The Shore & Beyond BOATING BLISS IN WEYMOUTH

When you think of Weymouth, you might instantly think of golden sands, fishing boats bobbing in the bay and walks along a bustling promenade…. and you’d be absolutely right! This popular and traditional Dorset seaside town is packed with boating and shoreside activities to suit every family member.

Nestled within 80 expansive miles of Dorset coastline, Weymouth’s allure is best understood through the firsthand experiences of its visitors. Once you’ve set foot on its welcoming shores, the desire to return becomes pretty much irresistible. There’s a distinct charm to this seaside town and its historic harbour; a magnetic pull that sparks a sense of adventure.

Surrounded by the Jurassic Coast’s stunning scenery, immersed in history and a wealth of activities, it is no wonder that Weymouth is a prominent hotspot for boaters, visitors and tourists alike.

Boasting a wide selection of amenities to cater to visitors, Weymouth town centre buzzes with hotels, restaurants and cafes, while leisure activities abound, from boating excursions to weekly markets. Weymouth’s harbour, with its ferry connections to the Channel Islands and France, serves as a lively focus of maritime activity. Divided by the river estuary, Custom House Quay and the Old Harbour stand as a nod to the town’s maritime heritage, united by a Royal charter that dates back to 1252.

This vibrant atmosphere is punctuated by a calendar of events that cater to all interests. From the International Beach Kite Festival and Weymouth Regatta to vintage vehicle rallies and the exhilarating Ironman triathlon, there’s always something happening. Carnival Day in August is a highlight, offering a full day of familyfriendly entertainment for visitors of all ages.

CRUISING IN WEYMOUTH

For boaters, Weymouth serves as an excellent cruising base due to its strategic location and abundance of marine facilities. Renowned as a hub for waterbased activities, visitors can embrace opportunities for boating, sailing, angling, diving plus all types of water sports.

Whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or a novice explorer, Weymouth’s waters beckon for adventure.

If you are planning to transport your boat to Weymouth, the good news is that launching is convenient with a slipway available at Commercial Road - take note that Bowleaze Cove is for Jet Skis only. With such a well-established boating infrastructure, the town offers boaters a real treat. Navigational guidance for visiting is an essential tool, so always consult local websites for up to date information.

WEYMOUTH HARBOUR

The approach to Weymouth Harbour is between two protective piers, guided at night by red transit lights marking the main

channel, while by day diamond shapes serve as navigational markers, 500m inside the pier heads on the southern side. Contact the harbour master on VHF Channel 12 to request entry to the River Wey, where a traffic light scheme operates at the pier head. The river offers a scenic journey with straightforward navigation, a maximum speed limit and no wash zone. The twin-leaf bascule bridge opens at set intervals for tall boats, with a waiting berth seaward of the bridge. Berths with depths of up to 4 metres accommodate vessels over 18 metres in length, with a controlling depth of 5.2 metres CD extending to the Ro-Ro Terminal. Mooring options are available year-round at both Weymouth Harbour and Weymouth Marina. Most visitor berths are alongside floating

pontoons with gangway access ashore, where the general tidal conditions provide secure and convenient shelter for boats.

Marine fuel can be obtained from the designated pontoon on the south side of the harbour or from mobile suppliers. Divers can find gas stocked at chandlers and dive centres and fishing fans will be happy to hear live bait is readily available at the Angling Centre, chandlers and various tackle shops.

WEYMOUTH BAY

Once out on the water, navigating Weymouth Bay comes with clear rules to ensure safety and compliance. Power boats are instructed to remain seaward of the white buoys spanning the bay.

PORTLAND BILL

Anchoring within these buoys is strictly forbidden, except for the designated area at Overcombe, marked by blue buoys at the far northeast end of Weymouth Beach.

To protect bathers, it’s essential to avoid navigating or mooring in swimming areas to prevent potential injuries from propellers and anchors. The water-ski channel, outlined by red and white buoys, serves solely for water-ski boats to access the beach. Following pick-up, all water-ski activities should shift seaward of the white buoys.

Harbour regulations dictate that water-ski boats must have at least two occupants while skiing, with one person acting as a lookout astern. Additionally, the PWC (Personal Watercraft) channel, identified by red buoys, is reserved exclusively for beach access. Once launched, all PWC activities must occur seaward of the white buoys, ensuring safety and adherence to regulations.

The waters around Portland Bill, about 7 sea miles from Weymouth Harbour mouth, are known as the Portland Race and can be hazardous, especially during spring tides. Turbulent seas often result from strong tides meeting an uneven seabed, and these can extend up to 5 miles from Portland Bill. Small boats risk being drawn in involuntarily if they venture too close. In calm conditions, maintain a minimum distance of 3 miles, increasing to around 10 miles in adverse weather. Avoid navigating between the Race and the Shambles Bank to prevent being swept into danger - high powered craft may manage this manoeuvre, but it’s still risky. An inshore passage near the Bill is also dangerous due to unpredictable tidal forces and submerged pot markers.

ANCHORAGES

For those seeking more secluded local anchorages, Chapman’s Pool beckons with its steep protective sides, offering a tranquil retreat - but boaters should exercise caution due to prevailing winds and the necessity for night entry precautions. Otherwise, Newton’s Cove is a great anchorage, nestled between Weymouth and Portland Harbour, though boaters should take note of the rocky terrain.

But what if you don’t have access to a boat? Not to worry, there are countless boat trips to try, whether you are wanting to see iconic landmarks, cruise along the coastline or simply soak up the spirit of Weymouth. From Lyme Regis to Bournemouth investigate the options for sea and river excursions, all tailored to be as leisurely or as adventurous as you want!

Fishing Fun

In Weymouth’s coastal waters you can experience truly world-class fishing - both from a boat or ashore. Whether you’re angling for trophy catches or enjoying a leisurely day on the water, there is plenty to experience with some tactical fishing spots so you can land the perfect catch! .

Weymouth Bay offers a broad range of marine life, making it ideal for both lightweight lure fishing and traditional bait fishing. When targeting species like Bass or Pollack, try using artificial lures that mimic the local baitfish. Alternatively, opt for bait fishing with squid or mackerel strips to entice larger predators like Conger Eels or Rays. Don’t forget to vary your retrieve speed and experiment with different depths to find where the fish are biting.

For anglers seeking deeper waters and larger catches, Stone Pier is the place to be. When fishing from the pier, consider using heavier tackle to handle the larger species that frequent these depths. Set up a bottom rig with a sliding sinker and a strong hook baited with fresh mackerel or squid. Keep an eye on the tide and try fishing during the incoming or outgoing flow when fish are more active. Additionally, avoid using feathers as they are banned on Stone Pier due to local regulations aimed at minimising plastic pollution.

Pleasure Pier may have shallower waters, but it remains a productive spot for anglers, especially during the summer months. Light rock fishing is popular here, targeting mini species like Wrasse and

Rockling using small jigs or soft plastics. For Mackerel fishing, try casting spinners or using float rigs baited with strips of mackerel or feathers. Be mindful of other pier users and avoid casting over crowded areas to prevent accidents.

BEACHLIFE

If you’re seeking seaside fun by the bucket load, you’ve come to the right place!

Weymouth’s award-winning beach next to the buzzing harbour offers beautiful golden stretches and it’s a Blue Flag Winner to boot. Recognised for cleanliness, safety and plentiful facilities, Weymouth Beach is consistently recognised as one of the top twenty in Europe. Overlooked by a stunning Georgian seafront, this was once an area favoured by King George III for its health benefits. Visitors today flock to embrace the sheltered bay, gradual seabed and clear waters, with safe conditions for swimmers and water sports fans alike. Expect festivals, championships and fun events in this vibrant hub of activity, while the donkey rides, pedalos plus Punch & Judy bring a touch of seaside nostalgia. After a day in the sun, a leisurely stroll leads to the historic harbour, lined with bars, shops and excellent restaurants. Tucked between Weymouth Harbour and

Portland Beach Road lies the picturesque Castle Cove, also known as Sandsfoot Cove to locals. Offering free on-road parking and gentle sandy slopes leading to warm, shallow waters, it’s no wonder this is a popular spot for families. Explore rock pools teeming with wildlife at low tide and marvel at the historic ruins of Sandsfoot Castle overlooking the beach.

Hidden next to Nothe Fort, Newton’s Cove welcomes visitors with its shingly sands and captivating views of the Isle of Portland. Accessible through Nothe Gardens, it’s a haven for rockpool explorers. While the terrain may be a little rough, the nearby fort offers parking, facilities, and stunning sea defences to admire.

For a retreat from the main Weymouth sands, Bandstand Beach, nestled next to the old Pier Bandstand, provides a peaceful escape. Lifeguards ensure safe swimming, while the nearby pier offers refreshments and facilities. While initially shingly, the beach transitions to sand closer to town.

If you are seeking a blend of scenery and shoreline, Greenhill Beach stands out as one of Weymouth’s finest. Backed by the charming Greenhill Gardens, it’s perfect for picnics and leisurely strolls. With lifeguards

on duty during peak times and a gradual slope into the water, it’s an inviting spot for swimmers. Amenities such as a cafe add to its appeal, while the adjacent South West Coast Path beckons hikers after a day on the sands.

WEYMOUTH’S SURROUNDINGS

While Weymouth itself offers plenty to see and do, the surrounding area is definitely worth exploring. Nature lovers will appreciate the rugged beauty of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches for 95 miles along the Dorset and East Devon coastline. Here you will discover no end of dramatic cliffs,

hidden coves and fossil-rich beaches. Alternatively for families, attractions like Monkey World, the Tank Museum and the Abbotsbury Children’s Farm offer fun-filled days out that are sure to entertain kids of all ages.

History buffs can step back in time with a visit to nearby attractions such as the ruins of Corfe Castle, the ancient hillfort of Maiden Castle, or the picturesque village of Abbotsbury with its swannery and subtropical gardens. Here are five top picks to explore:

Step into history at Nothe Fort, a carefully restored Victorian

stronghold overlooking Weymouth Bay. Operated by the Weymouth Civic Society, this museum and tourist attraction offers guided tours through its ramparts and gun deck, providing stunning panoramic views of the bay. From its rich history to its breathtaking vistas, Nothe Fort promises an unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages.

Perched atop a hill with sweeping views of the coastline, St Catherine’s Chapel is a must-see for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. This significant chapel offers not only picturesque views but also insights into Weymouth’s religious history and architectural heritage. Take a moment to soak up the calm atmosphere and appreciate the beauty of this ancient site.

The Tudor House Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of a middle-class family in early 17th-century Weymouth. As one of the town’s few remaining Tudor buildings, the museum offers guided tours and educational experiences, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Weymouth’s heritage. Explore the furnished rooms, admire the period architecture and discover the stories that shaped this historic house.

Venture just north of Weymouth to discover the iconic Osmington White Horse, a sculpted figure carved into the chalk hills. Depicting King George I on horseback, this landmark offers

panoramic views of the South Dorset Downs and the surrounding countryside. With such breathtaking scenery and a truly unique spectacle, this is a place that leaves a lasting impression. Take a trip into the past at the Abbotsbury Abbey remains, a Benedictine monastery founded in the eleventh century. Although closed during Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539, the remains of this once-great abbey still stand as a tribute to Weymouth’s medieval religious life. Explore the atmospheric ruins and imagine the bustling life of the monks who once called this place home.

READY STEADY RIB!

A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO PLANNING AND PREPARING FOR RIB ADVENTURES WITH THE GINGER AGENCY

An adventure along the UK’s coastline in a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) promises exceptional freedom and exciting activities. From the thrill of exploring hidden coves to enjoying water sports and fishing expeditions with family and friends, the possibilities are endless. However, beyond all the fun, safety should always remain a top priority.

RIB ownership opens up a wonderful world of opportunities on the water, with a variety of factors to take into consideration. Versatile and handy, RIBs offer stability and flexibility - it is no wonder they are a

go-to choice for coastal travels and leisure activities.

Understanding the basics is crucial for maximising enjoyment, with various hull shapes and engine sizes catering to diverse preferences and budgets.RIBs are certainly appreciated for their fuel efficiency and affordability, providing ample payload capacity and reduced operational expenses for memorable outings. Moreover, their shallow draft enables easy deployment and launching from various sites, including beaches and rivers, enhancing accessibility and versatility.

Consider factors beyond just wake size or speed. Determine your intended activities, assess your boating preferences and ensure the boat’s size accommodates storage needs, plus allows for comfortable movement on board, especially for longer trips. Also consider options of where to keep your RIB and make sure these align with your convenience and transportation needs.

If you’ve got all this covered and you are ready to get going, let’s talk about RIBs!

Aluminium RIBs and tenders from 2.4m to 5.8m

THE BASICS

making the RIB a remarkably stable boat, even in rough seas. With outboard motors mounted on the transom, this also adds to easy maintenance and surprising agility. With engine size and type depending on the size and intended use of the RIB, this gives options ranging from fuel-efficient engines to high-performance motors that suit every boating lifestyle.

ADVANTAGES

Understanding the anatomy of a RIB is crucial for both enthusiasts and novices alike. Characterised by their unique design, combining the rigid, solid hull constructed from fibreglass or aluminium, with inflatable tubes, RIBs are typically made of exceptionally durable materials such as PVC or Hypalon. This unique blend ensures enhanced buoyancy, increased stability and impressive manoeuvrability. The inflatable tubes, or sponsons, along the sides of the hull, act as built-in fenders and support even weight distribution,

With a long list of plus points to RIB ownership, versatility is a winner - ideal for a number of activities, from relaxed cruising to fast-paced water sports. The ability to navigate shallow waters and cross choppy seas makes these boats highly reliable; well-suited for exploring rugged coastlines and accessing more remote locations. Additionally, sturdy construction and agile handling make them perfect for towing water skiers and inflatable toys.

The good news is that taking your RIB on a road trip is a breeze. Easy to transport, wherever your adventures may be, your boat can come along too. With easy-totow and launch designs, RIBs make the perfect holiday companion, whether you’re exploring the UK or venturing abroad.

Another benefit of these small inflatable boats is that they are a lot more convenient from a regulatory standpoint. Still, before venturing out on your boat, it is

important to be fully aware of the relevant requirements in your area, for example having permission to launch.

BE PREPARED

Before making any boating plans, be fully prepared so you can enjoy a safe and fun experience. Start with a comprehensive inspection of your RIB to ensure everything is in working order. Check the engine’s performance, including starting it up, idling smoothly and responding to throttle adjustments. Verify that fuel levels are more than enough for your planned journey and fill up if necessary. Inspect safety equipment such as life jackets, flares, fire extinguishers and first aid kits so they are easily located and in good condition - replace any expired items and replenish supplies as required.

PLAN YOUR ADVENTURE

Before setting out, it’s important to take time to research your chosen destination. This includes studying the coastline, understanding tidal patterns, and checking weather forecasts. The UK offers a broad scope of different landscapes, from sandy beaches to rugged cliffs, each presenting both challenges and attractions. A full understanding of the local geography and environmental conditions will help you navigate safely and make the most of every journey.

Identify places of interest along the coast, such as secluded coves, historic landmarks, nearby beaches, or wildlife hotspots, whatever suits your intended trip. Plotting your route on a nautical chart or GPS device will help you visualise your journey and anticipate any challenges. Be sure to also identify potential hazards, such as rocky outcrops, shallow waters, or strong currents, and plan alternate routes if necessary. Also do familiarise yourself with the location of emergency facilities, such as marinas, harbours, or coastguard stations, just in case of unforeseen circumstances.

YOUR CREW

Do think carefully about the experience level of your passengers. Ensure that everyone on board is comfortable with the planned itinerary and capable of handling the boat safely. If you’re travelling with inexperienced members, provide advice and supervision to ensure their confidence on the water, which will give everyone peace of mind. Additionally, make a checklist of essential items for your trip, including safety gear, navigation tools and emergency supplies - showing your crew where they are for easy access.

SAFETY ONBOARD

Before departing, take time to familiarise all passengers with safety procedures and emergency protocols. Show them the location and proper use of important equipment and demonstrate how to deploy and operate items such as throw lines or rescue buoys in the event of an emergency. Establish clear

responsibilities and rights while underway. Life jackets are essential for everyone on board and should be worn at all times, as well as having any protective clothing to stay warm and dry, ready for any weather conditions.

Proper loading and weight distribution on your RIB is the formula to maintaining stability and manoeuvrability on the water. Disperse any heavy items evenly throughout the boat to prevent it listing to one side. Avoid overloading beyond your boats’ recommended capacity, as this will affect performance and safety. Secure loose gear and stow away any items that could shift or become airborne while underway. Additionally, be mindful of weight distribution when boarding passengers and adjust their positions to maintain a good balance.

Additionally, sticking to international maritime rules such as COLREGS is crucial, especially when navigating open waters. Pay attention to your boat’s CE category rating (CAT), denoted as B (Offshore), C (Inshore), or D (Inland or sheltered coastal waters), as this determines its recommended usage.

FAMILY FUN

A great family day out on a RIB is pretty unbeatable for so many reasons. Secure seating is a big plus point, ensuring comfort for all passengers, plus ample storage space, allowing you to pack a picnic and all the essentials for a fun day out. Thanks to the hull design cutting effortlessly through the water, a smooth

RIBs often come equipped with amenities such as a wheelhouse, cabin, toilet, bathroom and kitchen facilities, providing a safe and comfortable space for the whole family to relax. They are also excellent tools to teach family members how to drive or dock a boat, thanks to their protective inflatable collar that reduces the impact of bumps (within reason!).... And if you are worried about how cool you look, RIBs are not only functional but stylish, with a vast array of options available, so family adventures can be as functional or as funky as you want them to be!

AMAZING ACTIVITIES

Your RIB is a brilliantly versatile platform to enjoy a variety of water sports activities, catering to thrill-seekers and leisure enthusiasts alike! Waterskiing, wakeboarding, plus fun with toys and inflatables are hugely popular, offering uplifting experiences for all skill levels. As entertainment that can be enjoyed together with friends and family, water sports are perfect for group outings and social gatherings on the water. Safety is a big consideration to prevent accidents and injuries where water sports are concerned. Use appropriate tow ropes securely attached to the RIB’s towing point, maintain a safe distance from other vessels, swimmers and obstacles, observe dedicated activity areas, employ proper spotting techniques and ensure participants wear life jackets and helmets where appropriate.

For hobbies such as snorkelling, you simply need a boat that can go into

heavy, which warrants space

moving, and remember, you’ll also need a bit of room on the boat to put on and take off equipment. The reduced freeboard and soft tubes make RIBs an ideal platform for pretty much all activities, such as snorkelling, spearfishing and swimming, as they are usually easy to get into and out of the water.

Your RIB can also offer a great fishing experience, with stability that allows anglers to manoeuvre the deck with ease and confidence, free from concerns of capsizing. This makes for easy casting, fish retrieval and general mobility on board. The RIB’s low freeboard minimises the risk of losing catches during the haul, while superior seakeeping capabilities ensure safe navigation even in adverse conditions.

At all times keep in mind we are stewards of the marine environment. Enjoy time on the water responsibly and minimise impact on the fragile ecosystems and wildlife habitats. Avoid disturbing marine life by steering clear of sensitive areas such as seagrass beds and bird nesting sites. Dispose of waste properly and refrain from littering or polluting the water with debris. Follow designated water sports zones and stick to speed limits to reduce any disturbance to marine life and respect the marine environment, mitigating the risk of habitat damage.

ONGOING MANAGEMENT

Maintenance is crucial for ensuring the longevity and performance of every RIB so you can be confident of continued reliable and safe travels. Start by rinsing with fresh water after each use to prevent saltwater

corrosion, followed by thorough drying to spot any signs of wear early on. Keep fuel tanks full to prevent condensation buildup or fuel contamination, and regularly use your RIB to maintain equipment functionality and spot any issues promptly. Service your engine as recommended, checking oil levels and following manufacturer intervals. Don’t forget to regularly check and maintain proper tube inflation, this will preserve shape and hull integrity, using pressure release valves if necessary. Ensure quality bilge pumps are installed to prevent water accumulation, protect glass and tubes with UV-blocking polishes to prevent deterioration and definitely cover your RIB when not in use to protect it from debris and UV damage. Lastly, schedule a yearly deep clean; with plenty of TLC and an annual spa treatment your RIB will remain in top condition!

RIBs are the epitome of adventure and freedom on the

water, providing fantastic opportunities for widespread exploration and recreation. Naturally it is essential to approach any journeys with careful planning, thorough preparation and a clear responsibility to safety. By sticking to these principles, boaters can confidently enjoy an incredible experience, knowing they are wellequipped to take to the water and relish the flexibility that these mighty fun-bundles can offer!

TO YOUR GARDEN THIS SUMMER WATERSIDE LIVING

When it comes to creating a relaxing and inviting outdoor space, there are endless possibilities for inspiration. This summer, why not bring a touch of the seaside to your very own garden?

Incorporating a seaside theme into your outdoor oasis not only adds a unique and refreshing element to your space, but it also creates a soothing and tranquil atmosphere. Whether you live near the coast or simply have a love for the beach, read on to discover how to bring the seaside to your garden and create your own coastal retreat.

Creating a seaside garden theme can instantly transport you to a coastal paradise, even if you’re miles away from the beach. The allure of this theme lies in its ability to evoke a sense of calmness and tranquility. Imagine the soothing sound of crashing waves, the salty ocean breeze, and the feel of warm sand beneath your feet - all within the confines of your own garden.

A seaside garden theme allows you to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse yourself in a serene and relaxing atmosphere. It provides the perfect backdrop for outdoor gatherings and intimate moments of relaxation. The use of natural materials, such as driftwood, seashells, and pebbles, adds an authentic touch, creating a sense of being by the seashore.

When it comes to creating a seaside garden theme, selecting the right plants is crucial in capturing the essence of the coastal atmosphere. Opt for plants that thrive in sandy soil and are drought-tolerant to mimic the beach environment.

One popular choice is ornamental grasses, such as pampas grass or blue fescue, as

they resemble the swaying seagrass found along the shoreline. These grasses provide movement and add texture to your garden, evoking a beach-like feel.

Incorporate native coastal plants like sea lavender, sea holly, or beach roses to enhance the seaside vibe. These plants not ▶

To complete the look, don’t forget to add some succulents like agave or sedum, which thrive in sandy soil and excel at retaining water. Their unique shapes and textures will add interest to your garden, mimicking the rocky coastal landscape.

t’s not just about the plants. To truly bring the coastal atmosphere to your outdoor space, incorporating beach-inspired elements is key. Start by adding some rustic wooden furniture, such as a weathered driftwood bench or a reclaimed wood dining set. This will not only create a relaxed and beachy vibe but also provide comfortable seating for you to enjoy your garden oasis.

Next, consider adding some beach-themed decor, such as seashells, starfish, or even a nautical rope sign. These small touches can instantly transform your garden into a seaside retreat. Don’t forget to include a sandy area, where you can place a few lounge chairs or a hammock for ultimate relaxation. This will mimic the feeling of lying on a sandy beach, allowing you to soak up the sun and enjoy the summer breeze. Lastly, consider adding a fire pit or a beach-themed outdoor lighting to create a cozy and inviting ambiance during the evenings. This will extend the enjoyment of your seaside garden into the night.

To further enhance the coastal atmosphere in your garden, you can add various nautical accessories that will instantly transport you to a seaside getaway. These items can be both functional and decorative, adding charm and

character to your outdoor space.

One popular nautical accessory is a ship’s wheel. Hang it on a wall or prop it up as a centrepiece to bring a touch of maritime history to your garden. This iconic symbol will not only add visual interest, but it can also serve as a conversation starter during gatherings with friends and family. Another option is to incorporate rope accents into your garden decor. Wrap a thick rope around the base of a tree or use it to create a unique border for a flower bed. You can also hang rope hammocks or create a rope barrier to section off different areas of your garden. You can also consider adding some vintage fishing nets or fishing floats to create an authentic coastal look. Hang the nets on walls or drape them over structures to give the illusion of being by the sea. Scatter the

fishing floats throughout your garden for a pop of colour and whimsy.

Remember, the key is to carefully select and place these nautical accessories so that they blend seamlessly with the overall seaside theme. With these additions, your garden will truly become a coastal haven that captures the essence of the beach no matter where you are.

Maintaining and caring for your seaside garden is essential to keep its coastal charm alive throughout the summer. Here are some tips to ensure your garden stays vibrant and healthy:

First and foremost, regular watering is crucial to keep your plants hydrated in the summer heat. Make sure to water deeply and avoid shallow watering, as this can encourage shallow root growth. Consider installing a drip irrigation system or using a soaker hose to ensure even watering.

Additionally, proper pruning is essential to promote healthy growth and maintain the shape of your plants. Trim any overgrown branches or dead foliage to keep your garden looking neat and tidy.

and consider using mulch or ground cover plants to help suppress their growth.

Lastly, don’t forget to fertilise your plants regularly to provide them with the nutrients they need to thrive. Choose a fertilizer specifically formulated for your plants’ needs and follow the instructions on the packaging.

By following these maintenance tips, your seaside garden will remain an inviting oasis throughout the summer, allowing you to enjoy the vibrant beauty of your coastal-themed retreat.

Furthermore, regular weeding is necessary to prevent unwanted plants from taking over your garden. Remove any weeds promptly

Transforming your garden space into a coastal oasis this summer is easier than you might think. With a few simple additions and creative touches, you can create a relaxing and peaceful space that captures the essence of the seaside. Start by adding elements that evoke the beach, driftwood, seashells, and lanterns. These natural elements will instantly give your garden a coastal feel. Next, consider adding a water feature, such as a small pond or a fountain, to bring the soothing sound of waves. Don’t forget to incorporate beach-inspired colours into your outdoor furniture and cushions, from soft blues to sandy neutrals. Add some beach umbrellas for shade and hang up colourful bunting to complete the coastal look. With these ideas in mind, your spot of seclusion will become a tranquil escape reminiscent of a seaside getaway.

Significant savings on your electricity bill with our class leading electricity management system designed to minimise your carbon footprint.

Works with or without solar - Solar integration is not essential for the functionality of our system. Works with most existing solar and won’t impact your feed-in tariff (FIT) if you have one.

No more power cuts - power to your entire house can continue when the grid goes down.

Up to 77% reduction in your energy costs.

The way we all use energy is changing.

WIs it time to rethink yours?

hen energy prices started to rise in 2021, Offgrid Pro co-founders Jon Stretton & Paul Knight were hit with huge electricity bills in excess of £500 per month for their homes. Shocked by what they were now faced with paying, they decided to combine their 25 years of experience within the energy storage sector and design an electrical system for their personal use. What they created was an energy ecosystem that met almost 100% of their daily energy needs. They were so blown away by the savings achieved they decided to bring their solution to market and now help households with large electricity bills reduce costs by up to 70%.

In recent years, solar energy has become a popular eco-friendly solution for many homes. However, without an energy storage system, much of the solar energy is potentially lost. Unused daytime solar power often goes back to the national grid, with little to no financial benefit, only for you to buy it back later that day at

higher rates of 24p or more per unit. The OffGrid Pro system solves this problem, allowing you to store energy until needed.

When we built our initial system, Jon and I were focused on minimising the running costs for high-energy amenities like hot tubs, swimming pools, air source heat pumps, and air conditioning units, said Paul, as these were very much part of our infrastructure. However, our system can also help reduce heating oil consumption, further cutting down on overall energy expenses while at the same time reducing a property's carbon footprint. Our aim now is focused on helping every customer achieve significant savings on their electricity bills while minimising their carbon footprint, something that’s really important in our fight against climate change."

Other key benefits of the OffGrid Pro system include how versatile the system is,

as it can work with or without solar power and is fully compatible with most existing solar installations without impacting any feed-in tariff. It also offers incredible reliability, keeping you fully powered in the event of any future power cuts.

Installation of a bespoke system is seamless, with OffGrid Pro handling all the necessary approvals, including collaborating with the Distribution Network Operators to ensure a smooth transition. With a system that capitalises on harnessing low-cost night-time tariffs, energy surpluses and controlled usage management, it's no surprise that you can achieve a return on your investment within 5-6 years, often faster. RECIPE: BLACK BREAM & MEDITERRANEAN VEGETABLE BROTH

Imagine dining on your boat, the sun setting, and a gentle sea breeze carrying the salty scent of the sea. Black Bream & Mediterranean Vegetable Broth is the perfect dish to complement this perfect summer scene. Fresh, local, simple ingredients combine to create a meal that’s as nourishing as it is delicious. Here’s how to bring a taste of the sea to your table on board

METHOD:

1 Prep Your Veggies: Cut the red pepper, courgette, red onion, garlic, and aubergine into rough chunks. Halve the baby potatoes. In a medium-heat pan, sauté the vegetables and potatoes until they start to gain a little colour.

2

Simmer the Broth: Add the fish stock and saffron to the pan, allowing the mixture to simmer for about 5 minutes.

3 Cook the Fish: In a separate pan, heat a little olive oil over low to medium heat. Place the bream fillets skin side down and cook until the skin is crispy and the fish is almost done.

4

Add the Shellfish: Add the mussels and clams to the broth. If you’ve foraged these yourself along the coastline, mussels from sea walls or pontoons and clams from the foreshore at low tide, they will add an extra touch of local flavour. Cook for 3 minutes.

5 Finish the Fish: Once the bream’s skin is crispy and the fish is almost cooked through, flip the fillets over and let them rest.

6

Add the Seaweed: Rinse the seaweed well and add it to the broth for about 1 minute. Foraged seaweed is a nutritious and authentic addition, as all English seaweed is edible and packed with nutrients.

Ingredients - 2 fillets of Black Bream - Handful of mussels or clams - 1 red pepper - 1 courgette - 1 red onion - 2 cloves of garlic - 1 aubergine - 10 baby potatoes - 100ml fish stock - 1 large fresh tomato (yellow preferred) - 50ml good extra virgin olive oil - Seaweed (foraged fresh if possible) - Pinch of saffron

7

Assemble Your Dish: In a large bowl, combine the vegetables, mussels or clams, and seaweed. Spoon over the broth, drizzle with a good dash of highquality olive oil, and place the bream fillets on top. Serve immediately with a chilled glass of white wine and some rustic bread.

This Black Bream & Mediterranean Vegetable Broth is perfect for enjoying as a relaxed meal either on your boat or ashore, surrounded by the natural beauty of the coastline. Sit back and enjoy the view!

SETAG YACHTS

CELEBRATING THREE YEARS OF UNPARALLELED REFIT EXCELLENCE

It’s incredible to think that three years have flown by since we embarked on a journey to revolutionise the luxury yacht market. From a simple yet gamechanging idea by founder, Chris Gates, SETAG Yachts has soared to new heights – establishing ourselves as the go-to for yacht refits.

Reflecting on our progress within three short years – it’s clear that our dedication to quality, value for money, innovation and customer satisfaction has propelled us forward.

We have learnt that trust is at the centre of all big decisions and our team’s pedigree of, combined, over 200+ years’ experience working for some of the most revered yacht companies in the market, including Princess, Sunseeker & Fairlinedesigning, engineering, and manufacturing these beautiful yachts. We bring a unique combination of skills to each project: a shared know-how and commitment to unparalleled excellence in maritime tailoring.

“Boatbuilding is in our blood, offering you the confidence and reassurance that your treasured yacht is in the hands of the experts.” – Chris Gates, CEO.

Having now completed over 70 design & refit projects, from a diverse range of different yacht brands – our growth trajectory has been impressive. The demand for our service has surged, with numerous projects currently in the pipeline and a steady flow of enquires. The influx of interest not only highlights the effectiveness of our approach but also the shifting mindset with the industry.

Our clients prove to be our greatest champions. Their satisfaction with the transformations we create has become a powerful testament to our expertise and dedication. Through word of mouth and enthusiastic showcases of their refurbished vessels, they’ve become invaluable ambassadors of SETAG, expanding our reach within the boating community.

SUSTAINABILITY

The greatest contribution to sustainability is to reuse.

Refurbishing an existing yacht is inherently more sustainable than manufacturing a brand new one, as it reduces the demand for raw materials and energy consumption associated with new constructions. This approach not only appeals to environmentally conscious buyers but also aligns with broader global trends towards sustainability.

THE ART OF BESPOKE: ELEVATING LUXURY TO NEW HEIGHTS

At SETAG, we believe the journey to bespoke luxury begins long before the final unveiling of the transformed yacht. From the initial spark of inspiration to the moment you set sail on your exquisitely refitted vessel, every step of the process is meticulously curated to ensure a seamless and truly transformative experience.

As we celebrate our 3rd anniversary, it is only fitting to unveil our most ambitious project yet – the transformation of a 2014 Princess 72 yacht into the pinnacle of opulence and sophistication. This will be our second time refitting this model & one of our entire teams’ favourites - several team members having played pivotal roles in manufacturing these vessels originally. This endeavour, as all our projects, stand as testament to our unwavering commitment to excellence and marks a milestone in our journey of crafting bespoke vessels.

Our esteemed client, introduced to us at the Southampton International Boat Show 2023 by a cherished former refit client, shares our passion for unparalleled luxury, yachting and bespoke craftsmanship. Opting for discerning sensibility over the allure of a brand-new vessel, our client chose to acquire a pre-owned Princess 72, recognising the value of the Third Way –new boat quality at pre-owned prices.

Stepping on board our 2006 Portofino

46 that we had on display at the Boat Show (as discussed in a previous British Boating issue), sealed the way forward for our client - long lead times and significant costs associated with new yachts were deemed unjustifiable, as they sought a yacht for the forthcoming season in the Middle East. Our proposition of an immediately available pre-owned vessel (once sourced), coupled with the opportunity to tailor every aspect to their exact taste and requirements resonated deeply. For us, personalisation is the ultimate luxury, and we have spared no expense in time & effort to ensure that every detail of this project reflects exclusivity and refinement.

Taking time to understand our clients’ unique preferences, desires, and aspirations for their yacht, allows us to curate a vision – laying the foundations for a partnership built on trust and collaboration. Drawing upon decades of expertise within our team and a profound understanding of our client’s bespoke requirements, we embarked on a journey of meticulous curation. Leveraging our extensive network and industry expertise, we assisted with sourcing the yacht for purchase, to acting as client representative during land & sea trials in Turkey, organising insurance, transport,

designing the refurbishment content and conducting the entire refit process. Ensuring that all details exude an aura of exclusivity and refinement, even before the yacht arrived with us at our HQ in Plymouth - our dedication to exemplary customer service shore through, guiding our client with unwavering insight.

Our Design team, in close collaboration with the client, conceptualised a scheme that epitomises luxury in its truest form. Pushing the boundaries with each project, we continue to innovate, creating custom spaces that exude splendour and sophistication – exploring new concepts, materials, and technologies to create exceptional spaces.

To the state-of-the-art technological enhancements seamlessly integrated throughout the vessel…with a focus on both aesthetic appeal and functional sophistication, we incorporate cutting-edge technology for enhanced comfort, convenience and performance. The engineering aspects are not overlooked, with upgrades designed to enhance performance, efficiency, and overall functionality. Custom designed & manufactured furniture internally & externally further emphasises the

bespoke nature of this project. Every element has been meticulously crafted and tailored to our client’s preferences and needs to surpass the expectations of even the most discerning visitor on board.

CHALLENGING THE NORM

This project truly challenges the need for new boat purchases, by offering a level of design and customisation typically associated with larger, more expensive yachts. The level of design will be comparable to the quality seen on 40m plus yachts and the customisation of every space on board - a luxury not found in production yachts. This is a true embodiment of confidence and style

– with the unmistakable SY badge of exclusivity.

Why blend in and compromise with the previous owner’s taste & specification when you can have the ultimate luxury –personalisation…to the smallest detail.

Throughout the entire refit process, we prioritise open communication and transparency, keeping our clients informed and involved every step of the way. Regular progress updates, consultations, and site visits ensure that their vision is realised with uncompromising attention to detail and quality, with excellence in craftsmanship.

The SETAG refitting experience transcends yacht transformations – it’s about embarking on a bespoke journey of discovery, creativity, and unparalleled luxury. From the initial consultation to the final unveiling and beyond, we are dedicated to exceeding your expectations and creating unforgettable experiences that inspire and delight. With a unified mission to create unmatched luxury and precision craftsmanship to the highest specification - our team of artisans, designers and craftsmen now embark on the journey to transform the yacht into a breathtaking masterpiece. Our aim extends

beyond functional enhancement; we strive to achieve the peak of maritime extravagance, creating a new standard in bespoke luxury that redefines the art of yachting.

Overall, SETAG are not just about luxury but also about innovation, customisation, and exclusivity – with a commitment to creating a unique and exceptional experience for our clients in yacht design and ownership.

Summer Boating

SAFETY CONSCIOUS STYLE

As the long-awaited summer months finally land, many boating enthusiasts in Britain are looking forward to spending time on the water. However, it’s important to dress appropriately for boating activities to ensure safety and comfort. Whether you are an experienced sailor or a beginner, these essential tips and recommendations on what to wear for summer boating in Britain will help you stay safe and practical but with a kick of style as you take to the water. From choosing the right clothing

materials to selecting appropriate footwear, we’ve got you covered.

When it comes to boating attire, safety should be your top priority. You need to consider a few important factors to ensure that you are adequately prepared for any potential risks on the water. Firstly, it’s crucial to choose clothing that will protect you from the sun’s harmful rays. Look for garments with built-in UV protection or wear lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and shorts made from sun-blocking

fabrics. A wide-brimmed hat and polarised sunglasses will also help shield your face and eyes from the sun.

Secondly, you need to think about the unpredictability of the weather. Dressing in layers is a wise choice, as it allows you to adjust your clothing to changing conditions. Bring a waterproof jacket or windbreaker as well, as sudden rain showers or gusty winds can take you by surprise Furthermore, consider the possibility of getting wet. Choose quick-

drying materials for your clothing, such as nylon or polyester, and avoid heavy materials that will weigh you down if you end up in the water. By keeping these safety considerations in mind, you can ensure that your boating attire is not only stylish but also capable of protecting you in any situation.

When spending a day out on the water, it’s crucial to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays. The intensity of the sun’s rays can be amplified when you’re surrounded by water, so taking the necessary precautions is essential for your safety and well-being.

One of the first steps in choosing proper sun protection is investing in a high-quality sunscreen with a broad spectrum of at least SPF 30 or higher. Apply it generously to all exposed areas of your skin, including your face, neck, and ears. Don’t forget about often-overlooked areas such as the back of your hands, as they can easily get sunburned too. In addition to sunscreen, consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat that provides shade for your face, neck, and shoulders. This will help protect you from the direct sunlight and prevent sunburns, which can spoil your boating experience. Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of sunglasses, opt for polarised sunglasses with UV protection to shield your eyes from harmful UV rays. Look for sunglasses that wrap around your face and provide peripheral protection, as this will further reduce your exposure to the sun. By choosing the proper sun protection,

including sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and polarised sunglasses, you’ll be well-equipped to enjoy your summer boating adventures with peace of mind.

While it’s tempting to dress casually for the warm summer months, it’s important to remember that boating can come with its own set of challenges. From unpredictable weather to potential slips and falls, the right clothing can make all the difference in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable boating experience. Function should be the primary focus when selecting your boating apparel. Look for lightweight and breathable fabrics that will keep you cool in the heat, but also provide enough coverage and protection from the elements, opt for quick-drying materials that will help keep you comfortable in case of splashes or rain showers.

the rigors of the water while still looking effortlessly stylish. Look for items like moisture-wicking shirts, UV-protected shorts and water-resistant jackets or windbreakers.

Footwear is another crucial aspect of boating apparel. Non-slip and waterproof shoes are a must to prevent accidents and ensure stability on slippery surfaces. Choose a pair that offers good arch support and sturdy soles, allowing you to comfortably navigate the boat and pontoon.

In terms of style, there are plenty of options available that strike the perfect balance between fashion and functionality. Consider investing in a versatile and practical boating outfit that can withstand

Remember, boating is all about relaxation and fun, so don’t forget to incorporate your personal style into your boating attire. Choose colours and patterns that reflect your personality and make you feel confident on the water.

Lastly, don’t forget about accessories to enhance your comfort. A wide-brimmed

hat made from UV-protective materials, polarised sunglasses to reduce glare, and a lightweight scarf or bandana to protect your neck from the sun should be part of your boating ensemble.

By considering these fabrics and materials, you can gear up for a comfortable and enjoyable summer boating season.

Now that we’ve covered the basics of what to wear for a comfortable boating experience, let’s talk about how to add some style and flair to your outfit. While safety should always be the top priority, there’s no reason why you can’t look good while out on the water.

Accessorising is key when it comes to completing your summer boating look. First and foremost, invest in a high-quality waterproof watch. Not only will it keep you on track with the time, but it will also add a touch of sophistication to your outfit.

For the ladies,

a wide-brimmed floppy hat not only offers sun protection but also gives you a chic and glamorous look. Pair it with oversized sunglasses and a colourful sarong to create a beachy vibe that’s perfect for a day on the boat. Gentlemen, stylish swim trunks or shorts in a fun pattern or bright colour can instantly elevate your outfit. Complement it with a well-fitted polo shirt or a lightweight linen shirt for a smart casual look. Remember, the key is to choose accessories that are functional and practical for boating, while still showcasing your personal style. With the right accessories, you can truly make a fashion statement on the water this summer.

Summer Sun

USING SOLAR PANELS TO SAIL

FURTHER FOR LONGER…

As more people are embracing the benefits of renewable energy, the use of solar panels is becoming increasingly popular. While solar panels are commonly associated with homes and businesses, they can also be a great addition to boats. Solar panels are a sustainable and efficient way to generate electricity on a boat, providing power for lighting, electronics, and other electrical equipment. In this article, we will explore the advantages of using solar panels on a boat and how they can help you sail longer and further.

By installing solar panels on your boat, you can enjoy a multitude of advantages. Firstly, it allows you to harness the power of the sun, providing a renewable and sustainable source of energy. This not only reduces your carbon footprint but also

helps you save money on fuel costs in the long run.

Another advantage is the increased independence and freedom it provides. With solar panels, you no longer need to rely solely on the boat’s engine or generator for power; instead, you can use solar energy to power your lighting, electronics, and other electrical equipment. This means you can stay at anchor for longer periods, exploring remote and off-grid locations without worrying about battery power.

Furthermore, solar panels require minimal maintenance and are highly durable, making them ideal for marine use. They are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions, including saltwater corrosion, ensuring longevity and reliability.

MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE

When it comes to selecting the right solar panel for your boat, there are a few key considerations to keep in mind. The first is the size and power output of the panel. Understanding your boat’s energy needs, including the electrical equipment you will be using, will help determine the appropriate panel size and power output.

You should also consider the type of solar panel technology. Monocrystalline panels, for example, are known for their high efficiency and compact design, making them a popular choice for boats with limited space. Polycrystalline panels, on the other hand, tend to be more costeffective and are suitable for boats with ample space for installation.

Additionally, it is important to take into

account factors such as mounting options, durability, and warranty when choosing a solar panel. Look for panels specifically designed for marine use, as they will be built to withstand the unique challenges and conditions of a boating environment.

Installing solar panels on your boat is an important step towards harnessing the power of the sun to extend your sailing range. While the installation process may seem daunting, with careful planning and preparation, it can be a straightforward task.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Before getting started, it is crucial to determine the best location for your panels. Ideally, you want to choose a spot on your boat that receives maximum sunlight throughout the day. This could be

on the deck, bimini top, or even a custommade mounting structure.

Next, you will need to mount the solar panels securely. Depending on the type of panels you have chosen, there are different mounting options available such as adhesive mounts, tilt mounts, or rigid frames. Ensure that the panels are securely fastened to prevent any movement or damage while the boat is in motion.

Once the panels are mounted, you will need to connect them to your boat’s electrical system. This typically involves running cables from the panels to a charge controller, which regulates the energy flow between the panels and the batteries. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and consult a professional if needed to ensure a safe and efficient wiring setup.

Finally, don’t forget to test your solar panel system before setting sail. Check that the panels are charging your batteries and that all connections are secure. Regular maintenance is also key to keep your solar panels in optimal condition. Maintaining and maximising the efficiency of your solar panels is crucial for ensuring their optimal performance and longevity. Regular cleaning is essential to remove dirt, salt, and any other debris that may accumulate on the surface of the panels. This can be done using a soft brush or cloth and a mild detergent, followed by rinsing with clean fresh water.

Inspecting your panels for any signs of wear or damage is also important. Look for cracks, loose connections, or signs of corrosion, and promptly address any issues that arise. Additionally, check the

wiring and connections regularly to ensure they are secure and free from any damage.

To further maximise the efficiency of your solar panels, consider positioning them at the optimal angle to receive the maximum amount of sunlight throughout the day. This can be done by using tilt mounts or adjustable racks that allow you to adjust the panel’s angle relative to the sun’s position.

Incorporating a solar charge controller can also help optimise the charging process by regulating the energy flow from the panels to the batteries. This prevents overcharging and extends the lifespan of your batteries.

MAINTANANCE MATTERS

By regularly maintaining and maximising the efficiency of your solar panels, you can ensure a reliable and sustainable power source for your boat, allowing you to sail longer and further with the help of the sun’s energy.

Using solar panels on your boat can greatly enhance your sailing experience, but it’s important to be aware of the challenges and limitations that may arise. One major challenge is the dependency on sunlight as a power source. Weather conditions, such as cloudy days or heavy shade, can significantly reduce the panel’s efficiency. To overcome this limitation, it’s essential to have a backup power source, such as a generator or batteries, to ensure a continuous power supply during periods of low sunlight.

Another limitation is the limited surface area available for installing solar panels on a boat. Therefore, it’s crucial to select high-efficiency panels that can generate maximum power with minimum space. Additionally, consider using flexible or foldable panels that can be easily stored when not in use, optimising the limited space on your boat.

Lastly, it’s important to implement an

effective energy management system to monitor and regulate the usage of solar power. This will ensure that you don’t drain your batteries excessively and have sufficient power for essential onboard systems.

By understanding and addressing these challenges and limitations, you can make the most out of your solar panels on your boat, allowing you to sail longer and further with the renewable energy of the sun.

To further explore the practical benefits of using solar panels on boats, let’s take a look at the experiences of some boat owners who have incorporated this renewable energy source into their sailing adventures.

One boat owner, John, installed solar panels on his sailboat three years ago. He recounts how this decision drastically extended his cruising range, allowing him to venture into remote areas without having to worry about finding a power source. John also noted that having solar panels reduced his reliance on noisy and fuel-consuming generators, creating a more peaceful and eco-friendly sailing experience.

Similarly, Sarah, another boat owner, emphasised the convenience of having a

sustainable power supply while at anchor. With the ability to charge her batteries through sunlight, she no longer had to worry about finding a marina to plug into shore power or limiting her time at anchor to conserve energy. Sarah found that solar panels provided her with the freedom to explore new destinations and spend more time in beautiful, secluded bays.

These case studies highlight the positive impact of incorporating solar panels into boat systems. As more boat owners adopt this technology, advancements in solar panel efficiency, portability, and storage capacity will continue to enhance the overall sailing experience.

In conclusion, incorporating solar panels into your boat’s energy system can greatly enhance your sailing experience. Not only does it provide the freedom to explore remote areas without worrying about power sources, but it also reduces reliance on noisy generators and eliminates the need to constantly find marinas for charging.

Solar panels on board your boat are proving to have huge practical benefits, extending cruising ranges, allowing for longer stays in secluded bays, and creating a more peaceful and eco-friendly boating environment.

THANES MARINE Bringing fun and the freedom of affordable boating to British waters!

In 2013 in the city of Gela in the region of Sicily, Italy the ‘Marine Site’ brand was born, a visionary of style, practicality, and fun on the water of just one man, the sole founder and owner Antonio Adragna. Driven by his passion for the sea and experience in the nautical and marine sectors the Marine Site brand is a story of passion and quality handed down from father to son, based from their fully serviced shipyard including mooring and storage facilities Marine Site is well equipped and able to support their customers with their combined 68 years of experience, as the company focuses growth in the global market and now successfully into British waters with its partner and sole UK distributor of the brand, Thanes Marine.

It was whilst holidaying in Sicily with his

wife, that Nick Moger, British entrepreneur, successful businessman and avid boater first laid eyes on the Marine Site range, as he sat ashore, he watched as people enjoyed the Mediterranean waters and glorious weather on small open boats, splashing about on the water Nick noticed that many of the boats were the same. Stylish, spacious and practical offering plenty of deck space for the enhanced enjoyment of those on board and sitting well in the water. It was at this point, before even setting foot on board that Nick began to get an urge to find out more, what were these boats that everyone seemed to be enjoying so much. Nick returned from his holiday in Sicily as the UK’s sole distributor of that very brand of boats, bringing to the UK market ‘Thanes Marine.’

With his personal links and an experienced support network there was no question for Nick as to where Thanes Marine would base itself, and where better than the world heritage site set in the renowned cruising area of the stunning Jurassic coastline, Portland marina, Dorset. It’s fair to say that the British Boating Magazine

team needed no encouragement when Nick invited us down to review his boats and take to the water for sea trials in his desire to show us just how good the Thanes Marine boats are.

Meeting with Thanes Marine Head engineer Peter at their modern workshop facility in Portland, we were initially impressed with the spaciousness of the premises. A number of stock boats were in preparation, giving us a great opportunity to look closely at the stylish lines of each craft. The strength in the quality of build including the transom area where outboards were scheduled to be mounted, the robustness and strength of consoles, seating and sun pad areas were all very impressive and well thought out position wise, for a smaller class of day boat these boats certainly weren’t lacking in space! With ample storage lockers for fenders, ropes and safety equipment along with the typical day boating apparel that you might expect to take onboard for a day out on the water with friends or family, still allowing for good, safe manoeuvrability around the boat.

Wow, what a superb little boat! As soon as I stepped foot on to the Marine 16.5 Open, I was completely taken back at just how much boat you get with this model, immediately drawn by its stability in the water, the boat balanced and steady as I manoeuvred around the deck space, the centre console positioned perfectly for me to walk freely around both sides of the boat allowing 360 degree access and ease of operation, especially well thought out for handling fenders and ropes when coming alongside and tying off lines. With great seating and lounging areas offering a comfortable escape for guests to stay safely out of the way.

A deep and strong sided double skinned hull offering added security that really gave an ‘inside’ of the boat feeling. When often smaller day boats give an ‘on’ the boat feeling, the Thanes 16.5 Open really does offer a feeling of a much bigger boat, in doing so creating a confidence giving feeling of safety. That safe feeling didn’t stop there, with non-slip decks throughout and well positioned stainless bow rails delivering not only ample grab points but a touch of elegance and class as well. Coupled with a stylish, simple yet effective helm of instrumentation and controls with plentiful space for the addition of navigational aids, fish finders and VHF, a stainless frame supported and tinted spray screen

offering protection from spray, wind and low light from the sun made driving the Thanes Marine 16.5 Open an absolute joy. Perfectly complimented by the Tohatsu 50 HP outboard engine, this boat gave me a feeling that can only be expressed by the smile it put on my face. Light and effortless steering made cornering at speed an exhilarating ride, as the hull cut its way through the water, I was able to adjust the boats ride experience at the press of a button with the electric trim offered from the engine controls allowing me to position the bow perfectly to accommodate my speed and changing sea conditions. The soft, stylish waterproof and durable upholstery was both comfortable and easy to wash down after a day on the water! For me this really is the little boat that just keeps on giving, making it the perfect affordable family fun boat, a great first boat for anyone wanting to explore the beautiful British coastline!

With multiple add-ons and engine options for the Thanes 16.5 Open really can do as much or as little as you are looking to do, giving you and your guests confidence and one hell of day at sea!

The Thanes 16.5 Open is a slightly larger choice for anyone new to the world of pleasure boating.

Elegant and compact, our 16.5 Open sports a surprisingly spacious sundeck at the bow and sofa with locker under at the stern. She’s perfectly designed for you to navigate the water in safety and comfort, and, with the option of engines ranging from 20hp to 60hp.

tepping out of the Thanes 16.5 Open and straight into her larger sister the Thanes 19 XL Open is everything you might expect it to be and more! The same great handling and manoeuvrability on the water, the same robust build quality complimented by the comfortable soft finishings of stylish padded and waterproof seating and sun pad areas. It’s the same, just bigger and fitted with the Tohatsu 75 HP outboard, she comes with a growl!

Instantly as you board you have notably more space, stretching the whole length and width of the boat, I could really picture heading out loaded up with the cool box and a picnic with a group of friends to drop anchor and spend hours afloat under a warm summers sun. Equally, with a tackle box full of lures, rods and lines the Thanes 19 XL would make for a great day

fishing boat, with the bigger Tohatsu 75 HP outboard easily pushing you offshore to fish over the many wrecks notorious for attracting sea anglers along our coastline, or for the water sports enthusiast seeking endless fun with Ringo’s, wakeboards or water skis, then this is the boat your looking for. The raised, bolstered helm seat allows you to anchor in behind the heightened spray screen giving you phenomenal 360-degree vision and offering a really natural and comfortable helm position, the mounted engine controls perfectly situated to maintain a steady and relaxed contact at all times, again really focusing on the continued safety conscious efforts as demonstrated in the smaller Thanes 16.5 Open.

A gentle ease on the throttle and the Thanes 19 XL Open takes no time to pick up and part the water, sitting firmly she offers a great all round experience for everyone onboard, I would however recommend to throttle back as you make

any hard turns as the 75 hp outboard did tend to bight back at you, this is a boat you need to really drive when fitted with the bigger engine option, but would I go smaller? No. The 19 XL gave a feeling of further, faster, longer and I have to say I loved it! The fuel economy was great too!

Her sleek lines and contemporary design add to the impression of being on a much larger vessel and, with the option of larger outboard engines for me the Thanes 19.5 XL Open is a one boat does all solution, whatever you’re seeking from your boating adventure, there is little to nothing that this boat isn’t suited for.

The Thanes 19 XL Open is a more spacious versatile boat, at home on lakes, rivers and open waters. Her sleek lines and contemporary design add to the impression of being in a much larger vessel and, with the option of engines ranging from 20hp to 75hp.

If you are in the market for an open day boat, then no search would be complete without talking to the team at Thanes Marine first and based on my experience I would strongly recommend getting in

touch with them to arrange a visit to their Portland, Dorset site where they will happily talk you through any of their range and help you spec the right boat for you. Thanes Marine offer a number of different models to the two boats that we tested during our visit, including the Thanes Marine 19 Open, the Thanes Marine 14 Open, the Thanes Marine 14 Tiller, the Thanes Marine 5.8 Standard Rib and the Thanes Marine 5.8 Open Rib all available to be fitted with either a Mercury or a Tohatsu outboard engine. Thanes Marine carry a good amount of stock here in the UK and delivery times can often be arranged in just days meaning you can get out on the water and start enjoying the freedom of a Thanes Marine boat this season!

Portishead Marina’s mascot is the Curlew, a very large, tall wading bird now regarded as the most pressing bird conservation priority in the UK, which holds a quarter of the world’s population. Identified by their mottled brown and grey feathers

and long, blueish legs, you may be able to spot a Curlew around Portbury Wharf Salt Marsh right on the Marina’s doorstep, as it provides an important foraging site, especially in winter because it doesn’t freeze over.

Embarking on any voyage by motorboat or RIB can be an exhilarating and rewarding experience, but it also requires careful planning and preparation to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. Whether you're crossing the Channel or venturing further afield, proper training and adherence to safe boating principles are essential for a successful passage.

PROFESSIONAL TRAININGTHE FOUNDATION OF SAFE SEAMANSHIP

Professional training lays the groundwork for safe and confident navigation for all voyages. Training opportunities such as the RYA Coastal Skipper Course and RYA Day Skipper Course will provide a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for planning and executing a successful charter.

In the RYA Day Skipper Motor course, participants gain a solid foundation in navigation, seamanship, and boat handling, learning how to interpret charts, build routes, and handle a vessel safely in various conditions. Building upon this groundwork, the RYA Coastal Skipper Motor course delves deeper into advanced navigation techniques, passage planning, and decision-making in challenging coastal environments. Participants acquire the skills needed to assess the weather, interlope tidal currents, and navigate complex harbours and channels, all of which are crucial elements for navigating any waters.

For more experienced boaters or for those seeking deeper knowledge, the RYA MCA Yachtmaster Coastal prep week offers intensive practical training followed by an RYA MCA exam, allowing participants to demonstrate their proficiency in all aspects of motor cruising, from boat handling to skippering responsibilities. Moreover, if you plan to navigate by RIB, the RYA Advanced Powerboat Course provides specialised instruction tailored to planning speed craft, equipping participants with advanced techniques and manoeuvres essential for safe and efficient navigation by day and nighttime.

APEM PRINCIPLE - THE BACKBONE OF PASSAGE PLANNING

APEM (Appraisal, Planning, Execution, and Monitoring) is a framework for planning a berth-to-berth risk management document. Before setting out, boaters must carefully appraise the proposed passage, assess potential risks, and gather all the data for the planning stage. Planning the fine detail of the passage includes determining waypoints, considering fuel requirements, and accounting for tidal currents among other requirements to optimise the passage and assess the route prior to departure.

One of the most important parts of the APEM framework is the final principle –monitoring. This should be treated as a working organic risk assessment, keeping an eye on your passage and double check you are where you think you should be.

Being familiar with all of your navigation equipment is a key part. With the rapid changes in technology in the boating industry over the last 50 years, kit which worked one way 20 years ago, may not work the same way today. Advancements in GPS technology, electronic chart plotters, radar technology, sonar, and the overall integration and connectivity of this digital kit gives boaters an expansive amount of data. This volume of stats, equipment, and data output can be overwhelming, which is why continuous learning and periodic professional training are so important.

Knowing your equipment, arming yourself with strong practical skills and theoretical knowledge, being confident in your competence on the water, and knowing how to adapt to any situation, are four key principles which every boater should follow. By adhering to the APEM principle, boaters can mitigate risks and navigate with precision and foresight.

PASSAGE PLANNING ESSENTIALS

Passage planning is a multifaceted process essential for safe and successful navigation on any voyage, particularly when undertaking long-distance passages in a motorboat or RIB. At its core, passage planning involves meticulous planning of the intended route, taking into account various factors such as weather conditions, navigational hazards, vessel traffic, and tidal currents.

Beginning with a thorough assessment of the current and forecasted weather

conditions, boaters can make informed decisions about the timing and suitability of their voyage, ensuring they embark on their journey under favourable circumstances.

Next, careful consideration of navigational hazards such as rocks, shoals, and shipping lanes is paramount, as it helps boaters identify potential dangers along their route and plan alternative courses if necessary. Placing waypoints at strategic intervals along the planned route serves as a navigational aid, providing reference points for tracking progress and verifying position accuracy using GPS, RADAR, and soundings.

flood of tides allows boaters to optimise their passage, taking advantage of favourable currents to conserve fuel and minimise travel time. By incorporating these essential elements into their passage planning process, boaters can navigate all navigable waters with confidence and assurance, ensuring a safe and enjoyable voyage for all aboard.

Additionally, fuel planning is a critical aspect of passage planning, ensuring that boaters have adequate reserves to complete the journey safely and efficiently. By calculating fuel consumption based on estimated distance, cruising speed, and anticipated sea conditions, boaters can determine the optimal refuelling points and make contingency plans in case of unexpected delays or diversions.

Finally, accounting for tidal currents is essential, particularly when navigating coastal waters or traversing narrow channels. Understanding the ebb and

RYA’s range of motor cruising courses all cover these practices in depth, providing boaters with the competence and confidence to embark on an international voyage.

IMPORTANCE OF VHF RADIO

Competent use of a VHF (Very High Frequency) radio is essential for boaters planning an international voyage for several critical reasons.

Firstly, effective communication is paramount for safety and coordination, particularly in waters with diverse vessel traffic and potential language barriers.

In the event of an emergency, such as adverse weather conditions or mechanical failures, the ability to transmit distress calls and communicate with nearby vessels or maritime authorities can be life saving. A VHF radio allows boaters to request assistance, relay important information, and coordinate rescue operations swiftly and efficiently.

VHF radios are integral for obtaining essential navigational information, including weather forecasts, navigational warnings, and harbour instructions. By staying informed about changing conditions and hazards, boaters can make informed decisions and adjust their plans accordingly to ensure safe passage.

Furthermore, operating a VHF radio in compliance with legal regulations and protocols is essential for navigating international waters. Boaters must understand licensing requirements, call sign procedures, and channel usage restrictions to avoid fines, penalties, or legal consequences for non-compliance.

Overall, competent use of a VHF radio is indispensable for boaters embarking on international voyages, providing them with the means to communicate effectively, navigate safely, and respond to emergencies with confidence while at sea.

The RYA VHF Radio Course equips boaters with essential communication skills for maritime operations, ensuring clear and

effective communication with other vessels and shore authorities. This is an essential training course for boaters planning a longer passage.

FINDING THE BEST TRAINING PROVIDER

With so many training providers in operation, it can be challenging to choose the best one to prepare you for your international voyage. Whether this is your first trip into international waters, or you are looking for a course to consolidate your existing knowledge, it is important to find a reputable operator who can provide the most relevant course to meet your needs, taught by experienced professionals.

One of the best ways to spot a trusted training provider is to find a training centre which is recognised by industry leading boating organisations such as the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). RYA certifications are recognised and respected all over the world and their courses are accompanied by high-quality learning materials. By choosing an RYA recognised training centre, you can have peace of mind that the instructors are appropriately qualified.

Working alongside instructors who have in-depth knowledge of international charter makes it so much easier to learn new

skills. When looking for the right training centre, don’t be afraid to ask specific questions about how their training will help you meet your short- and longer-term goals. A good instructor will know exactly which courses will best meet your needs and will be able to recommend the best pathway to success.

The most iconic river in the UK and, arguably, the world, the River Thames is one of the most significant elements of Great Britain’s heritage. Underpinning the country through many historical milestones and cultural changes in transportation, agriculture, industry, recreation, this impressive river remains a vital landmark of the country and city of London we know today.

HISTORIC HEARTLAND

Trade and communities flourishing along the Thames since the Romans built the settlement of Londinium in 50AD, has meant that a huge area around the river is deeply rich in history and each town and village along the Thames has its own unique character and story from years gone by. Some of the most historical are Windsor, Henleyon-Thames, Marlow and the market town of Wallingford, and are all worth an exploration. But even outside of the obvious locations, there are countless churches, stately homes and monuments standing proudly, ready to be adored by passersby.

AMAZING ACTIVITIES & UNIQUE

LANDMARKS

London is made up of a myriad of eminent landmarks that are simply breathtaking to witness for visitors and residents alike. Given the historical background and original purpose of many of the sights, a

significant number of them adorn the bankside of the Thames, leaving boaters with the luxury of such spectacular views from the comfort of their boat. These waterside attractions include:

remembered visions of the Thames meandering solely through London, a huge part of the river runs through some of the prettiest towns and villages in the Home Counties, and for the most part, the immediate riverside remains untouched.

The Thames Path, a National Trail, follows its entire length and is the only river in Europe to do so, meaning the river and waterside nature can be enjoyed by anyone. Home to over 25 species of coarse fish and boasting an impressive three areas of outstanding natural beauty, the opportunity to experience rural nature and wildlife adorns the riverbanks, ready to be explored. Each with its own history and personality, the 45 locks on the River Thames hold their own individual stories of yesteryear, with the oldest dating back to 1624!

Boat Cleaning WHERE DO YOU START?

Proper boat cleaning is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, regular cleaning helps prevent the buildup of dirt, grime, and other contaminants on your boat’s surface. Over time, these contaminants can cause damage to the boat’s hull and other components, leading to costly repairs. Additionally, regular cleaning can help maintain the boat’s appearance, keeping it looking shiny and new for years to come.

Moreover, cleaning your boat regularly can also help improve its performance. A clean hull reduces drag in the water, allowing the boat to glide more smoothly and efficiently. This, in turn, can help reduce fuel consumption and increase the boat’s overall speed and manoeuvrability. Overall, proper boat cleaning is essential for preserving the longevity, appearance, and performance of your motorboat.

GETTING STARTED WITH BOAT CLEANING

Now that we understand the importance of boat cleaning let’s discuss how to get started. Here are some simple steps to help you keep your motorboat clean and well-maintained:

• Gather Your Supplies: Before you begin cleaning your boat, make sure you have all the necessary supplies on hand. This may include boat soap, a soft brush or sponge, a hose, and a bucket of water. Additionally, you may need specific cleaners for things like metal, vinyl, wood or canvas surfaces.

• Rinse the Boat: Start by rinsing the boat with fresh water to remove any loose dirt or debris. This will make the cleaning process easier and prevent scratches or damage to the boat’s surface.

• Wash the Hull: Use a mild boat soap and a soft brush or sponge to gently scrub the hull of the boat. Work in small sections, starting from the top and working your way down. Be sure to rinse the area thoroughly after cleaning to remove any soap residue.

• Clean the Interior: Don’t forget to clean the interior of your boat as well. Vacuum or sweep the floors, wipe down surfaces with a damp cloth, and clean any upholstery or carpets as needed. Pay special attention to areas that tend to accumulate dirt, such as storage compartments or under seats.

• Protective Measures: After cleaning, consider applying a wax or protective ceramic coating to the boat’s hull. This will help maintain the boat’s shine, protect it from UV rays, and make future cleanings easier.

MAINTENANCE

• Regular Maintenance: To keep your boat looking its best, make boat cleaning a regular part of your maintenance routine. Schedule cleanings as needed, depending on how often you use the boat and the conditions it’s exposed to.

By following these simple steps and making boat cleaning a regular habit, you can ensure that your boat stays in top condition and ready for your next adventure on the water.

MARINE CERAMIC COATING –WHY HAVE YOUR BOAT CERAMIC COATED?

When it comes to protecting your boat from the harsh elements of the sea, marine ceramic coating is a game-changer. Not only does it provide a protective barrier against saltwater, UV rays, and other environmental factors, but it also enhances the overall appearance of your vessel.

WHY CHOOSE MARINE CERAMIC COATING?

• Unparalleled Protection Against the Elements: Ceramic coatings act as a robust shield, providing unmatched protection against the relentless onslaught of environmental elements. From the sun’s harmful UV rays to corrosive saltwater, the ceramic layer forms a barrier that prevents oxidation, fading, and deterioration of the boat’s surfaces

• Enhanced Aesthetics: Not only does ceramic coating protect your boat, but it also enhances its appearance. The glossy finish that ceramic coating provides gives your boat a sleek and polished look that prevents colour fading and adds depth to the paint or gel coat.

• Easy Maintenance with hydrophobic benefits: Ceramic coatings make cleaning your boat a breeze. The hydrophobic properties of ceramic coatings repel water and dirt, making it easier to keep your boat looking pristine Cleaning becomes a breeze, as dirt, salt, and other pollutants struggle to adhere to the slick surface.

• Cost-Effective: While the initial cost of ceramic coating may be higher than traditional waxing or polishing, the long-term benefits far outweigh the investment. With its long-lasting protection, you’ll save money on maintenance and upkeep in the long run.

• Environmentally Friendly: Ceramic coatings are environmentally friendly, as they do not contain harmful chemicals that can pollute the waterways. By choosing ceramic coating for your boat, you are not only protecting your vessel but also the environment.

HOW DOES MARINE CERAMIC COATING WORK?

Ceramic coatings contain nanotechnology that creates a molecular bond with the surface of your boat. This bond makes the surface hydrophobic, meaning that water beads up and rolls off, taking dirt and contaminants with it. This self-cleaning effect makes maintenance a breeze and ensures that your boat stays looking its best for years to come.

IS MARINE CERAMIC COATING WORTH THE INVESTMENT?

Absolutely. While the initial cost may seem high, the long-term benefits of marine ceramic coating far outweigh the investment. Not only does it provide superior protection for your boat, but it also enhances its appearance and makes maintenance easier. In the long run, you’ll save time and money on upkeep, making ceramic coating a worthwhile investment for any boat owner.

LOVING YOUR TEAK!

Teak is a beautiful and durable wood commonly used in boat decking, but it requires proper care to maintain its appearance and longevity and needs a slightly different routine than the rest of your cleaning schedule!

WHY IS TEAK CLEANING IMPORTANT?

Cleaning the teak on your boat is vital for several reasons. First and foremost, regular maintenance helps to preserve the wood’s natural oils and prevent it from drying out and cracking. Additionally, keeping your teak deck clean can prevent the growth of mold, mildew, and algae, which can cause discoloration and damage to the wood over time. By incorporating teak cleaning into your regular boat maintenance routine, you can extend the lifespan of your deck and keep it looking its best.

HOW TO CLEAN TEAK: STEP BY STEP GUIDE

What do you need?: Before you begin cleaning your teak deck, make sure you have all the necessary supplies on hand. This includes a soft-bristled brush, a mild teak cleaner or a mixture of water and dish soap, and a bucket of clean water.

Rinse the Deck: Start by rinsing the teak deck with clean water to remove any loose dirt, debris, or salt residue. This will help to prepare the wood for cleaning and ensure that your teak cleaner can penetrate more effectively.

Apply the Cleaner: Mix your chosen teak cleaner with water according to the manufacturer’s instructions, or create a solution of water and dish soap. Use a softbristled brush to apply the cleaner to the teak deck, working in the direction of the wood grain.

Scrub Gently: Using the soft-bristled brush, gently scrub the teak deck to remove dirt, stains, and buildup. Avoid using harsh scrubbing pads or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the wood’s surface. Take care to scrub in the direction of the wood grain to prevent any damage.

Rinse Thoroughly: Once you have finished scrubbing the teak deck, rinse it thoroughly with clean water to remove any remaining cleaner or residue. Make sure to rinse the deck well and check for any areas that may need extra attention.

Allow to Dry: After rinsing, allow the teak deck to dry completely before applying any sealant or protective coating. This will help to prevent moisture from getting trapped in the wood and causing damage.

MAINTAINING TEAK: TIPS AND TRICKS

D Regularly clean your teak deck to prevent dirt, mould, and algae buildup.

D Avoid using harsh cleaners, bleach, or abrasive materials on your teak deck.

D Apply teak oil or sealant every few months to help protect the wood and maintain its natural beauty.

D Consider using a teak brightener to restore the wood’s natural colour and luster.

NAVIGATING BOAT INSURANCE

Whether you are new to boating or a seasoned boater, navigating the world of insurance can be daunting. Ensuring your boat is adequately insured is paramount to safeguarding your investment and enjoying worry-free adventures on the water.

Boating comes with inherent risks, from collisions to weather-related damage. Without insurance, you could be left facing significant financial burdens if something goes wrong. Boat insurance provides cover for damage to your own boat, liability protection in case you cause damage to

third-party property or injure someone, and additional optional benefits such as cover for personal accident and legal costs.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR COVER NEEDS

Before diving into insurance options, assess your usage and needs for the boat. Different activities, such as chartering, racing, single-handed sailing or ocean passages may require specific cover considerations. Communicating your boat’s intended use to insurers enables tailored cover that aligns with your requirements.

Consider factors such as the size and type of your boat, where and how often you plan to use it, and any additional equipment or accessories on board. Understanding your usage patterns and potential risks, help determine the level of cover needed to adequately protect your investment. It is important to remember that a boat is exposed to many risks even when it is ashore or never leaves the marina.

HULL COVER: PROTECTING YOUR BOAT

Hull insurance offers cover for damage

to your boat’s hull, rig, machinery, and equipment, ensuring comprehensive protection.

However, not all Hull Insurance policies are created equal. Understanding policy exclusions is imperative, as they determine the extent of cover. Insurance is designed to safeguard against the unexpected, so exclusions typically involve factors that can be anticipated or prevented, such as wear and tear or lack of maintenance. It is important to carefully examine the policy wording to ascertain whether damage resulting from wear and tear, or corrosion, or lack of maintenance or another hidden fault (latent defect) is excluded. Consider the consequences of such exclusions.

Some policies may cover damage directly resulting from wear and tear, excluding only the failed part from the settlement. While these policies may be more expensive, the peace of mind they provide is invaluable.

To understand your policy further check whether it is on an All Risks or Insured Perils basis. With an All Risks policy, your boat is covered for almost everything, except for the specific exclusions detailed in the policy. Essentially, unless an exclusion applies, you are covered. On the other hand, an Insured Perils policy provides cover only for the perils specifically stated as being covered under the policy.

Questions to consider when selecting Hull cover include the extent of cover for engines and machinery, limitations on vessel speed, and cover for personal effects and trailers. In addition, do insurers require a survey, and at what intervals will future surveys be necessary?

THIRD PARTY LIABILITY: MITIGATING LEGAL LIABILITIES

While not every boat owner may require a comprehensive range of insurance products, we strongly recommend securing at least Third Party Liability insurance. Compensating a third party for injuries or paying legally awarded damages can become costly, making liability insurance a vital safeguard. Without adequate third party liability cover, the financial burden of repair costs for third party damage or legal liabilities can escalate rapidly. By securing this type of insurance, boat owners mitigate the risk of substantial financial loss and protect their assets against potential claims arising from accidents on the water.

Most marinas mandate third-party liability insurance, underscoring its importance for boat owners. Third Party Liability insurance is therefore a crucial layer of protection against potential costs, offering peace of mind while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

PERSONAL ACCIDENT INSURANCE: PROTECTING YOU AND YOUR CREW

Personal accident insurance provides compensation for permanent disability or death resulting from boating accidents. Whether you sail solo or with a crew, having personal accident insurance ensures you and your loved ones are financially protected in the event of a tragic accident.

Some policies offer additional benefits, such as emergency medical expenses and cover ashore. Understanding cover limits and whether it is included within a comprehensive policy or offered separately is essential for informed decision-making.

NEW FOR OLD: UNDERSTANDING REPLACEMENT COSTS

Insurers are expected to return your vessel to its pre incident condition as closely as possible, not improve it. If the insurers pay the full cost of a brand new part to replace an aged and partially worn item, then the policyholder has profited from the loss and has achieved betterment.

To maintain the core insurance principle of indemnity and to avoid betterment, insurers may therefore deduct an amount from the cost of replacing a used item with a brand new one (commonly referred to as a New for Old deduction).

Understanding what deductions apply, on what basis (age of the boat or equipment) and if they include labour costs, ensures transparency and avoids surprises during claims. It is always worth enquiring whether it is possible to opt out of New for Old deductions if your boat is likely to attract them.

Conversely, New for Old cover is when insurers will meet the full cost to replace an old part with a new one, without such deductions.

New for old cover is a valuable feature that ensures you receive adequate compensation for damage or losses to your boat and equipment. By understanding how replacement costs are calculated, you can assess the true value of your cover and make informed decisions about your insurance needs.

EXCESS/DEDUCTIBLE: YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO CLAIMS

Excess, or deductible, refers to the amount you must pay in a claim. Policies vary, with some applying it to all claims except total loss. Understanding when the excess applies and its impact on claims helps assess overall policy costs and benefits.

Excess amounts can significantly affect the cost of insurance and your out-of-pocket expenses in the event of a claim. By comparing excess levels across different policies, you can choose the option that best aligns with your budget and risk tolerance.

SERVICE, CLAIMS, OTHER COSTS: EVALUATING PROVIDER SUPPORT

Consider the level of customer service offered by insurance providers, particularly in claims management and support. Access to knowledgeable support, availability of 24/7 assistance, and clarity on associated costs, such as documentation or cancellation fees, are essential considerations for a positive insurance experience.

You only truly test insurance when you make a claim. Boating emergencies can happen at any time, so having access to prompt and reliable support is crucial for resolving issues quickly and efficiently. Evaluate insurance providers based on their track record for claims handling and customer satisfaction to ensure peace of mind during emergencies.

PREMIUMS: UNDERSTANDING COST FACTORS

Premiums are determined by risk factors and the probable cost of settling claims. Insurers assess factors such as owner experience, boat type and age, usage, and sailing location. Understanding how premiums are calculated and assessing if the cover aligns with your needs ensures fair and equitable insurance costs.

Premiums need to cover the insurers’ administration costs, any commissions they pay to intermediaries, and the claims of the small percentage who will suffer an accident.

Insurers will assess what they believe to be the degree of risk each policy brings to the overall portfolio of business. Therefore, they will assess the experience of the owner or skipper, the type and age of the boat, the use to which it will be put, and the location in which it will be sailing and wintering.

Why is location a risk? Well, there are many reasons. A boat kept in a marina is subject to different risks than a boat for example kept on a tidal estuary mooring. With people sailing further afield, insurers must consider the risks posed by pirates, as well as geographical features such as reefs and storm patterns. Another factor is the cost to insurers of handling claims and the cost of actual repairs in locations that are further away from home territory – sometimes involving repair facilities whose expertise is an unknown quantity, and sometimes having to arrange to move the boat to another location for repair. If the boat can be repaired locally, the claim may include the cost of transporting, for example, a replacement mast from the supplier to some far-flung island.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PROVIDER: ENSURING COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE

Selecting an insurance provider with a strong claims reputation and comprehensive cover is vital to ensuring peace of mind on the water. When comparing insurance options, consider the breadth of cover offered, the provider’s claims handling reputation, and the overall value provided.

A reputable insurance provider should offer comprehensive cover tailored to your specific needs, backed by responsive customer service and efficient claims processing. Look for providers with a proven track record of reliability and customer satisfaction, as evidenced by testimonials and reviews from other boat owners.

Additionally, consider the financial stability and reputation of the insurance company. A financially sound insurer with a strong industry reputation is more likely to fulfil its obligations and provide timely support in

In summary, boat insurance is a critical component of responsible boat ownership, offering protection against unforeseen risks and liabilities. By understanding your cover needs, evaluating policy options, and selecting a reputable insurance provider, you can safeguard your investment and enjoy worry-free adventures on the water.

Remember to regularly review and update your insurance cover to ensure it remains aligned with your evolving needs and circumstances.

As you embark on your boating adventures, take the time to navigate the world of insurance with confidence, knowing that you have the cover and support you need to weather any storm. With the right insurance policy in place, you can set sail with the assurance that your insurance is prepared for whatever the sea may bring.

The 440 Tiller is the Salcombe Flyer entry level ‘NON CONSOLE’ version of our popular Sport hull. This is ideal for both Inland and Coastal Waters and she is perfect for fishing or diving activities where more deck space is required. A good option too for commercial operators or sailing clubs as a lightweight, easily manoeuvrable and very stable safety / rescue craft.

The long shaft transom will take tiller control outboards up to 40hp and a portable 25L fuel tank. There’s also enough room for a battery between the two rear seating pods for running electric start or power trim and tilt engines / accessories and comfortable seating across the main bench and bow seating areas.

We recommend an engine of 30hp to benefit from the hull lift and planing capabilities, or pottering about with an 8hp or even an electric motor for stealth fishing trips on local rivers.

The classic and the most popular of our Salcombe Flyer range is the 440 Sport.

The standard package includes the very fuel efficient Tohatsu 40hp EFi Fourstroke outboard which pulls you out of the water in seconds and really is a true ‘Flyer’. Capable of carrying 5 persons in ultimate luxury (as do all our console orientated boats), plenty of watertight storage and small enough to be towed behind almost all family sized vehicles, she is also small enough to keep on your drive for easy launch and recover.

A truly great boat, excellent sea keeping abilities and very stable which suits all the leisure needs of the family. She comes with all the standard equipment as our other larger boats in the range but with the benefit of a cheaper price tag and more economical running expenses.

The Salcombe Flyer 480 Sport is our mid range sports boat with a seating capacity of 6. The wrap around bench seat and the bow area and console seating with watertight under seat storage is perfect for leisure, dive or spear fishing trips for the whole family or friends.

The sleek, lightweight and stable hull, powered as standard with a power tilt and trim Tohatsu 75hp EFi Fourstroke outboard is equally at home in sheltered Inland waters or more rough Coastal excursions. Safety features include 316 stainless steel hand rails and a boarding ladder for ease of use after a swim or dive.

The Salcombe Flyer 530 Sport is an excellent handling and sea keeping craft. Comfortably seating 7 persons, it is perfectly suited for family days out around the British coastline. Hook up a tow rope on the optional ski pole and take the kids or adults out for a wakeboard or ski session. The lightweight hull, powered by an economical 75hp EFi Fourstoke Tohatsu will take you to a top speed of 35 knots with ease and will happily cruise 30 knots. Perhaps if you are more suited to ultimate performance why not opt for the 115hp outboard, where speeds of 50 knots+ can be obtained, definitely a ‘Flyer’! The 70L fuel tank means you can be out on the water all day without re-fuelling, combined with the watertight bow, under seat and forward console storage facilities you can pack all of your safety equipment and still have plenty of room for your family belongings.
