ummer is the season for sport, whether you compete or provide that all-important support from the sidelines! There’s nothing better than packing up a picnic and heading off to spend a day in the sun at one of the UK’s many equestrian events. And there’s none bigger than The Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park this season, which returns from August 2 to 4 with no fewer than five British championships and, says Event Director Peter Phillips, a packed timetable of activities to keep even non-horsey visitors entertained all weekend. Stephanie Bateman rounds up some of the highlights, from competitions to camping, on Page 12. I’m sure many of us will manage to tear ourselves away from the action for a spot of shopping among the diverse stalls at Gatcombe. Equestrian events are always a great place to stock up on essentials, discover new brands and treat ourselves – Kathy Carter offers her tips for savvy summer shopping on Page 20 and making this season’s fashion trends work for us on Page 104. I spend a lot of time in conversation with customers on the phone, learning much about their horses whilst answering any queries. The following questions are ones that crop up regularly but if you have others not answered here or have any else you would like to discuss, do get in touch on 01404 813100 or claire@devonhaylage.co.uk

I’ve heard you should feed hay or haylage all year round – why is this? Some horses tend to over eat hay or haylage when it is offered and not self-regulate. This is a concern for the owners of overweight horses or those prone to gain weight easily. The problem is most evident when horses are suddenly supplemented with forage in the winter months when grass quality and quantity declines or they start to be stabled. By offering hay or haylage all year round, the horse will not see forage as a novelty when it is presented and will be more inclined to self-regulate, thus maintaining a healthy weight.

Why should I offer hay or haylage 24 hours a day? Firstly, horses should never be without a fibre source for more than about 2 hours. Their digestive tract is designed to process a trickle of food on an almost constant basis. Going without, for a long period of time can cause the ‘stress response’ to kick in where a cascade of hormones warns the body there may be a famine and so to hold onto any available fat. Secondly, when horses are stabled for part of the day and only offered hay or haylage when brought in, they may tend to overeat or eat what is offered very fast. In their mind, they don’t know when the next available ‘meal’ will come along; they don’t have the mental capacity to tell themselves to save some for later and so they’ll gorge on what is available. If forage is also offered when out in the field, having hay or haylage once stabled is not a novelty and so the horse will be more likely to self-regulate the amount eaten and the time it takes to eat it! The key is to ensure enough forage is offered so the horse can trickle feed for the duration of time in the stable and they don’t run out too soon. True ‘free choice’ forage feeding may take a while to accomplish, but along with adequate movement, the benefits are huge.

Why should forage be nutritionally tested? After grass, hay or haylage makes up the second largest proportion of your horse’s diet, offering significant amounts of fibre, carbohydrate, protein, vitamins and minerals. It is also

much cheaper kg for kg than any bagged feed. It therefore makes sense to pay close attention to and understand what your forage is contributing to your horse’s diet in terms of nutrition so that you can supplement (give extra energy, protein or minerals) where necessary. It may be that your brood mare needs more true protein than offered by your forage or that your hay contains too much sugar for your Shetland, or that the energy levels in your haylage are too low for your performance horse. Comprehensive nutritional testing will also illustrate the minerals, and more importantly the mineral ratios found in your forage, assisting you to target specific health issues with extra supplementation should your forage fall short in a specific area. At Devon Haylage, we can provide all this information for our four types of haylage. Recently this information has helped a customer choose the most appropriate of our haylages to feed, in order to balance the high levels of potassium present in her grazing. Another customer needed to know the ‘true protein’ quality of our haylage (using the nitrogen to sulphur ratio we provide) as her horse had a liver condition.

Should you always feed a balancer? Unless formulating a bespoke feeding plan using mineral straights based around the deficiencies of forage, balancers should be offered for all horses on a mainly forage based diet. This is because UK grassland will naturally be deficient in some minerals whilst abundant in others. Try to use a balancer formulated to specifically target the nutritional deficiencies of forage, as this will help to ensure your horse receives the correct ‘ratio’ of minerals which is very important for overall health. UK grassland is generally naturally abundant in Iron and so the best balancers take this into account with formulas containing low levels of iron, which acts as an antagonist to block the uptake of other beneficial minerals. Some bagged fibre feeds now contain an added balancer so check labels well.

What is the best way to feed hay or haylage? Anatomically, it is better for a horse to eat with a lowered head. This not only aligns the jaw properly and uses the correct muscles but also prevents small particles from dropping into the eyes or nostrils. So, feed from the ground if possible or if using nets position them so that the horse must drop his head to eat. To avoid waste in the field, use something like a wooden crate, large tractor tyre or a commercially made agricultural feeder. Ensure any commercially available feeders are of the ‘tombstone’ design to avoid damage to the top of the neck and poll area should the horse suddenly raise its head when feeding.

Your questions answered by Claire Burrow of Devon Haylage Why did my horse develop loose droppings when moving over to haylage? The equine gut contains a sensitive mix of multiple strains of billions of bacteria, vital for the efficient digestion of fibre. When there is a sudden change to the diet these bacteria can have a little shock, upsetting the delicate balance and can cause loose droppings. Always introduce a new food stuff gradually. There is also a chance that the haylage fed was too damp and/ or cut too early resulting in a rich acidic forage which could upset the gut. Always make sure the haylage you buy is from a reputable supplier who understands the quality requirements for horse haylage and that you ask to see the annual analysis before buying as this can tell you a lot about the haylage under that plastic. You want the dry matter to be around 70% and see visible seed heads. Furthermore, some horses could be intolerant to some grasses. Ryegrass intolerance is most common and so I advise customers to try our Native Mix or pure Timothy haylage instead.

My horse needs a low sugar diet. Is soaking hay enough to remove sugars? It is imperative to know the sugar level of your hay before you start. It is impossible to tell just by looking at hay what the sugar level may be. Even very old tough hay could have high levels whilst fresher, sweeter smelling hay may be OK; it all depends on the growing conditions and species of grass, so nutritional testing is vital when feeding hay to sugar sensitive horses. Depending on the sugar levels at the start, soaking alone may not be enough. Sometimes a washing machine action is required to force enough sugar from the fibres. A safer and easier option is to feed a low sugar haylage such as our Devon Haylage Timothy. The 2018 batch has just 5.6% ESC (simple sugar) as fed.

Why is haylage better for laminitics? When cut grass is wrapped in an anaerobic environment, the naturally present lactic acid bacteria on the grass stems utilise the sugar within the grass as an energy source as they replicate, breaking it down into volatile fatty acids. This reduces the amount of sugar within the haylage making it a much safer option for sugar sensitive horses such a laminitics and those with EMS or IR. Hay doesn’t go through this process and so can still contain high levels of residual sugar. Timothy grass naturally contains less sugar than other grasses such as Ryegrass and so haylage made from Timothy is a particularly good option for such horses. Our High Fibre Ryegrass haylage however, due to the efficient fermentation that takes place is still safe to feed to laminitics at just 6.1% combined sugar and starch as fed. Ryegrass hay however, should be avoided for any sugar sensitive horse.

What type of forage is best for a sport horse requiring a high protein diet? Again, only a thorough nutritional analysis can tell you if a forage contains the required protein for a performance horse. It is important however, to look at the protein quality rather than just the crude protein level, as the crude protein contains both true protein and non-protein nitrogen. A protein level of around 8% is adequate for the average horse but this must be regarded along with the nitrogen to sulphur ratio to tell us about the quality of that protein. Generally, grass cut early in the season with contain more protein along with higher energy levels and lower fibre than grass cut from June onwards. It is not only the protein level to consider for a performance horse, because if they won’t eat much of the forage, they won’t get much benefit from it! So, choose a tasty, palatable forage which will encourage consumption, like our High Fibre Ryegrass. This has 9.6% crude protein (dry matter basis) with a perfect nitrogen to sulphur ratio indicating that there is very little non-protein nitrogen present, perfect for horses requiring quality protein in the diet.

My elderly horse can’t chew tough hay – what can I do? Apart from feeding a complete forage replacer in the form of soaked nuts or chaffs, some haylage may be soft enough for those with poor dentition to cope with. Our Native Grass & Herb Mix haylage is made from fine grasses; being soft and palatable it’s proving to be very popular with elderly equines. Because haylage goes through a mild fermentation, it is slightly easier to digest than hay and so for elderly horses who need a little extra help to maintain condition, a soft haylage which is easy to chew may help.

Feeding haylage can make horses ‘fizzy’, is this correct? Haylage contains slow release energy rather than fast release energy provided by grains for example. Slow release feeds alone cannot make horses fizzy, but my advice, should you witness a behaviour change after starting on haylage, is to look at the overall diet and assess what other energy sources are present, along with the activity levels of your horse. Remember, when turned out, a horse will be moving an awful lot more than one that is stabled. Often, it comes to light that the horse is also receiving a bucket feed high in energy, and spends much time stabled. Adding another energy source into the diet simply adds to the already quite high energy levels resulting in hotter behaviour. Many horses (unless in hard work or underweight), when fed adequate hay or haylage won’t require a bucket feed other than to hide a balancer or medications in.

Fabulous

festival With a beautiful parkland setting and plenty to occupy all members of the family, The Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing is an event not to be missed this summer. Stephanie Bateman catches up with Event Director Peter Phillips to find out what visitors can look forward to this year.

I

f you’re looking for a super day out in the countryside with all the family this summer, then look no further than The Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing (August 2-4, 2019). This great weekend of equestrian sport sees riders of the highest level competing for not one but five British championship titles, including the pinnacle of the event – the Magic Millions British Open CCI4*-S. But The Festival offers way more than just top-class eventing. For the younger and non-horsey members of the family, there is a packed timetable full of fun and interesting displays. “After all the showjumping is finished in the main arena, we have a series of arena attractions from the Shetland Pony Grand National to Dressage to Music,” says Event Director Peter Phillips. “There is also the Ye Olde Red Tail Falconry team who come in and show off the birds of prey, which is a real highlight, especially for the children who are allowed to go and meet the birds.”

This year sees a very special event – the Pony Club’s 90th Anniversary Celebration – with a big display planned on the Saturday. “We also see the return of the Military Tug Of War, with the final held in the main arena on the Saturday, so there’s a lot of activities going on as well as over 100 trade stands for people to be able to wander around and get a bit of shopping in,” adds Peter. If that isn’t enough, there’s also the Pony Club Mounted Games, the Parade of the Duke of Beaufort Hounds, the Dodson & Horrell Arena Eventing, Dubarry Young Event Horse Series and “Have a Go” dog agility. “If you are coming to watch the eventing, Gatcombe Park is one of the more unique venues for watching equestrian sport, as you can come and sit in a beautiful part of the world with a picnic in the Park Bowl where you can see a huge amount of the action unfold in front

t The Ye Olde Red Tail Falconry team put on a display; below, the Shetland Pony Grand National (photo: Stephen Bartholomew); above, Harry Dzenis tackles a jump (photo: Peter Nixon) of you,” continues Peter. “You don’t have to walk from fence to fence, which is ideal for families with small children.” In fact, the event boasts two fantastic viewing areas; the Park Bowl and the Avening Banks. “The Park Bowl is an obvious amphitheatre, but over the last few years, Avening Banks has been designed more with the spectator in mind, so you can pitch up there for the day and watch the horses going over that section of the course,” explains Peter. “We also have a fantastic food court

which provides a wide variety of delicacies selected from local food producers, and we ensure visitors have all the necessary services that you would come to expect from a major event nowadays. “The Festival is a fun, family day out regardless of whether you are into the sport of eventing or not. There is plenty to come and see and keep everyone entertained on an August weekend. As well as having the five British championships, it’s simply a lovely place to come and spend the day.” u

VIP extras If you fancy experiencing something a bit different, why not consider buying membership to The Hamptons International Garden Club with ringside tables offering a perfect view of all the

action? The Garden Club offers a VIP dining experience with ringside tables, delicious lunches, a full bar, morning coffee and afternoon tea for an extra £10 or £15 a day.

For those who don’t want to miss out on any of the action, why not pitch a tent or caravan at the event’s on-site campsite and make the most of all three days? “The camping is just across the road from the main horsebox park and dressage arena, so it’s only a short walk and you are on the site,” says Peter. “You can walk straight to the dressage arena or take a nice walk up through the park and into the main showground. It’s a great spot to base yourself for the weekend.” When you book camping, as part of the camping package you get two entry tickets to the event for the whole weekend. There is also the option to upgrade your tickets to include the Garden Club, with its arena-side hospitality. “Pitches, especially electric hook-ups, need to be booked up in advance, but with up to 120 pitches, there’s certainly enough space. The atmosphere is great and we have a brilliant team managing the campsite. They will do everything they can to accommodate everyone’s requests in terms of being able to pitch up next to friends, for example. As per the whole event, we try and make this a fun weekend for the whole family.” Camping Information Campsite opens from 9.00am Thursday, August 1, until 12.00pm Monday, August 5. Once at the campsite you should exchange your E-ticket for a camping pack – this will contain: camping wristbands x2, one vehicle pass, event programme and campsite regulations.

THE MAGIC MILLIONS FESTIVAL OF BRITISH EVENTING 2019

Magic Millions In 1983, HRH The Princess Royal and Captain Mark Phillips opened their idyllic country home in Gloucestershire to the eventing public, and The Festival was born. Today, the event boasts a number of championships classes and sees in the region of 40,000 visitors through its gates over the three days of competition, coming to witness the thrills and spills of top-class eventing in spectacular grounds. Last year saw the beginning of a long-term partnership with Magic Millions (the Australian thoroughbred auction house) team, who use this event as a platform to continue to grow their brand and promote women’s ownership in equestrian sport. Aptly for the sponsor’s first year, the championship was won by Australian Christopher Burton who clinched his second British Open title with Trisha Rickards’ Polystar I. “You couldn't script our first year of the Magic Millions partnership with The Festival of British Eventing – Chris Burton, an Australian and a close friend, wins the 2018 event,” says Katie PageHarvey, President of Magic Millions. “His win at the superb location of Gatcombe Park and in the warmest weather for 30 years really was a fairytale weekend. “It is like no other event anywhere else

in the world. A village-like atmosphere appears overnight across Gatcombe Park – horses, horse-lovers and elite athletes all living together celebrating the best horses and riders. This event intimacy is amplified by the brilliance of the Captain Mark Phillips-designed cross country courses – the audience are woven into the course, so you see the intensity and athleticism of every competitor up close. There is no separation between competitor, horse and audience.” 2018 Magic Millions British Open

 Christopher Burton wins last year’s Magic Millions British Open on Polystar I (photo: Peter Nixon) winner Chris Burton added: “The win was particularly dear to me. Not only because I am so fond of the amazing horse Polystar, but it was particularly nice to be top of the podium and presented with the prize by an old friend, Katie from Magic Millions.”

Home of five British Championships The Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing hosts five British championship classes: the Magic Millions British Open, the Smith & Williamson British Intermediate, the Dodson & Horrell British Novice, as well as the TopSpec Challenge for the Corinthian Cup held at Restricted Novice level. An Advanced Class will also give top riders a chance to run their second horses. Captain Mark Phillips’ courses provide a true test of riding, with the courses at all levels being some of the most demanding on the circuit.  One of the most prestigious accolades in the sport of eventing,

The Magic Millions British Open Championship attracts the most wellestablished horses and riders on the world stage. Horses qualify throughout the season with successful results at Advanced level and above. The Magic Millions British Open Championship runs as a CCI4*-S. The CCI competition runs across two days with the dressage taking place on Saturday and then showjumping on Sunday morning. On Sunday afternoon the competitors run cross country with the top ten jumping in reverse order, keeping the tension and excitement running right until the last horse comes through the finish line.

 The Advanced Class is the only class that is not run as a championship at The Festival. However, it is still a big draw for the top riders to give their second string advanced horses an opportunity to run.  Another class to attract some of the circuit’s top combinations is The Smith & Williamson British Intermediate Championship. Horses qualify for the championship throughout the season with successful results at Intermediate level. The Championship class runs over an advanced track, one of the highest levels in eventing.  The Festival also hosts the RoR/ 

NTF Retrained Racehorse Event Championship sponsored by the National Trainers Federation. The RoR/NTF Retrained Racehorse Event Championship runs as an Intermediate Novice meaning combinations undertake an Intermediate dressage and showjumping test but run at Novice cross country height. The top 10 after cross country are invited back to showjump again the following day, to compete for the top-level prize money. For this championship, the Retraining of Racehorses sponsors have put up a £6,000 prize-fund. For more information, visit www.ror.org.uk l The Dodson & Horrell British Novice Championship is contested by combinations who have qualified for and placed in a Novice Regional Final. The Novice Championship gives amateur riders the opportunity to compete against the stars of the sport on their best up-and-coming horses at one of the most prestigious events. The Novice Championship course runs over an Intermediate course, so provides a good test and stepping stone for rider and horses. l The TopSpec Challenge for The Corinthian Cup launched in 2015 is a restricted amateur Novice championship. It is a true Novice test and, in keeping

Captain Mark Phillips’ courses provide a true test of riding, with the courses at all levels among the most demanding on the circuit

with the grassroots nature, riders must not have completed an Intermediate Class in the current or preceding five years making sure that the competition is as fair as possible. It is the grassroots event for those people and horses who are overqualified for the Mitsubishi Motors Cup. It is great for amateur riders to be able to ride and have their own championship at such a prestigious venue. l Another key competition of The Festival is the qualifying round for the four and five year old Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse Championships. The series is an opportunity for riders to bring out their young horses to experience the atmosphere of big events and qualify for the final at Burghley Horse Trials in September. The horses are judged on four categories – dressage, showjumping, conformation and quality, and suitability and potential. aminitis is described as a disease of the foot resulting in pain, lameness and loss of performance. It is a very complex, and often multifactorial disease; nutritional management is often crucial and there are a few things that should be considered, writes Charlotte Wilkinson BSc (Hons), ANutr, Dodson & Horrell Thoroughbred and Performance Horse Nutritionist. Firstly, monitoring the nutritional analysis of hay/haylage and grass is recommended. Choosing a forage that is lower in sugar and starches would be suitable; these tend to be later cut hays but are not always limited to this and it is always worth getting your forage tested to illustrate its nutritional value. SUMMER SHOPPING

smart Shop

In uncertain times, we Brits are being more selective about what we buy. Kathy Carter offers her tips for savvy summer shopping, from wardrobe to tack room.

T

here’s no denying that how we shop has changed – and bricks and mortar shops are certainly struggling, in some sectors. Last year also saw lower Christmas sales and a wave of shop closures. But (if we dare mention the “B” word!) the current state of affairs in terms of bricks and mortar retailers isn’t just down to Brexit. There’s greater competition from online retailers (the UK’s annual revenue from online retail and ecommerce is currently more than £150 billion), an increase in business rates and, despite a 4.9% rise in the living wage, uncomfortable “wage stagnation” that sees frugal shoppers counting the pennies. However, we are still buying quality goods, and retailers that service a niche market (and do it well), are often thriving. An article in the Daily Telegraph quoted Nick Harrison, senior partner at analyst firm Oliver Wyman, as saying: “The retailers which thrive in the future will offer customers something unique.” And this statement sums up the situation perfectly.

 The high street had a tough winter – but we are still looking for good buys

How we shop

“Big” investment purchases (think homes and larger horseboxes!) have been put on hold for some people while Brexit’s uncertainty continues, with many of us considering updating our existing properties, instead of “upping sticks”. However, Brits are still shopping, but are making their purchases count, conducting more research and doing their shopping homework first. Rather than spending more regularly

20  |  SUMMER 2019   Your Horse & Country Magazine – SHOPPING

on almost “disposable” items, there’s a current argument for more “savvy shopping”. For example, choosing quality, well-engineered items that will last; making the journey to an out-of-town specialist retailer to stock up for the next six months (or the season) with hard-working, wellengineered items; choosing fewer pieces (think fashion and jewellery), but making good choices (e.g. items that work with each other, and are not impulse or “wear it once” buys); and choosing manufacturers and brands whose business model means they don’t need to make their RRPs skyhigh, and can use fair-pricing policies. What is the point, for example, in having a multitude of ill-fitting breeches that aren’t flattering, look a little tired and are an embarrassment on the school run, when a couple of carefully chosen, multi-tasking items will last, and look the part? And what about that groaning shelf in the tack room, full of dusty impulse buys? Here are some examples of how you can apply savvy shopping techniques to your imminent retail purchases.

Making items multi-task

Many of us go to the gym, or to an exercise class – so why not choose riding wear that is hard-wearing, easy to clean, fast drying, and doubles up as exercise wear? Today’s “riding tights” are hybrid items, based on sportswear technology – technical leggings that look as good at the health club as they do in the saddle. Scorching North has, for example, a wide range, including its Graphite Technical Riding Tights from the Performance line, priced at under £40 – technical breeches made from four-way stretch microfibre fabric with suede and silicone grip knee pads. Derby House’s Elite Riding Tights are also smart and versatile – featuring mesh panelling and breathable tech stretch fabric, plus anti-rise silicone gel on the inside ankles, they retail at £39.99. Save money on your gym wear by choosing riding tights that also look good with your trainers – a quick wipe down with a damp hand removes stray horse hairs and dust, and you’re good to go!

Eclat Equestrian Alongside our own brand and infamous Rose Gold Collection, we also stock a beautiful selection of hand picked products from other quality brands such as Tech Stirrups and eQuick.

Making your accessories work for you

Invest in key accessories, and you can brighten up the most plain and simple capsule wardrobe. For ladies, scarves are always a winner – we like Lazy Jacks’ Ladies Scarf, which retails at £14.99. The raspberry and mint shades will dress up any outfit this summer. The brand’s Ladies Diagonal Zip Shoulder Bag is another example of choosing a brightly coloured  PROMOTION

SUMMER SHOPPING

accessory to make your outfit “pop”. The pink Woodland version is a favourite, at £26. Men can get in on this trend, too – entice the man in your life into the world of man bags, with On Your Bed’s Oilskin Dog Walking Bag – a stylish and practical walking bag with a waterproof lining retailing at under £30. Man bags are officially cool, whether they’re holdalls, satchels or backpacks; but the trick is to buy a bag made from quality material, such as leather, PU leather or oilskin cotton, that will last and last. Remember (men and women), you don’t need dozens of bags and scarves – just a carefully chosen selection that you adore.

Look for cost-effective brands

This savvy shopping doesn’t just extend to clothing, of course. Those of us with horses do tend to spend the spare income we do have on our equine charges – but how can we get more “bang for our bucks”? One way is, notably for the big purchases, to look for brands that perhaps don’t have the big overheads of some of the larger players, and can make their items more cost-effectively. Elico, for example, produces the Abberley Lightweight Turnout Rug for under £50. It is 600 denier ripstop and perfect for cooler days at the end of summer. The brand’s Ingleton Combo Rain/Fly Rug is another good-value item – retailing at £54.95 it has a clever waterproof 600 denier section along the back and neck.

Choose quality over quantity

The trick regarding quality over quantity is to buy less of each item. Numnahs and saddle pads spring to mind – dare we go to the tack room and count how many we have; is it in scary, double figures? Choose well-made items that will last and wash well, and you really don’t need to have stacks of each item in the store room. Retailer Country & Stable, for example, stocks saddle pads including the ProSport Classic Dressage Square from LeMieux for £52.95, which is lightweight and lined with bamboo fabric.

Gifting

Birthdays, thank-you gifts, even the dreaded Christmas gifts – there’s always an occasion to buy for. But how can we gift thoughtfully? The key is really thinking about the receiver (not scooping all of the generic “three for two” items off the shelf in desperation – typical “that will do” gifting.) We can all find out something about the

 Clockwise from top left: On your Bed’s Oilskin Dog Walking Bag; Elico’s Abberley Lightweight Turnout Rug; Tarrag Naegel Jewellery’s Farriers Loop Bracelet; Light Frame Designs’ Personalised Book Shelf; LeMieux ProSport Classic Dressage Square from Country & Stable receiver that will make their gift special. For example, matching an item of clothing to the colour of their eyes, or choosing a small piece of pertinent, handmade jewellery that relates to a special interest or hobby. Designer David Rudge has come up with a clever idea for gifts and home interiors – Light Frame Designs feature bespoke light-up artwork that can be personalised. For example, his 7” x 10” Personalised Book Shelf is a remotecontrolled hanging image in the shape of a bookshelf, featuring up to five names on the spine of the books, and lit from behind (price: £40). A nice way to make your gift count and look thoughtful, and the ideal gift for a couple or family.

Pooling funds On that note, another way of shopping cleverly is to club together with friends and family to buy a special item for a loved one. It shows forethought and planning, and means you can get something really special. Tarrag Naegel Jewellery’s Farriers Loop Bracelet is a classic, understated bracelet with a farrier’s loop and simple catch, retailing at £75, and is a lovely way to show that you and your collective “gifters” care. Another nice item for a female is a handbag, such as the Joules Thernwell Ladies Handbag (price: £53.99), available from retailer Derby House – it’s leatherlook, but as it’s made from PU synthetic leather it’s vegan-friendly.

Four top tips 1 Attend trade fairs and events with a list of possible purchases (or gift recipients), so you aren’t tempted by items you don’t need. 2 Make a list of all the main birthdays and gift occasions (including Christmas) and budget throughout the year – there’s no harm in getting a gift early if the price is right, and you’ll spread the cost.

3 Trim down your own wardrobe, and try to make most things “go” with lots of outfits. Develop a colour palette and only buy items for yourself in these hues, or in neutrals. 4 Rifle through your horse’s rug and saddle pad wardrobe, and donate those holey, shabby items. Re-stock with highdenier ripstop rugs and high-tech saddle pads. 

Embracing the moment... Tarrag Naegel’s beautiful jewellery will be turning heads this summer as the team visits a range of equestrian events

T

his year has already been huge for Tarrag Naegel, having grown from a few pieces, cast from a single farrier’s nail, in 2016 to holding a competition for the naming of our new range – Spur of the Moment. This latest design joins the Farriers Loop, With A Twist, The Stirrup and, of course, classic Tarrag Naegel. Seeing my little business grow and grow makes me ever thankful for the moment of madness which “spurred” me on to design my own unique range. Tarrag Naegel has allowed me to meet so many wonderful people from across the globe and it makes me incredibly happy to see more and more customers return to add to their collection! I am continuing to develop ideas for the range and working tirelessly to improve my displays during events – making it easier for you all to see, touch and try on our jewellery. Customer experience is what it’s all about and that’s why I decided to get everyone involved in our naming competition for Spur of the Moment. Orders are already coming in thick and fast from as far away as the United States, as well as bespoke orders in Rose and Yellow Gold. I feel very privileged to be a part of the horse racing and eventing communities, and always enjoy taking Tarrag Naegel along to events across the country – from Blair Castle Horse Trials to Cartmel Races. However, during the winter months when these events are less frequent, I offer Tarrag Naegel parties! I’ll come along to your venue of choice with some bottles of bubbly and the jewellery (as well as a few fun games). Then all you have to do is gather any friends and family you’d like to join you and enjoy the evening. This is a fantastic opportunity to try before you buy and I will be armed with an order book should anyone like to purchase Tarrag Naegel. If you would like any more information about Tarrag Naegel, our products

and the services we offer, please don’t hesitate to contact me at tarragnaegel@btinternet.com. Or better yet, come and see me on our stand at any number of our events this year – I look forward to meeting you!  You can also see our range and learn more about the history of Tarrag Naegel and the little nail that inspired it all at www.tarragnaegel. com

teal, racing green and charcoal, are starting to be seen on traditional-style cabinetry, both outside and in, making a refreshing change from pale creams and sage greens. Smaller kitchens, in particular those that receive little natural light, often benefit from a splash of all-over colour. In these circumstances, white, cream or other neutrals can tend to look insipid and uninspiring, rather than delivering the light, large and bright effect they promise. As counter-intuitive as it may sound to suggest painting such a room with a rich or even dark tone (not forgetting the ceiling) it can actually unify and calm the space, and certainly makes a statement for the more daring dweller. Tall larder cupboards have been increasing in popularity recently due to their infinitely practical storage capabilities. Sometimes the old-fashioned solutions really are the best. Wall-mounted cupboards can be oppressive and do create an irritating dust and grease gap on top that serves no real purpose other than to inevitably stow and show unwanted gifts like pasta makers and cake stands that have been used all of once. Larder units take the pressure off wall space, providing opportunity for lighter-looking open shelves to be used instead for displaying beautiful crockery and stowing frequently used items in an easily accessible position that keeps the work surface clear. Thanks to Pinterest with its many styling tutorials, it has never been easier to know how to curate a simple shelf of cups or bowls to pleasing effect. Artfully grouping objects in odd rather than even numbers is more relaxing than an evenly spaced row or a symmetrical arrangement, which can read as stuffy. Varying the height of items clustered together also entertains the eye. Mixing in vintage homewares and potted plants, succulents or cacti is currently a la mode and there is nothing so effective as greenery to liven up a room. A clear work surface is the pinnacle of design and style and something of a holy grail in heavily used kitchens, and installing an instant boiling water tap is another fantastic and luxurious way to help achieve this uncluttered look. It gets rid of the demand for “later-life” borrowing, allowing kettle at least. These multi-functional taps people to borrow into their 70s, 80s and may seem like a luxury at the moment but even 90s, if you don’t want to be paying a are likely to become more standard due mortgage long into retirement, the earlier to their environmental credentials. Be practical. Interiors created with style over substance are not an enjoyable way to live so consider your lifestyle needs before your paint colours. Whether that means designating a space for muddy boots and coats or a gallery for children’s art work, factor in what you need from the start.

*

Reflect your love of horses in your kitchen by fitting leather strap handles to your cupboards and drawers. Reminiscent of tack, this type of handle has the added advantage of being soft, should you ever bang your hips on them, plus they won’t readily catch on your pockets as you brush past. If leather is not for you then vintage knobs and cup handles with a little patina, as opposed to the newlymade faux distressed kind, will lend authenticity, character and a sense of history to your kitchen.

models can produce hot, boiling, cold and filtered drinking water all in one and certain manufacturers also offer localised tanks that can supply all the hot water required for the whole kitchen. This is both energy and money-saving as the hot water doesn’t need to be pumped from the property’s main boiler, which could be far away, so there’s no running the tap for better to keep monthly repayments as ages waiting for it to warm up. low as possible. coverings), but also it looks and feels fabulous. Wood is probably the most vital ingredient for achieving the classic country kitchen aesthetic and when it is combined with other tactile materials, both raw and refined, the results are most interesting. Imagine an island topped with a grainy reclaimed wood surface, gently illuminated by a trio of cold, smooth porcelain or glass lighting fixtures, suspended on twisted fabric flex. Or mottled flagstones combined with sheeny, even sparkle-flecked granite. Marble is perhaps the ultimate material for durability and luxury when it comes to splash backs and worktops. There are also plenty of porcelain tiles on the market sporting surprisingly convincing marble effects. Either way, it looks at its most impressive surrounded by rich colour and metallic finishes. Warm-toned metals such as brass and copper can be used together in the same space these days, even though they are not an identical match, and do not need to be restricted to hardware or pots and pans. Taps and light fixtures are worthy of a warm, shiny glow too. Accessorising traditional joinery with these elements of industrial style works really well and it is this play between one texture contrasted against another that really breathes life into kitchen interiors.

Should overseas investors buy in the UK? For the overseas buyer the UK property market has long been seen as a safe haven for investment that can provide great returns. Many people were spooked by the uncertainty of exiting Europe, but it appears that these fears have subsided to an extent and there are some great reasons why now could be the right time to buy a property in the UK:

NEW Ranger® Diesel UTV from Polaris

Global brands remain world leaders by listening to customer comments on product improvements, whilst adding modern technical advances. Polaris’s new Ranger UTV (utility task vehicle) has certainly combined engineering excellence and user recommendations to keep it firmly at the head of this important sector. Technical machinery editor Graeme Russell reviews how Polaris Off-Road Vehicles EMEA have made their best-selling Ranger vehicle even better. Available for the first time for the British farming press to test drive over challenging conditions at the 4,000-acre Graythwaite Estate, Cumbria. Every imaginable work day condition was recreated to trial the new model’s pedigree. Driving through deep rutted lanes, steep stony inclines and wet boggy marshland, the press had a field day! Vice President and General Manager of Polaris Off-Road Vehicles

EMEA - Rodrigo Lourenco was present to launch the new Ranger Diesel, supported by technical engineers from its Polish manufacturing base. “We have upgraded almost every aspect of the existing Ranger Diesel model so that it’s tougher, more reliable and can tackle anything thrown its way. Now is your chance to see if the years of research and development worldwide satisfy your critical eye,” commented Mr. Lourenco at the launch. The first notable difference is that the Ranger sits higher on its wheels with an extra 20% of ground clearance

62  |  SUMMER 2019   Your Horse & Country Magazine

allowing 27.9 cm of suspension travel. A new one-piece chassis provides additional strength whilst improving the ride. The ‘carry all’ cargo tipping box has a carrying capacity of 430 kg payload and able to take a Euro sized pallet. Box sides have been increased in height to add additional load security.

DURABLE DEPENDABLE CAPABLE

Aggressive styling incorporates a modern look, which is carried through to the cab where extra legroom allows passengers to get in and out of the vehicle more easily. Exterior lights and indicators are incorporated into the bonnet design providing protection from inquisitive stock or overhanging branches. If good looks sell then this modern looking Ranger certainly should sell well! It takes a brave decision to replace the world’s most popular UTV with a new model and with 1.1 million sales worldwide since its launch 20 years ago, this new Ranger has to meet every expectation in Europe/Middle East/African markets as well as retain its 80% share of the home American sector. To help steer its way to successful world sales Polaris has revamped steering and suspension geometry. The turning radius has become 13% tighter and the electrically powered assisted steering: 19% quicker so drivers can operate longer with less fatigue. Driving the new Ranger through the Lake District‘s hills in challenging conditions using the engine braking system (EBS) with active control ADC, one felt safe and confident to take the next challenge on steep inclines with or without a load. Under the bonnet a new three cylinder Kubota engine provides 24.8 hp with 55.2 Nm of torque. A revised torque curve is a noticeable improvement as is a top road speed of 40 mph. In pulling terms, an on-demand all-wheel drive (AWD) system automatically engages all four wheels when more forward traction is required, reverting back to two-wheel drive as traction improves. With 1,134 kg of towing capacity and 720 kg payload

capacity, power transfer to forward motion is smooth and capable. To help power this improvement, a larger 55% CVT belt drive is incorporated, as is a new P 90 X centrifugal clutch design, which reduces gearing by 25%. Engine service intervals are increased to 200 hours to help reduce operating costs. Technically all new diesel-powered Polaris Ranger models have the same engine and drive performance, but customers can choose up to 1,400 cab combinations and 200 accessories to satisfy personal preference. For those who want luxury and comfort the Ranger Pro shield cab system offers three times better dust sealing than competitive models. Add to this, front and rear opening windows, glass doors, a heater-blower hot air system and Blue-tooth radio connection, operators can fiddle with controls all day long! A new 140 amp charging system provides readily available power for additional lighting and accessories. An integrated wiring harness makes connection easy with Polaris standard plug and play electric connections. If there is a UTV that has been designed to ‘fit all’ working conditions worldwide, then this Polaris Ranger Diesel must be it. For British farmers, the Lake District’s Graythwaite Estate provided the challenging conditions found on farms throughout the UK and the Ranger delivered. Polaris promised that this new Ranger is the perfect farm vehicle for ride, comfort, handling and manoeuvrability and under critical eyes they have built a winner. The Ranger Diesel is priced from £12,999.00 ex vat.

Summer’s simple

pleasures

Packing up a picnic, ice cream by the sea or exploring Britain’s heritage – Kathy Carter picks some of her favourite summer pastimes

Picnics Picnics are the epitome of British summertime heritage, aren’t they? However, it is the French to whom we should say “merci beaucoup” for the quirky word itself; they invented the picnic as we know it, with their “piquenique”, which originally referred to “an outing with food” and means to leisurely eat or “pick” at the dishes on offer. Of course, families have been enjoying outdoor meals for centuries, and historians have found references to the equivalent of picnics in other languages as early as 1748, and in English by around 1800. But like many “traditions”, it was the Victorians who popularised the British picnic, and they appear in paintings by Cezanne and Monet, and books by Dickens and Jane Austen. At Jamieoliver.com, the famous chef advises: “The keys to picnic perfection are simple: avoid store-bought stuff, and be well prepared; it’s well worth the effort of making your own.” For a traditional, British-style picnic, Jamie suggests taking a big basketful of these ultimate classics: Scotch eggs, sausage rolls, salads, homemade jamjar dressings, paté, ham hock, quiche or frittata, followed by an Eton mess dessert, washed down with a gin and tonic. Sounds delightful, doesn’t it!

 Action at Polo in the Park, London. Right: strawberries and champagne at Wimbledon

Super sporting events Now you have your picnic perfectly primed, you need somewhere to take it – and where better than one of the UK’s most exciting sporting events? Wimbledon, the world’s oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament, is a true British institution. First organised in 1876 at the All-England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club, now the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, the event consists of five main tournaments held on Centre Court, with its famous retractable roof and trained hawk, which scares away unwelcome birds.

There’s a smart, all-white dress code for competitors which aims to draw attention to skill, rather than sartorial flair, but spectators can wear what they like. Although the early-July timeframe does mean that cool summer dressing is key, the audience does tend to wear smarter attire for the high-profile games, such as summery dresses and heels for the ladies, and lightweight suits for the men. Don’t forget to look out for the royals in the Wimbledon Royal Box! Incidentally, for public safety, you won’t be allowed to bring in a hard-sided

Seaside holidays A stalwart of our childhoods, beach holidays are a wonderful British tradition. They’re enjoyed today by so many of us because everywhere within the UK is relatively close to the beach – the residents of Lichfield in Staffordshire are reportedly the furthest away, at 84 miles from the nearest point on the coast. However, in the past, it took more than a couple of hours to travel to the beach, as the first stretch of motorway in the UK, the Preston Bypass, wasn’t launched until 1958; so motoring was a slower affair!

 Butlin’s Resort on the beachfront in Bognor Regis, West Sussex The Butlin’s resorts arguably pioneered the seaside holiday in the 1950s and 1960s, even though Billy Butlin opened his first camp at Skegness as far back as

container, such as a picnic hamper or cool box, and you’re only allowed to carry one bag; so take a downsized version of your favourite snacks instead! And look out for the culinary stalwart of the event – delicious strawberries and cream. If polo floats your boat, there is a range of events to spectate at every summer, including The Cartier Queen’s Cup, held throughout May and June at Guards Polo Club; London’s Polo in the Park with its simplified “City Polo” rules, held in June in Fulham; Polo On the Beach at Cornwall’s Watergate Bay in June; and the Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup, played in June to decide the British Open Polo Champions, and held at Cowdray Park. And for eventing fans, there’s the Festival of British Eventing, held in August at Gatcombe Park, home of HRH The Princess Royal and her family, which includes the prestigious Open Championships. At equestrian events, taking immense picnics is generally positively encouraged!

1936. The brand created beautiful gardens that many holidaymakers would not have access to at home, and became famous for its Redcoats. A Butlin’s trip in this era was quoted as costing an average man’s weekly pay, and many families accessed package holidays like this through paid annual leave, thanks to the Holiday Pay Act 1938. Today, the traditional seaside holiday or day-trip is very much alive and kicking, with amusement arcades, seafood shacks with cockles and whelks, deck chairs, fish and chip shops, ice cream parlours, buckets and spades and end-of-pier shows offered up and down the coast. 

One fantastically British part of seaside life is the brightly coloured beach hut. According to the website seasidehistory. co.uk, they sit alongside ice creams, sandcastles and the unreliable British weather as part of the quintessential experience of summer by the seaside. Vintage beach huts may originate from the 1930s, echoing pre-war-style traditions. Today, the coastal holiday economy is worth tens of billions of pounds, helped by the “Sloanes by the sea” phenomenon, which sees wealthy city dwellers purchasing holiday homes. In its Best of the UK Seaside guide, The Guardian newspaper recommends seaside locations Broadstairs in Kent, Millport in Ayrshire, Bangor in County Down, Budleigh Salterton in Devon, Craster in Northumberland, Solva in Pembrokeshire, Scarborough in North Yorkshire and Arnside in Cumbria as some of the top seaside destinations to visit in the UK.

 Brightly coloured beach huts in Scarborough, North Yorkshire

Heritage and history Of course, we’re blessed with a multitude of important heritage attractions in Britain, with the cream of the crop including Bodiam Castle in Sussex, London’s Temple Church, Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire, Leeds Castle in Kent, Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, and the Beamish Museum in County Durham, according to triphistoric.com. Wherever one’s based in the UK, there’s a heavenly historical treasure waiting to be explored just a train ride or car drive away, from country homes to castles. In his article The History of Castles (historic-uk.com), Ben Johnson explains that castles and fortified houses can be found all over Britain; impressive, oppressive, dramatic and romantic. “They started off as fortified Bronze or Iron Age forts,” he writes. “Some hill forts were occupied and used by the Romans, while the arrival of the Normans in 1066 led to a new age of construction, with wooden or stone ‘keeps’ set on artificial mounds.

 Bodiam Castle in Sussex and, top, Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire From the 14th century onwards, castles began to combine their defensive role with that of a fine residence.” The organisation English Heritage looks after over 400 historic monuments, while

the National Trust cares for a range of treasures from coastlines and beaches, to archaeological remains and over 500 historic houses. Both organisations offer cost-effective membership packages. 

Traditional British summer treats It’s the time of year for buttered broccoli, watercress sandwiches, tender asparagus, rhubarb crumble, gooseberry fool, strawberries and cream and elderflower cordial. (Probably not consumed all together, of course!) All are fantastic, seasonal summer foodie staples. In addition to the array

of produce available nationally, there are many regional specialities relished in Britain, such as Cumberland and Lincolnshire sausage, Cornish pasties, Lancashire hotpot, the North East’s pease pudding, Melton Mowbray pies, Yorkshire puddings, Derbyshire’s Bakewell tart, Berkshire’s Eton mess, Scotland’s scones, and even London’s jellied eels! Barbecues

Burning the bangers on the “barbie”… what could be more British? Well, a lot as it happens, as the barbecue is a pastime that, while popular here, originated much further afield. The book Planet Barbecue (Workman Publishing, 2010) puts the barbecue’s origins as far back as when our human ancestor homo erectus began cooking meat with fire about 1.8 million years ago, but basting meat over a grill is said to have begun in the Caribbean. The word “barbecue” apparentlly comes from an Indo-Caribbean tribe called the Taino, whose word for grilling is “barbacoa”. The Americans developed the concept during their colonial period, and other territories added their own flourishes down the years. Over here, we tend to refer to barbecuing as a fast-cooking process done directly over high heat, while In American-English usage barbecuing tends to refer to a slow process using indirect heat or hot smoke, more similar to roasting. Wherever you enjoy a barbecue, there’s no denying it is now a great summer tradition, stereotypically loved by dads brandishing cooking utensils and getting back to their homo erectus roots as they stare into the flames.

Gastric ulcers and feeding for weight gain Measuring out

Adding water

Soaking

Joanna Palmer, Equine Nutritionist at Allen & Page Quality Horse Feeds

Gastric ulcers or Equine Gastric Ulceration Syndrome (EGUS) was once considered a problem that primarily affected racehorses, but recent research suggests that 37% of leisure horses and 63% of performance horses now suffer from the condition. Joanna Palmer, nutritionist for Allen & Page Horse Feeds explains how best to feed and manage ulcer prone horses and ponies to promote digestive health and aid weight gain. Gastric ulcers are erosions of the stomach lining caused by exposure to gastric acid. Horses with EGUS can suffer pain and discomfort that leads to changes in temperament as well as poor performance and weight loss. Alongside appropriate veterinary treatment, careful management to reduce stress and provide as natural a lifestyle as possible is vital. A suitable feeding plan that meets the specific nutritional needs of ulcer prone horses will support a healthy digestive system and help to prevent reoccurrence in the future. For horses with gastric issues research suggests providing a diet with as low a starch and sugar level as possible is highly beneficial (preferably less than 2g per kg body weight a day, but ideally less than 1g per kg body weight per meal). Keeping a low starch and sugar level can be helped by avoiding competition or more traditional feeds which will often contain ingredients such as molasses and whole cereal grains. It is also important to ensure that every horse has constant access to grazing or forage because this will keep the stomach full and reduce exposure of the lining to the ulcer causing acid. Feeding forage or chaff before exercise will form a mat of fibre which can help stop acid splashing into the upper portion of the stomach that is more prone to ulceration. The process of chewing also promotes the production of saliva, which being alkaline is the horse’s natural defence against gastric acid. Soothe & Gain is a high calorie, low starch and low sugar soaked feed, suitable for horses prone to gastric ulcers. With a high calorie/energy level it is ideal for horses in harder work and those that need to put on or maintain weight and condition. The energy that Soothe & Gain supplies is from fibre and oil, providing an excellent source of slow release, stamina-giving energy. Being whole cereal grain free and molasses free it is low in starch and low sugar, ideal for those that react negatively to high starch diets. The fibre sources in Soothe & Gain are also high in Beta-Glucans that form a gel like consistency, which helps to moderate the transit speed of feed through the stomach and intestines, meaning the stomach remains fuller for longer.

Ready to eat

Soothe & Gain contains antacids, a probiotic and a blend of prebiotics to help support healthy digestion. As well as being fully balanced with vitamins and minerals, this feed also contains a careful selection of herbs: mint, nettle, dandelion and fenugreek for their well-known properties and ensures Soothe & Gain is highly palatable. For more information on Soothe & Gain and feeding your ulcer prone horse visit: www.allenandpage.co.uk or call the award winning nutrition helpline on 01362 822902

Trust in tea tree to soothe this summer

T

he weather is warming up and the bitey bugs and flies are amassing in the air. Like with us humans, some pets may react to these nibbles and some do not. I tend to get huge, itchy bumps from any insect bite or sting. One of my horses, Thai, a 24-year-old thoroughbred, is like me and reacts to bites. Previously, I kept the horses on water meadows where we were inundated with small horseflies, so Thai was robed in a full neck fly rug and face mask 24/7, to help protect him. Whatever the weather, I wore a long-sleeved shirt when I was down with the horses, otherwise I’d get bitten. Oddly, Molly the mule never got bitten and never has a cloud of flies around her. I’m not sure if the biters just don’t like mule blood, or whether her sticky-up fur helps to protect her!  Thai in his fly rug

Over the years of having Thai, I have tried many a commercial fly repellent. However, his sensitive skin always reacted to the ingredients. He would get swell marks wherever he was sprayed, so I now make my own fly spray with natural oils, water and a squirt of soap (to help the oils emulsify). The oils I’ve found that help are tea tree, citronella, neem, sandalwood and aloe vera to name just a few. Tea tree is a great natural oil that people have used for hundreds of years for its antibacterial and antifungal properties. Some also believe it helps to repel fleas and ticks. We have a range of tea tree products for your pets and horses, including shampoos, featuring a refreshing non-rinse tea tree and peppermint

shampoo. Tea tree oils and sprays, which are easy to use, target any sore areas in the manes or tails of sweet itch sufferers. The popular sheath cleaner with tea tree is a thick gel that is perfect for the job. Fresh Frog, a product we have found is perfect for our slightly flat-soled cob, is ideal for all-year-round use to help keep the sole and frog healthy. We use Soothitch cream on our animals and ourselves whenever we get bitten, stung, or suffer heat rash or sunburn. It’s a thick cream with tea tree and lavender oils, which is just applied to the affected area for soothing relief from the itch.  To see our full range of products, visit our website www.animal-health. co.uk

The horses did mainly roadwork through January, and I introduced some schooling and jumping work towards the end of the month. I started their fast work early February, which I do every third day through the season except after competing when they do not do fast work until the fifth day. Even at my ripe old age I love having lessons and striving to improve! I have been to Ferdi Eilberg for some dressage lessons with Bobby, and have also had a couple of jumping lessons with Ros Morgan, who I found very helpful. It was a fab to start the season at Tweseldown where Bobby jumped a great double clear in the OI, having done a reasonable dressage test in a gale! I just took him quietly cross country, and had planned to be more competitive the following weekend at Pontispool… but, alas, heavy rain forced Pontispool to cancel,

which was such a shame for everyone. Bobby then progressed successfully to four star level having a great weekend at Belton Horse Trials where he felt brave and confident. Unfortunately I had just had my neck treated and it felt a bit weak, so I had to turn a circle after a sunken road fence to be totally correct and in balance for the following fence – and got 20 penalties for a technical refusal, but Bobby didn’t do anything wrong! His next event was the four star two weeks later at Burnham Market. Sadly, he felt uncharacteristically flat in the dressage and showjumping, so I decided not to run him cross country. I gave him a quiet week, during which he picked up, so ran him the following weekend at Bicton. He was definitely feeling better as he was uncharacteristically jolly! But I had a fabulous ride cross country, which was great. The lovely Chatsworth was nearly brilliant but sadly I fell off, landing embarrassingly on my feet. Bobby had done a great dressage test in the CCI4*-S and jumped a lovely clear showjumping round in sticky conditions. I set off competitively only to make a mistake early on by approaching a fence with a drop on too free a stride. Bobby sensibly tried to chip in an extra stride and rather lay all over the fence. I fell off on to my feet and luckily Bobs didn’t fall over.

I will take him XC schooling at Rosamund Farm before Tattersalls, which is his next four star - it is a super schooling venue in Dorset with a huge variety of fences. It was lovely at the bigger events through the spring season to meet up with Emily. We parked and stabled beside each other, like the good old days! Tilly, my five-year-old homebred, was ready to start eventing mid-April. She has been lovely to work with, taking everything on board confidently. She is quite forward-thinking, so I have been gradually working on encouraging her to wait while working and jumping. She did her first ever BE event at Bicton (BE90 HC). It is such a milestone to get to this stage with a homebred, especially as she led the dressage and then went on to jump a double clear… hooray! (The only problem was me... I missed out a fence so we were eliminated! Whoops!). Tilly went straight on to do the BE100 at Port Eliot the following week where she again led the dressage and jumped another double clear, rather wobbly at times, but she is naturally very brave and scopey – clever girl! Howick BE100 (what a wonderful event) was her next competition where again she performed beautifully except for having the first showjump down. I am running her at Pontispool at the end of May after which she will have a well-deserved holiday to let all she has learnt sink in, plus the ground could be getting firm, which, especially for young horses, can cause a lot of harm. Tilly has two sponsors - Hannah Lord and Jane Hamilton – and hopefully she will continue to make them proud!

KEEPING UP WITH THE KINGS

What a start to the season it has been, the disappointment of cancelled events mixed with some great results. Oasby was my first event of the season, a good opening event for Dre, Rosie and my first back with the awesome Cooley Currency (Current). Sam Ecroyd did some great work with him last season and it was really noticeable, but steady cross country times pushed us out of any potential placings. After a 3am start we set off on the Sunday for our second day and were about two hours down the road when we were notified that, unfortunately, due to the amount of rain they had to cancel the event. The following weekend we went to Lincoln and Lord Beresford’s Vamonos put in a stunning performance to finish second in his last BE100 before his move up to Novice. Rosie did a lovely double clear in the Intermediate novice, with a few time penalties, to finish in the top ten. A pole down in the showjumping for Current, Hobby and Izzy meant that the cross country could be used a-a steady confidence-giver rather than pushing them too hard. Our only slight drama was that my lovely puppy Arthur, in the excitement of arriving at the show, clambered onto the dashboard and stepped on the isolator switch... all unbeknown to us! Twelve hours and one call to the breakdown service later, the problem was discovered and we were finally on our way home! It was then on to Belton. I am so disappointed that this was the last

time we will be competing there, it was always such a lovely event. Current, Dre and Brook all competed in the advanced section. It was fantastic to be back riding Brookleigh at the top level – he was a superstar from start to finish, having a nice steady cross country to finish 11th. Both Current and Dre gave me a lovely rides and finished second and third place, which are lovely memories to take away with me. Hobby, Rosie, Marco and Georgie then went to Weston Park. It had been raining horrendously and the organisers did a great job to keep the event running despite the conditions. Unfortunately it was not our best showing! The going was quite deep and Georgie was not feeling overly happy, so we decided to not risk her confidence and withdrew her before the jumping. It was Marco’s first Novice and approaching an unusual-looking fence on the cross country a table with two big teddy bears either side he became very spooky and started backing off from a long way out, leaving us at an angle from which we couldn’t approach the fence safely. I circled away, re-presented and he bravely jumped it – I was still very pleased with him as each event builds his experience. Both Hobby and Rosie were competing in their first Intermediate section and both had a problem at the coffin fence. The fences in and out were two narrow elephant heads, which were bright blue in the gloom of the wooded area they were situated in, and both of them were so busy looking at the elephants that they couldn’t then jump them! After representing they both jumped at the second

attempt and this can again be chalked onto the experience board! We then trucked over to Norfolk where Dre then produced a lovely dressage and double clear at Burnham Market to put us into fourth place in the CCIS4* - I couldn’t have asked for a better final run before Badminton! After Hobby’s little blip at Weston I dropped him back to Novice at Kelsall to regain a bit of confidence, which worked wonders for him. Georgie did a good test and a double clear to come fourth – we still have a bit to work on together to pull out the dressage score I know she is capable of. Penguin (MBF Arctic Emperor), who my father bought at the Going for Gold sales in Goresbridge in November, completed his first BE90. I was so proud of him! He took everything in his stride and it was a great first outing. I truly believe he has a big future ahead of him. After the unfortunate abandonment of Bradwall, it was then on to Aston le Walls, with Hobby moving back up to Intermediate. However, on the cross country he tripped going down the bank into the water, which sent both of us tumbling and we were both drenched! Poor Hobby. So far he has not had much luck at this level but his time will come – he is so capable. Marco then went to Chatsworth to compete in his first CCI S2* and was brilliant! An unlucky pole in the showjumping pushed him down from second to seventh but I could not be happier with him! Mary & Emily with Arthur, the culprit (photo: Liz Knowler)

KEEPING UP WITH THE KINGS

Emily at Badminton It was an honour to compete at Badminton Horse Trials again this year. Unfortunately, it didn’t go quite according to plan, but luckily we’re safe and sound and live to fight another day! We travelled down to Badminton on the Tuesday, so I could take Dre for a gentle hack around the park that afternoon and get him nicely settled in before the trot up on the Wednesday. The stables at Badminton are just stunning and they put me where Mum used to be stabled, which was a very nice touch! Wednesday, being trot up day, consisted of Dre having a leg stretch in the morning and then lots of bathing and beautifying before the vets inspection in the afternoon. Jess, my wonderful head girl, did a superb job as usual and turned him out immaculately. It’s lovely to have such prestigious trot ups at these big internationals as it allows our wonderful grooms to showcase their incredible skills and receive the recognition they deserve! Dre was fit and healthy, and flew through the trot up with no complications.

I had drawn number 21, which meant we did dressage Thursday late morning. Dre is a fairly relaxed character, so I didn’t have to do a huge amount of work before his test. However, he can become a little bit tense, therefore my plan was the same as a normal three-day event - work him once first thing, bring him back to the stable for a break and then get on him for my test. My dressage trainer, Richard White, arrived first thing on Thursday to help give Dre a pre-test work. He then also helped me do my final warm-up before my test. Dre was feeling fantastic all morning, the best he’s ever felt, but when I went in for my test I felt if anything I had worked him a little too much, as he became a little too quiet in the arena. Due to this, a few uncharacteristic mistakes crept in, which was a real shame. I was still really pleased with him and how he coped in such an atmospheric environment. We scored 31.7 which, considering we had four big mistakes, was still very respectable and we were in 21st position after dressage. It was very tight scoring as there were 11 combinations on a 31 mark, so it was all to play for on the cross country.

KEEPING UP WITH THE KINGS

Friday was a quiet day, I worked Dre in the morning and then he relaxed for the rest of the day while I walked the course numerous times and got in the zone for the following day. The cross country course was extremely big and bold and there were plenty of questions from start to finish. The jumping efforts were relentless, so we knew the horses would find it a real fitness challenge. Saturday morning Dre went for a nice long graze - I feel it’s good to give their legs a nice stretch the morning of cross country day to give them some light exercise without actually riding them. I got on Dre half an hour before my cross country time - it’s quite a long walk to the start so I gave him a trot and a canter once I was in the warm-up, then popped him over a few of the warm-up fences to test our gears and he was feeling great. The start officials let you know four minutes before your start time, when you are then allowed to make your way up to the main arena and starting box. As I set out of the start box to number one, Dre didn’t feel his usual feisty self but I kicked him on and we had good few jumps over the next fences. He still wasn’t feeling 100% himself but, nevertheless, he jumped the Savills Staircase, the Joules corners and the Shogun Hollow straight and honestly.

We then galloped onto the footbridge, but still when Dre was galloping in between the fences, he wasn’t pulling and drawing as he usually would. He was feeling like this as I came around to the footbridge when, unfortunately, I made a mistake as a rider and we ended up coming too close to the footbridge. It resulted in a very “up and down” jump over the fence and he landed on the back rail. Luckily these days all railed oxers are fixed with frangible pins, which are fantastic as they prevent serious injury to both horse and rider. Luckily Dre and I walked away completely unscathed. Dre had a very good cool down when he got back to the stables and got trotted up to check that no minor injuries had occurred, which thankfully hadn’t. It was a real shame to not have the Badminton we were hoping for, but with horses things certainly don’t always go to plan and I am just extremely thankful that Dre is fit to carry on. I am planning on giving him a nice run round the OI at Bishop Burton and then he heads to Bramham for the CCI4*-L Under 25 National Championships, which we won last year. So fingers crossed we have a good couple of runs and get back on track!

Mary at Badminton Badminton was as a fabulous event as ever, except for Emily and Dargun’s misfortune. As well as helping Em, I fulfilled my role of being Mitsubishi’s Ambassador, getting involved in the Mitsubishi Motors Cup. I did a competitors’ course walk on the Tuesday and tried to fill the riders with plenty of positive thoughts. I joined them for their reception that evening, and then did the prize-giving on Wednesday, in front of Badminton House after the main event’s first vets inspection. It is such a great competition for the more amateur riders and I hope, with Mitsubishi sadly finishing its sponsorship of Badminton, that the new sponsors see fit to continue this wonderful competition.

Mary in the yard With the extraordinarily dry weather earlier in the year it was great to be able to get my Logic roller working in February, making the fields all smooth. I also use Logic’s spring tine Pro-Harrow to pull up the old grass and encourage new growth, and the rotary topper to keep the sour grass and docks at bay. Mitsubishi generously replaced my long wheel base Shogun with a Shogun Sport - it is very spacious and drives beautifully. The Mitsubishi Motors Masterclass at the Unicorn Centre went smoothly, and I linked it in with a photoshoot for Blue Cross for whom I am Equine Ambassador.

KEEPING UP WITH THE KINGS

A fun evening at River Cottage, where I was after-dinner speaker, was well supported. The meal was delicious, and the following day the majority of the people came to my yard for a visit and watched me jump Bobby. The two brood mares were expanding fast, but as Tess got near her due date I started to think she ought to be bigger. A scan from my vet showed she sadly was not in foal anymore - she had obviously slipped it without me realising...such a shame. But she was just coming into season, so have artificially inseminated her with Van Gogh semen again and her pregnancy scan is on Friday - fingers crossed. Zara is due the second week of June. She is very large and is bagging up well, so no chance of her not being pregnant! The youngstock have had a good winter and, amazingly, I managed not to lose my Ariat wellies once when I feed and check them each morning! They were having Baileys Yearling Cubes and Marksway High Fibre HorseHage each day, but now the grass is coming through they are just having Yearling Cubes, which I will gradually change to Stud Balancer as the grass increases. I have just had the two two-year-old colts gelded - it is good time of the year to do this, when the mud has dried up but before the flies come out in force. I’m thrilled to say that Amerigo Saddlery have started to sponsor me. They make the most gorgeously classy saddles, comfortable for horse and rider. Phil Lowe, their saddle fitter, has been down a couple of times to make sure the saddles fit perfectly.

Walkaround checks... ...for horseboxes 1 Check speed limiter/tachograph calibration plaque and seals, and any illumination. 2 Check the condition of the handbrake. 3 Look for missing reflectors. 4 Check wheel nuts for security. 5 Use your vehicle regularly – this helps maintain braking efficiency by preventing seizure. Check tyre tread depth exceeds 1mm, and tyre pressures are correct. 6 Check to see if the vehicle stands “square”, and listen for knocking sounds when in motion. 7 Check for oil leaks, and that the fuel cap has a seal fitted. 8 Check that no black smoke is coming from the exhaust pipe. 9 Check that your lights are intact, and the right colour.

...for trailers

Having your own transport unlocks a world of opportunities, in terms of training and competition with your horse – here, we cover some of the most important points concerning owning and driving a horsebox, as well as towing a trailer. INSURANCE You will of course need horsebox insurance – look out for a more costeffective “limited mileage policy” if you are doing less than around 5,000 miles a year. If you’re towing a trailer, your car policy will cover the trailer for third party liability only – but you will need separate insurance for theft or damage to the trailer itself, as well as additional breakdown cover and

roadside assistance. Some policies include the organisation of alternative transport for the horses in the event of a breakdown that can’t be repaired. If you intend to use the vehicle for hire or reward you must tell the insurers, and check your cover. Your horse’s own insurer can advise about whether the horse is covered for injury during transit.

1 Check the connections are secure, and in good condition. 2 Check the jockey wheel is secure, and operational. 3 Check whether towing mirrors are required, or would assist. 4 Check that access doors are secured, and glass panels are in good condition. 5 Check for general condition and security, e.g. that the breakaway cable is properly attached. 6 Look for functional reflectors. 7 Check that all lights work. 8 Check the exterior spare wheel and carrier are functional and secure. 9 Check that the tyres and wheels are fixed, secure and in good condition; make sure tyre tread depth exceeds 1.6mm. 

A GUIDE TO DRIVING LICENCES FOR EQUESTRIAN VEHICLES A 3.5-tonne horsebox Anyone over the age of 17 with a Cat B (standard car) licence can drive a 3.5-tonne horsebox without the need to take a further test. A 3.5 - 7.5-tonne horsebox (also applies to a towing vehicle and trailer exceeding 3.5 tonnes) To drive a horsebox between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, if you passed your car test after 1st January 1997, you need a Cat C1 licence. (If you acquired your Cat B, or standard car licence, before this date, you are exempt from requiring a Cat C1 licence.) If you also want to be able to tow a trailer up to 0.75 tonnes, the Category (Cat) C1+E would enable you to do this. (See also “Towing a trailer”, below). A horsebox over 7.5 tonnes To drive a horsebox over 7.5 tonnes, you would need the Cat C licence, regardless of the year you gained your standard car licence. Towing a trailer If you obtained your Cat B licence prior to 1 January 1997, you are eligible to

tow light trailers behind your vehicle, as long as your vehicle’s MAM (maximum authorised mass, that includes car and trailer) does not exceed 3.5 tonnes. If you obtained your licence later, you must gain a Cat B+ E licence to only tow a trailer (you cannot also drive a large horsebox on the same licence).

A SUMMARY OF THE TYPES OF DRIVING LICENCE Cat B – standard car licence. Cat C – for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, with or without accompanying trailers up to 750kg MAM. With a Category C licence, you will be eligible to drive rigid vehicles over 3,500kg, up to 32 tonnes. With this licence, you automatically also have a Cat C1 licence. Cat C1 – for vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes MAM, with trailers up to 750kg. Cat C1+E – for drivers who want to tow a trailer with a C1 vehicle, e.g. a larger horsebox. Category C+E – This licence allows the

driver to drive goods vehicles in excess of 3.5 tonnes, with trailers exceeding 750 MAM. Anyone who has a standard car licence can take the appropriate training and exams to get a higher category licence, as described above. Visit gov.uk/adding-higher-categoriesto-your-driving-licence for more information.

Eight top tips

BOSS 35 1 Always take the horse’s passport on board. (A legal requirement). 2 With smaller vehicles like a 3.5-tonne horsebox, it is easier to inadvertently go over the payload (e.g. the total weight you can carry). The payload for a 3.5-tonne vehicle is usually up to 1,200kg, for example, which you can check with the coachbuilder or seller. 3 Be aware of your vehicle’s MAM (maximum authorised mass). This is the designated weight – so, 3.5 tonnes means a MAM totalling a combination of the vehicle, the passengers and horses, and equipment. Ideally, note your horse’s weight from any vet’s visits, using their weighbridge. (Payload is the difference between the Vehicle Unladen Weight (VUW) and the MAM.) 4 There is a requirement for a Standard National Operator’s Licence for anyone who uses a vehicle (including a transport vehicle and a horsebox trailer) of more than 3.5 tonnes for the business of carrying livestock. (If the journey is in connection with your own trade or business, a Restricted Operators Licence is needed.) Transport of your own horses, if they’re kept as a hobby where the income does not significantly exceed the expenditure, is exempt. 5 If your vehicle has a GPW (Gross Plated Weight) of over 3.5 tonnes and is used in connection with a trade or business, you need a tachograph. If the vehicle has a GPW of under 7.5 tonnes and is used for private use, you do not need a tachograph. If the vehicle has a GPW of over 7.5 tonnes irrespective of private or business use, you DO need a tachograph. 6 VOSA, the government agency responsible for vehicle safety and environmental standards, recommends that we carry out regular, basic checks before using a horsebox. (See “Drivers’ walkaround checks”). VOSA performs regular roadside checks throughout the entire GB road network. 7 If you had planned to use the right-hand lane of a motorway, be aware that a horsebox over 3.5 and up to 7.5 tonnes with a speed limiter; a horsebox exceeding 7.5 tonnes; and a vehicle and trailer, are NOT permitted to use the offside lane of a motorway. 8 All goods vehicles with a gross weight in excess of 3.5 tonnes are required to have a functional speed limiter. The set speed of a limiter depends on the age of the vehicle. 

WHAT ABOUT HARD SHOULDERS ON MOTORWAYS?

motorway signs (e.g. if the motorway hard shoulder is in use as an extra running lane.) If you need to stop, you should ideally leave the motorway at the next exit, or pull into a service area. If you cannot do so, such as in a true emergency, you should pull onto the hard shoulder and stop as far to the left as possible, switch on your hazards, keep any animals inside the vehicle, leave via the nearside doors and wait on the embankment. (Of course, call all relevant emergency and rescue services. A roadside emergency telephone will usefully pinpoint your position). You should never unload horses from a vehicle or trailer on any road without the police present. If you are in a situation on a motorway whereby either you feel you must stop on the hard shoulder – for example, in an emergency whereby the horses are distressed, or if you break down – you can ring 101 to contact your local police force. If you feel you need an escort, they can decide whether this is feasible, and in this case could use the hard shoulder to escort you to the nearest exit. n

Better by Design A 3.5-tonne horsebox without compromise – high quality, high performance and superior design – was the goal for Boss Horseboxes’ Paul Williams and aerospace engineer Clive Ecroyd when they drew on a combined 50 years’ experience in horsebox building to create the Boss 35. Carrying up to 1.25 tonnes, the twohorse Boss 35 is aerodynamically fuel efficient, loaded with features and does not rot, while beautiful styling means it looks good too – quality without compromise. Boss believes many drivers will opt for 3.5-tonne horseboxes in the future as fuel becomes more expensive and because they can be driven on a car licence without the extra requirements surrounding 7.5-tonne vehicles. Designed to be the best 3.5-tonne horsebox on the market and crafted by a team of skilled coachbuilders delivering quality workmanship, Boss wants you to be as proud of your horsebox as its creators are. Do you know your payload before you drive to an event?

It is very easy to overload a 3500kg horsebox, and even a 7500kg one, as most people don’t take into account passengers, tack, water, hay, and these add to the payload considerably. For example, an empty 3500kg horsebox normally weighs about 2500kg, leaving 1000kg for the driver and passenger, horse, tack, etc. Many of these horseboxes are stalled for two horses, and that can be a big problem. If you are overloaded and have an accident, your insurance will be invalidated and you could be facing a number of offences, both overloading and licence ones. In recent years, the DVSA has found that more than 80% of LCV’s stopped on the roadside on suspicion of overloading, are in fact overweight.

Why Uprating You have a limited payload capacity and wish to carry an extra horse or equipment. You don’t want to buy a newer, bigger horsebox so you can save money by converting your current vehicle. You want to avoid a large fine by DVSA.

What to do if you are overloaded. The first thing is to weigh your horsebox FULLY LOADED with your horse(s), tack, water, food, and passengers so that you know where you stand. Remember to weigh each axle individually as you may find that whilst you may be under the Gross Vehicle Weight, you have actually overloaded the rear axle. This is very common in lightweight horseboxes. Fortunately SvTech can help, and is keen to promote its uprating service for lightweight horseboxes (3500kg), whereby the horsebox can gain an extra 200-300kg in payload. This provides vital payload capability when carrying an extra horse and/ or tack and offers peace of mind for the owner.

SvTech has carried out extensive work and testing on lightweight models and has covered uprates for most lightweight vehicles. It is worth noting that some uprates require modifications or changes to the vehicle’s braking, tyres and/or suspension, for which SvTech provides a simple purpose-built suspension assister kit. This will take between 1-2 hours for you to fit. Your horsebox will then go for a formal inspection to bring it into the ‘Goods’ category, and, depending on the vehicle’s age, may also require fitment of a speed limiter, for which there are one or two options. Most importantly, vehicles registered after May 2002 must be fitted with manufacturer’s ABS, if going above 3500kg.

We can start the ball rolling by asking customers to fill in an enquiry form and send it back with photos of the Horsebox plate, the weight ticket and Registration Document.

Practically

perfect

Summer trends don’t always adapt well to equestrian life, writes Kathy Carter, but some of this year’s offerings can certainly bring some style to the stableyard!

M

aybe equestrian and countryside enthusiasts are too practical to be enthused by some of the high street’s summer trends – such as off-theshoulder tops, Eighties colourways and styling, fringing everywhere (from shoes to undies), and multi-coloured tie-dye creations. But some of this summer’s offerings have piqued our interest! Keeping track of trends isn’t always about “spend, spend, spend” – it can be about decoding what's featured in the designer stores so you can adapt it to your budget and style – or digging out older items that had been relegated to the “dated” box, but which are now bang on trend once more. A theme running through many ladies’ lines this season is reportedly

“real women” – clothes encouraging empowerment and expression, and dressing positively for yourself, allowing you to feel confident and comfortable. Here are a few of the more workable fashion trends we have seen this summer:

Bermuda shorts

Yes! A practical shorts style that is flattering, as seen from designers like Anna Sui. From coloured versions by the jeans manufacturers, to cotton and linen workwear versions, board-style shorts are a welcome fashion statement for ladies. Horse owners don’t often want too much flesh on display, for fear of getting bitten by insects or injured by a horse, but a longer-style pair of shorts allows

104  |  SUMMER 2019   Your Horse & Country Magazine – FASHION

for air circulation, and means we feel less exposed. Ideal for: Summer yard duties – pair with short yard boots or paddock boots for your horsey chores, then swap for flip flops or sandals for the rest of your day’s excursions.

Athleisure

Although the word itself is slightly cringeworthy, the concept is not – in fact, horse riders have been adopting this trend now for a few years, with the new type of pullon riding tights, akin to fitness leggings. This summer’s athleisure is quite cyclinginspired (and spring’s cycling shorts are definitely here to stay, whether we like them or not).

 Throw-on dresses and longer skirts are among this season’s must-haves

 Pikeur Ladies Gia Grip Athleisure Riding Tights in Bordeaux from Country & Stable Ideal for: Everything! We’re just pleased that the “breeches and trainers” look, when you pop to the shops after your riding lesson, is now on trend. As suggested in our shopping feature, you can wear your riding tights out and about (and at the gym) with pride, as they’re a multi-functional piece of kit.

Demure silhouettes

 Bermuda shorts from Anna Sui at New York Fashion Week

What does “demure silhouette” mean? Longer line skirts, buttoned-up dresses for the office, covered shoulders, tailored jackets – everything our grandmothers would be proud of. The look is feminine but covered up, a nod to the aforementioned drive for empowerment, and dressing for oneself. Ideal for: Workwear for the 21stcentury woman who likes to wear something smart, and harks back to past generations’ penchant for comfortable, chunky shoes with square heels or wedges, and a sensible cardigan.  FASHION – Your Horse & Country Magazine SUMMER 2019   |  105

Throw-on dresses

“Throw-on” dresses are the floaty maxi-style dresses that are stylish but unrevealing, and therefore hide a multitude of sins. Often with floral or broderie anglaise styling, they’re pretty and romantic; definitely feminine, but also super-casual with an “I just threw this on” vibe. Some of the styles have a distinct Victoriana or prairie-dress look about them. If you can’t picture the look, imagine the children and young women from TV’s Little House on the Prairie, set in 19th-century America – think full skirts, demure collars, puffy sleeves and lacy edging – pretty, but the kind of dress you could ride your horse or milk your cow in! Update the trend with leather belts and edgy earrings if you want to look less pioneer woman and more modern trend-setter. Ideal for: Throwing into a weekend or post-stables bag. They are made to look crumpled and slightly dishevelled, and look especially on-trend with casual, riding-hat hair.

Utility wear

This may still be burgeoning, and could explode later on in the autumn, but the utility trend is growing. Think boiler suits, combat trousers, oversized macs and utilitarian jackets, as per the catwalks of Balmain, Givenchy and Hermès. For inspiration, think Gwen Stefani and All

 This dress? I just threw it on... top right: Holebrook Sweden Pernilla Jacket from Katherine Partis; bottom right: Dubarry Chamomile Ladies Shirt from Ride-away Equestrian Saints (although maybe hold off with the 1990s-style choker necklaces and belly chains this time around!). Ideal for: Everything! Utility wear has multiple pockets, is comfortable and usually goes with trainers. Combats in silky, floatier materials work well for the office, while everyday versions work well for transitioning from yard to school run to home.

Beige

OK, so it doesn’t work at all well at the yard. But beige is a lovely neutral colour to

team with your stripy navy breton tops, or berry-pink polo shirts. (NB – don’t call it beige, of course. It has to be something slightly more imaginative, such as “contemporary oatmeal”, “sandy dream” or “fawn blush”!) Ideal for: Rocking as the colourway of your Bermuda or board shorts, or as part of your workwear outfit. A timeless, classic shade that always looks smart.

The boys of summer... Tailoring Sharp tailoring – as seen from Louis Vuitton and Dior – is still on trend. There are some lovely touches – such as coloured piping, curved jacket hems and nipped in jackets - that suit all ages, if the right size is purchased. Interestingly, pin stripes and checks are popular again, and sage green or grey are reportedly the shades to be seen in. Pure cotton (or cotton-linen blends) are ideal for the warmer months. Although the trend may scare you off, doublebreasted jackets are back ‘in’ – but the boxy, loose cuts of yesteryear are “out”, pleasingly. (BUT – make sure if you want to adopt the “no-shirt-beneath-yourjacket” look, as showcased

by Ermenegildo Zegna and Hermès, that you have the confidence to carry it off!)

Hiking sandals

Yes, hiking sandals, long the preserve of the sensible hiker with a cagoule and flask of tea stashed in his backpack, are in vogue. (Gucci and Hermès’ pairs, each costing over £600, are selling like hot-cakes.) if they’re smart, wear them with anything; as, yes, some fashionistas are even wearing them with suits.

Short shorts

It’s true, as ladies’ shorts are getting longer, men’s are shrinking; at least if you follow the runways of brands like Prada, Louis Vuitton and Dries Van Noten. Wear in a neutral

colour, and team with a looser fitting shirt or polo shirt, and deck shoes or hiking sandals, if you’re of more mature years.

Man bags

As we said in our shopping feature, man bags, whether they’re holdalls, satchels or backpacks, are officially cool. PU leather is popular (and vegan friendly), and the fashion houses of Dior, Prada and Valentino are all capitalising on the fact that Men Have Stuff Too. (And you don’t want ruin the cut of your tailored jacket pockets.)   AA Platinum Men’s Motion Lite Competition Jackets from Country & Stable; above: Holebrook Sweden Wilmer Shorts from Katherine Partis

VET’S ADVICE with Dr Josefin Jansson DrMedVet MRCVS

horse No hooves, no

Dr Josefin Jansson explains laminitis – and why horse owners must take the condition so seriously

L

aminitis is a painful and serious condition of the equine hoof. It is a common cause for a veterinary visit and can affect horses, ponies and donkeys of all ages and breeds, all year round. In this article we will get to grips with what laminitis is, the signs to look out for and what you can do to prevent laminitis from developing in your horse.

Introduction The pedal bone is located within the hoof capsule and is suspended by means of Velcro-like connections called lamellae, which interlink with the inner horn of the hoof capsule. This prevents the pedal bone from being pushed down by the weight of the horse thus giving the hoof stability. In laminitis, the lamellae weaken to the point where they stretch or separate from the hoof wall. With a weakened suspension, the pedal bone will be pushed down by the horse’s bodyweight. It will either rotate or sink. Eventually, the pedal

HOOF

bone can push through the sole and at this point, the horse must be euthanised. The development of laminitis is not entirely understood. It was previously believed to be caused by inflammation only. But we now know that there are more triggers, therefore the condition can be grouped into three categories. 1. Supporting limb laminitis In non-weightbearing limb conditions such as severe cellulitis, there is a risk of development of laminitis in the opposite healthy hoof which has a weight overload. 2. Sepsis associated laminitis Laminitis is seen as a consequence of systemic inflammatory conditions such as retained afterbirth, colitis and grain overload. The toxins and inflammatory products associated with the systemic inflammation negatively impact the lamellae. 3. Endocrinopathic laminitis This is by far the most common form of laminitis in the UK. The key feature is an abnormal response to

 A pony with laminitis leans back to offload the sorer front hooves carbohydrates which leads to excessively high insulin levels in the horse’s blood stream. This appears to affect the lamellae in a negative way, causing the bond with the hoof wall to weaken. Diseases which cause insulin dysfunctions, such as equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) and equine Cushing’s disease (pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction), are commonly underlying.

Symptoms and when to call the vet For a chance of recovery, you as a horse owner must act fast. Laminitis is a true emergency and you should call your veterinarian immediately if you

Natural products for horses, dogs and their humans

Visit our website today to see our full range of products suspect laminitis. A horse with laminitis is experiencing severe hoof pain. Therefore, the number one symptom will be some degree of lameness, from pottery or shuffling gait to refusal to move at all. The horse could be seen leaning away from the sorer hooves or weight shifting from one hoof to another. The horse may lie down and that is sometimes misinterpreted as colic. There is increased heat in the hooves and over the coronary band. An increased pulse strength of the digital arteries can be palpated at the back of the fetlock. Please note that other conditions can cause lameness and increased pulse strength and heat in the hoof, such as a hoof abscess. Divergent growth rings on the hoof wall are a delayed sign of laminitis. These rings are wider at the heel and will be seen two to three months after onset of laminitis. In chronic laminitis these rings will be seen from the coronet band all the way down to the rim of the hoof. Please note that growth rings also can develop due to stress, medication or changes in diet, but these rings will be uniform in width. 

EQUINE HEALTH

How to prevent laminitis Laminitis is a very painful and costly condition, so prevention is key. The following list of questions would be useful to ask yourself, or your veterinarian. Are the hooves OK? You should be confident in palpating the digital pulses – get your veterinarian to show you next time he or she is in your yard. If you can get into the habit of daily checking for heat in the hooves and the pulse strength, you will straight away notice abnormalities. And look out for divergent growth rings! Pottery gait or shuffling around corners are subtle signs of laminitis. Be critical and if in doubt get your veterinarian to assess your horse.

 A horse with laminitis will need remedial farriery, above; research has shown obese horses are more likely to develop laminitis, right

Treatment Pain relief The number one objective is to tackle the pain. Your veterinarian will prescribe a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is initially used at a higher dose and later tapered down, over several weeks or months. Be aware of the risk of colitis as a side effect to longterm use of NSAIDs – if your horse gets diarrhoea or colic, stop treatment and call your veterinarian immediately. Box rest and monitor The horse must be placed on strict box rest in a stable on a deep shavings bed. Sometimes your vet or farrier will place additional hoof support. If the horse is in a lot of pain it might be difficult to move around. Ensure water is within reach and offer hay in several corners of the stable. You must monitor the level of comfort daily. This can be done by observing the horse over the stable door: does he or she have a pained facial expression? Is the appetite good? Is there an increased breathing rate? Are there signs of hoof pain such as weight shifting? You should also check the heat in the hooves daily and the pulse strength in the digital arteries. Treat underlying conditions If endocrinopathic laminitis is suspected, testing for EMS and equine Cushing’s disease should be done. If confirmed,

HAPPY

HOOF

treatment will help prevention of future laminitis episodes. In supporting limb laminitis, measures to reduce weight on the supporting limb should be taken. In case of sepsis associated laminitis, the horse is most likely already on the supportive care and treatment for this. Radiographs and hoof care To assess position of the pedal bone within the hoof capsule, your veterinarian can take radiographs. It will give clear measurements of if and how much movement has happened and the degree of rotation. This information will also be very useful to your farrier, as special trimming and shoes will be required. A hoof supplement containing biotin, methionine and zinc will help the hoof to recover and regain strength.

Prognosis The sooner your horse gets veterinary attention, the better chance there is for complete recovery and return to previous use. However, the prognosis is influenced by response to pain relief, if the pedal bone has moved and efficacy of treating underlying conditions.  Pictures courtesy of Poynton Farriery Clinic, except main image

Low Sugar

High Fibre & Low Calorie

Is my horse overweight? Not all obese horses become insulin dysregulated, but research has shown that obese horses are more likely to develop laminitis. Ask for an honest opinion on your horse’s body condition and if weight loss is needed, your vet can get help to develop a clear plan on how to achieve it. Does my horse have equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) or equine Cushing’s disease? Your horse can have some, all or none of the classic signs of equine Cushing’s disease or EMS. If in doubt a blood sample can be taken to measure the ACTH, which will be abnormally high in a horse with PPID (Cushing’s). In EMS, insulin dysregulation is confirmed by an oral glucose challenge test. Is this pasture suitable for my horse? To minimise the risk of an abnormally high insulin spike in your horse’s blood stream, do not abruptly turn your horse out on very lush pasture. If possible, strip graze to eat down the pasture at a sensible pace. Overweight individuals should be turned out where there is little or no grass and soaked hay can be provided instead as forage. Alternatively, thinner horses or other animals, such as sheep, can be allowed to graze down the pasture before overweight horses are allowed on it. 

ust like their riders, aches, pains, stiffness and swelling can severely affect our horses’ quality of life, limiting their enjoyment of being out on a ride, causing discomfort when resting up at home in the stable and even stopping you getting out and about together at all. These issues might have developed from injury or from age but, whatever their cause, the effect is the same – an unhappy horse and a long search for a solution that offers some relief. But now a growing number of horse owners have discovered a simple, completely natural approach can put a spring back into their companion’s step – harnessing the deep power of magnets to aid the healing process and restore balance in the body. Pulse Magnetics has developed a range to help both people and pets over 20 years, with many clients who have found themselves pain-free after trying our products keen to get the same results for their animals. Magnetic therapy has been practised for thousands of years, says Pulse Magnetics’ founder Ray Padfield-Krala, who explains: “Magnetism is the very foundation of life on earth. Our bodies are ‘electric’, resonating within a frequency range and constantly being altered by poor diet, injury, illness, accidents and the effects of electromagnetic fields so it makes sense to use magnetic therapy to re-balance the body’s natural healing mechanism. “Magnetic therapy products can help to readdress this imbalance by allowing

the body to repair itself from within by either applying powerful magnetic fields to a problem area or by exposing the iron atoms in blood to aid and improve oxygen delivery throughout the whole body.” Using high-grade magnets, Pulse Magnetics’ unique animal bands are designed and made here in the UK. The durable Fetlock Band is easy to fit and can be worn day and night as it doesn’t cause Horse Magnetic overheating. Grow a laminitis-free zone Lordington Park Agronomy’s Jonathan Holmes looks at how to prevent the disease with the right mix of grass and herbs – just as nature intended

H

orses are fundamentally designed to run and graze for 20 hours a day and sleep for the other four. They would have the choice of what they grazed on, whether it is a herb species that supplies their mineral requirement or a carefully considered grass species delivering the energy they need. Just think what we give them to feed on, or in! It’s often less than their ideal surroundings, but they have to be safe and secure. We are all rushing about being busy, and never seem to have the hours to spend with our animals. My late father was a veterinary surgeon who had an interesting holistic approach to treating all large animals – especially horses. In the 1960s he was using acupuncture and homeopathy to great effect to help alleviate the symptoms of laminitis in the shires and Friesians that the neighbouring estate used for dragging timber logs out of the woods as they didn’t create any environmental damage. As an equine agronomist I have explored for many years the herb species available to provide succour to our horses when they know that they are lacking a vitamin or mineral. I always include yarrow achillea millefolium, pictured, in the sward, as it is a diaphoretic herb that improves blood circulation and general blood flow. Both attributes are essential to speed up the rate of healing, and prevention, of laminitis. In recent years I have increasingly come to realise just how important my father’s holistic approach was in managing the environment in which we keep animals. Further research by Marytavy Archer in 1969-70 has confirmed my opinion and given me even greater conviction of purpose. She conducted an extraordinary experiment while studying at university. Essentially, demonstrating an extraordinary level of dedication with 220 hours of study over two years, she monitored the species preference of grazing horses. The results were subject to strict statistical analysis and reviewed by her peers. During the research, 24 ponies and two

 A horse wearing a grazing muzzle to restrict grass intake thoroughbreds were given access to 29 different trial plots that either contained individual grass species (eg. rye grass or Timothy); grass and legumes; grass (fescue species and Timothy) and herbs. A staggering investment in time, effort and thought. It was not a surprise to me that all the horses preferred the predominately native grasses (fescue species) combined with Timothy, and if those species were enriched with a range of herbs all the horses ate those plots first.

One of my specialisations is the application of Albrecht soil science to ensure that grass contains the necessary nutrients that should naturally be available to the horse. Once the soil is put back into balance, the appropriate grass species incorporated into the sward (upper layers of soil covered in grass) and companion species added to finish the improvement then the likelihood of your horses generating laminitis can be massively reduced – or, in the majority of cases, eliminated altogether.

Preventing laminitis – what to avoid 1. Ryegrass species Ryegrass is designed to produce high levels of non-structured carbohydrate (NSCs) or fructose as sugar, from dietary intake. Fructose is the last thing that the horse’s digestive tract needs, as it can’t digest it. Consequently, the streptococcus

116  |  SUMMER 2019   Your Horse & Country Magazine – EQUINE HEALTH

bacteria proliferate in the hind gut, destroying the beneficial flora and triggering a laminitic event – or, even worse, metabolic syndrome. 2. Clover All clovers produce and store energy as NSCs. The exceptions to this rule regarding legumes, as they are

PROMOTION

fantastic for horse environments, are black medic or trefoil species. 3. ‘Treats’ Apples, carrots, bread and Polos! All contain intense sugar levels. 4. Starvation paddocks These are a complete misnomer! Short grass is ALWAYS full of sugar (NSCs) as the grass is desperately trying to reproduce biomass, and therefore be tall enough to flower and replicate its genes – the last thing a horse prone to laminitis needs. 5. Cereal grains Even worse for the horse if they are coated in molasses. Unfortunately, I often encounter environments that generate racehorses riddled with ulcers and prone to laminitis because of their high-energy diets. 6. Rapidly growing grass Grass that is rapidly growing, especially ryegrass, will be full of sugar as fructose, as the grass rushes to produce biomass while the ideal weather lasts. 7. Leg injuries Inadvertently this can generate laminitis in the load-bearing leg/s. A high degree of laminitic incidence occurs when an injury is combined with a high-energy diet.

DON’T feed sugary treats

DO plant fescue grass species

What to do  Ensure that the grazing land is full of fescue species, Timothy and cocksfoot.  Remove all weeds and introduce companion species to your sward.  Find out what nutrients your soil is lacking and rectify the imbalance. This deficiency in the soil will inevitably be replicated in the grass/hay. Don’t waste your money on a replacement supplement with everything in, as the horse will just excrete what it doesn’t need!  Maintain a high exercise regimen to ensure horse hoof and body health.  Prevent your horses’ hooves from being exposed to prolonged immersion, especially if the water has faecal contamination as this will soften the hooves even more and rapidly increase

the likelihood of a laminitic event.  Ensure that there is adequate boron in your soil and hay/haylage. Boron is a key constituent of bone and foot health.  Get all your hay/haylage analysed to assess the carbohydrate content!  If you have a horse or pony that is prone to laminitis, wherever possible feed them more hay than fresh grass. Ideally on a hard-standing outdoors so that they can still interact with the world. If you need help to generate a laminitis-free environment, then contact Lordington Park Agronomy to see how I can assist. Jonathan Holmes Equine agronomist and lecturer in agriculture

Summer Time to reflect on paddock fencing and arena maintenance

securely and never pull out. When rolling the strips along the rail or post, all cut edges should be tucked under, making sure no loose edges stick out that could injure a horse. Even with the chicken wire in place, a nontoxic wood preservative can be applied to the wooden rails and posts or gravel boards periodically, and the wood fence will last a long time. Chicken wire protection is very cheap compared to replacing chewed-up posts or rails. A roll of it will cover a lot of fencing when cut into correctly sized strips. Staples will be another expense, as will your time. But when you weigh these costs against having to repair or rebuild the fence, it’s obvious that the chicken wire is cheap insurance, giving a much longer life to your wooden fence.

Fixing a sagging gate

K

eeping fences and gates in good repair is an important part of maintaining a farm, whether large or small.

Good fences help keep livestock safely housed. Besides being dangerous, a sagging fence or gate, broken gates or posts and downed or loose rails mean your horses are at risk of being easily stolen or tempted out onto a busy road or into hostile territory, possibly injuring or killing themselves in the process. Here are a couple of simple and inexpensive tips to help make fence and gate repair easier.

Chicken wire to protect wood fences Many horses chew wood fencing, especially when confined in small areas. They can destroy a fence very quickly with this bad habit. Some owners apply foul-tasting coatings to try to deter

chewing, but there are horses that chew wood no matter what you put on it. Some of the things people try (like old motor oil) are toxic, so if you want to use a paint-on or applied chemical chewing deterrent, use one that is approved for horse areas. A better, safer way to protect wood fences is to cover the posts and rails with small-mesh chicken wire. Horses can’t chew through it and it’s unpleasant on their teeth, so hopefully they will quit. Fence rails or posts can be readily protected by covering them with chicken wire, cutting it into strips the correct size with tin snips. It can be stapled to the rail at frequent intervals so there are no loose patches or protrusions—just a smooth surface that the horse can’t grab hold of. Use staples that are large enough to hold

120  |  SUMMER 2019   Your Horse & Country Magazine

Wooden or metal gates can become a heavy burden to open and close if they begin to sag and drag on the ground. Gateposts should be sturdy and set deep to avoid sagging. But unless the posts are set in concrete, even wellconstructed gates can drag because posts can “give” over time. In some areas, the ground is unstable and won’t hold a post well, especially for a heavy gate. For example, frost can push posts upward, making them less secure. Occasionally, a simple pole panel is used as a gate in an opening that does not have a sturdy post for hanging a proper gate. Having to lift or drag the panel to open and shut can be a backbreaking chore. These problems can be solved by putting a small wheel underneath the moving end of a panel or sagging gate. The wheel takes all the weight and supports a gate or panel to prevent further sagging and enables easy opening and closing. Posts rot where they meet the ground and should be replaced if this is the case. Another reason for gates sagging is that they are often constructed using mortise and tenon joints; the tenon part of the joint often works loose. A remedy before they go beyond the point of no repair is to use nylon bail twine and something like a short length of broom handle. Clamp the gate by tying the length of twine round the gate and use the broom handle to tighten the twine by twisting it in the twine. This clamps the gate, which will tighten the joints. While it is clamped, either drill through the mortise and tenon and insert wooden dowels or simply screw two screws through the joint.

Arenas

Sand and rubber arena

Following a very wet winter, is your arena looking tired and in need of some attention? Here are some ideas to improve your sand, sand and fibre or sand and rubber manège.

Sand Arena

Sand and fibre arena

Re-level, paying particular attention to the migration of the surface into corners and gravel boards. A problem with the older rubber manèges is that the edges in particular, but not exclusively, compact very hard and levels are often extremely thin down the centre line and very deep and compacted around the margins. Re-level, paying particular attention to the migration of sand into corners or gravel boards. Once level, take advantage of all the rain over winter and roll while the sand is damp. Why not consider adding fibre such as Beta-Ride®, a 100% new product that is a mixture of polypropylene, polyester and nylon (OVAMapproved), before the summer takes hold and the sand dries out and starts to ride deep?

Re-level, paying particular attention to the migration of the surface into corners and gravel boards. Once level, consider rejuvenating by power harrowing the manège to remix the fibre in the sand. If the surface depth is four inches or less, think about adding more sub-angular sand and fibre such as Beta-Ride®, a 100% new product that is a mixture of polypropylene, polyester and nylon (OVAM-approved), to a level of six inches.

A solution is to hand-rotovate around the margins, taking great care not to let the rotovator bury itself and dig into the membrane. Add more sub-angular sand if the surface depth is four inches or less and add fibre such as Beta-Ride® Plus, a 100% new product that is a mixture of polypropylene, polyester, nylon and Lycra (OVAM-approved), to a level of six inches. Adding the Beta-Ride® Plus to a tired sand and rubber arena greatly improves the rider’s confidence and horse’s performance.

The lie of the

land Keeping a few animals on your own land – what could be simpler? Kathy Carter ponders 10 of the biggest questions you’ll need to ask yourself

I

f you own a smallholding, private stable yard or even a property with a large garden, you may well be tempted by the idea of keeping animals at home. A smallholding is essentially a small agricultural venture, usually one that doesn’t make money. The key to staying within the law where modest properties are concerned is to keep it small – for example, a couple of equines kept as pets with a mobile field shelter, buildings that are “incidental to the enjoyment of the dwelling house”, and a brood of chickens or small herd of alpacas, generally doesn’t warrant red tape and paperwork. However, a new stable block, an equestrian business that includes hire and reward (and even a small herd of pet goats!) will definitely start to generate paperwork and permissions.

*

Can I afford to be a landowner? The golden question is – how much money do you need for your dream corner of land? Prices vary wildly, in terms of the cost of acreage, and some of the most robust sources do date from 2017 – before

the increasing confusion and apprehension over Brexit! Hence, local estate agents are always the best sources of advice and figures. Residential land is costlier than arable land. At the height, rural building plots in the South East sold for as much as £1 million per acre, in 2015. Prices are slightly more modest now, with the Government’s Land Value Estimates document, published last year, valuing residential property in the East Midlands (as a geographic example) at around £815,000 for an acre. For those of us looking to house animals, however, land prices are more achievable. Many smallholders have one or two acres of grazing land, which is usually enough for a couple of ponies. Last year, Cirencester’s Royal Agricultural University valued land at up to £9,000 per acre for arable, and £7,000 to £8,000 per acre for pasture, (using the Midlands again as an example), while the Government, and estate agents Strutt & Parker's 2018 Farmland Database, describe an overall average of £8,500 per acre for grazing or agricultural land in the UK. Having said

122  |  SUMMER 2019   Your Horse & Country Magazine – BUILD IT

this, where demand outstrips supply, welldrained plots with good access for vehicles and a water supply for horses could easily top £10,000 per acre.

*

Do I need any permits for a smallholding with animals or horses? You need a County Parish Holding (CPH) number for certain livestock including goats, sheep and pigs (or more than 50 poultry birds, eg. hens, geese and ducks). The Government’s Animal and Plant Health Agency can advise on this. Interestingly, no CPH is required for alpacas and llamas! If your yard could be construed as a riding school, e.g. you’re hiring horses for money, or teaching for money, then you are a “riding establishment” and need to obtain a licence. However, for a livery yard, e.g. if you have a livery stabled with you to

keep your horse company, you only need to meet health and safety requirements. (See the Government’s ‘Health and safety in horse riding establishments and livery yards’ document at gov.uk; the British Horse Society has more useful info at bhs.org.uk.)

How can I develop an existing property into stables? The first consideration if you want new stables at home is whether any existing buildings can be converted. If an existing agricultural-type building is structurally sound, has good ventilation and suitable ceiling heights, you may be able to convert it to stables. If you're updating an existing building, you will probably be able to create made-tomeasure internal stables with your chosen supplier.

Do I need planning permission for my equestrian building project?

p Top: planning authorities are said to look more favourably on applications that re-use an existing, redundant building, says Kathy Carter; above, you’ll need a County Parish Holding number if you want to keep certain kinds of animals, including cattle, pigs and sheep

In most cases, planning permission is required for stables. The Gov.uk website, which details current planning legislation, states: “You’ll probably need planning permission if you want to build something new, make a major change to your building, or change the use of your building.” However, you may not require permission for a stable for a pet horse if you’re adapting a building within the curtilage of the house, e.g. the immediate enclosed garden area, and the stable is “incidental to the dwelling house”. Planning authorities are also said to look more favourably on a planning application if an existing, redundant building can be re-used for something else. Therefore, development is usually permitted if there’s a change of use from an agricultural building (and its land) to a small development within the existing external dimensions, using “reasonably necessary” building works. (Date restrictions do apply). “Reasonably necessary” services such as water, drainage etc are also likely to gain approval. It usually takes up to three months to process a planning application; visit www. planningportal.co.uk for information. The website also gives details on building regulations approval, although private builds may not have to comply, as they tend to apply to commercial properties. (However, some “material change of use” builds, extensions and “underpinning” works will need these approvals; your supplier can advise.) u

Can I develop an outbuilding into an equestrian facility?

 Be creative if you’re lucky enough to be able to design your own stables – you could incorporate a field shelter at one end or add storage rooms

A common query is whether planning permission is required for developing an existing outbuilding. If it is just a minor internal change, is single storey, and the purpose is seen to be “incidental to the enjoyment of the dwelling house” then you may not need planning permission. (Again, www.planningportal.co.uk has useful advice). The information already given on planning permission applies for major changes, however.

*

What about building regulations? If you want to erect a new, small building at your property, building regulations will probably not apply for structures less than 15 square metres without sleeping accommodation. Buildings up to 30 square metres, without sleeping accommodation and constructed substantially of noncombustible materials, are generally also exempt. Building regulations tend to apply to larger, commercial properties.

*

Do I choose mobile or static field shelters? If there’s insufficient natural shelter in the fields (e.g. from walls, hedges or trees), a field shelter will be required. Mobile shelters are usually three-sided, open-fronted timber constructions, usually with metal skids, suitable for relocation. They may have the option to add metal or timber gates to the frame. Mobile field shelters (e.g. with no ground preparation or physical attachments to the ground) generally do not need planning permission. However, some individuals erecting mobile shelters do still experience challenges from local authorities, so there do still seem to be some different interpretations of the law; check with your local authority and consider moving the shelter around periodically. If you want to erect a new, permanent field shelter, planning permission is required.

*

How do I choose a construction supplier? A quick flick through the back of this magazine showcases some contractors that you could engage for building works. Word of mouth from local satisfied customers is always a good way to source suppliers! In terms of the type of buildings you choose, this depends on many factors, from budget to practicalities (e.g. whether you’re having bespoke stables, for example to fit into an existing building, or

an “off-the-shelf” build.) If you’re in need of planning permission, working with a supplier who is familiar with elevation drawings (and can provide them or recommend someone who can), could be beneficial.

*

What style or shape stable complex is best? Internal barns are popular for larger properties, and work well for existing outbuildings; new-build C or L-shaped layouts allow horses to see each other. However, for smallholdings, “straight” builds are probably the most popular, due to space constraints, e.g. two stables and a store room in a row. The lie of the land will help inform the choice – for example, is the property undulating? Excavation and filling may be required for more hilly areas. Your construction supplier will also consider flood risk. You should also take into account the direction the stables face – e.g. ideally away from prevailing winds. Be creative, if you get to design your build – for example, some smallholding properties within a paddock have field

shelters incorporated into the ends of a stable block, or you can choose to add small store rooms, for yard utensils, rugs and feed.

*

What practical elements should I consider? Think about what size horses will use the stables in the long term; choose larger stables if you can, e.g. 14’ x 14’. Doorways should be four feet wide and at least seven feet tall. Consider the logistics for electricity, drainage and water, (e.g. will you need a separate metered water supply?). Do you have the capacity for rainwater harvesting, bore holes and solar power for generators? Pay attention to ventilation in the development, and remember that stable floors ideally need to slope and drain downwards, towards the door. Check whether planning regulations specify any materials or colours; e.g. dark oak is sometimes used to “blend” in with the surrounding architecture or environment, to meet requirements for “visual and environmental impact”. 

Do-it-yourself compact tractors Did you know that you could build your own compact tractor? Siromer were the first to introduce this innovative idea to the UK back in 1999; it was a roaring success, which has created an elite group of flatpack tractor builders with a unique knowledge of the workings of our tractors. Before you write this off as a job too big, it is worth noting that no one has ever been unable to complete the challenge. It may take you a weekend, it may

take you a week, but even with no prior mechanical experience, anyone can do it, and it’s well worth the effort. The tractors are built once in the Chinese factory for testing and then disassembled for shipping. With the help of a manual, fully equipped tool box and Siromer mechanics on hand to discuss any issues you might have, this project can be a very enjoyable and rewarding one.

e endeavour to meet the desire and demand of each individual customer. Although our name is synonymous with the equestrian market, we are regularly being asked to design and supply bespoke projects. Harlow Bros are proud to have been associated with many prestigious projects over the years, ranging from racecourse installations, studs and riding schools to trainer's yards. Whilst enjoying the prestige and challenge presented by proposals of this type, the same care and attention is afforded to every order whatever the size. We feel extremely proud to have worked on some of the most recognised horse racing courses in England, including: Aintree, Ascot and Great Lees to name a few. From large American Barns to single Mobile Field Shelters, whatever the application, Harlow Bros have the experience and expertise to ensure our customers receive a first-class product and service each and every time. There has been an increase in the popularity of the ‘Harlow American Barns’ with our new innovative design features, and advanced manufacturing techniques allowing us to keep up with the modern, ever changing industry. This has been a popular choice for customers wanting to expand their stable yards whilst keeping the quality and diversity of the Harlow stable buildings. We have also seen a rise of enquiries and sales of our profoundly admired Mobile Field Shelters. With our wide range of specification and adaptations these make for the perfect cover, safekeeping and warm haven for your horses with our indifferent weather. All our buildings are designed by our experienced draftsmen within our facility in the East Midlands. Our buildings are hand crafted using resilient, high quality materials. All Harlow products are produced in-house meaning we are able to ensure consistent quality control over all stages of manufacture. From importing the timber, to delivery of the finished product. We carefully source durable Scandinavian Redwood to add to our attractive, versatile stable designs. A process of our production that is distinctive to Harlows Timber is the pressure treatment carried out in our own mill in Long Whatton.

Our history has ensured that the quality of our buildings continues to be the foundation of our success.
