: where possible and safe to do so, take a photo of the problem. A photo can provide a more accurate representation of the issue at hand and can be used to help identify the cause of the problem more quickly and accurately. It’s a good idea to use an everyday item to give the issue a visual scale.
3REPORT THE ISSUE:
your local authority should have an online portal for reporting problems.
When submitting the report, provide as much detail as possible, including any photos taken, the route reference number and location details. If your issue has already been reported, make sure to report the issue again. This shows the authority that there is demand for the route being used and helps them to prioritise their resources.
4
AWAIT A RESPONSE:
you should allow a reasonable time period to receive an update on your report. Four weeks is the average wait time. However, if you believe there is an immediate risk of injury, or an injury has occurred as a result of the problem, telephone the authority to raise the priority. Some issues will have higher priority if there are safety implications or it’s on a busy route.
KEEP BRITAIN RIDING
With your support, the equine charity has been able to stop thousands of routes from being lost forever. They’ve also been able to build, repair and restore local riding and carriage driving rights of way across the UK.
If you want to be part of the BHS’s fundraising efforts and contribute towards providing safer access for all off-road users, there are many ways in which you can get involved. The more that is raised, the more projects the charity can assist with funding.
You can join one of their organised rides, or head over to bhs.org.uk/rideathon to sign up to the BHS fundraising Rideathon challenge and raise while you ride.
Running throughout July 2024, this challenge is focused on quality time spent with your horse. Take part in the challenge individually, or team up with friends, and ride as many possible miles as you can. The money you raise will help the BHS to protect and restore even more bridleways or byways across the UK.
Whether you’re leading, riding, carriage driving, or supporting those that do, we can work together to Keep Britian Riding for future generations to come.

Equestrian Dream REALISING YOUR
As an equestrian, there are certain purchases that are essential to maintain our sport and our horses, then there are some that we can work towards and then there are those that we can but dream of, from top-quality saddles to the latest highperformance riding boots as worn by our sporting idols, but as an equestrian it doesn’t stop there, our dreams much like the cross country fences at the Badminton horse trials are often big and bold! From luxury stables, spacious all weather riding arenas to horseboxes that really do bring out our inner child excitement!
Managing our dreams to a reality can take some doing, but hard work, determination and the dare to dream itself will enable your equestrian dream to become a reality. There are certainly a host of businesses and suppliers to support your dream and take you by the hand as you find your way to equestrian perfection.
If new stables, a pristine and functioning equestrian yard or facility is your thing, then planning will be key, from the groundworks to the right machinery these often big and daunting feats can fail if not carried out without precision planning. Many aspiring equestrians will have considered a DIY riding arena or the prospect of knocking up a few new stables and fencing, fact is - that it really isn’t that simple, and a DIY dream will often cost you more, with spiralling costs and unplanned changes stretching your budget.
It is highly recommendable to find an experienced and trusted manufacturer who will talk through your bespoke needs and requirements, not just for you, but perhaps a quirky horse that you may be trying to accommodate for as well, they will bring with them a network of experienced minds who can ensure you have the correct planning permission, foundation requirements, they will give sound advice on the best
building materials, drainage needs and structural support for your horse from both stable floorings to arena surfaces. It’s important when considering large expenditure that the material’s you use are long lasting, robust and weatherproof capable for with standing our harsh and changing seasons, from extreme wet and cold, to long dry and often hot periods, many woods will swell, expand, shrink and split in these conditions, so choosing the right material is key for ensuring longevity, and for maintaining that design and look that you dream of achieving!
If you don’t dream of stables, arenas or picturesque paddocks perhaps it’s a horse box that you so desire, from 3.5 to 26 tonne, finding the right horse box can be a mind field, with so many

It’s important to calculate your weight allowances before choosing you’re the right horsebox for you, whilst a vehicle partitioned for two horses may

be enough space to carry your pride and joy, but will their weight coupled up with the weight of your luxury fixtures and fittings, tack and accessories tip you over the legal limit? Have you considered your travel destinations, if competing on the continent then your horsebox may require certain additional options like lighting, equine air circulation systems and specialist continental insurance or break down cover for both horse and vehicle, before you jump in to the wrong box for you, it is definitely worth exploring the market of manufactures and coachbuilders,
talking to them will ensure you and your horse are in safe hands prior to parting with any money.
When it comes to achieving dreams, one thing you can be certain of is that you will likely be spending large amounts of money, and in a world of opportunists, online scams and illegitimate business and fraudsters trying to con the money from your hand it is important to do your research. Do you know your payload before you drive to an event?
It is very easy to overload a 3500kg horsebox, and even a 7500kg one, as most people don’t take into account passengers, tack, water, hay, and these add to the payload considerably.
For example, an empty 3500kg horsebox normally weighs about 2500kg, leaving 1000kg for the driver and passenger, horse, tack, etc. Many of these horseboxes are stalled for two horses, and that can be a big problem. If you are overloaded and have an accident, your insurance will be invalidated and you could be facing a number of offences, both overloading and licence ones. In recent years, the DVSA has found that more than 80% of LCV’s stopped on the roadside on suspicion of overloading, are in fact overweight.
Why Uprating
You have a limited payload capacity and wish to carry an extra horse or equipment. You don’t want to buy a newer, bigger horsebox so you can save money by converting your current vehicle. You want to avoid a large fine by DVSA.
What to do if you are overloaded.
The first thing is to weigh your horsebox FULLY LOADED with your horse(s), tack, water, food, and passengers so that you know where you stand. Remember to weigh each axle individually as you may find that whilst you may be under the Gross Vehicle Weight, you have actually overloaded the rear axle. This is very common in lightweight horseboxes. Fortunately SvTech can help, and is keen to promote its uprating service for lightweight horseboxes (3500kg), whereby the horsebox can gain an extra 200-300kg in payload. This provides vital payload capability when carrying an extra horse and/ or tack and offers peace of mind for the owner.
We can start the ball rolling by asking customers to fill in an enquiry form and send it back with photos of the Horsebox plate, the weight ticket and Registration Document.
SvTech has carried out extensive work and testing on lightweight models and has covered uprates for most lightweight vehicles. It is worth noting that some uprates require modifications or changes to the vehicle’s braking, tyres and/or suspension, for which SvTech provides a simple purpose-built suspension assister kit. This will take between 1-2 hours for you to fit. Your horsebox will then go for a formal inspection to bring it into the ‘Goods’ category, and, depending on the vehicle’s age, may also require fitment of a speed limiter, for which there are one or two options.
Most importantly, vehicles registered after May 2002 must be fitted with manufacturer’s ABS, if going above 3500kg.
