Life’s little luxuries

Welcome I

Issue 25 | SPRING 2020

t’s certainly been a wet, wild winter. If, like us, you’ve been slogging through mud and battling the storms, with none of those bracing but beautiful rides across ice-frosted countryside to lift the spirits, then you’ll also be champing at the bit for spring to arrive.

Yard Talk with Team YHC

Hopefully, it will bring some more settled weather than we’ve had of late, to enable us to get a head start on preparing our horses and grounds before event season is upon us again! Find out how Team YHC has been getting Lovely Louis and the rest ready – despite some real challenges this winter! See Yard Talk on Page 106. While the weather might calm down a bit, the equestrian community will be doing anything but with one of the biggest highlights of the calendar now just a matter of weeks away – Badminton 2020! It’s all change this year with a new event director taking the reins so we thought, as it enters a new era, we’d take a look back at how the event was born 71 years ago – see Page 85. The professionals will, of course, be swinging straight into action with their tried-andtested training regimes to get competition-ready – but what about us lesser mortals and equines? Kathy Carter looks at how we can put some top tips for preparation into practice in our own yards on Page 136, while our vet Dr Josefin Jansson offers some sound advice on the ailments that rear their heads every spring and the steps we can take to make it a smooth transition into a new season on page 124. In Your Country Property, from Page 14, interior designer Zoe Hewett shares some inspiration on how to refresh our homes inside and out while Kathy Carter explores some stunning ways to add a touch of luxury, from pool rooms to swimming pools. There is so much more inside this edition to enjoy, so allow me to simply wish you all a wonderful spring and a great start to the season.

Six reasons why a full gut means a healthy horse The digestive tract of the horse is designed to have an almost constant trickle of fibrous material moving through it. When a horse’s gut receives a continuous flow of fibre, the benefits go much further than just keeping hunger at bay. In this article I will explain the main reasons why it’s important for us to supply our horses with enough species appropriate forage to maintain overall horse health.

If the gastrointestinal tract is not kept full, it can twist and move in ways to cause serious colic. Torsion of the gut, in the most extreme cases can cause strangulation with a very poor prognosis. Furthermore, the abdominal muscles involved in squeezing material through the gut are not exercised and become flabby, increasing the colic risk even more as gut mobility is increased.

2

The billions of bacteria that reside in a healthy gut require plenty of fibrous material as their food source. If fibre is lacking in the diet, these bacteria are disadvantaged, causing digestive upset. These bacteria are also responsible for producing various vitamins that cannot be obtained through the diet including vitamin B1, biotin and vitamin K.

Claire Burrow

3

Lack of forage exacerbates the ulcer risk. The horse’s stomach is constantly producing gastric acid; saliva, which buffers this acid is only produced when the horse chews. Fibre also acts to stop acid from splashing up and damaging the unprotected upper portions of the stomach.

4

A fourth reason why the gut should always have a trickle of fibre though it is to protect against dehydration. The large amount of fibre within the gut acts as a reservoir for water and electrolytes, helping to prevent dehydration when heavily sweating or prevented from drinking for a period.

5

Forage is central heating for your horse! Microbial digestion of fibre in the hind gut produces heat. Lack of fibre particularly during the winter means your horse will struggle to maintain his own temperature and is more likely to drop weight, develop colic and have a lowered immune system.

6

Finally, the horse has an innate desire to chew on fibrous material. Being prevented from eating enough fibre puts the horse into a stressful state, affecting hormones responsible for fat metabolism and raising blood cortisol levels. Behavioural changes like irritability, cribbing, box walking and weaving can be attributed to lack of chewing time. Humans may call this ‘boredom’ but for the horse, the physiological effects of lack of fibre are significant. When horses are given forage on a free choice basis, in other words, when forage is not restricted, they will learn over time to self-regulate and only consume as much as they need. Some horses who have been severely restricted for much of their lives may have become leptin resistant which means they may never be able to selfregulate. Leptin is the satiety hormone which controls appetite. In the leptin damaged horse this feedback loop is broken resulting in over-eating.

Forage intake can be slowed down using small holed nets, but the key is to never let forage run out, even for a short periods of time as this will stimulate the ‘stress response’ which encourages over eating when forage is next provided. Of course, this forage needs to be species appropriate, so ensure it is high in fibre, high in dry matter (not too wet), contains appropriate energy levels, is low in sugar and has been thoroughly nutritionally tested. Our Devon Haylage meets the criteria above, providing the perfect fibre source for all horses and ponies, from hard working thoroughbreds right through to laminitic Shetlands, helping to keep the gut in good shape and therefore your horse happy and healthy. Try to feed our haylage all year round, on a free choice basis for long term health benefits. charming. Laying smart-looking slabs of slate, Indian sandstone or Cotswold stone will be wonderfully hardwearing and lend long-lasting good looks to any outdoor space. When installing a new patio, be sure to ask about care instructions (dark slate may mark more easily in hard water areas, for example) so that you can spend minimum time maintaining and maximum time idling. If new stones or pretty ceramic tiles are not an option, even weeding and a simple spruce up with a pressure washer will make a huge difference, or a respectful mow of the lawn. If you have a tiny yard rather than rolling meadows then installing your own green wall with wall-mounted pockets for herbs and easy-to-grow wildflowers is a costeffective, pollinator-attracting way to create a little oasis that will make a wonderful backdrop to entertaining your dinner guests. At the time of writing, the exchange rate stood at $1.29 to the pound. It could be a great opportunity to buy cheap and make a substantial profit from the dollar when values have the potential to return to a similar level to 2014, when it was around $1.70 to the pound, or even the levels seen in 2007, when it was over $2 and express your own style by seeing what are plenty of clever wooden benches to the pound. may be some treasure you can transform. Wrought iron furniture can often be repaired and if you don’t like the distressed look, have it sand-blasted ready for priming and painting again in an exciting new colour. Nothing beats wooden-framed deckchairs to make a quintessentially British style statement, and there are hours of fun to be had watching friends who don't know how they work try to unfold and set them up ready for sitting on. If the original fabric looks tired, why not replace it with new heavy duty-canvas and paint on your own stripes? Or be a rebel and do spots and splats. Most good art and craft shops can supply a suitable fabric paint or dye in an array of ice creamy, pastel tones, and sewing machines will allow the removal of the bobbin drawer and needle so that you can get the wooden frame in position to stitch new canvas in place. Or simply hammer it in tightly with webbing tacks. When buying new garden furniture, try to first think about the materials it is made from and what happens at the end of its useful life. The Gables, Dyrham

The Gables stands in a beautiful setting in the historical and picturesque village of Dyrham which is within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and famous for The Dyrham Park Estate, one of England’s most beautiful country estates now owned by the National Trust. Situation: This charming country home was built to exacting standards in 1991 including many traditional features such as a gabled roof and stone mullion windows. PROMOTION

SHOW-STOPPING Cotswold Home Cinema’s award-winning home cinema design and installation allows movie buffs and music lovers alike to enjoy their passions to the full – so grab the popcorn...

A

t Cotswold Home Cinema we are fortunate enough to be able to call something that we are truly passionate about our “work”. The emotions felt when watching a film or listening to music are truly unique. Who can say why we can be moved to tears by an image on a screen, or how it is that a single piece of music can make a scene more moving. It's these individual responses to sound and vision that make our work nothing other than a pure pleasure. We combine over 15 years of industry experience with expert knowledge, and a belief that intimate and involving cinematic experiences can be created in any space, within any home, to offer our customers unrivalled levels of service and, ultimately, the most rewarding and satisfying home cinema experience possible.

FOR EVERY HOME We take pride in being able to call ourselves a familyrun business, with our focus being on providing a truly unique and personal service. Making the most of our idyllic setting in the North Cotswolds, we have created demonstration facilities that showcase just how easily a cinema room with all the latest technology can be seamlessly integrated into a beautiful family home. The most outstanding home cinema set-ups can be sympathetically installed into any space, within any property, ranging from contemporary new-builds to English country houses and stately manor houses. The same can also be said for commercial buildings, such as offices, meeting rooms and conference facilities, through to boutique hotels, brasseries and restaurants. Modern new-build homes lend themselves effortlessly to what the latest “smart home” innovations have to offer, yet even chocolate-box cottages can be transformed with the addition of carefully designed and expertly installed audio and visual elements, as is evident throughout our own Victorian farmhouse.

THE BEST TECHNOLOGY If you love to watch films and you're looking to have a dedicated cinema room designed, we will create a space that exceeds all expectations and delivers a level

of excellence over and above anything you thought possible. The brands we have chosen to work with have been carefully hand-picked and are the pinnacle of what’s available within the industry. If listening to music plays a significant role in your day-to-day living, we can install a hi-fi system that not only looks beautiful, but also delivers superlative sound and will sound as good as if you were listening to the music live. The clarity and depth achievable from relatively small and discreet speakers is remarkable. Gone are the days when we thought of speakers in terms of "bigger is better" ... the latest innovations in sound reproduction mean we can choose smaller speakers that fit effortlessly into any room, while producing the most captivating sound imaginable. And with the ability to have speakers produced in any Farrow & Ball colour, or personalised even further by having your favourite artwork printed on the grill, it's easier than ever to assimilate stunning speakers into any home.

YOUR VISION Whether you are looking for a dedicated home cinema room, a discreet media room set-up, or a highend hi-fi installation, the initial stages of the design process all start the same way... We invite you to our demonstration facilities where you will be met with the warmest of welcomes, a cracking cup of coffee and a range of different listening options for you to experience, where you can feel for yourself just how great watching and listening can be. Demonstrations are by appointment only. During our initial meeting, we would talk through what sort of design you envision. Together with our guidance, you would consider which elements of the

That's where our individuality and design expertise come into play – we have a wealth of experience creating beautifully designed rooms that deliver ultimate performance in every way. We approach each new commission as a totally unique undertaking, allowing time at the beginning, and throughout, to explore everything that is important to you, enabling us to create a design proposal that incorporates everything you want it to, and (if we've succeeded in our own task!) even more than you imagined possible. Our aim is to deliver a space within your home that is more than just a room – a space that becomes a place to relax, a place to enjoy, to socialise and entertain in and, most importantly, a place to create lasting memories in. If you are thinking of having a cinema or sound system designed for your home, don't hesitate to get in touch. We guarantee you won't be disappointed.

We like to think of ourselves as being a bit different to other home cinema companies out there. We are, without question, experts within our field; we are passionate, and we are professional and devoted to our work. Having spent over ten years working as a network engineer, Jim started building a solid foundation for the work he does now, developing a knowledge base that translates perfectly into home cinema design and home automation installation. I want our customers to really enjoy the whole experience, right from the very beginning at that first point of contact through to when we hand over at the very end. Our aim is to provide our customers with the most effortless and rewarding experience possible, and with our forces combined, we can offer you everything you could ask for from a home cinema design and installation company. Make your dream Austen-esque garden a reality

Deric Newman, Sales Manager at Glendale Civic Trees, shares how you can create a garden straight out of Pride and Prejudice. There’s no denying trees are one of my favourite features in a landscape. They add colour, shape and interest, and large specimens can add instant gravitas almost overnight. Their use in the English landscape garden is just as relevant today as it was in the 18th century. During the Regency era, when ‘Lancelot’ Capability Brown was landscaping for the UK’s landed gentry, trees were a key feature of the then fashionable, ‘picturesque vogue’ style of landscaping. The aim was to create a natural-looking landscape (so much so that they were often mistaken for the real thing!) and such sites have become the definition of the quintessential British countryside inspiring scores of painters and writers like Turner and Austen. Creating your own Austeninspired garden in 2020 couldn’t be easier with the addition of large trees. Semi-mature specimens help capture the timeless ‘picturesque’ feel that

defines this vintage landscaping trend by framing the middle distance, adding structure and texture in the background, and distributing light and shade in the foreground. A driveway can be transformed into an avenue for example. Even a few trees around an entrance makes a huge statement: you’ve arrived! We’ve also planted many trees as living markers of a significant occasion - a birth, marriage, milestone birthday or memorial. On a practical level, trees are really useful for screening or diffusing an unsightly view. Not everyone wants to look at the muck heap or the neighbours every day! In paddocks and parklands, as well as looking lovely, trees also help provide shelter from the elements, creating windbreaks and casting shade. Under the ground, the roots take water out of the soil and can be used to help dry out wet ground (just make sure to choose the right species). Tree roots can also help bind the soil together to mitigate erosion. Large specimens are a valuable habitat for wildlife, and of course, absorb and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere which, in a very small way, contributes to the fight against climate change.

There are two ways to achieve your picturesque vogue landscape - the first is by choosing specimens for your landscape project from a grower that specialises in large trees. I would always recommend making a visit to the nursery to handpick your trees - they are a big investment and deserve the same attention to detail as a racehorse. The second option is to move trees that you already have - this can be more costeffective than purchasing new trees outright and they will have the benefit of already being a good fit in your landscape. For the very best in tree care and technical advice for your instant-Austen garden, you can count on us.

Glendale Civic Trees has 50-years of unrivalled expertise and technical capability. We supply and plant large trees with precision, care and attention from a single-feature tree to an entire avenue or arboretum. We can relocate large, delicate trees from one location to another before successfully replanting. Our services include tree sourcing and supply; nursery visits for tree selection and inspiration; tree planting and relocation; tree care; estate management; landscaping services and airspade services.

ne’s home is one’s castle, if the oft-quoted phrase attributed to 17thcentury judge Sir Edward Coke, who declared that our house represents a fortress and refuge, is to be believed. Our home is the place we retreat to for familiarity, comfort and luxury, and a place we can express our individuality via art, interiors and design.

q Do you dream of being able to take a dip in your own hot tub or pool?

THE DREAM LIFESTYLE EXPERIENCE Sometimes we’re lucky enough to be able to add our own flourishes and features to a home that add investment value. Hardwearing and timeless installations are the best choices – think quality wooden staircases and stylish glass balustrade components – as well as architectural additions that expand space and functionality. From a business or financial point of view, many of the luxurious home additions that support our interests – e.g. cinema and games rooms – may not add value. However, they can attract a high-end clientele to future house sales and, for the right buyer, can clinch a sale. If you’re in the position to create luxury, interest-based additions to a home that you’re keeping, then do follow your heart. You will be

creating wonderful memories for your family, and offering a unique lifestyle experience to your nearest and dearest. There’s also the consideration that, sometimes, it is preferable to enjoy our interests at home – for example, tennis courts, cinema lounges and games rooms – to maintain one’s privacy. Why travel further afield when there’s a multitude of service providers who can help you create the dream lifestyle experience at your own property?

Who wouldn’t love a swimming pool at home? Imagine walking up and taking a dip in your own relaxing pool, before chilling out in a hot tub or beautifully lit steam room – all great ways to maintain wellness and internal equilibrium. Yes, it’s a considered purchase, but a pool can create a future, niche buyers’ market for your property, and will undoubtedly bring a new, indulgent element to your home lifestyle. custom look with a great deal of supplier choice. The HIRI also noted that not everyone wants to create permanent changes in their home; generation Z – the post-millennial generation that includes those currently in their early 20s – are reportedly making small, reversible additions to their first homes, rather than long-term changes. Therefore, look out for a range of quick-fix design solutions to change the look of a room, ideal for any younger residents and teens in your family. Wellness is also a key factor in current home design. Millennials and generation Z-ers are increasingly focusing on energy-saving solutions and products that deliver health and fitness benefits, according to the HIRI. Wellness design is reportedly a fast-growing discipline within the residential sphere, e.g. nontoxic paints, “touchless” faucets that reduce germ spread and circadian lighting that improves sleep. Whatever your ideal home, it seems there’s a multitude of clever solutions to help you enjoy the lifestyle you choose.

Billiards rooms enjoyed an 18th-century heyday when, following the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, many famous cafés in Paris (and later, London), installed them. They encouraged leisurely (male) camaraderie, and retained their popularity until well into the Victorian era, when the wealthy installed them in their homes. After a decline in appeal, the 21st century now sees a high demand for beautiful reproduction and antique billiard, snooker and pool tables, as produced by luxury brand Sir William Bentley Billiards. et’s look back to the 1920s. Just as we are currently witnessing in the 21st century, a new decade was dawning. But the early 20th century was a post-war period when peace was precarious, and culturally, big changes were afoot. Ireland’s Bloody Sunday erupted during the Irish Revolution, while Northern Ireland was created; the production and consumption of alcohol was outlawed in America with Prohibition; the British housing boom saw a million homes being built in the UK for war veterans; American and British women (over the age of 21 in the UK) were granted the right to vote; and the Olympic flag as we know it, with the five interlocking rings, was showcased at the Belgian Summer Olympics, as doves were released at the event to symbolise world peace.

HEROES AND PIONEERS Culturally, movie theatres were springing up in the western world, silent movies produced the first generation of movie stars, including Charlie Chaplin, and the radio was an entertainment staple in our homes; Gertrude Ederle became the first woman to swim the English Channel, while Babe Ruth was America’s first baseball hero. Concern for the environment was scant. Sewage was dumped into harbours, while oil pollution and dumped industrial waste threatened many varieties of fish with extinction. However, automotive engineer Harry Ricardo did warn the world about the importance of finding alternative fuel, saying: “By the use of a fuel derived from vegetation, mankind is adapting the sun’s heat to the development of motive power, as it becomes available from day to day; by using mineral fuels, he is consuming a legacy.”

THE ‘BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS’

until the late 1960s. The recent Downton Abbey film, set in this time period, features a clandestine meeting of men including closeted butler Thomas Barrow, which the director says is “a reminder that there were always times and places in the world where people could find each other in a way that was about connecting”.

DEFLATION AND DECLINE In the early 1920s, the Education Act was raised, so the school leaving age was now 14; slate and chalk was the medium of choice. The House of Windsor was still in its infancy, as the name had only been implemented in 1917 by the British royal family. Children might have been getting

a better deal in this era, but by the end of the decade, our country saw a period of depression, deflation and decline in the UK’s economy; unemployment rose, and the American Wall Street crash and Great Depression were imminent. 

1920

As the Roaring Twenties progressed, the “bright young things” of the aristocracy and wealthier classes prospered in the UK. Nightclubs, jazz clubs and cocktail bars flourished, glitzily portrayed in books such as The Great Gatsby; the horrors of World War I seemed a lifetime away, instead of a few short years. Fashion was key, for ladies with means; hair cuts and dresses were shorter (the term flapper was coined, originating from the fad among young women to wear rubber waterproof boots that were left open to flap when they walk); and women started to smoke, drink and drive motorcars. Girl power had arrived! Boy power was embraced too, but only in a few closed circles. The city of Berlin notably accepted homosexuality and sexual freedom, and a robust gay scene developed; however, being gay in 1920s England was illegal – it wasn’t legalised

A NEW DECADE

IS 100 YEARS REALLY A LIFETIME AGO? So, 100 years ago, Britain was seeing a massive change in the structure of its monarchy (in a few short years’ time, Edward VIII would abdicate, having fallen in love with a divorced American woman, whom some circles deemed to be unsuitable for him). Everyday individuals coveted the perceived lifestyles of stars in the field of films and sports; new houses were springing up across the country; cultural events sought to invite world peace; and the use of mineral fuels was criticised. LGBTQ communities craved acceptance; the school leaving age had been raised; the field of employment lacked job security and longevity; young women’s fashion choices were questioned by their parents; and American presidents garnered disappointment from their countrymen. Is 100 years really a lifetime ago?

TODAY IN 2020 – A CAUTIOUSLY POSITIVE TIME Fast forward to spring 2020, and Britain is on the cusp of change, with Brexit. Whether this is a positive or negative move depends on your viewpoint, of course. Economic growth is, apparently, set to take off to a solid rate by the end of the year, with

experts preparing for a pick-up in growth in 2021 and beyond. Today, our children are embracing environmental concerns – they’re the ones telling their parents to conserve electricity, turn down the central heating and switch to green energy suppliers utilising solar heating and photovoltaic panels.

CELEBRATING OUR STRENGTHS As animal lovers, we are predominantly a caring nation. And while there’s always room for improvement, with some of the highest animal welfare standards in the world we have good legislation in place that aims to improve animal welfare and recognise animals’ emotional and cognitive abilities. Despite our

own struggles in the UK, Brits are still generous givers – donations to Australia’s bushfire relief are fast approaching half a billion dollars (at the time of writing), with Britons keen to help the cause. In the UK this spring, the horsey community has recently returned from the British Equestrian Trade Association show; we’re continuing to support pioneering British companies in the fields of saddlery, fashion and safety, and for equestrian and countryside companies that are forwardthinking, the future looks bright. Many organisations in our sector continue to aim to reduce their plastic waste and improve their carbon footprint, in no small part thanks to “the David Attenborough effect”; small changes really do make a big difference, and our sector is making great strides. 

A NEW DECADE

CELEBRATING EQUESTRIANISM In the equestrian community, as this year heralds the Tokyo Olympics, we are feeling very positive about our British teams, with medals a good possibility in all of the main disciplines, including eventing, dressage, show jumping and para dressage. British equestrianism’s top athletes Piggy French, Charlotte Dujardin, Ben Maher and Sophie Wells are sure to be up for contention in their respective disciplines in Tokyo. Outside of equestrianism, swimmer Adam Peaty, sprinter Dina Asher-Smith and cyclist Laura Kenny are Brits earmarked as likely to be multiple medallists at this year’s Olympics.

WORLD-CLASS HORSEY EVENTS Aside from the Games, there are also some other hotly anticipated equestrian sporting events taking place in 2020. There’s the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup and FEI Dressage World Cup Finals at the Thomas & Mack Center in America, in April; our own Ben Maher is currently top five, while Germany’s Isabell Werth leads the dressage standings; Brit Charlotte Dujardin currently sits top 15 in the dressage rankings. For Polo’s Gold Cup this year, Cowdray Park’s famous Sussex lawns once again host the July spectacle. In 2018, Brits Charlie Hanbury, Ollie Cudmore, James Beim and James Harper, riding for El Remanso, lifted

the trophy, so perhaps these high-goalers could prove their mettle on the field again? A short flight away is the Dublin International Horse Show, held in July in Ballsbridge. Look out for the top-jumping riders such as Brits Scott Brash and Ben Maher in the Nations Cup classes; favourites Bertram Allen and Darragh Kenny, both hailing from Ireland, are also likely to make appearances at the show’s many speed classes. Equestrianism continues to enthral fans in 2020, with British and Irish riders leading the charge.

QUIRKY EVENTS AND TRADITIONS As we acclimatise to spring, pondering whether to venture out in a T-shirt or a winter coat, looking gamely ahead at the year before us, there are many British event staples to celebrate. From Strathclyde’s spring Whuppity Scoorie festival, which marks the approach of spring, and Easter Monday’s Hare Pie Scramble in Leicestershire, whereby a giant hare pie is thrown into a scrambling crowd, to our quaint May Day festivals, there’s a family event for everyone in our great country. These springtime events tend to celebrate the richness of the soil, the people of the region we live in, and the fertility of our livestock, helping us be grateful

for what we have. We Brits are a quirky bunch, also celebrating such shenanigans as Gloucestershire’s May-time cheeserolling event, whereby competitors chase a rolling cheese down a three-in-one slope to celebrate the turn of winter, and spring crops. Look out for traditional events and festivals in the county that you live in!

WELCOMING 2020 So, as we wave goodbye to 2019, and welcome in not only a new year, but also a new decade, there’s much to celebrate and look ahead to in 2020. It’s as good a time as any to brush off the recent unsettled political time and embrace whatever the future holds, ploughing our own furrow in life, celebrating our nation’s sporting prowess, and welcoming the dawn of a new decade in whichever ways we see fit, for ourselves and our families. n t Piggy French and Ben Maher are sure to be in action this year, with some great equestrian challenges approaching, including the Tokyo Olympics; right, cheese-rolling in Gloucestershire (Picture: 1000 Words/Shutterstock. com)

GET YOUR HORSE FIT AND READY TO ENJOY SPRING

D

o you give your horse a winter holiday? Unless you take part in an equestrian sport or pastime that takes place over the winter, those cold and dark months are a natural time to allow horses some time off. A few months off with plenty of forage, a fluffy coat and time to relax are ideal after a busy year keeping you company on hacks, pub rides and days out at competitions! If your horse has been in light work or totally turned away, it’s worth planning an equine fitness regime to ensure both of you are ready to make the most of good weather when it arrives. You wouldn’t expect to go from sitting on the sofa and pottering

WALK THIS WAY If your horse has been roughed off over the winter and not in work at all, start with lots of walking for the first week or so. This can be under saddle, on a horse walker or on the long reins or lunge (though it’s not a good idea to lunge for more than 20-25 minutes and not every single day).

HAPPY HACKING After a week or two of walk work, it’s time to hit the trail and raise the tempo a little bit! Walk and trot work out hacking will help build fitness up quickly, but it’s worth noting that trotting on

around the shops every day to running a 5k race, so don’t expect the same from your horse. Whether your aims are to reach new competitive heights or fun rides on the beach, you risk injuring your horse if you don’t build up their fitness gradually. In addition, younger horses will benefit from a slow increase in work while they are growing, while many older horses stay sound for longer with gentle work rather than being left in a field all day. So where to start in your spring fitness regime? Depending on your horse’s base level of fitness and your eventual aims, it can take eight to 12 weeks to get them to an appropriate fitness level. Bearing that in mind, here are some ideas:

roads should be avoided to protect legs. Trotting along tracks and gallops are a good option if you have access to them, particularly if they have an incline (hill) to work up. Bring in steady canter work after a week of walk and trot.

ARENA WORK Riding a horse in the arena and asking for an outline will help them to become supple, and balanced. Grid work and other school exercises help to build athletic as well as cardiovascular fitness and, of course, they are essential if your end aim is show jumping, eventing or dressage!

It’s worth planning an equine fitness regime – you wouldn’t expect to go from sitting on the sofa and pottering around the shops every day to running a 5k race, so don’t expect the same from your horse

GALLOPS AND INTERVAL TRAINING If you are aiming to compete in eventing (or any other equestrian sport which demands a high level of fitness), time spent on the gallops will be key. Interval training is where you aim to raise the horse’s heart rate with fast work but intersperse it with steadier canter or trot work to improve fitness more quickly.

THE TOPRIDE DIFFERENCE If you’re aiming for early events you’ll need to get cracking straight away, and that means training when the ground is still wet or even

frozen. An arena, particularly with floodlights, is worth its weight in gold for conditioning, and gallops are essential for fast work unless you’re lucky enough to be based near long turf bridleways. Many people imagine extensive groundworks and huge diggers if they think about having their own arena put in, but it doesn’t have to be that way. TopRide is a fibre all-weather surface developed by a Cotswold-based family business in conjunction with racehorse trainers. Perfect for both gallops and riding arenas, TopRide is stable, shock-absorbing and can be placed directly onto stone with no pre-surface treatment required!

TRY BEFORE YOU BUY If you’re interested in installing TopRide for a gallop or arena surface, did you know that you can visit the company and try it for yourself (with your horse) at their base near Badminton in Gloucestershire? BADMINTON HORSE TRIALS 2020

began... AND SO IT

Badminton Horse Trials is entering a new era with a new event director taking the reins. Here we look back at the birth of the nation’s ‘most important horse event’ 71 years ago

W

hen the then unsponsored Badminton Horse Trials first took place in 1949 it had the nerve to describe itself as “The Most Important Horse Event in Great Britain”. It remains so to this day. The sport of three-day eventing, of which Badminton is the pinnacle, is the ultimate test of all-round horsemanship. It started as a composite sport in the cavalry schools of Europe at the start of the 20th century. The idea was to test three aspects; first, training and obedience, with the sensible outcome of the rider being able to stop, start and steer his horse on demand. This became what is now the dressage (dancing horses) phase on day one. Next was bravery and fitness. This developed into a cross-country challenge of several miles with solid obstacles, such as fences, ditches, gates, ponds, hedges and banks, tackled individually by horse and rider. This takes place on the second day. Finally the horseman had to conserve energy and soundness to “fight another day”. This is tested by a course of knockdown jumps in an arena on the final day. For many years it remained a mainly military sport and indeed was called The Military on the continent. It made its first appearance at the Olympic Games at Stockholm in 1912, having been initially proposed for the London Games of 

1908. In the early days the formats changed around considerably and indeed at the postFirst World War Games at Antwerp in 1920, there was no dressage. The first Olympics after the Second World War were held in London in 1948. The previous year the Londonbased British Horse Society held a council meeting to decide what squads to enter for the Olympics and decided on pure show jumping and three-day eventing. The equestrian competitions were to be based, unsurprisingly, at the connecting military garrisons of Aldershot and Camberley. With a history of foxhunting and horse racing, Britain was ideally placed to produce horses and riders who could excel in the main challenge of the rather specialist

type of competition that was eventing. The weaker link was the dressage phase, which was viewed with some suspicion by the hard-riding thrusters from the racecourse and hunting field. “The prevalent notion of the Continental horseman was someone who spent his time bumming round an arena teasing his horse,” wrote Colonel Hope in The Horse Trials Story, which is probably why we were not represented in pure dressage in 1948. At the time the 10th Duke of Beaufort was vice patron and vice president of the International Equestrian Federation. It was hoped that Britain would put up a good show in 1948, the first time a horse trial had been run on home ground. Sadly it didn’t go to plan.

‘A MOST INTERESTING TIME’ The Duke of Beaufort was, however, an interested spectator at proceedings and promptly offered his Gloucestershire estate at Badminton as a venue for an annual

BADMINTON HORSE TRIALS 2020

It was very much a twoman affair in those days – the whole thing was a novelty to us, which made it a most interesting time

competition, initially to give the home side some match practice in the build-up to the next Olympics. In his own words, here is how the first Badminton came about. “Knowing the BHS wouldn’t let us down we set to work immediately and started to advertise the event for 1949 and to select the course. It was very much a two-man affair in those days; Trevor (first director Colonel Trevor Horn) used to put up the fences, I provided a very brilliant hunter. We used to make the top rail or two adjustable and I would go out and jump the fences. If the horse jumped them well we went ahead and decided it was a suitable obstacle for a three-day event. And so we gradually worked it up… It was quite a job getting everything ready, and as a matter of fact Trevor did all the work, designed the course and built most of the jumps, being very much a one-man show. He spent days here in the park on his own, working out the distances; of course the whole thing was a novelty to us, which made it a most interesting time.” The first Badminton was set to run from April 20 to 22. Col Horn and his team had to recruit an army of officials and helpers and also find accommodation, not just for the riders but also for their grooms, and as the schedule shows, their chauffeurs too! (Today most of the riders live in their lorries during the event.) No one knew how many riders would enter and then how many spectators would turn up to see this new sport for a fee of £1 per car per day or £2.10 shillings for the whole three days. As it turned out a very respectable crowd of 6,000 turned up to watch the 22 starters, 20 of whom were from Great Britain and the other two from Ireland. There were 21 obstacles on the cross-country course and the event made a grand profit of £20. Badminton had entered the pantheon of great sporting weekends, seemingly fully formed at birth. The first winner was professional horse trainer John Shedden on Golden Willow. Ironically as a “pro” he was ineligible to compete at the Olympics. The sport had opened up to civilians and surprisingly there were five lady riders lined up in 1949,

 Lucinda Prior-Palmer, pictured on Killaire, has won Badminton six times (photo: Kit Houghton)

when there had been none a year before at Aldershot. The sport remains one of very few where men and women compete against each other on completely equal terms.

A GLOBAL REPUTATION In the first two years Badminton was only open to Britain and Ireland. In its second year news had spread about The Most Important Horse Event in Great Britain and 19,000 people turned up to watch. By 1951, however, the invitation was opened to riders from further afield and there were representatives from the Netherlands and Switzerland, the latter producing the winner in Captain Hans Schwarzenbach with Vae Victis. British girl Jane Drummond-Hay was second and Dutchman Mr Van Loon was third. Badminton was now truly international. (Jane Drummond-Hay’s granddaughter, Izzy Taylor, is one of the sport’s stars today.)

By 1952 the crowd had risen to 55,000. Sadly, however, the dream of producing a winning British team for that year’s Helsinki Olympics fell flat. Meanwhile, however, Badminton had evolved in a very short time into a fantastic sporting event, which in terms of kudos in the sport was about to eclipse even the Olympic competition. On the tenth anniversary running organisers decided to split the growing entry into two sections, jumping the same course, but using a slightly more sophisticated dressage test for the higher-ranked section (this somewhat unsatisfactory system lasted till 1965, when all riders did the same dressage test, and eventually this phase was to spread over two days). Also in 1959 the 11th Duke, then Mr David Somerset, came second on Countryman II to first serial winner Sheila Willcox, who posted her third triumph that year. 

A STABLE OF STARS Inevitably an event as big as Badminton produced some standout stars over the years. Anneli Drummond-Hay won by an enormous margin in 1962 with Merely a Monarch. Richard Meade, who died in 2015, spans the time between the pioneer days of the sport to what many think of as one of the Golden Ages of eventing. He won team gold at the Mexico 1968 Olympics on Cornishman, Badminton in 1970 on The Poacher and went on to win both Olympic team gold and individual gold at the Munich Olympics in 1972 on Laurieston. He won Badminton again in 1982 with Speculator III. Richard’s son Harry is now a successful Badminton competitor. Mark Phillips won four times in a 10-

year span between 1971 and 1981 on his Aunt Flavia’s Great

Ovation, the Queen’s Columbus and Range Rover Team’s Lincoln. Possibly, however, the greatest Badminton star of all time was Lucinda Prior-Palmer, who first won in 1973 on Be Fair and achieved five more wins in 1976 on Wideawake, 1977 George, 1979 Killaire, 1983 Regal Realm and 1984 Beagle Bay. Ginny Holgate went through her purple patch in 1985 with Priceless, 1989 Master Craftsman and 1993 Welton Houdini. Other stars have included Ian Stark, Pippa Funnell, Mary King and, of course, Mark Todd. The latter three are still very much part of the scene and recent years have also seen the great rivalry between William Fox-Pitt and Andrew Nicholson. New Zealander Todd, now knighted for his efforts, first won as an unheralded first-timer in 1980 on Southern Comfort. In 1994 he won on chance ride Horton Point, starting as number one and never headed. Two years later he won on Bertie Blunt. He subsequently retired from the sport in which he had won two Olympic individual gold medals at Los Angeles and Seoul on

Charisma IV and trained race horses in his native country. He then made a triumphant return to win Badminton again in 2011 on NZB Land Vision. Badminton has always been a favourite with the Royal Family. Queen Mary lived at Badminton House during the war and when the event got under way the Queen was a regular visitor. The event and the sport as a whole came to a much greater public in the early 1970s when Princess Anne started to take part. She, of course, went on to marry fellow competitor Mark Phillips. Their daughter Zara, a former World and European champion, has competed at Badminton several times in recent years. 

A HIGHLIGHT OF THE CALENDAR What makes Badminton famous is the challenge of its cross-country course, which unlike the Grand National is redesigned every year. However, there have been some obstacles which, with a slight tweak, have become familiar sights each year. The Lake is probably the most famous, where about 10,000 people gather hoping to witness a splash at the series of jumps in and around it. There is always a devilish combination of jumps in the copse known as Huntsman’s Close and thrills to be witnessed at the Quarry. Along the Vicarage Ditch the designer can take the competitors snaking over all manner of conundrums and the start and finish are handily situated in the main arena. Badminton has become a great family outing since its inauguration in 1949. The overall crowd is now over 150,000 and more than 1,000 people book caravan slots. Riders may no longer need accommodation for their chauffeurs, but space has to be found for 85 of their vast trucks. The competitive field is now very international, with as many as 15 nations represented. What is known as a threeday event now actually lasts from Tuesday right through to Sunday. Tuesday and Wednesday are dedicated to the Science Supplements Cup competitions for  Kathryn Robinson riding Let it Bee; above left, spectators on cross country day; far left, browsing the trade stands (photos: Kit Houghton)

ggood GREEN & LOOKING

Kathy Carter explores conscious fashion for the fashion conscious

T

hank goodness for springtime! It’s obviously a time for renewal, for fresh ideas, and for new looks. In fashion terms, the high streets and equestrian stores are full of enticing clothing items. However, many of us are developing our eco-friendly consciences, and questioning commercialism and overspending.

THE SUSTAINABILITY BANDWAGON The big fashion houses have already jumped on the sustainability bandwagon, for example putting on carbon-neutral fashion shows, utilising “deadstock” fabrics from previous seasons, and offsetting carbon emissions from supply chains. Many designers are creating items from reclaimed yarns and filaments from ocean waste, while a recycled polyester made from plastic shoreline rubbish is also reportedly gaining in popularity. So, here we share some eco-friendly suggestions that will help your environmental conscience, while you stay “on trend” from a fashion perspective. Firstly, we should acknowledge that many of the high street’s current fashion trends do not transfer easily to the stable yard! For example, crocheted dresses and tops (hay will definitely get stuck in the holes), and minuscule bra tops and hotpants – far too much exposed flesh for inquisitive horses to nibble. Incidentally, Prada has a crocheted bra top on sale for almost $800, in case you did want to experiment with these trends. THE ‘SLOW FASHION’ MOVEMENT We all need or want to buy new clothing items, sometimes – but it is better to be mindful about purchases. Sustainability is, after all, a good look. Ideally, we should be considering buying from charity shops more often. When you do purchase new fashion items, buy better – opt for products that are

WONDERFUL WAISTCOATS

Sustainable Fast is out and slow is in for fans of fashion with a heart – garments that last longer, can be repaired and outlive trends are the best buys for the planet

sustainable and high-quality, and that can be repaired. Where expensive items like shoes and boots are concerned, this is especially true. Interestingly, this concept of “buying better” has a name – the “slow fashion” movement. Devised by Kate Fletcher of the Centre for Sustainable Fashion, it was originally intended to reject all mass-produced fashion, but has since evolved and can be practiced by buying trend-free, quality garments that will last longer and can be repaired. Slow fashion predominantly involves buying betterquality garments that will last for longer, and values fair treatment of people, animals and the planet. It aims to reverse the “fast fashion” concept that sees some low-cost high street brands reportedly burning 12 tonnes of unsold garments each, per year. 

A great way to stay sustainably on trend this spring is to use your tweedy showing waistcoat as part of your day wear; waistcoats are big news this season, if designers like Burberry, Etro, Gucci and Louis Vuitton are to be believed. Vogue magazine reports that they’re ideally cut tight to the body, and worn with billowing shirts – think model Kate Moss’s signature Noughties fashion look. They can be teamed with denim or widelegged trousers, for a smart, current look. Designer Celine reportedly provided the coolest styling inspiration on the recent runway shows, when the brand matched a dark-hued, unbuttoned waistcoat layered over a white blouse. If your hunting waistcoat is in a houndstooth pattern, you will be especially on trend.

PREPPY POLOS The same goes for your horsey polo shirts – now’s the time to dig them out for your everyday wear, as the preppy polo shirt is going to be a “hero item” for 2020, with designers like Prada promoting this trend. Colour and pattern wise, it’s the plainer the better, with cool pastel and neutral tones, worn with denims or wide-legged trousers. (Do clean the horse slobber off first, though!)  Ladies’ Plain Polo Shirt in Reef, from Lazy Jacks

UTILISE YOUR WORK WEAR Along the lines of multitasking your existing clothes, if you have a wardrobe of Oxford buttondown shirts, grab them now and start wearing them for school runs and lunch dates. This formal look is very much “in”, and is part of the “sensible season”, in 2020 fashion terms.  Musto Ladies’ Oxford Long Sleeve Shirt, Country and Stable

Non-organic cotton has raised environmental concerns, so other plant-based fibres, such as from bamboo and banana plants, are gaining popularity

REUSE ITEMS There are probably lots of items in your wardrobe that you have used for workwear or everyday clothes that can be relegated to stablewear, if they’ve seen better days. A great example is cutting off a pair of ripped jeans and using them as shorts for the warmer weather.

RESPONSIBLY RECYCLE Take your unwanted clothing items to charity shops or to recycling points – staggeringly, the fashion recycling app reGAIN found that 27% of Londoners threw unwanted clothes straight in the bin – surely something that the more environmentallymindful countryside set is less likely to do.

If you’re buying new equestrian fashion items, look into the company’s manufacturing processes. Many equestrian brands are doing their bit to be eco-friendly, but being encouraged further by savvy consumers can only be a good thing. There’s no harm in contacting a manufacturer to ask about the sustainability of their materials, and what “fair” practices they employ concerning the environment, as well as their ethical and animal impacts.

STEER AWAY FROM COTTON Our wardrobes are probably still dominated by non-organic cotton, but it is described as “a thirsty crop” that’s saturated in pesticides; its peer, polyester, is derived from petroleum, so isn’t a desirable replacement. Interestingly, in America, California’s state assembly has pushed for a law that would state that clothing comprising 50% polyester must carry a label warning of microfibre shedding

and advising that garments should be hand-washed, to reduce harm to aquatic environments. So-called “wealth from waste” plantbased fibres are therefore becoming preferable if you have an eco-conscience, including materials sourced from the stems of banana plants and pineapple leaves. Bamboo riding breeches, made from the pulp of bamboo grass, have been around for some years, of course! That countryside staple, the woolly jumper, is agreeably sustainable – as long as the yarn is sourced from sustainably maintained and sized flocks of livestock.

OTHER WAYS TO HELP THE PLANET Use less electricity indoors, e.g. fewer frequent dishwasher loads; use cooler wash cycles, rather than hot washing machine cycles; air-dry items instead of tumble

drying them; reduce your use of plastic straws and cups; switch to renewable energy suppliers if you can; utilise weekly food deliveries, so you’re reducing the amount of separate vehicle journeys (local box schemes use less plastic packaging than supermarkets). From an equestrian perspective, share transport to horse shows; ask around on social media riding club groups to see who else from your region is travelling to an event. Reuse water at the yard, e.g. collect rainwater for other uses; consider solar electric fencing; reuse old feed containers and sacks, and purchase supplements from brands that sell refills. 

Trust Modern Tailoring

D

o you find that dress codes have become really difficult to navigate? Convention used to dictate what to wear for certain occasions, but now jeans have become ubiquitous and smart-casual is about as dressed up as you get, short of weddings, funerals and balls. There also appears to be a real and growing fear of being overdressed, or looking like you’re trying too hard. This generally more relaxed way of dressing means that many women now have lots of clothes that are no longer worn. Maybe your lifestyle has changed and you don’t see a reason for dressing up, or you are so unsure about what suits you, you stick to an unadventurous combination of jeans and jumpers. Thinking about what you’ve already got, and doing some decluttering can be a huge step towards having something great to wear for every occasion. So, whether you’re going to the races, or out to lunch, it makes sense to find a look that you can wear with ease and confidence. You really don’t need lots of clothes, just a few well curated items that you can adapt for different occasions and build new looks around. This means you shouldn’t feel the need to change everything, just tweak things season by season and add accessories like my stunning cluster brooches.

My personal favourite solution comes when you find yourself a jacket. Not just any jacket, but your own perfect ‘Goldilocks’ jacket. A jacket that’s just the right colouring, that’s not too smart and not too warm. A jacket that will take you from country to city, through the seasons, and will be your go-to item for years to come. I promise you it’s worth the effort to find this jacket. You may already have it, you might add it to your shopping list, or you could have one made especially for you. You can then wear it with your jeans and boots, or with a dress and heels. You can wear it with a T shirt or a silk blouse and you’ll know you look good. This great jacket will also make everything you’re wearing with it look it’s best, while an ill fitting, badly designed jacket won’t enhance anything. Trust in your Goldilocks jacket and in good modern tailoring that you will wear for years. Investment dressing rather than fast fashion has to be the future. As an award winning fashion designer and creative, with years of experience advising and dressing a great number of women, I specialise in ladies tailoring and my clothes are made to last. Crafted from great fabrics and specifically created for the wearer, my clothes will endure through all passing fashion trends. I also run workshops and for groups and individuals, to help women look the best version of themselves. For tips and advice please sign up to my newsletter at:

YARD TALK

Team YHC is waving goodbye to the wettest of winters and its many challenges, with plans for an early start to the 2020 season looking bright...

WITH TEAM YHC

afresh STARTING

I

t’s a well-known fact that keeping horses during the winter months is hard but, golly, this winter seems to have been the hardest one for a long time! Hopes of beautiful frosty views, hard frozen grounds, crisp, chilly hacks through the countryside and cosy, clean beds to snuggle up in under the warmth of thick stable quilts really were far from reality! With what has seemed the wettest winter on record for a long time, it’s been rain, mud, vets and poor horses spending far too much time in stables rather than out in the fields. Two words I won’t miss as we head into spring are “mud” and “fever” – it’s fair to say that every single one of the horses has fallen foul of this horrible bacterial

infection caused by all the wet mud, but after course after course of antibiotics, oodles of steroid creams and plenty of box rest we finally seem to be rid of it!

Poor Charlie, our 14-year-old thoroughbred, really has had a tough time of late. After sustaining a hock injury in November last year he was on strict box rest upon finding damage to his hock after X-rays and further scans. After several weeks, he was finally given the all-clear in mid-January to pick up some very light walking work. With a fitness and build-up plan in place we set to work on his return, but four days in disaster struck. Poor Charlie, who was evidently beginning to feel better, kicked out at his stable wall, severing an artery and badly damaging his tendon. Thanks to the amazing efforts of our wonderful friends at Rowe Equine vets, we were able to quickly stop the bleeding

and manage Charlie’s pain. Unfortunately, he is now back on dreaded box rest until we can scan the tendon in the coming weeks. With all of this going on it’s amazing that we did in fact manage to keep the horses’ fitness ticking over during the winter months, and I am pleased to say that plans for an early start in the 2020 season look good to go ahead, with YHC’s Lovely Louis heading off for lessons with Mary King in the next day or two. I am sure Mary will help iron out any creases before the season kicks off! With daylight now creeping past the hour of four o’clock and beyond, our spring countdown has begun! Putting riding and our horses to one side for a moment’s thought, there’s excitement beginning to stir about my favourite time of the year – Badminton!

 Another winter rug trashed, above; far left, Team YHC winter training under way; Lovely Louis gets checked by physio Anna Davison, left

wonderful equine physio Anna Davison will be sure to give all of the horses a good going over, loosening any tightness caused by restricted grazing and spending longer hours in the confines of the stable. Anna will also help with any concerns we have with the horses’ way of going at this time of year, little niggles that may have crept up, before we head out for the new season. The last clips have been carried out, the tack polished and the lorry cleaned. We are starting to think about finding some slightly lighter rugs with slightly milder temperatures ahead. The drain covers in the main stable block are all lifted at this time of year and we remove any excess shavings or dirt that may have found its way underneath.

The paddocks are walked to find any weak or broken fencing and necessary repairs carried out. The tractor and its machinery, all of which have been hibernating in a barn through the harsh winter months, get hauled out for a service as it won’t be long until we start thinking about some restoration paddock maintenance. During March, all of the fields will be fertilised, allowing the slightly warmer rain to wash the nutrients deep into the ground. Come April the ground will be harrowed and then rolled and, finally, come May our fields will

once more resemble the lush meadow-like paddocks the horses love so much! The riding arena will get a good going over too. We will hand rake the deeper outside tracks, pulling any pushed-out surface into the middle, then we will re-level the arena and roll it down. We tend not to use the arena quite as much during the spring months and try where possible to increase our hacking and school the horses on grass, offering a different footing and helping strengthen the horses’ legs as much as possible. Putting riding and our horses to one side for a moment’s thought, there’s excitement beginning to stir about my favourite time of the year – Badminton! This year promises to be most exciting under the guiding hand of new event director Jane Tuckwell and I for one can’t wait to see the thrills of the world’s best combinations take on the world’s toughest event! While I have every finger and toe crossed for a great 2020 season for Team YHC, I wish you and your horse a great season too! 

The Idolo Tether Tie has been a great tool to have around the yard, super easy to use and it’s really handy that we have been able to move it from place to place, whether in the wash-down area, farrier’s bay or on the side of the lorry! It has been especially great for the more fidgety horses that don’t like to stand still, especially when there is a lot of activity on the yard! It gives a gentle but firm reminder that they are tied without the yank or pull on the horse’s neck and head that you might find with more traditional tethering methods. We particularly liked the fact you could use the BHS-approved Idolo product in more than one way, allowing us to apply little or more tension as required. It was really useful on the side of the lorry, too! Alex – Team YHC Head Groom

With so many cases of laminitis linked to what we feed our horses, Jonathan Holmes from Lordington Park looks at how improved grazing is key to prevention

TACKLING LAMINITIS FROM THE GROUND UP

H

orses are fundamentally designed to run and graze for 20 hours a day and sleep for the other four. They would have the choice of what they grazed on, whether it was a herb species that supplied their mineral requirement or a carefully considered grass species delivering the energy they need. Just think what we give them to feed on, or in! It’s often less than their ideal surrounding, but they have to be safe and secure. We are all rushing about being busy, and never seem to have the hours to spend with our animals. My late father was a veterinary surgeon who had an interesting holistic approach to treating all large animals – especially horses. In the 1960s he was using acupuncture and homeopathy to great effect to help alleviate the symptoms of laminitis in the Shires and Friesians that the neighbouring estate used for dragging timber logs out of the woods as they didn’t create any environmental damage. As an equine agronomist I have explored for many years the herb species available to provide succour to our horses when they know that they are lacking a vitamin or mineral. I always include yarrow (Achillea millefolium) in the sward, as it is a diaphoretic herb that improves blood circulation and general blood flow. Both attributes are essential to speed up the rate of healing, and prevention, of laminitis. In recent years I have increasingly come to realise just how important my father’s holistic approach was to manage the environment in which we keep animals. Further research by Marytavy Archer in 1969-70 has confirmed my opinion and given me even greater conviction of purpose. She conducted an extraordinary experiment while studying at university. Essentially, she monitored the species preference of grazing horses, demonstrating an extraordinary level of dedication with 220 hours of study over two years. The results were subject to strict statistical analysis and reviewed by her peers. During the research, 24 ponies and two thoroughbreds were given access to 29 different trial plots that either contained individual grass species (eg. rye grass or Timothy); grass and legumes; grass (fescue species and Timothy) and herbs. It was a staggering investment in time, effort and thought and it was not a surprise to me that all the horses preferred

118  |  SPRING 2020   Your Horse & Country Magazine

the predominately native grasses (fescue species) combined with Timothy, and if those species were enriched with a range of herbs all the horses ate those plots first. One of my specialisations is the application of Albrecht soil science to ensure that grass contains the necessary nutrients that should naturally be available to the horse. Once the soil is put back into balance and the appropriate grass species incorporated into the sward (the upper layers of soil covered in grass) and companion species added to finish the improvement then the likelihood of your horses developing laminitis can be massively reduced – or, in the majority of cases, eliminated all together.

WHAT TO AVOID Ryegrass species – Ryegrass is designed to produce high levels of nonstructured carbohydrate (NSCs) or fructose as sugar, from dietary intake. Fructose is the last thing that the horse’s digestive tract needs, as it can’t digest them. Consequently, the streptococcus bacteria proliferate in the hind gut, destroying the beneficial flora and consequently trigger a laminitic event or, even worse, metabolic syndrome. Clover – All clovers produce and store energy as NSCs. The exceptions to this rule regarding legumes, as they are fantastic for horse environments, are black medic or trefoil species. “Treats” – Apples, carrots, bread, Polos! All contain intense sugar levels. Starvation paddocks – These are a complete misnomer! Short grass is ALWAYS full of sugar (NSCs) as the grass is desperately trying to reproduce biomass, and therefore be tall enough to flower and replicate its genes. The last thing a horse prone to laminitis needs. Cereal grains – Even worse for the horse if they are coated in molasses. Unfortunately, I often encounter environments that generate race horses that are riddled with ulcers and prone to laminitis because of their highenergy diets. Rapidly growing grass – Grass that is rapidly growing, and especially ryegrass, will be full of sugar as fructose as the grass rushes to produce biomass while the ideal weather lasts. Leg injuries – Inadvertently this can generate laminitis in the load-bearing leg/s. A high degree of laminitic incidence occurs when an injury is combined with a high-energy diet.

WHAT TO DO

In recent years I have increasingly come to realise just how important my father’s holistic approach was to manage the environment in which we keep animals

 Ensure that the grazing land is full of fescue species, Timothy and Cocksfoot.  Remove all weeds and introduce companion species to your sward.  Find out what the nutrients are that your soil is lacking and rectify the imbalance. This deficiency in the soil will inevitably be replicated in the grass/hay. Don’t waste your money on a replacement supplement with everything in, as the horse will just excrete what it doesn’t need!  Maintain a high exercise regimen to ensure horse hoof and body health.  Prevent your horses’ hooves from being exposed to prolonged immersion, especially if the water has faecal contamination as this will soften the hooves even more and rapidly increase the likelihood of a laminitic event.  Ensure that there is adequate boron in your soil and hay/haylage. Boron is a key constituent of bone and foot health.  Get all your hay/haylage analysed to assess the carbohydrate content.  If you have a horse or pony that is prone to laminitis, wherever possible feed them more hay than fresh grass. Ideally on a hard-standing outdoors so that they can still interact with the world. If you need help to generate a laminitis-free environment, then contact Lordington Park Agronomy to see how I can help. Jonathan Holmes – Equine Agronomist and Lecturer in Agriculture

HARLOW BROS THROUGH THE YEARS 1920s The worldwide business of Harlow Bros began in the depths of the recession when brothers Reginald and Vernon, who had been making ladders and wheelbarrows in the back garden of the family house, decided to go into business on their own. The business of making small sheds and chicken huts began in a field which was left to them by their mother in Long Whatton, Leicestershire, and that is where the company’s headquarters stands today.

1930s Expansion – Ten years later the business prospered and the 30s saw the brothers employing some 30 members of staff, mainly from the local village. Developing their craft, the brothers moved into making prefabricated wooded bungalows, some of which can still be seen today, 90 years on. Soon Harlow Bros was busy with the manufacture of prefabricated wooden bungalows, sheds, garages and poultry units. 1940s Wartime – World War II brought forced changes to the business. The enterprising Harlow Brothers manufactured air raid shelters as well as ladders for the fire service which was essential during the blitz. In response to imported timber shortages, a sawmill was built for English timber production. Woodland was purchased and timber converted for essential uses like railway sleepers and pit props. 1950/60s Further expansion – The business began manufacturing buildings for export and in the early 1960s more than 600 buildings were shipped to Israel. The looseboxes of earlier times evolved into fine stables built for racecourses in the UK, Europe and the Middle East. An important stable project was constructed at Ascot and opened by the Queen, who congratulated Mr Vernon Harlow on the quality and design of the company’s product. TODAY Still a family-owned operation with Robert, Paul and Rob joining the business in the 1970s/80s, Harlow Bros has continued to grow with the investment into engineered timber/flooring and further branches and manufacturing capabilities across the UK. The Harlow Group employs around 548 people over 13 different sites and has just congratulated a few with a long service award, totalling approximately 856 years’ overall service. To this day, it continues to expand and provide a personal service to each and every customer.

Spring brings so much to look forward to for horse and rider but the enjoyment can easily be spoilt by those seasonal health complaints. Our expert looks at how to help your equine...

VET’S ADVICE with Dr Josefin Jansson DrMedVet MRCVS

W

ith the winter behind us we are finally starting see the days stretching out a little bit longer. It also means that the show season is approaching so it is time to get those training targets and competition goals set. In addition to planning all the fun things it is important to think ahead and consider a few things to make the horse’s transition into the new season as smooth as possible.

THE FRESH GRASS All horse owners should be mindful of the highly nutritious spring grass. Grass grows in temperatures from 4°C and new grass in the spring has a high proportion of soluble sugars, which is a great natural source of energy, vitamins, minerals and water but equally it can be harmful if a very high amount is consumed at once. The main concern with spring pasture is laminitis. It is a devastating and debilitating disease which affects horses of all ages,

INTO

breeds and levels of training and can cause a major setback in training and competition plans. Laminitis can develop any time of the year, but a high-risk time is when there is an abundance of new grass shoots at pasture. Monitoring for laminitis should be done daily and especially the first few weeks after onset of warmer weather. Increased digital pulses in the legs and a stiff gait are both subtle signs of a laminitis episode. Laminitis is considered a veterinary emergency so if a horse is suspected to have the condition, a veterinarian should be called out immediately. Early intervention can be the difference between full recovery and euthanasia. Pasture-induced laminitis can to some extent be prevented by keeping the horse in a healthy body condition and keeping up daily exercise. Obesity and endocrine conditions such as equine metabolic syndrome and equine Cushing’s disease can predispose the horse to laminitis.

FEEDING & DIETARY CHANGES As training intensity increases so does the demand on the horse’s diet to meet increased energy needs. An essential cornerstone for good performance is correct and balanced nutrition. Different workload and disciplines require different energy supply. A good quality forage should be the foundation for all horses’ diets. It would be worth the effort to have a forage sample sent away for analysis, which will tell you the precise nutritional content, and many laboratories will also screen the sample for the presence of harmful toxins such as mycotoxins. The fibre content of the forage cannot be directly digested and utilised by the horse but will travel to the hind gut where the microbes break down the fibre to volatile

EQUINE HEALTH

Insects

Hooves fatty acids, which is a major energy source for the horse. The fibre content in the hind gut will also attract water, which will serve as a reserve and prevent dehydration. Horses that are in light work will most likely only need good quality forage with a broad-spectrum feed balancer providing minerals and vitamins, which should be enough to meet the horse’s daily needs. For horses in moderate to high-intensity work, in addition to forage there is a varying need for supplementary feeding in the form of concentrates containing cooked grains that add additional fast energy in the form of starch and digestible fibre and oil for slow-release energy. Feeding additional protein can help with recovery from hard work and maintaining

Diet

Laminitis

muscle volume but is not a sufficient source of energy. A balancer must always be included in the horse’s diet if there is no grazing available in the turnout. Horses transitioning into work of higher intensity should have their diet adjusted slowly and with caution to avoid complications. Feed little and often – a concentrate feed should not exceed 2.5kg. Introduce a new forage or concentrate feed over several days to avoid upsetting the hind gut microbial flora.

INSECTS With warmer weather comes the return of insects, which, although essential for nature, can be very distressing for the horse. Flies attract around the face and can cause irritations such as conjunctivitis and eye ulcers. A clean, well-fitted fly mask as well as fly repellents can help keep flies at bay. Sweet itch is caused by the bite from the culicoides midge and is the most common allergic skin disease in horses. The symptoms are intense itching, hypersensitive skin and thickening of the skin in the affected areas. The mane and tail is often completely rubbed off by self-mutilation and the skin often breaks and bleeds. Secondary 

Not only is sweet itch devastating for the horse’s appearance and can completely end a showing career but it is extremely distressing for the horse and the owner

Sweet itch is caused by the bite from the culicoides midge – special rugs can can help ward off the bugs, right

bacterial skin infections are often seen as well as injuries from extreme scratching. It can affect any horse, of any age and breed but native breeds are overrepresented. Not only is this devastating for the horse’s appearance and can completely end a showing career but it is extremely distressing for the horse and the owner. Unfortunately, there is no cure or vaccination against sweet itch, but some prevention is possible. Special sweet itch rugs and liberal application of fly repellents can prevent the culicoides accessing the horse’s skin. Other preventative measures are avoiding turnout in dusk and dawn when the midges are more active and avoid turnout near boggy or woody land. If the allergic reaction has already happened there are soothing washes and lotions that can be applied but it is

more to help with the symptoms rather than treat the disease. If the sweet itch is severe a veterinarian should be called out. Corticosteroids can be prescribed and sometimes antibiotics are necessary if there is infection of the skin. Feeding supplements such as vitamin B, biotin, zinc and polyunsaturated fats contributes to healthy skin and hair.

HOOF CARE The two most important factors for healthy hooves in horses is regular trimming by a farrier and good nutrition. Regular trimming of the hooves should be done every four to six weeks to maintain a good hoof balance. If the hoof quality is poor the diet should be evaluated, preferably with input from a veterinarian or a qualified nutritionist. Biotin is a major component of good hoof health Everyday hoof care should not be overlooked

and it is naturally produced in the horse’s hind gut. Any disruption of the hindgut microbial flora will affect the biotin available to the horse. Other nutritional components essential for hoof health are zinc and calcium, which are also fully covered by a complete diet. If needed there are several hoof-specific supplements on the market. In between visits from the farrier, everyday hoof care should not be overlooked. The hooves should be picked out and inspected every day. Sharp stones and gravel that are left lodged in the hoof will eventually cause bruising or hoof abscesses. Standing in constant wet and muddy ground is detrimental for the structural integrity of the hoof, making it soft and porous with diseases following such as thrush. Where possible, there should be an effort made to avoid wet and soggy turnout. Turnout that is too hard, on the other hand, can cause the hooves to chip and crack, painful bruising or even more serious issues such as fractures of the pedal bone. n

HORSE CARE BEGINS WITH HOOF CARE Walnut Hill Equine Veterinary Clinic on the role your horse’s feet play in their health

T

he importance of appropriate hoof care cannot be underestimated in its role in the wellbeing of your horse throughout their life. The old saying “no foot, no horse” could not be truer, with much of the lameness we see today originating from the horse’s foot. General hoof care should be part of your daily routine and encompasses simple management measures such as hoof picking to aid prevention of stone bruises or thrush, or applying a hoof conditioner and giving a hoof supplement if your horse’s hooves are poor or brittle. Should any problems arise with your horse’s feet then you, your farrier and your vet should work together to rectify any issues before they become more serious. A common area in which vets work with farriers is in radiographing the feet for medial-lateral (inside to outside) foot balance. Even minor issues with the balance of the

foot can create added stress on the joints, which can lead to irreversible osteoarthritic changes. Unfortunately, what we’re seeing when looking at the hoof is not always representative of what’s going on inside it, therefore if there’s any doubt about your horse’s foot conformation or if there’s any lameness issues arising from the foot, it’s a good idea to get your vet to perform foot radiographs and your farrier can then use these to try and correct any imbalance issues. Another area where radiographs are readily required by both vets and farriers is in cases of laminitis. Laminitis is an inflammatory condition of the tissues (laminae) that bond the hoof wall to the pedal bone. When the laminae become inflamed, they have nowhere to expand as they are enclosed by the rigid hoof wall, which results in excruciating pain for the horse. In severe cases, the bond between the hoof wall can

p This is a clear example of severe rotation of

the pedal bone with chronic changes to the tip of the pedal bone suggesting severe and longterm laminitic change.

weaken and the pedal bone can rotate or sink within the hoof. Though we typically associate laminitis with overweight ponies who have been gorging on too much sugar, it can affect all breeds of horses and has many different causes. These causes include endocrine disease, overloading of one foot due to pain in a different leg, and severe inflammation or infection anywhere in the body. If your horse suffers an episode of laminitis, it is essential to get your vet and farrier involved from the outset, in order to control pain and minimise any subsequent rotation of the pedal bone.

PRE-SEASON HEALTH CHECK

repeat EAT

SLEEP

Want to sail into eventing season like there’s never been a break? Kathy Carter finds out how...

Y

ou know how some individuals “hit the ground running” when they enter the new season’s equestrian events? Their slimline, shiny equines don’t miss a beat as they gamely canter out of the start box; their dressage tests are foot perfect and their horses relaxed in the adrenaline-fuelled show environment; and neither horse nor rider gets out of breath as they pop over the final show jump. Just how do they do it? The answer is preparation. Motivational speaker Robert Schuller said that “spectacular achievement is always preceded by unspectacular preparation”, which is a great way to sum up the need for a cohesive system. We’re here to help you put a pre-season health check in place, whatever your riding goals.

FIT TO COMPETE The horse that never gets out of breath as they pop over the final show jump has had targeted fitness work. Your horse needs to be at peak fitness for the level and type of work he is doing, as he will be less susceptible to injuries. The fittening process ahead of the spring season simply works by introducing physical and mental stress gradually, so the horse’s body adapts, as follows: Step 1. Ensure equine health; make sure you’re up to date with vaccination, worming, dentistry and farriery programmes. Step 2. Understand changes in your horse’s body that occur as he becomes fitter; e.g. the horse’s skill and co-ordination levels increase, muscle tone develops, bones become stronger, and energy is used differently.

RIDE

Step 3. Put in place a goal; whether it’s a specific event on a particular date, or just a level of fitness relevant to a planned workload. Work backwards with your training and feeding regimes, consulting experts as required. Step 4. Follow a plan; tailor your fittening plan to your own horse’s circumstances, e.g. relating to injury or time off, and schooling issues that need honing. Ask your instructor to help develop a regime.

UTILISE YOUR TIME Many of us struggle to fit in everything when the days are shorter; the longest day isn’t until mid-June! The solution to this reduction in time is to utilise it well. Obvious ideas include multi-tasking on the yard, but making your training sessions shorter and more targeted can help. Lunging is particularly useful if the horse has been ridden less over winter. Start with a snaffle bridle or lunging cavesson; as your horse finds his rhythm, balance and carriage on the lunge, start introducing items like a roller (and eventually a saddle), as well as training gadgets like bungees, side reins or training aids. Think about your plan – what are you hoping to achieve? If you’re honing your jumping, your lunge work could focus on accurate upward and downward transitions, and slicker direct walk-to-canter transitions. If you’re aiming for a dressage event, your horse may benefit from work with a training aid that develops self carriage and “swinging” hindquarters, like a Pessoa or other own-brand version. As lunge sessions are more condensed, you will be doing targeted fitness and flexibility work, but in a reduced time-frame.

HAPPY HACKS Alternate your lunging with other training work like gridwork in the manege, and hacking; remember that

136  |  SPRING 2020   Your Horse & Country Magazine - PRE-SEASON CHECK

hacking can be used to accustom the horse’s legs for competition, but do take it easy, to avoid excessive concussion. Combine roadwork with woodland and grassland hacks – great for developing strength and stamina, especially if you have hills. Gradually increase the duration.

FABULOUS FEEDING In order for the horse to work at his optimum as he gains in fitness, energy used in exercise must be replaced with dietary fuel, which is subsequently utilised by all of the horse's systems. Your feeding regime will therefore change and develop as the horse’s workload adapts. Speak to a feed manufacturer about a tailored feed plan, focusing on a high-fibre-based diet. Supplement wise, vitamin and mineral supplements are useful to provide the essential nutrients required to

Put in place a goal; whether it’s a specific event on a particular date, or just a level of fitness relevant to a planned workload

support different levels of work. Targeted additives for hooves, digestion and joints can also be considered.

NAIL THE WARM-UP Those smug competitors who are cool, calm and collected undoubtedly have a well-practiced warm-up regime that’s in place long before the competition itself. The repetition of practising a standardised warm-up (that’s tailored for the horse, his fitness, his demeanour on show days and his technical level of work) helps you both settle mentally, and aids good work on the day. British Eventing coach Linda De Matteo says forward planning helps you stay focused and relaxed for competing. She advises: “Be positive, and ahead of the contest, imagine performing a beautiful halt in the dressage test, or riding the show jumping course in a good balanced canter. Visualisation helps, as when you come to do it, you’ll feel as if you’ve done it before.”

PERSONAL FITNESS It’s not all about the horse – now’s the time to prepare yourself, too. Consider flexibility activities like pilates, as well as gentle fitness work relative to the riding or competitions you will be doing. Look after your body with good nutrition and hydration, and plenty of sleep, so you’re also fit to compete! Eat, sleep, ride, repeat – you’re there! n

TIPS FOR FEEDING THIS SPRING Finally, after a long winter, spring is on the way and, for a lot of us, it means we will be preparing for the horses to be out for longer. While this is brilliant for you (less mucking out!) and your horses, Telissa Blowers BSC (Hons), equine nutritionist at Allen & Page Quality Horse Feeds, explains that there will be some things we need to adjust for spring. THE BUCKET FEED Throughout winter, horses will often be fed a higher calorie feed, but those extra calories may not be needed as we move into spring. Consequently, a low-calorie feed (8-9Mj/kg) such as Veteran Light will help to maintain an ideal body condition score and provide a fully balanced diet (when fed at recommended amounts). Keeping a correct body condition score will also be particularly important for the laminitics out there. For those with a history of laminitis, it is essential to provide them with a diet suitable for laminitics as they are more predisposed to the condition reoccurring. Laminitics should be provided with a diet high in fibre and low in starch and sugar; cereal grains and added sugars such as molasses should be avoided. Specifically, research into the condition has also shown feeds with a combined starch and sugar of below 10% to be most beneficial. Veteran Light is free from cereal grains, added sugar and has a combined starch and sugar level of below 10%, making it suitable to feed. When selecting your horse's bucket feed for this time of the year, it is also a good idea to look at the type of energy a feed is providing the horse. Spring grass is notorious for causing excitable behaviour, so providing a feed which uses fibre and oil may be more suited. Fibre and oil sources provide slow-release, stamina-type energy, as opposed to a feed containing cereal grains that will give quickrelease, “oomph” energy.

GRASS Grass contains “simple sugars” and fructans (the storage form of sugar found in the stem). These sugars will only be produced during daylight hours when photosynthesis occurs. Plants will transform energy from sunlight into a useable form, fuelling growth which is at its peak during this time of the

year. Sugars and fructans are also known as water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC). If the horse consumes high amounts, this increases their risk of suffering from laminitis, weight gain, digestive upsets (such as colic) and/or fizzy behaviour. When first turning out it may be beneficial to use strip grazing or muzzling to reduce the horse’s grass and calorie intake.

FIBRE Horses are naturally grazing animals who

should be eating for at least 18 hours a day – evolving to consume large amounts of fibre such as hay, haylage and grass. Continuing to mimic their natural grazing behaviours will help to maintain a healthy digestive system. During the spring, hay is preferable when compared to haylage, as there are fewer calories. To further reduce the calorie content, hay can be soaked, ideally for around 12 to 16 hours (although if this isn't possible, a little time soaking is better than none at all).

- for horses & ponies prone to laminitis As a horse owner, you should take into consideration your horse or pony’s diet with the changing of the seasons. The growth of new grass typically seen in the spring can significantly increase the risk posed to those prone to laminitis. If your horse or pony is prone to laminitis, it should be fed a low sugar, low starch and high fibre diet. It is important not to starve horses and ponies prone to laminitis as this can cause further problems. You should choose a forage such as High Fibre or Timothy HorseHage, and, ideally, a complete feed, low in starch and sugar, that is suitable for horses and ponies prone to laminitis.

WELFARE & REHOMING

HELPING AN EQUINE IN CRISIS L

ast year, we showcased the stories of some lovely readers who had successfully rehomed rescued equines that had gone onto competitive success. It’s wishful thinking, however, to hope that the ongoing horse crisis has abated; there are still reportedly too many horses and not enough responsible homes for them in Great Britain. Taking on a rescued equine should therefore be the first port of call for anyone looking to take on a horse or pony. “Don’t just look at the horses as they are now; imagine what they could become in the future,” advises Emma Hopkinson, who successfully rehomed Elvis from World Horse Welfare. “There are so many horses out there that deserve a second chance.”

DEFINING A CRISIS Is it over-dramatising the situation, to call it a “horse crisis”? The equine charities think not. Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s Nic de Brauwere, head of welfare and behaviour, says the number of horses reported to Redwings as having been abandoned has risen over the last couple of years. “The figures have risen from 185 in 2017, to 212 in 2018, and then 263 in 2019,” he explains. Nic, also a veterinary surgeon, believes that while things have improved since the shocking peak in equine abandonment around seven years ago, the recent rise in numbers is a sign of a continued horse crisis that’s due primarily to overbreeding. “Alongside welfare calls, we also receive a lot of requests to take in horses from homes where the owners are struggling to continue to care for their horses, or they simply wish to retire their animals,” he explains. “Due to the horse crisis, Redwings – and many equine welfare charities across the country – are working at capacity, seeing horses that have increasingly complex care needs that

Eco Equine Surfaces

est 2009

require significant resources to rehabilitate back to good health. This means that sadly we have to decline the majority of requests from owners, to ensure we retain the space in the sanctuary to help those horses in most desperate need,” he says.

DIFFICULT DECISIONS Sarah Hollister, equine welfare yard manager at HorseWorld, says her charity also has to make difficult decisions about the horses they’re able to take in. “As a rescue charity, it’s essential that we have the capacity to accept the horses that are in the most desperate and urgent need. For this reason, we are usually unable to take in horses who have caring owners, unless in exceptional circumstances,” Sarah explains. The last 12 months has seen an increase in the closure of smaller equine charities and sanctuaries, such as Sussex Horse Rescue, which cited severe financial distress. In this particular instance, Redwings took on 19 needy equines from the sanctuary. “This ‘closure’ situation sees large numbers of horses urgently needing relocating, which in turn puts more strain on the resources of other organisations who have to respond and take the animals in,” Sarah explains. “Most owners who contact HorseWorld are dealing with more than one problem, which is forcing them to give up their animal, and there is almost always a financial element involved. Often the owner is facing challenges with their physical and/or mental health too, and sometimes they have been left with the horse after a child has moved away from home, or a relationship has ended,” she adds.

LATE WINTER – CRISIS PERIOD FOR VULNERABLE EQUINES? We asked our experts whether there’s a seasonal link to equine abandonment.

Redwings’ Nic de Brauwere acknowledges that most requests to rehome horses from private homes come primarily at the start of a year. “On average there are 64% more requests to Redwings during January to March, compared to July to September,” he says. “Generally, caring for a horse in the colder and wetter months is more challenging, especially if they are older or have ongoing medical issues.” Sam Chubbock, head of UK support at World Horse Welfare, also sees seasonality. “There are many reasons for needing to rehome a horse, with health of the owner or family member being the most frequent one. “Financial issues and a change in circumstances, which could be bereavement, divorce, redundancy, birth u

REDUCING COSTS

Owning a horse can be expensive, but there are ways to reduce costs where you can, as long as this doesn’t compromise your horse’s health and welfare. Here are some tips for anyone struggling to care for their horse, or that of a family member. l Don’t wait to address the situation, if equine welfare or health issues arise. If finances are an issue, look at where savings can be made in your outgoings. Feeding-wise, bulk-bought, budget forages and cubes can, for example, save you a great deal of money (but may need extra supplementation with a broad-spectrum additive or balancer). Consider whether your horse could live out – many equines thrive under this regime with suitable feed and management, thus making a saving on stabling costs. Is renting a field with a shelter a possibility? Look out for second-hand items like rugs and tack, and sell on your own unwanted items, to raise funds. Explore other livery solutions, like working livery, that could help reduce your costs; and see what expenditure can be reduced, like competing, or running a lorry. u

THE HORSE TRUST The Horse Trust is the oldest horse charity in the world. Although we specialise in providing lifelong retirement for ex-working horses from the military, police, Royal Mews, and charities such as the RDA, we also rescue, rehabilitate and rehome those horses and ponies in desperate need of treatment and care. Jenga is one of our success stories. He was rescued from a field in Hertfordshire in November 2012, emaciated, full of worms and suffering from a severe bacterial infection. He was sent

immediately to the Royal Veterinary College for emergency treatment and around-theclock care. Jenga was so weak he had to be lifted to his feet daily. It is now hard to imagine him as the same sick and lifeless foal that arrived. He was backed to ride by our equine trainer Jen, which led to him being rehomed locally in May last year by Kelly Gordon, left with Jenga, and her daughter Chloe. Jenga is absolutely adored in his new home and has already got a number of prizes under his belt from local shows, including best rescue in the ridden class.

THE WORLD’S OLDEST HORSE CHARITY For over 130 years our Home of Rest for Horses has specialised in providing retirement and respite for working horses and ponies. These hard-working equine public servants have served our nation in the Police, the Army or with charities such as Riding for the Disabled. We also provide sanctuary to horses, ponies and donkeys who have suffered from cruelty or neglect and who are in desperate need of specialist treatment and care. It is at our Home of Rest for Horses that we demonstrate best practice and deliver professional training in horse care and welfare. We have invested in funding veterinary research that has led to major advances in horse care. This training and research helps develop the knowledge and skills needed to improve the care, welfare and quality of life of all horses. From our very first day on 10th May 1886 we have relied entirely on donations from the general public to support our work. of a child etc, also figure highly,” Sam says. “For many people who may be struggling on and coping through the rest of the year, it can be the arrival of winter which is the final straw. Lack of daylight, poor weather and increased food costs can be the catalyst for owners to realise they can no longer cope with their animals.”

WHY REHOME A HORSE? If you are considering giving an equine a home, rehoming not only helps a rescued horse begin a new chapter, but horse

lovers will also be opening up space in a sanctuary, to help more horses in need. New rehomers are given a horse’s full medical and behavioural history before committing to taking them home, and the charities typically retain ownership of that horse for the rest of its life, should the rehomer’s circumstances change. Rehoming can be preferable to buying, as extensive, honest information on the equine is provided, as well as a lifetime of support from the charity. MARVELLOUS MOGGIES While you are being altruistic, could you offer an outbuilding at an equestrian facility to a cat? Feral cats are also in need of rehoming, and make excellent rodent-catchers at horsey properties. They’re a safe solution to rodent problems, and are pretty independent, as aside from food, water and vet care if needed, feral cats (under-

socialised cats that are considered unadoptable as a pet) do look after themselves. In return, they provide pest control and companionship. Charities like SNIP offer adoptees a spayed or neutered, microchipped cat with all relevant health checks in place. Visit www.snipcats.org

 There’s also a reported prevalence of individuals rescuing a horse, but then discovering they cannot cope with it, either for financial reasons or because the horse has behavioural issues. If you’re finding a horse too much for you, seek help. For example, is there an experienced rider who could help with riding and training in return for sharing your horse? If you’re financially able, could you pay a trainer to assist? If you’ve rehomed an equine from a charity and need assistance with training or behavioural issues, contact them as soon as you can, to mutually find a solution.  Look for a sharer (or sharers!) to split the financial cost of horse ownership. Many riders are only too pleased to become “horse owners” in this way,

with less commitment. (Ideally, both parties should sign a loan agreement.) An even larger number may be willing to assist you and share the riding, but may not have the finances to pay you. Consider this option, in case this frees up time for you to earn more money to help with ongoing horse-care costs.  If your own ill health is an issue, seek help as soon as you can – riding and animal companionship come with many benefits. Even if you’re no longer able to ride, could you develop a new ground-based relationship with the horse, for example? Could friends and family help you through a difficult period of ill health or treatment with horse care? Perhaps a local equine college student could assist in a shortterm capacity?  If you’ve been left with a horse after a child has moved away to study, seek short-term ways to keep the horse in your care, e.g. at monitored grass livery. Brainstorm ways that the family member could contribute financially to the horse’s care. 

Bransby Horses launch revolutionary new rehoming process Have you ever heard of a partner-finding website for horses? At Bransby Horses, we have turned the rehoming ‘norm’ on its head and are paving the way for a new equine rehoming process, launched on Valentine’s Day 2020. We have designed a strategy to ensure we receive more ‘right fit, first time’ rehoming applications in the future.

‘Toni and Raph, (of Bransby Horses) rehomed 2019.’ by Luisa Scammel at www.lightofwild.com

Rehoming has always been an important part of our charity. It gives companion and ridden equines, who have had a tough start in life, a second chance to live a happy and healthy life and realise their potential, in a one-toone home. Many equines live on the site at Bransby in Lincolnshire but there are many more living in great foster homes across the country, having found their perfect partner.

‘Toni and Raph, (of Bransby Horses) rehomed 2019.’ by Dawn Saffery Photography www.dawnsafferyphotography.com

Our fosterers are very much part of the Bransby Horses family, and because of them, we can rescue more horses and take time to recover from the recent flooding. The new online application process is smooth, easy to follow and it will allow our Rehoming team to more efficiently match potential Perfect Partners to the right equines. The matching process will be based on the potential Perfect Partner's ability, experience, personality and potential. All applicants will be asked to agree to eight key care promises, before proceeding to the main part of the application. Applicants will then be asked a series of questions designed to assess their qualities as a potential equine fosterer. If an immediate match can’t be made, they will then have regular contact from us, to check the status of their ongoing search.

Rosanna Elliott Hart, Rehoming Manager at Bransby Horses said: “There are so many reasons why this is a good idea. We love the interest we get in our equines; we just want to make sure those applying understand what is involved in rehoming, from the start. Some of the applicants we currently get don’t fully complete the forms or agree to all the necessary criteria. By making these changes, we are improving the quality of the applications coming through to us, so our team can focus on making the right match and supporting our ‘fosterer family’ across the country.” If you would like to rehome an equine from Bransby Horses and think you have the knowledge and skills to do so, please visit www.bransbyhorses. co.uk/rehoming to start the journey to finding your Perfect Partner. Rehoming from Redwings If you’re thinking about welcoming a new four-legged friend into your family, why not consider rehoming a rescued horse from Redwings? For over 10 years, Redwings Horse Sanctuary has been helping rescued horses find loving homes through its Guardianship Scheme. In 2019, Redwings opened a new rehoming centre at their Caldecott Visitor Centre in Norfolk, and the finishing touches are currently being put in place for new rehoming facilities at their Oxhill Visitor Centre in Warwickshire. Each horse has to work through an extensive list of areas of training before he or she can be rehomed, and so they experience lots of different scenarios, from rug fitting and veterinary interventions, to seeing large vehicles around the farm, pushchairs, bicycles and multi-coloured umbrellas! That way, the team tries to prepare them for the things they may come across outside Redwings, and set them up for success in their new home!

To apply to become a Redwings Guardian, visit www.redwings.org.uk/rehoming, or keep an eye on the Redwings social media channels. They currently rehome in East Anglia, across Central England and in Central and South Wales. Rehoming a Redwings horse is free, but the charity requests a £50 deposit for their passport and welcomes any donations to help fund the future training of the horses in its care. As a Guardian, you’ll be responsible for the day-to-day care of your Redwings horse, but the Rehoming team will always be on the end of the line if you need advice. Guardians take on horses from Redwings on a permanent loan basis to safeguard their welfare and to ensure they have a home should their Guardian’s circumstances change, but the charity always aims to find permanent homes where they will be loved and cherished for the rest of their lives.

At the centre we rehabilitate horses after surgery and offer time off after injury. We can provide box-rest at any time or when the rider/owner feels the horse needs help to render him or her sounder, safer and more rideable. We have lots of experience of working with the rider to improve confidence and understanding so a sustainable improvement can be achieved that will last. We care deeply about the horse’s comfort and soundness and are knowlegeable when this goes wrong. We can take horses in for a few weeks and work with or without the rider, whichever is needed to ensure improvement. Longer-term arrangements can be discussed if required. Call Mary for a chat on 07929 666408 or visit the centre in West Sussex. We are a charity and we keep the cost affordable for all and are here to help if we can.

After all our four legged friends do for us, the least we can do for them is to make sure they will be safe and happy in all eventualities. This Peace of Mind scheme HAPPA are offering is a wonderful option. Mary King,

Going the extra mile for working animals Charity calls on riders to sign up to join MyHackathon 2020

B

rooke, Action for Working Horses and Donkeys is calling on supporters to take part in this year’s MyHackathon challenge. Now in its fourth year, the challenge urges riders to get in the saddle and ride 100 miles in 100 days and raise £100 through sponsorship to help working horses, donkeys and mules around the world. The challenge is free to sign up to, and supporters can either take part alone or share the distance with friends. Riders are encouraged to complete their challenge by 31 October. There are prizes for different fundraising achievements including t-shirts, rosettes and certificates. For £100, Brooke could provide a community with a permanent water trough for its animals, train two farriers to trim and balance hooves properly, or support women’s groups that give female owners the skills that will benefit them and their animals for a lifetime. Riders can join the official MyHackathon Facebook group and share their progress and support others taking part. Brooke supporter Lex Whitby took part in the challenge last year as a way of regaining her confidence after a nasty fall in 2016. She said: “I’m honest when I say that without this challenge I would have just carried on taking tiny little baby steps, but having a goal to work towards has given

t Lex Whitby said the goal of riding 100 miles in 100 days helped her to regain her confidence after an accident

me an immense amount of determination and motivation to get out and ride. With the time frame of 100 days I am literally counting down the days and adding up the miles.” Brooke works across Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America to bring lasting change to the lives of horses, donkeys and mules working in some of the

world’s most punishing environments. By riding just three or four miles each week, you can hit the 100-mile target and know that you are helping to transform the lives of working animals and the families who depend on them. n Visit www.thebrooke.org/ myhackathon to register and find out more.

Working cats for Farms and Stables SNIP was formed in 1983 to solve feral cats fighting, calling and producing endless litters of kittens on the streets of Islington. Over three decades we have evolved into a charity that specialises in finding a future for London’s feral cats and cats that don’t want to be handled.

There is cat overpopulation in inner cities all across England and Wales and too many kittens are born to too few good homes. The future for feral or very timid cats can be bleak as most charities don’t have the resources to find farm homes and deliver and set up release pens, so SNIP specialise in finding homes outside the city for them. SNIP ferals are from many charities large and small. They are neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, healthy and ready to start life again as working cats enjoying an independent country life. In late December we delivered 2 young feral cats to Jeanette and Megan Elphick at their stables in Worcestershire. Megan is a producer and event rider with popular social media channels on Instagram and Youtube focused on eventing, horse care and lots more. Her Elphick Event Ponies youtube vlog on the cats, now called Merry and Pippin, has followed their story from their arrival at the yard, homing them in a release cage to settling down in their new stables home. Megan says looking after them for the first two weeks was easy: "SNIP supplied and set up their cage with bed, litter and food. Just shy of two weeks we let them out for an hour or so in the feed room then they went back in the cage at night, Merry was more friendly and strokable, Pippin more timid. When we released them they were sweet, a little bit cautious, slowly exploring the stables and going back to the cage to be fed and sleep. Now Pippin is roaming all over the place and hunting, Merry is more people friendly and likes to be around us at the stables. They were a bit scared of the horses at first but now they are very relaxed, sitting on the stable doors and being around them." Megan says that the new recruits have made an impact on the rodents too "Literally not a trace of rat since they came! Everything they catch is from outside of the barn" SNIP cats are delivered with a full starter pack (large release pen, comfy bed, food and litter tray) to give them the best possible start in their new home. A barn or stable that is dry and comfortable where the cats can see and smell their new territory to acclimatise is important. They stay in their release pen for approximately 14 days and need fresh food and clean water once or twice a day and fresh litter in their tray. Our service is free but we always welcome donations to keep us going and we’d love to hear from anyone who would like to help us with fundraising events and appeals.

Rehoming from World Horse Welfare World Horse Welfare is the UK’s biggest equine rehoming organisation with more than 1,900 horses and ponies in homes and around 300 at our four Rescue and Rehoming Centres. Horses come into our care for a variety of reasons but our aim with each is to rehabilitate them and find them a home of their own when they’re ready. If you rehome one of our horses or ponies you’ll get an honest assessment of their capabilities and temperament, a thorough ‘MOT’, expert support always available and the reassurance that, if anything changes, they can come back to us as we retain ownership of the horse for the rest of their life.

Could you offer the perfect home for one of our horses?

Here are just a few of the World Horse Welfare ponies available for rehoming now Mickey is a 13-year-old 14.1hh Thoroughbred Cross gelding who is looking for a home as a companion. Mickey loves coming in for a groom so would thrive in a home where he can have plenty of attention from his handler. Mickey is based at Belwade Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre, in Aberdeenshire.

Lady is a 14hh six-year-old cob-type mare who is looking for a home as a project pony. She has a really sweet nature and hasn’t been fazed by anything in her education so far, picking everything up really quickly. Lady is based at Glenda Spooner Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre, in Somerset.

Clyde is a 13-year-old 12.3hh Welsh Section B gelding who is looking for a home as a companion. He is a lovely, friendly pony who gets on well with people and ponies alike. Clyde was crowned Reserve Champion Rescue Pony at Equifest in 2019. Clyde is based at Penny Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre, in Lancashire.

Kinder is a two-year-old 12.3hh cob who is looking for an experienced rehomer who can continue her education. She is an inquisitive young pony and has the potential to be backed to ride when she is old enough. Kinder is based at Hall Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre, in Norfolk.

Do you know your payload before you drive to an event?

It is very easy to overload a 3500kg horsebox, and even a 7500kg one, as most people don’t take into account passengers, tack, water, hay, and these add to the payload considerably. For example, an empty 3500kg horsebox normally weighs about 2500kg, leaving 1000kg for the driver and passenger, horse, tack, etc. Many of these horseboxes are stalled for two horses, and that can be a big problem. If you are overloaded and have an accident, your insurance will be invalidated and you could be facing a number of offences, both overloading and licence ones. In recent years, the DVSA has found that more than 80% of LCV’s stopped on the roadside on suspicion of overloading, are in fact overweight.

Why Uprating You have a limited payload capacity and wish to carry an extra horse or equipment. You don’t want to buy a newer, bigger horsebox so you can save money by converting your current vehicle. You want to avoid a large fine by DVSA.

What to do if you are overloaded. The first thing is to weigh your horsebox FULLY LOADED with your horse(s), tack, water, food, and passengers so that you know where you stand. Remember to weigh each axle individually as you may find that whilst you may be under the Gross Vehicle Weight, you have actually overloaded the rear axle. This is very common in lightweight horseboxes. Fortunately SvTech can help, and is keen to promote its uprating service for lightweight horseboxes (3500kg), whereby the horsebox can gain an extra 200-300kg in payload. This provides vital payload capability when carrying an extra horse and/ or tack and offers peace of mind for the owner.

SvTech has carried out extensive work and testing on lightweight models and has covered uprates for most lightweight vehicles. It is worth noting that some uprates require modifications or changes to the vehicle’s braking, tyres and/or suspension, for which SvTech provides a simple purpose-built suspension assister kit. This will take between 1-2 hours for you to fit. Your horsebox will then go for a formal inspection to bring it into the ‘Goods’ category, and, depending on the vehicle’s age, may also require fitment of a speed limiter, for which there are one or two options. Most importantly, vehicles registered after May 2002 must be fitted with manufacturer’s ABS, if going above 3500kg.

We can start the ball rolling by asking customers to fill in an enquiry form and send it back with photos of the Horsebox plate, the weight ticket and Registration Document.
