Welcome

Issue 18 | SUMMER 2018

Summer’s arrival is always greeted with joy – but this year it seems almost miraculous. After weathering a beastly spring that brought us snow, waterlogged fields and a raft of cancelled events, there’s no holding us back now the sun has returned. With the competition season back on track, Mary and Emily King are delighted to be getting back into the swing of it all and already have some very successful runs under their belts. They bring us up to date with their latest news in our regular Keeping Up With The Kings feature on Page 51. For organisers of the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park, summer means the countdown really has begun until doors open at one of the equestrian world’s most prestigious gatherings in August. Ellie Hughes chats to new Event Director Peter Phillips about plans to attract even more people to enjoy a spectacular day out in the glorious Cotswolds on Page 22. Kathy Carter has a round-up of some of the other events and activities we might be enjoying the coming months (Page 40) and looks at what summer shopping trends and products might be tempting us to part with our cash (Page 29)! Do you have a holiday planned? We look at some of the most exciting horse-riding destinations around the globe, from joining nomads on a desert trek to saddling up for thrilling safaris, on Page 8. Exploring somewhere new with your own horse is, of course, priceless and having your own transport opens up a world of possibilities. There is an amazing range of horse lorries and trailers on the market – take a look at our guide on Page 81. We hope you enjoy reading this bright and breezy edition of Your Horse & Country Magazine as much as we have producing it!

SPECIALIST PLANNING ADVICE A Guide to the New Permitted Development Rights for Rural Communities

What are permitted development rights? Permitted Development rights give landowners the opportunity to carry out specific types of work and changes of use to existing buildings without going through the full planning application process. The intention is to provide a “light touch” approach but all is not as simple as it seems! Each permitted development right is subject to a number of conditions including the requirement to submit a prior approval notification to your relevant local planning authority. With the exception

CIRENCESTER 01285 323200

of the right to convert an agricultural building into residential use under Class Q, the remaining permitted development rights have a two-stage process. Firstly, the prior approval process to determine the change of use and as a second stage, a planning application is needed to make material changes to the building’s external appearance. The local planning authority will consider various factors such as the design, siting, transport and highways impacts, contamination, flooding risks and the building materials proposed relating to the specific development.

CRANBROOK 01580 201888

What are the changes? The latest amendment to the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development Order) (GPDO) Order 1995 came into force from the 6th April 2018. Changes to the Class Q PD right allows for greater options when converting existing agricultural buildings into dwellings with the hope of addressing the shortage of rural housing and supporting farm businesses. Conversion of agricultural buildings under Class Q now allows for the following:

extended to allow for a maximum of 1,000 m2, a significant increase from the previous restriction of 465m2 of floor space. The Government also extended the temporary permitted development right for the change of use of storage and distribution buildings into dwellings through Class P of the GPDO for an extra year, until 10th June 2019.

What does this mean for landowners? The changes made by the Housing Minister, Dominic Raab, hope to provide more flexibility to rural development and deliver much needed homes for rural communities.

• Up to 5 smaller homes with a maximum combined floor space of 100m2; or • Up to 3 larger homes with a maximum combined floor space of 465m2; or • A combination of the above not to exceed 5 houses in total and the mix must have no more than 3 larger houses.

The larger maximum floor space of 1,000m2 for new agricultural and forestry buildings will allow landowners to expand their farming business and safeguard against Brexit uncertainties through diversification opportunities.

The relaxed and more flexible Class Q PD right is hopeful news for the ruraleconomy and will allow landowners and farmers to create new housing for local people without the need to undergo the full planning permission process. It is anticipated the changes will help to address the critical need for rural housing, the option for smaller houses will allow people to stay in the area through affordable, farm worker or starter homes. The Rural Planning Practice offer specialist rural planning advise and have offices in Cirencester, Gloucestershire and Cranbrook, Kent. Leading the horsebox industry through innovation not imitation We feel proud that we have been audited and inspected by Renault France and conform to all of their build processes, and they have chosen us as their only recommended UK horsebox partner, and feel blessed to have the backing of all our main base vehicle manufacturers. Dean Moody.

Bloomfields is a family-run business which launched its first horsebox range in 2005, designed and built by founder Dean Moody. From humble beginnings, Dean built his first horseboxes in the stable yard of his parents’ house (called Bloomfield) and has since gone from strength to strength. The company now manufactures horseboxes from a 44,000 sq ft factory and employs 32 of the industry’s most skilled and trained workforce. Being a horse owner from a young age and a trained vehicle body technician, Dean always strives to challenge the status quo of horsebox manufacture. Bloomfields is now a brand recognised worldwide with an outstanding reputation for exceptional build quality but still offering sensible prices. Dean’s theory

is not to spend money on fancy showrooms and expensive advertising, therefore keeping the prices realistic for customers. Always striving to stay ahead with their innovation, Bloomfields has a dedicated research and development department who work tirelessly to create new, innovative features and test new materials to be sure that all Bloomfields horseboxes are as strong and safe as can be, while keeping up with new technologies. Bloomfields’ in-house quality assurance team inspect every part of the builds as they move along the production line. Each horsebox undergoes a rigorous 160-point quality inspection, making sure no quality is lost through the build section.

BLOOMFIELDS HORSEBOXES

The in-house spray team work with the in-house designers to create the most sensational spray designs, something else which makes Bloomfields stand out from the crowd! Bloomfields has invested heavily in strength testing and approvals. Dean says: “We didn’t feel happy just telling people how strong our horseboxes were, with nothing to back up our claims. We wanted to prove it with certifications and approvals! “Horses are one of the most precious and unpredictable cargo you can carry. We wanted to make sure that our horseboxes are up to this and therefore invested massively into strength testing our bulkhead, and our VCA European Type Approval and VCA Conformity of Production. We are very proud to now be the only UK manufacturer to be accredited and approved by Renault Trucks, Renault and Fiat, with Type approvals with Nissan and Peugeot in the system.” Dean continues: “We feel proud that we have been audited and inspected by Renault France and conform to all of their build processes, and they have chosen us as their only recommended UK horsebox partner, and feel blessed to have the backing of all our main base vehicle manufacturers.” He adds: “Our recent factory purchase has been invaluable to our growth - we have gone from eight to 22 horseboxes in build at any one time and have the capacity to build up to 10 horseboxes a week in the future. This was the only way we could meet the massive demand in the UK and Europe. We are also in the process of starting to export to the US and beyond,

helping to create a happy, friendly and positive working environment. We feel this is another important factor in producing such quality horseboxes, because our staff are genuinely passionate and happy in their jobs.” something we would never have imagined when we started 13 years ago in my parents’ back yard!’ Helen Moody, who runs the sales department, said: “We are a family-run business and put our family values into our work ethic; we treat our customers as we would like to be treated ourselves. For us, after-service is as, if not more, important than sales. If there is an issue, we aim to

Over the past 18 months Bloomfields has taken on a huge amount of agents in the UK and Europe. The company has UK agents in Scotland, Nottingham, Wolverhampton, Wiltshire and Ireland, along with France, Portugal, Germany, Luxembourg, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway and soon the USA and beyond! This means that there is a Bloomfields representative within reach of most potential customers. Bloomfields offers a “try before you buy” service from Scotland, the Midlands and South, giving potential customers the opportunity to see how well their horses travel before making the investment. Along with their VCA European Type Approval, each horsebox is inspected by the FTA and certified to DEFRA standards for the UK and Europe if required.

have it resolved within 24 hours and are proud to have many returning customers, which hopefully means we are doing something right! Dean and I are always on the end of the phone for our customers, which is something we feel is important, albeit with our daughter Eve singing in the background or her puppy Elsa yapping away! We treat our staff as family, too,

In recent years, Bloomfields has massively increased production, now producing four to five horseboxes a week yet still boasting a healthy 10-month waiting list, with approximately 40% of horseboxes being exported to Europe. Bloomfields is endorsed by some of Europe’s top riders, such as Billy Twomey, Geoff Billington, Ben Hobday, Guy Williams and Dirk Demeersman.

ride sprung up visions of the morning sun slowly illuminating the karst topography of the valley filled with limestone forms of what is left after generations of slow erosion. Tourists from all parts of the world come to enjoy Cuba’s beaches and get a feel for the unique history but what is dear to my heart is the rural life and the people in it. My desire to see that part of the country sent me Havana bound for a horse riding vacation in the Pinar del Rio province, the western most area of the island. Sipping mojitos in the lobby bar of the Hotel Presidente outside the city center of Havana my travelling companion Ali and I meet the other riders. We are an eclectic mix from Belgium, France, Spain and Mexico, speaking four languages among us. Ali and I are quickly dubbed “The Canadian Girls”.

My memories of living in Cuba in the mid nineties were not of the 50’s American cars cruising down the Malecon in Havana or the Tropicana dancers strutting their colorful feathers to the salsa rhythm under the stars, the lingering pictures in my mind were of the countryside and the people in it. Oxen powered carts and transportation by horse being part of the survival on the island with little. It had been just over ten years since my last visit when the words “Finally a Horse Back Ride in Cuba” caught my attention on the Unicorn Trails web site. The mention of Valle Viñales on the Tabaquero

Colorful American 1950’s era cars line the front of the hotel waiting to take tourists for a tour of Havana. Wedged between them are the small coco taxis shaped like large yellow helmets. After breakfast by the pool our driver Tony squeezes our our luggage into a van just big enough for the eleven of us and we set out to a ranch from where we will ride to Playa Este, a popular beach on the outskirts of Havana. A three-hour ride through the countryside brings us to the beach where a swim is followed by an amazing seafood lunch. Our driver Tony whisks us out of the city and into the country side where we enjoy a Mojito at the pool bar before dinner at Finca Charcol Azul in Artemesia, a state run farm and facility where a few Belgians imported from Canada are crossed with local criollo

Our next stop, Mil Cumbres, has us riding through the jungle of a 13,000 hectare reservation of flora and fauna with pristine river crossings. People of the village we ride through smile, wave and gesture bon dia, good day. Our horses rest as we lunch in an outdoor restaurant in El Buren then continue our ride back to the farm and on to our next destination, Viñales Ali and I wake up early in the morning and take a short cab ride to watch the warm morning sun slowly reveal the haystack shaped limestone mounds know as Mogotes in the valley of Viñales. The lush green tobacco fields are accented by old tobacco drying houses. We return to the house in time for breakfast and hop in the van to meet our horses. Our ride in the valley takes us past uniquely carved limestone walls and active tobacco plantations to a small farm where honey is processed and served in the purist of lemonade. A lesson on how guarapo is made, a common drink made from squeezing cane stalks, and how coffee is processed precedes lunch. The afternoon ride takes us to a tobacco farm for a lesson on how tobacco is grown and cigars are made. We arrive back to the van and dismount just seconds before the heavens open. Our final destination, Finca La Guabina is a state run farm just 15km from the city of Pinar del Rio. The old originally Spanish owned farm house provides the restaurant and some of the rooms. overlooks the lake. The steep terrain we climb provides stunning views of the 1,000 hectare active cattle farm. Local musicians make the trek from the city to provide the entertainment for the night after dinner. Our last days ride brings us to the lakeside for a gallop amongst the palm trees before saying goodbye to our mounts and heading back into Havana. Reflecting on the week I was happy to know that with the exception of a few new tractors the countryside of Cuba still remains as simple as can be and the enduring people are just as I remembered.

S

ummer brings lengthening days, warmer temperatures and the return of beautiful greenery to enjoy on countryside walks. There’s so much to look forward to at this time of year and every rider wants their horse to be in the best condition possible so they can enjoy it with them. As every horse owner knows, the same problems rear their heads every year – bug season and sweet itch! The bites of midges, flies, ticks, mosquitoes and other pesky parasites can irritate our horses, which can lead them to damage their own skin as they attempt to get to that itch. Many of us are reluctant to turn to harsh chemicals – which is why WildWash has harnessed the power of botanicals to send bugs fleeing and soothe irritated skin. The award-winning WildWash Pro Flea and Bug Repellent was created after a year of development, during which WildWash sourced natural and ethical ingredients from around the world, selected as the most effective insectrepelling botanicals in their country of origin. The results are brilliant. The careful, caring combination of horsetail, eucalyptus and nettle can be applied freely and liberally and is suitable for use on both horses and dogs. It even helps to condition and brighten the coat for a glossy shine – bonus! To help the healing process, our Medicated Shampoo for Irritated Skin uses a combination of juniper, manuka and lemongrass to help reduce the pain and swelling of bites, heal and protect the skin against infection, relieve muscle pain and maintain the balance of moisture to the skin to help prevent dry patches or flaking. Our shampoos are easy to use and quick to rinse out, leaving the skin and coat in great condition. They are costeffective due to being very concentrated, and can be diluted.

Our ponies often have very small ticks on their faces and bodies, especially in the spring due to the fact that wild deer can be seen sharing their fields.... I tried it on three young ponies out of five in the same field. Used daily for two weeks, there appeared to be a noticeable difference between the two groups, as I scarcely found any ticks on the trial group. Flea and Bug Repellent review from Equine Magazine – Gillian McMurray

We couldn’t get over the difference in his coat, he was gleaming and he walked back to his box with a real bounce in his stride! Now when anything comes into the yard that looks a bit itchy and dull, the first thing we do is give it a WildWash! No gimmick… it really does what it says on the bottle… ‘Cleans, soothes, heals and protects irritated skin.’ Medicated Horse Shampoo review from Equine Magazine – Caroline Powell

A balanced diet made simple Telissa Blowers, equine nutritionist at Allen & Page Quality Horse Feed, looks at how to ensure even the trickiest diets have enough fibre to keep your horse healthy

T

hose horses who suffer from, or are prone to, laminitis will require careful day-to-day management with a diet high in fibre, low in starch and low in sugar – research has suggested that a laminitic should be provided with a feed containing a combined starch and sugar level of below 10%. This makes our Fast Fibre and Veteran Light ideal choices. Fast Fibre contains a combined starch and sugar level of 7.5%, which falls well below the 10% guideline, as does Veteran Light with a level of 8.5%. With these feeds part of our very popular Barley & Molasses Free Range, we can also ensure that they are free from whole cereal grains and alfalfa but will provide your horse with a balanced diet inclusive of all essential vitamins and minerals (when fed at recommended amounts based on body weight and workload). Fast Fibre has a fibre level of 26%, it can also be used as a forage top-up for those with worn or missing teeth who can no longer manage long forage (hay/ haylage). Fibre, apart from water, is the most important part to a horse’s diet as it will fuel an internal heating system through hind gut fermentation, helping to maintain good condition and prevent weight loss. Those not eating enough fibre will be at a greater risk of developing serious problems such as colic and gastric ulcers. Veteran Light is also a feed high in fibre with a level of 24% – fibre and good quality

oil sources like those found in Fast Fibre and Veteran Light will provide the horse with slow-release, stamina-type energy to fuel work and maintain condition. While we cannot feed for muscle gain as this can only come from consistent, correct work, Veteran Light will contain an elevated level of protein (10.5%) – ideal for the older horses in lighter work or those experiencing muscle loss. It is very common for those suffering from laminitis, Cushing’s disease (PPID) or Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) to go through an appetite change. Both Fast Fibre and Veteran Light do not contain any artificial flavours, aromas or preservatives. With a range of natural herbs (mint, fenugreek, cloves and garlic to name a few) added for a natural flavour and their well-known properties, Veteran Light is highly palatable and can tempt even the fussiest feeders to tuck in.

Contact the award-winning Allen & Page Nutritional Helpline

Fast Fibre and Veteran Light are quick and easy to prepare, soaking in 30-60 seconds so owners can ensure their horse’s feed is always fresh! Some horses can be reluctant to drink enough water – this can be a very common in older horses so providing a soaked feed will increase water intake, aiding hydration and a healthy digestive system. Fast Fibre also contains fructooliosaccharides (FOS) and mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) prebiotics – Veteran Light contains these as well as a probiotic to promote a healthy digestive system. Linseed is included in the recipes for both feeds as a source of omega 3 fatty acids for all-round health and coat condition.  For further information on our products, contact our friendly, helpful nutrition team on 01362 822902 or helpline@allenandpage.co.uk.

Going for

glory

There have been changes afoot at Gatcombe Park, home to the Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing, with a new leader, a new title sponsor and a new championship. Ellie Hughes catches up with incoming Event Director Peter Phillips and discovers what this year’s event has in store for visitors.

W

here better to call your workplace than Gatcombe Park, where the rolling Cotswolds hills are your view and birdsong is the soundtrack to your day. It is no wonder that Peter Phillips talks with such enthusiasm about his new role as Event Director at the Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing. He really has come back home. Taking on this mantle clearly means a huge amount to Captain Mark Phillips and HRH The Princess Royal’s son, who grew up with the event on his doorstep after it was started by his parents in 1984. “For as long as I can remember the horse trials has been a focal point in the diary for my family,” muses Peter, as we

talk on the phone one morning in midApril. The Festival, which this year takes place from August 3-5, is the undisputed highlight of the British eventing calendar and home to five national championships. The cross-country courses, designed by Captain Mark Phillips, are the ultimate test of horse and rider. This is where the sport’s stars throw caution to the wind, hit the throttle and go for glory. Last October it was announced that Tim Henson was to step down from his role as Event Director after 21 years at the helm. “Taking over was a natural progression; it wasn’t something that suddenly sprung up,” says Peter. “I have always been involved in various different guises – when I was a lot younger, I probably caused more trouble than I did help – but over the last few years I have moved from helping out with the manual labour to becoming more involved in the managerial side, working alongside Tim, my father and the rest of the committee.” Peter is also now head of Sports Entertainment Limited, a London-based agency specialising in event delivery, sponsorship and consultancy. But he is quick to point out that he is not about to – and there is no need to – make radical changes to an extremely popular formula. “Tim has done an amazing job and this is not about revolutionary change, it is about evolution,” he continues. “Tim has put in place such a great platform that I

22  |  SUMMER 2018   Your Horse & Country Magazine

see my role not as changing The Festival, but growing it and taking it to next level.” One of the biggest coups so far has been securing a new title sponsor – something The Festival has been without for the past few years. “It is fantastic that Magic Millions [the Australian thoroughbred auction house] have come on board,” he enthuses. “Their involvement is not only a great boost for The Festival, but for the wider sport as well. Any new money coming into eventing is very good news and hopefully this is the start of a long-term partnership with the Magic Millions team, who will use this as a platform to continue to grow their brand and promote women’s ownership in equestrian sport.” Peter is working alongside Project Director Grace Noest, who also knows The Festival like the back of her hand, having helped in various roles for 20 years. “The feel and buzz is what makes it so special,” she reiterates. “It has a very family-friendly atmosphere and we don’t want to change the feel, we want to enhance it and provide additional facilities and opportunities for people coming in.”

THE FESTIVAL OF BRITISH EVENTING 2018

Extending the family zone and offering a wider variety of food choices, including street food and artisan vendors, are just two areas that Grace and Peter are addressing. “When I was young my friends and I spent more time watching the attractions in the main arena than we ever spent watching the horses compete,” confesses Peter. “My hope is that we can attract more people who are not interested in horses, but want a good day out. It’s a spectacular setting and a fantastic event, and you can enjoy a beautiful part of the Cotswolds that you wouldn’t otherwise have access to.” The Festival – like any other event – could not function without the army of volunteers that help run the show. Looking after those who enable the three full days of competition to happen had always been a priority for Tim Henson, and it is something Peter also feels strongly about. “The sport is very labour intensive and it’s not financially viable to do it with a paid crew, so we rely on people who are passionate about eventing and enjoy volunteering,” he says. “At The Festival we

have always had a ‘work hard, play hard’ culture and people do work very hard for long hours over the course of the week, so it’s only right that at the end of the day we can all get together and have a barbecue and a beer, and relax and switch off. Enjoying the social side is all part and parcel of being involved at The Festival.”

I have always been involved in various different guises – when I was a lot younger, I probably caused more trouble than I did help!

Event Director Peter Phillips So what is Peter’s favourite part of The Festival weekend? “It has probably changed over the years,” he laughs. “I enjoy the Saturday night party that’s put on for the officials, sponsors, owners, riders and volunteers, but I also breathe a big sigh of relief on

Sunday evening when everything’s done and dusted and we’ve had a good event. Seeing the smiles on people’s faces as they leave and hearing the feedback – good and bad – as people are filing out is incredibly rewarding. “In years gone by, I can also remember the point on Sunday at lunchtime when we’d all be sitting up in the dressage field waiting for the last horse to finish its test so we could start clearing up. That was always a good time as it was one of those points of the weekend when everyone got together for a final push. It was also probably the only time I ever watched the dressage!” And his least favourite? “That’s a trickier one. Probably Saturday and Sunday mornings, mainly because there’s a lot to get done before the gates open and it’s always a rush trying to get everything ready before the first horses arrive and members of the public come in. It always involves a very early start, which in my book is never ideal!” One thing’s for sure; when the gates open on the first day of competition at this year’s Festival, competitors, owners, 

New for 2018 The RoR/NTF Retrained Racehorse Event Championship A new and exciting addition to this year’s schedule, this prestigious championship was first staged in 2003 at Barbury, and is open to any grade of former GB raced thoroughbred and has a prize fund of £6,000. Last year, Izzy Taylor and Zippi Jazzman, an American-bred gelding formerly in training with Ralph

fitting for the championship to be held at The Festival, which has always been a true cross-country test. With the likes of Izzy Taylor and Harry Meade having won the RoR/NTF Event Championship crown in previous years, I can guarantee we will be treated to an exciting top-class competition.” Di Arbuthnot, Chief Executive of RoR, adds: “We are thrilled that the class will be part of the Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing. The RoR/NTF Retrained Racehorse Event Championship is one of our longest-running competitions and our thanks go to the National Trainers Federation (NTF) for their continued sponsorship of the series.” The other championships are: l The Topspec Challenge for The Corinthian Cup, launched in 2015. This is a restricted amateur novice championship; a true novice test and in keeping with the grassroots nature riders must not have completed an Intermediate Class in the current or preceding five years, making sure that the competition is as fair as possible. 2017 winners: Lorna Collins and Blackrock Ricardo

p Izzy Taylor Beckett, claimed the first prize of £2,000. Entries are accepted on a first come, first served basis and the class is run under Intermediate Novice rules. Event Director Peter Phillips says: “The Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing is a true showcase of our sport and it seems only right that we include this ever-growing class. It is wonderful to see some of racing’s much-loved stars go on to excel in a second career and it seems

l The Smith & Williamson British Intermediate Championship attracts some of the most experienced and up-and-coming horses from around the country. Horses qualify for the championship throughout the season with successful results at Intermediate level and CCI2*. The Championship class runs over an advanced track, one of the highest levels in eventing. Past champions have included William Fox-Pitt, Oliver Townend,

What does it take to win at The Festival? Gemma Tattersall knows what it takes to win at Gatcombe Park. Her scintillating performance across country last year on Arctic Soul secured her the most prestigious title on the national eventing circuit – The British Eventing Open Championship. Gemma’s win was particularly fitting because The Festival has always been a true test of cross-country skill and she did it by jumping up the order with a round that was streets ahead of the opposition. She was sitting on a full thoroughbred with boundless stamina, who made mincemeat of the challenging terrain and hopped nimbly

from question to question, making it look like the proverbial walk in the park. “You have to go as fast as you possibly can at The Festival, and for that you need a horse that listens, is balanced and doesn’t question you,” she explains. “I had to get my brave pants out and put them firmly on. The course is twisty and turny, and so up and down. Arctic Soul is the best cross-country horse in the world because he is so versatile – any type of track suits him.” Gemma is planning to return to The Festival in August to defend her title.

Sir Mark Todd and Tina Cook to name a few. However, the real excitement of this class is watching the progression of the horses who win. The first winner in 1993 was Andrew Nicholson on Jagermeister II who went on to represent New Zealand at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 and completed Badminton twice. Tamarillo and William Fox-Pitt won the class in 2000. They then represented Great Britain at the Athens Olympics, as well as winning both Badminton and Burghley. 2017 winners: Oliver Townend and Khoi Traveler l The Dodson & Horrell British Novice Championship is contested by combinations who have qualified for and been placed in a Novice Regional Final. The Novice Championship gives amateur riders the opportunity to compete against the stars of the sport on their best up-and-coming horses. It runs over an intermediate track, so provides a good test and stepping stone for rider and horses. Previous winners of the title have gone on to compete at CCI4* level. 2017 winners: Ben Hobday and Shadow Man II l The Magic Millions British Open CIC3* is one of the most prestigious accolades in the sport of Eventing. It was introduced in 1986 and first won by Bruce Davidson on JJ Babu. Since its inception the roll of honour contains all the great names in eventing, including Pippa Funnell, Mary King, William Fox-Pitt, Sir Mark Todd, Andrew Nicholson, Oliver Townend and most recently Gemma Tattersall. The Magic Millions British Open CIC3* runs across two days, with the dressage taking place on Saturday and then show jumping on Sunday morning. On Sunday afternoon the competitors run across country with the top 10 starting in reverse order, keeping the tension and excitement running right until the wire. 2017 winners: Gemma Tattersall and Arctic Soul u

SHOPPING

Savvy

shopping Here trend are five will b s that shopp ing we b e tak e in li by s torm g our ind eve u this year stry ...

1

Buying local

“Hyper-locality” is big news this summer. Products sold based on seasonality and availability creates uniqueness and increased “shopper desire” to get something now, while it is available. Some companies are reportedly even meeting a client in-store, and then delivering items to them the same day. (Currently the nearest that most equestrian stores come to this business model is multiple-weekly deliveries to a designated area, carrying items like feed and bedding; although it is possible that a personal delivery service could be a useful “unique selling point” utilised by more enterprising retailers.) Hyper-locality is a great way to support local, small and medium-sized producers, and farmers’ markets are the obvious example.

2

Matchy matchy

Yes, colour-coordinating saddle cloths, head-collars, bandages, ear bonnets and protective boots for horses and ponies are definitely still popular! Originally all the rage with young people, coordinating your look is now extremely popular with adult horse owners too. If it also makes us feel more confident and happier in our riding, then why not?

3

Feeling fashionable

Summer fashion in 2018 is set to embrace tweed patterns, tassels, sequins and primary colours

within its ranges. But if you aren’t one for changing your look regularly at the whim of fashion trends, why not look to accessories to update your style? Tassled handbags, sparkly evening shoes and bold, statement scarves will definitely help you look the part, with a knowing nod to current trends.

4

Customisation of riding wear

Do you want Ostrich-leathertopped riding boots, a diamante riding hat or a hand-embroidered cantle on your saddle? Many brands are offering this option now, and it is a lovely way to add your own style to items that are predominantly similar in their appearance.

5

Alfresco activities

Despite our chilly spring, the Great British Summer is set to be very nice for us, meaning many of us will be spending lots of time outside. So a big trend for summer 2018 is set to be the sales of garden furniture, barbecues and garden accessories! Outdoor entertaining will see many of us move the entertaining of friends and family outside, with dedicated areas for comfy furniture, fire pits and barbecues. This set-up can easily work for livery yards, offering horse owners the chance to unwind and spend quality time together, perhaps with a drink from the fridge in a comfy chair. 

SHOPPING – Your Horse & Country Magazine SUMMER 2018   |  29

The w we sh ay op

N

one of us can have failed to notice that the WAY we shop has changed. Fortunately, a great many of our “bricks and mortar” countryside and equestrian retail outlets are thriving; shopping in store not only offers the chance to ask an expert, feel a product and look at a range, but also to interact with a human! That friendly face and informal chat can be so beneficial. However, in general, the marketplace is changing, with digital technologies leading the way and offering companies that retail directly online to consumers great benefits. Here are six trends in retail that none of us will miss this summer:

Streamlined services You know how ordering something, even online, can be a bit of a chore? PROMOTION

V-Bandz

V-Bandz uses innovative design to create highly visible garments to improve the safety of both horse and rider on the road. The high-viz horse bib above is designed to catch the attention of oncoming drivers and features a dummy camera lens along with the warning: ‘Safety camera in use’ to give the impression of filming. The horse bib will be coming to the market soon at www.v-bandz.co.uk where the rest of our range is also available to view and purchase.

Well, industry experts predict that autorenewals will increase in the near future, along with one-tap purchases (already very popular using payment services like Paypal, and also utilised by some retailers). This streamlining of the shopping process is set to save us time, and also take out what marketers consider to be the “pain” of shopping for things we know we will need in the future, e.g. regular, repeat purchases. (Today’s in-home digital assistants or “voice control systems” can of course help us place the order!) In the animal-care sector, this model has already started to flourish – a new nutrition company is, for example, offering fresh, home-cooked dog food that’s delivered regularly to pet owners. While some equine supplement manufacturers are already using subscription services over a specified duration, the business model has seemingly not been embraced by the equine feed manufacturers. Although equine nutritional needs change over the course of a year, there is surely still a window of opportunity here, particularly for the auto-purchase of forage-based products?

Chatbot Report found that the “majority of consumers are aware of what a chatbot is (57%), and over a third (35%) want to see more companies using chatbots to answer their questions”. If you’re a retailer, an example of how these devices could work for your store is advising a customer on “Messenger” of their expected delivery date, e.g. if they have an existing order, or contacting a previous customer with news of newly stocked items. Sales can even be made directly within apps and social media platforms, allowing for even easier service!

Augmented reality There are also many opportunities for augmented reality, within retail – for example, some furniture stores are reportedly using AR technology (via phone apps) to show customers how a sofa may look in their room, while glasses manufacturers can show a customer how a frame matches their face. In our sector, this would work well in terms of “matchy matchy” coloured accessories sets for horses, or competition outfits based on our body shape.

Niche stores Chatbots We’ve probably all seen those chatbots that pop up to assist us with an online purchase; they’re very popular, so if you’re a retailer and haven’t delved into this area of customer service, maybe it is worth a try! Ubisend’s 2017

30  |  SUMMER 2018   Your Horse & Country Magazine – SHOPPING

The equestrian trade industry recently reported that physical niche stores could definitely succeed further, in today’s competitive marketplace – for example, a dressage tack shop at a training centre, or a pop-up tack shop selling eventing products at a hunter trials event. It’s a captive market!

SHOPPING

Customisation A further niche that is set to continue to succeed is customisation – from pet tags and dog coats, to picture-mugs, photo-books and customised gifts. If you’re a retailer, a good way to create new lines is to ask customers what they would like – a new dog breed added to a line of greetings cards? Or another breed of horse added to a homeware range, perhaps?

Getting connected Companies “linking together” will undoubtedly continue to grow and, in turn, aid customer shopping service. As an example, a leading flat-pack furniture manufacturer has now linked with local service providers who can assemble the items – and within our industry, a similar business model is emerging, with some equestrian manufacturers already working with influencers and “ambassadors” who can become experts and salespeople for niche products. This could also work well with equine trainers, animal nutritionists and even animal therapists, working with manufacturers and retailers of relevant products, for example. 

WINGS – the shape of the ®

We find out more about the science behind the revolutionary saddle pad Why choose a WING® Saddle Pad over a regular saddle pad? Whether we’re competing or enjoying riding for pleasure, our horses work hard for us and a saddle pad is an essential part of easing discomfort for our horses caused by our saddles. Disappointed by the performance of conventional pads, which failed to prevent her horse developing pain, Helen Ross, inventor of the HRP WING® Saddle Pad, took a new approach, creating a completely new shape of pad with the aim of greatly reducing pressure over the lumbar spine. The benefits were clear to see for anyone who used it but an independent scientific study by Hartpury College revealed the HRP WING® Saddle Pad had made a real breakthrough – removing pressure behind the saddle completely. Hartpury College’s Senior Equestrian Sports Science lecturer Victoria Lewis led a team in comparing the HRP WING® Saddle Pad’s performance to that of a conventional pad in a variety of gaits. Horses were monitored at walk, rising trot and canter, and at all gaits the mean pressure between the HRP WING® Saddle Pad and the horse behind the saddle, over the lumbar spinous processes, was significantly less than with TESTIMONIAL

a conventional square pad. During trot and canter the HRP WING® Saddle Pad resulted in no pressure at all behind the saddle over the lumbar spinous processes. Shortly after the results of the study were revealed, the product won the BETA Innovation Awards 2016 Saddlery and Tack category, an achievement that delighted both Helen and the researchers. Victoria said: “Our study showed that there was significantly less pressure exerted on a horse’s back when standing, walking, trotting and cantering when using the winged design saddle pad compared to a conventional saddle pad. “In fact, the results showed that there was no pressure at all behind the saddle over the lumbar spine during trot and canter using the WING® Saddle Pad. It was fantastic to see the product win such a major award and the study we conducted recognised as important in providing more scientific evidence that this new design can reduce pressure on a horse’s back.”

Who is behind HRP WING® Saddle Pads? Entrepreneur Helen Ross developed the innovative HRP WING® design herself after her own horse developed

discomfort when being ridden. Combining the knowledge gained from a lifelong love for horses and a degree in equine science, Helen established the cause was the saddle pad and the pressure it created and so began her experiments in producing a completely new kind of pad. Two core ideas developed, one Helen called the dual wing design and a second which was a mono version. “The dual wing design functioned because of a cut in the saddle pad at a particular angle and gradient. If I made it too shallow, it didn’t eliminate enough pressure and so was nowhere near as effective. Equally, if I made the angle too big it didn’t work at all,” Helen said. “Trying to find the optimum angle and length of the wings took some time as I boiled the design down to fractions of a degree.” Once Helen had fine-tuned her design, she made some prototypes and asked friends to try them out. They proved to be a hit, word began to spread and so a completely new product for the equestrian market was born. Helen’s innovative design has since made a real impact on the industry, winning a plethora of awards and getting great results in scientific studies. Keen to bring more breakthrough products to other

Creators of the revolutionary

The HRP Wing saddle Pad gave my horse much more freedom in his hind quarters that extended throughout his entire body through to his poll, as a rider I could feel much more swing in his movements in all three paces propelled from his hind quarters forward, his gate felt more extended and free and his whole body more supple. Usually a tight, tense horse he relaxed instantly underneath my saddle becoming much more responsive to my lower leg. After exercising, my horse is usually quite grumpy when removing tack, after riding in the HRP Wing saddle pad I have noticed that my horse has become playful and happy and the biting that I would usually experience has stopped! At first, I was sceptical about what I’d heard the wing saddle pad would do for my horse, I can honestly say I have been very impressed by the instant results! I have now placed an order for all of my horses to ride in the HRP wing saddle pad! If you too are sceptic of the results, my advice is ‘the proof is in the pudding’, you must buy one to try it for yourself, you will see the difference immediately in both your horses movements and temperament! Helen at HRP Equestrian has proved so helpful in suggesting the right saddle pad for me and my horses!

Slip on your summer soundtrack and make some memories, says Kathy Carter

F

or many of us, summer is our favourite season. For eventing enthusiasts, there are plenty of enthralling horsey events to spectate at; Bramham Trials arguably kicks it off in June in Yorkshire, and then there’s Barbury Horse Trials in July in Wiltshire, and of course Gatcombe’s exciting Festival of British Eventing in August, in Gloucestershire. If you’re a racing fan, then you can pack your picnics and prosecco for the Epsom Derby Meeting in June in Surrey, followed by Royal Ascot in June in Berkshire. Ladies, if you’re attending a Ladies’ Day, have you considered what to wear? Skirts and dresses are de rigeuer, but, unlike the attention-seeking reality stars, a look that’s classy with understated simplicity is preferable. A top tip – don’t wear towering heels! A wedge sandal (ideally with a closed toe, in case the grass is wet) is a great option, or a closed-toe strappy number with a “kitten” or low heel. Flats are obviously a fine idea, and you can find some beautiful sparkly summer shoes this season that will still look smart and sassy. A fascinator or statement hat undoubtedly completes the picture. If you’re a showjumping aficionado, there’s Hickstead’s Derby Meeting in June in West Sussex, followed by the Royal International Horse Show in July at the same venue, with plenty of showing

 Whether relaxing at home or taking a road trip, the old tunes are often the best for a summer soundtrack classes to enjoy, too. August sees the British Showjumping National Championships in Warwickshire, as well as the spectacular London Global Champions Tour, to be held at the 300-year-old Royal Hospital Chelsea for the second year running. We can’t help admitting that we’re super excited about this event – it really brings a fresh touch of glamour to the sport, and the Royal Hospital Chelsea is a worldfamous location, being the home of the Chelsea Flower Show and the Chelsea Pensioners. Your summer mix-tape If you’re travelling by car to a summer event like the ones described above, you will need to pick the perfect seasonal playlist. It’s no coincidence that artists and record companies utilise nostalgia to sell records; summer, no matter where you’re from, is typically a time to

make memories! At this time of year, the sunlight undoubtedly influences our mood positively, and perhaps heightens our senses; and of course, many of us are indulging in exciting horsey activities, holidays to new locations and generally having fun. Kick off your riding boots, slip on your summer wedges and a summertime playlist, take a smug-summer-spectatorselfie at the horsey event of your choice (#havingSOmuchfun!) and you’re all set for a memorable time. According to influential music magazine Rolling Stone, the Beach Boys “pretty much own summer”. Think of cruising the highways in your vintage Ford Coupe (from the iconic group’s Little Deuce Coupe song), the car windows wound down, and the salty air blowing your hair attractively around your face, with the promise of a cool drink at the beach bar, and the chance to catch a wave with 

your surf board. (Admittedly, on a showery day stuck in traffic on the M25, the reality may be somewhat different!) Elsewhere in the summer back catalogue for your essential music playlist, you have Eddie Cochran’s Summertime Blues – a tale of rockabilly teen angst and the tribulations of trying to get a date; or Seals and Crofts’ more grown-up Summer Breeze, a timeless tune putting us in mind of a humid Texan town – “Sweet days of summer, the jasmine’s in bloom..” And in stark contrast, there is Alice Cooper’s cynical yet catchy anthem to the much-heralded summer break from education, School’s Out - “School's out forever, school’s out for summer...”, signalling the end of the school term (exciting for children; sometimes exasperating for parents). Let’s also not forget Don Henley's classic song, Boys of Summer – “And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong, after the boys of summer have gone...” – and of course Bryan Adams’

 The landscape of the Hebrides inspires the colours of the famous Harris Tweed, which may form part of your summer wardrobe this year

 Sparkly ‘Cinderella shoes’ aren’t necessarily practical – but they’re pretty! timeless ode to a simpler, nostalgic time, Summer of ’69 – “When I look back now that summer seemed to last forever; those were the best days of my life.” Summer fashion So, what to wear, when listening to such tempting tunes? In our last issue, we highlighted fashion trends forecast to hit the UK such as sparkles, feathers and sheer layers, in prints influenced by florals, art and equestrian graphic design, and in colours such as lavender,

raspberry and black and white. (As well as the gorgeous Millennial Pink, a cherry-blossom shade described by the Guardian newspaper as: “A sort of grapefruit shade of apricotty salmon.”) Interestingly (although not many practical horsey girls would perhaps have these on their shopping list), sparkly shoes are proving popular, with Victoria Beckham’s spangly, pointy “Cinderella shoes” making us all think back to Dorothy’s tootsies in Wizard of Oz and apparently inspired by Victoria’s daughter, Harper. Spring’s sparkles and feathers are still carrying through to the summer season, with fashion bible Harpers Bazaar advising that bold, block, primary colours, as well as sequins, pastels (heather lilac, soft pink, lemon and duck egg blue), fringing and tassels are Big Things for summer 2018. But, the biggest fashion news for this season is perhaps checks and tweed. As we have said before, tweeds will always be a perennial favourite within 

our industry, and you can catch them this summer in a variety of nature-inspired patterns, predominantly discreet and subtle. Described by Vogue’s fashionistas as “the sleeper hit quietly making its way across New York Fashion Week”, tweed is being paired increasingly with other fabrics, such as lace and faux fur. Vogue suggests we wear tweed with “something unexpected”, suggesting a leather skirt or a feminine dress. However, many of us are perhaps more likely to pair it with a pair of denim jeans and some lovely brogues, or smart leather countryside boots.

Who wears tweed in summer? Hang on, though – who wears tweed in summer? Well, it’s one of those fabrics that the Campaign For Wool explains is suitable for year-round wear: “Tweed is often thought of as more of a winter fabric. But while thick tweed that’s tightly woven may well be best saved for the darker months, the open, loose twill of a Harris Tweed can be worn all year round,” the campaign advises. Woven from 100% pure virgin wool, Harris Tweed is a great way to incorporate the fibre into your summer wardrobe – it’s hand-woven in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland, notably on the island of Lewis and Harris, the largest isle in Scotland. Fashion-wise, think Harris Tweed waistcoats, as well as bags, purses, shawls and evening wraps in beautiful tweed patterns, to add a smart look to your summer wardrobe! If you’re wondering whether tweed colours follow mainstream fashion, the answer is mainly no; tweed colour-ways tend to derive from nature and the land. The Campaign For Wool explains that tweed weavers draw inspiration from

44  |  SUMMER 2018   Your Horse & Country Magazine

the Scottish coast’s muted golden sands, ever-changing sea hues and the natural tones revealed in the seaweed, shell and rock. “100% pure new wool yarn is dyed [with] yellows and bright whites, dusky browns, briny greens and greys, and the finished cloth is flecked with the myriad colours you’d expect from the vast sandy shores,” the campaign poetically states of Harris Tweed. So, imagine honey beiges, subtle azure blue threads, lichen greens, and pinky shades in peach and raspberry, and you have your staple tweed summer wardrobe. Gastronomical goodies We Brits love our food, and summer is the perfect time to enjoy seasonal dishes with friends. The BBC’s Good Food experts state that current food trends tend to reflect changing attitudes towards health, community and the environment, with morning brunches, buddha bowls and avocados all being popular foody crazes for 2018. (Buddha bowls are all-in-one, hearty, filling dishes in one bowl, made of various greens, raw or roasted vegetables, beans and healthy grains like quinoa or brown rice.)

 Clockwise from below: add sparkle to your picnic with a glass of prosecco; hearty, healthy Buddha bowls are all the rage with foodies; complete your Ladies’ Day outfit with a statement hat; horses and riders are raring to go for another season

With several gut-health books becoming very popular recently, there’s definitely a trend for maintaining a healthy digestive system. Top ingredients to fulfil this purpose include foodstuffs with naturallyoccurring probiotic actions, like kimchi, miso and kefir, as well as foods acting as prebiotics, such as onions, garlic and other “alliums”, according to BBC Good Food. And to wash it all down, don’t dismiss a hot drink – why not pick a herbal or green tea (and look out for more “tea bars” starting to proliferate on the high street this summer).

TRAIN HARDER WITH TURMERIC

R

esearch has shown a new benefit for turmeric, the wonder spice commonly used to flavour popular curries – it’s giving elite and amateur athletes an edge over the competition. For a long time, it has been known that turmeric contains curcumin, which helps the body in several ways. That includes a product called TURMERIC+, it combines turmeric and vitamin C which assists with collagen formation to support cartilage function. Now we know that curcumin also helps with normal muscle function after high intensity exercise.

BENEFITS FOR ATHLETES

Scientists have been really taking an interest in turmeric. Our supplement, TURMERIC+, has been the subject of 29 published clinical studies, and the media has been taking notice too. This includes a study conducted with the participation of elite athletes at the Olympic Research Centre in Barcelona and, most recently, a study on Italian premier league rugby players which found significant improvement in recovery. A former player and director of the London Scottish Rugby Club, Angus Stewart, says the spice works for him. Angus says he started taking two tablets a day, adding: “I was much more comfortable whilst exercising and recovered more quickly.

“After a day in the gym I found the feeling in my joints felt the same as when I was younger. Now I feel I can train comfortably.” The results are in – curcumin helps your muscles to recover after high-intensity exercise. That means you can boost your training regimen and, as every athlete knows, a little more training gives you the extra edge you need on competition day.

YOUR SECRET WEAPON

But you don’t have to be in the premier league to benefit – anyone who exercises can benefit from curcumin. The difficulty is getting enough, because only 2-3% of turmeric is curcumin. Worse, after just two hours in the stomach, 98% of that curcumin is destroyed. TURMERIC+ tackles this issue scientifically. Our formulation combines curcumin with soy lecithin, which makes it easier for the beneficial ingredient to reach the bloodstream. Our supplement is 30x more absorbable than standard turmeric. It was triathlete Jane Paterson-Todd’s secret weapon when she qualified for the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in Rotterdam – a truly remarkable achievement for someone that took up competitive triathlons less than a year before. Better still, Jane finished 15th in her category. “It’s was a great honour to be there.

It’s somewhere that, a year ago, I couldn’t have imagined I’d be,” she says. “I heard about FutureYou and turmeric when I was looking for things that would keep me in tiptop condition, and I thought this is something I’d like to try. So far, so good! I’ve been injury-free, I’ve been competing at a top level, and I’ll continue.” So, if you’re looking to train harder, to perform at your best when it counts, why not try turmeric?

It’s applied to a wet coat, massaged in and then left for the rosemary oil to do its work. The Animal Health Company also offers Sensi Skin, a sensitive shampoo which is SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) free. It is great for horses that have sensitive or easily irritated skin. Its gentle formula means it is ideal for washing around their eyes. It dilutes one part shampoo to 18 parts water, so a little goes a long way. One for after a workout is Super Body Wash, with its tea tree and peppermint oil making it a very refreshing post-exercise shampoo. Even better, it is a non-rinse shampoo which means the aromas will last for longer. KEEPING UP WITH THE KINGS

Riding out the storms now summer’s here!

Spring’s poor weather saw the season off to a stumbling start but now it’s in full swing and Mary and Emily King couldn’t be happier. EVENTING

T

he event season got off to a very staggered start, and my horses had only two runs rather than four during March, but at least I have been luckier than some riders who haven’t managed any runs yet. I was getting very tired of all the rain and mud and desperately wanting summer to try a bit harder! Moreton, our first event of the season, had to cancel but the following week was Tweseldown and between Emily and I we managed to compete nine horses over the two days. My three were very happy to be out eventing again (and so was I!). They

all went well, with Joey winning the Open Novice. Sadly our more local event, Aldon, had to cancel after the first day, so my three who were entered in the Intermediate and OI (Open Intermediate) sections on the second day didn’t run. Our next event was Burnham Market in Norfolk, a long drive from Devon but well worth the journey. I ran Billy and Bobby on the Friday in the OI section, and although they both got a bit bogged down in the mud in the show jumping, they both did good tests and went clear but steadily cross country. Joey was meant to run in the CIC** the following day, but unfortunately heavy overnight rain meant

they had to abandon the event. Poor weather is so frustrating and disappointing for everyone, especially the event organisers who go to such a huge amount of trouble to prepare for their big day. With the continuing bad weather we were lucky to get a few runs in during April - few being the operative word! Sadly Weston Park and Sapey had to cancel so we were really looking forward to Belton where I had all three of mine entered, and Emily also had three. We were there for a couple of days and, as we have for the last 20-plus years, stabled with some lovely friends nearby: Iain, Della and Emily Graham, and their neighbours Paul and

Angie Ward, who look after us and the horses so well. I managed to run Bobby, who went beautifully in the OI, except he had two fences down in the show jumping. Frustratingly Billy and Joey, who had had a bit of a cough the week before, were flat and unmotivated so I felt it right not to run them XC. It was a treat to ride the famous horse Hovis in front of the crowds. He is a well-known mascot for the equine welfare charity Bransby Horses. I had my vet Richard Stringer check Billy and Joey’s bloods towards the end of the following week, and they were given the all-clear to run at Bicton. Billy was second

in the intermediate, which upgraded him to advanced level. Joey did his first CIC** and got a qualifying score so is now qualified for a CCI**, and Bobby was fifth (and jumped a great clear round show jumping!) in a strong OI section among some top Badminton-bound horses. So it was a super weekend at our superbly run local event. Sadly poor Withington Horse Trials fell foul of the wet weather so next up is when Bobby does his first advanced event at the lovely Chatsworth Horse Trials...eek! Badminton was incredibly exciting this year. I had walked the course twice a couple of weeks before the event, one

walk for the Horse and Hound preview, and one for Mitsubishi with Kate Humble from Countryfile, which was filmed for the Mitsubishi website. What a lovely, friendly lady she is! The 2018 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton turned out to be a true jumping competition. Nobody got the time XC, and there was only a peppering of clear rounds show jumping. The XC rode well, with many clear rounds (40), but it was the time on fairly holding ground which really sorted out the result.

KEEPING UP WITH THE KINGS

Both Emily and I wished we were riding there - maybe Emily will have one ready for next year, and me the following year (yes, I still haven’t lost the urge to compete at the top level!). I did three course walks during the week, one with 60 eager Beaufort Pony Club children, a number of signing sessions at Ariat, Logic, Mitsubishi, Joules and Gatehouse, a talk at the Savills hospitality marquee, and both Emily and I did our Mitsubishi ambassador part for the Grassroots competition. I am sponsored by Gatehouse for my riding hats, and they sensibly insist I wear new ones each year. I wear their Conquest one for the dressage and show jumping phases, and the HS1 for XC. British Eventing is retagging all hats this year to make sure everyone’s hats have up-to-date safety standards.

EVENTING With the beginning of our season being a bit of a washout, finally we are managing to get out competing! Our poor horses have been training so much at home that they feel all fit and ready to go, but have been unable to get out anywhere. They’re much happier now the season is beginning to get into swing! Our first outing of the season went well at Tweseldown with Rosie (Kings Rose) and Robin (Erme Valley) finishing third in the Novice and BE100. They were all extremely excited to be out and many movements were accompanied with squeals! We then had a good first international of the year up in Norfolk, at Burnham Market – well, half good. Quinn (Quinlan Z) managed to get a run in his first ever intermediate, where he did a very respectable test of 30, followed by the first fence down show jumping, then a great clear cross country around a very tough track to finish ninth. The ground was extremely deep, and the course had some real questions, so I was over the moon with how confident he felt. I then had Dre (Dargun) in the CIC***, but unfortunately all competition on the Sunday was abandoned because the ground was too wet - such a shame! The seven-hour journey home did feel very long, but at least Mum and I managed to run a couple of the horses. The younger horses all had a good run at Larkhill the week after. No prizes but great educational runs for the beginning of the season. We then headed up to the stunning Belton House in Grantham, where I had Dre in the CIC*** Grantham Cup, Quinn in his first CIC** and Rosie in the Novice. The sun shone and the ground was fantastic. Rosie got the weekend off to a very good start, doing a great test, followed by a fantastic double clear inside the time to finish on her dressage score and win the Novice! She felt class, and sped around the cross country with great ease. She’ll step up to Intermediate at her next event, which is exciting! Dre was feeling a little too happy in his test, which caused us to add a couple of extra exuberant movements! But apart from a little free-styling, he was very good, and some of his work was super. Even though it’s annoying not to perform a perfect, fault-free test, it’s always nice to know they are feeling well.

He then went on the jump a top-class clear SJ, followed by a fantastic clear XC. I made the decision to take him at medium and put a confident round under his belt luckily it all went to plan. He finished 18th out of about 90 of the world’s top horses, so I was over the moon! We had trouble last year with him tying up quite a bit (because of the condition azotoria), which really prevented him from getting the good runs we all knew he was capable of. But our new management system we have for him seems to have helped us to get on top of it... so I’m keeping everything crossed that it carries on working and he stays fit and healthy. Quinn was also a good boy in his first CIC** - and was also quite jolly in his test. There’s quite an atmosphere in the main ring at Belton with a huge variety of trade stands, children’s play areas and a big crowd, so it is quite an eyeful for the young horses. He then went on to have an unlucky fence in the show jumping, but followed that up with a really super XC round! I took him at a nice speed, not to gain a top placing but to finish with a qualifying score (to enable him to compete at Tattersalls CCI**U25), which he was able to do! Again it was a technical, up-toheight track and he popped around it full of confidence and ease. I’m very excited about his future. So all round Belton was a great weekend! After several more events being abandoned, we were all feeling rather fed up... but then, finally, the sun decided to pop out just in time for Bicton (our amazing local event) and it was just glorious! Perfect ground, a beautifully designed course and everyone full of joy.

I had a bunch of my younger horses there - Teddy (Joules Magic), Marco (Amore), then Rosie and Quinn. Quinn didn’t run XC as he’d only competed at Belton the week before, but I still took him to dress and show jumping as a bit of schooling. He did a good test and jumped a great clear SJ. Teddy and Rosie were a little excited in their tests (this seems to be quite a common theme this spring!) and had a fence each SJ, then Teddy had a green run-out at a drop fence XC, but apart from that they were both great. Teddy’s a lovely seven-year-old who was bred by a very good friend of ours, Patsy Mason. Patsy kindly asked me if I’d ride him for her this spring and he’s coming on in leaps and bounds and has a big future ahead of him. Marco is a very exciting five-year-old, who I ride for my fantastic long-standing owner Lord Patrick Beresford. Bicton was his first ever British Eventing event and he definitely started as he means to go on with a 34 double clear in the BE100. We got back late last night from Aston Le Walls where Quinn was fantastic and did a 22 dress, one down show jumping, then a fab clear XC for second in the Intermediate. I also had Rosie who did a lovely double clear in her first ever Intermediate – I’m very proud! As I finish writing this Mum and I are trucking up to Chatsworth where I have Dre in the first leg of the Event Rider Masters and Mum has Bobbie in the Advanced... so fingers crossed for a good weekend!

KEEPING UP WITH THE KINGS

AT THE YARD Having returned from a fabulous week’s skiing at the beginning of February in Les Houches with a bunch of friends (Freddie my son is working there for the season), it was then time to begin the horses’ canter work. We canter every third or fourth day and are lucky to be able to use a friendly farmer’s long, sloping grass field, which climbs up 300 feet. It takes approximately 20 minutes to hack to the field, going down 600 feet into Devon’s Sid Valley, so I feel they are nicely warmed up by the time they get there. We gallop at what we call 3/4 speed, so a strong canter, but not flat out. Once they have finished their work then it’s a 20-minute walk home back up the big hill. Through February we booked in for some dressage lessons with Ferdi Eilberg, who has been my trainer for many years. It was the first time Ferdi had seen Billy, Bobby and Joey as I only take the horses once they need a bit more fine tuning. They are at the stage now that they know all the lateral work and movements that they will ever need to do, but all three need to get their flying changes more developed and consistent and to gradually increase the engagement and collection throughout their work. I love going for lessons; they inspire me to keep working harder towards perfection! Em and I hosted two River Cottage evenings, which along with yard visits and evening talks filled up our February diary. Through March Emily and I did a couple of evening talks together and a photoshoot for The Blue Cross, which was the chosen charity at this year’s Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials. We also did a masterclass for the Mitsubishi Motors Cup at The Unicorn Centre, which seemed to be well received, and a popular lecture/demonstration for Baileys Horse Feeds at Hartpury.

KEEPING UP WITH THE KINGS

AT THE YARD I have a new and very exciting six-year-old horse called Hobbie, who was very kindly bought for me by Gill Jonas. He’s a lovely little horse who hunted lots as a five-year-old so is beautifully bold in the XC department! He’s still green in his other phases, but has a lovely movement and a great jump so I’m very excited about his future. He’ll definitely be one to keep an eye on. Plus, he’s a beautiful dun colour, so he’ll be easy to spot! I have some very exciting news in that I’m moving yards up to my boyfriend, Sam’s, near Chester. I plan to move all of the horses up there after Bramham, when we have a little break in the season. Everything will still be very much the same and Mum and I will still be doing lots together, we’ll just be based at different yards. So, very exciting!

BREEDING Our young stock, and the five foals that are all living out, were certainly looking forward to their field drying out. They kept looking surprisingly well, despite all the mud and rain. During the bad weather they were having a daily feed of Baileys Stud Cubes and Stud Balancer plus a couple of bales of Marksway Horsehage. I don’t rug up the foals but the older ones had Bucas turnout rugs on. They are now loving being in a new, big field with fresh grass, and sun on their backs. Their winter field is being rolled and then rested for a while. Tess and Zara both came into season at the same time and this year the plan is to get them in foal and for them to carry the foals themselves, rather than doing any embryo transfers. They were inseminated a couple of days ago - Tess with Van Gogh, and Zara with Ramiro B - so fingers crossed for their scan in a couple of weeks. Your Horse & Country Magazine SUMMER 2018   |  57

Watching your good-doer’s weight this summer! A

t this time of year, it can be all too easy let your horse graze away all day and then offer him more forage and concentrates when he is brought in at night, without a thought for the extra calorie intake. If your horse is a “good-doer” he will gain weight quickly and easily, and may be a little on the greedy side, constantly eating up and thriving well. Obesity can be a serious problem, placing extra stress on limbs, joints and the spine as well as the lungs. It will prevent a horse from performing at his best and he may also become lazy and sluggish. Adjust the amount and type of feed given according to your horse’s weight and the level of work he is doing. Any changes should always be made gradually. It is important to realise that overweight horses and ponies still require the essential

vitamins and minerals to lead a healthy life and they should receive a minimum of 1.5% of their body weight in fibre intake each day to maintain gut motility. If they are out grazing during the day,

additional forage, such as High Fibre HorseHage which has a lower sugar content compared to hay, can be given when they are brought in for the night. Mollichaff HoofKind Complete is ideal for the good-doer as it is a complete lowenergy, low-starch, low-sugar, high-fibre feed in a bag. It contains a balanced blend of oat straw, alfalfa, fibre pellets, soya oil, vitamins, minerals, biotin, trace elements and antioxidants and, when fed at the recommended levels, can be used as the sole bucket feed. It is suitable for horses and ponies prone to laminitis.  For further information and advice on feeding, please call HorseHage on 01803 527 274 or visit www.horsehage. co.uk

VET’S ADVICE with Dr Judith E J Maxwell MRCVS BVSc Bsc (hons)

Modern life can be tough to digest Long periods in the stable and travelling are just some of the situations that can play havoc with our horses’ digestive systems. Dr Judith Maxwell looks at equine gastric ulcer syndrome and how to prevent it.

H

orses evolved to eat a high-fibre, low-starch diet, over 18-hour days of selecting and browsing through the environment and taking in low amounts without competition from other horses and environmental stressors. Now fast-forward to the modern-day feeding situation where the horse is stabled with no access to roughage for long periods of time, the feeds are large and of much higher starch and sugar content than they used to be, and the feeding schedule is usually a time of high stress where the horse is anticipating being fed.

62  |  SUMMER 2018   Your Horse & Country Magazine – EQUINE HEALTH

 Right top: reduced appetite, weight loss and abdominal sensitivity are among the signs that your horse needs a check-up from the vet; right below: highperformance horses can be prone to stomach ulcers

VET’S ADVICE

 A balanced diet should include plenty of roughage like hay, as well as varied sources of fibre, including grains below

Racehorses in particular start the day early on and trying to get them to eat a small feed before exercise is difficult. Then when they are fed they are given highstarch food with little or no roughage to buffer it. The stomach is made up of two areas – the glandular and non-glandular. The glandular region secretes acid and is equipped to exist bathed in stomach acid. The non-glandular is more like skin, and is very poorly equipped to have stomach acid on it for a long period of time, and therefore is much more likely to develop ulcers. It has been demonstrated that in stable-kept performance horses the existence of stomach ulcers is likely in more than 80% of them. If the horse is experiencing stress, periods of prolonged starvation or low-fibre intake, or a lot of pain and is being administered pain management drugs, then the ulcers (graded from one to four) will start to get worse and become bigger, deeper and more problematic. It is worth mentioning that at this time of year it is good to remember that foals are really susceptible to developing ulcers, and very poor at showing us they have got them.  EQUINE HEALTH – Your Horse & Country Magazine SUMMER 2018   |  63

VET’S ADVICE

Risk factors Stress is the biggest trigger for gastric ulceration in any species. The high levels of stress hormones cause the receptors in the stomach to over-produce acid and therefore increase the acidity of the stomach. Most horses that are eating a lowfibre diet with poor chew rates and high starch and sugar levels in their diet will be predisposed to developing stomach ulcers. A high-starch diet (more than 2g per kg of

body weight) overstimulates the production of acid in the stomach and increases the pH in the stomach dramatically. This is the reason why competition horses and racehorses can be so prone to stomach ulcers as they are fed high quantities of starch to release energy for them to perform well. Thankfully we now have a wide range of performance feeds designed to keep energy levels up without the need for a high-starch diet. Water intake is also a matter for

consideration with horses that develop stomach ulcers, as the amount of water in the stomach will help to dilute the concentration of acid. Your horse might not be drinking enough through lack of access due to travelling or lack of availability. Their thirst drive could also be diminished, which is ultimately caused by stress, usually due to being in a new place and the horse spending large periods of time not drinking or eating forage. The most obvious times for this are when the horse travels away for a show, goes to the vet or moves stables or yards. Fasting or restricted intake Laminitic, hospitalised horses and greedy monsters that eat everything in front of them will be prone to developing stomach ulcers as they do not trickle food into their stomach and then will empty it quickly and will be standing around for long periods of time with increasing acid levels and no food (and associated saliva) to buffer it. The use of small-holed hay nets, feeder balls and an extra source of forage, usually in the form of a chaff in a feed bowl, will help to reduce time between feeds and promote as much chewing and saliva production as possible.

Turn out your horses as much as possible and remember that foals are susceptible to ulcers

Non-glandular region The non-glandular region is is poorly equipped to have contact with stomach acid for a long period

Oesophagus

Stomach

Glandular region The glandular region is equipped to exist bathed in stomach acid

64  |  SUMMER 2018   Your Horse & Country Magazine – EQUINE HEALTH

Training and performance Horses that are training in high-intensity work where they are galloping fast or jumping will be at an increased risk, as they are splashing their stomach acid around their stomach and then it will be coming into contact with the non-glandular areas that will ulcerate and become painful. Historically racehorses have been fed low levels of forage as it will limit how much hard feed you can get them to eat. The thinking was that it would slow the horse down if it had too much fibre in the hind gut and therefore extra weight to carry around. Some horses move acid around so violently in their stomach that they develop ulcers in their oesophagus (food pipe from the mouth to the stomach), which are really painful when they occur. These horses really benefit from eating just before exercise. I recommend a small feed (one to two handfuls) of chaff/fibre. Ideally this should have oil in it and alfalfa to give the full benefits we will discuss below. It will also form a raft to reduce the ability for acid to splash while the horse is exercising. Diagnosis Stomach ulcers are evaluated with gastroscopy, a flexible camera that can go down to the stomach. This is usually

repeated to see how well the lesions are healing and to see if there are any new ulcers forming. The clinical signs of reduced appetite, weight loss, poor coat, colic/abdominal sensitivity, diarrhoea and behavioural changes should encourage you to get your horse scoped to identify whether or not there is a problem – it is best to discuss this with your vet.

Small-holed hay nets can slow feeding

Alfalfa chaff is a good source of fibre

Oil can help to emulsify gastric juices

Apple bobbing can improve water intake

Nutritional management  High-fibre, low-starch feeding (ideally less than 1g per kg of body weight)  More than 1kg per 100kg of body weight in hay/haylage  Increase the frequency of feeds  Reduce the size of feeds  Turn out as much as possible  Provide varied sources of fibre – a range of both long (hay/haylage) and short (sugar beet/grain fibres) will give you the best chance of getting the digestive system into a healthier state.  Alfalfa chaff in particular is an excellent source of fibre. It contains a good range of fibre and calcium to neutralise the acid, it requires a considerable amount of chewing (saliva contains more calcium to aid in further chewing), it is low in sugar and in the majority of cases you can supply an extra bowl of chaff for the horse to pick at, which will give them an option to eat more slowly and have another source of fibre for the stomach.  Oil has also proven useful for buffering and emulsifying gastric juices. Horses can have up to 100ml per 100kg of body weight per day of vegetable oil, but watch your vitamin and mineral levels.  Encourage as much water intake as possible – clean buckets and apple bobbing can improve water intake.  Manage stressful events, such as travel, competition and hospitalisation. If your horse has a history of severe ulcers, then the vet will recommend specific drugs to help reduce the production of acid and will also offer drugs that will aid the healing of an ulcer and reduce the ability for acid to stick to the non-glandular region of the stomach. It will also give you an opportunity to start making changes to your horse’s management and diet to stop the ulcers coming back once treatment has finished. 

 Silver ions prevent growth of bacteria  Reduces foot odour  Strengthens & conditions  Adds lasting shine The common saying ‘no foot no horse’ forever rings true and keeping our horses feet in tip top condition can be the difference between a successful or disastrous competition season. Common hoof bacteria eats away at the hoof wall resulting in splits, brittle hooves, thrush and poor hoof condition that may struggle to hold on shoes. The environment where we keep our horses (be it field or stable) is a perfect breeding ground for these bacteria meaning it can be a never ending battle to not only maintain but improve the quality of the hoof wall. The silver ions in Silverfeet prevent the growth of bacteria resulting in significantly lower levels of bacteria surviving on the hoof. Using Silverfeet on a daily basis is a simple, cost effective and easy way to improve condition, strength and reduce hoof odour whilst also making the hooves look ready for the showring. Apply with a hoof oil brush to a clean, dry hoof taking particular care to those problematic areas around the nail holes and frogs.

Why there needs to be a focus on flies this summer Coming into summer there will be an increase in the number of flies in the environment and it will be important to take measures to protect your horse from them, writes Stephanie Fitzgerald MVB MRCVS

stomatitis and internal eruptions. Other than adult flies causing great annoyance to horses they often do not appear to suffer any ill effects even if they are carrying high burdens of bots. The best time to treat for bots is during the winter months, even though the life cycle of the bot fly can be up to 10 months. The best prevention of infestation is by removing the eggs laid on the legs during the spring.

A

s well as being an obvious annoyance to horses, flies can spread a number of diseases and infections that can have an impact on your horses’ health and wellbeing. There are a number of important common disorders caused by flies. 1. Sweet itch This is a hypersensitivity reaction of the skin due to the saliva of culicoides – more commonly known as midges. This is a seasonal condition, usually getting worse in the summer. It is unusual to see symptoms in horses less than two years old and it tends to get progressively worse with age. Face, ears, mane, tail head and ventral midline are the most common areas to be affected. This is an irritating condition to the horse which can cause the animals to rub parts of the body raw. However, with correct husbandry and treatment the symptoms can be managed effectively. 2. Spread of sarcoids Sarcoids are the most common skin tumours of the horse. They are locally aggressive with a high propensity to reoccur. Sarcoids are commonly divided

 Midges swarming in summer, above; below, flies have been linked to the spread of sarcoids in horses into six different categories; occult, verrucose, nodular type A and type B, fibroblastic type 1 and type 2, malignant and mixed. Flies have been associated with the spread of sarcoids. Sarcoids can be difficult and frustrating to treat due to their determined nature to reoccur; however, there are successful treatments currently available. 3. Bovine papilloma virus Bovine papilloma virus (BPV) is spread from animal to animal by flies, which commonly presents as warts. There is growing evidence to suggest that the virus plays a role in the development of sarcoids. Different subtypes of the virus, BPV-1 and BPV-2, have been identified in individual sarcoid biopsies. It is not clear, however, whether BPV is present in all sarcoids. It is also unknown if the virus is found in other equine skin tumours. 4. Bots Gastrophilus, ie. stomach bots, in horses spend most of the development time in the stomach of equines and are not generally considered to be pathogenic. The larvae in the buccal cavity occasionally cause

5. Spread of other infections and disease Blood-sucking insects are also known vectors for many blood-borne diseases, much the same as they are in humans. Occasionally, the horse may have a reaction to a bite, which can quickly become infected. Diseases including Lyme disease and equine infectious anaemia (EIA) are carried by ticks, horse flies and mosquitoes. What is the best way to reduce your horse’s exposure to flies this summer? It’s all about the management! It would be very easy to blanket medicate horses in the summer to try keep them fly and infection-free, but the most effective way of protecting your horse from flies this summer is through simple husbandry changes. 1. Keep horses in during high-risk periods during the day; keeping them in during the warmest parts of the day and turning them out at night. 2. Invest in a good fly rug and fly mask. 3. Keep muckheaps managed and as far from horses as possible. 4. Install fly traps in barns and stables. 5. Use insect repellent sprays and lotions containing citronella. 6. Feeding garlic. If your horse is unfortunate enough to suffer from some of the conditions listed above, contact your veterinary surgeon to discuss management and treatment options specific to your horse’s needs.

When choosing a hard feed in readiness for autumn and winter, it can be difficult to know what will suit you and your horse. Most of us feed to keep our horses feeling and looking well, whilst providing just the right energy for work. This is a balancing act to get right as seasons change, particularly if your horse has metabolic health issues like laminitis or Cushing’s. If you need feed to provide condition and health as well as useable, trainable energy, CoolStance Copra Meal fits the bill. CoolStance Copra Meal is a unique feed made entirely from coconut white. With naturally low starch and sugar levels, less than 11% NSC* and high coconut oil and digestible fibre, it is a great feed for all horses and ponies as well as being suitable for horses needing low starch diets like those suffering from laminitis or Cushing’s. It’s a great way to put on condition without excitability that could be associated with grain-based diets. Soaked to feed and energy dense, a little goes a long way! One of the things we love about CoolStance Copra Meal is how simple and uncomplicated it is, just 100% white part coconut that has been dried, heated and pressed to extract some coconut oil… milled to a meal… soak, stir, feed! That is the secret of its success and why it suits such a wide variety of horses from racehorses to riding ponies, show ponies to eventers, cobs to Arabs, veterans to hunters. Though not a formulated complete feed it is naturally suitable as a sole hard feed for most horses in light or moderate work. CoolStance is 10% coconut oil providing cool energy, glossy coats plus weight gain and condition. Coconut oil delivers energy uniquely – muscle glycogen created by MCT** fats found in coconut oil is more available than from other oils, improving stamina and quickening recovery rates. Some fatty acids in coconut oil possess antimicrobial and antiviral properties and may assist the immune system in fighting viral and bacterial challenges, leading to improved overall gut health and wellbeing. Coconut oil is amazing stuff but not so easy to feed on its own as it is solid at room temperature! That is why we have developed a unique powdered coconut oil that is easy to feed, even on the coldest morning. Add to your horse’s feed for a coconut boost or add to CoolStance for increased benefit. A simple, no filler, chemical-free, totally natural, 100% coconut feed. Available in the UK for more than 15 years, word has been steadily spreading - coconuts are the way to go. *NSC – Non-structural carbohydrates **MCT – Medium chain triglycerides

We’ve got sweet itch covered The Boett Blanket was designed in Sweden 25 years ago. Having been continuously developed it is still at the forefront of the market. Vets highly recommend it as one of the most effective treatments for sweet-itch and some insurance companies will pay for them as an alternative therapy. They are also recommended for the protection of horses with sarcoids and more widely used as a very effective fly rug. The blanket is used worldwide and is made from a unique light but strong breathable fabric which midges cannot bite through. The fabric has a “parasol effect” that keeps the horse cool in full sun so overheating does not occur. It has water and grease repellent properties. If you have any questions on the management and treatment of sweet itch, call our National Sweet Itch helpline on 01352 840333.

Perfect finish for every ride T

Take control of your surface with the ProGrade maintenance system

o fully support great performance, in training and in the spotlight, every surface – even the most technologically advanced – needs to be regularly and carefully maintained. Andrews Bowen surfaces are designed to be flexible enough to work with the horse – whatever the discipline, whatever the task. The ProGrade maintenance system delivers not just optimum condition every time but a consistency riders and trainers can control, with whatever surface they use.

The ProGrade finish The Andrews Bowen team wanted surface maintenance equipment that did everything and remained robust, so the company’s pro riders and design professionals drew up a wish list for the real deal – and built one that did. Now, using the Andrews Bowen ProGrade with top link roller height adjusters, equestrian professionals, riders and trainers can control their arenas, gallops, lunge rings and competition surfaces for the perfect

finish that works with their horses. For those competing at the highest level, and for the best performance at every level, having a surface that works with the horse is imperative. With the ProGrade you can set the ride consistency, from more relaxed going for everyday training to a firmer surface.

The ProGrade advantage Andrews Bowen surfaces are designed so that horses’ feet flow effortlessly through the top dressing, mirroring the ride-feel of prime-condition turf. The beauty of the ProGrade is it’s perfectly designed to keep your surface that way – for years to come. Choose ProGrade for day-to-day maintenance of any sand and fibre surfaces, whether waxed or unwaxed. Each Prograde is made by the Andrews Bowen Engineering division at the workshop in Lancashire, which ensures every Prograde is supremely durable and will help you get the best out of whatever surface you use. Andrews Bowen have also worked closely with

the Jockey Club to design the Prograde Gallop, which allows gallop tracks to be made to ride good, soft or even heavy simply by adjusting the top link roller height adjusters.

Performance made simple Towable by a quad or tractor, it is easy to attach and manoeuvre and can be adjusted by hand for quads, or using your tractor’s hydraulics. The machine also features a guide wheel to protect arena kickboards when using the plate to pull in from the track. ProGrade’s rollers are wrapped in mesh to reduce vibration and machine wear and are split to accomplish a superior finish even in tighter turning circles without the machine digging into the surface.  To find out more about the ProGrade maintenance system, call Andrews Bowen on +44 (0)1995 672103, email sales@andrewsbowen.co.uk or visit us online at www.andrewsbowen.co.uk

Let’s go

retro

Dad denim, vintage tees, baseball boots – men’s fashion is taking a decidedly nostalgic look back, writes Kathy Carter

A

Barbour jacket and Oxford brogues, with perhaps a well-worn checked farmer’s shirt for outdoor workwear, and a smarter checked shirt for evenings – this classic look is sported by many a male countryside enthusiast. The younger countryside gent also easily nails “smartcasual”, with the ever-reliable tailored shirt and quilted jacket, or a buttoned-up polo shirt. He also has a range of T-shirts with designs harking back to yesteryear’s racing car and motorbike heritage – think British motor racing’s golden era in the 1950s and 1960s, and Steve McQueen iconology. Both age groups are known to proudly rock their neutral-coloured “county” or flat cap. These outfits are, of course, smart and timeless – however, this season has some great new trends that could encourage the reticent, khaki- and beige-loving man to brighten up his wardrobe, or opt for something a little more daring!

Nostalgic dressing Firstly, the overall “look” that’s hitting the high street shops has been aptly described by fashion experts at GQ magazine, who write: “Every guy’s style icon for next season? His dad, circa 1983.” The tome reveals that Eighties styling is “in”, with “pastel colours, boxy suit jackets, light wash jeans and shades from the Dynasty decade”. They warn, however, that the idea isn’t for this to be costumey and to

mix just a few elements with your existing wardrobe. Whether you want to embrace this trend – or simply retrieve your own well-preserved Eighties items – is another matter!

Paternal denim In line with the Eighties fashion revival, the somewhat patronisingly described “Dad jeans” are also big news (the kind favoured by Jeremy Clarkson and Simon Cowell). They’re straight-cut and light washed, and for those who have hated the trend for skinny jeans on men, are a comfortable, loose fit. Apparently, the way to wear them is rolled up at the bottom, with old-school baseball boots or Chelsea boots.

world through her nautical collection in 1917. However, the fashion designers of today have decreed that vertical stripes are the way forward, and they were seen on everything from bomber jackets to casual shirts at various fashion week events. Frankly, we’d urge caution in over-dressing in the vertical stripe, to avoid making oneself look like a pyjama model; a single, slim-striped item like a navy and white shirt, teamed with colourcoordinated navy trousers, would look smart. (And if you can’t bear the thought of going vertical? The countryside retailers have a big stash of gorgeous horizontalstriped items to keep you in your comfort zone!)

The right stripes Vertical stripes are “big” this summer. Yes, that’s right, vertical. “But we like our stripes horizontal,” we hear you cry. The summery horizontalstriped top or shirt is an institution, hailing from 19thcentury French sailors, who wore a navy and white striped knitted shirt as part of their uniform as naval seamen in Brittany. The Breton top was supposedly easier to spot in the waves. Designer Coco Chanel is said to have popularised the horizontal stripe after introducing the design to the fashion

The right tone Whatever the “shape” and silhouette of your clothing, tonal dressing is also said to be a big trend for male dressing this year. That means choosing a single colour from the colour palette – let’s choose navy again for the sake of argument! – and then selecting two other colours in different but coordinating tones (apparently three separate colours within one colour family is enough), to go with it. So, your  Dad denim, as seen on Jeremy Clarkson, is “in”

MEN’S FASHION

aforementioned navy trousers could be teamed with a mid-blue shirt and an indigo jacket.

Return of the mac Yes, macs and anoraks are back! Not that they have ever gone away, of course, at least for the practical countryside set; however, this summer they’re deemed to be fashionable, often with a 1990s-nod. The high street has lots of waterproof jackets for those summer showers in dark, practical shades that are slightly sleeker than your standard outdoor jacket, but just as technical.

 Light wash jeans, two shades of blue, no socks – that’s three trends in one for those who like to multi-task

Check-mate As we mentioned previously, countryside males love a checked shirt – and this year, so does the high street. The largepatterned Prince of Wales check is proving popular on outerwear, as is the windowpane pattern – essentially a simple, single-lined oblong-check (that looks great in tweed).

Sans socks One of the most prevailing “looks” for men is the smart-shoes-without-socks style. Our readers will probably be divided on this issue – and if you have learned how to “rock” this look, good for you! But hang on – our feet sweat. Surely going without socks is uncomfortable and unpleasant? Well, the secret is to wear a pair of no-show loafer socks, or salvapiedes (feet savers in Italian). These are low-profile socks similar in style to trainer socks, and they may just save your feet if you are embracing this look.

added the elasticated insert, and were named by the swinging Sixties Chelsea set who later adopted the iconic boot. They look great with most outfits and come in a range of styles, from chunky versions more akin to a deep-soled “dealer boot”, to more slimline, refined versions that work with your rolled-up Dad jeans. Other popular footwear items for summer include heavy “skate shoes”, and the sensible “Dad sneaker” – see the aforementioned Jeremy and Simon, and picture their comfiest trainers. Baseball

and basketball-style sports shoes are also everywhere to be seen, with high-tops, and in bright colour accents – another nostalgic nod. And finally, there’s our perennial summer favourite – the deck shoe, or boat shoe. Developed in the 1930s in America, these have non-slip, non-marking soles, and most definitely are not worn with obvious socks! (Time to dig out the no-show loafer socks again.) These comfy footwear items will go perfectly with your Dad jeans and stripy top – of whatever orientation! 

The cool T-shirt As we mentioned at the top of this article, vintage racing car and motorbike imagery is de rigeuer on this summer’s T-shirts. A quick look at Harrods’ ranges also shows us that the most popular styles are essentially plain T-shirts with a cool image on the chest – ranging from skulls and sports team logos to the clothing brand’s own logo; seemingly a 1990s-nod. Despite it being summer, there are a lot of black T-shirts about, so this is obviously a good colour to be seen in, if you can bear the warmth!

Footwear Yes, another trend already loved by the countryside gent is “cool” – the Chelsea boot! Essentially a jodhpur boot, these were supposedly invented by Queen Victoria’s shoemaker, J Sparkes-Hall, who

Kings of the

road

A horsebox or trailer gives you and your horse real freedom to roam, writes Kathy Carter

O

wning your own horsebox opens up a gateway to competition, fun and training – and there are some wonderful vehicles available, with many owners opting for bespoke options to suit their needs, including conversions from pre-owned chassis. If you are ready to take the plunge and invest in a horsebox for you and your horse or pony, we have some useful information to take your travel experience from middle of the road to king of the road!

Staying within the payload Andy Mews, of AM Horseboxes, kicks off the topic by urging us to select reputable and experienced coachbuilders, if we are interested in a bespoke equestrian vehicle. “It’s important to find the right balance of appropriate weight, safety and strength of the construction,” Andy tells us. “For example, 3.5-tonne horseboxes are nowadays becoming increasingly popular, as they are easy to drive, park, and are very economical. Also, anyone over the age of 17 can drive them on a standard driving licence without the need to take a further test. “But with a horsebox of this size, it is vital that you know what the payload is, not only so that you can calculate whether it is legally capable of carrying one or two horses, your passengers and all of your tack, but also because travelling in an overweight vehicle may seriously endanger your horse and other road users,” Andy continues. “When we’re coachbuilding such a vehicle, we work to a payload (e.g. the total weight you can carry) of 1,200kg.”

A bespoke finish Dean Moody, of horsebox manufacturer Bloomfields, says modern coachbuilders are able to create some really beautiful vehicles for customers, with the right finishing touches offering owners really  Your Horse & Country Magazine SUMMER 2018   |  81

special vehicles that will become their pride and joy. “Whilst our lorries are built to exacting standards from a physical stand-point, we also love to help customers find the right aesthetic by carrying out bespoke paintwork jobs. All of our horseboxes include metallic spray paint in the customer’s colour of choice, that’s finished in a spray bake oven for lasting results as standard. But for something special, it’s nice to create bespoke spray designs, for example using logos and imagery. The interiors can also replicate this, to create a nice colour scheme in a rider’s colours, with home comforts that suit the rider’s needs,” he explains. “A horsebox is a huge investment purchase, so it is nice to make the vehicle super-special.”

Top tips for travelling

Daniel Owen, of Owens Horseboxes, says once a horse owner has a new equestrian vehicle, it is important to accustom the horse to appropriate protective travel gear, such as travel boots or bandages, so that the horse is comfortable and confident wearing them ahead of imminent journeys. He also reminds owners that they must

take the horse’s passport on board with them as it is illegal to transport a horse without it! “We also advise having emergency contact details readily available for nearby veterinary practices,” he advises. “Safety is key, of course; we offer a twin colour safety camera system as standard in our vehicles, so the horse can be monitored at all times from the cab,” Daniel concludes.

Should you go for a seven-tonne vehicle? If you are looking for a bigger horsebox, there’s certainly more options in terms of carrying larger horses as well as the essential tack and equipment. A 7,000kg lorry usually stalls up to three horses, or four ponies. Equi-Trek manufactures a range of vehicles, and managing director Tom Janion says the seven-tonne lorry is very popular. “This is because there’s no speed limiter or tachograph on the leisure vehicle lorries, and no MOT for the first three years after manufacture; these vehicles can also use the third lane of the motorway,” Tom explains. “With a larger vehicle, you can also be clever with the living area, for example

using an L-shaped seating area that converts into a double bed. You can even fit in a second double bed above the cabin of the larger leisure vehicles, which can be raised and lowered only when required,” Tom adds. “Equi-Trek even offers a model with an extra-large slide-out side, incorporating both kitchen and bathroom areas – great for overnight shows.”

What are the rules for transporting horses and ponies in lorries? There is a requirement for an operator’s licence for anyone who uses a vehicle (including a transport vehicle and a horsebox trailer) of more than 3.5 tonnes for carrying any kind of livestock in connection with a business. (If the journey is in connection with your own trade or business, a Restricted Operators Licence is needed. If it’s for hire or reward, you will need a Standard National Operators Licence.) You may personally not require licensing – but what if you’re using the services of a local transporter who runs a commercial business, however small? It’s important to ensure that they have the appropriate licensing and certification, and that the vehicle’s insurance policy is valid for hire

and reward. In addition, there may be a requirement for the operator to have a Certificate of Competence under welfare rules, if the journey in a horsebox is for hire or reward. Drivers or attendants responsible for transporting domestic horses and ponies (in connection with an economic activity) over 65 kilometres (40 miles) must hold a relevant certificate of competence; a Level 3 Award in The Principles Of Transporting Horses By Road On Short Journeys/Long Journeys (Attendant or Attendant/Driver).

Using the right-hand lane of a motorway The following vehicles are NOT permitted to use the right-hand (offside) lane on a motorway: l A horsebox exceeding 7.5 tonnes. l A horsebox over 3.5 and up to 7.5 tonnes with a speed limiter (these relate to the age of the vehicle). l A motor vehicle towing a trailer.

Are hobby riders exempt from licencing? To clarify, if you’re transporting someone else’s horse for payment in a lorry over 3.5 tonnes, and the fee is more than “fuel expenses”, you should get an operator’s u

licence; and if the journey is in excess of 65 kilometres, you should also gain a Certificate of Competence certification – however, transport of your own horses, if they’re kept as a hobby where the income does not significantly exceed the expenditure, is exempt! However, semi-professional riders and elite amateurs would be advised to check out their situation, in case they do need certification, as if their journey and competition forms part of their business, they wouldn’t be exempt. Furthermore, if a vehicle is carrying sponsorship livery decoration, its use could be classed as being used for commercial gain. The British Horse Society (BHS) advises: “If the journey is designed to make a profit, or be at least ‘cost neutral’, then it should be considered to be a hire or reward operation.” Industry guidelines are confusing and the rules for transporting horses and ponies even vary slightly depending on whether the animal is registered (e.g. on the stud book of a recognised breed society, or registered with an international organisation that manages equestrian competitions) or is unregistered. Best advice is to visit the Government’s website, for more info – www.gov.uk

Ensuring a horse lorry is roadworthy According to VOSA, the government agency responsible for vehicle safety and environmental standards, as many horseboxes are only used occasionally, users need to be extremely vigilant with basic vehicle maintenance. The organisation recommends regular, basic checks before using a horsebox. It’s important to note that VOSA not only carries out a test every year on horseboxes

to make sure they meet minimum standards, but also performs regular roadside checks throughout the entire GB road network, where your vehicle could be the subject of a routine inspection! Anecdotally, horse owners often suggest trying to make sure your horsebox looks tidy, e.g. no flowing bits of bailer twine or external hanging haynets, to create a good impression, and not arouse concern with any road-side inspectors! Useful safety checks on your own vehicle include checking the lorry’s wheel nuts for security and ensuring the tyre pressures are correct, as well as the tread depth. The BHS advises parking your vehicle out of direct sunlight to help keep your tyre sidewalls from perishing. Also, ensure the headlights work on each trip, and are the right colour. (You can also search online for “A guide for horsebox and trailer owners”, which is produced by VOSA).

Could a trailer be for you? If a horse box isn’t for you, many people opt for the more affordable horse trailer as their chosen method for transporting their horses. There are many different designs available on the market, ranging in size from small units capable of holding one or two horses to larger units capable of holding three to six horses, all of which can be pulled by a pickup truck or even a SUV. It is advised to check the towing capacity for your specific vehicle before choosing the right horse trailer for you. If you are unsure how to do this then the manufacturer of your car or truck would be a huge help and certainly be able to offer the advice you require. Before you hitch up and drive off it is advisable to check whether you need to

take an additional driving exam; there are some really informative websites available that will offer you this information free of charge – www.gov.uk/towing-rules is a good place to begin. If you do need to take a further driving qualification in order to tow a horse trailer, then don’t let this stop you in your tracks. There are a number of specialised transport training companies nationwide that will have tailored packages to cater to your individual needs. We found Bubble Towing to have a great range of courses available – why not give them a visit at www.bubbletowing.co.uk/course Buying a new or used horse trailer can be a daunting process if you decide to go it alone with so many different styles and variations available. It is worthwhile to contact your local new and used distributor, who will have a dedicated team to offer advice and talk you through each trailer’s individual specifications to ensure your purchase is the right one for both you and your horse. A great range is available at www.jswhorseboxes.co.uk and tallyhotrailers.co.uk n

Supporting your horse from the hoof up!

oddson Equestrian Flooring provides a great, cost-effective way of helping with the upkeep of your horse. Our flooring provides warmth and comfort as well as saving you time and money on cleaning and bedding. Helping to insulate the stables against cold, hard concrete floors, our flooring will reduce fatigue (swelling) on your horse's legs. Adding a substitute flooring on top of the concrete stable floor also offers great cushioning on your horse’s joints, without the need for additional bedding. Having a qood quality stable flooring from Doddson will also help offer a slip-resistant surface for your horse, especially when they are getting up from an afternoon nap or a nice roll in their warm, fluffy bed! Founded 30 years ago, under the name Lightfoot Surfaces Limited, we developed LS4, a three-part mix that is trowelled onto a prepared surface, such as wood, steel, concrete or aluminium to name a few. The product has been improved over the years and is now called Granlatech LS4. It provides a seamless, slip-resistant surface which is completely impervious and very hard-wearing.

We have supplied and installed this flooring around the world for various horsebox manufacturers, including Rice Trailers, Richmond Trailers, Brown Bros Ireland, Boeckman coach builders in Germany – and even in Prince Phillip’s own horsebox. We have also installed Granlatech LS4 for Sheikh Mohamed in Dubai, the Al Thani family in Bahrain, the Sultan of Brunei, the Sultan of Oman and many more. Granlatech LS4 has been used extensively on horsewalkers, in stables, vets’ rooms, walkways and passageways.

We have also installed it in equine swimming pools. All of our products have been specifically designed for use under or around horses. Our rubber mats are 6ft x 4ft x 17mm thick and can be used in stables, passageways and walkways. The mats are strong and can be easily fitted. Our rubber pavers have been designed for use in parade rings, walkways, passageways and horsewalkers. We also have coloured pavers that will keep their colour in direct sunlight for those areas that always need to look their best. The wall padding that we supply and install is a very hard-wearing, high-density foam and reduces stable injuries caused by horses kicking the walls or doors. We have supplied and installed this product for HRH Queen Elizabeth II at her stables in Sandringham and many more establishments around the world. We also sell wood shavings in large flakes, which come in 20kg bags. We can deliver anywhere in the world, whether it is one bag, one pallet, one lorry load or a container full.

Time to reflect on paddock fencing and arena maintenance Keeping fences and gates in good repair is an important part of maintaining a farm, whether large or small. Good fences help keep livestock safely housed. Besides being dangerous, a sagging fence or gate, broken gates or posts and downed or loose rails mean your horses are at risk of being easily stolen or tempted out onto a busy road or into hostile territory, possibly injuring or killing themselves in the process. Here are a couple of simple and inexpensive tips to help make fence and gate repair easier.

Chicken wire to protect wood fences Many horses chew wood fencing, especially when confined in small areas. They can destroy a fence very quickly with this bad habit. Some owners apply foul-tasting

coatings to try to deter chewing, but there are horses that chew wood no matter what you put on it. Some of the things people try (like old motor oil) are toxic, so if you want to use a paint-on or applied chemical chewing deterrent, use one that is approved for horse areas. A better, safer way to protect wood fences is to cover the posts and rails with smallmesh chicken wire. Horses can’t chew through it and it’s unpleasant on their teeth, so hopefully they will quit. Fence rails or posts can be readily protected by covering them with chicken wire, cutting it into strips the correct size with tin snips. It can be stapled to the rail at frequent intervals so there are no loose patches or protrusions—just a smooth surface that the horse can’t grab hold of. Use staples that are large enough to hold

98  |  SUMMER 2018   Your Horse & Country Magazine

securely and never pull out. When rolling the strips along the rail or post, all cut edges should be tucked under, making sure no loose edges stick out that could injure a horse. Even with the chicken wire in place, a nontoxic wood preservative can be applied to the wooden rails and posts or gravel boards periodically, and the wood fence will last a long time. Chicken wire protection is very cheap compared to replacing chewed-up posts or rails. A roll of it will cover a lot of fencing when cut into correctly sized strips. Staples will be another expense, as will your time. But when you weigh these costs against having to repair or rebuild the fence, it’s obvious that the chicken wire is cheap insurance, giving a much longer life to your wooden fence.

Pro-Equestrian Surfaces unrivalled performance

Fixing a sagging gate

Arenas Following a very wet winter, is your arena looking tired and in need of some attention? Here are some ideas to improve your sand, sand and fibre or sand and rubber manège.

Sand Arena

Re-level, paying particular attention to the migration of the surface into corners and gravel boards. Once level, consider rejuvenating by power harrowing the manège to remix the fibre in the sand. If the surface depth is four inches or less, think about adding more sub-angular sand and fibre such as Beta-Ride®, a 100% new product that is a mixture of polypropylene, polyester and nylon (OVAM-approved), to a level of six inches.

Sand and rubber arena Wooden or metal gates can become a heavy burden to open and close if they begin to sag and drag on the ground. Gateposts should be sturdy and set deep to avoid sagging. But unless the posts are set in concrete, even well-constructed gates can drag because posts can “give” over time. In some areas, the ground is unstable and won’t hold a post well, especially for a heavy gate. For example, frost can push posts upward, making them less secure. Occasionally, a simple pole panel is used as a gate in an opening that does not have a sturdy post for hanging a proper gate. Having to lift or drag the panel to open and shut can be a back-breaking chore. These problems can be solved by putting a small wheel underneath the moving end of a panel or sagging gate. The wheel takes all the weight and supports a gate or panel to prevent further sagging and enables easy opening and closing. Posts rot where they meet the ground and should be replaced if this is the case. Another reason for gates sagging is that they are often constructed using mortise and tenon joints; the tenon part of the joint often works loose. A remedy before they go beyond the point of no repair is to use nylon bail twine and something like a short length of broom handle. Clamp the gate by tying the length of twine round the gate and use the broom handle to tighten the twine by twisting it in the twine. This clamps the gate, which will tighten the joints. While it is clamped, either drill through the mortise and tenon and insert wooden dowels or simply screw two screws through the joint.

Re-level, paying particular attention to the migration of sand into corners or gravel boards. Once level, take advantage of all the rain over winter and roll while the sand is damp. Why not consider adding fibre such as Beta-Ride®, a 100% new product that is a mixture of polypropylene, polyester and nylon (OVAM-approved), before the summer takes hold and the sand dries out and starts to ride deep?

Sand and fibre arena

Re-level, paying particular attention to the migration of the surface into corners and gravel boards. A problem with the older rubber manèges is that the edges in particular, but not exclusively, compact very hard and levels are often extremely thin down the centre line and very deep and compacted around the margins. A solution is to hand-rotovate around the margins, taking great care not to let the rotovator bury itself and dig into the membrane. Add more sub-angular sand if the surface depth is four inches or less and add fibre such as Beta-Ride® Plus, a 100% new product that is a mixture of polypropylene, polyester, nylon and Lycra (OVAM-approved), to a level of six inches. Adding the Beta-Ride® Plus to a tired sand and rubber arena greatly improves the rider’s confidence and horse’s performance.

I

f you’re responsible for your horse or pony’s paddock, you will know that it is a year-round job to keep the grassland looking its best. A good, well-maintained paddock helps keep a horse or pony in good health – we’re not just talking about nutrition here; for example, flattening and rolling rivets, vehicle channels and poached areas, which can trip up both horses and owners, keeps the ground safer. Meanwhile, maintaining horsefriendly fences helps keep the horses within the confines of the field, helping to ensure their safety, while removing poisonous plants and managing the grass helps keep a strong and healthy sward that’s full of goodness.

Live by the

sward

Soil status The landowner will be responsible for managing the actual nutrient status of the soil, and may undertake analysis to ascertain the soil type, the pH and nutrients. Grass and soil assessment also helps ascertain the levels of lime, phosphate, potash (water-soluble potassium) and nitrogen in the soil, and periodically (annually if required), the land owner can re-seed areas of the land after harrowing, to influence the types of grass growing. Harrowing tends to be carried out in spring, in conjunction with rolling; the process lifts the vegetation up (as well as dead grass), and levels the ground to a degree. It allows air movement and root aeration, which helps the soil to “breathe”, and plays a part in the reduction of parasites. Rolling the land afterwards helps bed in any seed, and can help flatten the aforementioned rivets, vehicle channels and poached areas. Soil and grass analysis allows the landowner to top up the grazing with

the correct type and amount of fertiliser, if it is used. Landowners are generally trying to balance nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Sulphur and magnesium are also relevant for equine paddocks. (Nowadays, we are all more “clued up” about the risks of laminitis where high yields of grass are concerned, so landowners should bear this in mind, aiming to avoid overly-lush pasture. If fertiliser is used, it should be specific to equine grazing.) While the above roles aren’t always undertaken by the horse owner, elements like the regular removal of droppings and poisonous plants do usually fall within the horse or pony owner’s remit!

100  |  SUMMER 2018   Your Horse & Country Magazine – BUILD IT

Top tips for optimising paddocks 1. Rotation The need for rotation depends on the size of the field and the amount of equines in it – rotation can mean changing fields completely to “rest” a paddock, or fencing off sections within a larger field, usually with electric fencing, to be rested. 2. Changing vehicle routes and gates This depends on your field layout, of course, but if you’re able to seasonally change the access for vehicles like utility vehicles, you will help to preserve the area for longer, and reduce poaching around the gate area.

PERFECT PASTURE

3. Managing the amount of horses and ponies in the field People tend to allow 1.5 to two acres per horse, and it is important to try to keep “spare” land for rotation. (It does depend on turnout time, e.g. if the horse is stabled at all. And also whether the field is mainly there for turnout, or whether the horse needs its nutrition to be predominantly supplied from the grass.) Over-grazing a field is detrimental to the pasture. 4. Drainage If you’re seeing regular boggy and wet areas, then drainage could be an issue – the drainage ditches around the field may need clearing, as vegetation may have overgrown, or there could be a blockage. 5. Check the fencing is suitable The British Horse Society recommends that in general, fences should be 4ft high, with the lower rail set 1ft 6in above the ground; and if possible, they suggest fencing heights of 3.6ft to 4.6ft for horses. The fencing, whatever type is selected, should be regularly maintained and checked. 6. Ensure adequate shelter Horses need access to shelter from the sun and flies during the summer months. Robust field trees and hedges (e.g.

Paddock maintenance calendar Year round: regular droppings removal. Early spring: harrow and roll to help repair winter damage. (Re-seed poor areas, if required.) Poisonous plant removal. Ragwort can be sprayed in February-March, ideally in its rosette stage, e.g. its first year, if equines are not grazing on the fields. This is because ragwort becomes palatable after spraying. Late spring and summer: test soil pH and nutrient levels, and top the pasture to keep the grass manageable and healthy. According to the British Horse Society, fields should be topped a minimum of once a year during the spring or summer, to improve the pasture by encouraging the grass to hawthorn, hazel or quickthorn) can work well, while field shelters are popular. A shelter for two medium-sized horses is usually around 24ft wide x 12ft deep in size, and a minimum of 9ft in height. 7. Managing poisonous plants, especially ragwort

establish a thick turf, and new leaf growth. (Always remove the cut grass). If it was too wet to harrow and roll in spring, it can be done in early summer. Carry out regular poisonous plant and weed control. Early autumn: beware of a late flush of grass, to help beat laminitis. Prepare the fields, fencing, drainage and gateways for winter. Poisonous plant and weed control; ragwort can be sprayed midSeptember to mid-November, if equines are not grazing on the fields. Winter: try to rotate the paddocks where possible and reduce turnout time if feasible, if the pasture would benefit from it. In late winter, soil pH and nutrient levels can be checked. It is essential to manage the plant ragwort, or Senecio Jacobaea, in equine fields, as it contains toxic compounds that can cause liver damage to equines. PERFECT PASTURE

a ragwort fork. Despite its bitter taste, equines will eat ragwort, especially during times of poor land management. The ragwort plants need to be destroyed, or disposed of in landfill.

Paddock vehicles Your wish list of mechanised pasture assistance! Cross over utility vehicles These small, four-wheel drive utility vehicles, like the Gator, are very useful for getting from farm to field, and transporting fence posts, animal feed, hay and equipment around the yard. They may also have tippers (ideal, for example, for emptying a water tank into a field container) and tow-bars for pulling machinery. Quad bikes A quad bike can tow lots of your essential equipment like small trailers, chain harrows, toppers and rollers, as well as paddock cleaners, and these multitasking vehicles are also very useful for transporting people from A to B, on a large equestrian property. Compact tractors These can take any form, for example, tractors with small loaders for haylage bales, and cutting decks for grass cutting. They’re ideal for farm-based properties and, if budget allows, some larger models even have enclosed cabs with air conditioning, heaters and music speakers! Muck trailers Muck trailers are designed to be hauled and tipped by farm tractors, and usually have tail-gates and safe ramps. (No slippery, wobbly planks of wood in sight!) They’re ideal for keeping field droppings and stable waste tidy and compacted. 

Paddock cleaners Are these the ultimate, agricultural/ equestrian property gadgets? Paddock cleaners are super-time-efficient, and contribute to well-maintained paddocks; they also help reduce exposure to worm eggs, as many internal worm parasites in horses are ingested by grazing contaminated pasture. Many high-end paddock cleaners are multi-tasking, e.g. clearing up and removing poisonous acorns and sycamore seeds, as well as field manure, even cleaning out water troughs and removing old stable bedding with their powerful suction hoses. Look out for wide turf tyres on the wheels, to protect

your grass! A good example is the Kylix range, at kylixuk.co.uk – the towable Predator Cub II vacuum paddock cleaner, pictured below, has wide turf tyres and a gantry-supported hose, and even tackles large quantities of wet droppings. It’s also easily emptied. A common question is, can modern paddock cleaners really pick up horse droppings in uneven fields or in long grass? Fortunately, paddock cleaners with powerful vacuum hoses like the Cub tackle most field terrains, even picking up wet droppings from long grass, in conditions that brushes or sweepers would struggle with.

A weighty issue According to the British Horse Society, research has found that horses can eat up to four per cent of their body weight as grass per day, in the summer; it is therefore important to balance a horse’s need for free exercise and equine interaction against the danger of consuming excess calories. Horse owners can use grazing muzzles and strip grazing, e.g. smaller paddocks or areas of grazing that are fenced off, to help reduce unwanted equine weight gain.

Pasture management Quite simply, the grass beneath your horse’s feet is your cheapest and healthiest ‘feed’, providing the pasture is optimally managed. If we start to think about horse paddocks as natural factories which can produce a nutritionally sound and cheap feed, then we also need to think about caring for the raw ingredients and biological processes that occur in the factory in order for it to work efficiently and provide your horse with the ideal forage. Forage makes up the largest portion of a horses diet and so it makes sense that the grass under the hooves of a pasture kept horse is providing the optimum nutrition, after all the majority of protein, energy and fibre in equine diets is obtained from the forage (grass, hay and haylage) but how we treat the land can have a profound impact on the health of the grass and therefore the health of the horse. In this article we will look at what simple operations can be carried out in your own fields in order to grow the healthiest grass. Many of the activities are just scaled down versions of what we do on an annual cycle

at Devon Haylage. Our drive to grow ‘Forage for Healthy Horses’ ensures that we take care of each of our fields from the soil up and you can too; resulting in less reliance on conserved forage and hard feed.

Spring During spring the ground warms up, soil biological activity increases and things start to grow! However, as the spring of 2018 has proved to us, ground conditions are often too wet and prevent us from getting on the land for routine operations. As things do start to grow, with the help from a plant and grasses identification key (or someone who knows about plants!) have a good look at what you actually have growing. Ryegrass is often not the most suitable grass for equine pastures due to its high energy and sugar content. More suitable species are those that are naturally lower in sugar and not as productive such as Timothy and Fescues. Invasive or toxic plants such as buttercup and ragwort should be appropriately removed but other grassland herbs and wildflowers are incredibly beneficial both for horses and the environment and could include yarrow, sheep’s parsley and plantain. As soon as ground conditions allow try to harrow your field. Paddock maintenance companies offer this service or just try

pulling a small set of chain harrows behind a vehicle yourself. Avoid driving on waterlogged ground as this will compact the soil driving out the air. Without air in the soil many important micro-biological processes are hampered which can affect the uptake of certain minerals and impede root growth. Healthy grass relies on the optimum uptake of minerals and their ratios to each other, more information on this can be found at forageplus.com. Knowing the mineral ratios present your grass by having it analysed, helps you to be more informed when devising feeding plans and suitable supplementation. Harrowing spreads any dung piles, drags out dead grass, aerates the roots and stimulates growth, then apply any fertiliser needed as per results from soil testing taken in the autumn. The soil may not need any nitrogen but still may require potassium or phosphorous for healthy grass growth. Organic blends are available as are preparations’ including seaweed for example which does wonders for conditioning the soil. In areas which are patchy or devoid of grass then consider over-seeding (when all frosts have passed) with a suitable equine seed mix. This can be broadcast by hand and then on large areas rolled to consolidate. Alternatively allowing sheep in for a few days will consolidate the seeds but be sure not to leave them in too long! Keep horses off the over-seeded patches for at least 6

weeks. If you haven’t re-seeded areas it’s a good idea to roll the ground anyway. This encourages the grass to thicken and levels any ruts made by hooves.

Summer The summer is the time to enjoy watching your horse graze on its healthy free forage! Ultimately, older more mature grass will be better for horses than lots of young lush sugary grass and so depending on your horse’s type, health and workload, spring and summer grazing may have to be restricted. How much access to grass you allow your horse to have will also be dependent on the weather conditions of the season as drought stressed grass will be higher in sugar. When restricting grass intake be aware of the potentially high sugar levels of short cropped grass and of your horses daily requirement for enough dry matter and fibre intake; supplementing with hay or haylage may be required. Consider sectioning of areas that can be allowed to mature to provide forage in the winter months, termed ‘standing hay’. Thicker grass in winter paddocks will also help to prevent the formation of too much mud!

Autumn Autumn is all about taking stock and planning for the year ahead. Soil testing is a really useful tool to understand the health of the soil, from this you can work out what if anything needs to be applied. Many people worry that by fertilising they will be just growing lots more grass, but this isn’t necessarily the case. Grass needs a host of minerals in order to grow healthily, many of which can be found in your own dung pile! Regard spreading your dung heap onto ground that can be rested over the winter as feeding the soil rather than fertilising the grass. A soil test will also tell you if the pH needs adjusting. Soil pH can impact on mineral uptake, grass growth and biological activity and can be adjusted by spreading lime which is available in small amounts from agricultural merchants. Autumn is also a good time for mulching to fill in bare patches or to improve the diversity of grasses in your pasture. Have you ever noticed how sometimes young

grass can shoot under where a haynet has been hung? The seeds from hay can remain viable for many months and so providing your hay contains a desirable mix of low sugar grasses and beneficial herbs then try using it to mulch bare patches during the autumn and winter. The layer of hay keeps the ground moist and warm allowing germination, by spring you will have re-seeded areas with minimal effort!

Winter If possible rest paddocks in the winter if they haven’t been let up for standing hay or graze lightly to prevent poaching. Winter is also a good time to maintain hedges. Hedges are a wonderful resource for horses and wildlife but gaps may need to be filled in with either planted shrubs or by laying existing branches to improve its integrity. A good hedge will not only provide horses with shelter from sun, wind and rain but can also provide a brilliant source of antioxidants and minerals from both woody species such as hazel and willow and from herbaceous species like cleavers and nettles. There is also some fascinating science that goes on between the roots of certain trees and beneficial bacteria and fungi which live symbiotically with the tree and by doing so release valuable nutrients into the soil.

Superb structure and dark vibrant soil created by the large root masses of cocksfoot and Timothy grasses over the last 15 years. Soil and nutritious grass are completely self-sustaining without the need for chemical fertiliser intervention.

orses as sentient beings have evolved to access nutrients from locations within their environment as they need them, regardless of where they may be located. Of necessity, we have to keep horses in a restricted environment – hence they often need a mineral supplement. But why not manage your horse’s environment in a sustainable way that releases the nutrients they need from the soil? Grassland that has been fortunate enough to have lain undisturbed by the plough for decades will contain an abundance of soil microbes that will have stimulated the production of a naturally balanced ecosystem. The grass species feeding on this rich environment may well be unproductive and lacking vigour, but that is easy to rectify. Once the soil is ploughed, this fragile

environment and the microbial profusion it contains will be annihilated and it takes many years to recover to the previous prolific state. That is not so easy to rectify! Soil-borne micro-organisms are crucial for the fabrication of healthy, productive plants. These bacteria and fungi have a symbiotic relationship with the plant that benefits both species. To function as a growing environment, the soil needs to contain 25% air and 25% water. The air is essential for microbial respiration and the water is essential to allow the dissolved nutrients to move from the soil into the plant root hairs. The bacteria stimulate the production of plant growth-promoting hormones which rapidly boost the plant’s natural defence mechanisms. The boosted natural defence mechanisms will also generate a plant with a stronger

constitution better able to withstand the vagaries of the British weather. The other significant benefit of this interaction is that the plant is also capable of utilising water more effectively so that it can distribute the absorbed nutrition up the plant. The crucial benefit of these bacteria is that they produce organic acids which break the chemical bonds that normally hold the nutrients (think magnetism) in the soil colloid. Once the bond is broken, the nutrients are released from their bound state and are then freely available in the soil solution for the plant roots to absorb. Consequently, a healthy, well-fed plant is created. When a root grows it naturally generates an exudate (slime layer) on the outer surface. This exudate contains amino acids and sugars that the microbes feed on and use to produce protein and therefore grow. In exchange, the microbes release hydrogen ions which break the chemical bonds that hold the nutrients in the soil colloid. These nutrients can then be absorbed by the root hairs utilising osmosis. Once in the plant, the nutrientfilled water (sap) is distributed up the xylem tubes from the roots to the sites of utilisation within the plant. This process

(transpiration) is driven by the available potassium extracted from the soil once the microbes have released it. One of the most important groups of microbes necessary for highly productive soil plant interaction are the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). This fungus naturally occupies ever greater areas of the soil adjoining the roots, as well as growing into the plant roots themselves. Consequently, the potential area for nutrient absorption is increased a hundredfold. During the years that the plants and microbes are left undisturbed to profuse then the greater this total colonised area becomes. Ultimately the environment becomes populated by self-sustaining soil flora and fauna that enrich their habitat to stimulate the generation of continuously productive grass. Getting hold of a can of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is both difficult and expensive! So, the top three things that we can we do to help generate AMF are: Disturb the root zone as little as possible and allow the soil to flourish. Don’t plough unless absolutely necessary – for instance, to incorporate organic matter. Aerate the soil bi-annually with a chain-harrow or similar. Needless to say, the grassland needs to be firm and dry enough to travel on without damaging the sward. This activity will always be the most cost-effective sward management strategy ever undertaken as it removes some of the dead thatch and allows air back into the top soil. The other benefit of scratching the soil surface is that a chemical reaction occurs, resulting in a small quantity of nitrogen being extracted from the atmosphere and placed directly into the root zone, stimulating growth. Incorporate appropriate grass species into the sward, and especially Sheep’s Fescue (Festuca ovina), pictured below. This is an extremely hardy native British species, which has developed the extraordinary ability to withstand challenging environments by growing its own mycorrhizal fungi. An innovative piece of evolution! Not only does it thrive, but the other grass species in the sward become healthier and more prolific because of this innovation.

3 Poorly structured, highly compacted soil that was ploughed and killed five years ago. Complete lack of air means soil microbes are dying and soil is dead and inert as a consequence. The grass is unable to withstand grazing or weather. Worms are aerating soil and allowing the microbes to breathe, hence the rich, dark areas around their tunnels.

Nutrients

Here is a recap on the key nutrients to balance the soil, and therefore the nutrition available in the grass. Phosphate (P) Phosphate stimulates root growth. Magnesium (Mg) Magnesium regulates phosphorous uptake, is a structural component of ribosomes, a major constituent of chlorophyll production and plays a crucial part in transforming sugar and starch in the plant to utilisable energy. It is also a crucial component of nerve and muscle function. Animals short of magnesium tend to be hyperactive and unpredictable. Calcium (Ca) Calcium is an integral part of all cells, and the major constituent of the middle lamella which is formed during cell division. Calcium is also required for bone development and plays a significant role in muscle contractions – a shortage will lead to cramp. In extreme cases, the autonomous peristaltic function within the gut can stall. Potash (K) Potash drives transpiration, the movement of dissolved nutrients in water (sap) up the plant to sites of utilisation. Potash applications will need balancing with regular applications of magnesium to prevent grass tetany occurring. Grass tetany occurs when the horse’s diet is too high in potassium, which means that the extra cellular fluid is permanently high in potassium. This upsets the delicate sodium: potassium ratio and consequently the nerves and muscles cannot relax, creating restless, hyperactive animals that lack body condition and display a lack of ability to increase weight. I am often called out to investigate hyperactive horses that have become unpredictable and unresponsive, despite considerate handling. In the majority of cases it is because there is a lack of calcium and magnesium in the soil, which is exacerbated by an excess of potassium in the grass they are eating. Hence the owners are feeding calcium and magnesium supplements to calm the horses. Save money and create sustainable happy horses by allowing Lordington Park Agronomy to rebalance your soil.

Use a Hollow-Tine Aerator to deepen aeration and relive soil compaction.

Tree tips for paddocks and pastures Deric Newman is general manager at Glendale Civic Trees. In addition to enhancing the appearance of landscapes, trees provide a number of benefits to horses, as long as the correct species are selected, planted and effectively maintained. Key benefits Primarily trees are used to provide shelter - from sun in the summer months, and cold, wind and rain in the winter. When leaves are shed in the autumn, it results in improvements to the soil fertility of the pasture, leading to a better nutrient uptake for horses. Tree roots also reduce erosion, maintain water clarity and absorb nitrates from manure. Placement In paddocks, the best place to plant trees is in the corner or just outside the perimeter of the area, as this makes it easier to fence them off from horses. Positioning trees so they provide the maximum amount of shade during the hottest points of the day is important,

while making use of semi-mature specimens ensures trees are tall enough to provide shading straight away. It’s for this reason Civic Trees was commissioned to deliver a planting project between the paddocks at a private polo club in Berkshire, planting semi-mature Fastigiate Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus Fastigiata) to shelter the horses. Species selection Here’s Civic Trees’ top five recommended species for planting around horses: •

Acer campestre (Field Maple) and cultivars

Carpinus (Hornbeam) and varieties

Fagus (Beech) and varieties

Liriodendron tulipifera (Tulip tree)

Tilia (Lime) and varieties

There are some trees which should be avoided because they contain toxins with the potential to poison horses. These include Sycamores, Red Maples and acorn-bearing Oaks, among others.

Visit civictrees.co.uk/tree-planting today or email info@civictrees.co.uk

There are also certain local factors which can determine the best tree species to use on a particular site. A visit from one of our experts can provide further guidance. Civic Trees specialises in planting large, semi-mature specimens (typically over 4m tall) which are already formed and shaped, leading to their development as fine trees at maturity with no technical pruning required. Their size also means they have a greater visual impact on the landscape and are more ‘horse-proof’ than smaller, younger specimens. Further considerations When undertaking planting projects, it’s imperative that guards, guying techniques and stabilising structures are safe for use around horses, which is why Civic Trees uses a bespoke, underground guying system, meaning there are no potential hazards surrounding the tree. As with all planting projects, adequate aftercare programmes are essential to ensure newly planted trees can thrive, including watering, pruning and feeding.

There is cat overpopulation in inner cities all across England and Wales and too many kittens are born to too few good homes. The future for feral or very timid cats can be bleak as most charities don’t have the resources to find ANIMAL WELFARE farm homes and deliver and set up release pens, so SNIP specialise in finding homes outside the city for them.
