Welcome to our latest theatres’ brochure May we be the first to wish you a very Happy New Year! Once again we have been hard at work attracting high calibre shows and events to Margate, just for you. And so this season gets 2015 off to a flying start, with an eclectic mix of national tours, one off performances, old friends, new faces and a showcase of local talent. At the Winter Gardens this January we are hosting Noel Fielding for the first time. Noel is a multi-award winning comedian who is probably best known for the television programme The Mighty Boosh. Sticking with comedy, the venue sees the return of Lee Nelson with a brand new look and show in April. Over at the Theatre Royal, Radio 4 fans will be rubbing their hands in glee! We are very excited to be welcoming Count Arthur Strong AND John Shuttleworth to this comedy – friendly venue. Plus there’s a welcome return by Rich Hall and a first ever visit here by the hugely popular Fascinating Aïda (book early). And the cherry on the cake – Miles Jupp enjoyed his last visit so much, he’s chosen to record his next DVD here in February! Margate Theatres are especially proud to be working collaboratively with Turner Contemporary this Spring on a number of projects. Following the success of The Red Ladies in summer 2014, Clod Ensemble return with an extraordinary new piece of performance storytelling, The Red Chair – performed in the gallery. Also at Turner we present The Boy Who Bit Picasso for children over 4.
2
But the high points have to be the TWO visits by Jasmin Vardimon Company – to bring Park to the Theatre Royal in February and then, in collaboration with Turner Contemporary, their new work Maze to the Winter Gardens in April. These visits have been made possible by Arts Council England funding, and we are thrilled to be welcoming such a prestigious company to Margate. Look out for schools workshops and outreach activity in the spring. Calling all gamers! February Half Term means only one thing, the return of G.E.E.K. (Games Expo East Kent). In 2014 we saw 3500+ gamers of all ages and from all over the UK, descend on the venue. Over the years this event has grown from strength to strength, we are very excited to see what is in store this time round. Theatre Royal Margate is delighted to announce that following a successful bid to Arts Council England, it is now part of a pioneering national consortium of venues committed to promoting Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) touring theatre over a 3 year period. Black Theatre Live kicks off in February with Shakespeare’s classic Macbeth - directed by Jatinder Verma and set in modern India. Whilst in traditional style, Shakespeare’s Globe return with Romeo and Juliet in April. If you were one of the people who missed Act 2 when the storm hit Shakespeare on the Beach last summer – here’s your chance to find out what happened!

We continue our work with Fuel – who have brought us so many exceptional theatre shows already. This season, they bring us Tortoise in a Nutshell, who will be reimagining their Fringe First award winning show Feral for Margate in March. It’s the simple story of a town, presented beautifully and brilliantly by this young company. This will be pretty special. In fact, great theatre is what we do. Just check out the pages that follow and you’ll spot some more real gems. No season here would be complete without live music. We have a broad selection of artists and genres to appeal to all ages. The winner of X-Factor 2013, Sam Bailey starts us off at the Winter Gardens, followed two music legends: April sees the return of Simple Minds, and celebrating 25 years of hits we have a very special evening with Texas in May. The Theatre Royal also has plenty to keep your toes tapping with Steeleye Span, Showaddywaddy and The Searchers, and in contrast is pleased to be welcoming Opera Up Close back for their third visit – this time with Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. With so much good stuff to see right here in Margate – how are you going to fit it all in?! Paul Palmer Entertainments and Facilities Manager Pam Hardiman Programme Manager

Big Comedy Spectacular This will not just be any old comedy night, but a Big Comedy Spectacular! Over the past few years the Theatre Royal Margate has become the place to see major comedy talent, typically only seen on television panel shows or massive sell out arena tours. This night of excellent comedy is a great opportunity for circuit comedians to entertain audiences on the same stage as some of the comedy greats of our time. The compere together with the three professional comedians who are booked for this spectacular may just be next year’s stadium fillers, a lucky dip of spectacular comedy chosen especially for the Theatre Royal. “Live comedy is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.” (Forrest Gump would have wanted to say this). As part of their business community engagement programme, Business Computer Solutions have sponsored this event.
Date for your diary: The next Big Comedy Spectacular is on 21st May 2015. Running Time: Approx 2 hours inc interval Ages: 18+ Tickets: £10, Friends 2 for £15

This entertaining expedition into unknown territories of comedy, excitement and musical gaiety will enthral audiences of all generations. BRAVO! 366 Days of Kindness
Jackson – Live in Concert Starring Ben and his incredible live band & dancers
Photo: Gerard Kyd
We’re delighted to be bringing our show to Margate, after a sell out national and U.S tour. On August 18th 2011, in response to the UK riots and after a chance encounter in a post office, Bernadette Russell embarked on a mission to be kind to a stranger every single day for a year. The show, part stand up, part storytelling, part live documentary, charts this amazing year, which began with burning buildings, and ended with the flame of the Olympic torch. Featuring a dinner party with the Dalai Lama, Barack Obama and Princess Di, it attempts to answer the question: “is it possible to change the world just by being kind?”
You might laugh. You may cry. You could win one million pounds (really). 366 Days Of Kindness was created with support from Birmingham Rep and Jacksons Lane. With special thanks to Billy Bragg, Radio 4, Time Out and The Basement all of whom helped to make this show possible.
Ben’s portrayal of Michael Jackson in his prime is both a vocally and visually accurate tribute to the King of Pop. Ben is joined on the stage by musicians and dancers to perform a host of hit songs.
Jackson Live in Concert features all-live vocals and music, fabulous costumes and of course all the signature dance moves, moves associated so fondly with the undisputed King of Pop. THIS IS IT!
He’s got the look, the moonwalk and the voice. His renditions of Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean are truly sensational.

Friday 6th & Saturday 7th February – 7.30pm Jasmin Vardimon Company
Park “Extraordinary… a sexy and beautiful dance piece” New Statesman Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Jasmin Vardimon returns with her critically-acclaimed dance theatre production, Park. Park is an urban oasis, a place of refuge from ordinary life where eight characters play, fight, fall in love and learn to survive. In this playground of relationships, young lovers wrestle in a historic fountain, a graffiti artist sprays his story, a busker finds his only appreciative audience in a bag lady and a flag-waving bully rants worn out political beliefs. Their stories intertwine creating a modern day fairytale that is alternately sharp, funny and cruel. Reworked for 2015 with new 3D imaging and multitalented cast, Park presents a breathtaking collision of highly acute physical theatre, text, athletic dance and funky music, delivering fresh statements about our time. “Vividly physical and quirky performances.” The Times Running Time: 2 hours ( inc interval ) Ages: Contains partial female nudity and themes of an adult nature Tickets: £15, Concs £13, Friends £10, Schools £7.50

We are back! With a Rendezvous dance night, featuring Mick Tee who is celebrating 50 years as a DJ, you can be sure you are going to hear the good old classics from yesteryear and a bit more. The Rendezvous Club started at Dreamland in 1958 on Sunday evenings and continued until 1974 when the Dreamland Ballroom was closed. In 1987 Mick resurrected the Rendezvous in the Winter Gardens with amazing success featuring local DJs, local bands and 60s and 70s groups. It’s a classic well-loved tale that’s as fresh and relevant as the day it was written. One of the best-respected directors in the business. Genuinely breath-taking stage craft. Thrilling music by the very talented Marc Shaiman, with lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, the Grammy-winning writers behind Hairspray and Smash. What a combination! We’re taking the hassle of getting you there and bringing you back with some of the best seats on offer! Tickets: £58, Friends £53
Versatile singer/organist, John Shuttleworth, wants to share fond memories of his favourite past weekends. However, a typo on the poster (“weekend” has become “wee Ken”) means John is obliged to spend the evening paying homage to his next-door neighbour and sole agent – the diminutive Ken Worthington. With any luck, John will end up doing both. In this brand new show, Shuttleworth will perform classic tunes such as Two Margarines, Disaffected Youth and I Cant Go Back To Savoury Now as well as newer ditties like Whatever Happened to Vince Hill?, Midweek and Relatives In Rotherham.

Nursing Lives
Miles Jupp: Is The Chap You’re Thinking Of - DVD Recording In this show Miles will be discussing/ ranting/ describing: himself, you, domestic imprisonment, fatherhood, having to have opinions, hot drinks, the bloody government, bad balance, housing, ill health, the ageing process, navigation, other people’s pants and, inevitably, a number of other things. Pretty spicy stuff, I’m sure you’ll agree. Bits of it will be quite mild-mannered, and some of it will probably be a tad on the stroppy side.
Nursing Lives is a love story set in the early 1980s of Thatcher’s Britain, and takes us back to the hard-working, heart-breaking, swing-dancing world of the UK’s wartime hospitals. Like all Vamos Theatre shows, Nursing Lives is wordless, telling its story through physical communication, a strong visual design and an original soundtrack.
A heart-warming wartime tale of bravery and love from the UK’s leading full mask theatre company The story… When Flo, a feisty seventysomething, learns that the hospital she trained at during the Second World War is being demolished, she decides to take one last look – and stop the bulldozers in their tracks.. Her illicit visit becomes a personal celebration of friendship, courage, adventure and romance. But is what Flo remembers really the truth, or is history ready to be re-written?
“Vamos is rapidly establishing itself as one of the most innovative, exciting full-mask mime companies currently touring.” The Stage
Miles is a regular panellist on BBC Radio 4’s The News Quiz, Have I Got News For You and Mock The Week and he plays Nigel in Rev and John Duggan in The Thick Of It on BBC2. His BBC Radio 4 sitcom In And Out Of The Kitchen was nominated for a Writers’ Guild Award.
Nursing Lives is supported by Arts Council England, Sanctuary Care and Worcestershire County Council. Running Time: 1 hour 30min (+ interval + post show discussion) Ages: 12+ Tickets: £14, Concs £12, Friends £10, Schools £8

Steeleye Span In Concert
My Dog’s Got No Nose
Rich Hall – 3:10 to Humour
Folk rock pioneers Steeleye Span are touring with a new live show. Maddy Prior – the voice of the band – leads a line-up featuring faces old and new. Having recently collaborated with Sir Terry Pratchett on a record based on his Wintersmith novel, their 2015 performances will see them perform new gems alongside classics that have made them one of the most successful British Folk Rock bands ever.
My Dog’s Got No Nose takes us on a journey through the events surrounding a stand-up comedian’s first ever performance. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, sometimes poignant and often laugh-out-loud hilarious, he shares his soul reminiscing about his early career as a furniture-salesman-turned-photographer, love, marriage and ambitions.
Rich Hall’s critically acclaimed grouchy, deadpan style has established him as a master of absurdist irony and the king of rapid-fire wit. The award-winning Montana native renowned for his expertly crafted tirades and quick fire banter with audiences and delightful musical sequences saddles up and hitches his wagon to tour the British Isles once again.
His debut is the fulfilment of a lifelong dream where stand-up comedy, unrequited love, animal lovers, facts of life, sibling rivalries and mercy killing are just some of the elements covered in this bittersweet story, as we discover that both the man and the performance are not quite what they seem.

Rene & Edith’s Comedy Dinner Show
Feral in Margate
A parody to Allo Allo!
‘Listen very carefully; I shall say this only once’ Allo Allo – Le Dinner Show is a hilarious site specific tribute to the very popular 80’s sitcom, performed as you dine whilst enjoying a delicious three-course meal. You will be transported back to the 1940’s as Rene’, his wife Edith and the loving waitress Yvette, perform this live comedy dinner theatre show, as if you were on set in the famous Café Rene’. Guests of honour attending the dinner will be Head of Gestapo, Herr Flick & the very camp German officer Lieutenant Gruber. The show promises an evening of side-splitting entertainment as well as a great meal Ages: 18+ Tickets: £35.00 (includes 3 course dinner)
Feral is an innovative piece of visual theatre that combines puppetry, film and live sound to create and destroy a world in front of its audience’s eyes. Joe looks back at the town of his childhood. Bright, vibrant and idyllic the world resembles a haven of comfort. But as Joe journeys on, walls and lives are peeled back and the story of a community’s fall unfolds around him. A cross art form piece, Feral seamlessly blends film and live performance. Puppeteers manipulate and bring to life a tiny world, whilst simultaneously creating a live animation, as they follow it’s every breath via digital camera. Fringe First Award winning Feral has been remoulded into a new version especially for the people of Margate.

Let us tell you a strange tale that did unfold someplace in the glum north o’the warld, where there lived a Man who could not stop eating, a Woman doomed to cook his meals and one ‘inveesible child’. Told in a rich and saucy Scots dialect with physical verve, a wee dram of whisky to oil the way and a musical score that rolls in like mist over the hills, The Red Chair sees acclaimed Scottish performer Sarah Cameron steer us through a landscape of twisted reason, extreme compulsion and eye watering complacency, where domestic drudgery happens on an operatic scale and a father’s dereliction of duty reaches epic proportions.
The Red Chair is based on Sarah’s original book that had its first public reading as part of The House of Fairytales at the Port Eliot Festival. It lies somewhere between a Grimm’s Tale, an absurdist ghost story and a parent’s guide on how not to bring up children. “The quality of the performance is astonishing and unforgettable.” The Scotsman on Under Glass Running Time: 2 hours (inc interval) Ages: 11+ Tickets: £12

Call out to community actors
Photo: Doug Currie
Those legends of Irish music & song, The Fureys & Davey Arthur, renowned for their hit songs ‘I will love you’, ‘Sweet 16’, ‘Green fields of France’ and ‘Red rose café’ are back by popular demand! The Fureys are responsible for some of the most stirring music ever to capture the public imagination. Their folk / middle of the road based music has received standing ovations in some of the biggest concert halls in the world. Their songs stir many emotions….tears and laughter, sadness and joy. A Fureys’ concert is always a night to remember. Running Time: 2 hours 30 mins (inc interval) Ages: All Tickets: £18.50, Concs £16.50
Brand new comedy from the makers of Withering Looks and Inspector Norse. Doreen Gray has it all, a drive time radio show, a high ratings lifestyle programme on Even More 4, but hitting 50, Doreen finds her face no longer fits the bill. At a school reunion she stumbles across a youthful self portrait and makes a dark and dreadful deal. Featuring community actors as Doreen’s school mates live on stage. “The Laurel and Hardy of literary deconstruction” The Guardian “The script is funny as hell and the two women sure know how to work an audience”. Northern Soul
Award-winning Lip Service are regular visitors to The Theatre Royal with their often bizarre, and always comic, interpretations of classics. Now they’re turning their attention to Doreen – rather than Dorian – Gray! They’re looking for willing members of the community to perform live on stage in this show. There will be 4 rehearsals a few days prior to the performances to rehearse 4 musical numbers as well as developing material, which will be filmed for inclusion in each of the performances. We are looking for a team of 20-30 people (mix of young and old, ages 17+). Rehearsals: There will be four 3 hour rehearsal sessions on Sunday 19th and Sunday 26th April, working with choir leader and choreographer Leann Young plus Maggie Fox & Sue Ryding. About LipService: Maggie Fox & Sue Ryding have written 18 original comedies for the theatre winning many awards, most recently the Stage Door Foundation Award for Excellence. LipService aims to provide participants with a quality experience working with experienced theatre practitioners and being part of a professional production. How do I get involved? So It Goes is a true story about love and loss. Hannah has always wanted to talk about her dad. But in the seven years since he died, she hasn’t quite managed it. Not one to be defeated, she’s enlisted her friend David to help her on a journey through memory, laughter and sorrow. So It Goes explores the light and dark sides of grief, in a playful and deeply personal show.
My name is Tony. When I was a little boy I had the most extraordinary friend…Pablo Picasso! Come and play down on the farm with Tony and Picasso. We’ll have loads of fun, make crazy pictures and we’ll tell the story of how a young boy became friends with one of the greatest artists who ever lived. Oxford Playhouse and Untied Artists present The Boy Who Bit Picasso, an interactive theatre show for everyone aged four and over.
With storytelling, music and lots of chances to make your own art, this hands-on family show introduces one of the 20th century’s most influential artists through the eyes of a young boy. Now based in Ramsgate, led by Clive Holland and aided by a lot of innovative theatrical, musical and arty chums, the company are collaborating with Third Party on their production of The Sagas of Noggin the Nog. Theatre Royal Margate will be supporting the following Kent based companies to create and present work to audiences in Margate and beyond. Mischievous Theatre, Third Party and StevensonThompson have all been chosen because they make relevant, exciting and accessible work which we want to see more of, especially here in Margate. We’re proud to be able to showcase their work at the Theatre Royal, with the ambition of helping them reach a wider audience. Mischievous Theatre was conceived over thirty years ago but was born here at the Theatre Royal, Margate in 2010 with a scratch event that showed, for the first time, a work in progress version of “The Con-Man”. In 2012, Third Party adapted the children’s classic The Sagas of Noggin the Nog for the stage, directed by John Wright. Following previews here at the Theatre Royal, the show went to the Edinburgh Festival in August 2014 to rave reviews, including 4 stars from the

Martin Gibbons, a professional actor, writer and director (who runs and leads the Theatre Royal Youth Theatre) says “As a practitioner I am interested in using theatre spaces as dream spaces. I don’t buy the realism and push for naturalism in theatre; the stage should go beyond the day to day, creating worlds that can only exist in the imagination. This totally influences my work”.
