I, Malvolio
Sarah Millican - Outsider
Written and Performed by Tim Crouch Image: Greg Veit
Think Monty Python and Blackadder as Tim Crouch shoves Shakespeare’s pent-up steward Malvolio into the spotlight to hilarious effect, turning the entire story of Twelfth Night on its head. A charged, hilarious and sometimes unsettling rant from a man adrift in front of a cruel audience. This is a show for anyone who has ever been told off, called a name or has fallen in love with the wrong person. Tim Crouch is one of Britain’s most innovative and respected theatre-makers – and a hugely experienced exponent of Shakespeare for young people.
In the past when you put Sarah Millican outside, she asked things like: ‘Why? Where is the taxi? Do I need a cardie?’ and said things like: ‘There’ll be wasps. I’ve nothing to sit on. Is that poo? Can we go home?’
“Crouch’s 60-minute I, Malvolio was originally created… as a way of introducing restless teenage audiences to Shakespeare; but there’s nothing anything less than fully adult about this searing deconstruction of the conflict between Malvolio and – well, who?” Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman

Stig of the Dump
Mark Steel Who Do You Think I am?
Barney is staying with his grandparents on the chalk Downs of southern England when he falls over the edge of an old chalk pit and tumbles through the roof of a hidden den. When he looks round he sees Stig, a caveman, with shaggy black hair and bright black eyes. The chalk pit is disused and full of people’s dumped rubbish, which Stig uses to make his home.
Barney and Stig get on rather well together. They have to manage without language, as Stig speaks no English, but that doesn’t seem to stop them. Stig becomes Barney’s secret friend, not because Barney doesn’t tell anyone, but because no one believes that Stig is real. They have a great time, improving Stig’s den, collecting firewood, going hunting, and even catching some burglars who break into Barney’s grandparents’ house.
It never really bothered me that I’d never met my mum.
It is nearly 50 years since Stig and Barney’s adventures first saw the light of day but this timeless children’s classic remains as charming and entertaining as ever.

It never occurred to me I needed to meet her to find out who I was, as it didn’t seem likely I’d discover I was someone different to who I thought I was. Could it turn out I was three stone lighter than I thought, or I spoke Italian or supported Arsenal or had a fear of Liquorice Allsorts? But after the birth of my own son, I realised it’s quite an event to have a child, and she may well remember giving birth to me, and maybe even the adoption. “Profound yet funny” Sunday Times

Dracula *
The Joke
The Hunter Becomes The Hunted!
Produced by Fuel
An Englishman, Irishman and Scotsman got trapped in a joke... ‘How do we get out?’ said the Englishman ‘Just stop telling it’ said the Irishman ‘But we’re too far in!’ said the Scotsman All three checked their phones for reception. The Theatre Royal Margate is proud to present the Premiere of The Joke - a new play from comedy award winner Will Adamsdale and company - exploring jokes and why we tell them, countries and why we need (and despair of) them, and life and why we bother. And tic tacs.
Bram Stoker’s dark tale is brought to life by our incredible Youth Theatre members. We dive head first into this terrifying story, flavouring it with the touch of anarchic comic energy that this group have become known for. But this is no parody. This is Dracula in its raw, terrifying and spine-tingling form. This adaptation of Stoker’s famous tale is written and directed by professional actor/director/ and playwright Martin Gibbons (The Pantaloons). His plays have been growing in popularity throughout the country, and this is your chance to catch this brand new adaptation before anyone else!

As well as being acclaimed for his formidable live performances, Jools has maintained a prolific recording career since signing to Warner Music in 1996, which includes the multimillion selling Jools Holland and Friends series. Notable ‘friends’ have included Sting, Chrissie Hynde, George Harrison, Norah Jones, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Bono, Joe Strummer, KT Tunstall, Robert Plant, Smokey Robinson, Ringo Starr, Peter Gabriel, Solomon Burke and many more. Jools’ career as a television presenter has run parallel to his musical career. He started in the early 1980s when he interviewed The Police for a documentary that was made while they were recording at George Martin’s Montserrat studio. Jools then auditioned to become co-presenter (with Paula Yates) of The Tube, which achieved almost immediate cult status and discovered a whole new generation of musicians and comedians between
1981 and 1986. After presenting two series of Juke Box Jury in 1989 and then 26 shows of The Happening in 1990, Jools was asked in 1992 to host a new music programme for BBC2, which combined his talent and experience as a musician with his skills as a TV presenter. This was Later... with Jools Holland. The show has reawakened the innovative spirit of The Tube, and will start its 46th series in April. As always, Jools continues to dazzle audiences across the UK with his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra and their exuberant live performances. Theatre Royal Margate Associate Companies
Theatre Royal Margate will be supporting the following Kent based companies to create and present work to audiences in Margate and beyond. Mischievous Theatre, Third Party and StevensonThompson have all been chosen because they make relevant, exciting and accessible work which we want to see more of, especially here in Margate. We’re proud to be able to showcase their work at the Theatre Royal, with the ambition of helping them reach a wider audience. Mischievous Theatre CIC, based in Ramsgate and led by Clive Holland, was formed to create stimulating, provocative and mischievous theatre, to tour this work both nationally and internationally, and to encourage a greater involvement in the arts by the people of East Kent.
In collaboration with Third Party we have produced, to great acclaim, “The Sagas of Noggin the Nog”, which was a huge hit at the Edinburgh Festival. The five star reviewed show will tour nationally from October 2015. Mischievous presented a work in progress of their experimental new production “I Have Lost Myself” about the world of Alzheimer’s Disease, here in May. The company’s association with Theatre Royal Margate has enabled us to move forward with added confidence and conviction in our work. www.mischievoustheatre.co.uk Third Party has been producing touring theatre for twenty years in the UK and abroad, playing theatres, village halls, festivals and found spaces. The bulk of their recent work has been in collaboration with director John Wright and has featured strongly visual and physically expressive versions of classic plays. In 2009 they premiered their two language, two country co-production of “The False Servant” by Marivaux at the Theatre Royal Margate. In 2012, Third Party adapted the children’s classic The Sagas of Noggin the Nog for the stage, directed by John Wright. Following previews here at the Theatre Royal, the show went to the Edinburgh Festival in August 2014
to rave reviews, including 4 stars from the Independent and The Stage. Third Party and Mischievous Theatre are currently collaborating on a new and exciting project in search of new audiences for theatre… watch this space! www.thirdparty.org.uk Stevenson Thompson and the Moving Memory Company celebrate life-long creativity via projects that empower and equip older women with new performance skills. The company was created to challenge views of being an ‘old’ woman, of beauty, and to give older women the opportunity and a presence in the theatre world. Our work considers the funny side of things, the stuff of life. In order to reach as diverse an audience as possible, we often performance in public spaces, such

as the streets, as well as theatre spaces. Our in-house company, MovingMemory is a company of women aged between 52-82, who produce work that makes Jo-public think again. The work is inspired by the stories the women bring with them, or their views and experiences of the world. Like the women, the work is gutsy, funny and moving. We are delighted to be associates to the Theatre Royal and want to extend our work in Thanet. We are setting up a new group in Margate, so if you’re interested, please email stevensonthompson@gmail.com. www.stevensonthompson.com

Theatre Royal Adult Company This year we are embarking on a brand new adventure! We are setting up a community theatre group for adults of all ages. The key aim of this group will to be to support a safe creative space for adults. Here you will have freedom to be creative, whilst being supported by a professional theatre maker. The focus of the group will be very different to usual ‘amateur’ companies. This will be a place where you can create your own work, have endless stimulus to devise, improvise, and be part of a brand new (none judgmental) creative community. No previous experience necessary, but all abilities welcome! Theatre Royal Youth Theatre and Adult Company programme: 7-11s: Saturday afternoons 5pm-6pm (Hartsdown Leisure Centre) 12 week terms, limited places: £50 per term

We actively seek to bring together young people from all backgrounds and want to give them the opportunity to learn theatrical skills towards careers, or just for fun - learning how to communicate through voice, body, sign language and beyond. We work in diverse peer groups; and the biggest skill of all – to not only learn lines, physicality and cues but most importantly to support each other on and off stage so that no-one is ever left out. Led by Zoe and Peter Hammond alongside a large team of volunteers, all sessions are BSL signed. Members work towards a professionally supported show performed in the Theatre each Summer. So whether you feel that you “don’t fit in” at school/college, you want to make new friends, you love being around people, or you want to work in one of the most rewarding and fun groups ever... Then Inspiration is for you! Inspiration Inclusive programme: Tuesday evenings 5pm – 6.50pm term time only. £3 per session (voluntary subs), at Queens Road Baptist Church, Broadstairs To join the group please first contact the leaders on: Inspiration-inc@hotmail.co.uk 07792 684227 Full details of our Theatre Groups can be found on the Theatre Royal website.
